Abstract The identification of heating load patterns, also known as load profiles, is of vital importance to effective management and operation of district heating system (DHS). Clustering algorithms have been successfully applied in identifying heating load patterns. In this paper, we propose that the heating load patterns should be analyzed more specifically, and Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) clustering is selected to extract sub-patterns. The novelty of this paper is that a new GMM clustering is applied to identify temperature related sub-pattern and people behavior related sub-pattern, and the clustering result is further utilized to improve the accuracy of prediction models. An energy station in Tianjin is used as case studies and four typical operation patterns are found with their characteristic of occur time and energy signature, which are defined as working pattern, on-duty pattern, daytime–nighttime pattern and nighttime–daytime pattern. The results reveal that this proposed method can make an in-depth identification of heating load patterns and also proves that the prediction accuracies of regression and artificial intelligence model are significantly improved by utilizing the GMM clustering results. Abstract In this paper, a new method entitled "BBEE (Building Blocks Energy Estimation)" for estimating energy performance at the district level is proposed. It consists of two branches, namely the BBEE algorithm and an energy database of a typical zone. This method is used to keep architects and urban planners informed of the energy performance of their design by clustering zones and looking up corresponding energy intensities from the database. Because the related energy databases are preexisting, energy performance modeling and simulation are not required from the user. On the other hand, the database is set up and continuously replenished by parameterization simulations with a basic model of typical zones. This task was separated from the estimation process and operated by experts, which shortened the process and reduced modeling errors. As a case study, an urban district with eight buildings was estimated under three climate conditions separately following the proposed BBEE method. Results were compared with the full-model simulation using a simulation tool called DeST. The difference in annual heating demand between estimation and simulation was reported as less than 6% in all three cases. The potential applications and limitations of the proposed BBEE method are discussed at the end of this paper. Although further improvements are still required, the new estimation method could be helpful for energy performance estimation at the district level at the early stage of design. Highlight • New on/off controller for residential applications validated using minute-level field data. • On/off controller improves the HVAC accuracy around 19% in terms of NMBE. • On/off cycling makes the operation and associated energy use more realistic. Abstract Heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems are sized using design conditions, conditions that occur only a small percentage of time each year. As a result, HVAC systems frequently operate at part-load conditions since their capacity is larger than necessary except in the most extreme weather conditions. Most HVAC systems for residential and small commercial buildings in the U.S. use on/off controls, however, most energy modeling software tools do not simulate the on/off nature of this type of HVAC controls. This paper presents the development and validation of an on/off controller for residential applications in EnergyPlus using a custom EMS (energy management system). This controller is validated using minute-level field data collected for a house located in Sacramento, California with simulated occupancy and internal loads. The results obtained from EnergyPlus with and without the use of the developed on/off controller are also compared. The application of the developed on/off controller improves the HVAC energy use results accuracy around 19% in terms of the Normalized Mean Bias Error (NMBE) at the one-minute level compared to the results without the application of the on/off controller. It also makes the nature of operation and associated energy use signal of the HVAC system more realistic in terms of the on/off nature of the residential direct expansion coils. Furthermore, in this paper, the accuracy improvement of the results dominated by the internal loads is investigated by applying the one-minute schedule compared to the usual hourly schedules for the internal thermal loads. Abstract The implementation, in Building Performance Simulations (BPS) tools, of robust models capable of simulating the thermophysical behaviour of a Phase Change Material (PCM) represents a fundamental step for an appropriate thermal evaluation of buildings that adopt PCM-enhanced envelope components. Reliable and robust measuring procedures are essential, at a material and component level, to provide experimental data for the empirical validation of software tools. The traditional laboratory tests that are generally used for the validation of models present some limitations, because PCMs are usually subjected to conditions that may be very different from the real boundary conditions of the building components in which PCMs are applied. Furthermore, in many experimental full-scale mockups, the relatively small quantity of installed PCM and the combination of several thermal phenomena do not allow software tools to be tested in a reliable way. In this paper, an experimental procedure, based on a modified Heat Flow Meter Apparatus, has been developed to test the behaviour of PCM-enhanced components; the procedure, which is based on the measurement of the sinusoidal response, has been set up to provide data for the comparison and testing of numerical models and of BPS tools. Moreover, general indications and guidelines are provided to solve some issues related to building specimens that contain bulk PCM in order to obtain a more accurate measurement of their performance. The experimental results presented in this paper were obtained from two different bulk PCMs (organic and inorganic). It was found that it is important to evaluate different PCM typologies and different thermophysical boundary conditions, including partial and full phase transitions, to test simulation codes that implement PCM modelling functions. In fact, some phenomena, such as hysteresis and subcooling effects are more evident when partial phase transition takes place. The results related to the characterization of the thermal conductivity of a paraffin-based PCM have shown a significant increase (up to 42%) of the equivalent thermal conductivity from a solid to a liquid state, with an upward heat flux, thus highlighting that further investigations and improvements are needed to measure the equivalent thermal conductivity in the different PCM phases. This paper reviews experimental studies regarding local radiant heating systems considering thermal sensation and comfort. These systems can heat body directly, often with a big view factor toward the body. They do not necessarily heat the air and environment, leading to lower energy consumption. Other types of heating systems combined with local radiant heating systems are also reviewed in this paper. According to reviewed studies, localized methods improved thermal comfort, and the same thermal sensation could be achieved in lower air temperatures, especially when using local radiant heating systems. Solar-based radiant heating systems represent a sustainable, and relatively low-cost, technology to raise the temperature of the interior thermal mass of our buildings. Through the use of direct absorption solar thermal collectors, the same working fluid which absorbs the solar energy can be used to transfer the energy for storage in the thermal mass of the structure using a network of pipes embedded in concrete floors. This study investigates a promising working fluid which can be used in such systems – one which is based on multi-walled carbon-nanotubes suspended in normal base fluids. A major stumbling block affecting the wide spread use of carbon-nanotube nanofluids is their low dispersion stability at elevated temperatures, which significantly reduces the absorption capabilities of the nanofluids and could lead to clogging of the pumps used to circulate the fluids. In this paper, we report on a scalable UV-ozone (UVO) treatment technique to produce highly stable dispersions for the elevated temperatures experienced by working fluids in radiant heating systems. To probe suitability of UVO treated multi-walled carbon-nanotube (MWCNTs) for solar-assisted radiant heating systems, this paper investigates the effects of exposure time and temperature on stability, optical absorbance properties, the extent of functionalisation, and the photothermal conversion performance of UVO-treated MWCNT nanofluids. No agglomeration or degradation of the MWCNTs was observed at elevated temperatures (up to 150   °C), highlighting the stability of proposed nanofluids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, the problem of dispatching the operation of a distribution feeder comprising a set of heterogeneous resources is investigated. The main objective is to track a power trajectory, called the dispatch plan , which is computed the day before the beginning of operation. In this paper, we propose a method to optimally compute the dispatch plan so as to optimize the operation of the feeder while making sure to allocate enough local reserves to absorb deviations of the realizations. Indeed, during real-time operation, due to the stochasticity of part of the resources in the feeder portfolio, tracking errors need to be absorbed in order to track the committed dispatch plan. This is achieved by modulating the power consumption of a utility-scale battery energy storage system and of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system of a commercial controllable building. To this end, a hierarchical controller is designed to coordinate these two controllable entities while requiring a minimal communication infrastructure. Due to the inherent different response times of these systems, the power injection of the electrical battery is controlled at a sub-minute time-scale so as to absorb high-frequency tracking errors and, therefore, deliver the dispatch service. At a slower time-scale, the controllable building is controlled to maintain the state of charge for the electrical battery at a scheduled level by means of a model predictive controller. The model predictive controller is designed in order to account for both comfort and operational constraints of the controllable building, as well as power limits for the electrical storage. The effectiveness of the proposed control framework is demonstrated by means of both an extensive simulation analysis, as well as a set of 12 full day experimental results on the 20 kV distribution feeder in the campus of the Swiss institute of technology in Lausanne, that is comprised of: 1) A set of uncontrollable resources represented by five office buildings (350 kWp) and a roof-top photovoltaic installation (90 kWp), 2) a set of controllable resources, namely, a grid-connected electrical storage (720 kVA–500 kWh), and a fully-occupied multi-zone office building (45 kWp). Cleaner end-uses of energy, including electrified heating, represent a cornerstone of a decarbonised energy transition. On the other hand, many governments have adopted measures to mitigate energy poverty and facilitate access to modern energy services, including heating. Both objectives may be interrelated, since energy poor people are less likely to use cleaner (and costlier) heating fuels. This paper analyses the impact of energy poverty on the decision to use different heating sources and identifies whether the events of COVID and the Ukraine war have affected this decision. Thus, a multinomial probit model is estimated using information from a large database of Spanish households in 2019, 2021 and 2022. The results show that being energy poor increases the probability to use carbon-intensive energy sources for heating compared to electricity, and that COVID and the war in Ukraine have affected this relationship. The increase in energy poverty over those years has negatively affected the decarbonisation goal with respect to heating choices. The influence of those events on the probability to use electric heating depends on some household and dwelling features. Therefore, mitigating energy poverty increases the welfare of energy poor people while supporting the choice of cleaner heating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In times of great transition of the European construction sector to energy efficient and nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB), a market observation containing qualitative and quantitative indications should help to fill out some of the current gaps concerning the EU 2020 carbon targets. Next to the economic challenges, there are equally important factors that hinder renovating the existing residential building stock and adding newly constructed high performance buildings. Under these circumstances this paper summarises the findings of a cross-comparative study of the societal and technical barriers of nZEB implementation in 7 Southern European countries. The study analyses the present situation and provides an overview on future prospects for nZEB in Southern Europe. The result presents an overview of challenges and provides recommendations based on available empirical evidence to further lower those barriers in the European construction sector. The paper finds that the most Southern European countries are poorly prepared for nZEB implementation and especially to the challenge/opportunity of retrofitting existing buildings. Creating a common approach to further develop nZEB targets, concepts and definitions in synergy with the climatic, societal and technical state of progress in Southern Europe is essential. Concerning the building environment HVAC facilities, even if a great effort has been made in developing components and systems with high nominal efficiencies, less attention has been paid to the problem of system maintenance. The main objective of the thermoeconomic diagnosis is to detect possible anomalies and their location inside a component of the energy system. The second objective, and indeed the one to be achieved in this paper, is indicated as inverse problem. It is associated with the quantification of the effects of anomalies in terms of thermoeconomic quantities. Its rigorous application in building thermal installations has some difficulties relating to the strong interrelation between the different components and the fact that energy supply facilities are continuously changing with time. The way to deal with dynamic circumstances is thoroughly explored in this article. Likewise, this paper’s main goal is to demonstrate an application of two thermoeconomic diagnosis methodologies in the building sector, one based on the malfunction and dysfunction analysis and the other one based on the characteristic curves of the components. Energy use intensity in supermarkets is high compared to retail buildings due to the refrigeration needed for the preservation of chilled and frozen products. The modelling of their energy use and environmental conditions is difficult due to the interdependence of their subsystems such as refrigeration, heating/cooling, ventilation, lighting and requirements of products, store operation schedule and transient occupancy patterns. This paper reports the development of an EnergyPlus model calibrated with operational data for a frozen food supermarket in the UK. The developed model can predict hourly energy use with an average error of 2 kWh. The paper also presents monitored operational data indicating that energy use intensity is near the upper range of other supermarkets due to increased refrigeration load of 60% compared to 40% of typical supermarket and operation of fans because of required high ventilation rates. Environmental conditions were maintained within comfort requirements for staff and customers because closed frozen food cabinets are used. The developed model was used to investigate the interaction between the subsystems and building envelope to reduce energy use; a significant interdependence was found with the highest energy reduction (4%) when the HVAC is operating during trading hours only. HVAC systems in buildings are composed of many subcomponents which consume energy in huge amounts. In recent years, energy consumption becomes very important aspect due to the lack of energy resources and environmental reasons. In terms of energy consumption, the components of HVAC systems account for large portion of total energy used in buildings. Therefore optimization of energy consumption in HVAC applications is an essential requirement in terms of thermodynamic and economic point of views. Besides, the efforts for decreasing energy consumption turn into economic recovery. It also provides benefits for human health and cleaner environment. In this paper, as originality, thermodynamic and economic analyses of an existing social and cultural building which has a heating and cooling area of 8852 m 2 are presented by comparing of a conventional HVAC and a VRF system. A novel contribution is given to the open literature by comparing two systems with actual data measured from the existing system. The other originality is to apply and test a VRF system to a complex-structured building. This study is a rare one which contains insulation, heating and cooling accounts of a building together. In this paper, VRF system is modelled to the existing building for the comparison of the conventional HVAC system. Both systems have been compared in terms of heating and cooling capacity, initial, operation and maintenance costs. It is found that the VRF system is more economic and efficient such that the VRF system is found to have 44% cost profit when compared with the conventional HVAC system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• Load shifting experiments were performed in a single-family inhabited house. • Room radiators were controlled with variable set-point schedules. • Heat consumption was successfully shifted from the controlled rooms. • The total load shifting on a building level was limited. • A list of challenges for developing E-MPC in real buildings was identified. Recent simulation-based studies have indicated that load shifting using Economic Model Predictive Control (E-MPC) of radiators for residential space heating can be utilized for demand response purposes in energy systems. However, there is a lack of studies on whether this load shift potential can be realized in real, inhabited buildings. This paper reports on a field experiment aiming at realizing load shifting of space heating in a single-family house with a hydronic radiator system connected to the local district heating. Radiators in a limited number of 'active' rooms were controlled using set-point schedules mimicking the typical behavior of E-MPC. The results indicate that it was possible to load shift heating consumption in the 'active' rooms but that the load shift for the building as a whole was limited due to the hydronics of the radiator system. The paper also reports on the several practical issues encountered during the experiments – issues that in different ways are barriers to the practical realization of demand response from E-MPC of hydronic space heating systems. This paper presents a two-stage framework for monitoring the decline of pipeline insulation and diagnosing leakage fault. The task of the first stage is to estimate the parameters of the pipeline network, so as to monitor the abnormal heat conduction data of pipelines, and use the estimation results to update the parameters of the pipeline model. The task of the second stage is to obtain the location and the water loss of after a leakage fault. In the framework, the tasks of the two stages are formulated into the problem of minimizing the divergence between the real system and the simulation system. And the problem is solved by the group search optimizer (GSO) algorithm with improved boundary search strategy in this paper. In the simulation tests, the framework is verified to be able to diagnose the faults. And in comparison with other heuristic algorithms, the GSO algorithm has the best ability to accurately diagnose the fault. Efficient cooling of the trans-critical CO 2 vapor compression cycle to improve system performance is a crucial research topic. This paper proposes an innovative approach called distribution compression (DC) to achieve the same effect as subcooling in a trans-critical CO 2 thermodynamic cycle. In the DC system, the trans-critical CO 2 at the gas cooler outlet is no longer further cooled but subjected to a secondary pressure boost and releases heat in ordinary heat sink conditions as in the gas cooler. Thermodynamics calculated the change in performance of the DC system under different working conditions with different secondary boost ratios. The optimal secondary boost ratio related to evaporation and gas cooler outlet temperatures under optimal discharge pressure based on the baseline system was obtained. The results show that compared with the baseline system, the DC system can effectively improve the system performance, and the maximum refrigeration COP increase is between 8.2 % ∼ 10.76 %, and the maximum heating COP increase is between 5.37 % ∼ 6.34 %. The cooling or heating capacity increase can reach up to about 26 %. The ideal secondary boost ratio in a DC system is not highly demanding, and the increased input power for the second input power for the secondary boost will not exceed 20 % relative to the baseline system. Comparing the COP of the DC system over current systems that only use a single subcooling technology still shows advantages. [Display omitted] • This paper summaries the present regulations and policies concerning M−TES (Mobilized thermal energy storage) in China. • The policies are analyzed based on the aspects including facility manufacture and operation, road transportation, and financial guidance. • The results can provide references for the government or policy makers to promote the development and safe operation of M−TES in China. Mobilized thermal energy storage (M−TES) is a promising technology to transport heat without the limitation of pipelines, therefore suitable for collecting distributed renewable or recovered resources. In particular, the M−TES can be flexibly used for the emergency heating in the COVID-19 era. Though the M−TES has been commercializing in China, there is not any specific regulation or standard for M−TES systems. Therefore, this paper summarizes and discusses the existing regulations and policies concerning M−TES in the aspects of facility manufacture and operation, road transportation, and financial support and guidance. Furthermore, the suggestions were presented including necessary consensus on the development of M−TES among different departments, consideration of local conditions when drafting or revising regulations and policies, sufficient investment, or subsidy on the R&D of M−TES, and qualification recognition of M−TES companies and staffs. Recent simulation-based studies have indicated that Economic Model Predictive Control (EMPC) of space heating systems can exploit the thermal mass in residential buildings for demand response (DR) purposes in district heating systems. However, there is a lack of studies on residents' perception and acceptance of the fluctuating indoor air temperature behaviour inherent in EMPC of space heating. This paper reports on a case study featuring the residents of three one-story houses located in Denmark. The houses were equipped with technology enabling remote actuation of radiator thermostats and collection of various indoor environmental data. Four different temperature boost interventions mimicking the typical behaviour of EMPC of radiators were executed while a mixed-methods triangulation design, employing questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, was used to collect subjective data. Data showed that residents accepted the behaviour but only after the benefits of the EMPC were explained. The acceptance was motivated by either the prospect of saving money, environmental benefits, or a combination of both. The results thereby indicate that explaining the benefits of EMPC is important if residents are to abandon their current preferences and practices in favour of an EMPC concept. The explanation should consider the diversity in current preferences, expectations, and level of technological pre-knowledge. In buildings, occupant behaviour is recognised as a major contributing factor to energy demand and in particular to heating consumption. To achieve thermal comfort within the heating season, people report to use heat in very different ways; for example behaviours include switching on the heating system, putting on warm clothes, drawing curtains, changing rooms, making a hot drink and using a hot water bottle. While research has focused on subjective accounts using interviews, diaries and questionnaires, little is known about the frequency and probability of these behaviours. Using a mixed-method approach, this paper reports on the results of a field study in dwellings using wearable and environmental sensors. The analysis investigates the probability of these behavioural responses as a function of seven independent variables; (1) external and (2) internal monitored temperature, (3) probability of heating being on or off, (4) time of the week, (5) time of the day, (6) the three categories of the predictive thermal comfort model, and (7) the three categories of the adaptive thermal comfort model. Results show that participants were more likely to increase their clothing and activity level as internal temperature decreased, although there was no significant change in activity level throughout the course of a day. Methodologically, this paper demonstrates the effectiveness of different statistical tools in analysing occupants’ behaviours. • A model for calculating the thermal carrying capacity of water bodies was established. • The impact of meteorological parameters on water bodies was analysed. • Water source heat pumps failing to meet building heat demand in winter is analysed. • Solar radiation is the main source of thermal regeneration of water bodies. • Increasing the water depth or area can raise the thermal heat load-carrying capacity. Meteorological parameter changes not only affect the heat load-carrying capacity of the surface water, but also affect the heat load demand of the building, thus changing the heat load matching between the water source heat pump system and the users. In order to study the climatic adaptation of the heat load-carrying capacity, this paper establishes an analytical model of the water body's heat load-carrying capacity and the building's heat load with the solar radiation intensity, the change of the water body and the heat extraction time as variables. Experimental and simulation studies on the heat load-carrying capacity of lake water were carried out under the winter climate conditions in hot summer and cold winter areas. The results show that increasing the depth or area of the lake can improve the heat load-carrying capacity. Solar radiation is an important factor affecting the temperature of surface water body, the stronger the solar radiation the greater the temperature rise of the water body. Changes in outdoor air temperature have a significant impact on water temperature, and a sudden drop in outdoor air temperature will result in a sharp drop in water temperature. When the water body area was 3000 m2 and 50000 m2, the maximum integrated temperature drop of the water body was 15.0℃ and 9.7℃, which was 2.02 and 4.85 times of the temperature drop of heat extraction, respectively. Reduced heat load-carrying capacity of the surface water body or decreased COP of the heat pump is an important reason why the surface water source heat pump heat supply fails to meet the user's heat demand in winter. This paper investigates experimentally the cooling performance of a concept, where the radiant ceiling is suspended from the hollow-core concrete slab and by ventilation supply in the plenum and the perforations of the ceiling tiles, ventilation air is distributed without ducts and air terminals to the occupied zone. Literature has proven that this concept allows for more streamlined installation procedures and excellent performance in terms of thermal comfort and draught. The paper reports experimental results from a climate chamber, where the concept was tested under both steady-state and quasi-steady conditions. The steady-state conditions were chosen to map the cooling performance with different air change rates, and different ventilation and water supply temperatures. The results showed that for air change rates of 3 h−1 in the occupied zone and water supply temperature of 17 °C, the cooling output from the ceiling increased by 10 %. The concept was also tested under quasi-steady conditions in a 48 h cycle to quantify the thermal buffering effect of the exposed upper concrete slab when subjected to ventilation supply air. The effect amounted to 11–12 % increased cooling capacity at the end of the working day when the driving temperatures between air, water and thermal zones were at their maximum. Green roofs have been proposed for energy saving purposes in many countries with different climatic conditions. However, their cooling and heating potential strongly depends on the climate and building characteristics. In particular, the increase of the thermal capacity of green roofs compared to traditional roofs, if not controlled with insulation, may lead to higher cooling and heating loads. This paper discusses the energy saving potential of green roofs adopting a variable insulation strategy. A system consisting of a plenum located between a green roof and the room underneath and a sensor-operated fan that couples (or decouples) the green roof mass with the indoor environment was developed. The fan is activated and stopped using temperature based rules; the plenum is ventilated only when the fan works, creating a variable insulation system. Four cells with an insulated traditional roof, a non-insulated green roof, an insulated green roof, and a green roof with the variable insulation system have been tested in a hot and dry climate with mild winters over several years. This paper compares and discusses different plenum control algorithms. Results are particularly promising because the variable insulating system proved to adjust the thermal capacity of the roof effectively. In summer, the non-insulated green roof and the green roof with variable insulation system achieved the lowest indoor temperature; in winter, the insulated traditional roof and the variable insulation green roof system achieved the highest indoor temperatures. Global warming has drawn great attention in recent years because of its large impact on many aspects of the environment and human activities in buildings. One area directly affected by climate change is the energy consumption for heating and cooling. To quantify the impact, this study used the HadCM3 Global Circulation Model (GCM) to generate weather data for future typical meteorological years, such as 2020, 2050, and 2080, for 15 cities in the U.S. based on three CO 2 emission scenarios. The method was validated by comparing the projected TMY3 data using HadCM3 with the actual TMY3 data. By morphing method, the weather data was downscaled to hourly data for use in building energy simulations by EnergyPlus. Two types of residential buildings and seven types of commercial buildings were simulated for each of the 15 cities. This paper is the first to systematically study the climate change impact on various types of residential and commercial buildings in all seven climate zones in the U.S. through EnergyPlus simulations and provide weighted averaged results for national-wide building stock. We also identified geographical dependency of the impact of climate change on future energy uses. There would be a net increase in source energy consumption by the 2080s for climate zones 1–4 and net decrease in climate zones 6–7 based on the HadCM3 weather projection. Furthermore, this paper investigated natural ventilation performance in San Francisco, San Diego, and Seattle with improved natural ventilation model. Although the inverter air-source heat pump (IASHP) and composite systems have a characteristic of energy conversion, the design of IASHP and the application of IASHP assisted with additional heat sources are absent based on the relationship between the demand side and supply side. Therefore, this paper proposes a heating load decomposition method to design IASHP with an auxiliary heat source system to offer users heating in severe cold regions. Specifically, the heating load decomposition method divides the heating load of the civil building into three regions by seeking heating energy balance points. It can get an optimal heating energy balance point with the best HSPF and an optimal design heating energy balance point with the best evaluating parameter. On these grounds, we produce an IASHP prototype. The experimental results confirm the superiority of the heating load decomposition method. Compared to the traditional design method, it improves by 6.5%-12.6% of heating capacity and 2.3%-17.4% of COP of IASHP porotype. Besides, the heating performance of IASHP assisted with an electric heating system selected by an optimal heating energy balance point is better than that of an independent IASHP heating system. This paper investigates factors associated with variation in daily total (electricity and gas) energy consumption in domestic buildings using linked pre-COVID-19 smart meter, weather, building thermal characteristics, and socio-technical survey data covering appliance ownership, demographics, behaviours, and attitudes for two nested sub-samples of 1418 and 682 British households selected from the Smart Energy Research Laboratory (SERL) Observatory panel. Linear mixed effects modelling resulted in adjusted R2 between 63% and 80% depending on sample size and combinations of contextual data used. Increased daily energy consumption was significantly associated (p -value < 0.05, VIF < 5) with: households living in buildings with more rooms and bedrooms, that are older, more detached, have air-conditioning, and experience colder (more heating degree days) or less sunny weather; households with more adult occupants, more children, older adult occupants, higher heating temperature setpoints, and that do not try to save energy. The results demonstrate the value of smart meter data linked with contextual data for improving understanding of energy demand in British housing. Accredited UK researchers are invited to apply to access the data, which has recently been updated to include over 13,000 households from across Great Britain. Abstract: Directive 2010/31/EU adopted that by the end of 2020 all new buildings should be nearly Zero-Energy Buildings (nZEB) and Member States should achieve cost-optimal levels by ensuring minimum energy performance requirements for buildings. This paper discusses how low should be the energy required by a nZEB, in the context of housing energy consumption in a Mediterranean climate (Lisbon). For selected houses built after 1990, the calculated primary energy loads for regulated uses – heating, cooling and domestic hot water – are found to be below 90kWh/(m2 year). Applying the cost-optimal solutions of thermal insulation and glazing type and considering energy efficiency improved systems, this study concludes that housing energy loads are ‘low’ for the indicative range of 70kWh/(m2 year) for regulated uses or 100–110kWh/(m2 year) for total uses, taking primary energy indicators (PEI) from EN 15603. Assuming PEI from Passive House Planning Package or those to be assumed in Portugal for 2013, the threshold decreases to 60kWh/(m2 year) for regulated uses or 90–100kWh/(m2 year) for total uses. Only the first nZEB condition is explored by this paper. Abstract: With the development of urbanization in China, more and more high-rise residential buildings are constructed, mostly with 10–15 stories. Solar water heating system has been widely used in low-rise residential buildings in China, while its application in high-rise apartment is still in the initial stage. In this paper, the current application situation of solar water heating system in urban residential buildings of China is investigated. Additionally, demonstration projects of high-rise residential building are introduced, in which the application feasibility and limitation of solar water heating system are emphasized and some appropriate planning types of that are discussed. Finally, this paper analyzes the applicability of solar water heating systems integrated design in typical high-rise apartments from various aspects (such as architectural elevation, architectural plane and detailed construction) in the planning and designing phase. Abstract: Nowadays, heating energy demand has become a significant estimator used during the design stage of any new building. In this paper we are proposing a model to predict the heating energy demand, based on the main factors that influence a building''s heat consumption. It was found out that these factors are: the building global heat loss coefficient (G), the south equivalent surface (SES) and the difference between the indoor set point temperature and the sol-air temperature. In the second part of this paper, multiple dynamic simulations were carried out in order to determine the values of the inputs and output data of the future prediction model. Using the obtained database, a multiple regression prediction model was further used to develop the prediction model. In the last part of this paper the model results was validated with the measured data from 17 blocks of flats. Moreover, in this article it is also shown the comparison with the results calculated using the building''s energy certification methodology. A detailed error analysis showed that the model presents a very good accuracy (correlation coefficient of 0.987). In conclusion, the proposed model presents the following characteristics: three inputs and one output, simplicity, large applicability, good match with the simulations and with the energy certification calculations, human behavior correction. Abstract: The increase of peak and energy demand during the cooling season is becoming a crucial issue, as well as the intensification of the urban heat island effect. This trend is observed at several latitudes, including areas where overheating was unknown at building and urban levels. This phenomenon involves different issues: reduction of greenhouse gases, quality and comfort in outdoor and indoor environment, security of energy supply, public health. The building sector is directly involved in this change and adequate solutions can provide great benefit at energy and environmental levels. Roofs in particular are envelope components for which advanced solutions can provide significant energy savings in cooled buildings or improve indoor thermal conditions in not cooled buildings. Cool materials keep the roof cool under the sun by reflecting the incident solar radiation away from the building and radiating the heat away at night. Roofs covered with vegetation take benefits of the additional thermal insulation provided by the soil and of the evapo-transpiration to keep the roof cool under the sun. These two technologies are different in: structural requirements, initial and lifetime maintenance costs, impact on the overall energy performance of buildings. This paper presents a numerical comparative analysis between these solutions, taking into account the several parameters that affect the final energy performances. By means of dynamic simulations, the paper depicts how cool and green roofs can improve the energy performance of residential buildings in different localities at Mediterranean latitudes. Abstract: The main goal of this paper is to evaluate the possibility of application or replacement of radiators with low-temperature radiant panels. This paper shows the comparison results of operations of 4 space heating systems: the low-temperature radiant panel system without any additional thermal insulation of external walls (PH-WOI), the low-temperature radiant panel system with additional thermal insulation of external walls (PH-WI), the radiator system without any additional thermal insulation of external walls (the classical heating system) (RH-WOI), and the radiator system with additional thermal insulation of external walls (RH-WI). The operation of each system is simulated by software EnergyPlus. The investigation shows that the PH-WI gives the best results. Abstract: The aim of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge about energy use in residential buildings. Field measurements were carried out in 57 electrically heated Swedish single-family houses, where the total energy use (i.e. electricity use for space heating, household electricity and electricity use for hot water production), indoor temperatures and water use were recorded during four winter days. Some of the findings were that differences for households’ total energy use of similar houses were large. The characteristics of load curves clearly differ between weekdays and weekend days. The water use differs greatly for the households. This paper is part of a larger project where time use diaries were used in order to further link the energy use to residents’ every day energy related behaviours. To get a better understanding of the energy use in our homes is a prerequisite to be able to both recognise the problems as well as the potentials of reaching energy goals of our society, leading to a decreased impact on the environment from the building sector. Abstract: This paper presents the results of a computational study on the energy consumption and related CO2 emissions for heating and cooling of an office building within the Urban Heat Island of London, currently and in the future. The study developed twenty weather files in an East-West axis through London; the weather files were constructed according to future climate change scenario for 2050 suitable for the UK which have been modified to represent specific locations within the London UHI based on measurements and predictions from a program developed for this purpose (LSSAT). The study simulated an office with typical construction, heat gains and operational patterns with an advanced thermal simulation program (IESVE). The predictions confirm that heating load decreases, cooling load and overheating hours increase as the office location moves from rural to urban sites and from present to future years. It is shown that internal heat gains are an important factor affecting energy performance and that night cooling using natural ventilation will have a beneficial effect at rural and city locations. As overheating will increase in the future, more buildings will use cooling; it is shown that this might lead to a five-fold increase of CO2 emission for city centre offices in London in 2050. The paper presents detailed results of the typical office placed on the East-West axis of the city, arguing the necessity to consider using weather files based on climate projections and urban heat island for the design of current buildings to safeguard their efficiency in the future. Abstract: The article described the dilatancy technology of district heating system with high-temperature heat pump (HTHP). For the exploitation of low-temperature return network sources, a high-temperature heat pump with a heat exchanger was planned. As the core technology of the dilatancy district heating system, HTHP units and heat exchanging systems had been described detailedly through theoretical and experimental analysis. The model was proved to be in good agreement with the experiment data. It could be used for engineering design. In this paper the district heating system in Datong was taken as a case study. The main characteristics of the dilatancy district heating system had been presented in the form of diagrams. The principal advantage of dilatancy technology in the district heating system lies in increasing the temperature difference, reducing the diameters and the initial investment of primary side network. Abstract Multi-apartment buildings comprise almost half of the European housing stock and are for the most part old and energy inefficient, making active retrofitting an important topic. The objective of this paper is to determine the profitability and optimal size of different technology portfolios for renewable building energy. A mixed-integer linear programming optimisation model is developed in Matlab with the objective of maximising the Net Present Value over a time horizon of 20 years. To examine multiple use cases, a modular approach is used for realising different multi-apartment building set-ups. Building-attached and building-integrated photovoltaic systems on different parts of the building skin already achieve break-even. Heat pumps, pellet and district heating can hardly compete with gas heating yet. However, heat pumps have synergy effects with PV systems, thus reinforcing their implementation, as does a tenant portfolio with a good correlation with the sunshine hours. The profitability gap between investment costs for passive building renovation and resulting energy cost savings is significant. However, it is the smallest for buildings with quality standards. In conclusion, governmental subsidies and financial incentives such as the true cost pricing of CO 2 emissions are necessary to trigger investments in reasonable combinations of passive and active retrofitting measures. Abstract Temporal mismatches between heat provided by a drain water heat recovery system, and heat consumption are, although often disregarded in literature, a crucial factor in assessing the feasibility of the former. Generally, the only available information for residences is the average monthly consumption. The probabilistic method described in this paper uses observations from 113 residences to predict daily and monthly consumption profiles, using monthly consumption as a starting point. These profiles were then used to study the operation of a drain water heat recovery system, but can also be used to assess the operation of other heating methods where the supply is not controlled, such as solar thermal. The operation of the drain water heat recovery systems was predicted based on a monitoring campaign at 3 residences, measuring wastewater temperature and flow at 5-minute intervals, for over a 1-year period. The performance of this system was assessed using the performance data of 26 commercially available heat pumps, with rated power below 7 kW. The method was applied to a theoretical average Irish residence, obtained through a Monte Carlo analysis on just under 700 000 Irish residences. The method highlighted the potential for a reduction in heating related greenhouse gas emissions by 7.6% to 22%. However, this increased heating costs by 120% to 130%. At current traditional heating prices, the DWHR system for a single residence is not financially competitive with traditional systems, due to its significant capital investment. Further research should examine combining waste water streams from different residences to provide a larger flow, and potentially a high recoverable energy volume, thus improving financial viability. Abstract Beyond the definition and measurement of energy poverty, which have mainly attracted research interest over the last decades, attention has recently begun to turn to a broader notion of energy vulnerability. So far, this has mostly been approached on a theoretical base, suggesting the incorporation of broader socio-economic aspects into the energy poverty framework. However, the quantitative measurement of energy vulnerability is still an unexplored field of research. In this paper, the "Vulnerability Index" is developed, which, based on stochastic analysis, quantifies the vulnerability of a population to the energy poverty ratio, compared to a reference population. Moreover, Sensitivity Analysis quantifies the particular contribution of various parameters to the problem, by determining their weighting factors. As case study, the vulnerability of Greek mountainous regions with respect to the country level was studied. The results showed that households living in mountainous regions are more vulnerable versus those of the whole country, at 89.7%. It was also found that energy policy should focus on raising incomes of mountainous population and, afterwards, on energy saving measures and reduction of heating cost in mountains. Abstract This article introduces a parameter estimation and state prediction technique called constrained dual Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) that can be used in model prediction controls (MPC) and fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) in building systems. The proposed method is an improvement over the existing nonlinear filter-based methods such as the joint EKF or Unscented Kalman Filter, which is widely adopted in previous building controls research. Case studies using both simulation and real measurements are conducted to demonstrate the proposed algorithm when used for a building thermal zone. Data from parametric simulations are used to test the thermal model's ability to capture parameter variations. Measured data from five identical offices is collected to test the performance of parameter estimates and state predictions under real-life operation. Overall, the proposed algorithm is 25% faster than a conventional EKF with improved numerical stability. It can also help mitigate numerical instabilities seen in previous EKF research. Abstract: Optimizing the configuration and operation of a CHP system for a whole year becomes a computationally demanding task when, for example, integer variables are used to model the status (on/off) of different pieces of equipment. The reason is that a discrete optimization problem is fundamentally an enumerative problem, featuring that the number of possible solutions grows exponentially with the number of integer variables. This computational difficulty is known as the curse of dimensionality, and severely limits the chances to use mixed integer programming methods to design CHP systems. To work out this problem, this paper presents a new and unambiguous method to reduce a full year of demand data to a few representative days that adequately preserve significant characteristics such as the peak demands, the demand duration curves, and the temporal inter-relationship between the different types of demands (power, heating, and cooling). Days are selected using a partitional clustering method known as the k-medoids method, and their ability to resemble the original data is tested by means of two quality indexes and a calendar visual inspection. Abstract: This paper presents a review of studies on natural convection heat transfer in the triangular enclosure namely, in attic-shaped space. Much research activity has been devoted to this topic over the last three decades with a view to providing thermal comfort to the occupants in attic-shaped buildings and to minimising the energy costs associated with heating and air-conditioning. Two basic thermal boundary conditions of attic are considered to represent hot and cold climates or day and night time. This paper also reports on a significant number of studies which have been performed recently on other topics related to the attic space, for example, attics subject to localized heating and attics filled with porous media. Abstract: The performance of different HVAC systems varies when coupled with different buildings. This paper examines the relationship between building heating and cooling load and subsequent energy consumption with different HVAC systems. Two common HVAC systems in use throughout the UK office building stock, variable air volume (VAV) system and fan coil (FC) with dedicated outside air system, have been coupled with a typical narrow plan office building with and without daylight control and for both cellular and open plan. The results presented in this paper clearly indicate that it is not possible to form a reliable judgment about building energy performance based only on building heating and cooling loads. For the two investigated systems, variable air volume system and fan coil with dedicated outside air system, the difference between system demand and building demand varied from over −40% to almost +30% for cooling and between −20% and +15% for heating. Abstract: Design engineers commonly oversize HVAC systems with the justification of needing a reasonable safety factor to manage periods more extreme than the specific design conditions. Unfortunately, the safety factor easily becomes excessive. The design engineers minimize their professional risk, and by doing so they are actually asking the building owner to pay an immediate penalty due to increased first cost of equipment and an ongoing penalty due to maintenance and energy use implications. The penalties associated with excessive safety factors are often not communicated to the client. This paper presents the results of a study of “rightsizing” rooftop HVAC systems. The study included intensive interviews with HVAC designers investigating the design process and extensive field measurement of rooftop units (RTUs) during peak cooling conditions. This paper focuses on defining the signature of oversizing, i.e. how to use the physical measurements to quantify the degree of oversizing of an RTU and how to estimate the penalty of oversizing in terms of energy consumption and peak electricity demand. Utility companies incentive programs have not yet identified mechanisms for incentivizing rightsizing of HVAC system. Abstract: Building energy regulations, also referred to as building energy codes, emerged in the 1970s as an essential tool for improving energy efficiency and minimising energy consumption in buildings. Basically they aim at setting minimum energy efficiency requirements to achieve energy efficient design in new buildings. This paper analyses the development of building energy codes concerning Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) energy efficiency, along with their scope and compliance paths. The paper focuses on the synthesis of energy efficiency requirements on HVAC systems of non-residential buildings in different regulations. Critical issues for the development of prescriptive and performance regulatory paths for this type of systems in non-residential buildings are discussed in order to improve the understanding of HVAC energy efficiency topics and to provide policy makers with a menu of options to strengthen the HVAC section of building energy codes. Abstract: Combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) system models have been used by many researchers to compare their performance with conventional systems. However, decisions based on the results of computer simulations need to take into account the uncertainty of these results to get insight into the level of confidence in the predictions. This paper presents an analysis of a CCHP system model under different operating strategies with input and model data uncertainty. However, the uncertainties that underlie the variation in input parameters such as the thermal load, natural gas prices and electricity prices are not readily available. Additionally, engine performance uncertainty can be difficult to characterize because of the nonlinearity of engine efficiency curves. This paper presents practical and novel approaches to estimating the uncertainty in these and other input parameters. A case study using a small office building located in Atlanta, GA, is described to illustrate the importance of the use of uncertainty and sensitivity analysis in CCHP system performance predictions, and how the primary energy consumption, operational cost, and carbon dioxide emissions are affected by the uncertainty associated with the model input parameters. Abstract: The paper deals with an innovative natural gas combined heat, cooling and power (CHCP) system with electrical, heating and cooling capacities of 126/220/210kW, respectively. The trigeneration plant is composed of a cogenerator which uses an automotive derived gas fired internal combustion engine (ICE), coupled to a liquid LiCl–water desiccant cooling system which recovers heat from the flue gases and from the ICE cooling water. The paper describes the energetic and economic analyses of the plant and it makes some evaluations of the effects of fuel and electric prices and of the subsides and plant costs on the economic indices of the system. Abstract: Work stations in industrial spaces are frequently arranged at a significant distance from each other. Local heating applying, among others, the gas-fired direct radiant heaters, is a viable alternative to the central heating. Radiant heaters provide heat comfort to workers and guarantee the maintenance of higher temperatures of the surrounding walls at a lower indoor temperature. The advantage of heating by gas-fired radiant heaters is the lower operational cost comparing to another systems. It uses less energy to obtain 2–3K lower indoor temperature than in case of heating by conventional systems. The radiant temperature at work stations should be high enough to eliminate thermal discomfort, which in particular, is a result of radiant temperature asymmetry that may be caused by excessive and asymmetric overheating of the human body by a radiant heater. This paper includes formulas, based on the results of the self-designed test, which are then used in the calculation of the radiant temperature and the radiant temperature asymmetry, depending on the radiant heater position and the indoor temperature. This paper presents also the most recognized interrelations between the radiant temperature and its asymmetry. [Display omitted] This paper introduces a non-linear grey-box (GB) model based on stochastic differential equations that describes the heat dynamics of a school building in Denmark, equipped with a water-based heating system. The building is connected to a local district heating network through a heat exchanger. The heat is delivered to the rooms mainly through radiators and partially through a ventilation system. A monitoring system based on IoT sensors provides data on indoor climate in the rooms and on the heat load of the building. Using this data, we estimate unknown states and parameters of a model of the building's heating system using the maximum likelihood method. Important novelties of this paper include models of the water flow in the circuit and the state of the valves in the radiator thermostats. The non-linear model accurately predicts the indoor air temperature, return water temperature and heat load. The ideas behind the model lay a foundation for GB models of buildings that use different kinds of water-based heating systems such as air-to-water/water-to-water heat pumps. The study is developed for four different typologies of buildings located in the city of Naples (South of Italy), including their geometrical and thermophysical properties. The buildings are first modelled in Google Sketchup and subsequently linked to the TRNSYS environment, which also includes a detailed model of the piping systems. The models allow one to evaluate, for every period of the year, energy demand, energy supplied by radiators, heat gains, transmission, etc. The developed models are used to calculate energy demands for three scenarios for each type of building: centralized heating systems not equipped with heat metering; thermostatic valves without heat metering; heat metering and thermostatic valves. The possible savings related to thermostatic valves and heat metering are estimated using the developed model. The results are compared with the ones provided by the Italian Standards. Results show that the thermostatic valves adoption leads to a significant reduction, up to 50%, of the thermal energy demand of the residential buildings and that all the proposed systems exhibit a remarkable economic profitability, with a payback period lower than 1.7 years. Abstract: District heating is used in many urban areas in Sweden. Almost always, the district heating utility is owned by the municipality and the municipality naturally encourages proprietors to connect their buildings to the grid, even if they cannot really force them to do so. The building owners are free to choose the best system, i.e. the cheapest one, for their need. Unfortunately, it is not always so easy to find the best solution. Mixed integer linear programming (MLIP) models might here come to help. By such computer programs it is possible to find the absolutely cheapest system of available alternatives, or even combinations among them. This paper shows how to design such a model and further how to closely depict the district heating, and electricity tariff. This is of course very important because the only interface between the proprietor of the building and the utility is found in this bureaucratic instrument. If the tariff is too high the building owners will choose other heating systems than district heating, or even worse, combining district heating with alternative base load sources. In Sweden, this has been of interest because ground-water coupled heat pumps can be profitable, operated by use of the relatively low electricity prices. In this paper we show that dual-fuel, and sometimes even triple-fuel systems, are of interest when the proprietor aims at minimising the cost for space and domestic hot-water heating. This paper presents a practical method to optimize in-building section of centralized Heating, Ventilation and Air-conditioning (HVAC) systems which consist of indoor air loops and chilled water loops. First, through component characteristic analysis, mathematical models associated with cooling loads and energy consumption for heat exchangers and energy consuming devices are established. By considering variation of cooling load of each end user, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) is employed to model duct and pipe networks and obtain optimal differential pressure (DP) set points based on limited sensor information. A mix-integer nonlinear constraint optimization of system energy is formulated and solved by a modified genetic algorithm. The main feature of our paper is a systematic approach in optimizing the overall system energy consumption rather than that of individual component. A simulation study for a typical centralized HVAC system is provided to compare the proposed optimization method with traditional ones. The paper briefly describes energy-efficiency standards that have been issued for residential buildings in Northern and Central China as well as energy-efficiency inspection standards and specifications for renovation of existing residential heating systems in Northern China, and development of energy-efficiency standards for Southern China. The paper also describes barriers to improving the energy efficiency of residential buildings in China and strategies for overcoming these barriers, including reform of the method of payment for heating in Northern China. Finally, future prospects for further developing energy-efficiency standards for residential buildings in China are addressed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A 5th generation district heating (5GDH) system consists of a low-temperature network used as a heat source for de-centralized heat pumps to serve heating demand. Until now, there is a lack of studies looking into the economic aspect of implementing the 5GDH concept. The performance characteristics, system dynamics, and economic feasibility of the 5GDH system are insufficiently investigated in cold climates. This paper aims to bridge the research gap by performing the techno-economic analysis of a 5GDH system using a case study based in Tallinn, Estonia. A detailed thermo-hydraulic simulation model is constructed in TRNSYS and Fluidit Heat. In addition, the uncertainty and sensitivities on the economic performance are analysed using Monte Carlo method implemented in Python. The study further analyses the effectiveness of using solar power technologies in reducing the cost of heating. For designed boundary conditions, the system can deliver heat at levelised cost of heating (LCOH) of 80 €/MWh. Integration of photovoltaic up to a limited capacity results in 1 % reduction when compared to the base case LCOH. The economic benefit of photovoltaic thermal is lower compared to photovoltaic.
