Wildfires are becoming more frequent due to the global climate change. Large amounts of greenhouse gases emitted by wildfires can lead to increases in extreme climate events. Accurately estimating the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from wildfires is important for mitigation of climate change. In this paper, we develop a novel method to estimate wildfire CO2 emissions from the relationship between local CO2 emissions and XCO2 anomalies. Our method uses the WRF-Chem assimilation system from OCO-2 XCO2 retrievals which coupled with Data Assimilation Research Testbed (DART). To validate our results, we conducted three experiments evaluating the wildfire CO2 emissions over the conterminous United States. The four-month average wildfire emissions from July to October in 2015∼2018 were estimated at 4.408 Tg C, 1.784 Tg C, 1.514 Tg C and 2.873 Tg C, respectively. Compared to the average of established inventories CT2019B, FINNv1.5 and GFASv1.2 fire emissions, our estimates fall within one standard deviation, except for 2017 due to lacking of OCO-2 XCO2 retrievals. These results suggest that the regional carbon assimilation system, such as WRF-Chem/DART, using OCO-2 XCO2 retrievals has a great potential for accurately tracking regional wildfire emissions. Rice is a major staple food grain for more than half of the world's population, and China is the largest rice producer and consumer in the world. In a climate-warming context, the frequency, duration and intensity of heat waves tend to increase, and rice production will be exposed to higher heat damage risks. Understanding the negative impacts of climate change on the rice supply is a critical issue. In this study, a new perspective on agricultural weather index insurance is proposed to investigate the impact of extreme high-temperature events on rice production in South China in the context of climate change. Based on data from meteorological stations in Anhui Province in China from 1961 to 2018 and the projected data from five Global Climate Models under three representative concentration pathway (RCP) scenarios from 2021 to 2099, the spatial–temporal characteristics of heat stress and its influence on rice production were analyzed by employing a weather index insurance model. The interdecadal breakpoints in the trends of the heat stress weather insurance index (HSWI) and the payout from 1961 to 2018 in 1987 were both determined, which are consistent with the more significant global warming since the 1980s. The largest increase after 1987 was found in the southeastern part of the study area. The projected HSWI and the payout increased significantly from 2021 to 2099, and their growth was faster with higher radiative forcing levels. The HSWI values were on average 1.4 times, 3.3 times and 6.1 times higher and the payouts were on average 3.9 times, 9.8 times and 15.0 times higher than the reference values for the near future, mid-future and far future, respectively. The results suggest that a more severe influence of heat damage on rice production will probably happen in the future, and it is vital to develop relevant adaptation strategies for the effects of a warmer climate and heat stress on rice production. Australia experiences a variety of climate extremes that result in loss of life and economic and environmental damage. This paper provides a first evaluation of the performance of state-of-the-art Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models (GCMs) in simulating climate extremes over Australia. Here, we evaluate how well 37 individual CMIP6 GCMs simulate the spatiotemporal patterns of 12 climate extremes over Australia by comparing the GCMs against gridded observations (Australian Gridded Climate Dataset). This evaluation is crucial for informing, interpreting, and constructing multimodel ensemble future projections of climate extremes over Australia, climate-resilience planning, and GCM selection while conducting exercises like dynamical downscaling via GCMs. We find that temperature extremes (maximum-maximum temperature -TXx, number of summer days -SU, and number of days when maximum temperature is greater than 35 °C -Txge35) are reasonably well-simulated in comparison to precipitation extremes. However, GCMs tend to overestimate (underestimate) minimum (maximum) temperature extremes. GCMs also typically struggle to capture both extremely dry (consecutive dry days -CDD) and wet (99th percentile of precipitation -R99p) precipitation extremes, thus highlighting the underlying uncertainty of GCMs in capturing regional drought and flood conditions. Typically for both precipitation and temperature extremes, UKESM1-0-LL, FGOALS-g3, and GCMs from Met office Hadley Centre (HadGEM3-GC31-MM and HadGEM3-GC31-LL) and NOAA (GFDL-ESM4 and GFDL-CM4) consistently tend to show good performance. In recent years, the frequent occurrence of extreme climate disasters has seriously affected agriculture in Northeast China. Based on precipitation data derived from 83 geographical stations in the study area for 60 years (1960–2019), we chose the reliable statistical methods of the Mann–Kendall test, Sen's slope, and the Standardized Precipitation Index, and regarded drought and flood as a whole in this paper, to identify the temporal and spatial variation characteristics of precipitation and extreme climate events in Northeast China. The results show that an increasing trend of disasters was detected at the 95% confidence level (Z = 2.3). According to the timescale analysis, abrupt climate changes started in 2006. Temporal and spatial distribution of extreme climate disasters, mainly drought and flood disasters, showed a significant upward trend from 2006 to 2019. According to the spatial analysis, the precipitation in Northeast China decreased from south to north and fluctuated less from east to west. Moreover, stations with extreme climate trends (trend of climatic anomaly with confidence level > 90%) followed the same spatial pattern as those with a high frequency of extreme climate disasters (more than 17.87 times/decade). The severity and frequency of extreme climate have increasingly threatened Northeast China in the past decade. In particular, the Northeast Plain experienced the most severe and extreme climate events that seriously threatened the study area in 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2019. Climate change has a strong impact on inland water bodies such as lakes. This means that the increase in lake temperature recorded in recent decades-in Europe as well-can change the evaporation regime of the lakes. This, together with the variation of the water cycle, in particular precipitation, implies that the water mass balance of lakes may vary due to climate change. Water mass balance modeling is therefore of paramount importance to monitor lakes in the context of global warming. Although many studies have focused on such a modeling, there is no shared approach that can be used for any lake across the globe, irrespective of the size. This becomes even more problematic for shallow and small lakes, for which few studies exist. For this reason, in this paper the use of reanalysis data, in particular ERA5-Land provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), is proposed for the mass balance modeling. In fact, ERA5-Land has a global coverage and it is the only data source comprising a specific model for lakes, the Fresh-water Lake model (FLake). The chosen case study is the Trasimeno lake, a small and shallow lake located in Central Italy. The use of the reanalysis was preceded by data validation by considering both ground-based and satellite observations. The results show that there is a good agreement between the observed monthly variation of the lake level, Δ H , and the corresponding values of the water storage, δ , computed by means of the ERA5-Land data (Pearson coefficient larger than 70%). Discrepancies between observations and the ERA5-Land data happen in periods characterized in Europe by an extreme climate anomaly. It is important to consider extreme climate events, reduce disaster losses, and formulate effective disaster prevention and mitigation countermeasures. Based on the daily data from 36 meteorological stations of Xinjiang from 1960 to 2020, in order to analyze the temporal–spatial variations and influencing factors of extreme dry and wet events in Xinjiang, a number of methods were used including climate trend, the Mann–Kendall test, the Fourier power spectrum, the contribution rate, partial least squares and cross-wavelet analysis. Results indicate that the annual average frequency of extreme dry/wet events has a decreasing/increasing trend, at the rate of 0.26 times/decade and 0.19 times/decade, respectively; the variation trend in extreme dry and wet events of four seasons are consistent with the annual counterpart, at the rate of −0.04 times/decade and 0.02 times/decade (spring), −0.08 times/decade and 0.05 times/decade (summer), −0.05 times/decade and 0.06 times/decade (autumn), and −0.1 times/decade and 0.08 times/decade (winter). Fe fluctuation is greatest in winter and the smallest in spring, so the transition to warm and wet is obvious in winter and spring drought is easy to occur; the variation extent of extreme dry and wet events in northern Xinjiang exceeds the counterpart in southern Xinjiang; 1986 and 1987 witnessed abrupt variation in extreme dry and wet events in Xinjiang, with indication of distinct periodic oscillations of 2.44, 2.94, and 5.69 years and 2.94 and 5.69 years, respectively; the extreme dry (wet) events are determined by meteorological factors, comprising precipitation, relative humidity and temperature, and the circulation factors constituted by Western Pacific Subtropical High-Intensity Area (East Asian Trough Intensity, Westerly Circulation and Western Pacific Subtropical High Area) and El Niño events. The topography significantly influences local climate precipitation and the intensity of precipitation events, yet the specific differences in its elevational effects require further understanding. This study focuses on precipitation in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, utilizing hourly data and a topographic elevation precipitation increment model to assess the impact of topography on local climate precipitation and extreme heavy rainfall events. The results indicate that the daily precipitation attributed to topographic elevation in Zhengzhou in July was 0.21 mm, accounting for 4.9% of the total precipitation. In the extreme heavy rainfall event on 20 July 2021 ("7.20" event), the precipitation due to topographic elevation reaches 48.7 mm, constituting 15.8% of the total precipitation. Additionally, numerical simulations using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model for the 20–21 July 2021 rainfall event in Zhengzhou show that the WRF model effectively reproduces the spatiotemporal characteristics of the precipitation process. The simulated topographic elevation precipitation intensity is 49.8 mm/day, accounting for 16.6% of daily precipitation, closely resembling observational data. Sensitivity experiments further reveal that reducing the heights of the Taihang Mountains and Funiu Mountains weakens the low-level easterly winds around Zhengzhou. Consequently, as the center of the heavy rainfall shifts northward or westward, the intensity of topographic elevation-induced precipitation decreases to 7.3 mm/day and 12.9 mm/day. In weather forecasting and climate monitoring, daily maximum and minimum air temperatures (TMAX and TMIN) are fundamental for operational and research purposes, from early warning of extreme events to climate change studies. This study provides an integrated evaluation of TMAX and TMIN from two European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) products: ERA5 reanalysis (1980–2019) and operational weather forecasts (2017–2021). Both products are evaluated using in situ observations from the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN). While the analyses span globally, emphasis is given to four key regions: Europe, East and West United States, and Australia. Results reveal a general underestimation of TMAX and overestimation of TMIN in both operational forecasts and ERA5, highlighting the limitation of the ECMWF model in estimating the amplitude of the diurnal cycle of air temperature. ERA5′s accuracy has improved over the past decade, due to enhanced constrain of land–atmosphere analysis streaming from more and higher-quality satellite data. Furthermore, ERA5 outperforms one-day-ahead weather forecasts, indicating that non-real-time dependent studies should rely on ERA5 instead of real-time operational forecasts. This paper is concerned with the statistical learning of the extreme smog (PM 2.5 ) dynamics of a vast region in China. Differently from classical extreme value modeling approaches, this paper develops a dynamic model of conditional, exponentiated Weibull distribution modeling and analysis of regional smog extremes, particularly for the worst scenarios observed in each day. To gain higher modeling efficiency, weather factors will be introduced in an enhanced model. The proposed model and the enhanced model are illustrated with temporal/spatial maxima of hourly PM 2.5 observations each day from smog monitoring stations located in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei geographical region between 2014 and 2019. The proposed model performs more precisely on fittings compared with other previous models dealing with maxima with autoregressive parameter dynamics, and provides relatively accurate prediction as well. The findings enhance the understanding of how severe extreme smog scenarios can be and provide useful information for the central/local government to conduct coordinated PM 2.5 control and treatment. For completeness, probabilistic properties of the proposed model were investigated. Statistical estimation based on the conditional maximum likelihood principle is established. From 15 to 20 September 2016, precipitation extremes occurred in the middle and lower reaches of the Jinsha River, causing immense direct economic losses due to floods. The current research on extreme climate characteristics and the relationship between climate extremes and runoff extremes are based on a single data source. This is due to the uneven distribution of precipitation and temperature stations, which make it difficult to fully capture extreme climate events. In this paper, various internationally popular reanalysis datasets were introduced. Extreme climate indexes were computed using the merged datasets versus the meteorological station observations. The results showed that: (1) Comparative analysis of the extreme climate indexes of the reanalysis dataset and the data of traditional meteorological observation stations showed that most of the extreme precipitation indexes calculated by the various reanalysis of combined data exhibited good performances. Among the reanalyzed combined products, CMPA-H, CMADS, and GPM (IMERG) exhibited good performance while the performance of TRMM (TMPA) was slightly worse. The extreme temperature indexes, TXx and TNn, calculated based on the reanalysis of combined data showed a better consistency than the indexes calculated based on the observational data of meteorological stations. The CMADS temperature dataset exhibited a higher consistency with the data obtained from meteorological stations as well as the best accuracy (84% of the stations with the error value of TXx calculated from the CMADS dataset and observed data less than 3 °C). (2) The response of typical flood events to precipitation extremes were analyzed and evaluated; the spatial distribution of the precipitation in the combined dataset was used to quantitatively analyze the response of occurrence of typical flood events to precipitation extremes, and the typical flood events were found to be mainly caused by certain factors, such as lagging flood propagation in the upstream of the basin outlet. This study indicates that it is feasible to use the reanalyzed combined data products to calculate the extreme climate indexes of the Jinsha River Basin, especially in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River where there is a lack of meteorological observation stations. This study analyzes the potential response of the seasonal cycle of heatwaves (HWDI) and dry (CDD) and wet (CWD) spell indices over West Africa for the near- (2031–2060) and the far-future periods (2071–2100) under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5 scenarios using Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) simulations. Despite the fact that some relative biases (an underestimation of 30% for CDD, an overestimation of about 60% for CWD, and an overestimation of about 50% for HWDI) exist, during the historical period (1976–2005) in general, the CORDEX simulations and their ensemble mean outperform the seasonal variability in the above-mentioned indices over three defined subregions of West Africa (i.e., the Gulf of Guinea and Western and Eastern Sahel). They show high correlation coefficients (0.9 in general) and less RMSE. They project an increase (about 10 and 20 days) in heatwave days for both the near- and far-future periods over the whole West African region under both RCP scenarios. In addition, projections indicate that the Sahel regions will experience a decrease (about 5 days) in wet spell days from March to November, while in the Gulf of Guinea, a decrease (about 3 days) is projected throughout the year, except in the CCCLM simulation, which indicates an increase (about 5 days) during the retreat phase of the monsoon (October to December). Our results also highlight an increase (about 80%) in dry spells over the Sahel regions that are more pronounced during the March–November period, while over the Gulf of Guinea, an increase (about 40%) is projected over the entire year. Moreover, the months of increasing dry spells and decreasing wet spells coincide, suggesting that countries in these regions could be simultaneously exposed to dry seasons associated with a high risk of drought and heatwaves under future climate conditions. The ability of soil moisture (SM) to affect precipitation (P) is a vital part of the water-energy cycles. Accurately quantifying this coupling enhances the ability to predict hydroclimatic extremes like floods and droughts. In this study, the ability of soil moisture to affect precipitation (SM-P) is characterized by two parts: the influence of soil moisture on evapotranspiration (SM-ET), and the influence of evapotranspiration on precipitation (ET-P). We determined localized ET-P by incorporating the coupling between latent heat flux (LH) and LCL height, to optimize the estimation of the SM-P. This approach links SM more closely to P by considering the influence of surface fluxes. The results indicate that CMIP6 models exhibited the anticipated hotspot patterns for the three coupling metrics in transition regions. However, we observed that climate models generally exhibit weaker SM-P coupling compared to reanalysis models. Both SM-ET and SM-P showcase higher values wherein wet climate regions during dry years, and the converse occurs in dry regions. Due to sensitivity to climate change, the ET-P exhibits a more pronounced upward trend in the future. Under the background of global warming, the frequency and intensity of extreme climate have increased, especially extreme high temperatures. In order to correctly predict the changes in the extreme high temperatures in summer in China in this century, it is urgent to deepen the understanding of the characteristics and physical mechanisms of the extreme high temperatures in summer on the centennial timescale. Many researchers have explored the mechanism of the influences of the variability of the solar cycle on climate change, while the mechanism of the influences of the centennial variation of solar activity on climate change remains elusive. Here, we use the outputs from the Control (CTRL) experiment, Total solar irradiance and Orbital (TSI_ORB) experiment, and Orbital (ORB) experiment from Nanjing Normal University-Holocene (NNU-Hol) experiments to study the extreme high temperatures in summer in China during the Holocene. On the basis of verifying the consistency of the centennial period between the TSI (TSI_ORB minus ORB plus CTRL) experiment and the reconstructed data, we compared the centennial variation characteristics of the summer extreme high temperature in the CTRL experiment and the TSI experiment. It shows that under the modulation of total solar irradiance, the centennial spatial pattern of the summer extreme high temperatures changed from dipole mode to uniform mode, with 300-year and 500-year periodicity, compared to the influence of only internal variability. On the centennial time scale, the greatest difference is located in northeast China. The subsidence movement and the reduction of cloud cover caused by the anticyclone under the control of high-pressure lead to the increase of downward solar radiation, thus making a positive center is showed in northeast China on the impacts of total solar irradiance. Furthermore, the center of the Rossby wave train in the barotropic structure of the upper circulation related to the summer extreme high temperature significantly moves northward. This barotropic structure is composed of continuous pressure ridges from Eurasia to North America and the North Atlantic, which is conducive to the increase of the summer extreme high temperatures. Furthermore, we investigated the underlying physical mechanisms. Under the influence of total solar irradiance, the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) with the same centennial cycle as extreme high temperatures lead to obvious subsidence movement and increase of radiation flux, causing an increase in extreme high temperatures over northeast China. Germany's increasing temperatures and droughts are significantly impacting the hydrological realm. This study examines the implications of climate change on future droughts in a representative catchment within Germany's low mountain range. Findings of this research shed light on potential impacts on future seasonal water availability, aiding decision makers and stakeholders in managing regional climate change risks. Climate and drought indices, as well as the climatic water balance, are computed and analyzed until 2100, relative to a reference period. A high emission scenario (RCP8.5) and a climate protection scenario (RCP2.6) are considered to address uncertainties. Results reveal above-average warming in the study area compared to the national average. Under the RCP8.5 scenario, the far future exhibits an average of 44 annual heat days. Despite wetter winters, extended droughts persist. Water stress intensifies in summer and autumn, with a projected 68% increase in dry period duration. The findings emphasize the necessity of adaptation strategies, as even ambitious global warming mitigation efforts require regional adaptation. The study represents the first application of a Germany-wide, bias-adjusted, and regionalized dataset at catchment level. The study investigated the impact of temperature extremes on carbon emissions (CE) from crop production. (1) Background: Many scholars have studied climate extremes. However, the research on the relationship between temperature extremes and CE is not extensive, which deserves attention. (2) Methods: The study adopted a fixed-effect model to analyze the impact of temperature extremes on CE from crop production, and the moderating effect was tested using total factor productivity (TFP) in agriculture. (3) Results: Temperature extremes in Hebei Province were mainly reflected in a decline in the cold day index (TX10p) and a rise in the warm spell duration index (WSDI) and the number of summer days (SU25). Additionally, TX10p was positively correlated with CE. For every 1% reduction in TX10p, CE dropped by 0.237%. There was no significant correlation between WSDI and CE. Finally, the agricultural TFP had a significant moderating effect on CE, with each 1% increase resulting in a corresponding 0.081% decrease in CE. (4) Conclusions: The results indicated a warming trend in Hebei Province, which resulted in a decrease in the number of winter days, and reduced CE from crop production. Identifying the response of runoff changes to extreme climate evolution was of great scientific significance for the rational regulation of watershed water resources and the prevention of hydrological disasters. However, the time–frequency response relationships were not clear. The Yinjiang River watershed, a typical watershed with karst trough valley areas, was chosen to identify the impact of different climatic driving factors on runoff changes from 1984 to 2015. Continuous wavelet transform (CWT), cross-wavelet transform (XWT), and wavelet coherence transform (WTC) were performed to study the response relationship and time–frequency effect between runoff changes and extreme climate change at different time scales. The main results showed that: (1) Twelve extreme climate indices (ECIs) were detected to have a significant impact on runoff changes, mainly on a 6-year time scale; (2) The R10 and Rx1day in extreme precipitation index and SU34.4 and TNx in the extreme temperature index were the main driving factors of runoff changes, which had relatively large impacts on runoff changes in high and low energy vibration regions. However, the remaining eight ECIs that passed the 0.05 confidence level showed relatively large impacts on runoff changes only in low energy vibration regions; (3) The transition of the interaction between ECIs and runoff changes in high and low time–frequency scales was related to the abrupt change characteristics of the ECIs. The correlation of abrupt change was an important reason for the emergence of highly correlated regions that trigger high and low energy vibrations; (4) As a whole, the extreme precipitation events were ahead of runoff changes at the high time–frequency scale and exhibited small lag effects at the low time–frequency scale, while extreme temperature events were mainly ahead of runoff changes. This study has effectively revealed the impact of climate factors at different scales on runoff changes, and provides a theoretical understanding for regulating and managing water resources in karst basins. The flood hazard risks and vulnerability in the urban areas alongside major rivers of India have been gradually increasing due to extreme climatic events. The present study is intended to assess flood hazard vulnerability and potential risk areas and aims to ascertain the management strategies in Nabadwip Municipality, a statutory urban area of West Bengal. The multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) of selected criteria and geospatial techniques have been employed to determine the urban flood vulnerability in the study area. The study has been conducted using secondary datasets including relevant remotely sensed data and participant observation. The potential flood-affected zones have been determined using the normalized difference flood index (NDFI) and flood vulnerability index (FVI). The analysis of the standardized precipitation index (SPI) of 20 years of monthly precipitation shows the variability of seasonal rainfall distribution in the study area. Furthermore, the spatial distribution of the composite Ibrahim index of socio-economic development accents that the urban development of the study area was uneven. The municipal wards situated in the central and northeastern portions of Nabadwip Municipality were extremely vulnerable, whereas the western and southwestern wards were less vulnerable. It is also revealed from the strengths–weaknesses–opportunities–challenges (SWOC) of the principal management strategies of the flood situation analysis that the unplanned sewerage system is one of the most effective weaknesses in the area. All-embracing and integrative flood management strategies need to be implemented in the study area considering the intra-regional vulnerability and development for the resilient and sustainable development of the study area. The decadal variability of the summer extreme precipitation over southern China (EPSC) is remarkable, especially for the significant decadal enhancement after the 1990s. The study documented that the summer sea surface temperature (SST) over the North Atlantic and spring sea ice concentration (SIC) over the East Siberian Sea can significantly affect the EPSC. The summer SST over the North Atlantic influences the low-pressure cyclone in the western Pacific by modulating the SST over the tropical Pacific, thus affecting EPSC. A decrease in the SIC of the East Siberian Sea induces a negative Arctic Oscillation, which induces the increased SST over northwest Pacific and the anomalous cyclone over there, in turn, affecting EPSC. Both predictors have a quasi-period of 10–14 years, which provides useful predictive signals for EPSC. The leading 7-year SST and the leading 5-year SIC are chosen to establish the prediction model based on the decadal increment method, which can well predict the EPSC, especially for the shift in the early 1990s. Understanding the impact of climate change on runoff and its extremes is of great significance for water resource assessment and adaptation strategies, especially in water-scarce regions. This study aims to analyze the impact of future climate change on runoff and its extremes in the upper reaches of the Heihe River basin in northwest China. The projected runoff was derived using the Soil Water Assessment Tool with climate data from the CSIRO-MK-3-6-0 model under the scenario of RCP4.5, and a frequency analysis of runoff was performed by generalized extreme value distribution. The results indicate that, compared with the baseline period of 1961 to 2000, the minimum and maximum temperatures in the period 2031 to 2070 were predicted to increase by 2.5 °C on average. The precipitation in most months was also predicted to increase, with an average rise of 16.5%. The multi-year average runoff was projected to increase by 8%. Climate extreme events are becoming increasingly frequent worldwide, causing floods, drought, forest fires, landslides and heat or cold waves. Several studies have been developed on the assessment of trends in the occurrence of extreme events. However, most of these studies used traditional models, such as Poisson or negative binomial models. Thus, the main objective of this study is to use a space–time data counting approach in the modeling of the number of days with extreme precipitation as an alternative to the commonly used statistical methods. The study area is the Northeast Brazil region, and the analysis was carried out for the period between 1 January 1980 and 31 December 2010, by assessing the frequency of extreme precipitation represented by the R10 mm, R20 mm and R* indices. Climate extreme events have been observed more frequently since the 1970s throughout Ethiopia, which adversely affects the socio-economic development of the country, as its economy depends on agriculture, which, in turn, relies heavily on annual and seasonal rainfall. Climate extremes studies conducted in Ethiopia are mainly limited to a specific location or watershed, making it difficult to have insights at the national level. The present study thus aims to examine the observed climate extreme events in Ethiopia at both station and agro-ecological zone (AEZ) levels. Daily rainfall and temperature data for 47 and 37 stations, respectively (1986 up to 2020), were obtained from the National Meteorology Agency (NMA). The Modified Mann–Kendall (MMK) trend test and the Theil–Sen slope estimator were employed to estimate the trends in rainfall and temperature extremes. This study examines trends of 13 temperature and 10 rainfall extreme indices using RClimDex in R software. The results revealed that most of the extreme rainfall indices showed a positive trend in the majority of the climate stations. For example, an increase in consecutive dry days (CDD), very heavy rainfall days (R20), number of heavy rainfall days (R10) and consecutive wet days (CWD) were exhibited in most climate stations. In relation to AEZs, the greater number of extreme rainfall indices illustrated an upward trend in cool and sub-humid, cool and humid, and cool and moist AEZs, a declining trend in hot arid AEZ, and equal proportions of increasing and decreasing trends in warm semi-arid AEZs. Concerning extreme temperature indices, the result indicated an increasing trend of warm temperature extreme indices and a downward trend of cold temperature extreme indices in most of the climate stations, indicating the overall warming and dryness trends in the country. With reference to AEZs, an overall warming was exhibited in all AEZs, except in the hot arid AEZ. The observed trends in the rainfall and temperature extremes will have tremendous direct and indirect impacts on agriculture, water resources, health, and other sectors in the country. Therefore, the findings suggest the need for identifying and developing climate change adaptation strategies to minimize the ill effects of these extreme climate events on the social, economic, and developmental sectors. A study of the climatic characteristics and annual runoff of the Volga and Severnaya Dvina rivers demonstrates that, on the East European Plain (EEP), Early Twentieth Century Warming (ETCW) manifested in a multiyear drought between 1934 and 1940; this drought has no analogues in this region in terms of intensity and duration according to Palmer's classification, and caused extreme hydrological events. The circulation conditions during this event were characterized by an extensive anticyclone over Eastern Europe, combined with a cyclonic anomaly in the circumpolar region. An analysis of the spatial features of sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies indicate that the surface air temperature (SAT) anomalies in July on the EEP during ETCW were related not only to the North Atlantic (NA) warming and positive AMO phase, but also to a certain spatial pattern of SST anomalies characteristic of the 1920–1950 period. The difference between the SST anomalies of the opposite sign in the different NA zones, used as the indicator of the obtained spatial pattern, shows the quite close relations between the July SAT anomalies on the EEP and the atmospheric circulation patterns responsible for them. The positive phase of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and the expansion of the subtropical high-pressure belt to the north and to the east can be considered as global-scale drivers of this phenomenon. The AMO also impacts the sea ice cover in the Barents–Kara Sea region, which, in turn, could have led to specific atmospheric circulation patterns and contributed to droughts on the EEP in the 1930s. Climate change is one of the biggest health threats facing humanity and can directly affect human health through heat waves. This study aims to evaluate excess deaths during heat waves between the summer months of 2004 and 2017 in Istanbul and to determine a definition of heat waves that can be used in the development of an early warning system, a part of prospective urban heat-health action plans. In this study, heat waves were determined using the Excess Heat Factor, an index based on a three-day-averaged daily mean temperature. The death rates during heat waves and non-heat wave days of the summer months were compared with a Z test of the difference of natural logarithms. Thirty heat waves were recorded in Istanbul during the summer months of 2004–2017. In 67% of the heat waves, the death rate was significantly higher than the reference period and 4281 excess deaths were recorded. The mortality risk was especially higher during heat waves of higher intensity. The study showed an excess risk of mortality during heat waves in Istanbul, and the findings suggest that the Excess Heat Factor could be an appropriate tool for an early warning system in Istanbul. Extreme climate events have a significant impact both on the ecological environment and human society, and it is crucial to analyze the spatial–temporal evolutionary trends of extreme climate. Based on the RClimDex model, this study used trend analysis, probability density function, and wavelet coherence analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal variation characteristics of extreme climate indices and their response mechanisms to teleconnection patterns. The results of the study show that: (1) All the extreme precipitation indices, except max 1-day precipitation amount, max 5-day precipitation amount, and extremely wet days increased, with no significant abrupt changes. The extreme warm indices increased and extreme cold indices decreased. The years with abrupt changes were mainly distributed between 1988 and 1997. (2) Spatially, the extreme precipitation indices of most meteorological stations decreased, except for the simple daily intensity index and the number of very heavy precipitation days. The extreme warm indices of most meteorological stations increased, and the extreme cold indices decreased. (3) Except for consecutive dry days, the frequency of extreme precipitation indices increased significantly, the severity and frequency of high-temperature events increased, while the frequency of low-temperature events increased, but the severity decreased. The results of rescaled range (R/S) analysis indicated that the climate in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region will further tend to be warm and humid in the future. (4) The Polar/Eurasia Pattern, the East Atlantic Pattern, the Arctic Oscillation, and the East Atlantic/West Russian Pattern were most closely associated with extreme climate events in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region. Changes in precipitation and temperature, especially in the Himalayan region, will have repercussions for socio-economic conditions in the future. Thus, this study aimed to understand the climatic trend and changes in one of the Himalayan River basins, i.e., Gandaki River Basin (GRB), Nepal. In particular, we analysed the historical (1985–2014) and projected (2015–2100) precipitation and temperature trend and their extremes using observation and 13 bias-corrected Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets. Additionally, the relationship between extreme precipitation/temperature indices and ocean-atmospheric circulation patterns were also analysed. The results showed an increasing trend of precipitation amount and temperature at annual and seasonal scales with the highest upward trend for precipitation in monsoon season and temperature in winter season. Among nine precipitation indices analysed, the wet extremes are projected to increase in all Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSP) scenarios; with the highest increment of high-intensity related extremes (R10 mm and R20 mm). In contrast, dry spells will decline in the distant-future (2075–2100) as compared to near (2015–2044) and mid-future (2045–2074). Further, increment in temperature trend resulted in a decrease in cold related temperature extremes and an increase in warm related extremes. Furthermore, it was observed that the changes in precipitation and temperature extremes over GRB were influenced by large-scale ocean-atmospheric circulation patterns. The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Sea Surface Temperature (SST) and Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) were found to have a major role in driving precipitation extremes while AMO, SST and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) have strong influence on temperature extremes. Deep learning artificial intelligence technology, which has the advantages of nonlinear mapping ability, massive information extraction ability, spatial-temporal modeling ability, and so on, provides new ideas and methods for further improving the accuracy of weather and climate extreme event prediction. A transfer learning CNN (Convolutional Neural Networks) classification model is established to classify the circulation patterns, along with the newly reconstructed dataset of regional persistent historical heavy rain events, daily rainfall data of 2474 observational stations, and the NCEP/NCAR global reanalysis data of daily geopotential height field in 1981–2018. Different from previous classifications, usually with one level variable, here, in addition to 500 hPa heights, 200 hPa zonal winds and 850 hPa meridional winds over the key areas are also considered in the model. The results show that the multi-level circulation pattern classification based on the transfer learning CNN network has a higher accuracy in the independent test than the single-level model, with the accuracy reaching 92.5% (while only 85% for the single-level model). The spatial correlation coefficient of precipitation between each typical mode and related patterns obtained by the multi-level transfer learning CNN classification is greater than that obtained by the single-level transfer learning CNN, and the variance of 500 hPa heights between each typical mode and the associated patterns is also greater than that obtained by the single-level transfer learning CNN. These results show that the performance of the classification by the multi-level transfer learning CNN model is better than that by the single-level transfer learning CNN. The study is helpful to develop circulation classifications related to large-scale weather or climate disaster events and then to provide a physical basis for further improving the forecast effect and extending the valid time of the forecast through combining the numerical model products. Developing the engineering design standard of wind speed is a key aspect of the climate research in the Yangtze River Inland Waterway (YRIW), which is highly sensitive to extreme weather and climate processes. An engineering design wind speed projection model was established to evaluate the distribution of extreme wind speeds in the YRIW region at spatiotemporal scales from 1979 to 2100, integrating the Weibull distribution and generalized extreme value (GEV) distribution characteristics. We also used high-precision climate model products and integrated analysis methods to predict the evolution of engineering design wind speeds in the study area in the future. The results show that: (1) The maximum wind speed in the study area shows a decline—recovery trend in the historical period in general and a weak increase in Wuhan and Shanghai. (2) The maximum wind speed does not follow the Weibull distribution, and the extracted extreme wind speed types include type I, II, and III GEV distributions. (3) The updated inland port project design wind speed can meet the climatic and topographic characteristics of the YRIW. (4) The model of CNRM-CM6-1-HR product accurately captures the spatial and temporal characteristics of the maximum wind speed. (5) In the future, the design wind speed shows a slight decrease in Shanghai, Jiujiang and Yueyang. These findings provide a scientific theoretical reference and engineering reference for the development of design wind speeds for inland port projects at various cross-sections in the YRIW. Climate is a key factor in agriculture, but we are unable to adequately predict future climates. Although some studies have addressed the short and long-run impacts of climate change on agriculture, few of them specifically focused on the analysis of its thermal component. Climatic regions with an extreme thermal range are a special case, as seasonal contrasts complicate the picture. Based on the above, the purpose of the paper is twofold. First, we review methods and indices used for the estimation of changes in the thermal component of the climate and demonstrate the usefulness of a sensitivity assessment methodology that gives some indication of the likely spatial extent of areas of high or low sensitivity to climate change and the size of the potential impact of that change, which is specifically beneficial in regions with high temperature extremes. Secondly, we constructed a composite indicator, called the Growing Degree Day Sensitivity Index (GDDSI) and defined as the percentage change in Growing Degree Day (GDD) for warming scenarios +1, +2 and +3 °C. GDDs were calculated for threshold base air temperatures of 0, 5, 10 and 15 °C, and a high-temperature limit of 30 °C. A GDD sensitivity analysis was applied to the thermally extreme climate of the Russian Far East. We analyzed the data of 50 weather stations across the study region over the period 1966–2017. The results show a strong GDDSI north-to-south gradient. In most cases, the sensitivity does not increase significantly as the warming rate increases. The higher the base threshold, the higher the sensitivity: GDDs with a threshold at 15 °C had the highest sensitivity in the far north of the study area where conditions are currently marginal for crop growth. The sensitivity analysis circumnavigates the difficulty of uncertainty in knowing what future climate to expect and informs planning decisions. This paper investigates the temperature and precipitation extremes over the Arabian Peninsula using data from the regional climate model RegCM4 forced by three Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models and ERA–Interim reanalysis data. Indices of extremes are calculated using daily temperature and precipitation data at 27 meteorological stations located across Saudi Arabia in line with the suggested procedure from the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) for the present climate (1986–2005) using 1981–2000 as the reference period. The results show that RegCM4 accurately captures the main features of temperature extremes found in surface observations. The results also show that RegCM4 with the CLM land–surface scheme performs better in the simulation of precipitation and minimum temperature, while the BATS scheme is better than CLM in simulating maximum temperature. Among the three CMIP5 models, the two best performing models are found to accurately reproduce the observations in calculating the extreme indices, while the other is not so successful. The reason for the good performance by these two models is that they successfully capture the circulation patterns and the humidity fields, which in turn influence the temperature and precipitation patterns that determine the extremes over the study region. There are multiple extreme events underway in the Arctic that are beyond previous records: rain in Greenland, Alaska weather variability, and ecosystem reorganizations in the Barents and the northern Bering Sea associated with climate change and sea-ice loss. Such unique extreme events represent a philosophical challenge for interpretation, i.e., a lack of statistical basis, as well as important information for regional adaptation to climate change. These changes are affecting regional food security, human/wildlife health, cultural activities, and marine wildlife conservation. Twenty years ago, the Arctic was more resilient to climate change than now, as sea ice had a broader extent and was three times thicker than today. These new states cannot be assigned probabilities because one cannot a priori conceive of these states. They often have no historical analogues. A way forward for adaptation to future extremes is through scenario/narrative approaches; a recent development in climate change policy is through decision making under deep uncertainty (DMDU). Climate change is undeniable, and its effects, like droughts and intense precipitation, evidence this reality. However, many questions remain unanswered, such as climate extremes' future frequency and intensity. International collaboration projects such as the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX)-Coordinated Output for Regional Evaluations (CORE) have emerged to address these questions, creating protocols to facilitate the intercomparison among simulations obtained by different regional climate models (RCMs). Given this context, this study aims to describe the projected changes in the extreme precipitation events over the South America domain by using a set of projections of three RCMs (Eta, RegCM, and REMO) under the CORDEX-CORE framework (except Eta). These models were nested in different global climate models (GCMs) from Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5) under the RCP8.5 scenario and integrated with a grid space of 25 km. In addition, six climate indices (PRCPTOT, SDII, R95p, P95, CDD, and CWD) were computed by season for the historical period (1995–2014) and four future time-slices (2020–2039, 2040–2059, 2060–2079, and 2080–2099). For brevity, this study focuses on the austral summer. RCMs are generally capable of representing the spatial pattern of climate indices but with differences in intensity. The ensemble with all RCMs shows a slightly better spatial correlation with the reference data than the ensemble of each RCM. The signal of the projections is similar between RegCM and REMO and, in general, opposite to Eta (mainly in the South Atlantic Convergence Zone region). Of the six climate indices analyzed, the ensemble performed with the three RCMs projects statistically significant negative (positive) trends for four indices in the Amazon (La Plata Basin), indicating a signal of dry (wet) conditions increasing towards the end of the century. Furthermore, both regions have significant positive (negative) trends of consecutive dry (wet) days. Extreme events such as rainstorms and floods are likely to increase in frequency due to the influence of global warming, which is expected to put considerable pressure on water resources. This paper presents a regional frequency analysis of precipitation extremes and its spatio-temporal pattern characteristics based on well-known index-flood L-moments methods and the application of advanced statistical tests and spatial analysis techniques. The results indicate the following conclusions. First, during the period between 1969 and 2015, the annual precipitation extremes at Fengjie station show a decreasing trend, but the Wuhan station shows an increasing trend, and the other 24 stations have no significant trend at a 5% confidence level. Secondly, the Hanjiang River Basin can be categorized into three homogenous regions by hierarchical clustering analysis with the consideration of topography and mean precipitation in these areas. The GEV, GNO, GPA and P III distributions fit better for most of the basin and MARE values range from 3.19% to 6.41% demonstrating that the best-fit distributions for each homogenous region is adequate in predicting the quantiles estimates. Thirdly, quantile estimates are reliable enough when the return period is less than 100 years, however estimates for a higher return period (e.g., 1000 years) become unreliable. Further, the uncertainty of quantiles estimations is growing with the growing return periods and the estimates based on R95P series have a smaller uncertainty to describe the extreme precipitation in the Hanjiang river basin (HJRB). Furthermore, In the HJRB, most of the extreme precipitation events (more than 90%) occur during the rainy season between May and October, and more than 30% of these extreme events concentrate in July, which is mainly impacted by the sub-tropical monsoon climate. Finally, precipitation extremes are mainly concentrated in the areas of Du River, South River and Daba Mountain in region I and Tianmen, Wuhan and Zhongxiang stations in region III, located in the upstream of Danjiangkou Reservoir and Jianghan Plain respectively. There areas provide sufficient climate conditions (e.g., humidity and precipitation) responsible for the occurring floods and will increase the risk of natural hazards to these areas. Extreme climate events undoubtedly have essential impacts on terrestrial ecosystems, but the spatiotemporal patterns of extreme climate events at regional scales are unclear. In this study, based on observations and 14 CMIP6 global climate models, we analyzed the spatiotemporal changes in extreme temperature events at the mainland China scale and different basin scales in historical and future periods, and their relative importance for the changes in mean temperature (Tmean). The results show that at the mainland China scale in the historical period, extreme cold days and extreme cold nights significantly decreased, while Tmean, extreme warm days, and extreme warm nights significantly increased. However, the rates of increase in Tmean and extreme temperature events in the Continental Basin, Southwest Basin and Yellow River Basin are higher than that at the mainland China scale. The multi-model ensemble is the best model for simulating extreme temperature events in mainland China. At the mainland China scale in the future, the trends of Tmean and extreme temperature events are slow, rapid, and extremely rapid under SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5, respectively. In addition, the changes in the Continental Basin and Songhua and Liaohe River Basin are larger than those at the mainland China scale. In the historical and future periods, the extreme temperature events that have a great influence on the Tmean at the Chinese mainland scale and different basin scales are all related to the minimum temperature. Land use and land cover change (LULCC) alters the character of the land surface and directly impacts the climate. The impacts of LULCC on historical and future climate have been largely investigated, mostly using simulations with or without land use change. However, it is still not clear to what extent the projections of future climate change depend on the choice of land use scenario, which can provide important guidance on using land use and land management as a tool for regional climate mitigation. Here, using ten Earth system models participating in future land use policy sensitivity experiments in Land Use Model Intercomparison Project (LUMIP), we assessed the impact of two different land use scenarios (SSP1-2.6 and SSP3-7.0) on extreme climate. The results demonstrate that the use of different land use change scenarios has a substantial effect on the projections of regional climate extreme changes. Our study also reveals that, compared with other anthropogenic forcings, land use change has a considerable contribution to regional temperature extreme changes, with the contribution ranging from −14.0% to 10.3%, and the contribution to regional precipitation extreme change is larger, with a range of −118.4~138.8%. The global climate effects of land use change are smaller in magnitude than regional effects, with a small (5%) contribution to temperature extreme change. We also found a large spread in the model's responses to LULCC, especially for precipitation extremes, suggesting that observation-based studies on reducing models' uncertainties are needed to obtain more robust future projections of regional climate change. The South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) is a national strategic project for water shortages in northern China. Climate change will affect the availability of water resources in both source and receiving areas. A grid-based RCCC-WBM model based on climate projections from nine Global Climate Models under SSP2-4.5 was used for analyzing the changes in temperature, precipitation, and streamflow in the near future (2025–2045, NF) and far future (2040–2060, FF) relative to the baseline (1956–2000). The results showed that: (1) the temperature of the western route will increase significantly in the NF and FF with an extent of 1.6 °C and 2.0 °C, respectively, (2) precipitation will very likely increase even though Global Climate Model (GCM) projections are quite dispersed and uncertain, and (3) over half of the GCMs projected that streamflow of receiving area will slightly increase with a rate of 1.68% [−8.67%, 12.3%] and 2.78% [−3.30%, 11.0%] in the NF and FF, respectively. Climate change will support the planning of the western route to a certain extent. However, water supply risk induced by the extreme situation of climate change should be paid adequate consideration when the project operates in practice due to the large dispersion and uncertainty of GCM projections. This study analyzes 50 annual climate change indices related to temperature and precipitation in the Valley of Mexico basin for the period 1951–2010. First, a quality and homogenization analysis of 90 weather stations (categorized as urban, suburban, and rural) in the basin was performed using the Climatol algorithm. The non-parametric Mann–Kendall test and the Sen's slope method were applied to determine the existence of a trend and to estimate the magnitude of the change in extreme climate indices, respectively. To eliminate the serial correlation problem, the lag-1 method and the Patakamuri tests were used. Statistically significant positive trends were found for SU, TMm, TNm, TNn, TX90p, and WSDI, as well as negative ones for FD, TX10p, TN10p, CSDI, and HDDheat18. The results seem to support an influence of anthropogenic global warming on the study region, rather than local effects of urbanization. However, it is likely that some significant differences in the urban change rate of some indices could be due to local effects, such as the difference in land cover that occurs between urban and rural stations. Not enough statistically significant results were found for the climate change indices related to precipitation in most of the stations. Compared to other studies in the Mexico City area, the main contribution of this study is the analysis of 50 climate indices in a 60-year period working with a quality-controlled and homogenized database. Climate change continues to increase the intensity, frequency and impacts of weather and climate extremes. This work uses bias-adjusted Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase six (CMIP6) model datasets to investigate the future changes in temperature extremes over Mediterranean (MED) and Sahara (SAH) regions. The mid- (2041–2070) and far-future (2071–2100) are studied under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways: SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios. Quantile mapping function greatly improved the performance of CMIP6 by reducing the notable biases to match the distribution of observation data, the Climate Prediction Center (CPC). Results show persistent significant warming throughout the 21st century, increasing with the increase in radiative forcing. The MED will record a higher increase in temperature extremes as compared to SAH. The warming is supported by the projected reduction in cold days (TX10p) and cold nights (TN10p), with the reduction in the number of cold nights exceeding cold days. Notably, warm spell duration index (WSDI) and summer days (SU) have a positive trend in both timelines over the entire study area. There is a need to simulate how climate sensitive sectors, such as water and agriculture, are likely to be affected by projected changes under different scenarios for informed decision making in the choice and implementation of adaptation and mitigation effective measures. The present study evaluates the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) Earth Exchange Global Daily Downscaled Projections (NEX-GDDP) dataset that provides statistically downscaled CMIP5 historical and future climate projections of the daily precipitation sum and extreme temperatures at high spatial resolution. A multimodel ensemble from all 21 available models is composed and compared against gridded observations from E-OBS. The study is performed over Southeast Europe for the whole time span of the historical period of NEX-GDDP 1950–2005. The performance of the NEX-GDDP data was evaluated at multiple time scales such as annual, seasonal, monthly, and daily. The skill of the multimodel ensemble to reproduce the interannual variability, as well as the long-term trend, is also evaluated. Moreover, key climate indices of the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI), derived from the ensemble extreme temperatures and precipitation are superimposed on their counterparts based on the reference dataset E-OBS. Findings of the performed research indicate that NEX-GDDP parameters are in good agreement with the reference over the considered period on monthly, seasonal and annual scales which agrees with the outcomes from similar studies for other parts of the world. There are also no systematic differences in the pattern of the biases of the minimum and maximum temperature. Generally, the multimodel ensemble reproduces the extreme temperatures significantly better than the precipitation sum. The analysis reveals also the nonnegligible inefficiency of the NEX-GDDP ensemble to reproduce the long-term trend of the considered parameters as well as the climate extremes expressed with the ETCCDI indices. Historical and future projected changes in climatic patterns over the largest irrigated basin in the world, the Indus River Basin (IRB), threaten agricultural production and food security in Pakistan, in particular for vulnerable farming communities. To build a more detailed understanding of the impacts of climate change on agriculture s in the IRB, the present study analyzes (1) observed trends in average temperature, precipitation and related extreme indicators, as well as seasonal shifts over a recent historical period (1997–2016); and (2) statistically downscaled future projections (up to 2100) from a set of climate models in conjunction with crop-specific information for the four main crops of the IRB: wheat, cotton, rice and sugarcane. Key findings show an increasing trend of about over 0.1 °C/year in observed minimum temperature across the study area over the historical period, but no significant trend in maximum temperature. Historical precipitation shows a positive annual increase driven mainly by changes in August and September. Future projections highlight continued warming resulting in critical heat thresholds for the four crops analyzed being increasingly exceeded into the future, in particular in the Kharif season. Concurrently, inter-annual rainfall variability is projected to increase up to 10–20% by the end of the 21st century, augmenting uncertainty of water availability in the basin. These findings provide insight into the nature of recent climatic shifts in the IRB and emphasize the importance of using climate impact assessments to develop targeted investments and efficient adaptation measures to ensure resilience of agriculture in Pakistan into the future. Australia experiences a variety of climate extremes that result in loss of life and economic and environmental damage. This paper provides a first evaluation of the performance of state-of-the-art Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) global climate models (GCMs) in simulating climate extremes over Australia. Here, we evaluate how well 37 individual CMIP6 GCMs simulate the spatiotemporal patterns of 12 climate extremes over Australia by comparing the GCMs against gridded observations (Australian Gridded Climate Dataset). This evaluation is crucial for informing, interpreting, and constructing multimodel ensemble future projections of climate extremes over Australia, climate-resilience planning, and GCM selection while conducting exercises like dynamical downscaling via GCMs. We find that temperature extremes (maximum-maximum temperature -TXx, number of summer days -SU, and number of days when maximum temperature is greater than 35 °C -Txge35) are reasonably well-simulated in comparison to precipitation extremes. However, GCMs tend to overestimate (underestimate) minimum (maximum) temperature extremes. GCMs also typically struggle to capture both extremely dry (consecutive dry days -CDD) and wet (99th percentile of precipitation -R99p) precipitation extremes, thus highlighting the underlying uncertainty of GCMs in capturing regional drought and flood conditions. Typically for both precipitation and temperature extremes, UKESM1-0-LL, FGOALS-g3, and GCMs from Met office Hadley Centre (HadGEM3-GC31-MM and HadGEM3-GC31-LL) and NOAA (GFDL-ESM4 and GFDL-CM4) consistently tend to show good performance. Our results also show that GCMs from the same modelling group and GCMs sharing key modelling components tend to have similar biases and thus are not highly independent.

Climate change has a strong impact on inland water bodies such as lakes. This means that the increase in lake temperature recorded in recent decades-in Europe as well-can change the evaporation regime of the lakes. This, together with the variation of the water cycle, in particular precipitation, implies that the water mass balance of lakes may vary due to climate change. Water mass balance modeling is therefore of paramount importance to monitor lakes in the context of global warming. Although many studies have focused on such a modeling, there is no shared approach that can be used for any lake across the globe, irrespective of the size. This becomes even more problematic for shallow and small lakes, for which few studies exist. For this reason, in this paper the use of reanalysis data, in particular ERA5-Land provided by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), is proposed for the mass balance modeling. In fact, ERA5-Land has a global coverage and it is the only data source comprising a specific model for lakes, the Fresh-water Lake model (FLake). The chosen case study is the Trasimeno lake, a small and shallow lake located in Central Italy. The use of the reanalysis was preceded by data validation by considering both ground-based and satellite observations. The results show that there is a good agreement between the observed monthly variation of the lake level, ΔH, and the corresponding values of the water storage, δ, computed by means of the ERA5-Land data (Pearson coefficient larger than 70%). Discrepancies between observations and the ERA5-Land data happen in periods characterized in Europe by an extreme climate anomaly. This promising result encourages the use of ERA5-Land for other lakes.

This paper investigates the temperature and precipitation extremes over the Arabian Peninsula using data from the regional climate model RegCM4 forced by three Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) models and ERA−Interim reanalysis data. Indices of extremes are calculated using daily temperature and precipitation data at 27 meteorological stations located across Saudi Arabia in line with the suggested procedure from the Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices (ETCCDI) for the present climate (1986−2005) using 1981−2000 as the reference period. The results show that RegCM4 accurately captures the main features of temperature extremes found in surface observations. The results also show that RegCM4 with the CLM land−surface scheme performs better in the simulation of precipitation and minimum temperature, while the BATS scheme is better than CLM in simulating maximum temperature. Among the three CMIP5 models, the two best performing models are found to accurately reproduce the observations in calculating the extreme indices, while the other is not so successful. The reason for the good performance by these two models is that they successfully capture the circulation patterns and the humidity fields, which in turn influence the temperature and precipitation patterns that determine the extremes over the study region.

Global warming is increasing the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events around the world. The extreme climate in plateau and mountainous areas is sensitive and fragile. Based on the software Rclimdex 1.0, the spatio-temporal variation characteristics of 27 extreme climate indices at 120 meteorological stations were calculated in Yunnan from 1960 to 2019. The results show that the extreme temperature is rising, and the warming rate at night is higher than that in the daytime. It showed a trend of warming and drying, and precipitation was concentrated into more intense bursts. Extreme temperature cold indices (TX10p, TN10p, FD0, ID0, and CSDI) were negatively correlated with extreme precipitation indices (R × 5 day, PRCPTOT, R10 mm, R20 mm, and R25 mm). Extreme temperature warmth indices (TX90p and TN90p) were positively correlated with extreme precipitation indices (R × 5 day, CWD, PRCPTOT, R10 mm, R20 mm, and R25 mm). The change rate of extreme temperature does not increase linearly with altitude. The increase in middle-altitude and high-altitude areas is higher than that in low-altitude areas. Compared with ENSO and AO, NAO is a vital circulation pattern affecting the extreme climate in Yunnan. The influence of NAO on Yunnan's extreme climate indices is most significant in the current month and the second month that follows. NAO was negatively correlated with extreme temperature warm indices (TN90p, TX90p, SU25, and TR20). NAO positively correlates with the extreme cold temperature indices (TN10p and TX10p). Except that ENSO has a significant effect on CDD, the effect of the general circulation patterns on the extreme temperature indices was more significant than that on the extreme precipitation indices in Yunnan. The results of this study are helpful to further understand and predict the characteristics of extreme climatic events and the factors affecting their geographical locations and atmospheric circulation patterns in Yunnan. Weather forecasting, especially that of extreme climatic events, has gained considerable attention among researchers due to their impacts on natural ecosystems and human life. The applicability of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in non-linear process forecasting has significantly contributed to hydro-climatology. The efficiency of neural network functions depends on the network structure and parameters. This study proposed a new approach to forecasting a one-day-ahead maximum temperature time series for South Korea to discuss the relationship between network specifications and performance by employing various scenarios for the number of parameters and hidden layers in the ANN model. Specifically, a different number of trainable parameters (i.e., the total number of weights and bias) and distinctive numbers of hidden layers were compared for system-performance effects. If the parameter sizes were too large, the root mean square error (RMSE) would be generally increased, and the model's ability was impaired. Besides, too many hidden layers would reduce the system prediction if the number of parameters was high. The number of parameters and hidden layers affected the performance of ANN models for time series forecasting competitively. The result showed that the five-hidden layer model with 49 parameters produced the smallest RMSE at most South Korean stations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In semi-arid regions of the world, knowledge about the long-term hydroclimate variability is essential to analyze and evaluate the impact of current climate change on ecosystems. We present the first tree-ring δ18O based hydroclimatic reconstruction for northern semi-arid Iran spanning the period 1515–2015. A highly significant correlation between tree-ring δ18O variations of juniper trees and spring (April–June) precipitation reveals a major influence of spring water availability during the early growing season. The driest period of the past 501 years occurred in the 16th century while the 18th century was the wettest, during which the overall highest frequency of wet year events occurred. A gradual decline in spring precipitation is evident from the beginning of the 19th century, pointing to even drier climate conditions. The analysis of dry/wet events indicates that the frequency of years with relatively dry spring increased over the last three centuries, while the number of wet events decreased. Our findings are in accordance with historical Persian disaster records (e.g., the severe droughts of 1870–1872, 1917–1919; severe flooding of 1867, the 1930s, and 1950). Correlation analyses between the reconstruction and different atmospheric circulation indices revealed no significant influence of large-scale drivers on spring precipitation in northern Iran. Floods and droughts are driven, in part, by spatial patterns of extreme rainfall. Heat waves are driven by spatial patterns of extreme temperature. It is therefore of interest to design statistical methodologies that allow the rapid identification of likely patterns of extreme rain or temperature from observed historical data. The standard work-horse for the rapid identification of patterns of climate variability in historical data is Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and its variants. But PCA optimizes for variance not spatial extremes, and so there is no particular reason why the first PCA spatial pattern should identify, or even approximate, the types of patterns that may drive floods, droughts or heatwaves, even if the linear assumptions underlying PCA are correct. We present an alternative pattern identification algorithm that makes the same linear assumptions as PCA, but which can be used to explicitly optimize for spatial extremes. We call the method Directional Component Analysis (DCA), since it involves introducing a preferred direction, or metric, such as "sum of all points in the spatial field". We compare the first PCA and DCA spatial patterns for U.S. and China winter and summer rainfall anomalies, using the sum metric for the definition of DCA in order to focus on total rainfall anomaly over the domain. In three out of four of the examples the first DCA spatial pattern is more uniform over a wide area than the first PCA spatial pattern and as a result is more obviously relevant to large-scale flooding or drought. Also, in all cases the definitions of PCA and DCA result in the first PCA spatial pattern having the larger explained variance of the two patterns, while the first DCA spatial pattern, when scaled appropriately, has a higher likelihood and greater total rainfall anomaly, and indeed is the pattern with the highest total rainfall anomaly for a given likelihood. The first DCA spatial pattern is arguably the best answer to the question: what single spatial pattern is most likely to drive large total rainfall anomalies in the future? This work examines drought and flood events over Kenya from 1981 to 2016 using the Standardized Precipitation–Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). The spatiotemporal analysis of dry and wet events was conducted for 3 and 12 months. Extreme drought incidences were observed in the years 1987, 2000, 2006, and 2009 for SPEI-3, whilst the SPEI-12 demonstrated the manifestation of drought during the years 2000 and 2006. The SPEI showed that the wettest periods, 1997 and 1998, coincided with the El Nino event for both time steps. SPEI-3 showed a reduction in moderate drought events, while severe and extreme cases were on the increase tendencies towards the end of the twentieth century. Conversely, SPEI-12 depicted an overall increase in severe drought occurrence over the study location with ab observed intensity of −1.54 and a cumulative frequency of 64 months during the study period. Wet events showed an upward trend in the western and central highlands, while the rest of the regions showed an increase in dry events during the study period. Moreover, moderate dry/wet events predominated, whilst extreme events occurred least frequently across all grid cells. It is apparent that the study area experienced mild extreme dry events in both categories, although moderately severe dry events dominated most parts of the study area. A high intensity and frequency of drought was noted in SPEI-3, while the least occurrences of extreme events were recorded in SPEI-12. Though drought event prevailed across the study area, there was evidence of extreme flood conditions over the recent decades. During the last decades, global and regional climate models have been widely used for the estimation of future climate conditions. Unfortunately, the models' estimated values present important biases relative to the observed values, especially when the estimations refer to extremes. Consequently, several researchers have studied several statistical methods that are able to minimize the biases between climate models and observed values. The present study evaluates a new statistical method for bias correction: The triangular irregular network (TIN)-copula method. This method is a combination of the triangular irregular networks and the copula theory. In the present research, the new method is applied to ten Mediterranean stations and its results are compared with the bias-corrected values of three other widely used methods: The delta, the scaling, and the empirical quantile mapping methods. The analysis was made for maximum mean temperature (TMX) and minimum mean temperature (TMN) as well as for extreme precipitation (R99). According to the results, the TIN-copula method is able to correct extreme temperature and precipitation values, estimated by regional climate models, with high accuracy. Additionally, it is proven that the TIN-copula method is a useful tool for bias correction as it presents several advantages compared with the other methods, and it is recommended for future works. The occurrence of hydrological extremes in the Amazon region and the associated sediment loss during rainfall events are key features in the global climate system. Climate extremes alter the sediment and carbon balance but the ecological consequences of such changes are poorly understood in this region. With the aim of examining the interactions between precipitation and landscape-scale controls of sediment export from the Amazon basin, we developed a parsimonious hydro-climatological model on a multi-year series (1997–2014) of sediment discharge data taken at the outlet of Óbidos (Brazil) watershed (the narrowest and swiftest part of the Amazon River). The calibrated model (correlation coefficient equal to 0.84) captured the sediment load variability of an independent dataset from a different watershed (the Magdalena River basin), and performed better than three alternative approaches. Our model captured the interdecadal variability and the long-term patterns of sediment export. In our reconstruction of yearly sediment discharge over 1859–2014, we observed that landscape erosion changes are mostly induced by single storm events, and result from coupled effects of droughts and storms over long time scales. By quantifying temporal variations in the sediment produced by weathering, this analysis enables a new understanding of the linkage between climate forcing and river response, which drives sediment dynamics in the Amazon basin.
