Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos kuršininkų kalbos būdvardžių gramatinės ypatybės, kurios išryškėjo XX a. pabaigos pateikėjų kalboje, dėl to ankstesnių tyrėjų nebuvo pastebėtos. Remiantis paskutiniosios kalbėtojų kartos pavyzdžiais, surinktais daugiausia iš rišlia kalba dokumentuotų įrašų, akcentuojamas būdvardžių gramatinės sistemos irimo požymis ‒ giminės, skaičiaus ir linksnio kategorijų ikoniškumo praradimas. Galūnių redukcija, ankstesniųjų autorių pastebėta kaip fonologinis reiškinys, čia nagrinėjama ne tik iš fonologinės, bet ir iš morfosintaksinės pozicijos. Nustatyta, kad padažnėję būdvardžių nederinimo su valdikliu atvejai susiję su predikatine būdvardžių funkcija. Baltų kalboms nebūdingos nederinamos ir neikoniškos formos laikytinos vokiečių kalbos gramatikos įtaka, kuri sustiprėjo per mokyklas su dėstomąja vokiečių kalba. The New Curonian (Kursenieki) language of the Curonian Spit, formed as a Baltic geolect in the 15th–17th centuries from the dialects of the colonists who came from Courland, is already considered dead but scientific research and its results are important for Baltic studies. They provide data on the substrate of the Old Curonian language in the dialects of Courland, help to arrange the regularities of the evolution of these dialects in chronological order, and furnish a lot of material on issues of language interaction and the process of language decline. The article introduces the hitherto unexplored changes in the grammatical system of the adjective of the Kursenieki language, which took place during the last century. The research uses audio recordings of fieldwork from 1961 to 2011; the data is analysed and compared with data recorded in written sources from the second half of the 19th century. The methods of comparative morphonology and partially functional grammar aim to establish whether changes in the grammatical system of the adjective are a result of the internal evolution of the Kursenieki language or a result of language interaction. The Baltic languages are inflectional, and the strongly progressive reduction of vowels in final syllables in the Kursenieki geolect affected primarily the endings of words, as a result of which their iconicity in the inflectional system has greatly faded. After examining the material of several generations of informants the following became clear: 1. The grammatical categories of gender, number and case of the adjective in the Kursenieki language maintained a stable system until the Bismarck school reform, i.e. until the introduction of German as the language of instruction and the Germanization of all areas of social life. In the second half of the 19th century, the material of the so-called Wenker phrases testifies not only to the still well-preserved endings of the Kursenieki language but also to the semantically and formally justified grammatical agreement of adjectives to the agreement controller. 2. In the language of the last generation of the speakers of the Kursenieki language, the gender, number and case form of adjectives often do not agree with the agreement controller. This tendency is most evident when the adjective performs the function of a predicate. In the speech of some informants, such forms make up almost half of the cases of the usage of predicate adjectives. 3. The far-advanced reduction of endings is a favourable medium for the penetrating influence of German grammar: in compound predicates, the parts of speech that perform the function of the agreement target lose their iconicity and syntactic semantics is controlled by other means (word order, prepositional constructions). This tendency is most prevalent in compound predicative constructions with 'būt/tapt' + adj. (+ nom.) and 'būt' + adv. And vice versa: the influence of German grammar, especially syntax, accelerated the decline of the functions of the inflections of the Kursenieki language and their even faster reduction. 4. The influence of German grammar on the system of the adjective and adjectival adverbs manifests itself in three ways: 1) the generalized use of a stem without inflection indicators in masculine gender N. pl. and feminine gender N. sg.; 2) a systematic reduction of adverbial forms of adjectival origin; 3) generalized masculine gender even where it does not fit semantically (when it is easily seen from the context that the subject is of feminine gender). 5. Since in all the three cases mentioned partially iconic forms are also used parallelly, the above-mentioned changes in the grammar of the Kursenieki language can be considered relatively recent and are typical of the 20th-century generation of speakers who attended German schools and lived under conditions of intense bilingualism. Straipsnio tyrimo objektas – dabartinių baltų kalbų nosiniai sonantai: lūpiniai (lie. /m/, /mj / ir la. /m/), dantiniai (lie. /n/, /nj / ir la. /n/) bei palatalinis la. /ɲ/, taip pat abiejų kalbų fonemos /n/ gomurinis alofonas [ŋ], ištartas pozicijoje [–k#/–g#]. Straipsnyje lyginamos keturios akustinės lietuvių ir latvių nosinių sonantų ypatybės: 1) pirmoji nosinė formantė (N1); 2) pirmosios nosinės formantės dažnių juosta (B1); 3) antiformantės (Z1) dažnių diapazonas; 4) F2 lokusai. Tiriamąją medžiagą įskaitė 3 gimtakalbiai lietuviai ir 3 gimtakalbiai latviai vyrai (20–40 m. amžiaus). Tyrimas atliktas programa Praat, gauti duomenys apdoroti programomis Microsoft Excel ir SPSS. Lietuvių ir latvių kalbų sonantai analizuoti prevokalinėje CVC pozicijoje atsižvelgiant į du kriterijus: 1) artikuliacijos vietą; 2) palatalizaciją (nepalatalizuotas : palatalizuotas : palatalinis nosinis sonantas). Tyrimo metu nustatyta, kad minėtos akustinės nosinių sonantų ypatybės dabartinių baltų kalbų garsyne yra skirtingo diferencinio svorio: 1) pirmosios nosinės formantės (N1) duomenys atskiria gomurinius alofonus [ŋ, ŋj ] nuo negomurinių nosinių sonantų [m, mj , n, nj ]; 2) pagal pirmosios nosinės formantės juostos pločio (B1) duomenis statistiškai reikšmingai skiriasi lietuvių kalbos palatalizuoti ir dantiniai nosiniai sonantai nuo nepalatalizuotų lūpinių ir gomurinių sonantų, taip pat latvių kalbos lūpiniai ir dantiniai sonantai nuo palatalinių ir gomurinių nosinių sonantų; 3) pagal antiformančių (Z1) dažnius galima diferencijuoti lietuvių kalbos lūpinius negomurinius sonantus [m, mʲ, n, nʲ] nuo atitinkamų gomurinių sonantų [ŋ, ŋʲ]; latvių kalboje pagal antiformantę galima atskirti skirtingos artikuliacijos nosinius sonantus: lūpinis [m]

Straipsniu siekiama aptarti subjunktyvo (taip pat vadinamo optatyvu ar kondicionaliu) diachroniją rytų baltų – lietuvių ir latvių – kalbose. Straipsnyje parodoma, kaip abiejų kalbų – ypač senosios lietuvių, senosios latvių bei dabartinės lietuvių kalbos tarmių – subjunktyvo paradigmos atspindi pirmines konstrukcijas, paremtas infinitinėmis veiksmažodžio formomis: supynu (pvz., lie. dúo-tų, la. duô-tu, plg. pr. dā-tun, s. sl. da-tŭ ) ir bendratimi (pvz., lie. dúo-ti, la. duô-t, plg. pr. dā-t, s. sl. da-ti). Sistemiškai palyginus baltų ir slavų kalbų duomenis, matyti, kad dauguma lietuvių ir latvių subjunktyvo paradigmos formų yra kilusios iš dviejų rytų baltų prokalbės konstrukcijų, kurių abi susidėjo iš atitinkamo veiksmažodžio supyno ir jungties (liet. būti, la. bût) formų: (a) supynas susiliejo su jungties esamojo laiko formomis, (b) supynas susiliejo su jungties būtojo laiko formomis. Viena reikšminga išimtis – lietuvių kalbos heteroklitinė 1 sg. forma, kilusi iš tos pačios konstrukcijos kaip ir latvių debityvas. Likusi straipsnio dalis skiriama antrinių subjunktyvo formų atsiradimui dabartinėse lietuvių tarmėse (ypač aukštaičių šnektoms pietų ir rytų Lietuvoje). Nagrinėjama, kiek šios formos atspindi reguliarių diachroninių procesų – (proporcinės) analogijos ir garsų kitimo – sąveiką. Pristatomos išvados yra svarbios bendrai abiejų rytų baltų kalbų morfologijos ir fonologijos priešistorei. This article intends to shed light on the diachrony of the subjunctive mood (also labelled optative or conditional) in the two East Baltic languages Latvian and Lithuanian. It is demonstrated to what extent the subjunctive paradigms in both languages – especially Old Lithuanian, Old Latvian and modern Lithuanian dialects – reflect original source constructions based on infinitival verb-formations, namely the supine (e. g. Lith dúo-tų, Latv duô-tu, cf. Old Prussian dā-tun, OCS da-tŭ) and the infinitive (e. g. Lith dúo-ti, Latv duô-t, cf. OPr dā-t, OCS da-ti). The systematic comparison of Baltic and Slavic evidence indicates that most forms of the Lithuanian and Latvian subjunctive paradigms go back to two Proto-East-Baltic source constructions that both contained the supine of a respective verb and forms of the copula (Lith būti, Latv bût): (a) the supine joined with present tense forms of the copula, and (b) the supine joined with past tense forms of the copula. One remarkable exception is a heteroclitic 1sg. form in Lithuanian that is shown to share a common source construction with the Latvian debitive. The remainder of the article is dedicated to the emergence of secondary subjunctive forms in modern Lithuanian dialects (especially Aukštaitian dialects in the South and East of Lithuania). It is discussed to what extent these forms reflect the interplay of regular diachronic processes, namely (proportional) analogy and sound change. The findings presented in the discussion have interesting implications for the common morphological and phonological prehistory of both East Baltic languages. Straipsnio tikslas – pristatyti lotynų 5 linksniuotės ir baltų kalbų -ē- kamienų lyginimo istorijos apžvalgą bei nuspręsti, ar abu šie dariniai gali būti kilę iš bendro indoeuropietiško šaltinio. Teigiama, kad *-eh1- vardažodžių kamienai prokalbėje neegzistavę, o tiek baltų -ē- kamienas, tiek lotynų penktoji linksniuotė laikytini kitų ide. darinių antrinės raidos rezultatu. The purpose of this article is to present the history of the comparison made by scholars between the Latin fifth declension and the Baltic -ē-stems and to decide whether both of those formations could go back to a common Indo-European source. It is claimed that the *-eh1- nominal stems did not exist as such in the proto-language and that both the Baltic -ē-stems and the Latin fifth declension are secondary developments of other Indo-European formations.

Lie. rìsti, rìta (la. rist, ritu), riẽsti, riẽčia (la. rìest, rìešu) ir sl. *‑rě̋sti, *‑rę̋t(j)ǫ, *‑rě̋tъ „rasti“ kildinami iš ide. šaknies *ret- „risti“ (plg. s. air. rethid „bėga“; lie. rãtas, s. v. a. rad, lo. rota ir kt. „ratas“). Ide. prokalbei galima rekonstruoti Narten prezensą *rḗts‑ti/*rét‑ti, kuris baltų-slavų prokalbėje buvo tematizuotas į *rēt‑e/o‑ ir įgijo nulinio laipsnio aoristo-bendraties kamieną *t‑ >*irt‑ → *rit‑ (su metateze pagal prez. *rēt-). Sudėtingas morfologinis perdirbimas į prez. *rē‑n‑t‑()e/o- slavų prokalbėje priklausė nuo semantinės raidos „risti“ >„bėgti“ >„rasti“. Ankstyvojoje baltų prokalbėje neįprasta ablauto paradigma *rēt‑e/o- : *rit‑ buvo perdirbta į dėsningą *reit‑e/o- : *rit‑, kuri vėlyvesnėje baltų veiksmažodžio raidos stadijoje skilo į du pirminius veiksmažodžius *risti, *rita ir *reisti, *reita. Lith. rìsti, rìta “roll” (Latv. rist, ritu), riẽsti, riẽčia “bend” (la. rìest, rìešu) and Sl. *‑rě̋sti, *‑rę̋t(j)ǫ, *‑rě̋tъ “find” derive from the PIE root *ret- “roll” (cf. OIr. rethid “runs”; Lith. rãtas, OHG rad, Lat. rota etc. “wheel”). We can reconstruct a PIE Narten present *rḗts‑ti/*rét‑ti that in Balto-Slavic was thematized into *rēt‑e/o‑ and acquired a zero-grade aorist-infinitive stem *t‑ >*irt‑ → *rit‑ (with metathesis on analogy with pres. *rēt-). The complex rebuilding of the present stem in Sl. *rē‑n‑t‑()e/o- depended on the semantic development “roll” >“run” >“find”. In Baltic the unusual ablaut pattern *rēt‑e/o- : *rit‑ was rebuilt as regular *reit‑e/o- : *rit‑. At a later stage of the development of the Baltic verb it split into the two primary verbs *risti, *rita and *reisti, *reita.

Dažnai manoma, kad indoeuropiečių ablautas, vartojamas kaip submorfema kartu su kitomis morfemomis, laikui bėgant linksta išnykti atskirų indoeuropiečių kalbų istorijoje. Kita vertus, kai kurių mokslininkų manyta, kad ablautas dažnai būna toks produktyvus, kad skverbiasi į kategorijas, kurios pradžioje jo neturėjo. Literatūroje abi teorijos turi savo šalininkų, pirmoji – Mańczaką (1958), antroji - Kuryłowiczių (1947). Šiame straipsnyje, skiriamame prof. Wojciechui Smoczyńskiui, minėtoji diskusija aptariama iliustruojant ją baltų kalbų pavyzdžiais. It is often assumed that PIE ablaut, used as a sub-morpheme accompanying other morphemes, tends to recede over time in the history of the individual Indo-European languages. On the other hand, it has been argued by some scholars that ablaut is often productive enough to expand over categories that did not have it originally. Both positions were advocated in the literature, the former by Mańczak (1958), the latter by Kuryłowicz (1947). In this paper, dedicated to Prof. Wojciech Smoczyński, this debate is discussed and illustrated by Baltic examples.

Straipsnyje pristatomas tekstynų medžiaga paremtas lietuvių ir latvių kalbų skaitvardžių vartojimo dažnumo tyrimas. Surinkta medžiaga rodo šiuos požymius: a) didelis mažiausius skaičius įvardijančių skaitvardžių dažnumas; b) bendra dažnumo mažėjimo tendencija kiekvienos serijos (vienetų, dešimčių ir t. t.) elementų eilėje nuo pirmo iki paskutinio; c) dažnumo viršūnės dažnai atitinka svarbias struktūrines pozicijas sistemoje. Kartu su kitų kalbų duomenimis šie požymiai patvirtina, kad kalbos vartotojų universalūs kognityviniai gebėjimai ir jų ribotumas atlieka svarbų vaidmenį skaitvardžių dažnumo distribucijos struktūroje. Tuo pačiu metu kultūriniai faktoriai yra taip pat įtraukti į skaičių konceptų kognityvinės hierarchijos kūrimo procesą. Straipsnyje siūloma skirti įgimtą (kognityvinį) ir neįgimtą (lingvistinį ir kultūrinį) iškilumą. Pastarasis yra atsakingas už referencinių skaičių identifikaciją – taip suteikiama daugiau patikimumo iš dalies reliatyvistinei hipotezei, kad kalbos sistema daro įtaką kalbėtojų mentalinio žemėlapio formavimui skaičių kognityvinėje srityje. This work consists of a corpus-based study on the frequency of the use of numerals in Lithuanian and Latvian. The collected data display the following features: a) the high frequency of the lowest numerals; b) a generally decreasing trend from the first to the last element of each series (units, tens, etc.); c) peaks of frequency often corresponding to important structural positions in the system. In line with the data available for other languages, these features seem to confirm that the universal cognitive abilities and limitations of the speakers play a major role in structuring the frequency of the use of numerals. At the same time, cultural factors are also involved in the process of creating a cognitive hierarchy among number concepts. I suggest distinguishing between innate (cognitive) and non-innate (linguistic and cultural) saliency. The latter is responsible for the identification of reference numbers, thus giving greater credence to the partially relativistic hypothesis that the linguistic system influences the mental mapping of the speakers in the cognitive domain of numbers.

Straipsnyje aprašoma semantinių talpyklos ir atramos kategorijų raiška lietuvių, latvių ir estų kalbose. Kalbos vartojamos tame pačiame areale, bet tik dvi pirmosios yra genetiškai susijusios. Tiriamųjų kalbų duomenys yra gauti atlikus eksperimentą (produkcijos užduotis, 60 kiekvienos kalbos dalyvių), kurio metu dalyviai turėjo aprašyti objektų padėtį nuotraukose, vaizduojančiose pagrindinius talpyklos ir atramos potipius. Talpyklos kategoriją sudarė pilno talpinimo, dalinio talpinimo ir sukibimo subkategorijos, o atramos – horizontalios atramos, prilipimo, kabėjimo ir apjuosimo su sąlyčiu subkategorijos. Rezultatai rodo, kad geriausiai talpyklos ir atramos kategorijas reprezentuoja pilnas talpinimas ir horizontali atrama – pastariesiems potipiams apibūdinti pasitelkiama mažiausiai kalbinių priemonių, jos neįvairuoja, o kitiems potipiams būdingas raiškos heterogeniškumas. Palyginus visų trijų kalbų duomenis matyti, kad baltų kalbos talpyklą vardija labai panašiai, o atramos raiškos priemonės artimesnės latvių ir estų kalbose. Tyrimas suteikia papildomų duomenų apie semantinius baltų kalbų skirtumus ir išryškina latvių kalbos ypatybes, atsiradusias dėl kontaktų su estų kalba. This paper aims to describe how spatial semantic categories of containment and support are expressed in three languages, – Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian, – which are spoken in the same area, though only the first two of them are genealogically related. Our research is based on a production task (n = 60 for each language) consisting of answers to picture stimuli representing major subtypes of containment and support: full containment, partial containment and interlocking for containment and support-from-below, adhesion, hanging and encirclement with contact for support. The results show that the core types of containment and support, namely, full-containment and support-from-below, are expressed most homogenously and using least terms in all three languages, but other sub-types trigger more variety. Cross-linguistically, containment is expressed similarly in the Baltic languages, but in terms of conceptualization and expression of support, Latvian and Estonian share more commonalities. This provides new evidence for semantic diversity of the Baltic languages and language-contact induced peculiarities of Latvian.

Straipsnyje aptariama ide. garsų junginių *-eum ir *-eh2m raida. Pirmasis jų virto *-ēm, spėjant, kad *-u- išnykdamas kompensaciškai pailginęs prieš tai ėjusį *-e- („Stango dėsnis“), o *-eh2m virto *-ām dar prokalbėje („išplėstas Stango dėsnis“). Straipsnyje kruopščiai patikrinta abiem teiginiams pagrįsti paprastai pasitelkiama medžiaga, didžiausią dėmesį skiriant ā kamieno acc. sg. ir acc. pl. galūnėms indų-iranėnų bei baltų kalbose ir indoeuropiečių prokalbės žodžio ‘karvė’ paradigmai. Daroma išvada, kad „išplėstas Stango dėsnis“ nėra pagrįstas, o „Stango dėsnis“ taip pat greičiausiai nėra teisingas. Siūlomi alternatyvūs paliudytų formų aiškinimai. The article discusses the development of the Proto-Indo-European sequences *-eum and *-eh2m. The former produced *-ēm, allegedly through loss of *-u- with compensatory lengthening of the preceding *-e- (“Stang’s law”), while *-eh2m allegedly produced *-ām within the proto-language (“extended Stang’s law”). The evidence for both claims is scrutinized, with special emphasis on the acc.sg. and acc.pl. endings of the ā-stems in Indo-Iranian and Baltic and the Proto-Indo-European paradigm of the word for ‘cow’. It is concluded that “extended Stang’s law” cannot be maintained and that “Stang’s law” is probably inorrect, too. Alternative explanations for the attested forms are given.

Straipsnyje pirmą kartą lietuvių kalbos trankieji priebalsiai tiriami lokuso lygčių (locus equations) metodu, kuris akustinės fonetikos tyrimuose plačiai taikomas tiek balsių ir priebalsių koartikuliacijos lygiui nustatyti, tiek priebalsių artikuliacijos vietai tirti. Be to, tai pirmasis lyginamasis lietuvių ir latvių kalbų trankiųjų priebalsių tyrimas, atliktas pagal tą pačią metodiką. Straipsnyje pateikiama abiejų baltų kalbų priebalsių akustinė klasifikacija, sukurta remiantis universaliais Tarptautinės fonetikų asociacijos (TFA) sukurtais principais. Abiejų kalbų lokuso lygčių rezultatai lyginami pagal tris kriterijus: balsingumą, palatalizaciją ir artikuliacijos vietą.

Stango dėsnis yra dviprasmė sąvoka. Viena vertus, taip vadinamas kirčio atitraukimas iš neakūtinių ilgųjų balsių į prieš tai einantį skiemenį slavų kalbose. Kita vertus, taip vadinamas ir vedų dym ‘dangus’, gm ‘jautis, karvė’, gr. Ζῆν(α), βῶν raida iš *dieum, *gwoum. Stangas kildino ilgąjį balsį iš dvibalsio, einančio prieš tautosilabinį nosinį priebalsį. Be to ilgasis balsis gali būti aiškinamas ir pailgėjimu vienskiemeniame žodyje, vėliau iškritus *-u- prieš tautosilabinį nosinį priebalsį. There are two chronological layers of metatonical circumflex in monosyllables, viz. an early Balto-Slavic layer which is reflected e.g. in Lith. dė̃s, jõs, duõs and a recent Aukštaitian layer which is found e.g. in nom.pl. tiẽ, acc.pl. tuõs, inst.sg. tuõ. Leskien’s law was younger than the former but older than the latter. This analysis is not based on a comparison with Slavic or Indo-European but on the internal evidence of the East Baltic languages.The Baltic future represents two Indo-European paradigms, viz. an s‑present with accentual mobility between the suffix and the ending and an s‑aorist with fixed stress on the root and monosyllabic lengthening in the 2nd and 3rd sg. forms. Both of these formations have exact correspondences in the Old Irish subjunctive. They must have existed side by side in Proto-Baltic in view of Prussian teīks ‘make!’ beside postāsei ‘you will become’.The circumflex of Latvian sā̀ls and gùovs shows metatonical length as a result of monosyllabic lengthening. There is no evidence for a PIE phoneme *a in sā̀ls, zùoss and nãss, nor for the vowel *e in the PIE paradigm of gùovs, nor for a PIE paradigm with fixed stress in the case of gùovs, nãss and zvrs, nor for a generalization of the original nom.sg. instead of acc.sg. accentuation in sā̀ls and nãss.

The history of Indo-European studies shows that the reconstruction of the proto-language is likely to have a bias toward the languages on which it relies primarily. It has always been popular to explain the data of more recently attested languages from a reconstruction on the basis of the oldest known languages. As an offshoot of this methodology, there have been attempts to derive the attested data from a postulated system which is beyond what can be reconstructed by the comparative method, often under the assumption that the original system was more regular than what can actually be reconstructed. It is argued that this methodology is wrong and that reconstructions must always be bottom-up, never top-down.The postulation of an Indo-European gen.pl. ending *‑ōm has given rise to a whole series of additional hypotheses in order to account for the Italic, Celtic, Germanic and Balto-Slavic data. The reconstruction of a short ending *‑om on the basis of Slavic ‑ъ, Lith. ‑ų and Prussian ‑on offers an explanation for the Gothic endings ‑e and ‑o, for the short endings of Celtic and Italic, for the circumflex of Greek ‑ῶν and the disyllabic ending *‑aHam of Indo-Iranian, and for the pronominal endings of Indo-Iranian and Italo-Celtic, all of which can be derived from old neuter forms in *‑om which were first used as possessives in predicative constructions.

The traditionally assumed intermediate Balto-Slavonic stage after the break up of Proto-Indo-European can be additionally supported by two highly specific and thus potentially exclusive developments at the end of a word. The first development is the loss of the PIE word-final short *i after a long vowel followed by a labial consonant. This sound change must have occurred later than the secondary shortening of long vowels before word-final PIE *m which is shared by Celtic. The second sound law is the raising of stressed PIE *o to *u in word-final position before consonants both in Baltic and Slavonic. The postulated sound changes are established by means of an in deep analysis of the relevant endings in the inflection of Baltic and Slavonic nouns, pronouns and adjectives.

Straipsnyje analizuojama baltų kalbų žodžių tvarkos diachroniniai aspektai. Tyrinėjant seniausius baltų kalbų raidos laikus, nustatyta, kad lietuvių ir latvių kalbose nuo seno vyrauja žodžių tvarkos tipas su priklausomojo nario antepozicija (DH). Vėlesnėje baltų kalbų raidoje išryškėjo polinkis apibendrinti ir įtvirtinti kai kuriuos modelius su pagrindinio nario antepozicija (HD). Pirmiausia baltų kalbose buvo apibendrinta prielinksnių antepozicija. Vėliau pagrindinio nario antepozicija įsivyravo skirtumo lyginamosiose konstrukcijose, kuriose aukštesniojo ir aukščiausiojo laipsnio būdvardžius imta atkelti prieš lyginimo standartą (CompSt). Naujausias pakitimas HD kryptimi yra sakinio dalių (S)VO tvarkos įsigalėjimas. Tas procesas tebevyksta lietuvių ir latvių rašytinės tradicijos laikotarpiu. Ši žodžių tvarkos kitimų eilė gali būti pavaizduota tokia schema: Praep – CompSt – (S)VO. Remiantis lietuvių ir latvių kalbų duomenimis, galima teigti, kad kalbose su sena variacine žodžių tvarka pozicinių modelių raidą lemia istoriniai kitimai mikrosintaksėje. Pagrindinio nario atkėlimą prieš priklausomąjį skatino ne tik konstrukcijų sintaksinė reanalizė, bet ir kalbų kontaktai. Sakinio dalių (S)VO modelis išplito dideliame Europos kalbų areale (slavų, germanų ir kt. kalbose), kurios taip pat anksčiau turėjo OV modelį. Vėliau SVO modelis įsitvirtino slavų kalbose, kurios darė įtaką ir lietuvių bei latvių kalbų sakinio dalių pozicijai. Įsigalėti sakinio dalių tvarkai su pagrindinio nario antepozicija turėjo įtakos ir pragmatinės sakinio skaidos ypatybės. Taigi baltų kalbų žodžių tvarkos raidos savitumą įtakojo sintaksiniai, arealiniai ir pragmatiniai faktoriai. This article analyses aspects of the word order of Baltic languages. The inherited word order type DH, in which the dependent is placed before the head, has been preserved up till now in most Lithuanian and Latvian word order patterns. A tendency to summarise and entrench some models with the HD type of word order showed up in the later development of Baltic languages. The early stage of HD order development in Baltic is represented by prepositional constructions. Later there was a prevalence of DH order both in the distribution of main sentence components (SOV) and in the comparative clauses (CompST). There is a new tendency to place the head before the dependent, which manifests itself in the expansion of the SVO sentence pattern and of comparative clauses with a postposed standard (CompSt) a process that is still going on in Lithuanian and Latvian. A relative chronology of expansion of some HD patterns in Baltic can be presented in the following sequence: Prep – CompSt – (S)VO. Based on data of Latvian and Lithuanian, one can affirm, that historical changes in the micro-syntax determine the development of the positional models with the old varied word order. Not only did a syntactical reanalysis of constructions encourage the movement ofthe head before the dependent, but also contacts with other languages. The (S)VO model spread in the large areal of European languages, which also earlier had an OV model. Later the SVO model entrenched itself in the Slavic languages, which had an impact on the position of parts of the sentence in Latvian and Lithuanian.

Straipsnyje siekiama atskleisti kai kurių iš pagrindinių mitologinių baltų-suomių epų herojų baltiškas šaknis. Analizuojama mitologinių personažų vardų kilmė. Panu (saulės sūnus), kuris yra vienas svarbiausių Kalevalos herojų, vardas kildintinas iš baltų *panu >prūsų panno ‘ugnis’. Salme (saulės dukra), tiksliai atitinka latvių Saules meita ir lietuvių Saulės duktė. Tapio (miško dievas) baltiškasis prototipas gali būti atpažįstamas prūsų toponime Tapio, kilusiame iš prūsiškos šaknies *tapja- ‘šiltas’, kuri neišlikusi kitose baltų kalbose. Ukko – aukščiausia dievybė suomių panteone, griaustinio ir oro dievas ir jo estiškasis kolega Uku, kuris taip pat užima aukščiausią vietą estiškoje dievų hierarchijoje, apibūdinami epitetais „aukštas“ ir „aukščiausias“, kurie leidžia atpažinti baltų superliatyvinį priešdėlį *uka- >prūsų ucka-, išreiškiantį aukščiausią daikto ar dalyko laipsnį, užkoduotą ir vyriausiojo prūsiškojo panteono dievo Occopirmus varde. Straipsnyje, remiantis šaltiniais, išnagrinėti keturi baltų-suomių epų teonimai, kurie atstovauja svarbiausiems mitologiniams personažams. Trimis atvejais iš keturių baltiškasis substratas perėjo tik į prūsų kalbą; remiantis šiuo faktu tiesioginį kontaktą istoriniame laike reikia atmesti. Kita vertus, vardų ir jų funkcijų bei motyvų perėmimas liudija intensyvius kontaktus ikiistoriniais laikais. The paper seeks to reveal the Baltic origin of the heroes of some of the main mythological Baltic-Finnish epics. The origin of the names of mythological characters is analysed. The name of Panu (the son of Sun), who is one of the main characters of “The Kalevala”, is supposed to have originated from Baltic *panu >Prussian panno [fire]. Salme (the daughter of Sun) corresponds to Latvian Saules meita and Lithuanian Saulės duktė [the daughter of Sun]. The Baltic prototype of Tapio (the god of woods) might be recognised in Prussian toponym Tapio, which originated from the Prussian root *tapja- [warm], which has not survived in other Baltic languages. Ukko – the highest deity in the Finnish pantheon, the god of thunder and air, and his Estonian counterpart Uku, who also occupies the top position in the Estonian hierarchy of gods, are described by epithets “tall” and “tallest” that allow identifying the Baltic superlative prefix *uka- >Prussian ucka-, denoting the highest degree, which is encoded in the name of Occopirmus, the supreme Prussian god. Based on sources, the paper analyses four theonyms from Baltic-Finnish epics, which represent the most important mythological characters. In three out of four cases the Baltic substratum moves only to the Prussian language, thus the direct contact in the historical time should be rejected. On the other hand, the transfer of names and their functions as well as motifs testify intensive contacts in prehistoric times.

Straipsnyje diskutuojama gramatinių skolinių baltų kalbose klausimu. Minimi šios temos bendri aspektai ir aptariami du vieninteliai kandidatai į baltų kalbų „materialius" skolinius iš finougrų kalbų: baltų kalbų iliatyvas bei inesyvas ir lietuvių kalbos imperatyvas. Parodoma, kad jie greičiau yra ne materialūs skoliniai, o sudaryti pagal finougrų modelį arba visai originalūs. The article discusses issue of grammatical loanwords in the Baltic languages. The general aspects of the topic are provided and two only candidates to the “substantial” loanwords from Finno-Ugric languages to the Baltic languages are discussed: illative and innesive in the Baltic languages and imperative in Lithuanian. The article demonstrates that these are probably not substantial loanwords but ones formed on the Finno-Ugric model or else completely original.

Šiuo metu vyrauja dvi pagrindinės teorijos apie ide. ilgųjų balsių raidą baltų ir slavų kalbose: i) pagal „tradicinę“ teoriją ilgųjų balsių refleksai turi akūtinę priegaidę, ii) pagal Kortlandto teoriją – cirkumfleksinę priegaidę. Straipsnyje ginama tradicinė teorija. Kortlandto teorija, ko gero, yra teisinga žodžio galo pozicijoje (plg. lie. akmuõ, duktė, vns. naud. -uĩ, dgs. įnag. -aĩs). Žodžio viduryje Kortlandto teoriją remia tik slavų sigmatinis aoristas s.-kr. dò-nijeh, rijeh ir turbūt la. sāls, gùovs (šiuo atveju veikiant gan problemiškam dėsniui *-ĒH- >*-Ē-). Kiti faktai, remiantys Kortlandto teoriją, yra abejotini dėl vienos ar kitos priežasties. Dalis Kortlandto medžiagos yra vienskiemenės paradigmos formos (pvz., lie. duõs, jūs, tuõ, la. gùovs, s.-kr. dâ, lî). Jas galima paaiškinti Rasmusseno teorija, pagal kurią bl.-sl. vienskiemeniai patyrė cirkumfleksinę metatoniją. Kita vertus, tradicinę teoriją remia tokie pavyzdžiai kaip sl. *sĕći / lie. pasėkelis, sl. -rěsti / la. ruõtât, sl. *bermę (: s. i. bhārman), *nyně (: s. i. nūnám), lie. núoma (: gr. νωμάω), la. siẽva šalia kitų atvejų. Taigi galima išvada, kad ide. ilgieji balsiai dėsningai gavo akūtinę priegaidę baltų ir slavų kalbose. Cirkumfleksinė priegaidė apsiriboja dviem specifinėmis pozicijomis: i) žodžio galas, ii) vienskiemenės žodžių formos. Currently there are two main theories concerning development of the long vowels in the Indo-European in the Baltic and Slavonic languages: i) under “traditional” theory, reflexes of long vowels have an acute intonation, ii) under Kortlandt theory, they bear a circumflex intonation. The article supports the traditional theory. Kortlandt theory is probably correct in the ending position (cf. lith. akmuõ, duktė (stone, daughter), sing. dat. -uĩ, plural instrumental -aĩs). In the middle of a word, Kortlandt theory is only supported by Slavonic sigmatic aorist s.-kr. dò-nijeh, rijeh and probably la. sāls, gùovs (in this case, a relatively difficult law comes into effect *-ĒH- >*-Ē-). Other facts supporting Kortlandt theory can be called into doubt for various reasons. Some of Kortlandt material is monosyllable paradigmatic forms (e.g., lith. duõs, jūs, tuõ (will give, you, by it), la. gùovs, s.-kr. dâ, lî). The same forms can be explained by Rasmussen theory, where bl.-sl. monosyllable words have undergone a circumflex metatony. On the other hand, the traditional theory is supported by examples as sl. *sĕći / lie. pasėkelis, sl. -rěsti / la. ruõtât, sl. *bermę (: s. i. bhārman), *nyně (: s. i. nūnám), lith. Núoma (rent) (: gr. νωμάω), la. siẽva, etc. One can therefore conclude that long vowels of Indo-European have regularly received an acute intonation in the Baltic and Slavonic languages. The circumflex intonation is therefore limited to 2 specific positions: i) word ending, ii) monosyllable word forms.

POLESIE: “ALONG THE FOREST“, „ALONG THE VALLEY“ OR „LAND OF GREAT SWAMPS“?SummaryPolesie is a territory inhabited by speakers of an Eastern Slavonic dialect called „Poleshuk“, stretching across southern Belarus, northern Ukraine, several neighboring western regions of Russia and part of the western headwaters of Poland’s section of the Pripet River.The Polesie region is extremely significant for the history of old contacts between Balts and Slavs, because of its linguistic peculiarities and archaeological monuments, which offer evidence that this could have been the zone where Balts and Slavs first met, the strongest traces of which were impressed in the local place names.The abundance of Baltic traces in the Polesie region calls for greater attention to the origin of the name Polesie itself.This article presents arguments casting doubt on the Slavic origin of the name: supposedly Polesie = Slav. (R.) po- + les- (по- + лес-) „along the forest“, from R. лес „forest“, cf. по-бережье „along the shore“, etc. Even those linguists who tend toward maintaining that the etymology is based on „forest“ try to connect Polesie with Baltic hydronyms such as Pala, Pelesa and others, which etymologically have nothing in common with the meaning „forest.“Based on appellative and onomastic constructions of the Baltic pal-/pel- root and borrowings of these in the Slavic languages, it is suggested that the proper name Polesie needs to be considered as part of the heritage of the Baltic substrate, a word whose „ancestors“ could have been either a hydronym with the affix -es- (e.g., Pelesa), or a geographic term meaning „large swamp“, cf. Lith. palà „marsh or morass, bog, swamp“, palios „large swamp in places where lakes have been overgrown, wasteland“, Latv. palas, paļas „marshy lake shore“ and others. Similar typological/semantic parallels exist in other regions, cf. Pannonia „historical Roman province in the area of the present-day lake Balaton“, whose title *Pannona is sought in the appellative meaning of „swamp, bog“ in the Illyrian language, cf. Baltic (Prussian) pannean „swamp“.A Baltic origin for Polesie is also strengthened by the fact that a large portion of the borrowings from the Baltic substrate in the various Eastern Slavonic languages are comprised of words for wet, low and swampy places, e.g.: alos, алес „swamp, marsh, quagmire“ (Polish, Belarusian, Russian, Ukrainian); kudra, кудра „forest in a swamp, small lake“ (Polish, Belarusian, Rus., Ukr.); pelka, пелька „swamp, depression“ (cf. Lith. pelkė „swamp“) (Polish, Belarusian, Rus., Ukr.); rojst(o), ройст(а) „swampy place, bog, fen“ (Polish, Belarusian, Rus.); твань/тваль „swampy place, quagmire“; R. пурвиж „peat­bog“, банда „an overgrown lake filled with crucian carp)“, лом(a)/(o) ламы́ „swamp, bog, fen, marshy meadow“, дребь/дреб „fen, swampy place overgrown with forest“ and so on.In light of the semantic/typological, etymological and areal features of the toponym Polesie there is strong basis to the claim that it is of Baltic origin and possibly meant „land of great swamps“, while the semantic connections with „forest“ arose later, following inhabitation of the land by the Eastern Slavic tribes and their adoption of the local Baltic toponyms.

Dalis baltų kalbų denominatyvinių veiksmažodžių priesagų yra kilusios iš daiktavardžių kamiengalių. Straipsnyje, siekiant ištirti priesagų darybiškėjimo procesą, nagrinėjami visi priesagų -ė-ti-, -y-ti, ir -uo-ti daiktavardiniai vediniai, aiškinamasi, kiek daiktavardžių kaitybos klasės dar koreliuoja su atitinkamomis denominatyvinių veiksmažodžių priesagomis. Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos daiktavardinių veiksmažodžių priesagos -ė-ti, -y-ti, -o-ti ir -uo-ti pagal sinchroninį ryšį su pamatinių daiktavardžių kaitybos klasėmis (atitinkamai ė, i, (i)o ir (i)a) skyla į dvi grupes: (a) silpnesnio ryšio (-ė-ti ir -y-ti); (b) stipresnio ryšio (-o-ti, -uo-ti). Ryšio stiprumas įvertintas pagal tai, kiek šių priesagų vedinių grupėse vyrauja tam tikrų kaitybos klasių pamatiniai daiktavardžiai: (b) grupėje toms kaitybos klasėms priklauso daugiau nei du trečdaliai vedinių, o (a) grupėje – nuo penktadalio iki trečdalio. Some Baltic denominative verb suffixes originated from noun stem endings. Seeking to investigate the process of suffixal formation, all substantival derivatives of suffixes -ė-ti, -y-ti and -uo-ti are examined, exploring to what extent noun inflection classes still correlate with respective suffixes of denominative verbs. The suffixes of substantival verbs of the modern Lithuanian language -ė-ti, -y-ti, -o-ti and -uo-ti fall into two groups according to the synchronous relationship with the inflection classes of underlying nouns (ė, i, (i)o and (i)a respectively fall into two groups: (a) weaker relationship (-ė-ti and -y-ti); (b) stronger relationship (-o-ti, -uo-ti). The strength of the relationship was evaluated according to the extent to which the underlying nouns of certain inflection classes prevail in the groups of these suffixal derivatives: more than two-thirds of derivatives belong to those inflection classes in group (b); from one-fifth to one-third in group (a). Group (a) suffixes -ė-ti and -y-ti are described as morphologically freer, whereas group (b) suffixes as more restrained, their distribution is more restricted and often depends on the underlying noun inflection class. Concerning morphological freedom, the function of suffixes from group (b) is more verbalised: if there is a need to use the noun of the inflection class (i)a and (i)o in the text as a verb, the suffix of the verb is partly predictable and depends on the inflection class of that noun: (i)a : -(i)uo-ti and (i)o : -(i)o-ti. Substantival verbs with the suffix -ė-ti, derived not from the regular (historical) class ė and having an easily predictable status change meaning, stand out.

DIE GEMEINSAMMEN OSTBALTISCHEN VERBEN DES TYPS gérti, gẽria, gė́rė – dzer̂t, dzer̦u, dzêru ZusammenfassungIn dem Artikel werden die Paare der Wurzelverben des Typs Cē̆r im Litauischen und Lettischen untersucht. Die gemeinsamen ostbaltischen Verben des Typs gérti werden von verschiedenen (semanti­schen, morphologischen, morphfonologischen u. a.) Standpunkten besprochen. Die Daten der beiden baltischen Sprachen und die Entsprechungen anderer verwandten Sprachen werden verglichen, mit dem Ziel, Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede festzustellen. Gleichzeitig versucht man die Formation des struk­turellen Typs selbst, die Bedingungen und Zeit seiner Bildung zu klären.Die meisten zur Analyse stehenden Verben weisen alte Wurzeln, Äquivalente in anderen verwandten Sprachen auf. Im Preußischen hat das verbale Wurzeläquivalent nur die ostbaltische Wurzel *u̯ē̆r- „öffnen": pr. etwēre „(du) öffnest“, etwerreis „öffne“. Andere Wörter haben Ableitungen in anderen verwandten Sprachen. Manche Wurzeln sind im Preußischen überhaupt nicht fixiert worden, z. Die Verzweigung der Bedeutungen ist auch sehr ähnlich.Alle besprochenen Verben sind vom Stanpunkt der morphologischen Struktur identisch. Im Präsens weisen sie ia-Stamm auf, doch die Entsprechungen der anderen Sprachen zeigen, dass diese Erscheinung nicht alt sein kann. Die Verben der zur Analyse stehenden Wurzeln können unter­schiedliche Struktur haben, doch der meist vorkommende Typ ist Präsensform ohne Formans. Höchstwahrscheinlich ist das die Innovation der ostbaltischen Sprachen.Die analysierten Verben zeigen in beiden baltischen Sprachen den Ablaut Cer : Cēr, doch sie stammen aus apophonischen Wurzeln des Typs Cer-/Cr̥-. Sie haben also die normale Ablautstufe mit der Vokalverlängerung im Präteritum generalisiert (die Schwundstufe haben die Wörter anderer struk­tureller Typen generalisiert).In den anderen Sprachen hat sich kein einheitlicher struktureller Typ gebildet, welcher wenigstens geringfügig den baltischen Cē̆r Verben ähnelt. Die Äquivalente sind sehr unterschiedlich hinsichtlich sowohl der morphologischen, als auch morphfonologischer Struktur. Die Generalisierung sowohl der ia-stämmigen Formen im Präsens, als auch der ē-stämmigen Formen im Präteritum ist wahrscheinlich mit der Verzweigung der Diatheseopposition verbunden.

Ankstesniame straipsnyje autorius yra kėlęs darbinę hipotezę, kad ide. (tranzityviniai-)aktyviniai prezensai ir aoristai vystėsi baltų-slavų prokalbėje tokiu būdu: i) ide. prezensai iš „prezenso šaknų“ įgijo naują nulinio laipsnio bendraties ir aoristo (ko gero, ā-aoristas) kamieną, ii) ide. šakniniai aoristai iš „aoristo šaknų“ buvo tęsiami kaip pamatinio laipsnio bendraties ir aoristo kamienai (žr. Villanueva Svensson 2011, 317tt.). Šiame straipsnyje tikrinama, ar ši hipotezė tinka baltų ir slavų kalbų pirminiams veiksmažodžiams iš ide. šaknų, kurios baigiasi *°eu-, *°eHu-, *°euH-. Rytų baltų kalbose įsitvirtino reguliarus tipas lie. bliáuti, bliáuja / bliáuna, blióvė, la. bļaût, bļaûju / bļaûnu, bļâvu, tačiau lietuvių ir latvių kalbose pasitaiko nemažai faktų, liudijančių ganėtinai sudėtingesnę priešistorę (pvz., lie. briáutis šalia bráutis, la. raût šalia pļaũt, lie. trm. būt. l. šãvo ir kt.). Slavų prokalbėje šių šaknų veiksmažodžiai vystėsi įvairiau negu (rytų) baltų kalbose, su kuriomis dažnai nesutampa (pvz., lie. bliáuti, bliáuja ~ sl. *bl’ьväti, *bljűjo, la. maût, maûju ~ sl. *myti, *myjo, plg. pr. aumūsnan). Straipsnyje analizuojami visi baltų ir slavų paveldėti pirminiai veiksmažodžiai, siekiant nustatyti tikslią jų rekonstrukciją baltų-slavų prokalbėje. Rezultatai iš esmės patvirtina keliamą hipotezę. In a previous article, the author tentatively proposed a hypothesis that PIE active root presents and aorists developed in the Balto-Slavic proto-language as follows: i) PIE presents from “present roots” acquired a new zero-grade infinitive and aorist (probably an “ā-aorist”) stem, ii) PIE root aorists from “aorist roots” were continued as fundamental-grade infinitive and aorist stems (see Villanueva Svensson 2011, 317tt.). In this article, the author tests whether this hypothesis holds for Baltic and Slavic primary verbs with PIE roots that end with *°eu-, *°eHu-, *°euH-. In East Baltic languages, a regular type has become established with the inflection: Lith. bliáuti, bliáuja / bliáuna, blióvė; Latv. bļaût, bļaûju / bļaûnu, bļâvu, yet there is considerable evidence in the Lithuanian and Latvian languages suggesting a more complex prehistory (e.g. Lith. briáutis beside bráutis; Latv. raût beside pļaũt, Lith. trm. būt. l. šãvo, etc.). In the Slavic proto-language, verbs with these roots developed more diversely than in (East) Baltic languages, with which there are deviations (e.g. Lith. bliáuti, bliáuja ~; Sl. *bl’ьväti, *bljűjo, Latv. maût, maûju ~ Sl. *myti, *myjo, plg. pr. aumūsnan). The article analyses all of the primary verbs inherited by the Balts and the Slavs in an effort to determine their exact reconstruction in the Balto-Slavic proto-language. The results broadly confirm the proposed hypothesis.

EASTERN BALTIC CiR TYPE VERBSSummaryThis article analyzes CiR type verbs in the Eastern Baltic languages and attempts to explain their origin and evolution. The criterion for inclusion as a subject for investigation – the root structure – allows for the discovery of general patterns in the history of verbs of the given structural type and the development of these verbs in the separate Baltic languages, and can provide a better definition of archaic features and innovations, because the root structure is closely related to the morphological structure and categorial semantics (especially in the Lithuanian language).According to various sources, there are approximately 30 CiR type verbs common to the Eastern Baltic languages (there are more in the Lithuanian language).In regard to morphological structure these are rather varied: a-stem, ia-stem, infix and sta-stem (the morphological structure also depends on the root final element: Cin are a-stem, Cir, Cil ia-stem or sto-stem, Cim are sta-stem).l. The largest group consists of infix and sta-stem verbs (15).1.1. The majority of these form diathetic pairs with ia-stem verbs (10). The categorial semantics of infix and sta-stem verbs – the mutative meaning – is opposed to the causative meaning of ia-stem verbs, e.g. Lith. bẽria / bỹra : Latv. ber̦u / bir̃stu. This opposition has not been documented in the Old Prussian language.1.2. Several of the verbs preserve Indo-European roots (5), but differ in morphological structure, these being infix and sta-stems or crossovers from a-stems, e.g.: Lith. mìršta : Latv. mir̃stu, Lith. gìmsta // gẽma : Latv. dzìmstu // dzemu.2. Only half as many ia-stem CiR type verbs have been discovered (7), e.g. Lith. skìria – skýrė : Latv. šķir̦u – šķîru.3. Eight Eastern Baltic a-stem verbs have CiR type roots.3.1. Mostly a-stem verbs with quantitative vowel changes were identified (6). In the Latvian language the preterite may occur without vowel lengthening; moreover, some of the Latvian verbs have parallel ia-stem forms in the dialects. All express active action, cf. Lith. trìna – trýnė : Latvian trinu // trin̦u – trinu // trînu ‘to sharpen or grind (a blade), to rub or grate’ : OPr. trinie.3.2. Two of the a-stem verbs have qualitative vowel gradation (there are more vestigial apophonic paradigms in the dialects): Lith. vérda // vìra // vera – vìrė : Latv. vę̂rd – vira, Lith. gẽna – gìnė : Latv. dzęnu – dzinu. These several archaic paradigms are at the early stage, from which new structural models began to develop in the Eastern Baltic languages. The dialect present tense base forms of the Eastern Baltic languages demonstrate that this type was much more plentiful previously, cf. Lith. dẽla – dìlo, Latv. dęl; Lith. svẽla; Latv. svęl; Lith. gẽma, Latv. dzęmu. These bear witness to former paradigms with qualitative vowel gradation; later in both of the Baltic languages the vocalism was generalized for the entire paradigm. Multiple lines of development can be seen: 1) most frequently the appearance of binary oppositions: Lith. kẽlia / kỹla // kìlsta : Latv. ceļu / cilstu – diathetic opposition with differentiated categorial semantics, morphological structure and vocalism; 2) more rarely ternary oppositions develop: Lith. skẽlia I skìlia / skỹla : Latv. šķeļu / šķiļu; 3) zero-grade roots are generalized and acquire either a, ia-stem or infix or sta-stem structure, depending on the categorial semantics (and the root-final sonant), cf. Lith. trìna – trýnė : Latv. trinu // trin̦u – trinu // trînu ‘to sharpen or grind (a blade), to rub or grate’; Lith. gìria – gýrė : Latv. dzir̦u – dzĩru or Lith. gìmsta – gìmė, Latv. dzìmstu – dzimu. Thus new structural models of the Eastern Baltic verbs developed.Evolution, origin.1. The processes discussed should be considered an Eastern Baltic innovation, because the Old Prussian language doesn’t show this sort of differentiation of lexemes. The Baltic inheritance is not great, just a few verbs common to all the Baltic languages. The interpretation of Old Prussian vocalism is very often problematic – root vowel gradation can be perceived or not – but it’s probable that verbal oppositions with differentiated vocalism, morphological structure and categorial semantics did not occur, compare OPr. lemlai – limāts ‘broke’, which might have had vowel gradation.Moreover, there are further differences between the verbs of the three Baltic languages and between the Eastern Baltic languages, cf. the recently created Lith. gìna – gýnė with another kind of root in OPr. guntwei, gunnimai, Latv. dzęnu – dzinu. The innovations in the different languages are obvious. In this regard the expansion of the causativa / resultativa opposition in Lithuanian is distinctive, e.g. gẽria / gìrsta, svẽria / svỹra, and pairs differentiating the limits of action have also been created, such as gẽlia / gýla, vẽmia / -vìmsta.2. Baltic verbs usually preserve Indo-European CeR-/CR̥- type roots, from which verbs denoting oppositions developed in the Eastern Baltic languages, or the zero-grade was generalized. Correspondences in the Indo-European languages are varied in terms of morphology, vocalism and semantics. There are various transformations in the different languages or branches: one set of languages develops to a great degree inflectional vowel gradation or modifies it in individual ways, while another set of languages generalizes one or another vowel grade. In any case, it is clear that apophonic lexemes were not differentiated, i.e. vowel gradation was not used to create separate lexemes.Thus the apophonic verbal paradigms of the Eastern Baits have been remodeled in an original way, by an intimate linking of morphology, root structure and categorial semantics.

Die gemeinsamen ostbaltischen Verben des Typs kélti werden von verschiedenen (seman­tischen, morphologischen, morphfonologischen u.a.) Standpunkten besprochen. Die Daten der beiden baltischen Sprachen und die Entsprechungen anderer verwandten Sprachen werden verglichen, mit dem Ziel, Ähnlichkeiten und Unterschiede festzustellen. Gleichzeitig versucht man die Formation des strukturellen Typs selbst, die Bedingungen und Zeit seiner Bildung zu klären.Obwohl alle zur Analyse stehenden Verben aus alten Verbalwurzeln stammen, haben aber nicht alle Verben Äquivalente in anderen verwandten Sprachen.Im Preußischen kann man nur eine Verbalwurzel rekonstruieren (pr. *gul-), das verbale Wurzeläquivalent die ostbaltische Wurzel *gel-/*gil- ‘gelti’, ‘skaudėti’. Die meisten Verben haben im Preussischen nur verwandte Ableitungen. Man­che Bedeutungsveränderungen gelten nicht nur für baltische, sondern auch für andere verwandte Sprachen.Alle besprochenen Verben sind vom Stanpunkt der morphologischen Struktur sehr ähnlich: im Präsens weisen sie fast immer den ia-Stamm und im Präteritum den ē-Stamm auf. Aber in den Mundarten ist die gewisse Variation der morphologischen Struktur möglich. Obwohl die Paralellformen der Mundarten nicht immer zuverlässig sind, kommen sie jedoch vor. Dadurch unterscheiden sich die Verben des Typus kélti von denen des Typus gérti, welche diese Paralellformen überhaupt nicht haben.Die Verbalentsprechungen in den anderen Sprachen weisen sehr unterschiedliche morphologische Struktur auf. Da kommen auch die Entsprechungen mit dem Präsensformans i vor, aber sie bilden keine einheitliche Strukturgruppe. Ausserdem gibt es in den anderen Sprachen Entsprechungen mit dem Nullformans oder anderen Formanten. Deshalb ist die uniffizierte morphologische Struktur als Inovation der baltischen Sprachen zu betrachten.Die analysierten Verben zeigen in beiden baltischen Sprachen den Ablaut *Cel : *Cēl, doch sie stammen aus apophonischen Wurzeln des Typs *Cel-/*Cl̥-. Sie haben also die normale Ablautstufe mit der Vokalverlängerung im Präteritum generalisiert (die Schwundstufe haben die Wörter anderer struktureller Typen generalisiert).In den anderen Sprachen hat sich kein einheitlicher struktureller Typ gebildet, welcher wenigstens geringfügig den baltischen *Cē̆r Verben ähnelt. Die Äquivalente sind sehr unterschiedlich hinsichtlich sowohl der morphologischen, als auch morphfonologischer Struktur. Die Generalisierung sowohl der ia-stämmigen Formen im Präsens, als auch der ē-stammigen Formen im Präteritum ist wahrscheinlich mit der Verzweigung der Diatheseopposition verbunden.

ON THE GRAMMATICAL STATUS OF LITH. abu, LATV. abi, OPR. abbaiSummaryThe article deals with the grammatical status of Lith. abu ‘both’, Latv. abi and OPr. abbai. In the Baltic literature, these words are traditionally referred to as numerals. However, the said words and the numerals – Lith. du ‘two’, Latv. divi, OPr. dwai – have different lexical meanings. The presupposition of the utterances with Lith. du, Latv. divi, OPr. dwai and Lith. abu, Latv. abi, OPr. abbai does not lead to the assumption that Lith. abu, Latv. abi and OPr. abbai are numerals. Cf. Jonas atsivežė du sūnus (‘John has brought two sons’) and Jonas atsivežė abu sūnus (‘John has brought both sons’). The first utterance implies that John may have even more sons (but he has brought only two), whereas the second utterance indicates that John does not have more sons (and he has brought all of them). The meaning of Lith. abu, Latv. abi, OPr. abbai suggests that the latter words should be considered pronouns. Moreover, these words function as pronouns in the structure of the text, too; the Lith. numeral du, Latv. divi, OPr. dwai usually occur in the focus, whereas the Lith. pronoun abu, Latv. abi, OPr. abbai occur in anaphoric structures. The contextual partners of the Lith. pronoun abu and the Latv. pronoun abi are always nouns which mean ‘forming a pair’ or ‘having two sides’: ãkys (‘eyes’), rañkos (‘hands’), aũsys (‘ears’), etc., (Latv. acis, rokas, ausis); kẽlias (‘road’), gãtvė (‘street’), tãkas (‘path’), geležìnkelis (‘railway’), ežià (‘boundary’), ùpė (‘river’), griovỹs (‘ditch’), kanãlas (‘canal’), pýlimas (‘dyke’), síena (‘wallֹ’), etc., (Latv. ceļš, iela, taka, dzelzceļš, eža, upe, grāvis, kanāls, dambis, valnis, robeža, siena). Lith. abu, abi and the Latv. dialect forms obu, obi are reflections of the pronominal dual inherited from Proto-Indo-European.

Prūsų kalbos 25 žuvų pavadinimų etimologinis tyrimas leidžia daryti tokias išvadas: septyni žodžiai laikytini skoliniais: penkių šaltinio reikia ieškoti vidurio vokiečių aukštaičių ar žemaičių kalboje, po vieną yra kile iš rytų slavų ir galbūt švedų kalbų; didžiąją dalį tiriamos ichtioniminės leksikos sudaro prūsų ar baltų dariniai. Tipiškiausia semantinė motyvacija - žuvies spalva ar būdingi judesiai. Aštuoniais atvejais ichtioniminių giminaičių aptinkama ne baltų kalbose, dažniausiai - slavų (6 žodžiai, iš kurių 2 ar 3 laikytini separatinėmis izoglosomis). Dvi separatinės izoglosos prūsų kalbą sieja su germanų kalbomis; prūsai drauge su kitomis baltų kalbomis išlaikė didžiai archajišką rūšinį žuvies pavadinimą ide. *d g uH-. Iš atskirų pavadinimų archajiškiausiais laikytini *lok(s)- (vienos iš lašišinių šeimos žuvų vardas) ir ungurio pavadinimas, padarytas iš *H2eng (i)- „gyvatė“. The etymological research of 25 Prussian names of fish allows drawing the following conclusions: seven words are considered to be borrowings: the sources of five of them should be sought for in German highland or lowland languages, one of the names is considered to stem from Eastern Slavic or Swedish languages, and the majority of the words derive from Prussian and Baltic words. The most typical semantic motivation is the colour of fish or its typical movements. In eight cases, ichtionym relative words derive from non-Baltic languages. Usually they come from Slavic languages (6 words, out of them 2 or 3 are considered to be seperative isoglosses). Two seperative isoglosses related the Prussian language with Germanic languages; Prussians and other Baltic languages preserved the most archaic name of fishe ide. *d g uH-. The most archaic name consisting of separate names is the name *lok(s) - (the name of fish of salmon family) and the name “ungurys” [eel], compound from *H2eng (i) - [snake].

Straipsnyje analizuojami bevardės giminės daiktavardžiai senuosiuose prūsų kalbos tekstuose. Bevardės giminės daiktavardžiai yra vienas iš labiausiai pastebimų skirtumų tarp prūsų ir rytų baltų kalbų. Lietuvių ir latvių kalbų ankstyvuosiuose tekstuose bevardės giminės daiktavardžių jau nerasta, tuo tarpu prūsų kalbos Elbingo žodynėlyje jų dar aptinkama. Filologinė šių bevardės giminės daiktavardžių formos interpretacija kelia daug problemų, nes jų etimologija ir statusas tebėra neaiškus. Ištyrus prūsų kalbos bevardės giminės daiktavardžių morfologijos ypatumus, leksinį paplitimą ir kilmę, daroma išvada, kad šie daiktavardžiai, nors dar gausūs prūsų kalbos paminkluose, sudaro ribotą daiktavardžių klasę. The article analyses neuter nouns in texts written in the Old Prussian language. Neuter nouns is one of the most noticeable differences between the Prussian and the eastern Baltic languages. Neuter nouns are already not found in earlier texts in the Lithuanian and Latvian languages, while they still do occur in the Elbing-Prussian Glossary. The philological interpretation of the form of these neuter nouns raises a lot of problems because of their etymology and status remain unclear. On the basis of studying the features of the morphology of neuter nouns of the Prussian language, their lexical occurrence and origin, it is concluded that these nouns, although being still abundant in records in the Prussian language, form a limited class of nouns.

In Baltistica 46(1), Miguel Villanueva Svensson presents a defence of the so-called “traditional” view on the development of long vowels in Balto-Slavic, in opposition to the views of the “Leiden school” (see Frederik Kortlandt’s Long vowels in Balto-Slavic, Baltistica 21(2)). Publikacijoje apžvelgiami Jono Kabelkos -- baltisto ir leksikografo -- darbai. Publikacijos autorių teigimu, Kabelka buvo ne vien didelės erudicijos ir labai kompetentingas baltų kalbų tyrėjas, įtaigus pedagogas, bet ir patyręs kalbos praktikas -- reikšmingų lituanistinių leidinių redaktorius, darbštus vertėjas. Leksikografijai itin reikšminga Kabelkos studija "Kristijono Donelaičio raštų leksika" (1964) ir drauge su katedros kolega Jonu Balkevičium parengtas "Latvių-lietuvių kalbų žodynas" (1977). "Kristijono Donelaičio raštų leksika" buvo bene pirmasis didelis jau brandaus mokslininko darbas, o antrąjį veikalą galima vadinti pirmuoju išspausdintu latvių-lietuvių kalbų žodynu. Nepamirštini ir tie leksikografiniai darbai, prie kurių rengimo Kabelka savo laiku buvo vienaip ar kitaip prisidėjęs. Tai pirmoji po karo "Dabartinės lietuvių kalbos žodyno" laida (1954) ir "Lietuvių kalbos žodyno" III, IV ir V tomai. Kabelka buvo jų redakcijos kolegijos narys, visus juos skaitė ir yra pareiškęs nemaža įvairių pastabų. Kabelkos, kaip baltisto, spausdintų darbų nėra itin daug, tačiau visi jie reikšmingi ir tam tikru mastu etapiniai: panašiai kaip ir leksikografinius, šiuos darbus irgi galima apibūdinti žodžiu "pirmasis", nes tiek "Latvių kalba" (1975, 2 leid. 1987), tiek "Baltų filologijos įvadas" (1982) yra pirmosios originalios šių dalykų studijų knygos aukštosioms mokykloms. The publication provides an overview of the works of Jonas Kabelka, a Baltic studies scholar and lexicographer. According to the authors of the publication, Kabelka was not only a very competent scholar of the Baltic languages of a remarkable erudition and a splendid pedagogue, but also an experienced language practitioner, i. e. the editor of significant Lithuanian studies publications and a diligent translator. In terms of lexicography Kabelka’s study "Kristijono Donelaičio Raštų Leksika" (1964) and "Latvių-Lietuvių Kalbų Žodynas" (“The Latvian-Lithuanian Dictionary”), prepared in cooperation with his department colleague Jonas Balkevičus (1977) are especially important. “Kristijono Donelaičio Raštų Leksika" was actually his first significant work as a mature scholar, the second publication can be referred to as the first ever Latvian-Lithuanian dictionary. The lexicographical works, to which Kabelka contributed in one way or another, also should not be forgotten. Those are the first post-war edition of "Dabartinės Lietuvių Kalbos Žodynas" (“The Dictionary of the Modern Lithuanian Language”) (1954) and volumes III, IV and V of "Lietuvių Kalbos Žodynas" (“The Dictionary of the Lithuanian Language”). Kabelka was the member of the editorial office of the said publications, read them all and provided a significant number of different comments. There is no large amount of works of Kabelka as a Baltic studies scholar, however those available are very significant and, on certain level, can be considered landmark ones: similarly as his lexicographical works, they could be characterized as “the first ever”, since both "Latvių Kalba" (“The Latvian Language”) (1975, 2 leid. 1987) and "Baltų Filologijos Įvadas" (“The Introduction into the Baltic Philology”) (1982) are the first original books on the subjects for higher educational institutions. In the opinion of the authors of the publication, Kabelka was the first ever well-known Latvian language scholar in Lithuania, who taught several generations of students of Vilnius University the Latvian language, which is the closest to the Lithuanian language both by sound and spirit.

Straipsnyje nagrinėjami žodžių darybos ypatumai, kurie išryškėjo lyginant paveldėtų paukščių pavadinimų darinius ir dūrinius lietuvių, latvių, baltarusių ir lenkų kalbose. Dauguma analizuotų darinių ir dūrinių rasta lietuvių kalboje. Darinių skaičius priklauso ir nuo paties paukščio. Kuo jis dažnesnis, kuo labiau prijaukintas, tuo daugiau vedinių padaryta iš jo pavadinimo. Priesagos yra produktyviausi darybos formantai visose nagrinėjamose kalbose. Priesagų vedinių reikšmės visose nagrinėjamose kalbose yra panašios; vyrauja deminutyvai, patelių (nomina feminina), mėsos ir vietų pavadinimai. Priesaginiai veiksmažodžiai, išvesti iš analizuojamųjų paukščių pavadinimų, yra reti visose nagrinėjamose kalbose. Dūriniai nėra būdingi analizuojamoms žodžių šeimoms, su jais daugiausia susidurta tik lietuvių kalboje. The article focuses on the features of the word formation, which showed up in comparing the derivatives and compounds of inherited names of birds in Lithuanian, Latvian, Belarusian and Polish. The majority of the analysed derivatives and compounds are Lithuanian. The number of them depends on a bird. The more popular the bird is. the more derivatives and compounds there are in that family of words. The suffixes are the most productive formants of the word formation in every language. The meanings of the suffix derivatives are similar in every language; diminutives, nomina feminina, the names of meat and places predominate. Suffixal verbs, derived from the analysed names of the birds, are a rare occurrence in each language. Composition is not a characteristic feature in the families of words under discussion, and is encountered mostly in Lithuanian.

Straipsnyje tiriamos vilniškių arealo trumpinių kilmės pavardės. Jas ištyrus buvo nustatyta, kad daugiausia yra vilniškių arealo trumpinių kilmės pavardžių, kurios atsirado iš antrojo dvikamienio vardo kamieno, galinčio būti praplėsto ir hipokoristine priesaga. Dominuojantys pavardžių kamieno struktūros tipai rodo, kad šiame areale (kaip ir kituose Lietuvos arealuose) dažniausi yra CVC struktūros kamienai, o hipokoristiniai kamienai yra plečiami priesagomis -k- ir -š-. Kelta hipotezė, kad visõs Lietuvos trumpinių kilmės pavardžių pamato ir struktūros tendencijos yra būdingos vilniškių arealo pavardėms, pasitvirtino. Ji remia vilniškių arealo kalbinio paveldo nenutrūkstamumą ir archajiškumą. Trumpinių kilmės vilniškių pavardės turi ir arealinių savitumų: 1. funkcionuoja keturi hipokoristinių kamienų struktūros tipai (CVC, CVvC, CVCC ir CCVC), nors kituose Lietuvos arealuose jų yra daugiau; 2. egzistuoja trumpinių kilmės pavardės su hipokoristiniu kamienu sar-, kurį turinčių pavardžių kitur Lietuvoje nėra; 3. tik šiame areale yra pakitę hipokoristiniai kamienai gėd- (>gėdž-), vain- (>van-), vid-k- (>vic-k-); 4. kamienai bor- ir voin- atsirado pakitus trumpinių, bet ne dvikamienių vardų kamienams; 5. nėra pavardžių, turinčių kamienus, praplėstus kitomis nei -k- ir -š- hipokoristinėmis priesagomis, kokių pasitaiko kituose arealuose; 6. iš vieną balsinę priesagą turinčių pavardžių dažniausios yra su priesagomis -(i)ūn-, -eik-, -evič- ir -ausk-. The article deals with the analysis of surnames of abbreviation origin in Vilnius area. The study showed that the majority of surnames of abbreviation origin in Vilnius area emerged from the second stem (which can be extended by hypocoristic suffix) of the double-stemmed name. Dominant structure types of surname stems shows that stems of CVC type are the most frequent in this (and many other Lithuanian areas) area, and hypocoristic stems are extended by suffixes -k- and -š-. The hypothesis that all the trends of structure and the basis of surnames which originated from abbreviations applicable for the entire Lithuania are characteristic to the Vilnius area as well was proven right. The hypothesis also supports the continuity and archaism of linguistic heritage in Vilnius area. Surnames which originated from abbreviations have their aerial peculiarities: 1) four structural types of hypocoristic stems exist (CVC, CVvC, CVCC and CCVC), while there are more of those types in other areas of Lithuania; 2) the surnames of abbreviation origin with hypocoristic stem sar- exist, while there are no surnames having this stem in other places of Lithuania; 3) hypocoristic stems have altered in this area only gėd- (→ gėdž-), vain- (→ van-), vid-k- (→ vic-k-); 4) stems bor- ir voin- appeared when stems of abbreviations, but not the stems of double-stemmed names, were altered; 5) there are no surnames with stems extended by other than -k- ir -š- hypocoristic suffixes, which is the case in other areas; 6. surnames having suffixes -(i)ūn-, -eik-, -evič- and -ausk- are the most frequent of the surnames with a single vocalic suffix.

FROM BALTIC ETYMOLOGY (1. “SIEVE” AND “PLEIADES”; 2. LITH. Medvė́galis; 3. LITH. ŽEM. Tvẽrai) Summary1. The form pr. E (346) baytan “sieve” should be corrected to Pr. (E) *saytan “id.” = Pr. *saitan “id.”, while this is derived from balt. *seitan “id.” (neutr.), which was not only “sieve”, but also “Pleiades” (an astronomical term). Later on the following formed: a) For Eastern Balts next to the form *seitan (neutr.) “sieve; Pleiades” its suffix derivative *Seitīna- “Pleiades” (seems to be neutr.) and b) for Western Balts next to the form *seitan “sieve; Pleiades” suffix derivative *Seitāran “Pleiades” (neutr.); the last being shown by its form (E 6) *Paytoran „id.“, should be corrected to *Saytoran = pr. *Paitāran „id.“ (neutr.), which probably derives from Western Balt. *Seitāran „id.“ (neutr.). The word is Baltic, i.e. Balt.-Sl. *seitan “sieve” – the derivative of the suffix *-ta- is from the presentic stem from the old Balt.–Sl. verb *sē-ti “to sift, sieve”.2. The name Medvėgalis (the ía- stem), which is the name of a large hilly area with small rivers fed by underground well, is a composition with a second component of -galīs from galas, meaning “corner, place”. The component Medvē-, which should not be linked with Žem. mẽdė “forest”, the little river’s name supposed by Cur. *Med(u)vē, flowing through a Curonian sacrificial place (a holy site). The gender of *Med(u)vē (up.) from the older Cur., *Med(u)vā is the suffix’s *-(u)vā- derivative from subst. Curonian (Balt.) *medu “honey” (neutr.). Such an etymology of the river’s name is supported by the river’s holyness (because of the sacrificial place) and especially the fact, that its water was clean because of the currents (where it flowed along the banks) and was clear like fresh linden honey (it seems that for the Balts, honey was holy).3. The name of the old Samogitian settlement called Tvẽrai, mentioned numerous times in the writings of the Teutonic Order dating from the 13th-14th century, first of all arose in the form Rus. (1251) Твиреметь (Твиременть), the origin of which is unclear. Now it has become clear, that this Russian form reflects the Lith. (Žem.) composition *Tveramedīs “Forest of Tverai” (ía-kamienį), which is: *Tvera- (= sing. *tveras “enclosure”) + *-medīs (< Žem. mẽdė “forest”). Next to the form Lith. (Žem.) *tveras “enclosure” would have been from Lith. (Žem.) *tverta- “id.”. Both synonyms are from Lith. (Žem.) *tvaras “id.” resp. *tvarta- “id.” – a suffixed derivative from the verb Cur. (Balt.) *tvar- “to enclose”.

Baltų ir slavų kalbose yra didelė žodžio „žvirgždas“ formų įvairovė, pavyzdžiui, žvirgždas, žvirždas, gargždas lietuvių kalboje, zvirgzdi latvių kalboje, *zvir(k)stan senojoje prūsų kalboje, гверстá, грествá rusų kalbos tarmėse ar żarstwa lenkų kalboje. Vienintelį baltų-slavų kalboms negiminingą žodį čia galima paminėti Avestos kalbos zarštva- „akmuo“. Nors formos yra fonetiškai panašios ir todėl gali suponuoti tą pačią kilmę, mokslininkams vis dar nepavyksta iki galo išsiaiškinti jų kilmės. Straipsnyje siekiama išanalizuoti fonetinius sunkumus, susijusius su formų palyginimu, ir pasiūlyti alternatyvų aiškinimą – indoeuropietišką etimologiją. Straipsnyje apžvelgiami ir kritiškai vertinami mokslininkų aiškinimai šių žodžių, jų formų ir reikšmės klausimais. Urbučio pateiktas aiškinimas, kad tiek lietuvių kalbos žvirgždas, kartu su baltų ir slavų kalbų kognatais, tiek žvyras, kilę iš baltų slavų kalbų žuir-, gali būti siejami su indoeuropiečių prokalbės veiksmažodžio šaknimi -ģuer- „šviesti, spindėti“. Žvirgždas laikomas senesniu baltų slavų kalbų vediniu, o žvyras – daug vėliau kilusiu vediniu. Ši teorija kritikuotina dėl semantinių ir formaliųjų priežasčių. Baltų ir slavų kalbų panašumai verčia autorių ieškoti kito paaiškinimo, kuris apimtų visus baltų ir slavų kalbų duomenis. Straipsnyje aiškinamas semantinis ryšys su indoeuropiečių prokalbės žodžiu –ģherzd(h)- „miežiai“.

THE BALTIC SUBSTRATUM IN THE LANGUAGES OF THE EASTERN SLAVSSummaryAlthough many archeological and onomastic publications demonstrate the existence of a Baltic substratum over a rather large section of the territory of the Eastern and Western Slavs, some Slavic studies scholars still ignore the influence exerted by this substratum in the evolution of the vocabulary, phonetics and other linguistic aspects of Slavic dialects. One group of linguists adheres to the principle that in elucidating the causes of changes taking place in a language, one must give priority to the patterns of internal language development. Others identify the lexical substratum with marginal (borderland) borrowings. But a drawback to the notion of substratum influence is the extremely large number of common features exclusive to the Baits and the Slavs, such that loanwords are ignored, especially the older loanwords of substratum origin. Scholars find somewhat more substratum Balticisms in the Polish and Belarusian dialects (especially in the Polesje region), but in northwest Russia, where there is a great abundance of hydronyms of Baltic origin, conspicuously few appellative Balticisms are reported.This article not only draws attention to this paradox, but also attempts to determine in which layers of the Russian vocabulary certain still unidentified loanwords from the Baltic languages are concealed.On the basis of the „Atlas substratnoy i zaimstvovannoy leksiki russkich govorov Severo-Zapada“ (Saint Petersburg, 2003), compiled by S. A. Myznikov, it is established that a large portion of the substratum Baltic lexical legacy in northwest Russian dialects is to be found among borrowings from the Finnic languages, e.g.: гумежи ‘field’, галага ‘frost’, xaрм(а) ‘frost’, марьюха ‘female capercaillie (European woodland grouse)’ and other words whose Baltic pedigree is established by S. A. Myznikov. In the Atlas certain Balticisms which might have entered the Russian dialects without the mediation of the Finnic languages are noted: кукорки ‘top section of the back, nape of the neck’, кука ‘a wooden mallet used to stun fish under the ice’, нерет/нерота/нарот ‘a net for catching fish’ and others.The atlas also contains other words which S. Myznikov considers borrowings from the Finnic languages, but which are more likely substratum Balticisms, e.g.: палы‘chaff (of grain), flax husks’ (cf. Lith. pelai ‘grain or hay husks, chaff = Latvian, pelus), керда ‘event; time or instance’ (cf. OPr. kērdan acc. sg. ‘once upon a time’ and Lith. kartas) etc.For lexicologists studying the history and origin of Russian vocabulary it suffices to establish the direct source of the borrowing, without delving into the older origin of the loan word. For this reason Russian Slavic studies scholars would consider most of the words mentioned here Finnicisms, and justifiably so. This does not satisfy Baltic studies scholars, however. It is important for investigators of the language which provided the loanwords to establish not only which neighbouring languages directly borrowed such words, but also the further fate of these „nomadic” words. It is data of exactly this kind which can elucidate the earliest history of the Baltic tribes and their languages about which we can find nothing in the annals of written history.

Tiek žemaičių i resp. (i)io ir C kamienų vienaskaitos inesyvo galūnė -ie, tiek aukštaičių -ėj(e), tiek latvių - ē (e) yra įsivesta iš ē kamieno vienaskaitos inesyvo vykstant ē ir i kamienų daiktavardžių mišimui. Kalbamoji galūnė pirmiausia pateko į i kamieno baritonų paradigmą, o vėliau buvo apibendrinta ir moteriškosios, ir vyriškosios giminės oksitonų paradigmoje. Kadangi iio kamieno senoji vienaskaitos galininko forma visame rytų baltų areale buvo pakeista i kamieno forma, žemaičių (ir jų artimesnių kaimynų) šnektose pagal susiformavusį i (ir C) kamieno vienaskaitos akuzatyvo ir inesyvo modelį inesyvo galūnė -ie buvo įsivesta ir į iio kamieno paradigmą. Daugelyje žemaičių šnektų i kamieno senoji daugiskaitos vietininko forma su -isu pagal ē kamieno modelį buvo perdirbta į formą su -ies(e). o kamieno vienaskaitos inesyvo forma (lauk)-e yra atsiradusi iš sintaksinės konstrukcijos lokatyvas *laukei + en –>*lauke + en –>lauken eliminuojant pirmojo komponento -e dėl (i)o kamieno būdvardžių ir gimininių įvardžių vienaskaitos naudininko ir inesyvo formų struktūros reguliuojamojo modelio poveikio. Latvių kalbos (i)o kamieno vienaskaitos lokatyvo formos galūnė -ā yra įsivesta iš (i)ā kamieno dėl (i)o ir (i)ā kamienų vienaskaitos iliatyvo formų neutralizacijos. The article explores the influence of syncretism of grammatical cases and analogy on the evolution of grammatical cases. In Samogitian speeches (aus)-ie of the nominative case in singular of i-stem end-accented nouns is the result of the influence of syncretic forms of the nominative and inessive cases in singular of ē-stem end-accented nouns. Both (i)io of i resp. and -ie of the inessive case in singular of C-stem nouns of the Samogitian dialect and -ėj(e) of the Aukštaitian dialect as well as Latvian -ē (e) were adopted from the inessive case in singular of ē-stem at the time of fusing ē and i-stem nouns. Spoken inflation first entered into the paradigm of i-stem baritones and later was embedded in the oxytone paradigm of feminine and masculine genders. Since the old inflection of the accusative case in singular of iio-stem in the entire Eastern Baltic area was replaced with the i-stem form, the Samogitian speeches (and closest neighbours) adopted -ie inflection of the inessive case in the paradigm of iio-stem by analogy with the accusative and inessive case model in singular for i (and C) stem nouns. Many Samogitian speeches replaced the old locative form in plural -isu for i-stem nouns with -ies(e) by analogy with ē-stem nouns. The singular inessive form of o-stem nouns (lauk)-e emerged from the syntactic construction locative *laukei + en –>*lauke + en –>lauken by eliminating the first -e because of the influence of the regulatory model of (i)o-stem adjectives and dative and inessive singular forms of gender-specific pronouns. Latvian -ā inflection of the locative case in singular for (i)o-stem words was adopted from (i)ā-stem because of the neutralisation of singular illative forms of (i)o and (i)ā-stem.

Straipsnyje aptariama Wolfgango Paulio Schmido (1929–2009) – kalbininko, pasaulinio garso indoeuropeisto, onomasto, baltisto – mokslinė veikla. Jis tyrinėjo tiek istorinės lyginamosios, tiek bendrosios kalbotyros sritis. Schmido baltistinės veiklos diapazonas labai platus. Profesorius buvo atidus baltų kalboms – prūsų, jotvingių, kuršių, kuršininkų. Nors parašė ir parengė spaudai nemažai knygų, Schmidas buvo iš esmės straipsnių mokslininkas. Vilnius, Ryga, Maincas, Leipcigas – tos vietos, kur labiausiai išsiskleidė jo mokslinė veikla. Nuo pat mokslinės karjeros pradžios Schmidas buvo ypač dėmesingas Senovės Europai ir Rytų Europos atspindžiui kalbos istorijoje. Originalus Schmido indėlis į hidronimijos sritį. Tiksliais morfologijos tyrimais pagrįstomis vadinamosios Senovės Europos teorijos prielaidomis remiasi baltų ir slavų kalbų santykius aiškinantis koncentrinis Schmido modelis. Ypač svarbūs yra jo tyrimai, skirti seniausiems baltų-germanų kalbiniams santykiams. Schmidas pabrėžė baltiškų skolinių Pabaltijo finų kalbose svarbą ir iškėlė kelias hipotezes dėl santykinės slavų-baltų-germanų kalbų izoglosų chronologijos. Baltų kalbų duomenis savo darbuose jis visada sugebėdavo įrėminti į indoeuropeistinį kontekstą, taip pat atsižvelgdamas ir į svarbius onomastikos faktus. Darydamas išvadas integralusis kalbininkas laisvai ir plačiai operavo indoeuropeistikos, onomastikos ir baltistikos duomenimis. The article deals with the scientific work of Wolfgang Paul Schmid (1929-2009), who was a linguist, world-famous Indoeuropeist, onomast, and baltist. He was researching both historical comparative and general fields of linguistics. Schmid's range of baltistic activities is very broad. The professor was attentive to the Baltic languages, i.e. Prussian, Yotvingian, Kurshian and Kurseniekian. Even though he wrote and published a large number of books, Schmid was essentially a scholar of articles. Vilnius, Riga, Mainz and Leipzig are those places where his scientific work has been expanded the most. Since the beginning of his scientific career, Schmid has been particularly attentive to ancient Europe and the reflection of the Eastern Europe in the history of language. Schmid's contribution to the hydronymic field was original. Assumptions of the so-called Ancient European theory based on precise morphological studies are used in the Schmid's concentration model interpreting the relations between the Baltic and Slavic languages. Especially important are his researches on the oldest linguistic relations between the Baltic and Germanic languages. Schmidt was emphasizing the importance of Baltic loanwords in Baltic Finno languages, and had raised several hypotheses about the relative chronology of the Slavic, Baltic and Germanic isoglosses. In his works he was always able to frame the data of the Baltic languages into the Indo-European context, also taking into account the important facts of onomastics. Making conclusions, the integral linguist was able to freely and extensively operate Indoeuropeistic, onomastics, and Baltistic data.
