RESUMO O milho é a principal fonte de energia nas dietas animais. Em algumas regiões brasileiras, sua disponibilidade, principalmente na entressafra, é insuficiente para atender à demanda, fazendo com que seu preço se eleve. Neste estudo, objetivou-se avaliar a substituição do milho pelo sorgo sobre o desempenho zootécnico e a digestibilidade em coelhos. Foram utilizados 60 animais machos da raça Nova Zelândia Branco, divididos em três tratamentos: ração base milho (TM); ração base sorgo (TS) e ração base 50% de milho + 50% de sorgo (TMS). No ensaio de desempenho, avaliou-se ganho de peso (GP), consumo de ração (CR), conversão alimentar (CA), coeficientes de digestibilidade da matéria seca (CDMS), proteína bruta (CDPB), fibra em detergente neutro (CDFDN) e fibra em detergente ácido (CDFDA). Observou-se que o CRM, a CA e o GPM não foram afetados pela substituição do milho pelo sorgo, nos níveis de 50% e 100%. Os resultados de digestibilidade demonstraram maiores CDPB e CDFDN na ração base milho, não havendo diferenças entre os demais parâmetros estudados. O sorgo com baixo teor de tanino pode ser usado nas rações de crescimento de coelhos em níveis de substituição de 50% ou 100% da participação do milho, sem prejuízos para o desempenho zootécnico e a digestibilidade.

The objectives of this study were to compare surgical techniques and the effects of using n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate and bovine amniotic membrane to repair perforated lesions in corneas. Penetrating keratoplasty was performed in sixty New Zealand White rabbits under general anesthesia. Group 1 (G1) was treated with n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate, group 2 (G2) received a fragment of amniotic membrane through the anterior chamber and application of n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate over the lesion, group 3 (G3) was treated with the same technique as G2 with the addition of an amniotic membrane bandage covering the cornea and sutured in the limbus region, and group 4 (G4) was treated with an amniotic membrane sutured to the lesion and an amniotic membrane bandage sutured in the limbus region. Clinical, histological and histomorphometric examinations of the corneas were performed. The membrane acted as a barrier for aqueous humor in G2 and G3, thereby keeping the surface dry for adhesive application; it also prevented the adhesive from contacting intraocular structures. The groups treated with amniotic membrane and surgical adhesive showed better results than the groups treated with either material alone. Thus, the combination of the membrane with the adhesive is recommended for this type of lesion.

The objective of this work was to monitor the consolidation of the femur after osteosynthesis with a bridge plate associated with the intramedullary pin using scintigraphy. We used seven New Zealand breed male rabbits, at 4 months of age, with a mean weight of 3.5 kg. We performed a three-phase bone scintigraphy with technetium-labeled methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP) before and after surgery, and 20, 50 and 90 days postoperatively. The activity index (AI) was calculated by dividing the average number of uptake counts in the region of the osteotomy by the average number of counts in the corresponding region in the contralateral limb. Radiography was performed before surgery, after surgery, and 15, 30, 45, 60 and 90 days postoperatively. We found a direct relationship between the activity index and progress of bone scintigraphy in the evaluation sequence over the period of observation. Scintigraphy allows monitoring of bone metabolism and measurement of vascularization and/or bone or tissue perfusion. The images obtained in the blood pool and static phases are the most appropriate for assessing bone metabolism in the context of this study. The bridge plate associated with the intramedullary pin promotes osteosynthesis with sufficient stability to allow bone consolidation.

Avaliaram-se os efeitos da ventilação mandatória intermitente sincronizada (SIMV) e da ventilação com pressão de suporte e volume garantido (VAPSV) sobre os parâmetros cardiorrespiratórios em coelhos anestesiados com propofol e submetidos à hipovolemia aguda. Vinte animais da raça Nova Zelândia foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em dois grupos: GM sob SIMV e GV sob VAPSV. Na medicação pré-anestésica, foram administradas quetamina (15mg/kg) e xilazina (1mg/kg) intramuscular. O propofol foi administrado na indução (8mg/kg) e na manutenção anestésica (0,5mg/kg/min). Em seguida, em cada grupo foi iniciada a modalidade ventilatória. Após 30 minutos da indução, os coelhos foram submetidos à hipovolemia, retirando-se 12mL/kg de sangue arterial. A primeira mensuração das características (M0) foi efetuada 40 minutos após a indução anestésica, seguida de mensurações em intervalos de 10 minutos depois da hipovolemia (M1 a M6). A partir de M3, o débito cardíaco foi maior em GM. Em ambos os grupos, as pressões arteriais e pressão venosa central diminuíram a partir de M1, enquanto a pressão arterial de oxigênio no sangue arterial aumentou a partir de M4. O esforço respiratório foi maior no GV em todos os momentos estudados. Conclui-se que a SIMV e a VAPSV foram seguras quanto à oxigenação arterial, garantindo uma adequada troca gasosa. Contudo, a SIMV mostrou-se a mais indicada em coelhos hipovolêmicos por manter melhor a estabilidade hemodinâmica, com a vantagem de proporcionar menor trabalho respiratório.

The present study was designed to determine whether DMSO causes an inhibition on the development of fever in rabbits. The intravenous administration of LPS (1.5µg.kg-1 body weight) caused fever in both saline+LPS and DMSO+LPS group, but the onset and magnitude of the induced fever were significantly different. The saline+LPS group presented a prototypic biphasic fever whereas the DMSO+LPS group presented an attenuated febrile response, but it was not abolished. These results suggest that DMSO may provide a protective mechanism against pyrogen LPS, probably through the modulation of NF-kB mediated events, such as fever.Estudaram-se os efeitos do DMSO na resposta febril induzida pela administração intravenosa de LPS em coelhos. A administração intravenosa de LPS (1,5µg.kg-1 peso vivo) causou febre mesmo na presença do DMSO. No entanto, o início e a magnitude da febre induzida foram significativamente menores no grupo tratado com DMSO enquanto o LPS isolado induziu resposta febril bifásica. Estes resultados sugerem que o DMSO pode exercer um mecanismo protetor contra a ação pirogênica do LPS, provavelmente por meio da modulação dos eventos mediados pelo NF-kB, entre eles, a febre.

Rabbits were infected per os with 10 Eustrongylides ignotus L4 and with 50 Contracaecum multipapillatum L3 per rabbit, recovered from naturally infected freshwater fishes (Hoplias malabaricus) in order to evaluate the patogenicity of these two nematode species in mammalian host. Two rabbits (20%) infected with E. ignotus died before the fourth day post-inoculation (one after 51 and the other after 78 hours). Six rabbits (60%) were inappetent until the fifth day following experimental inoculation. No clinical signs in rabbits inoculated with C. multipapillatum were observed; nevertheless, eight (80%) animals were positive for this nematode species. Rabbits inoculated with E. ignotus, had gastric congestion with hematoma of the gastric wall in 60% of the cases. Peritoneum was congested in 20% of the animals with the presence of peritoneal abscess in 10% of the cases. All inoculated animals showed hyperemia of the gastric mucosa with hemorrhagic gastritis due to infections with E. ignotus. In C. multipapillatum inoculated animals, the hyperemia was followed by disruption of the epithelial mucosa in the sites of parasite attachment. In the gastric mucosa, miscellaneous leukocitary infiltrates, with multifocal necrosis reaching the submucosa in the infections with C. multipapillatum were observed under bright field microscopy. Perforating lesions in several organs, mainly in the gastric wall, pancreas and liver, always in the presence of a mixed inflammatory process, intensely fibrous, with hemorrhage and necrosis were observed in animals infected with E. ignotus.Coelhos foram infectados experimentalmente per os com 10 larvas L4 de Eustrogylides ignotus (n= 10) e 50 L3 de Contracaecum multipapillatum (n= 50) coletados em traíras (Hoplias malabaricus) naturalmente parasitadas a fim de se avaliar a patogenicidade induzida por essas espécies de nematóides em mamíferos. Dois coelhos (20%) infectados com E. ignotus morreram antes do quarto dia pós-infecção (um após 51 horas e outro após 78 horas). Seis coelhos (60%) mostraram-se inapetentes até o quinto dia após a infecção experimental. Não foram observados sinais clínicos nos coelhos infectados com C. multipapillatum. À necropsia, oito (80%) mostraram-se positivos para essa espécie de nematóide. Os coelhos infectados com E. ignotus apresentaram congestão gástrica, com formação de hematoma na parede gástrica em 60% dos casos. O peritônio estava congestionado em 20% dos animais, e em 10% dos casos foi observada a presença de abscesso. Todos os animais infectados apresentaram hiperemia da mucosa gástrica com gastrite hemorrágica provocada pela infecção com E. ignotus. Nas infecções com C. multipapillatum, a hiperemia foi seguida por ruptura da mucosa nos locais de fixação do parasito, e na mucosa gástrica observou-se infiltrado leucocitário, com necrose multifocais alcançando a submucosa. Nas infecções com E. ignotus foram constatadas lesões perfurantes em diversos órgãos, principalmente na parede gástrica, pâncreas e fígado, sempre na presença de processo inflamatório misto, intensamente fibrótico, com hemorragia e necrose.

The article discusses a study which compares surgical techniques that use bovine amniotic membrane and surgical adhesive n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate for treating corneal perforations. It mentions that the study was performed on white adult female rabbits from New Zealand and included evaluation of eyes using slit lamp biomicroscopy. It informs that the study found, surgical techniques using both adhesive and amniotic membrane were found more efficient compared to techniques using either of the two.

The article presents a study which identified whether dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) causes an inhibition on fever development in rabbits. It aimed to evaluate the effects of DMSO on fever response when administered prior to induction of experimental lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced endotoxemia in rabbits. Endotoxemia is caused by the release of LPS into the veins which induced inflammation which can result to septic shock. It also found that DMSO protection against pyrogen happens in cytokines production and release as related to febrile response.
