Objective: Laryngeal preservation and a radical cure are the treatment goals for laryngeal carcinoma, and larynx-preserving therapy is generally preferred for early-stage laryngeal carcinoma. When laryngeal carcinoma recurs locally, patients are often forced to undergo total laryngectomy, resulting in loss of vocal function. However, many patients with laryngeal carcinoma who have residual or recurrent disease after radiotherapy wish to preserve their voice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of using BNCT as a larynx-preserving treatment for residual or recurrent laryngeal carcinomas following radical irradiation., Patients and Methods: This study included 15 patients who underwent BNCT for residual or recurrent laryngeal carcinoma after radical laryngeal carcinoma irradiation. The number of treatment sessions for all patients was one irradiation. Before BNCT, the recurrent laryngeal carcinoma stage was rT1aN0, rT2N0, rT2N1, rT3N0, rT3N1, and rT4aN0 in one, six, one, three, one, and three patients, respectively. The median maximum tumor diameter before BNCT was 15 mm (8-22 mm). All patients underwent a tracheostomy before BNCT to mitigate the risk of upper airway stenosis due to laryngeal edema after BNCT. Treatment efficacy was evaluated retrospectively using monthly laryngoscopy after BNCT and contrast-enhanced CT scans at 3 months. The safety of treatment was evaluated based on examination findings and interviews with patients., Results: The median hospital stay after BNCT was 2 days (1-6). The response rate at three months after BNCT in 15 patients with locally recurrent laryngeal carcinoma was 93.3 %, and the CR rate was 73.3 %. The most frequent adverse event associated with BNCT was laryngeal edema, which occurred in nine patients the day after BNCT. The average course of laryngeal edema peaked on the second day after BNCT and almost recovered after 1 week in all patients. One patient had bilateral vocal fold movement disorders. None had dyspnea because of prophylactic tracheostomy. No grade four or higher adverse events occurred. Other grade 2 adverse events included pharyngeal mucositis, diarrhea, and sore throat. Three months after BNCT, tracheostomy tubes were removed in nine patients, retinal cannulas were placed in three patients, and voice cannulas were placed in three patients., Conclusions: BNCT for locally recurrent laryngeal carcinoma can safely deliver radical irradiation to tumor tissues, even in patients undergoing radical irradiation. BNCT has shown antitumor effects against recurrent laryngeal carcinoma. Objective: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a relatively rare genetic disorder that affects approximately 1 in 20,000 people. Approximately 50 genes are currently known to cause PCD. In light of differences in causative genes and the medical system in Japan compared with other countries, a practical guide was needed for the diagnosis and management of Japanese PCD patients., Methods: An ad hoc academic committee was organized under the Japanese Rhinologic Society to produce a practical guide, with participation by committee members from several academic societies in Japan. The practical guide including diagnostic criteria for PCD was approved by the Japanese Rhinologic Society, Japanese Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Japanese Respiratory Society, and Japanese Society of Pediatric Pulmonology., Results: The diagnostic criteria for PCD consist of six clinical features, six laboratory findings, differential diagnosis, and genetic testing. The diagnosis of PCD is categorized as definite, probable, or possible PCD based on a combination of the four items above. Diagnosis of definite PCD requires exclusion of cystic fibrosis and primary immunodeficiency, at least one of the six clinical features, and a positive result for at least one of the following: (1) Class 1 defect on electron microscopy of cilia, (2) pathogenic or likely pathogenic variants in a PCD-related gene, or (3) impairment of ciliary motility that can be repaired by correcting the causative gene variants in iPS cells established from the patient's peripheral blood cells., Conclusion: This practical guide provides clinicians with useful information for the diagnosis and management of PCD in Japan., (Copyright © 2024. Objective: Transoral surgery (TOS) is a widely used treatment for laryngopharyngeal cancer. There are some difficult cases of setting the extent of resection in TOS, particularly in setting the vertical margins. However, positive vertical margins require additional treatment. Further, excessive resection should be avoided as it increases the risk of bleeding as a postoperative complication and may lead to decreased quality of life, such as dysphagia. Considering these issues, determining the extent of resection in TOS is an important consideration. In this study, we investigated the possibility of accurately diagnosing the depth of laryngopharyngeal cancer using radiomics, an image analysis method based on artificial intelligence (AI)., Methods: We included esophagogastroduodenoscopic images of 95 lesions that were pathologically diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and treated with transoral surgery at our institution between August 2009 and April 2020. Of the 95 lesions, 54 were SCC in situ, and 41 were SCC. Radiomics analysis was performed on 95 upper gastrointestinal endoscopic NBI images of these lesions to evaluate their diagnostic performance for the presence of subepithelial invasion. The lesions in the endoscopic images were manually delineated, and the accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under the curve (AUC) were evaluated from the features obtained using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator analysis. In addition, the results were compared with the depth predictions made by skilled endoscopists., Results: In the Radiomics study, the average cross-validation was 0.833. The mean AUC for cross-validation calculated from the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.868. These results were equivalent to those of the diagnosis made by a skilled endoscopist., Conclusion: The diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal cancer depth using radiomics analysis has potential clinical applications. Objective: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), a novel coronavirus, causes coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Otologic surgeries with drilling by powered instruments induce significant aerosols, which may induce SARS-CoV-2 transmission to medical staff if SARS-CoV-2 exists in the middle ear and mastoid cavity. During a COVID-19 pandemic, therefore, confirming a negative COVID-19 test prior to otologic surgery is recommended. However, previous coronavirus studies demonstrated that coronavirus was detected in the middle ear in some patients even though the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test using their nasopharyngeal swab was negative. This study aimed to elucidate the probability of a positive SARS-CoV-2 PCR test in the middle ear or mastoid specimens from otologic surgery patients in whom SARS-CoV-2 was not detected by preoperative PCR test using a nasopharyngeal swab., Methods: We conducted a prospective, multicenter clinical study. Between April 2020 and December 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, 251 ears of the 228 participants who underwent otologic surgery were included in this study. All participants had no symptoms suggesting COVID-19 or close contact with a confirmed COVID-19 patient two weeks prior to the surgery. They were also negative in the SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests using a nasopharyngeal swab before surgery. We collected mucosa, granulation, bone dust with mucosa or fluid from the middle ear or mastoid for the SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests during each otologic surgery., Results: The median age of the participants at surgery was 31.5 years old. Mastoidectomy using a powered instrument was conducted in 180 of 251 otologic surgeries (71.8%). According to intraoperative findings, active inflammation in the middle ear or mastoid cavities was evident in 20 otologic surgeries (8.0%), while minor inflammation was observed in 77 (30.7%). All SARS-CoV-2 PCR tests of otologic specimens showed a negative result. No patient suffered from COVID-19 within two months after otologic surgery. Furthermore, no hospital-acquired infections associated with otologic surgery occurred in our institutions CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that PCR testing did not detect SARS-CoV-2 in middle ear and mastoid specimens, suggesting that the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is not high in otologic surgeries even using powered instruments when both clinical and laboratory tests are confirmed to be negative for COVID-19., (Copyright © 2022. Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) accounts for 1-2% of all malignant thyroid tumors. There are only a small number of patients with ATC and most of them die within 6 months after diagnosis, making it difficult to establish a standard treatment strategy. Although multimodal therapy, including radical surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, has been introduced, the survival rate remains poor. The use of molecular-targeted drugs for cancer therapy has become widely popular. Lenvatinib, a new molecular-targeted anticancer drug, is a multi-targeted receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). We report a rare case of a patient with ATC (T4N0M0) who responded extremely well to the administration of lenvatinib after radical surgery. The guidance deals with the recommended applications, procedures, and safety management of nebulizer therapy for acute rhinosinusitis. In Japan, nebulizer therapy for sinusitis has been covered by public health insurance since 1958 and has been commonly carried out nationwide. The Japan Society for Infection and Aerosol in Otorhinolaryngology and the Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Society of Japan set up a working group to draw up a consensus guidance on nebulizer therapy for acute rhinosinusitis. The device for nebulizer therapy are classified into jet, ultrasound, and mesh types. In Japan, cefmenoxime hydrochloride (CMX) was approved for use in nebulizer therapy since 1996. The widening of the obstructed lesions such as large polyps prior to nebulizer therapy were recommended. The numbers of times of nebulizer therapy is recommended for three times in a week for at least for 2 weeks (cure rate: 68%, eradication ratio: 48%). Concerns should be pay for the changes of activity of medicine due to the mixing and bacterial contamination. Pseudomonas cepacia growing in a short even in both saline and distilled water leads to contamination at high concentrations by 2 days. Nebulizer therapy is an effective treatment based on a drug delivery system (DDS) to the nasal and paranasal cavities. The therapy effectively increases the local drug concentration by promptly and uniformly delivering drugs to a targeted local site. CheckMate 141, an open-label, randomized phase III trial of nivolumab, indicated that treatment with nivolumab prolonged overall survival of patients with platinum-refractory, recurrent head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Herein, we describe a case of brain metastasis of parotid carcinoma in which a good response was achieved after nivolumab treatment. The patient was a 67-year-old woman with parotid carcinoma (cT4bN0M0) who received induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiation. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging performed 10 weeks after the primary treatment revealed a residual tumor and brain and lung metastases. Thereafter, chemotherapy comprising cisplatin, 5-FU, and cetuximab was performed. Unfortunately, the tumor volume increased 5 months after chemotherapy, after which she received immunotherapy with biweekly nivolumab. After six cycles of nivolumab administration, the brain and lung metastases shrank markedly. Nivolumab had an intracranial effect in the patient with brain metastases of parotid carcinoma. Objective: It remains controversial whether nasal nitric oxide (NO) serves as a reliable parameter to evaluate treatment efficacy in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR). The measurement of local nasal NO levels has been shown to be a sensitive marker for the diagnosis of symptomatic AR patients. Here we assessed the applicability of nasal NO to evaluations of the efficacy of intranasal steroids (INS) in a prospective design., Methods: We enrolled 25 patients with perennial AR and 10 age-matched healthy participants. The AR patients received fluticasone furoate (FF) once daily for 2 months. Fractional exhaled NO and nasal NO measurements were carried out using an electrochemical analyzer at pretreatment and at 2 weeks and 2 months after treatment. Nasal NO levels were directly measured at two different areas of the nasal cavity: the surface of the inferior turbinate (IT area) and the front of the middle meatus (MM area). Subjective nasal symptoms were also recorded at each visit., Results: The mean total nasal symptom score in the AR patients decreased significantly after FF treatment (p<0.0001). The mean nasal NO levels in the IT area in the AR patients were significantly higher at pretreatment than those of the healthy participants (109 vs. 62.5 ppb, respectively; p<0.001). After FF administration, the nasal NO levels in the IT area of the AR group showed a significant reduction at both 2 weeks and 2 months (79.1 and 71.9 ppb, respectively; p<0.05 and p<0.01). There was no significant difference in nasal NO levels in the MM area between the controls and the AR group at any visit timepoint. When the ratio of the MM area to the IT area (MM/IT ratio) was plotted for each subject, the untreated AR patients showed a marked decrease in the ratio, whereas after the FF treatment, the AR patients' mean MM/IT ratios showed a significant increase. Objective: This study investigated: (i) changes in the incidence of acute otitis media (AOM) following introduction of public funding for free inoculation with 7- and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV7 and PCV13, respectively) and (ii) changes in the rate of myringotomies for AOM (MyfA) in children 1year following the publication of the first edition of the clinical practice guidelines for the diagnosis and management of AOM in children in Japan., Methods: PCV7 was launched on the Japanese market in 2010 and gained public funding in 2011. PCV7 was replaced with PCV13 in November 2013. Using the Japan Medical Data Center Claims Database, an 11-year study conducted between January 2005 and December 2015 investigated the decline in the incidence of visits to medical institutions (VtMI) due to all-cause AOM in children <15years. The rate of MyfA from January 2007 to December 2015was also investigated and changes before and after introduction of public funding for PCV7 (pfPCV7) and PCV13 (pfPCV13) for children were examined. Statistical data for the age group between 10 years and <15years served as the control. An analysis was conducted to examine changes for each age group, from infants that had received PCVs to children <5years. Statistical analysis was performed using the chi-square test and Ryan's multiple comparison tests. Ryan's multiple comparison tests were applied at a 5% level of significance. Due to significant changes in the guidelines on the indications for myringotomy introduced in 2013, statistical analysis of the rate of MyfA was limited to the pre- and post-PCV7 period., Results: After introduction of pfPCV7 and pfPCV13, no significant suppression of the incidence of VtMI was observed in any age group. There was a gradual decline in the rate of MyfA after 2011. Compared to the control group, significant differences in all age groups from infants to children <5years were observed (p<0.009, chi-square test). Within 2 years after the introduction of PCV7, a significant decline in the rate of MyfA was observed in 1- and 5-year-olds using Ryan's multiple comparison tests at a 5% level of significance., Conclusion: The preventative effect of PCVs on AOM was not established in this study. There was, however, a significant decline in the rate of MyfA among 1- and 5-year-olds. Taking into consideration past studies, PCV7 may play a role in preventing the aggravation of AOM in 1-year-olds. Extraskeletal osteosarcoma is a very rare tumor and accounts for 4-5% of all osteosarcomas. We describe a 47-year-old Japanese man who presented with a right parotid tumor. The patient underwent total resection with postoperative radiotherapy; however, the tumor recurred in the lung, whereupon he underwent chemotherapy and partial lung resection. After surgery, a hemorrhagic brain metastasis appeared; this tumor was extirpated to prevent bleeding into the brain, after which additional chemotherapy was administered. Nevertheless, the patient developed additional metastases and died 17 months after the total parotidectomy. This tumor was unique in that it arose in the parotid gland; this case provides an instructional example of an extremely rare manifestation of this type of tumor., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Objective: Patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) show augmented activity of nitric oxide (NO) metabolism, similar to those in bronchial asthma (BA). We hypothesized that measurements of nasal fractional exhaled NO (FeNO) could be used as an objective marker to detect the presence of AR. Our objective was to clarify the influence of nasal airflow resistance (NAR) on nasal FeNO levels through an exhalation maneuver in symptomatic AR patients. We also examined the diagnostic test validity of the mean nasal FeNO level for disease discrimination by means of a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis., Methods: Fifty-nine untreated perennial AR patients without BA and 60 healthy controls were enrolled in this retrospective cross-sectional study. The subjective symptoms were recorded and the disease severity was classified according to the Japanese guideline for AR. The oral and nasal FeNO measurements were carried out using a handheld electrochemical analyzer according to the ATS/ERS guidelines. NAR was measured using a rhinomanometer by the anterior method., Results: The patients in the moderate-to-most severe AR group showed significantly higher levels of oral FeNO compared to the controls. The AR patients in both the mild (n=25) and the moderate-to-most severe (n=34) groups showed significantly higher levels of nasal FeNO compared to the controls (44.1ppb, 54.5ppb, and 26.5ppb, respectively). There was no significant difference in total NAR between the AR patients and the controls. The results of our comparison of nasal FeNO and NAR values of the ipsilateral nasal cavity for each individual indicated no significant correlation between the two-paired parameters. The optimal cut-off point of the mean nasal FeNO level was calculated as 38.5ppb (with 71% sensitivity and 86% specificity) to discriminate the presence of AR., Conclusion: Nasal FeNO measurements can be an objective parameter for the diagnosis and classification of perennial AR in Japanese individuals. Objective: Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) appears to offer practical advantages for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). Based on a review of the scientific literature, we present recommendations as guiding principles to administer SLIT safely., Methods: Clinical questions concerning SLIT were prepared. Literature published between January 2003 and December 2012 was searched from PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Japana Centra Revuo Medicina. Qualified studies were analyzed and the results were evaluated, consolidated, and codified. We answered 17 clinical questions and, based on this, presented evidence-based recommendations., Results: Sublingual immunotherapy improved symptoms (e.g., quality of life [QOL]) and reduced medication scores in seasonal AR and perennial AR. Most SLIT-induced adverse effects were local oral reactions, although systemic adverse effects such as gastrointestinal symptoms, urticaria, and asthma are occasionally reported. There have been no reports of lethal anaphylactic reactions by SLIT. When SLIT is continued for 3-4 years, its effect persists long after discontinuation., Conclusion: A correct diagnosis of AR and sufficient informed consent from patients are required before initiating SLIT. Sublingual immunotherapy should be continued for 3 years or longer. Objective: In anticipation of the development of guidelines for antigen-specific subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT), we present recommendations that can serve as guiding principles based on a review of the scientific literature., Methods: Clinical questions (CQs) concerning SCIT were prepared. Literature searches for publications between January 1990 and February 2011 were performed in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Japana Centra Revuo Medicina Web version 4. Qualified studies were analyzed and the results were evaluated, consolidated, and codified., Results: We present answers for 13 CQs on the indications, methods, effectiveness and mechanisms of SCIT, with evidence-based recommendations., Conclusion: The guiding principles are intended to be applied to children (≤15 years old) and adults (≥16 years old) with allergic rhinitis (AR). Objective: Monitoring of fractional concentrations of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) has become a reliable marker of inflammation in human nose and paranasal sinuses. However, it is still unknown to what extent nasal NO levels contribute to the pathology of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). In the present study, we aimed to examine FeNO levels and the underlying mechanism of NO production and metabolism in patients with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) and non-ECRS., Methods: Thirty-three untreated ECRS patients, 16 non-ECRS patients, and 38 normal subjects were enrolled in this cross-sectional study of FeNO levels. Oral and nasal FeNO levels were measured before treatment using an electrochemical NO analyzer (NObreath(®)) with a nose adaptor. The mRNA expression of three nitric oxide synthase (NOS) isoforms, interleukin-5 (IL-5), and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) in the ethmoid sinus mucosa and nasal polyps were analyzed by real-time PCR. Immunohistological localization of inducible NOS (iNOS) and nitrotyrosine (NT), a marker for oxidized NO metabolites, was also examined., Results: ECRS patients showed significantly higher oral FeNO levels compared to non-ECRS patients and normal subjects (mean values, 47.6, 13.5, and 15.3ppb, respectively). Nasal FeNO levels of the non-ECRS patients (30.5ppb) were significantly lower than those of the ECRS patients (53.9ppb) and normal subjects (45.5ppb). Positive correlations existed between the blood eosinophil percentage and FeNO levels in ECRS patients. Histologically, ECRS patients showed higher eosinophil accumulation in the ethmoid mucosa than non-ECRS patients (103.1 vs. 16.3cells/HPF). Real-time PCR analysis showed significant upregulation of iNOS and IL-5 mRNA expression in the ethmoid mucosa of the ECRS patients compared to those of non-ECRS patients. Positive iNOS immunoreactivity was observed in ciliated epithelial cells, submucosal glands and associated inflammatory cells in both groups. NT immunoreactivity was detected in the epithelium and around inflammatory cells. Intense NT staining was co-localized with eosinophil accumulation and ECRS patients showed significantly higher rates of NT-positive cells than non-ECRS patients., Conclusion: A combination of oral and nasal FeNO measurement is a valid marker for the classification and definition of different CRS subtypes in Japan. Objective: Patients with eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) show a high percentage of eosinophilic infiltration in the paranasal sinus mucosa. It is well documented that topical steroids have a beneficial effect in ECRS with nasal polyposis. We investigated mucosal distribution and cellular localization of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) isoform expression in human paranasal sinuses in relation to the clinical characteristics of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis (ECRS) patients., Methods: Mucosal specimens were obtained from 20 sinusitis patients by endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Quantitative fluorescence immunohistochemical analysis was employed to examine the degree of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) isoform expression in sinus mucosa specimens. An RT-PCR procedure was performed to determine the relative quantities of mRNA for the human GRalpha and GRbeta genes., Results: Patients in the ECRS group showed significant increases in peripheral blood eosinophils as compared to the non-ECRS group (16.98% vs. 2.31%). Positive immunoreactivity of GRbeta expression was predominantly found to be positive in inflammatory cells. The absolute number of GRbeta-positive cells in the ECRS group was increased in comparison with that in the non-ECRS group. The difference was statistically significant both in the maxillary (179.7 cells/mm(2) vs. 82.5 cells/mm(2)) and ethmoid sinus (302.0 cells/mm(2) vs. 61.5 cells/mm(2)) mucosa. The GRbeta/GRalpha cell ratio in the ECRS group was elevated when compared with that in the non-ECRS group both in the maxillary and the ethmoid sinus mucosa, with the latter difference being significant., Conclusions: The presence of high peripheral eosinophilia indicates a high likelihood of ECRS disease. Our results support the association of GRbeta expression with ECRS. The expression of GRbeta immunoreactivity, an endogenous inhibitor of steroid action previously associated with steroid insensitivity, may be one of major contributing factors in ECRS., (Copyright (c) 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Objectives: Submucous resection of the inferior turbinate is one of the recommended methods to alleviate nasal symptoms in patients with severe allergic rhinitis patients in terms of postoperative results and preservation of nasal function. Posterior nasal neurectomy, recently developed by Kikawada, is a novel method to selectively cut the neural bundles out from the sphenopalatine foramen and to diminish the complaints of hypersecretion. This study was carried to examine the clinical effectiveness and changes in local cytokine levels of this combined surgical procedure., Methods: Twenty-three patients with severe perennial allergic rhinitis underwent submucous turbinectomy combined with posterior nasal neurectomy under general anesthesia. The patients' subjective nasal symptoms were examined at each visit. The levels of interleukin-5 (IL-5), eotaxin and regulated on activation, normal T cell expressed and secreted (RANTES) in nasal lavages were measured before and 6 month after surgery. Nasal mucosa of the inferior turbinate was also obtained for histopathological examination in some cases., Results: The mean symptom scores for sneeze, rhinorrhea, nasal obstruction, and total severity were all statistically decreased after surgery. Therapeutic effects continued to be apparent as long as 3 years after surgery. The mean levels of both IL-5 and eotaxin significantly decreased after surgery, but that of RANTES remained unchanged. Histopathological examination revealed that the number of inflammatory cells and nasal glands markedly reduced in lamina propria and the epithelial layer became covered with stratified columnar cells., Conclusion: Submucosal turbinectomy with posterior nasal neurectomy has remarkably improved subjective nasal symptoms in patients with severe allergic rhinitis on a long-term follow-up basis. The present study also demonstrates that the clinical effectiveness of the procedure is accompanied by decreases in local inflammatory cell infiltration and the related cytokine production.

Objective: Chronic sinusitis is characterized by persistent chronic inflammation of the sinus system and local expression and release of various cytokines, such as IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, TGF-beta and TNF-alpha are deeply involved in the pathogenesis of the disease. We hypothesized that not only the sinus mucosa-containing cells, such as epithelial cells and fibroblasts, but also osteoblasts, of which sinus bone structure consists, may contribute to this inflammatory network. This study evaluates the development and establishment of an osteoblasts culture system derived from human ethmoidal sinus as an initial step toward verifying this hypothesis., Methods: Ethmoidal sinus bone was obtained from patients at the time of sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis and outgrowth cell sheets were obtained according to the explant-outgrowth cell culture technique. In order to examine the specific characteristics of osteoblasts in the obtained cells, four major features of osteoblasts (collagen type I, osteocalcin synthesis, alkaline phosphatase activity and extracellular matrix mineralization ability) were investigated at the third passage of the culture and productions of TGF-beta 1, which modulate osteoblast proliferation and maturation in an autocrine fashion, in the cultured medium was also investigated in time of culture up to 20 days., Results: The cells obtained in our study clearly show collagen type I synthesis, osteocalcin synthesis, alkaline phosphatase activity and production of visible extracellular matrix mineralization. Production of TGF-beta 1 in the medium did not significantly different in time of culture up to 20 days., Conclusion: Our results, the first of their kind, indicate that osteoblast-like cells can be cultured from adult human ethmoidal sinus bones. It suggested that proliferation and maturation of the osteoblast were continuously modulated in an autocrine fashion by producing TGF-beta 1.
