â...when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and blinded by patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader and gladly so.â-Gaius Julius Caesar. Caesarâs observations hold true today, even in modern democracies. Politicians use fear and threat to influence, motivate or manipulate the electorate. However, explanations of the psychological and biological processes of how fear influences individualâs political positions have been largely absent. We propose that how fear influences the public goes much deeper than personal experience; rather, oneâs genetic makeup, in part, influences their general reaction to threat and fear stimuli, which influence how one takes in information. This in turn influences political preferences. Utilizing familial modeling and molecular genetic information, we begin to identify the genetic pathways of how fear influences political choices. ..PAT.-Unpublished Manuscript [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
