Many post-occupancy comfort studies of energy renovated residential buildings have documented elevated temperatures above comfort levels, not only during the summer period but also during the shoulder months. The main focus in renovation projects is on heat savings while the risk of overheating is not considered. This paper analyze in which situations overheating and cooling need to be addressed in building energy renovation projects and which renovation measures are causing this need. The analysis contains four reference single family houses from central and northern Europe. Both dynamic and static methods were used to assess the overheating risk. In terms of overheating occurrences, the most critical renovation measures are the insulation of the floor and the increase of the airtightness. The contribution of decreasing the g value of the window glazing is positive. The way to energy efficiency improvements also results in an extension of the overheating period and higher average and maximum building temperatures. The increase of the ventilation rates and the use of shading systems are useful measures for preventing overheating increase. The purpose of this paper is to present a case of an office building and show how different concepts of envelope construction affect the energy efficiency of building. Assessment of energy performances of different scenarios of the hypothetical models of the office building in the central zone of Belgrade is the aim of this research. A few scenarios are created for each hypothetical model: basic scenario and scenarios of two shading devices types in order contribution to reduction of cooling demands to be estimated. The office building scenarios are modelled and analysed by using PHPP ’ 2007 software to estimate heat and cooling energy demands. Also, CO 2 emissions are discussed. Comparative analysis of the results highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the treated models and scenarios of office building envelope construction. Findings indicate the preferable solutions and highlight methodological approach in the office building envelope design, which has not yet been adopted extensively in practice in our country. Methodological approach and findings can generally be applicable for new office building design, both in Belgrade and in the similar climatic conditions. Abstract: This paper presents a heat storage and cooling concept that utilizes a phase change material (PCM) and a thermally activated building system (TABS) implemented in a hollow core concrete deck. Numerical calculations of the dynamic heat storage capacity of the hollow core concrete deck element with and without microencapsulated PCM are presented. The new concrete deck with microencapsulated PCM is the standard deck on which an additional layer of the PCM concrete was added and, at the same time, the latent heat storage was introduced to the construction. The challenge of numerically simulating the performance of the new deck with PCM concrete is the thermal properties of such a new material, as the PCM concrete is yet to be well defined. The results presented in the paper include models in which the PCM concrete material properties, such as thermal conductivity, and specific heat capacity were first calculated theoretically and subsequently the models were updated with the experimentally determined thermal properties of the PCM concrete. Then, the heat storage of the decks with theoretically and experimentally determined thermal properties were compared with each other. Finally, the results presented in the article highlight the potential of using TABS and PCM in a prefabricated concrete deck element. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

• That aim is to quantify the impact of urban context on building cooling loads. • Building energy modeling is used to test 108 urban context configurations. • The configurations combine different context heights, distances, and orientations. • Savings of 26% and 24% were observed for total and peak cooling, respectively. • Implications on cooling system sizing and urban planning practices are discussed. This paper presents a systematic evaluation of the impact of the built urban context on the cooling energy performance of buildings subjected to extreme hot weather conditions. The proposed approach combines building energy modeling with an extensive parametric variation and statistical analysis scheme. It provides a direct quantification of inter-building shading on energy performance, with an emphasis on the cooling demand patterns for buildings of different types and sizes. Results show that the combined effects of urban context height, distance, and orientation can lead to significant reductions in cooling demand, reaching up to 26% for total cooling loads and 24% for peak cooling loads. The observed savings are particularly notable for residential buildings, making them an ideal target for urban development strategies that aim to leverage inter-building shading effects for energy conservation purposes. Moreover, an in-depth analysis of peak loads illustrates how the density and compactness of the urban form can be used as passive design strategies to reduce the load, and hence, the size of air conditioning systems. • A new methodology to investigate the impact of thermal mass is defined. • The use of unrepresentative boundary conditions could lead to inaccurate conclusions. • High thermal mass helps to decrease and regulate the internal temperature. • High thermal mass could increase energy use in the summer and winter seasons. • Isolating thermal mass through internal insulation results in better energy performance than external insulation. Contradictory conclusions have been reported on whether thermal mass reduces or increases energy demand in hot and cold climates. A novel approach to measuring the impact of thermal mass on the building's energy consumption is presented. The method aims to better represent reality and applies two different control conditions simultaneously in a numerical model: the first condition, which has been used in past studies, adjusts the internal boundary condition based on the time duration of heating/cooling activation (simulating an occupancy pattern) and the second, which has not been used in past studies, adjusts the internal boundary condition based on both the time duration and the internal temperature (simulating an occupancy pattern and the thermostatic control system). When investigating the impact of thermal mass on the internal temperature in a scenario where no heat is transferred into the building, the high thermal mass outperforms the low thermal mass, showing a time-shifting effect, long time lag, and small decrement factor. However, when modelled using the method presented in this paper, high thermal mass results in greater energy consumption during summer and winter periods in Saudi Arabia. During transition seasons where temperature swings occur on either side of the indoor set-point temperatures, thermal mass reduces thermal transmission. The impact of thermal mass is also investigated for several climatic conditions in Saudi Arabia. Simulation results show that an internally exposed thermal massive wall section results in greater energy consumption when compared to a similar building with isolated thermal mass (i.e. insulated internally). This is due to the fact that even though the internal temperature inside the building is being cooled/warmed up to the set-point, the thermal mass continues to transfer heat that is absorbed by the building's fabric from/to the interior, placing a greater demand on the cooling/heating system. The total energy demand of data centres has experienced an important increase in the last years. This is why data centres industry and researchers are working on implementing energy efficiency measures in data centre portfolio. The cooling system of these unique infrastructures can account for 40% of the total energy consumption. Therefore, air management plays an important role to reduce operating costs and to increase overall cooling system efficiency. In order to improve and optimize the energy consumption and thermal management in data centres, appropriate metrics are imperative to evaluate their efficiency and performance. The present paper examines the air management of a real data centre by the use of the most promising air metrics. Noticeable air recirculation and hot spots were observed in the facility. Dynamic modelling was used to evaluate the benefit of air inefficiency mitigation. The combination of air management improvement with increasing the supply air temperature and reducing the air flow rate would allow important energy reduction in the cooling system. Ground source heat pump systems have been proved to be one of the most efficient systems for heating and cooling in buildings. However, an optimal energy performance depends on a good control of the auxiliaries, which stand for an important part of the total energy consumption. The authors previously developed an experimental in situ optimization methodology for the water circulation pumps frequency of ground source heat pump systems when single stage and multi-stage ON/OFF regulation is employed. However, the user comfort was not completely met under extreme weather conditions during summer. This paper presents the upgrading of this energy optimization strategy combining circulation pumps frequency variation and building supply temperature compensation in order to ensure the user comfort while keeping high energy savings. Experimental results show that the user comfort is met by means of this new methodology and the energy savings (33%) are even higher than those obtained with the previous methodology. Passive Houses are buildings which provide comfortable indoor conditions at an extremely low heating and cooling load. The peak daily average heating and cooling loads are typically below 10 W/m 2 and annual useful energy demands are below 15 kW h/(m 2 a). The Passive House standard was originally developed in Germany. In this paper we show by hygro-thermal dynamic simulation that it is possible to realize residential Passive Houses in all of the world's relevant climate zones, represented here by Yekaterinburg, Tokyo, Shanghai, Las Vegas, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore. The window quality, insulation levels, and mechanical services all depend on the climate as well as on the building's shape and orientation. The resulting annual energy demand for space conditioning of the Passive Houses is 75 to 95% lower than that of a traditionally insulated building of the same geometry. In humid climates like Shanghai or Singapore, special attention must be paid to humidity aspects. In climates which are hot and humid all year long, the total useful energy demand for sensible and latent cooling may exceed 70 kW h/(m 2 a) even in a Passive House. • A systematic review on personal comfort systems (PCS) has been conducted. • Local thermal discomfort determines the effectiveness of PCS. • PCSs may balance thermal comfort, energy efficiency and health in offices. • This review provides guidelines for PCS design. Personal comfort systems (PCS) promise individualized thermal comfort, energy-savings and may even contribute to health by locally heating/cooling specific body segments. To date, however, insights into PCSs' specific design guidelines or their effectiveness on whole-body thermal comfort are scarce. The fundamental question on which body segments should be targeted has not yet been answered. This paper attempts to answer this question by systematically reviewing studies on PCSs' effects on local body segments and the whole body restricted to office scenarios. The results imply that the local thermal discomfort distribution over the body determines the PCSs' effectiveness and that PCSs should eliminate local thermal discomfort by targeting it directly or indirectly. In a typical office scenario, local cooling may affect thermal perception in non-targeted body segments, however local heating may not. Therefore, PCSs could heat uncomfortable body segments directly in cold environments while indirect cooling may also effectively relieve discomfort in warm environments. Moreover, moderate local conditioning does not affect skin temperatures in most non-targeted body segments. The findings suggest that human thermoregulation may be stimulated, and hence, benefit our health, without compromising thermal comfort. Abstract: A number of radiant heating/cooling systems have been applied in Mainland China in recent years for its improved thermal comfort and inherent energy saving potential. Because the systems require relatively higher temperatures for cooling and lower temperatures for heating, many natural low-grade energy sources can be directly or indirectly used. However, because of a lack of information about prior practical projects, a number of difficulties in design, construction and management of the systems have been encountered, and energy efficiency is not necessarily achieved in all situations. This paper reviews the practical applications in four major projects involving different building types located in different climatic cities and presents the associated considerations in system design. Other factors affecting the energy efficiency of the systems are identified, such as the spatial convection and radiation heat transfer processes in indoor environments and the envelope thermal properties. Further studies are needed to achieve system optimization and to realize the full energy saving potentials of radiant systems by developing analytical design methods and monitoring the actual energy use of such systems in completed projects. Abstract: This paper identifies the impact of thermostat strategies on heating and cooling energy consumptions in buildings, thus suggesting the importance of a database for understanding the effect of thermostat settings and for deciding energy-conscious strategies. Using computer simulation, diverse thermostat strategies – change of setback period, change of set-point temperature, and change of setback temperature – were tested parametrically in a typical USA single-family homes, located in two climate zones, namely cold (Detroit, Michigan) and hot-humid (Miami, Florida). Analysis revealed that heating and cooling systems were significant energy-consuming components in each climate zone. Accordingly, heating energy in cold climate zones and cooling energy in hot-humid climate zones have potential for matchingly significant saving. Diverse thermostat strategies (changes of setback period, of set-point, of setback temperature) demonstrated their obvious impacts on such saving. In the cold climate in particular, the heating system showed the most significant energy-saving effect via proper thermostat strategies. Abstract: This paper presents a robust strategy for online fault detection and optimal control of condenser cooling water systems. The optimal control strategy is formulated using a model-based approach, in which simplified models and a hybrid quick search (HQS) method are used to optimize the performance of the overall system by changing the settings of the local process controllers. A system level online fault detection scheme is embedded into the control system and used to monitor whether the system operates in a healthy condition. The faults considered are mainly the component performance degradations. When a fault is detected, the control system will be reconstructed to regain the control through using robust schemes. The performance of the proposed strategy is tested and evaluated against on a simulated virtual system representing the actual condenser cooling water system in a super high-rise building. The results show that the fault detection scheme is effective in identifying system performance degradations and the fault-tolerant control strategy with online fault detection and optimal control can enhance the overall system performance significantly when the operation of condenser cooling water systems suffers from performance degradations, as compared to that using optimal control only. Abstract: This paper presents a strategy for improving the reliability and the energy efficiency of chiller sequencing control based on the total cooling load measurement of centralized multiple centrifugal chiller plants. The improvement is achieved as follows. Firstly, a fused measurement of building cooling load is used to replace the direct/indirect measurement. Secondly, the maximum cooling capacity of individual chillers is computed online using a simplified centrifugal chiller model. Thirdly, the online computed maximum cooling capacity is calibrated according to the quality of the fused measurement in order to deal with the possible misbehaviours in measurement instruments. A simplified model for computing the maximum cooling capacity is developed and validated using field data. The performance of the proposed chiller sequencing control strategy is tested and compared with a conventional chiller sequencing control algorithm. Test results are presented showing that the proposed strategy can effectively improve the reliability of chiller sequencing control and reduce the energy consumption of chiller plants. Abstract: This paper presents a detailed meta-analysis of end and primary energy use for heating, cooling and ventilation of 11 low-energy non-residential buildings and one residential building in Germany that belong to the EnOB research program launched by the German Federal Ministry for Economy. In particular, the analysis emphasizes the substantial impact of auxiliary energy use on the efficiency of heating and cooling performance. The investigated buildings employ environmental energy sources and sinks – such as the ground, ground water, rainwater and the ambient air – in combination with thermo-active building systems. These concepts are promising approaches for slashing the primary energy use of buildings without violating occupant thermal comfort. A limited primary energy use of about 100kWhprim/(m2 neta) as a target for the complete building service technology (HVAC and lighting) was postulated for all buildings presented. With respect to this premise, a comprehensive long-term monitoring in high time resolution was carried out over the course of two to five years, with an accompanying commissioning of the building performance. Measurements include the energy use for heating, cooling, and ventilation, as well as the auxiliary equipment, the performance of the environmental heat source and sink, and local climatic site conditions. Abstract: Cooling of buildings in the UK is responsible for around 15TWh per year of energy demand, largely powered by electricity with highly related CO2 emissions. The Greater London Authority wished to understand the potential impact of London''s growing need for cooling on UK CO2 emissions in the period up to 2030. This paper describes a model developed to analyse the cooling requirements for London''s key building stock and assess how these would be affected by change in system mix, improvements in system efficiencies, and by varying degrees of climate change. The analysis showed that, if left unchecked, the growth in active cooling systems in London could lead to a doubling of CO2 emissions from this source by 2030. This growth will be due to increase in building stock, increase in market share of cooling systems, and climate change. The last of these is difficult to predict, but by itself could add 260,000–360,000tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2030. This increase can be strongly mitigated, or even offset, by improvements in system efficiency. The difference between no efficiency improvements, and an assumed 1–3% annual efficiency improvement is around 340,000tonnes by 2030. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This paper investigates factors explaining the adoption of energy-efficient heating, cooling, window, and lighting technologies in U.S. commercial buildings. It presents multinomial logit models of technology adoption using the 2003 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey microdata set, examining, first, fundamental building components, and, second, energy-efficient adaptations. Key findings are that the choice of fundamental building components is strongly influenced by locational factors, the activities that are expected to take place in the building, and building-specific characteristics. Lighting technologies are an exception, and are poorly explained by these factors. By contrast, energy-efficient heating, cooling, window, lighting, and control adaptations appear to share common drivers, and are more likely to be adopted in newer, larger, more energy-intensive, owner-occupied buildings. These are the buildings that can best afford the up-front costs of innovation, which is often a design-intensive process. Absent policy interventions, the energy-efficient adaptations are unlikely to diffuse rapidly to the rest of the commercial building stock. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present the design and installation of a fuzzy logic controller of indoor thermal and visual comfort as well as indoor air quality, using the EIB (European Installation Bus) system through interconnection with Matlab. An experimental chamber is implemented for testing and optimization of the system. The chamber which controls the indoor environment, consists of interconnected nodes (sensors and actuators) in an EIB fieldbus network infrastructure connected with a PC, through RS-232 port. Control is achieved by a fuzzy controller, which is programmed in Matlab. The interconnection between EIB and Matlab is realized via the EIB OPC server and an OPC Client for Matlab. In this way artificial intelligence control, EIB-based platforms and Matlab are interconnected in order to explore the possibilities of using advanced control techniques in energy efficient practices in real buildings.
