The article reports on the new requirement of California that all voting machines, including touch-screen systems, will produce a paper audit trail capable of verifying the accuracy of a tally. The state requires the audit trail for primary vote to ensure election officials follow the state law passed in 2005. According to Bruce McPherson, a spokeswoman for California Secretary of State, 37 out of 58 counties in the state are using touch screen systems. She added that voters can verify their vote via a paper record, showing that their vote cast was indeed the vote that was recorded.
