The pectin/functionalized silica coated filter paper (FILPSL2) was used for copper ion adsorption. Silica sol (1), prepared by mixing ethanol, water, TEOS and hydrochloric acid, was slowly added into pectin solution. A piece of filter paper (2 cm x 2 cm) was immersed in the silica-pectin solution for 1 hr. The coated filter paper was dried at room temperature and then oven-dried at 50 °C for 6 hrs to obtain FILPS. The silica sol (2) was subsequently prepared by mixing ethanol, water, N-[3-(Trimethoxysilyl) propyl] ethylenediamine (L2) and hydrochloric acid. The FILPS was immersed in silica sol (2) and the coated paper was oven-dried at 50 °C for 6 hrs to obtain FILPSL2. The SEM micrograph of uncoated Filter paper (FIL) and FILPSL2 showsa characteristic woven pattern. For copper ion adsorption, FILPSL2 was put into 0.1 M of CuCl2solution (pH 2, 25 °C). The color of the paper changes from off-white to intense blue within 5 min due to the complex between amino group of functionalized silica and Cu2+ as evidenced from IR spectroscopy.The equilibrium adsorption percentage and adsorption capacity were 27.10 and 5.5 x 10-3 respectively. The concentrations of copper ion solutions were varied to 10-2and 10-3M at this pH. The lower concentration of copper ion results in the higher adsorption percentage. While the lower concentration of copper ion results in the lower adsorption capacity. The adsorption was also experimented at pH 3.The similar trend was obtained. The optimum pH for adsorption for all concentrations was 2. The effect of interferences on the copper ion adsorption depends on the pH. At pH 2, Ni2+ has a stronger effect. While Cd2+ has a stronger effect at pH 3. The desorption was performed using 0.2 M CH3COOH solution. The complete desorption occurred within 30 min.

Both water repellency and water vapour barrier properties were endowed at paper surface by coating with beeswax-chitosan latex. It was found that the water vapour transmission rate of coated paper decreased as the drying temperature increased. However, water contact angle was not affected with it. Although the surface morphology deformed at high drying temperature, the roughness values maintained at micro-scale. Further analysis indicated that the water vapour barrier property of coated paper was influenced by the density of the coating layer.

The objective of this experiment was to investigate the relationship between drying and ink absorption using laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink penetration and distribution by LSCM. Three-dimensional images of ink penetration were obtained by reconstructing all XY plane images. Reconstructed images were used to describe ink absorption in coated paper by LSCM. The results implied that it was reliable and effective using LSCM to characterize the ink penetration depth and distribution uniformity. This method could not damage the specimen and did not need fluorescent dye to stain the specimen, which decreased the errors by hand operation. The results indicated that drying temperature affected ink penetration depth and distribution evenness. Higher and lower drying temperature could not contribute to ink absorption uniformity. With the drying temperature increasing, ink penetration depth in coated paper increased.

Ink penetration and distribution affect the final appearance of printing and usage of ink, which are closely concerned by printer and paper maker. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the relationship between drying and back trap mottle. The different drying temperature was carried out to change the coating structure and properties. Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink distribution by LSCM. The results indicated that drying temperature affected ink distribution evenness. Higher and lower drying temperature could not contribute to ink absorption uniformity. Appropriate drying temperature could contribute to form the best printability of coated paper. Backtrap mottle was tightly linked with ink penetration evenness and uniform ink absorption leaded to little back trap mottle.

The structure of the coating layer has a strong influence on the optical and physical properties of paper as well as on the print quality. Ink is transferred and sets onto the paper surface in the printing process, which affect printing quality and usage of ink. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the influence of calender on coating surface structure and Printability. The surface structure was explored in the method of numerical and visual analysis using mercury porosimetry measurement and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The findings indicated that the calender treatment affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. It could be concluded that Calender could increase the smoothness, gloss and paper surface efficiency of coated paper, which resulted in lower amount of ink usage, lower amount of ink absorption and higher print density.

To observe binder distribution, and obtain the relationship between drying method and binder distribution in the z-direction, Rhodamine B was used to stain the binder and as the probe to characterize z-directional distribution of the binder using LSCM. The results implied that it was reliable and effective method using LSCM to characterize the z-directional distribution of binder and analyze the influence of dry method on binder migration. It could be concluded that the dry method was critical to binder distribution in coated paper and vacuum drying accelerated binder migration to the base paper, however vacuum drying made uniform binder distribution. Infrared drying was good to producing little binder migration towards the interior of base paper, but infrared drying was disadvantageous to even binder distribution.

The aim of this study was to obtain the effect of drying methods on surface properties and ink penetration. Laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM) was used in order to characterize the penetration depth through quantitative analysis. Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink penetration and distribution by LSCM. The results showed that the drying methods had an important role on the surface properties and ink penetration of coated paper. Infrared drying compared with vacuum drying and hot air drying was good to improve the paper properties, which resulted in low roughness, high gloss, low ink absorption and high paper surface efficiency. It could be concluded that infrared drying compared with vacuum drying and hot air drying resulted in the highest print density and better printability.

The surface topography and properties of coating layer have an important influence on penetration and distribution of the print ink. In this research, the main objective was to investigate the effect of binder migration on the coating surface microstructure. The surface microstructure was explored in the method of numerical and visual analysis using mercury porosimetry measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The findings indicated that the binder migration on the coating surface affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. The little binder migration in the consolidation phase of coating color made a contribution to the forming of the coating layer, which made the coating surface more smother to printing performance.

It could be concluded Common offset printing ink compared with UV offset printing resulted in deeper ink penetration ,uneven ink distribution and lower print density. Because the composition and drying method of UV offset printing ink and common offset printing ink were significant different, penetration depth and distribution uniformity of these two types of offset printing ink in coated paper were distinct.

The physical structure of coating layer have an important influence on transferring and setting of the printing ink. In this study, the effect of pigment on surface microstructure and surface free energy was investigated. The findings indicated that the pigment affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. Kaolin pigment compared with calcium carbonate pigment was good to improve the paper surface smoothness. Surface free energy of kaolin pigment coating was higher than calcium carbonate pigment coating, which showed that surface wettability of coating with kaolin pigment was better than calcium carbonate pigment.

The cross-linked/non-crosslinked styrene-acrylate micro emulsion with high solid content were synthesized using styrene (St), butyl acrylate (BA), acrylic acid (AA), methyl acrylate (MMA), N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide (NMA) as the raw materials by seeded polymerization, and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and transmission electron microscope (TEM); The coating for the coated paper was prepared by the two kinds of styrene-acrylate micro emulsion, whose effect on the viscosity and water retention of the coating was discussed. The results show that the particles of two kinds of styrene-acrylate micro emulsion are regular sphericity in shape; The apparent viscosity of the coating decreases with the increase of the shear rate, indicating a pseudo-plastic flow characteristic. There is no obvious difference on the viscosity between the two coating under the condition of high shear rate. Compared with the coating prepared by non-crosslinked styrene-acrylate micro emulsion, the coating prepared by cross-linked styrene-acrylate micro emulsion has a bigger viscosity and a better property of water retention.

To high absorbency base paper, the opposite is true.

In low dying temperature the SB-latex was prone to migrated to coating layer surface than starch, the opposite is true in high dying temperature.

The coating binder migration and concentration in z-direction of coating layer especially in coating surface influence the coated paper printing properties. The results indicated that with the increase of coating surface binder migration, the coated paper opacity decreases, and the K&N value decreases. The relationship of K&N value and binder concentration in surface of coating layer was linear, which indicated that compared to binder dosage concentration in coating color, the K&N value and coating surface binder concentration has higher correlation. The more uniform the binder distribution in cross section of coating layer, the greater the IGT.

The penetration of ink into the paper affects the final appearance of printing and the amount of ink usage. The main aim of this experiment was to investigate the efficiency of coating speed on surface properties and ink penetration and to characterize the penetration depth through quantitative analysis by laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). The results indicated that the surface properties of coated paper could be adjusted and improved by increasing the coating speed. With the increasing of coating speed, ink penetration depth declined and ink penetration uniformity increased. It could be concluded that the coated paper with high coating speed compared with low coating speed resulted in lower ink usage and better printability on the condition of same print density.

The paper discusses and probes into the process and technology of paper wooden compound pallets.

What happens in the paper surface about ink absorption is of great important for appearance of final printing. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the influence of printing pressure and printing speed on ink layer thickness transferred onto coated paper through quantitative analysis by laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). Meanwhile, the influence of printing pressure and printing speed on print density and print gloss were obtained. The results implied that higher printing pressure resulted in higher ink layer thickness, print density and print gloss when printing pressure is less than 700N, but higher printing speed resulted in lower ink layer thickness, print density and print gloss when printing pressure is constant. It could be concluded that the coated paper with high printing speed compared with low printing speed resulted in lower ink absorption, lower print density, lower print gloss and worse printability on the condition of same printing pressure.

A novel hollow microsphere plastic pigment was prepared by the soap-free seeded emulsion polymerization. This pigment, with polyacrylate as core and with polystyrene as shell (PA/PSt) had hollow structure after dryness. The latex was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), and particle size analysis. The synthetic pigment was applied in the paper coating, and its influence on the printablility of the coated paper was investigated. The results show that the overall properties of the coated paper can be effectively improved when the clay in the base formulation is replaced by a small amount of hollow microsphere plastic pigment.

The ink penetration behavior depends on the coating surface structure and surface properties of the coating layer in the papermaking process, which include coating recipes and coating conditions, etc. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the relationship between binder content and ink absorption using laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM). Fluorescent ink was used to observe and characterize ink penetration and distribution in coated paper by LSCM. The results indicated that higher binder content could result in higher amount ink absorption. With the increasing of binder content, ink penetration depth in coated paper increased. Sample G2 with 20 parts binder produced the most unevenness ink distribution. It could be concluded that the coated paper with 25 parts binder compared with the other samples resulted in higher ink usage and better printing quality.

The intention of this paper is to review of some recent innovative novelties about paper and board pigment coating raw materials. First an overview is given of “traditional” coating raw materials and the coating process. Then new starch based pigments and binders as well as novel plastic pigments are reviewed regarding their effect on coated paper properties. Finally it is concluded that further innovations and research are needed.

For high print quality, halftone dots should have minimal dot gain and sharp, circular edges, the receiving surface must have a line, high-porosity structure and be hydrophilic. Paper surface chemistry requirements for good inkjet print quality are so unconventional that new paper grades for printing should be specially designed. In this paper, the printability, coating structure and the color reproduction after printing of coated paper was studied.

In is paper precipitated silica is used in coated paper coating. It shows that the effect of different silica on properties of pigment dispersion is different. The dosage of silica influences the properties of pigment dispersion too. The viscosity of coating is higher than the corresponding pigment dispersion. The higher the viscosity of pigment dispersion is, the higher the corresponding viscosity of coating is. The more the dosage of silica is and the littler the particle size of silica is, the larger water retention value of coating is. When the precipitated silica is used in coated paper coating, the viscosity of coating is increasing. If precipitated silica coat paper, the whiteness of coated paper increases by 1%-2%

In this paper, the effect of the charge of hydrophilic and lipophilic nanosized TiO2 on the optical properties and printability of coated paper was investigated. The parameters including brightness, opacity, surface strength and sizing degree were used to evaluate the optical properties and printability of coated paper. The effects of hydrophilic and lipophilic TiO2 on the properties of coated paper were discussed. It was shown that the optical properties and printability of coated paper increase persistently with the change of nanosized TiO2 charged from 5% to 15%. Once the charge of nanosized TiO2 was over 15%, the main properties of coated paper took on a downward tendency. The properties of coated paper were related to the surface properties of nanosized TiO2 samples. It was found that the lipophilicity of nanosized TiO2 sample played a more important role in the improvement of the coated paper properties, which was believed to be based on the fact that lipophilic nanosized TiO2 could be well compatible with the binders used in the paper coating.

Preservative was very necessary used in coated paper coating. Preservative was typical paper additive which was low dosage and high yield. Preservative classification, function mechanism and application technology of coated paper coating was introduced and summarized by the numbers in this paper. Finally the development direction and prospect of preservative used in coated paper coating was prospected.

This article is to study, under the same conditions, the color reproduction which were used coated paper, matte paper and special paper separately, with Bangte ink or Daiichi ink, printed by Mitsubishi printing machine. Then the Lab values of the three sheets of blank paper and the four-color color were measured by spectrophotometric densitometer,and analysed by Excel, meanwhile, drawing the colors maps and the chromatic aberration maps. Base on the data and maps, illustrate the three types of paper and two kinds of ink coloration and chromatic aberration, and come to conclusion to control the stability of ink and paper, improve the standardization and accuracy, decrease the error.

The performances of three kinds of water-based pigment inks were compared and studied, which include self-made ink, original printing ink and compatible ink. Art paper, matte paper and white card paper were used as the substrates. Testing the contact angle of ink droplets, the spreading, wetting, and drying rate of inks were investigated. The color density and CIE L*a*b* values of the printed samples were measured, to evaluate the hue error and color gamut. The water resistance was studied with corresponding experiments. The result indicates: self-made water-based pigment ink has the smallest contact angle on coated paper, showing a faster drying rate. Its color gamut is similar to the original printing ink on art paper, and the hue error is low. Through the water resistance test, the color density measured on art paper and matte paper had no changes, without color dissolving and color fading, showing good water resistance applicability.

Having been coated, the surface unevenness and pores on paper were covered by a coating layer composed of fine particles and binders, which can absorb ink well, thereby a good uniformity and smoothness of paper could be obtained, consequently, the reproducing capability for printing dot and good whiteness, gloss and opacity can be improved. In theory, the ink rub resistance for coated paper print is mainly affected by the ink absorbance property of paper, printing conditions, ink components, rub medium and so on. In this study, seven different kinds of coated papers, the viscosities of the inks were adjusted with a viscosity adjusting agent, and then the prints were prepared by proofing with the ink with different viscosities. After drying, the prints were used for rub testing. The impact of the basic properties of coated paper and the content of reducer in inks on rub resistance were discussed on the basis of a comparative analysis of the experimental data. Printing color density loss rate and print color difference were exploited in this paper to characterize the ink rub resistance for coated paper prints. In this study, it was found that ink rub resistance was mainly influenced by ink absorbency and smoothness of the paper. Under the similar conditions, the color density of coated paper print decreases with the rub strength increasing, color difference increased gradually, but not linearly. With the increase of ink viscosity reducer content, printing density loss rates as well as color difference changed, but not be linearly.

Different degrees of high degree of substitution cationic starch (HCS) were prepared and applied in paper coating. Effects of HCS on coating properties and coated paper properties were investigated, and the comparison of effects of HCS and PDMDAAC was made. The results show that the best amount of HCS in coating formula is between 2% and 4%. When the amount of HCS is 4%, whiteness of coated paper was the highest. The color density was the highest when the amount of HCS is about 4% and the degree of substitution is 0.64. HCS with degree of substitution 0.849 is better than PDMDAAC in some respects, and the print image density achieved satisfactorily.

In recent years, conductive paper produced by in-situ chemical polymerization of pyrrole and aniline in aqueous electrolytes has aroused a great interest. The in-situ chemical polymerization process is a process in which a monomer such as aniline or pyrrole is polymerized in the presence of pulp fibers. This approach can not only impart to paper specific functions, but also provide a new possibility for the processing and utilization of conductive polymers. In this paper, the research progress on inherently conducting polymer coated paper was overviewed.

Eco-friendly high-yield pulps (HYP) are becoming increasingly used to product high value-added fine paper that is traditionally produced exclusively with chemical pulps. However, due to the presence of a large quantity of photosensitive lignin in the HYP pulp to more effectively utilize woods resources, there is a concern on the long term brightness stability of HYP containing paper. In this research, various TiO2was added to coating colors to improve the light fastness properties of HYP containing coated paper. The effect on the stability of optical properties of coated paper including brightness, opacity, color difference and the degree of brightness reversion before and after accelerated aging were studied. It was shown that the brightness stability of the HYP containing coated paper increased with increased addition of TiO2. Rutile TiO2was especially more effective than other types of TiO2on yellowing inhibition of coated paper. At a dosage of 3 parts of rutile TiO2, the brightness stability of coated paper containing 20% of HYP was found to be even better than paper made of 100% chemical pulp coated with conventional coating color.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of drying condition on the binder distribution and characterize the binder migration in the method of numerical and visual analysis by Scanning Electrical Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope (LSCM). In this study, Rhodamine B was used to stain the binder and as the probe to characterize z-directional distribution of the binder using LSCM. The results implied that it was reliable and effective method using LSCM to characterize the z- directional distribution of binder and analyze the influence of dry condition on binder migration. It could be concluded that the dry temperature played an important effect on binder distribution in coated paper and high dry temperature accelerated binder migration to the coating surface, however low drying temperature made binder migrate towards the interior of base paper. Moderate drying is good to binder distribution and coating layer forming.

Traditional cast coated glossy photo paper production process due to its characteristics that the water evaporates from non-coated cast side, so the coating speed is slow, ground paper is non-waterproof paper, therefore the paper products are easy to transmutative, as the cast shows that the formation of dense coatings membrane, the lower ink absorption. To solve such the problems, a novel porous ink receiving layer constituted by a litter amount of a hydrophilic binder(PVA) and a cross-linking agent, a large amount of inorganic pigment(SiO2) and a hollow structural plastic pigment. In this paper, the effects of the hollow structural plastic pigment rheological properties of the color and the printing and preservation properties of ink jet paper were investigated. Because of the thermoplasticity of the plastic pigment the calendering and dry technology were also studied. From the viewpoint of water-fastness and preventing the penetration of binder, the resin coated paper(being so-called RC paper) is selected as the substrate.

Coating pore structure of low gloss coated paper based on different pigment blends was analyzed using mercury intrusion method in this paper. The results show that pore size of coating layer structure of low gloss coated paper ranges from 20nm-500nm, and the range from 500nm-5000nm is mainly from base paper and interactions between coating color and base paper. Printability of coated paper can be well related with coating pore structure. Print gloss is strongly influenced by pore size and pore volume. Large pore diameters and small pore volume of coating layer structure can improve print gloss. Ink density increases with the increasing of pore diameter while the pore volume is kept constant. The increasing of pore volume of coat layer structure will improve capillary absorption and then improve ink absorption. The control of coating pore structure is very important for producing low gloss coated paper.

In this paper, Water glass and sulfuric acid were used as raw materials to do the synthesis of hydrated silica by the method of precipitation, and then hydrated silica is applied in paper coating. By examining the changes of the coated paper’s various properties to study the effects of different reaction conditions to the final products. And then we obtained a optimal synthesis conditions: sulfuric acid concentration 25%, reaction time 50min, reaction temperature 80°C, sodium silicate modulus 2.8, stirring speed 150r/min, the relative amount of sodium sulfate content compared to SiO2 is 25% .And at last the outward appearance of the hydrated silica and the structural changes in paper coating were observed by scanning electron microscopy.

The findings indicated that the coating drying temperature affected the pore size, depth and distribution of the coated paper surface. Moderate temperature was benefit to pigment particles and binder arranging orderly, which made the coating surface had high smoothness, gloss, paper surface efficiency, and modest ink absorption.

In order to research the feasibility of staining method in measuring the acoustic field intensity, we study the mechanism that dye spots could appear on coated paper in methylene blue solution under ultrasonic condition. The dyeing mechanism was analyzed and pointed out the dye pits evolution process on the basis of the structure of coated paper，and then the experiment was carried out to test the validation. The result indicates that the theory is rational. And we can also draw the conclusion that staining method have many barriers in pullulating to a utility technology to evaluate the acoustic field quantitatively, but it is simple and easy operating in special acoustic field which requires less accuracy.

Fluorescent whitening agent is relatively small dosage in the coating, but it has great influence on the properties of the coating and ink-jet printing qualities. With the increase of fluorescent whitening agent dosage, the PH of the coating rose but the viscosity was hardly to change. The brightness of coated ink-jet printing paper and color density of the printing image firstly presented the trend of increasing then decreasing. What’s more, when the brightness of the coated paper achieved to the maximum, color density and contact angle properties were the largest. Chromatic aberration property of the image reduced from 1.87 to 1.75, when the addition of fluorescent whitening agent rose from 0.1% to 0.5%. While the dosage was rose to 0.9%, chromatic aberration increased to 2.15. The gloss of coated paper decreased with the dosage of fluorescent whitening agent increasing. In sum, fluorescent whitening agent can enhance the brightness of the coated paper as well as the printing properties. The results show that the best brightness and printing qualities of coated ink-jet printing paper are obtained, when the fluorescent whitening agent is 0.5%( relative to pigment).

Two silane-based hybrid coatings were developed to modify the surface energy of phenolic resin impregnated paper. The coated paper samples were further pressed onto surfaces of plywood. The surface properties and water repellence of coated paper were investigated by AFM, XPS and water contact angle measurements. The water absorption of plywood with pressed paper was studied by water uptake tests. It was found that the sol-gel coatings had slightly improved the water repellence of the impregnated paper. The water absorption of plywood was also slightly decreased.

In order to evaluate the practical application effect of the self-made water-based coated paper inkjet ink and to study the influence factors, their printing performance and the influence of the printed material for printing performance is studied. The drying time of coated paper ink and ordinary water-based inkjet ink are measured and compared. Drying process of ink droplet is recorded by video contact angle tester. It is found that the drying rate of the coated paper ink is higher than the ordinary ink and the diffusion of the ordinary ink is severe. The coated paper ink and ordinary ink are printed, and it is found that the former can get better image detail and color reproduction for the picture of human’s face and inanimate object. The coated paper ink can also obtain a better reproduction of tone levels. Coated paper inkjet ink is printed on different coated papers, and the color densities are measured through red, green and blue color filter. The color strength and hue error are obtained to evaluate the color characteristics on different papers. It is concluded that the coated paper inkjet ink can obtain better color on the Henglian gloss coated paper, Sunbrite gloss coated paper and SPCO matt coated paper.
