Increasing use of volatile renewable energy sources causes challenges in balancing supply and demand. Therefore, demand-side flexibility has rising importance for system operators and balancing authorities. Flexibility management methods are needed to integrate loads like ventilation systems of different buildings (e.g., residential and commercial) into flexibility service. However, the available methods described in research papers require further development for implementation in practice. Heating and cooling systems have received much attention from researchers, but the potential of ventilation systems has been left out of focus. Therefore, this paper provides a complete set of novel flexibility management methods for ventilation systems created from an aggregator's viewpoint. The flexibility is quantified through capacity (e.i. the amount of power consumption that can be altered), forced ventilation rate duration, and the tendered price for the service. The proposed methods were tested on a building model constructed and simulated in IDA ICE. The data processing and flexibility management methods were applied in MATLAB. Two types of ventilation systems with different sensor configurations were considered: constant and variable air volume. Forced ventilation rate duration is calculated using energy and mass balance analysis where the root means squared error was 10 to 33 min, depending on the system type, measured parameter, and sensor location. • A data-informed building energy management (DiBEM) framework was proposed. • It was demonstrated in an office/laboratory building with two-years' experimental data. • The impacts of energy efficient interventions were quantified through data-driven models. • The energy use intensity was reduced from 54.1 kWh/m2 to 42.8 kWh/m2. To support building operations in reaching ultra-low energy targets, this paper proposes a data-informed building energy management (DiBEM) framework to improve energy efficiency systematically and continuously at the operation stage. Specifically, it has two key features including data-informed energy-saving potential identification and data-driven model-based energy savings evaluation. The paper demonstrates the proposed DiBEM with a detailed case study of an office and living laboratory building located in Cambridge, Massachusetts called HouseZero. It focuses on revealing the performance of the energy-efficient interventions from two-years' building performance monitoring data, as well as evaluating energy savings from the interventions based on the data-driven approach. With Year 1 as baseline, several interventions are proposed for Year 2 including improvements to controls and operation settings, encouragement of occupants' behavior for energy savings, and hardware retrofitting. These were deployed to heating/cooling, domestic hot water, lighting, plug and other loads, and photovoltaic (PV) systems. To quantify the impacts of different interventions on energy end uses, several data-driven models are developed. These models utilize linear regression, condition model, and machine learning techniques. Consequently, the heating/cooling energy consumption that was already ultra-low in Year 1 (12.8 kWh/m2) is further reduced to 9.7 kWh/m2 in Year 2, while the indoor thermal environment is well maintained. The domestic hot water energy is reduced from 2.3 kWh/m2 to 1.2 kWh/m2. The lighting energy is only increased from 0.3 kWh/m2 in pandemic operations without occupancy in Year 1 to 0.8 kWh/m2 in partial normal operations in Year 2, while the indoor illuminance level meets occupants' requirements. Combined with other relatively constant loads and the reduction of plug and other loads due to COVID building operation restrictions, the total energy use intensity is thereby reduced from 54.1 kWh/m2 to 42.8 kWh/m2, where 5.4 kWh/m2 of energy reduction for Year 2 is estimated to be contributed by the energy-efficient interventions. PV generation is 36.1 kWh/m2, with an increase of 1.4 kWh/m2 from a new inverter. Summer peak electric demand of commercial buildings and districts is typically driven by the cooling load. This paper presents a novel approach to holistically optimize both the air- and water-side of the HVAC system in existing commercial districts. Therefore, this paper is different from the existing literature in its focus on integrated optimization of both air- and water-side of the HVAC system in a district scale as opposed to only airside or waterside. Methodologies proposed in this paper for integrated optimization of air- and water-side are brand-agnostic and their capabilities are demonstrated using a chilled water plant at Colorado School of Mines' campus. Based on the results for the test district, Mines' integrated air- and water-side optimizations of the HVAC system reduces its peak electric demand by 15% and 13%, respectively, for August 19 and 20, 2019. The air- and water-side optimization of the HVAC system resulted in greater savings than that achieved with only the waterside demand optimization method discussed in authors' previous paper focused on existing commercial districts. Traditional prediction methods of building cooling load fail to consider load changes caused by the time factor, which results in the failure of the best predicting effect and portability. To explore a more accurate cooling load predicting approach, in this paper, a new hybrid model based on decoupled weight decay Adam optimized improved LSTM neural network, denoted as DwdAdam-ILSTM, is proposed. First, the cross-correlation function is used to extract features with a high degree as the input data. Then, the decoupling weight decay adaptive moment estimation (DwdAdam) optimization algorithm is utilized to optimize the parameters of the improved long short term memory (ILSTM) prediction model. Next, the ILSTM is employed to establish a prediction model. Finally, to verify the validity and prediction accuracy of the proposed model, this paper selects the hourly cooling load data of a large commercial building in Xi'an as the research sample. Results of the experiment show that the Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE), Mean Square Error (MSE), Variation Coefficient of Root Mean Square Error (CV-RMSE) and Range of Relative Errors (E-R) of DwdAdam-ILSTM predicting the cooling load are 2.2%, 2.74, 5.2%, 0.061, 0.216. Compared with three version variant LSTM neural networks, the MSE and E-R values of this model are decreased by 74%-53%, 42%-49%, and 69%-64%, which has better performance in accuracy and stability. It testifies that the proposed strategy is reliable and effective. Additionally, this model can provide important guidance for daily energy management and multi-energy scheduling of buildings, which is helpful to the application of cooling load prediction. For this paper, B/C are understood as unique preconditions, specific characteristics for use, determining specific features of buildings, enabling an accurate understanding of non-residential spaces concerning energy use, user behaviour, and lighting. This paper describes the results of an overall quantitative (1st method) review and a systematic review (2nd method) of boundary conditions and their factors within different types of non-residential buildings from the users' perception. Followed by a qualitative experts' literature review (3rd method) on B/C within offices, schools, and hospitals chosen by a team of international experts working together on Subtask A: User perspective and requirements, Task 61 IEA (International Energy Agency): Solutions for daylighting and electric lighting. The first review method led to the selection of 21 papers. The second method resulted in the selection of 7 papers out of 93,143 found in Scopus; during the 3rd review, experts collectively chose 74 additional papers focussing on the users' factors contributing to specific B/C. The scope of this paper is limited only to offices, schools, and hospitals. Based on the findings, the authors recognise a broad definition of boundary conditions from specific values, and conditions to interconnected factors, user profiles, functions of the building types, and operating hours. This paper is an overview of B/C factors found in the literature that can help explain the occupants' behaviour and the use of spaces. B/C are often type of building/user/location/situation/simulation input-values and method-specific. Therefore, they cannot be widely applicable but offer patterns and help to understand the correlations between various factors shaping the built environment. A better comprehension of the reasons for identifying B/C and their factors can help in developing a deeper knowledge of how we use buildings to find optimal ways to design them. Carbon emissions from building operations have a critical impact on achieving carbon peaking goal in China. However, the provincial emission performance in building operations are quite different and it is still unidentified how they affect the national emission change and peaking target, making national emission reduction target hard to implement at the provincial level. This paper explores the driving factors leading to emission changes and examines the prospective emission peaks in China and China's provinces by adopting generalized Divisia index method (GDIM) and the combination of scenario analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. Furthermore, the regional emission heterogeneity and the contribution of provinces to the change and peak of national emissions are discussed to identify regions and provinces that should be focused on emission monitoring. Results show that in China and most Chinese provinces, energy consumption of commercial buildings, energy consumption and floor space of urban residential buildings besides income improvement, and the per capita CO 2 emissions of rural residential buildings contributed greatly to emission growth. Under current policies, commercial and urban residential buildings in most provinces would fail to reach their emission peaks ahead of schedule. The urban residential buildings in the northern region, commercial and rural residential buildings in the eastern region caused higher CO 2 emissions. At the provincial level, Shandong, Shanxi and Hebei made the top contribution to total emissions of commercial, urban residential and rural residential buildings, respectively. Shandong and the provinces in north China of urban residential buildings and four provinces including Shandong, Guangdong, Hebei and Zhejiang of commercial and rural residential buildings had the significant impact on the uncertainty of the peaking time of CO 2 emissions. Non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) has become an emerging technology in the energy sector for its effectiveness in the energy disaggregation of individual loads from the measured aggregated energy in main power supply of building. NILM has also evolved gradually over the past few decades, due to the significant advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), embedded/edge devices, and internet of things (IoT). From the review of literature, we observed that most of the NILM systems were only capable of monitoring different loads and it fails to detect and disaggregate the energy consumption of similar loads effectively. Further, most of works in the literature were focused on improving the performance of energy disaggregation of different loads in residential buildings and very limited works have been carried out for the similar loads in NILM system. Therefore, there is a necessity to study and evaluate the state of the art NILM algorithms for similar loads in real case scenarios for effective implementation in the commercial and industrial buildings. In this paper, we present a case study of the developed DeepEdge-NILM device which has been installed in a commercial building (office environment), where multiple similar and identical air conditioners (AC's) are used in the monitoring environment. A deep learning framework, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) has been implemented on the new set of features which comprises of electrical features and intrinsic features derived from the basic electric features using geometric mean for capturing the signature of similar loads effectively. From our case study, we observed that the performance of the deployed NILM system outperforms the baseline systems that have been developed using basic electrical features significantly. However, PCMs also present some negative impacts, such as weakening mechanical properties and increasing costs, chemical instability and so on. In this paper, the main characteristics of PCMs, design and incorporating methods, effects on energy consumption and construction reliability are comprehensively reviewed and discussed. Although many materials have the capacity of phase change, some organic PCMs are more suitable due to the higher latent heat and favourable phase change point in buildings, when eutectic PCMs present greater potential to become the optimal one but much effort is required for investigations. Current design methods and application in construction materials can meet the essential requirements, but the effectiveness is inadequate, including low efficiency of phase changing, leading to low energy storage. Subsequently, some promising research direction and critical areas for optimization are also proposed accordingly in this paper. Future development of PCMs, including novel PCM and efficient incorporation, real applications and functions in buildings are proposed. Additionally, multifunctional construction materials combining PCM deserve much attention and possess promising prospect for energy saving in sustainable and energy efficient building construction. Faults in air handling units (AHUs) in commercial buildings often waste energy and/or cause discomfort. Intermediate AHU sensors are dedicated merely for diagnostics and are essential to isolate faults rather than for controls; However, in many AHUs, such sensors are either missing, misplaced, or uncalibrated. This paper investigates three model-based methods to make up for the lack of reliable intermediate sensor data. To this end, trend data from five AHUs in five different buildings in Ottawa, Canada, are extracted for 2019. The accuracy of three different model forms is compared - artificial neural network (ANN), genetic algorithm (GA), and multiple linear regression (MLR) - are applied to model the supply air temperature of the AHUs. The behaviour of AHU heating and cooling coil valves and outside air dampers with and without the intermediate sensors is studied in this paper. Although installing temperature sensors before and after the heating and cooling coils facilitates detection of the faults occurring in AHUs, the authors showed the generated inverse models can act as virtual temperature sensors to estimate the intermediate measurements and isolate hard faults in AHU outside air dampers in addition to heating/cooling coil valves. • We review sixteen models for Variable Refrigerant Flow System (VRF). • We develop three data-driven models for VRF. • Physics-based and data-driven models are compared on a real-world dataset. • The impacts of different input features on VRF efficiency are analyzed. Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) systems are gradually gaining popularity in small and medium-sized commercial and residential buildings owing to their high part-load performance, flexible control, and ease of installation and maintenance. Developing models of VRF systems to predict their performance are important for model-based control, fault diagnostic and detection. There are VRF models published in existing literatures, however those models were developed and validated in different datasets. As a result, the model accuracy cannot be directly compared. To fill this gap, this paper presents a comprehensive review of the existing VRF models, and summarizes the input/output parameters and mathematical formulas of 16 VRF models from literature (referred to as physics-based model). Next, we validate and compare the model accuracy of existing models using the same dataset. Additionally, we develop data-driven models using the state-of-art machine learning algorithms, and compare the model accuracy between existing physics-based models with data-driven models. We find the model proposed by Hu et al. in 2019, which regresses the VRF cooling capacity and COP as a linear combination of indoor and outdoor temperatures times a cubed polynomial function of compressor frequency, is the most accurate physics-based model, with a prediction error of 22.19% in the training dataset and 22.44% in the validation dataset. XGBoost is the most accurate data-driven model, with a prediction error of 19.29% in the training dataset and 22.02% in the validation dataset. The data-driven model is more accurate while the physics-based model is more generalizable. • A mathematical model to calculate the LCOS for reversible fuel cells and Li-ion batteries. • Techno-economic model for a standalone PV solar system in green energy buildings. • Uncertainty and simulation cost analyses of energy storage systems used in green buildings. Energy storage systems (ESSs) were introduced to overcome the risks posed by energy curtailment. In this paper, we compare the Levelized cost of storage (LCOS) for PEM Reversible Fuel Cells, Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, and Lithium-Ion Batteries in three different locations in the United States (Tucson, Seattle, and Rochester) that are characterized by different energy consumption profiles. This research examines three commercial buildings of different sizes: small, medium, and large, with three occupancy profiles: low, medium, and high energy consumption in each of the three locations. The objective is to quantify the impact of uncertain demand and uncertain financial parameters on the LCOS. The results show that all ESSs can represent an attractive alternative to energy curtailment regardless of the building size or the occupancy profile. Further, the results show that fuel cells are a better fit for demand uncertainty as they are more resilient to changes and remain attractive despite that. The uncertainty analysis showed that the minimum LCOS was $0.049/kWh, and it was for a PEM-RFC in a small building in Tucson under high energy consumption behavior. The transitional pathway to carbon neutrality in commercial building stock requires improvement of energy efficiency, use of renewable sources and implementation of non-technological mitigation strategies. However, several methods have been developed to assess the carbon neutrality of commercial building stock but they mainly lack the ability of spatiotemporal quantification of energy demand and decarbonization potential which hinders the evaluation of carbon neutrality at multiple scales. This paper presents a GIS-synthetic hybrid urban building energy model (UBEM) coupled with a physical-based approach of building integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) potential estimation to incorporate a building-level energy model at a large scale that could further evaluate the feasibility of carbon neutrality of commercial building stock at a multi-scale level. As a case study, the proposed coupled scheme is applied to the commercial building stock of Tokyo to evaluate the cofound influence of active and passive design measures, and BIPV on the overall decarbonization potential. The results indicate the following findings: the annual CO 2 emissions can be reduced by 84% with the simultaneous implementation of all the measures; focusing on passive design measures is not enough to achieve carbon neutrality in commercial buildings that only contribute 10% of the overall reduction potential; 16% to 40% of the decarbonization potential is contributed by BIPV that is less than efficiency measures; and the scale-bounded comparative analysis shows that total BIPV potential changes in the order of magnitude of 29 to 54 with the variation of scale (with reference to district scale) and 4–16% more self-sufficiency observed at the building-by-building level in comparison to district and city scales. This demonstrates that this coupled approach can provide a purpose-driven perspective for the energy transition of commercial building stock at multiple scales with reduced computational time. School buildings have a great potential for carbon emission reduction since their annual emission is about 72 million metric tons. Currently, more than 30 % of school buildings were built before 1960 and are underperforming. To effectively reduce carbon emissions via school building retrofits, it is critical for policymakers to understand the carbon intensity reduction potential of retrofitting school buildings in different regions. Hence, this study develops a method to comprehensively assess the long-term carbon intensity reduction potential of aggregated commercial buildings on a county-by-county basis in the continental U.S. We apply this method to the K-12 school buildings including primary and secondary school buildings. This paper predicts the carbon intensity reduction potential of K-12 school buildings with eight building retrofit measures from 2022 to 2050 in the continental U.S. The results reveal several interesting findings: (1) In the approximately 3,000 counties of the U.S. from 2022 to 2050, the carbon intensity reduction potential of retrofitting K-12 school buildings in each county ranges from 0.41 kg/m2 to 40.00 kg/m2. (2) Even in the same climate zone, the trends of carbon intensity reduction potential from 2022 to 2050 are different depending on their electricity sources. For example, in a hot and humid climate zone, the carbon intensity reduction potential in Florida will decrease from 2044 to 2048. However, in Mississippi, the carbon intensity reduction potential from 2044 to 2046 will increase due to the termination of the nuclear energy usage. (3) Generally, reducing lighting power density leads to more carbon intensity reduction in most states, but it might not be applicable for states with high clean energy penetration, such as Washington. • A new urban building energy modeling tool-AutoBPS was developed. • AutoBPS calculated urban building energy demands, analyzed energy retrofit and rooftop PV potential via EnergyPlus. • AutoBPS automatically generated multi-zone models, considering shading from surrounding buildings. • A downtown district of 3633 buildings in Changsha, China, was simulated to demonstrate the tool's features. • All three energy conservation measures and PV installation could save 38.6% of total energy demand. China has promised to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and become carbon neutral before 2060. Achieving this target requires actions from all sectors, especially the building sector, which accounts for 33 % of the total energy consumption in China. Within this scenario, this paper introduces a new urban building energy modeling tool, Automated Building Performance Simulation (AutoBPS), to calculate urban building energy demands and to analyze energy retrofit and rooftop photovoltaic (PV) potential. AutoBPS uses a building-by-building approach to automatically generate multi-zone (one zone per floor) models based on the city building dataset, considering the shading effect by surrounding buildings. The tool simulates building energy use and PV generation via EnergyPlus. A downtown district of 3633 buildings in Changsha, China, was selected as a case study to demonstrate the features of the tool. Firstly, annual baseline energy uses of 1793 GWh were simulated by inputting Geographic Information System (GIS) data. Then, different energy conservation measures (covering envelope, lighting, cooling system upgrade, etc.) and roof PV generation systems were adopted to explore energy saving potential. The results showed that the window upgrade was the most energy-efficient individual measure for residential buildings, while the lighting upgrade was that one for commercial buildings. Altogether three measures could save 2.7 ∼ 30.7 % of annual site energy use intensity per building. The total energy demand could be reduced by 18.5 % by combining all measures and saved by 38.6 % when PV installation was added. Advanced building control strategies like model predictive control and reinforcement learning can consider forecasts for weather, occupancy, and energy prices. Combined with system and domain knowledge, this makes them a promising approach to reduce buildings' energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. For this reason, model predictive control and reinforcement learning have recently gained more popularity in the scientific literature. Nevertheless, publications often lack comparability among different control algorithms. The studies in the literature mainly focus on the comparison of an advanced algorithm with a conventional alternative. At the same time, use cases and key performance indicators vary strongly. This paper extensively evaluates six advanced control algorithms based on quantitative and qualitative key performance indicators. The considered control algorithms are a state-of-the-art model-free reinforcement learning algorithm (Soft-Actor-Critic), three model predictive controllers based on white-box, gray-box, and black-box modeling, approximate model predictive control, and a well-designed rule-based controller for fair benchmarking. The controllers are applied to an exemplary multi–input–multi–output building energy system and evaluated using a one-year simulation to cover seasonal effects. The considered building energy system is an office room supplied with heat and cold by an air handling unit and a concrete core activation. We consider the violation of air temperature constraints as thermal discomfort, the yearly energy consumption, and the computational effort as quantitative key performance indicators. Compared to the well-tuned rule-based controller, all advanced controllers decrease thermal discomfort. The black-box model predictive controller achieves the highest energy savings with 8.4 %, followed by the white-box model predictive controller with 7.4 % and the gray-box controller with 7.2 %. The reinforcement learning algorithm reduces energy consumption by 7.1 % and the approximate model predictive controller by 4.8 %. Next to these quantitative key performance indicators, we introduce qualitative criteria like adaptability, interpretability, and required know-how. The introduction of smart building technology promises many operational and productivity benefits and enables smart grid integration. A significant barrier to deploying smart building applications is mapping the building sensor metadata to the requirements of the smart building applications. In this paper, we have studied the problem of weakly supervised machine learning to accelerate the metadata mapping process, and demonstrated that weak supervision is a promising approach, which to the best of our knowledge, has not been studied in this context. We developed a pattern-based workflow that enables subject matter experts to craft simple rules that process the idiosyncratic text found in building sensor metadata. Our method was validated using three medium-sized commercial office buildings and a public dataset. We worked closely with a team of commercial building subject matter experts to develop and validate our workflow. We compared our approach to active learning and discovered that weak supervision appears to scale better with building size. Subject matter experts overwhelmingly preferred this approach compared to manual methods, and our study with three buildings shows that weak supervision can reduce the time to annotate the metadata in building systems by a factor of 4. Because the building sector has become a huge energy consumer, providing useful approaches can help tackle this important issue. Windows are an important component of a building since most of the natural light inside the building is provided by passing this component. Improper design of windows and their associated components, such as shadings, overheats the space and increases energy consumption, and on the other hand, disturbs the visual and thermal comfort of the building's occupants. The present paper aims to present a new approach for multi-objective optimization of the architectural specifications and control parameters of a smart shadow curtain. The use of this proposed approach leads to a significant reduction in building energy consumption and improved thermal and visual comfort. Energy-related simulations are performed through EnergyPlus software. Afterward, 21 design variables including control strategies and setpoints, location and orientation of shading, slat dimensions and material specifications, as well as hourly slat angle are considered in JEPLUS software. These simulations are conducted in four geographical directions over seasonal and annual periods for the city of Tehran, Iran. JEPLUS + EA software is employed to perform sensitivity analysis on the outputs of JEPLUS software and data optimization. Morris sensitivity analysis is implemented to investigate the effects of input variables on the objective functions. The NSGA-II algorithm is then applied to optimize the data to extract the optimal points on a Pareto front. The optimization results indicate that the external blind performs better than the internal blind and also the smaller the angle of the blind slat is, the better the visual comfort is but increases the electricity consumption for lighting. A comparison of the results of multi-objective optimization of controlled blind characteristics with initial values demonstrates that based on geographical directions, the total energy consumption of the entire building decreases by a range of 40–50 % per year, while visual comfort and thermal comfort are improved by ranges of 70–100 % and 10–40 %, respectively. Renovating buildings is one of the major targets within the current European goals toward decarbonized cities in 2050. The residential stock offers extensive opportunities to achieve current energy horizons, since more than 75% of the existing buildings in the European Union are energy deficient, with poorly insulated thermal envelopes which drive indoor conditions far from current comfort standards. This paper aims to provide a protocol for forecasting the upgrading potential of this housing stock in southern Europe, particularly in Mediterranean areas, identifying the level of obsolescence and possibilities for improvement, especially in winter indoor thermal conditions, offered by standard passive strategies. Following an architectural, constructive, and energy analysis of common patterns throughout the urban stock of the southern Spanish city of Córdoba, three case studies built-in 1951–1980 – pre-dating the first Spanish regulations on thermal conditioning in buildings – were selected for the assessment. Long-term monitoring and in situ tests (i.e., infrared thermography, airtightness) recorded the performance of these buildings under real occupancy conditions, subsequently incorporating them into the calibration of simulation energy models, aiming to predict the potential improvements after implementing standard passive strategies in these buildings. Results show that building retrofits not only improve the quality of indoor thermal conditions by increasing indoor temperatures by 3–4 °C but also almost eliminate occupied hours outside the comfort range. An automated methodology that generates sufficiently accurate building models is essential for both the adoption of advanced control strategies like Model Predictive Control, and the estimation of building energy flexibility required for building-grid interaction. This paper presents such a methodology for the generation of multi-zone resistance-capacitance (RC) thermal network models of residential buildings. The models are calibrated using smart thermostat data and predict the indoor air temperature up to 24 h ahead. The methodology starts with a very simple model and iteratively adds one parameter at a time; the parameter that increases the quality of the model the most, as measured with the Bayesian Information Criterion. When the quality of the model cannot be improved any further, the procedure is reversed to delete any redundant parameters. The algorithm concludes when neither adding nor removing a parameter increases the model quality. The algorithm is applied on measured data from an experimental facility, a bungalow house in Québec, Canada. The resulting model can accurately predict all 9 zone temperatures 24 h in advance with an RMSE of 0.44 °C. Commercial buildings, especially large irregular commercial buildings with complex space and dense occupation, have high energy consumption and carbon emissions. Moreover, the actual operating performance differs significantly from its design, in terms of energy conservation and carbon emissions. This study selected an irregular large-scale green commercial building in Dalian, a coastal city in the cold zone of China. The running energy consumption and indoor physical environment were investigated and analyzed, and a satisfaction survey was conducted using the Post-occupancy evaluation (POE) methods. The promotion strategies of holistic design were proposed by comparing the operational building performance with the design target. The research shows that the energy consumption of the building was 68.02 kWh/m2, which failed to meet the standard requirements. The carbon emission was 74.76 kgCO 2 /m2. Less than 10 % of humidity in summer fell in the expected range, and the lowest value of PM 2.5 concentration in winter was 28.3 %. The score of indoor environmental quality and service satisfaction was low. This paper identifies the problems and analyzes the differences between the operation stage and design phase. As electricity prices continue to rise, it is essential that UK non-domestic consumers develop smart energy management practices. However, most of these consumers lack awareness of the spatial–temporal dynamics of electricity prices and their tariff components. To help overcome these barriers and contribute to energy price digitalisation, this paper presents a Modelling UK Electricity Regional Costs (MUKERC) framework. A bottom-up methodology that defines all the tariff components and then aggregates them to quantify the cost of a kWh across each half-hour of the day. The framework not only facilitates understanding which tariff components have a higher impact during different time periods, but also depicts how they vary spatially across regions. This model was used to estimate and analyse the evolution of electricity costs from 2017 to 2024. Case studies from buildings in the education sector are showcased depicting their energy costs derived from their load profiles. Results show that the London area has the lowest average prices, while the Northern Wales & Merseyside is the most expensive. From the case studies conducted, peak period charges account for 17% of annual electricity costs (occurring between 4 and 7 p.m.). Winter period charges represented about 53% of the charges. The MUKERC framework showcases the valuable insights data-driven costing models offer as it allows to understand the dynamics of electricity charges and identifies "when" and "where" the cost of electricity is more expensive; thus, supporting the development of bespoke cost-effective energy measures that improve resource efficiency and smart energy management initiatives. This paper presents a nonlinear hybrid Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach for building energy systems based on Modelica. The MPC approach takes into account two characteristics that are very common for building energy systems: nonlinearities (inherent in the building envelope and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems) and discontinuities (in the form of on/ off operation, discrete operation states and operation modes). The hybrid MPC approach integrates both continuous and discrete optimization variables into the control concept and thus is capable of controlling building energy systems with binary or integer decision variables, switching dynamics or logic if-then-else constraints. By employing a time-variant linearization approach, nonlinear Modelica optimization problems are approximated with high accuracy and transformed into a linearized state-space representation. Based on the linearization output, a linearized optimization problem is generated automatically in every MPC iteration, which is extensible by various integer characteristics and is accessible for a wide range of mixed-integer solvers. Many businesses are looking for ways to improve the energy and carbon usage of their buildings, particularly through enhanced data collection and control schemes. In this context, this paper presents a case study of a food-retail building in the UK, detailing the design, installation and cost of a generalisable model predictive control (MPC) framework for its Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system. The hardware/software solution to collect relevant data, as well as the formulation of the MPC scheme, is presented. By utilising cloud-based microservices, this approach can be applied to all modern building management systems with little upfront capital, and an ongoing monthly cost as low as $6.39/month. The MPC scheme calculates the optimal temperature setpoint required for each Air-Handling Unit (AHU) to minimise its overall cost or carbon usage, while ensuring thermal comfort of occupants. Its performance is then compared to the existing legacy controller using a simulation of the building's thermal behaviour. When simulated across two months the MPC approach performed better and achieved the same thermal comfort for a lower overall cost. The economic optimisation resulted in an energy saving of 650 kWh, with an associated cost savings of $240 (an improvement of 1.7% compared to the baseline), while the carbon optimisation gave negligible CO 2 savings due to the inability of the building to shift heating to low-carbon periods. Utility incentive programs are an important channel to support the deployment of energy efficiency in buildings. To date, these programs have largely been limited to single-component strategies. However, many utilities are now motivated to identify and develop multi-component system retrofits to achieve deeper energy savings, which are essential to achieving broader energy and greenhouse gas reduction goals in the buildings sector. In this paper we present the energy savings, demand reductions, and cost-effectiveness of 16 systems retrofit packages in six utility regions in the United States. These results are being used by these utilities to inform and develop incentive programs for systems retrofits. Our analysis shows that packages with proven lighting and HVAC measures can provide 5–22% whole building annual energy savings, and 13–22% annual energy costs savings, using utility incentive program baselines (code and existing building). The packages are reasonably cost effective for replace-on-burnout but generally not for a retrofit scenario prior to end of equipment life. Demand response can increase both the energy savings and energy cost savings, further improving the cost effectiveness of these packages. We analyzed the impact of using existing building vs. code baselines for calculating savings, showing that the choice of baseline in developing utility incentive programs has a substantial impact on the attributable energy savings to a program, with significant implications for the overall viability of a program (generally savings against existing building condition are higher and improve project and program cost-effectiveness). Using energy conservation measures (ECMs) for building retrofit can significantly reduce building operational carbon emissions (BOCEs) and contribute to Chinese carbon neutrality by 2060. This paper involves 11 feasible ECMs for commercial buildings in hot-summer and cold-winter zone, China, and proposes a quick assessment approach to BOCEs reduction. Prototypical models are simulated for ECMs using EnergyPlus and the emission intensity is corrected by the building shape factor and window-to-wall ratio. Based on pre-simulated results, effects on reducing emissions of individual measures and packages of them are studied to develop regression models in SPSS. The results show that decreasing the U-factor of external walls, lighting power density (LPD), or shading coefficient can reduce BOCEs linearly. BOCEs are most sensitive to LPD and using daylighting control can reduce emissions by 5–15%. In addition, increasing the boilers' efficiency reduces emissions linearly, while performance improvement of chillers or heat pumps reduces emissions logarithmically. Furthermore, utilizing variable speed pumps, heat recovery ventilation, and air-side economizers can reduce emissions by 3.8%, 6.6%, and 15.2%, respectively. Finally, significant interactions exist among measures of enhancing glazing U-factor, adding external shading, using energy-saving lamps, and improving cooling/heating system efficiencies. The developed regression models are validated in a retrofit case in Shanghai. Through assessment, the case can reduce BOCEs by 15.9 kgCO 2 /m2, with a reduction rate of 20.8%. Compared with recorded data, the relative error of assessing emission reduction is −13.0% and that of assessing reduction rate is 0.5%, which are acceptable in the decision-making stage of retrofit strategies. Making buildings zero-net energy (ZNE) is one of the major strategies for achieving carbon emission reduction goals. For this strategy to be successful, it entails a very significant reduction in energy use – 50% or more. In small commercial buildings, however, owners and building management teams usually have limited resources for identifying, analyzing, and procuring appropriate retrofit measures for reducing such use. An approach to overcome this limitation is the development of bundles of energy efficiency measures that can be presented to building owners/operators as a comprehensive package. The research presented in this paper focuses on an experimental evaluation of the impacts of a retrofit package developed for small office buildings in California. Performing this evaluation in a full-scale whole-building integrated systems test facility allowed a side-by-side evaluation in real time, against a reference case, of the impact of the retrofit package not only on energy use but also on visual and thermal comfort. The retrofit package evaluated is comprised of a combination of HVAC, lighting (including daylighting), and plug load measures. The evaluation occurred at different times of the year in order to account for seasonal variations in environmental conditions, including solar angles and weather. The experimental facility allowed testing for two different façade orientations: south and west. Results show that the proposed ZNE retrofit package can save significant amounts of energy for small commercial buildings. During cooling-prevalent periods, total energy savings were 65% for south orientation and 68% for west orientation; during heating-prevalent periods total energy savings were 22% for south orientation and 25% for west orientation. Occupancy-Centric Controls (OCC) are specialized control sequences which modulate building operation as a function of the sensed occupancy status, thereby leading to increased energy savings, while maintaining thermal comfort. However, occupancy sensor nonidealities, such as bias, latency, random noise, or misdetection, can degrade the performance of OCCs. In this paper, we perform a systematic simulation-based investigation to understand the impacts of nonidealities from both occupancy counting and presence sensors on OCCs. We use a prototype medium office EnergyPlus-based building model, with a detailed zoning layout, as our evaluation testbed. Subsequently, we evaluate the effectiveness of rule-based, occupancy-centric HVAC, lighting and equipment control strategies on an annualized basis. Furthermore, we systematically characterize occupancy sensor nonidealities. Our results indicate that for counting sensors, although the effects of random noise on energy consumption and thermal comfort are minimal, sensor bias and latency can increase HVAC and whole building energy consumption by up to 3.3 % and 4.9 %, respectively. Additionally, noting that an enumeration approach to understand the sensor impact evaluation map for all considered nonidealities may be resource- and time-intensive, we propose a Bayesian Optimization (BO)-based smart sampling approach to efficiently identify the most impactful sensor nonideality sets. Our results indicate that the proposed BO-based approach is able to increase the computational efficiency by 60-fold, when compared to an exhaustive grid-search (enumeration) method. For presence sensors, we observed that higher false positive rates could have a direct impact on HVAC and whole building energy consumption. Partial occupancy of commercial offices has become the norm in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Given this, occupant-centric control (OCC), which adapt building systems based on occupants' presence or preferences, offer an alternative to traditional control that assumes full occupancy. However, poor sequences of operation can degrade the benefits of OCC. This paper explores this interaction by examining energy data from two buildings – one with two control logic faults corrected and an occupancy-based ventilation OCC implemented in 2020, and one with traditional ventilation – from 2019 to 2020. Sequences that impacted implementation in the first building are discussed. Then, a calibrated energy model of the second building is developed to evaluate how occupancy-based ventilation alongside changes to the sequences of operation – namely supply air temperature (SAT) reset and economizer high limits – impacted energy use. The inclusion of OCC and improved sequences in the second building saved 30.6% and 9.6% of annual heating and cooling energy, respectively. Without an SAT reset, OCC saved 4.4% and 3.9% of heating and cooling, respectively, compared to 15.7% and 5.7% when an SAT was present. Recent events have forced building managers to examine energy use during vacant periods and revealed miscellaneous electrical loads (MELs) as an opportunity for savings. This paper addresses a key step in unlocking these savings, specifically the reliable identification of when a building is vacant. A Vacancy Inference Engine (VIE), using sensor fusion, was developed to identify vacant periods based on outputs from common sensors, historical building vacancy patterns, and expert knowledge. The VIE calculates the confidence that a building is vacant, allowing building managers to balance the capture of energy savings with the possibility of complaints due to powering down MELs. The VIE has the advantage over logistic regression and other models in that it does not require a full set of ground truth for the training process. The VIE successfully predicted vacancy in an office building using input data streams of instantaneous electricity demand, indoor carbon dioxide concentrations, and the number of active Wi-Fi connections. The VIE's ability to predict vacancy was compared to that of logistic regression using a metric based on the Complaint Opportunity Rate and found to be nearly identical (0.94 versus 0.95, respectively). Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) models merge various influencing IEQ factors into a single overall indicator. The outcome of the IEQ model is usually a numerical rating or score that provides an evaluative summary of the IEQ performance. Many publications have developed IEQ models from their field measurement and/or satisfaction survey results, however with distinct measurement protocols, IEQ weighting schemes and analytical methods. This paper presents a comprehensive review of 25 studies focusing on developing IEQ evaluation models in commercial buildings. Two IEQ measurement approaches (objective and subjective measurement), and three types of IEQ models—subjective-objective models, objective models and subjective models—are first differentiated. Five commonly used analytical methods (linear regression, non-linear regression, analytical hierarchy process, ensemble averaging method, and updated IEQ acceptance model) are discussed. The interaction effects between IEQ factors and relative contribution of them to the overall IEQ satisfaction are also assessed. Twenty-five studies are then mapped by data collection method, analytical method and number of survey responses. Five key criteria for developing quality IEQ models—number of IEQ factors included, spatial and temporal variability in physical measurement, analytical methods for model development, and the number of responses if subjective surveys are carried out—are proposed and discussed. A simple ranking and scoring system is propounded for evaluating the quality of the IEQ models developed in the reviewed studies. Results show that two studies achieved a total score equal to or higher than 80% of the total score, and 16 studies achieved a minimum of 60% of the total score. The energy consumption data of buildings contain plenty of knowledge that can be used to enhance demand side management (DSM). However, existing research rarely conducts comprehensive analysis on the multiple energy characteristics for the same building group simultaneously. Additionally, DSM requires the load side to meet the flexibility demands at multiple time scales. To address these problems, the paper presents a strategy with two-stage clustering to recognize multiple energy load patterns of higher education buildings at different time scales. In this work, the low frequency component (LFC) and high frequency component (HFC) are obtained from daily load curve by wavelet decomposition, which are clustered by two-stage clustering to construct typical patterns of load at different time scales. Based on these patterns, a series of exploratory studies on their characteristics are launched. The influence characteristic of factors on multiple energy load patterns are revealed. The results show that different functional buildings have obvious differences in the distribution of their electrical LFC patterns on working days and nonworking days, and the shapes of the dominant patterns of power load and cooling load are more consistent with the change of the ambient temperature throughout the day. In addition, the uncertainty of the load pattern is quantified by entropy, which is used to reflect the order degree of the load pattern change over time for each building. The results indicate that probability of a pattern remaining unchanged is higher than transitioning to other patterns, and the uncertainty of HFC pattern for power load is generally higher than that of LFC. A large part of energy consumption in homes, offices and commercial spaces is related to Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) devices. The effective parameter on the consumption of HVAC systems is internal heat gains that arise from occupants, electric equipment and lighting. In order to reduce the energy consumption of these systems, internal heat gains should be predicted accurately. Since there are few investigations performed on the prediction of internal heat gains, in this paper, three predictive models, namely multiple regression model, Levenberg–Marquardt back-propagation (LM-BP) model and similar days method based on combined weights, have been deployed. By assessing the influential factors on internal heat gains, fundamental theories, structures, equations and parameters of these models are thoroughly proposed. To examine the prediction techniques, an office building in China was considered. It was found that all the proposed models have high accuracy; however, the LM-BP neural network showed the most precision among other models with RMSE = 15.59, MAE = 10.16 and MAPE = 6.35. This model had a higher agreement with the actual internal heat gains compared to the predetermined working programs in the ASHRAE standard 90.1. The proposed models used in this study can lead to providing a theoretical base for scholars and engineers to improve the predictive control of HVAC systems, which plays an important role in enhancing thermal comfort, saving energy of residential buildings. End use disaggregation methods offer an alternative to fulfill weaknesses in a metering network, especially in large commercial and institutional buildings. Unlike non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) methods that mostly rely on high frequency power consumption data and focus on residential buildings, this paper introduces an end-use disaggregation approach using building automation system (BAS) data. The BAS data provide information about the operational status of main energy-consuming systems and equipment such as fans, pumps, air handling unit (AHU) heating coils, and variable air volume (VAV) terminal reheat coils. The proposed method uses a suite of multiple linear regression models estimated by the genetic algorithm and a least-square solver to disaggregate heating and electricity use data using BAS data as predictors. The method was demonstrated with data from an academic office building in Ottawa, Canada. The accuracy was evaluated by comparing the disaggregation results to ground truth energy use data acquired from dedicated submeters. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the occupant behavior (OB) modeling approaches, occupant-related input parameters with particular focus on the occupancy schedule, lighting, appliances use schedule, temperature set-point schedule, and domestic hot water usage for urban building energy modeling (UBEM). Strategies to consider the occupancy sub-models as co-simulation connecting to urban building energy simulation are discussed. Some potential datasets that could be used to derive occupant-related inputs at the urban scale are presented and highlighted. Further, the correlation between occupants' activity level, plug, and lighting loads is discussed in detail. Finally, the limitations and challenges of the occupant-related data connecting to building energy modeling are discussed, along with the research gaps and future directions of occupant-centric UBEM. In order to reduce CO 2 -emissions it is necessary to reduce the energy use in the existing building stock significantly. Gadehavegård – a social housing built-up area consisting of 19 similar blocks of flats with nearly 1000 dwellings situated in Denmark – needed renovation and therefore a block was selected for testing an ambitious renovation that would result in a significant reduction in energy use and CO 2 emissions. The ambition was to reach the German Passivhaus standard for the building, i.e. a very strict requirement, especially for a renovation project. The renovation included insulating the facades from the outside, replacing all windows, insulating the roof, installing decentralized mechanical ventilation systems with efficient heat recovery and a photovoltaic system on the roof. In addition, the balconies were included in the apartments by installing foldable glass façades. This paper gives a detailed description of the renovation project along with measurements of the energy use and indoor climate before and after renovation. Comparing the achieved results to the Passivhaus requirements show that the original goal is not achieved, however, the building fulfils the less strict requirements of the Passivhaus renovation certification EnerPHit and is still a very good example on how significant reductions in energy use can be achieved for these types of buildings. Results before and after renovation are compared using the energy signature and shows that heating energy consumption has been reduced by more than 50% even though indoor temperature on average has increased from 21.7 °C to 23.3 °C. • A comprehensive analysis of data from commercial buildings in United States to identify operational problems and opportunities. • These opportunities were not strongly correlated with building vintage, size, or building type, but were reflective of how the buildings are operated. • This analysis showed that opportunities to improve building operations exist in almost every building. • There was wide variation in whole building energy savings, ranging from 0 to 50% and 0 to 18 $/m2 with median percent annual whole building savings of 12% and median normalized annual cost savings of $1.75/m2. In the United States, as much as 30% of the 19 EJ that commercial buildings consume is considered excess. Much of the excess energy is due to the inability to manage building operations efficiently. Because almost 20% of the total primary energy consumption is associated with commercial buildings, significant energy reductions in this sector are needed to mitigate climate change. Therefore, many cities and states are mandating periodic "tune-ups" of these buildings to eliminate excess energy consumption. Although the benefits of tune-ups and retro -commissioning are clear, focusing these mandates to look for specific opportunities has been a challenge because of the lack of studies that document the prevalence of opportunities. Therefore, we analyzed building automation system data from 151 buildings across the United States to document common operational problems and opportunities to improve building operations. This analysis showed that opportunities to improve building operations exist in almost every building. These opportunities were not strongly correlated with building vintage or size, but were reflective of how the buildings are operated. The prevalence of the top 20 opportunities ranged between 74% and 23%, with 40% of these associated with air-handling units. The rest of the opportunities are associated with schedules, chilled and hot-water distribution, and zone controls. Of the 151 buildings, 69 of them implemented corrective actions of some or all opportunities that were identified. Implementation varied across the Re-tuning categories, with 60% for schedule opportunities, 50% for zone opportunities, over 40% for the air-handling unit and hot-water opportunities, and 35% of the chilled-water opportunities. There was wide variation in whole building energy savings, ranging from 0 to 50% and 0 to 18 $/m2 with median percent annual whole building savings of 12% and median normalized annual cost savings of $1.75/m2. This study financed by ERDF and the Wallonia Region estimates the annual electricity consumption (EC) of building stock, including the 3 building sectors namely residential, tertiary and industrial building. The estimation takes into account appliances, electrical heating, cooling, lighting, cooking and EC by m2 on a building level. The results are spatialized on different territorial scales. Using cadastral data of more than 1,700,000 Walloon buildings and annual EC data from a sample collected in 2012 from the energy reports, the paper assesses the EC of the whole building stock and tests to what extent different types of variables (building factors and socio-demographics) explain annual EC. It then shows which individual variables have the highest explanatory power. In contrast to many other studies, the research recognizes the problem of multicollinearity between predictors in regression analysis and uses Lasso regression to address this issue. Three separate regression models were used to study the predictors of annual EC of residential, tertiary and industrial buildings. EC building factors (appliances, auxiliary and main heating, domestic hot water and cooking) explained the largest share which is 66.46% of the variability in EC for residential buildings whereas the EC usages share for tertiary buildings (lighting, heating and domestic hot water, air conditioning, cooling, etc.) is about 50.53% and 38.55% for industrial buildings. Socio-demographic variables on their own explained about 61.59%, 26.34% and 3.41% of the annual EC, respectively for residential, tertiary and industrial buildings. Hence, the building variables present the highest explanatory power for EC, presumably because heating and cooling EC are included in this study. The study highlights that when attempting to explain EC related to Walloon households, including heating and cooling EC, appliances usage has the strongest predictive power in residential buildings. On the other hand, the projected decrease in EC use for heating in existing residential buildings is −8.82% and −10% for existing tertiary buildings while the projected increase in EC use for cooling in existing tertiary buildings is + 11.94% from 2012 to 2050 on a regional scale. These trends follow the predicted regional heating degree-days (HDD) of −11.76% and cooling degree-days (CDD) of 14.04% for the same period based on the gated recurrent unit (GRU) an implemented deep learning (DL) model. This paper takes Jinan, a typical city in cold region IIB of China, as an example, to quantify and analyse the residential layout parameters related to heating energy consumption: group layout, building orientation and building spacing; ECOTECT and HTB2 are used to model and simulate the energy consumption of the three types of layout residential groups selected for the study, and the relationship between residential group layout parameters and residential heating energy consumption is analysed based on multiple linear regression analysis. The study shows that, on the premise of ensuring the same building density, the group layout has the greatest influence on the building energy consumption, and the courtyard layout has lower heating energy consumption compared to the row and staggered layout; on this basis, the influence of building orientation and building spacing on heating energy consumption is discussed. The study shows that increasing the spacing between buildings to meet the daylight spacing will reduce energy consumption by 4% and that a 15° shift to the west will reduce energy consumption by 5%. A desirable solution is to utilize transfer learning, which can transfer the knowledge learned from data-rich building energy systems to FDD tasks in data-sparse systems. However, the potential of applying transfer learning to such FDD has not been systematically investigated. Accordingly, this paper proposes a transfer-learning-based methodology for fault diagnosis in building chillers. Experiments were conducted on two water-cooled screw chillers to collect both fault and fault-free data. Transfer-learning-based fault diagnosis experiments were implemented with consideration of different transfer learning tasks, training cases, learning scenarios, and transfer learning implementation strategies. The experimental results validate the value of transfer learning for FDD in building energy systems, especially when the experimental data available for model development are limited. The maximum accuracy improvements were 12.63% and 8.18% in the two learning tasks. This paper proposes a novel energy conservation measure that optimizes the planning of heating and cooling systems for tertiary sector buildings. It consists of a model-based predictive control approach that employs a grey-box model built from the building and weather data that predicts the building heat load and indoor temperature. Different from classical optimization approaches where the discretized differential algebraic equations are integrated into the optimization formulation, our model is calibrated using black-box multiobjective optimization, which allows for decoupling the predictive model from the optimization problem, thus having more flexibility and reducing the total computational time. Moreover, rather than requiring the angle of solar radiation, solar orientation and solar masks to calculate the radiation data, our approach requires only a simple model of the solar irradiance. The calibrated model is then used by heating and cooling optimization strategies that aim at reducing the energy consumption of the building in the next day while satisfying the indoor thermal constraints. The proposed approach was applied in a case study of a commercial building during heating and cooling seasons and the results show that it was able to yield up to 12% of energy savings while having a mean power forecast error of 8%. The current HVAC design practice is sequential or iterative at best. This conservative approach does not consider the increased potential enabled by advanced sensing and control technologies that may be installed at a later date. Selection and optimization of the building control system is mostly an independent step in a sequential design process. The optimal design and operation of HVAC systems must account for the interconnected controls between the subsystems. In this paper, we develop a data-driven, simulation-based, black-box optimization approach based on Bayesian optimization (BO) to efficiently explore the design space and jointly optimize both the system and control-design parameters of a commercial building chiller plant. The co-design optimization determines the optimal number/configuration and size of the chillers, and the optimal chiller sequencing control variables that minimize the overall energy consumption, peak-load, operating, and capital costs incurred over a design horizon, subject to cooling load constraints. The problem is formulated as a mixed-integer programming model and solved using BO that leverages a high-fidelity commercial chiller plant emulator to evaluate different candidate designs. Based on real chiller data, we conducted a detailed economic assessment and numerical study that highlighted that, compared to current design practices, the co-optimization approach resulted in capital cost savings of about 0.7 million US dollars, annual energy savings of nearly 33%, and a 56% reduction in peak power demand while delivering the same level of cooling to the building due to the chiller's optimized sizing and operation (switching thresholds, chiller staging).
