Cleaner end-uses of energy, including electrified heating, represent a cornerstone of a decarbonised energy transition. On the other hand, many governments have adopted measures to mitigate energy poverty and facilitate access to modern energy services, including heating. Both objectives may be interrelated, since energy poor people are less likely to use cleaner (and costlier) heating fuels. This paper analyses the impact of energy poverty on the decision to use different heating sources and identifies whether the events of COVID and the Ukraine war have affected this decision. Thus, a multinomial probit model is estimated using information from a large database of Spanish households in 2019, 2021 and 2022. The results show that being energy poor increases the probability to use carbon-intensive energy sources for heating compared to electricity, and that COVID and the war in Ukraine have affected this relationship. The increase in energy poverty over those years has negatively affected the decarbonisation goal with respect to heating choices. The influence of those events on the probability to use electric heating depends on some household and dwelling features. Efficient cooling of the trans-critical CO 2 vapor compression cycle to improve system performance is a crucial research topic. This paper proposes an innovative approach called distribution compression (DC) to achieve the same effect as subcooling in a trans-critical CO 2 thermodynamic cycle. In the DC system, the trans-critical CO 2 at the gas cooler outlet is no longer further cooled but subjected to a secondary pressure boost and releases heat in ordinary heat sink conditions as in the gas cooler. Thermodynamics calculated the change in performance of the DC system under different working conditions with different secondary boost ratios. The optimal secondary boost ratio related to evaporation and gas cooler outlet temperatures under optimal discharge pressure based on the baseline system was obtained. The results show that compared with the baseline system, the DC system can effectively improve the system performance, and the maximum refrigeration COP increase is between 8.2 % ∼ 10.76 %, and the maximum heating COP increase is between 5.37 % ∼ 6.34 %. The cooling or heating capacity increase can reach up to about 26 %. The ideal secondary boost ratio in a DC system is not highly demanding, and the increased input power for the second input power for the secondary boost will not exceed 20 % relative to the baseline system. Comparing the COP of the DC system over current systems that only use a single subcooling technology still shows advantages. According to reviewed studies, localized methods improved thermal comfort, and the same thermal sensation could be achieved in lower air temperatures, especially when using local radiant heating systems. Abstract The identification of heating load patterns, also known as load profiles, is of vital importance to effective management and operation of district heating system (DHS). Clustering algorithms have been successfully applied in identifying heating load patterns. In this paper, we propose that the heating load patterns should be analyzed more specifically, and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) clustering is selected to extract sub-patterns. The novelty of this paper is that a new GMM clustering is applied to identify temperature related sub-pattern and people behavior related sub-pattern, and the clustering result is further utilized to improve the accuracy of prediction models. An energy station in Tianjin is used as case studies and four typical operation patterns are found with their characteristic of occur time and energy signature, which are defined as working pattern, on-duty pattern, daytime–nighttime pattern and nighttime–daytime pattern. The results reveal that this proposed method can make an in-depth identification of heating load patterns and also proves that the prediction accuracies of regression and artificial intelligence model are significantly improved by utilizing the GMM clustering results. Abstract In this paper, a new method entitled "BBEE (Building Blocks Energy Estimation)" for estimating energy performance at the district level is proposed. It consists of two branches, namely the BBEE algorithm and an energy database of a typical zone. This method is used to keep architects and urban planners informed of the energy performance of their design by clustering zones and looking up corresponding energy intensities from the database. Because the related energy databases are preexisting, energy performance modeling and simulation are not required from the user. On the other hand, the database is set up and continuously replenished by parameterization simulations with a basic model of typical zones. This task was separated from the estimation process and operated by experts, which shortened the process and reduced modeling errors. As a case study, an urban district with eight buildings was estimated under three climate conditions separately following the proposed BBEE method. Results were compared with the full-model simulation using a simulation tool called DeST. The difference in annual heating demand between estimation and simulation was reported as less than 6% in all three cases. The potential applications and limitations of the proposed BBEE method are discussed at the end of this paper. Although further improvements are still required, the new estimation method could be helpful for energy performance estimation at the district level at the early stage of design. Abstract Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are sized using design conditions, conditions that occur only a small percentage of time each year. As a result, HVAC systems frequently operate at part-load conditions since their capacity is larger than necessary except in the most extreme weather conditions. Most HVAC systems for residential and small commercial buildings in the U.S. use on/off controls, however, most energy modeling software tools do not simulate the on/off nature of this type of HVAC controls. This paper presents the development and validation of an on/off controller for residential applications in EnergyPlus using a custom EMS (energy management system). This controller is validated using minute-level field data collected for a house located in Sacramento, California with simulated occupancy and internal loads. The results obtained from EnergyPlus with and without the use of the developed on/off controller are also compared. The application of the developed on/off controller improves the HVAC energy use results accuracy around 19% in terms of the Normalized Mean Bias Error (NMBE) at the one-minute level compared to the results without the application of the on/off controller. It also makes the nature of operation and associated energy use signal of the HVAC system more realistic in terms of the on/off nature of the residential direct expansion coils. Furthermore, in this paper, the accuracy improvement of the results dominated by the internal loads is investigated by applying the one-minute schedule compared to the usual hourly schedules for the internal thermal loads. Abstract The implementation, in Building Performance Simulations (BPS) tools, of robust models capable of simulating the thermophysical behaviour of a Phase Change Material (PCM) represents a fundamental step for an appropriate thermal evaluation of buildings that adopt PCM-enhanced envelope components. Reliable and robust measuring procedures are essential, at a material and component level, to provide experimental data for the empirical validation of software tools. The traditional laboratory tests that are generally used for the validation of models present some limitations, because PCMs are usually subjected to conditions that may be very different from the real boundary conditions of the building components in which PCMs are applied. Furthermore, in many experimental full-scale mockups, the relatively small quantity of installed PCM and the combination of several thermal phenomena do not allow software tools to be tested in a reliable way. In this paper, an experimental procedure, based on a modified Heat Flow Meter Apparatus, has been developed to test the behaviour of PCM-enhanced components; the procedure, which is based on the measurement of the sinusoidal response, has been set up to provide data for the comparison and testing of numerical models and of BPS tools. Moreover, general indications and guidelines are provided to solve some issues related to building specimens that contain bulk PCM in order to obtain a more accurate measurement of their performance. The experimental results presented in this paper were obtained from two different bulk PCMs (organic and inorganic). It was found that it is important to evaluate different PCM typologies and different thermophysical boundary conditions, including partial and full phase transitions, to test simulation codes that implement PCM modelling functions. In fact, some phenomena, such as hysteresis and subcooling effects are more evident when partial phase transition takes place. The results related to the characterization of the thermal conductivity of a paraffin-based PCM have shown a significant increase (up to 42%) of the equivalent thermal conductivity from a solid to a liquid state, with an upward heat flux, thus highlighting that further investigations and improvements are needed to measure the equivalent thermal conductivity in the different PCM phases. Solar-based radiant heating systems represent a sustainable, and relatively low-cost, technology to raise the temperature of the interior thermal mass of our buildings. Through the use of direct absorption solar thermal collectors, the same working fluid which absorbs the solar energy can be used to transfer the energy for storage in the thermal mass of the structure using a network of pipes embedded in concrete floors. This study investigates a promising working fluid which can be used in such systems – one which is based on multi-walled carbon-nanotubes suspended in normal base fluids. A major stumbling block affecting the wide spread use of carbon-nanotube nanofluids is their low dispersion stability at elevated temperatures, which significantly reduces the absorption capabilities of the nanofluids and could lead to clogging of the pumps used to circulate the fluids. In this paper, we report on a scalable UV-ozone (UVO) treatment technique to produce highly stable dispersions for the elevated temperatures experienced by working fluids in radiant heating systems. To probe suitability of UVO treated multi-walled carbon-nanotube (MWCNTs) for solar-assisted radiant heating systems, this paper investigates the effects of exposure time and temperature on stability, optical absorbance properties, the extent of functionalisation, and the photothermal conversion performance of UVO-treated MWCNT nanofluids. In this paper, the problem of dispatching the operation of a distribution feeder comprising a set of heterogeneous resources is investigated. The main objective is to track a power trajectory, called the dispatch plan , which is computed the day before the beginning of operation. In this paper, we propose a method to optimally compute the dispatch plan so as to optimize the operation of the feeder while making sure to allocate enough local reserves to absorb deviations of the realizations. Indeed, during real-time operation, due to the stochasticity of part of the resources in the feeder portfolio, tracking errors need to be absorbed in order to track the committed dispatch plan. This is achieved by modulating the power consumption of a utility-scale battery energy storage system and of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system of a commercial controllable building. To this end, a hierarchical controller is designed to coordinate these two controllable entities while requiring a minimal communication infrastructure. Due to the inherent different response times of these systems, the power injection of the electrical battery is controlled at a sub-minute time-scale so as to absorb high-frequency tracking errors and, therefore, deliver the dispatch service. At a slower time-scale, the controllable building is controlled to maintain the state of charge for the electrical battery at a scheduled level by means of a model predictive controller. The model predictive controller is designed in order to account for both comfort and operational constraints of the controllable building, as well as power limits for the electrical storage. The effectiveness of the proposed control framework is demonstrated by means of both an extensive simulation analysis, as well as a set of 12 full day experimental results on the 20 kV distribution feeder in the campus of the Swiss institute of technology in Lausanne, that is comprised of: 1) A set of uncontrollable resources represented by five office buildings (350 kWp) and a roof-top photovoltaic installation (90 kWp), 2) a set of controllable resources, namely, a grid-connected electrical storage (720 kVA–500 kWh), and a fully-occupied multi-zone office building (45 kWp). • A model for calculating the thermal carrying capacity of water bodies was established. • The impact of meteorological parameters on water bodies was analysed. • Water source heat pumps failing to meet building heat demand in winter is analysed. • Solar radiation is the main source of thermal regeneration of water bodies. • Increasing the water depth or area can raise the thermal heat load-carrying capacity. Meteorological parameter changes not only affect the heat load-carrying capacity of the surface water, but also affect the heat load demand of the building, thus changing the heat load matching between the water source heat pump system and the users. In order to study the climatic adaptation of the heat load-carrying capacity, this paper establishes an analytical model of the water body's heat load-carrying capacity and the building's heat load with the solar radiation intensity, the change of the water body and the heat extraction time as variables. Experimental and simulation studies on the heat load-carrying capacity of lake water were carried out under the winter climate conditions in hot summer and cold winter areas. The results show that increasing the depth or area of the lake can improve the heat load-carrying capacity. Solar radiation is an important factor affecting the temperature of surface water body, the stronger the solar radiation the greater the temperature rise of the water body. Changes in outdoor air temperature have a significant impact on water temperature, and a sudden drop in outdoor air temperature will result in a sharp drop in water temperature. When the water body area was 3000 m2 and 50000 m2, the maximum integrated temperature drop of the water body was 15.0℃ and 9.7℃, which was 2.02 and 4.85 times of the temperature drop of heat extraction, respectively. Reduced heat load-carrying capacity of the surface water body or decreased COP of the heat pump is an important reason why the surface water source heat pump heat supply fails to meet the user's heat demand in winter. In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out some of the current gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarises the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEB implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The study analyses the present situation and provides an overview on future prospects for nZEB in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEB implementation and especially to the challenge/opportunity of retrofitting existing buildings. Creating a common approach to further develop nZEB targets, concepts and definitions in synergy with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe is essential. • Load shifting experiments were performed in a single-family inhabited house. • Room radiators were controlled with variable set-point schedules. • Heat consumption was successfully shifted from the controlled rooms. • The total load shifting on a building level was limited. • A list of challenges for developing E-MPC in real buildings was identified. Recent simulation-based studies have indicated that load shifting using Economic Model Predictive Control (E-MPC) of radiators for residential space heating can be utilized for demand response purposes in energy systems. However, there is a lack of studies on whether this load shift potential can be realized in real, inhabited buildings. This paper reports on a field experiment aiming at realizing load shifting of space heating in a single-family house with a hydronic radiator system connected to the local district heating. Radiators in a limited number of 'active' rooms were controlled using set-point schedules mimicking the typical behavior of E-MPC. The results indicate that it was possible to load shift heating consumption in the 'active' rooms but that the load shift for the building as a whole was limited due to the hydronics of the radiator system. The paper also reports on the several practical issues encountered during the experiments – issues that in different ways are barriers to the practical realization of demand response from E-MPC of hydronic space heating systems. This paper presents a two-stage framework for monitoring the decline of pipeline insulation and diagnosing leakage fault. The task of the first stage is to estimate the parameters of the pipeline network, so as to monitor the abnormal heat conduction data of pipelines, and use the estimation results to update the parameters of the pipeline model. The task of the second stage is to obtain the location and the water loss of after a leakage fault. In the framework, the tasks of the two stages are formulated into the problem of minimizing the divergence between the real system and the simulation system. And the problem is solved by the group search optimizer (GSO) algorithm with improved boundary search strategy in this paper. In the simulation tests, the framework is verified to be able to diagnose the faults. And in comparison with other heuristic algorithms, the GSO algorithm has the best ability to accurately diagnose the fault. A 5th generation district heating (5GDH) system consists of a low-temperature network used as a heat source for de-centralized heat pumps to serve heating demand. Until now, there is a lack of studies looking into the economic aspect of implementing the 5GDH concept. The performance characteristics, system dynamics, and economic feasibility of the 5GDH system are insufficiently investigated in cold climates. This paper aims to bridge the research gap by performing the techno-economic analysis of a 5GDH system using a case study based in Tallinn, Estonia. A detailed thermo-hydraulic simulation model is constructed in TRNSYS and Fluidit Heat. In addition, the uncertainty and sensitivities on the economic performance are analysed using Monte Carlo method implemented in Python. The study further analyses the effectiveness of using solar power technologies in reducing the cost of heating. For designed boundary conditions, the system can deliver heat at levelised cost of heating (LCOH) of 80 €/MWh. Integration of photovoltaic up to a limited capacity results in 1 % reduction when compared to the base case LCOH. The economic benefit of photovoltaic thermal is lower compared to photovoltaic. Numerous cost-optimal studies have been undertaken by EU member states to define minimum energy performance requirements for buildings within that member state in accordance with the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive. As few of these studies have examined the effect of heating and ventilation system parameters on life cycle cost (LCC) and energy use in detail, this paper analysed 84 HVAC solution-sets, including parameters for the heating supply system, heating distribution system and ventilation system, for a case study in Norway. The choice of heating supply system was the dominant parameter, with ground source heat pump solutions offering the lowest purchased energy use and LCC. Electric water heating and district heating systems had low capital costs which make these options more attractive to property developers looking for a good return on investment. Using an exhaust ventilation system with an exhaust air heat pump lowered LCC and capital costs for ground source heat pump and district heating systems but does not meet current Norwegian energy regulations. Despite using more energy, a constant setpoint schedule resulted in a lower LCC than a variable setpoint system due to the variation in hourly energy pricing and the dominant role of monthly pricing based on peak load. The choice of yearly heating strategy and heat emitter had a relatively small impact on energy use, capital cost and LCC. With all the parameters combined, there was variation within each heating system of up to 21 kWh/(m2∙year) in energy use, 78 Euro/m2 in capital cost and 236 Euro/m2 in LCC. Therefore, it is important that such system parameters are considered in cost-optimal assessments to give a fair comparison of HVAC systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The fifth-generation heating and cooling system (5GDHC) is a bidirectional low temperature network, which is a good solution for decarbonization and energy-saving in building cooling and heating. Because of its complex configurations, 5GDHC requires specific advanced control strategies for different scenarios. This paper aims to investigate 5GDHC with multiple sources in the business district in hot-summer and cold-winter zone through modelica simulation. The analysis and forecasting of district loads were used to study the design and operation strategies of 5GDHC. A suitable heat pump performance curve was presented for 5GDHC after comparing several heat pumps. And the larger the total flow in the network, the more beneficial it is for users. In this study, 5GDHC for the business district performed best when it adopted the strategy of continuous operation of the ground heat exchanger, nighttime operation of the surface-water coil, and supplemental cooling of the cooling tower upon it is needed, resulting in a 16.6% reduction in CO 2 emissions compared to the strategy that all sources operated continuously. Besides, carbon emission analysis showed the importance of balancing operational cost with carbon emission. The thermal process of heating buildings is characterized by the multivariable, nonlinear, and large time lag. Accurately predicting building heat loads is crucial for regulating building heating systems. However, the current black-box method of heat load prediction has challenges such as extensive data usage and weak integration with the building's heat transfer process. To address these challenges, a physics-guided long short-term memory (LSTM) model for dynamic heat load prediction in the next seven days based on data-driven and mechanism analysis was proposed. The data for the model were collected from in-situ measurement and numerical simulation. Specifically, the thermal mechanism was introduced to the training loss function of LSTM and the selection of input variables. The influence of the adaptive data time step on prediction accuracy was investigated. The main conclusions obtained from the current data in this paper are drawn as follows. 1) Refining solar radiation intensity calculation for each orientation reduced mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of heat load prediction results by 0.02%–1.8% compared to horizontal solar radiation intensity. 2) Improving the training loss function decreased MAPE of heat load prediction results by 0.04%–0.43% compared with the original loss function. 3) Adaptive data time step lowered the MAPE of heat load prediction results by 0.08%–1.8% compared with fixed time step. 4) Mean absolute errors corresponding to those three aspects decreased by 25 kJ–558 kJ, 6 kJ–157 kJ, and 41 kJ–1881 kJ. In the future, wider promotion and application of the prediction model will lead to better performance and be more beneficial to energy saving and carbon reduction of the heating system. The priority for reaching carbon neutral buildings by 2050 is to first increase energy efficiency in existing buildings by use of easily and widely applicable measures that are verified based on long-term field research. One such solution is a forecast control of heating systems, which can be quickly and easily integrated to existing weather based controls. However, there are still no long-term field evaluation and detailed analyses of the main features of such a system, which would provide a clear picture about the system's energetical and economical features and thus increase their wide application in existing buildings. This paper provides the data from a long term field evaluation of an innovative forecast control of heating systems (forHEAT), which can be easily installed (in less than 2 h) and integrated with existing installations in millions of existing buildings in Europe and throughout the world. The energy consumption for heating was evaluated in seven residential buildings and three public office buildings before and after the installation and use of the forecast control. The resulting energy savings averaged 13.4% in the residential and 10.7% in the public buildings located in continental European climate, with very cold winters. Concerning the building environment HVAC facilities, even if a great effort has been made in developing components and systems with high nominal efficiencies, less attention has been paid to the problem of system maintenance. The main objective of the thermoeconomic diagnosis is to detect possible anomalies and their location inside a component of the energy system. The second objective, and indeed the one to be achieved in this paper, is indicated as inverse problem. It is associated with the quantification of the effects of anomalies in terms of thermoeconomic quantities. Its rigorous application in building thermal installations has some difficulties relating to the strong interrelation between the different components and the fact that energy supply facilities are continuously changing with time. The way to deal with dynamic circumstances is thoroughly explored in this article. Likewise, this paper’s main goal is to demonstrate an application of two thermoeconomic diagnosis methodologies in the building sector, one based on the malfunction and dysfunction analysis and the other one based on the characteristic curves of the components. Energy use intensity in supermarkets is high compared to retail buildings due to the refrigeration needed for the preservation of chilled and frozen products. The modelling of their energy use and environmental conditions is difficult due to the interdependence of their subsystems such as refrigeration, heating/cooling, ventilation, lighting and requirements of products, store operation schedule and transient occupancy patterns. This paper reports the development of an EnergyPlus model calibrated with operational data for a frozen food supermarket in the UK. The developed model can predict hourly energy use with an average error of 2 kWh. The paper also presents monitored operational data indicating that energy use intensity is near the upper range of other supermarkets due to increased refrigeration load of 60% compared to 40% of typical supermarket and operation of fans because of required high ventilation rates. Environmental conditions were maintained within comfort requirements for staff and customers because closed frozen food cabinets are used. The developed model was used to investigate the interaction between the subsystems and building envelope to reduce energy use; a significant interdependence was found with the highest energy reduction (4%) when the HVAC is operating during trading hours only. HVAC systems in buildings are composed of many subcomponents which consume energy in huge amounts. In recent years, energy consumption becomes very important aspect due to the lack of energy resources and environmental reasons. In terms of energy consumption, the components of HVAC systems account for large portion of total energy used in buildings. Therefore optimization of energy consumption in HVAC applications is an essential requirement in terms of thermodynamic and economic point of views. Besides, the efforts for decreasing energy consumption turn into economic recovery. It also provides benefits for human health and cleaner environment. In this paper, as originality, thermodynamic and economic analyses of an existing social and cultural building which has a heating and cooling area of 8852 m 2 are presented by comparing of a conventional HVAC and a VRF system. A novel contribution is given to the open literature by comparing two systems with actual data measured from the existing system. The other originality is to apply and test a VRF system to a complex-structured building. This study is a rare one which contains insulation, heating and cooling accounts of a building together. In this paper, VRF system is modelled to the existing building for the comparison of the conventional HVAC system. Both systems have been compared in terms of heating and cooling capacity, initial, operation and maintenance costs. Recent simulation-based studies have indicated that Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) of space heating systems can exploit the thermal mass in residential buildings for demand response (DR) purposes in district heating systems. However, there is a lack of studies on residents' perception and acceptance of the fluctuating indoor air temperature behaviour inherent in EMPC of space heating. This paper reports on a case study featuring the residents of three one-story houses located in Denmark. The houses were equipped with technology enabling remote actuation of radiator thermostats and collection of various indoor environmental data. Four different temperature boost interventions mimicking the typical behaviour of EMPC of radiators were executed while a mixed-methods triangulation design, employing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, was used to collect subjective data. Data showed that residents accepted the behaviour but only after the benefits of the EMPC were explained. The acceptance was motivated by either the prospect of saving money, environmental benefits, or a combination of both. The results thereby indicate that explaining the benefits of EMPC is important if residents are to abandon their current preferences and practices in favour of an EMPC concept. The explanation should consider the diversity in current preferences, expectations, and level of technological pre-knowledge. Abstract Multi-apartment buildings comprise almost half of the European housing stock and are for the most part old and energy inefficient, making active retrofitting an important topic. The objective of this paper is to determine the profitability and optimal size of different technology portfolios for renewable building energy. A mixed-integer linear programming optimisation model is developed in Matlab with the objective of maximising the Net Present Value over a time horizon of 20 years. To examine multiple use cases, a modular approach is used for realising different multi-apartment building set-ups. Building-attached and building-integrated photovoltaic systems on different parts of the building skin already achieve break-even. Heat pumps, pellet and district heating can hardly compete with gas heating yet. However, heat pumps have synergy effects with PV systems, thus reinforcing their implementation, as does a tenant portfolio with a good correlation with the sunshine hours. The profitability gap between investment costs for passive building renovation and resulting energy cost savings is significant. However, it is the smallest for buildings with quality standards. In conclusion, governmental subsidies and financial incentives such as the true cost pricing of CO 2 emissions are necessary to trigger investments in reasonable combinations of passive and active retrofitting measures. Abstract Temporal mismatches between heat provided by a drain water heat recovery system, and heat consumption are, although often disregarded in literature, a crucial factor in assessing the feasibility of the former. Generally, the only available information for residences is the average monthly consumption. The probabilistic method described in this paper uses observations from 113 residences to predict daily and monthly consumption profiles, using monthly consumption as a starting point. These profiles were then used to study the operation of a drain water heat recovery system, but can also be used to assess the operation of other heating methods where the supply is not controlled, such as solar thermal. The operation of the drain water heat recovery systems was predicted based on a monitoring campaign at 3 residences, measuring wastewater temperature and flow at 5-minute intervals, for over a 1-year period. The performance of this system was assessed using the performance data of 26 commercially available heat pumps, with rated power below 7 kW. The method was applied to a theoretical average Irish residence, obtained through a Monte Carlo analysis on just under 700 000 Irish residences. The method highlighted the potential for a reduction in heating related greenhouse gas emissions by 7.6% to 22%. However, this increased heating costs by 120% to 130%. At current traditional heating prices, the DWHR system for a single residence is not financially competitive with traditional systems, due to its significant capital investment. Further research should examine combining waste water streams from different residences to provide a larger flow, and potentially a high recoverable energy volume, thus improving financial viability. Abstract Beyond the definition and measurement of energy poverty, which have mainly attracted research interest over the last decades, attention has recently begun to turn to a broader notion of energy vulnerability. So far, this has mostly been approached on a theoretical base, suggesting the incorporation of broader socio-economic aspects into the energy poverty framework. However, the quantitative measurement of energy vulnerability is still an unexplored field of research. In this paper, the "Vulnerability Index" is developed, which, based on stochastic analysis, quantifies the vulnerability of a population to the energy poverty ratio, compared to a reference population. Moreover, Sensitivity Analysis quantifies the particular contribution of various parameters to the problem, by determining their weighting factors. As case study, the vulnerability of Greek mountainous regions with respect to the country level was studied. The results showed that households living in mountainous regions are more vulnerable versus those of the whole country, at 89.7%. It was also found that energy policy should focus on raising incomes of mountainous population and, afterwards, on energy saving measures and reduction of heating cost in mountains. Abstract This article introduces a parameter estimation and state prediction technique called constrained dual Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) that can be used in model prediction controls (MPC) and fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) in building systems. The proposed method is an improvement over the existing nonlinear filter-based methods such as the joint EKF or Unscented Kalman Filter, which is widely adopted in previous building controls research. Case studies using both simulation and real measurements are conducted to demonstrate the proposed algorithm when used for a building thermal zone. Data from parametric simulations are used to test the thermal model's ability to capture parameter variations. Measured data from five identical offices is collected to test the performance of parameter estimates and state predictions under real-life operation. Overall, the proposed algorithm is 25% faster than a conventional EKF with improved numerical stability. It can also help mitigate numerical instabilities seen in previous EKF research. Abstract Understanding occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort is essential to defining the operational settings for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems in buildings. Due to the continuous impact of human and environmental factors, occupants’ thermal sensation and comfort level can change over time. Thus, to dynamically control the environment, thermal comfort should be monitored in real time. This paper presents a novel non-intrusive infrared thermography framework to estimate an occupant's thermal comfort level by measuring skin temperature collected from different facial regions using low-cost thermal cameras. Unlike existing methods that rely on placing sensors directly on humans for skin temperature measurement, the proposed framework is able to detect the presence of occupants, extract facial regions, measure skin temperature features, and interpret thermal comfort conditions with minimal interruption of the building occupants. The method is validated by collecting thermal comfort data from a total of twelve subjects under cooling, heating and steady-state experiments. The results demonstrate that ears, nose and cheeks are most indicative of thermal comfort and the proposed framework can be used to assess occupants’ thermal comfort with an average accuracy of 85%. A novel methodology for optimizing thermal storage for biomass boiler heating systems is presented in this paper. Biomass boiler heating systems have gradually gained popularity in residential, commercial, and large-scale district heating plants due to the lower carbon footprint of biomass energy. One unanswered question in this field was the size of the thermal energy storage (TES) tank with respect to different boiler capacities and different types of heat demand profiles. Different standards and recommendations (based only on boiler capacities) have been proposed by various organizations around the world with large deviations on the sizing of the TES tank, but without a clear technical basis for these recommendations. These inconsistencies impede the effective design and deployment of biomass boiler heating systems. This study used a dynamic process simulation system based on field data from a 25-kW wood pellet boiler with radiant floor heating. By running the simulation for different boiler capacities (N) and different types of heat demand profiles (i.e. low, medium, high, intermittent, and variable), the optimum TES tank volume can be estimated by evaluating the TES tank discharge efficiency, boiler on-time, boiler off-time, and maximum boiler output temperature. Linear correlations between optimum TES tank volume and boiler nominal capacity for different types of heat demand profiles were obtained. The results showed that the medium building heat demand (45% N) required the smallest TES tank volume while intermittent building demand requires the largest. High building demand (60% N) generates the highest TES tank discharge efficiency (up to 99%) but also requires large storage volume. From the economic point of view, it is recommended to size the thermal energy storage system such that the average building heat demand is around 45% of boiler nominal capacity. A critical element of assessing a building's suitability for Demand Side Response (DSR) is understanding its turndown potential to ensure that DSR participation will be financially viable. While research has been undertaken on site level DSR estimation methods, there is currently no research that compares the outcomes of these methods. This paper compares four non-domestic energy estimation methods used for understanding the DSR potential of electrical appliances in a building to provide insights about uncertainty levels based on input requirements. Each method is deployed to estimate the DSR potential of HVAC chiller assets at two UK hotels over two years. The results show the methods have a range of error levels from the highest Mean Average Percentage Error (MAPE) of 159% to the lowest MAPE of 39%. The input requirements followed a general trend of more complex informational inputs resulting in lower error values. The outcomes of this research enable users to make informed decisions in selecting DSR estimation methods based on information availability and acceptable estimation error levels. Urban building energy modeling (UBEM) is a valuable tool for analyzing the building stock. Many different model approaches have been proposed in recent years suggesting various ways of dealing with the challenges of UBEM; however, central for all modeling approaches is the need for informative input data about the building stock. The availability of data for urban-scale modeling is both country-specific, time-consuming to aggregate, and data access is often limited due to privacy constraints. In this paper, we present a hierarchical bottom-up model of the Danish residential building stock using public building data for predicting the annual heating energy consumption. For more than 10,000 randomly selected single-family dwellings, the annual energy consumption is modeled and validated for the city of Aarhus, Denmark. We found that approx. 50% of the energy use is explained using only four widely available building characteristics, which enables building-scale predictions with a mean absolute error of approx. 25%. In addition, for city-scale predictions, the regression-based model enables aggregated predictions with a mean bias error of less than ±2%. Housing Stock Energy Models (HSEMs) play a determinant role in the study of strategies to decarbonise the UK housing stock. Over the past three decades, a range of national HSEMs have been developed and deployed to estimate the energy demand of the 27 million dwellings that comprise the UK housing stock. However, despite ongoing improvements in the fidelity of both modelling strategies and calibration data, their longevity, usability and reliability have been compromised by a lack of modularity and openness in the underlying algorithms and calibration data sets. To address these shortfalls, a new open and modular platform for the dynamic simulation of national (in the first instance, the UK) housing stocks has been developed—the Energy Hub (EnHub) . This paper describes EnHub’s architecture, its underlying rationale, the datasets it employs, its current scope, examples of its application, and plans for its further development. In this we pay particular attention to the systematic identification of housing archetypes and their corresponding attributes to represent the stock. The scenarios we analyse in our initial applications of EnHub, based on these archetypes, focus on improvements to housing fabric, the efficiency of lights and appliances and of the related behavioural practices of their users. In this we consider a perfect uptake scenario and a conditional (partial) uptake scenario. Results from the disaggregation of energy use throughout the stock for the baseline case and for our scenarios indicate that improvements to solid wall and loft thermal performance are particularly effective, as are reductions in infiltration. Improvements in lights and appliances and reductions in the intensity of their use are largely counteracted by increases in heating demand. Housing archetypes that offer the greatest potential savings are apartments and detached dwellings, owing to their relatively high surface area to volume ratio; in particular for pre-1919 and inter-war epochs. In buildings, occupant behaviour is recognised as a major contributing factor to energy demand and in particular to heating consumption. To achieve thermal comfort within the heating season, people report to use heat in very different ways; for example behaviours include switching on the heating system, putting on warm clothes, drawing curtains, changing rooms, making a hot drink and using a hot water bottle. While research has focused on subjective accounts using interviews, diaries and questionnaires, little is known about the frequency and probability of these behaviours. Using a mixed-method approach, this paper reports on the results of a field study in dwellings using wearable and environmental sensors. The analysis investigates the probability of these behavioural responses as a function of seven independent variables; (1) external and (2) internal monitored temperature, (3) probability of heating being on or off, (4) time of the week, (5) time of the day, (6) the three categories of the predictive thermal comfort model, and (7) the three categories of the adaptive thermal comfort model. Results show that participants were more likely to increase their clothing and activity level as internal temperature decreased, although there was no significant change in activity level throughout the course of a day. Methodologically, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of different statistical tools in analysing occupants’ behaviours. Exploitation of shallow ground and its low-grade heat potential is fundamental to designing 5th generation district heating and cooling (DHC) networks. Horizontal ground-source heat pump (HGSHP) systems are a common way to utilize shallow geothermal energy. Realistic estimation and prediction of performance of a HGSHP system and shallow ground thermal behaviour should consider the whole system including building heating and cooling load, heat pump and ground heat exchanger, and the ground. This should be accompanied by realistic atmospheric and ground conditions. In this paper, a three-dimensional coupled thermal–hydraulic model with realistic boundary conditions adopting a whole system approach is presented. Dynamic heat pump coefficient of performance (COP) that depends on seasonal variation of heating/cooling demand and ground conditions are also considered. Model validations are conducted against experimental and analytical results in literatures. The model is applied for evaluating a HGSHP system to support development of a 5th generation DHC network on a potential site in the UK. Several influencing factors, such as ground moisture transfer, building thermal load mode, buried depth of ground loops, and initial ground temperature profile are studied to assess performance efficiency of the HGSHP system and evolution of ground thermal behaviour in response to heat extraction or rejection into the ground. The results show that 5% of the monthly total heat demand of the site could be met by the designed HGSHP system, consisting of 200 U-shaped ground loops buried at the depth of 3 m and pure water as the heat carrier. Overlooking the ground moisture transfer or hyperbolizing the ground saturation would overestimate the load-carrying capacity of the HGSHP system. The HGSHP system is more efficient with a higher heat pump COP under the heating and cooling mode than under the heating-only mode. Predicted performance of the HGSHP system improves with buried depth of the ground loops. The results also show that a 1 ℃ increase in the undisturbed ground temperature could suffice up to 8% of the monthly total heat demand of the site. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of the combined radiant floor and fan coil heating (RF-FCH) systems have improved the energy efficiency. In this study, the heating capacity and system operation state of the combined heating system were analyzed by experiments. The heating influencing factors of the combined heating system were investigated by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Pearson correlation coefficient. Based on the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) the optimal operation scheme was determined. The results show that during the operation of the combined heating system, the fan coil bears significant heating capacity. The fan coil heating capacity accounts for about 62.2%-70.4% of the total heating capacity. The radiant floor plays an increasingly important role in the combined heating system with the decreasing outdoor temperature. The radiant floor response time varies from 1.5 h to 5.4 h. The fan coil responds faster to outdoor temperature changes compared to the radiant floor. The control of the fan coil can be considered as the dominant factor for dealing with outdoor temperature changes. The operation status of the RF-FCH system is mainly affected by the outdoor temperature. The energy conversion efficiency of the RF-FCH system increases with the increase of outdoor temperature. The energy efficiency ratio (EER) of the RF-FCH system varies from 2.2 to 3.2. The Pearson correlation coefficient analysis results are consistent with two-way ANOVA. Compared with the radiant floor, the indoor temperature and system energy consumption were more influenced by fan coil supply water temperature. When the evaluation indexes of the TOPSIS method have the same weight, the scheme with the fan coil supply water temperature of 32 °C exhibits a better performance. Assessment methods to assess smart ventilation, in most countries focus only on comfort as criteria for the indoor air quality (IAQ) (Guyot et al., 2019). This is an issue as in doing so, pollutants that are known to cause harm to the human health are not taken into consideration while the exposure to VOCs will be elevated if the smart ventilation system lowers the ventilation flowrates to save energy (De Jonge & Laverge, 2021). This research addresses the question of what the impact of changing family sizes would be on the individual exposure to unhealthy pollutants for a smart ventilation system that only uses comfort related parameters to control the ventilation system. By introducing sources of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into a Modelica building energy and IAQ model of a typical Belgian apartment the occupant-dependent (CO 2 and RH) smart ventilation can be assessed for non-occupant dependent pollutants (VOCs). For three given smart ventilation systems, ten different households, with varying sizes and occupants are simulated. The results show that the presence of other family members influences the exposure to VOCs of an individual. One of the three smart ventilation systems is analyzed in detail, for this system, the minimum DALY count is 14.75 yr and maximum is 17.72 yr. They also show that the energy use of the building can be quite different although the only changing parameter in the simulation are the occupants. For the different simulated households, the minimum yearly energy use is 731kwh and maximum yearly energy use is 1319kwh. Similar results are obtained for the other two cases. Overall, the three smart ventilation systems show significant energy savings compared to the continuous nominal reference system but the expected impact on health increases. When designing a simulation-based assessment framework for residential ventilation, the occupant's behavior will always be an unknown factor to consider. The results indicate that in developing a simulations-based assessment framework, it is recommended to not assume just one household as in doing so, the system performance is not properly checked with regards to health and energy use during the lifetime of the system and the related expected variation in household types and sizes. The results in this paper confirm that a stochastic approach for assessing residential smart ventilation systems based on health-related pollutants (VOCs) should be investigated further. • A well-functioning space heating system can operate below 70 °C for 98% of the year and below 55 °C for 71% of the year. • The performance gap between measured and calculated energy use is widening across building age groups, with a clear increase for post-1980 buildings. • Pre-1980 buildings can operate with supply temperatures below 70 °C for 96–99% of the year and below 55 °C for 67–71% of the year. • Building envelope improvement, whilst recommended, is not a pre-requisite for using low-temperature supply in pre-1980 buildings. • Post-1980 buildings could have limitations in respect of using low-temperature heat under windy conditions. Decarbonising heat in the UK by 2050 will require the wider adoption of low-temperature heat. Current systems, largely relying on gas boilers, have design operating temperatures of 82/71 °C (supply/return) while new standards for 4th Generation District Heating are 55/25 °C. Local authorities must set-up strategies to get their buildings "Heat network ready" but this raises the question of the ability for existing buildings to use low-temperature heat. The aim and the novelty of this paper is to establish a relationship between an energy 'performance gap' in Scottish public buildings and their ability to use low-temperature heat. This performance gap has been evaluated for 121 non-domestic buildings, primarily schools, operated by The City of Edinburgh Council. Space heating system are assumed oversized by 10%. The results show that renovation of the building envelope, while highly desirable, is not a pre-requisite for using low-temperature heat in pre-1980 constructed buildings, which represent 64% of the stock. It also highlights that post-1980 buildings, predominantly utilising mechanical ventilation systems, demonstrate an increasing performance gap which could limit their ability to use reduced operating temperature, especially in windy conditions. Ground source heat pumps (GSHP) are one of the most efficient systems that offer a promising reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and energy use in buildings; however, the electrification of buildings' heating and cooling using GSHP is facing two critical challenges: its high initial cost and potential adverse impact on the electrical grid. In this paper, to address these challenges, two novel systems are proposed in which a battery, a water thermal storage tank, and a phase change material (PCM) thermal storage tank are integrated, in different configurations, with a conventional GSHP system. In these systems, the grid electricity during off-peak periods is stored as heat or electricity in the thermal or battery energy storage systems. The stored energy is then used in peak building load conditions to reduce the peak power demand on the grid. New numerical models are developed to quantify the proposed systems' benefits. Furthermore, these newly proposed systems are compared with the conventional systems used in Quebec, Canada, and three previously proposed worldwide systems. Simulations are conducted for different commonly used design practices, including undersized and adequately sized heat pump capacities. The results show that the proposed systems can reduce the peak power demand and total energy requirement of a conventional system by up to 65.4% (9.28 kW) and 67.0% (19,722 kWh), respectively. This paper investigates experimentally the cooling performance of a concept, where the radiant ceiling is suspended from the hollow-core concrete slab and by ventilation supply in the plenum and the perforations of the ceiling tiles, ventilation air is distributed without ducts and air terminals to the occupied zone. Literature has proven that this concept allows for more streamlined installation procedures and excellent performance in terms of thermal comfort and draught. The paper reports experimental results from a climate chamber, where the concept was tested under both steady-state and quasi-steady conditions. The steady-state conditions were chosen to map the cooling performance with different air change rates, and different ventilation and water supply temperatures. The results showed that for air change rates of 3 h−1 in the occupied zone and water supply temperature of 17 °C, the cooling output from the ceiling increased by 10 %. The concept was also tested under quasi-steady conditions in a 48 h cycle to quantify the thermal buffering effect of the exposed upper concrete slab when subjected to ventilation supply air. The effect amounted to 11–12 % increased cooling capacity at the end of the working day when the driving temperatures between air, water and thermal zones were at their maximum. Green roofs have been proposed for energy saving purposes in many countries with different climatic conditions. However, their cooling and heating potential strongly depends on the climate and building characteristics. In particular, the increase of the thermal capacity of green roofs compared to traditional roofs, if not controlled with insulation, may lead to higher cooling and heating loads. This paper discusses the energy saving potential of green roofs adopting a variable insulation strategy. A system consisting of a plenum located between a green roof and the room underneath and a sensor-operated fan that couples (or decouples) the green roof mass with the indoor environment was developed. The fan is activated and stopped using temperature based rules; the plenum is ventilated only when the fan works, creating a variable insulation system. Four cells with an insulated traditional roof, a non-insulated green roof, an insulated green roof, and a green roof with the variable insulation system have been tested in a hot and dry climate with mild winters over several years. This paper compares and discusses different plenum control algorithms. Results are particularly promising because the variable insulating system proved to adjust the thermal capacity of the roof effectively. In summer, the non-insulated green roof and the green roof with variable insulation system achieved the lowest indoor temperature; in winter, the insulated traditional roof and the variable insulation green roof system achieved the highest indoor temperatures. Global warming has drawn great attention in recent years because of its large impact on many aspects of the environment and human activities in buildings. One area directly affected by climate change is the energy consumption for heating and cooling. To quantify the impact, this study used the HadCM3 Global Circulation Model (GCM) to generate weather data for future typical meteorological years, such as 2020, 2050, and 2080, for 15 cities in the U.S. based on three CO 2 emission scenarios. The method was validated by comparing the projected TMY3 data using HadCM3 with the actual TMY3 data. By morphing method, the weather data was downscaled to hourly data for use in building energy simulations by EnergyPlus. Two types of residential buildings and seven types of commercial buildings were simulated for each of the 15 cities. This paper is the first to systematically study the climate change impact on various types of residential and commercial buildings in all seven climate zones in the U.S. through EnergyPlus simulations and provide weighted averaged results for national-wide building stock. We also identified geographical dependency of the impact of climate change on future energy uses. There would be a net increase in source energy consumption by the 2080s for climate zones 1–4 and net decrease in climate zones 6–7 based on the HadCM3 weather projection. Furthermore, this paper investigated natural ventilation performance in San Francisco, San Diego, and Seattle with improved natural ventilation model. We found that by the 2080s passive cooling would not be suitable for San Diego because of global warming, but it would still be acceptable for San Francisco and Seattle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polycarbonate panels could be considered as a suitable and cheap solution for walls, roofs, and sheds in non-residential buildings and, at the same time, granular silica aerogel is one of the most promising nano-materials for energy saving in buildings. In the paper, three types of advanced multiwall PC panels (thickness 16, 25, and 40 mm) with translucent granular aerogel were investigated by experimental (thermal and optical) and numerical characterization. By comparing thermal performance of air and aerogel-filled PC systems, it can be noticed that the impact of the aerogel is remarkable: the reduction in U-value is 46%-68%, depending on the aerogel layer thickness. U-value is 1.4 W/m 2 K for the 16 mm thickness sample and it is 0.6 W/m 2 K when the thickness increases up to 40 mm. The systems keep their performance in horizontal position, when they are used as roofs. Light transmittance is 0.61 and 0.42 for 16 mm and 40 mm respectively and the reduction with respect to air-filled panels is acceptable (15%) for 16 mm and significant (40%) for 40 mm thickness. The aerogel has also a remarkable impact on the reflectance spectrum , especially between 400 and 1400 nm. The solar factor is 0.58 for 25 mm thickness, quite similar to the low-e glazing one. Finally, energy simulations for a case study showed that aerogel-filled PC systems outperform conventional double glazing systems both for heating and cooling energy demands. However, when compared to low-e glazings, the benefits of the translucent material (also considering the highest thickness) in the interspace are lower for heating and negligible for cooling energy demands. The aerogel-filled polycarbonate systems could be a valid solution for non-residential buildings, enhancing the thermal performance and the light control of the building envelope, especially when they are used as roofs. The very low heating load of deep renovated buildings following standards such as EnerPHit, and the limited space in renovation create the need for compact heating systems. An innovative heating and ventilation system - consisting of an exhaust air to supply air heat pump combined with a heat recovery ventilation unit, both integrated into a prefabricated timber frame façade - was developed and installed in a flat during the renovation of a multi-family house in Ludwigsburg, Germany. The system and the flat were monitored for the complete heating season 2016/2017. This paper presents: (a) an analysis of the monitoring data, (b) the development and validation of the models of the system and the flat, and (c) the results of the dynamic simulations that were performed for further system optimisation. Inside the flat, good thermal comfort and indoor air quality conditions were achieved. The monitored SPF of the system was 2.8. Simulation results showed that with the optimised system and control, there can be an electricity savings of 25%. The developed system has the potential to be cost-effective due to prefabrication and low heating capacity. Thermal energy storage (TES) offers various opportunities in the design of renewable energy systems. Thermochemical heat storage has gained popularity among researches because of higher energy density and lower heat loss compared to sensible and latent heat storage. On the other side solar energy has been recognized as one of the renewable energy sources with the most potential. This paper reviews thermochemical heat storage technologies and systems with emphasis on systems involving solar energy utilization in buildings. With the gradual increase of building energy consumption in recent years, the application of phase change energy storage materials in buildings has become the focus of researches. Phase change material (PCM) embedded in the envelope can increase the building inertia to keep the temperature stable. It can also store energy and release energy when needed. In this paper, the system of PCM radiant floor combined with PCM wall attached with sunspace was established. The thermal characteristics and the energy consumption of the building are studied through analyzing the data from the experimental investigation including the temperature and the heat flux. Two different buildings were built between the PCM room and the conventional room with the same dimension and building. The main test conditions are divided into passive and active control stages by comparing the air temperatures, envelope temperatures, phase transition temperatures, heat fluxes and power consumptions between the two rooms. It is concluded that the average room temperature of the experimental room is 7.15 °C higher than that of the conventional room in the passive energy storage stage. While the average energy-saving rate of PCM room was 54.27% compared with the conventional room in the active control stage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

District heating system brings with it the problem of achieving a fair billing service for heating of apartment buildings in the case of uneven temperature in them. The problem is most pronounced when the individual apartments are completely excluded from the heating system of the building. The model of an existing building with 24 apartments was simulated in the software EnergyPlus, for different characteristics of the thermal envelope and different conditions of use, when the apartment with the lowest energy consumption is excluded from the heating system. It was simulated the exclusion of this apartment in which people are present and the lights and electrical appliances are turned on and in which there is no presence of people and electricity consumption (the apartment is empty). As a measure of energy flow between unheated and adjacent apartments, the parameter “stolen” energy is defined. The results of the conducted simulations show that the stolen energy is reduced by the exterior and interior insulation of the building. In this paper, data on energy flow when there is interior insulation in apartments, in particular according to the current regulations in Serbia, are especially analyzed. The results show that, depending on the case and scenario, the stolen energy ranges from 27.23 to 7.97 kWh/m 2 . Thermal energy storage (TES) systems with phase change materials (PCMs) as a known energy storage technology have a high potential for increasing the energy efficiency of buildings. In fact, the use of PCMs with various approaches, either active or passive, in the building helps to maintain the temperature in the thermal comfort range for occupants through decreasing the temperature swings, and lower energy consumption by the load reduction/shifting. Due to the significance of this issue, many research works have been carried out on the application of PCMs in buildings. In this study, the experimental works in the fields of PCMs in buildings are taken into account. The papers are classified based on heating, cooling, and air-conditioning. Besides these, the applications of nano-PCMs in buildings are reviewed. According to what has been carried out up to now, the gaps are identified and analyzed for preparing useful suggestions for future works. The temporal fluctuation of solar energy resources often require the utilization of thermal energy storage to increase the level of solar energy. Solar energy systems that are used to meet the heating demands of buildings can be implemented in a variety of system configurations, ranging from energy production and storage at the building-level, to centrally located production and storage components coupled with a district-heating network. In this paper, quasi-steady state simulation models are used to evaluate the impact that different design configurations of decentralized and centralized solar thermal systems (with short- and long-term storage) have on the overall economic cost of the energy provision and the degree of solar energy utilization. A suburban neighbourhood in Switzerland consisting of 11 buildings is selected as a case study. Simulation results suggest that building-level long-term storage configurations out perform all other system configurations in terms of solar fraction and system efficiencies for the given case study. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the location of the thermal storage and the separation of short- and long-term storage are crucial issues that affect the performance of building-level renewable energy sources, and thus merit further investigation. During the master planning of neighbourhoods, design decisions related to the urban layout and typology affect the building form and availability of solar radiation considerably. The influence of those decisions on the energy demand for heating is often neglected however because appropriate energy simulation tools are lacking. This paper proposes a simple and accurate design tool to assess the solar gains and heating energy demand in buildings during the master planning phase of neighbourhoods. Detailed information on building geometry, constituting building elements and solar obstructions, is extracted from a 3D neighbourhood model using a plugin implemented in the modelling software SketchUp. This information is used to assess the heating energy demand of the buildings in the neighbourhood based on the dynamic Equivalent Heating Degree Day (dEHDD) method. Furthermore, the associated financial and environmental impacts are calculated based on an integrated life cycle approach, combining Life Cycle Costing (LCC) and Environmental Life Cycle Assessment (E-LCA) respectively. The design tool proposed is implemented for the Belgian context and used to analyse a number of schematic residential neighbourhood models with diverse built densities. The analysis reveals substantial differences in heating energy demand, life cycle financial and environmental costs. Neighbourhoods with a high built density and compact building types have a lower heating energy demand with potential reductions of up to 40% compared to neighbourhoods with a low built density and detached building types. Although the inverter air-source heat pump (IASHP) and composite systems have a characteristic of energy conversion, the design of IASHP and the application of IASHP assisted with additional heat sources are absent based on the relationship between the demand side and supply side. Therefore, this paper proposes a heating load decomposition method to design IASHP with an auxiliary heat source system to offer users heating in severe cold regions. Specifically, the heating load decomposition method divides the heating load of the civil building into three regions by seeking heating energy balance points. It can get an optimal heating energy balance point with the best HSPF and an optimal design heating energy balance point with the best evaluating parameter. On these grounds, we produce an IASHP prototype. The experimental results confirm the superiority of the heating load decomposition method. Compared to the traditional design method, it improves by 6.5%-12.6% of heating capacity and 2.3%-17.4% of COP of IASHP porotype. Besides, the heating performance of IASHP assisted with an electric heating system selected by an optimal heating energy balance point is better than that of an independent IASHP heating system.
