The global environmental conferences convened by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) during the last fifty years have contributed to the development of international environmental law and institution-building. Yet, given the deteriorating state of the global environment they are but one element of international environmental governance. While they were important to bring environmental issues to the attention of states, the time for agenda-setting seems over. Rather the international community must move on to the implementation of existing binding and non-binding rules and principles. While the UNGA continues to play an important role in the context of sustainable development and the Agenda 2030 process and is, indeed a stable platform for international cooperation on environmental issues, it seems that the time for comprehensive global environmental conferences may have come to an end, unless more innovative mechanisms for the implementation of international environmental law and policy are brought forward. A paper which examines the complementarity of international economic and environmental laws, and their implementation in achieving sustainable development, is presented. Topics covered include need for cooperation between economic and environmental law among states, challenges posed by the sustainable development principle to the implementation of environmental law, and factors compromising implementation of environmental treaties.

The article discusses the highlights of the First Conference of the Parties (COP-1) of the Minamata Convention on Mercury held in Geneva, Switzerland in September 2017. Issues addressed at the conference include the implementation and financial mechanism of the Convention, which bans and phases out mercury mines, phases in a ban on the manufacture, import and export of certain mercury-containing products and controls emissions and releases of mercury, among other objectives.

The article discusses various reports related to environmental protection. Recent developments on women's rights to natural resources has been discussed globally by various international instruments including the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, International Conference on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development (ICCARD). The role of public involvement on multilateral environmental agreements has been discussed in compliance with environmental conventions. Compliance mechanism has been formed by various international instruments including Aarhus Convention, Kyoto Protocol, and Alpine Convention.

The article discusses the factors involved in establishing a legal framework for regulating sustainable development in Central Asia. As most environmental problems are not limited by national boundaries, international cooperation is required. Widespread political support for such cooperation has been expressed at the highest levels of government. Certain areas of Central Asia which face environmental difficulties are specified, including the Aral Sea Basin, Amu Darya rivers and the many regions threatened by desertification.

The article discusses various issues related to environmental law and policy. Environmental lawyers have been reported to have sided with the administration and economic forces to accept global and regional environmental standards that do not advance environmental protection. Another key issue is the international responsibility and liability for the damages caused by environmental interferences, specifically various aspects of international agreements concerning civil liability. The article discusses participation of the public with compliance mechanisms in multilateral environmental agreements. According to the author, public participation can either be direct or indirect. Direct participation involving the public's right to trigger inquiries or nominate compliance members is seldom granted. Indirect participation which allows the public to speak and provide information at compliance sessions with open and transparent procedures are also not common. He concludes that there is no good reason for public exclusion in these procedures.

Information about the Second International Symposium for the laureates of the Elizabeth Haub Prizes for Environmental Law and Diplomacy that was held in September 20-22, 2006 in Murnau, Germany is presented. The Symposium was opened by Helga Haub, who welcomed all laureates present. Various presentations by laureates covered the areas: multilateralism, compliance, environmental justice, right to information, climate change,international responsibility and national and regional matters.

A conference paper about Bali Action Plan, presented at the United Nations Climate Change Conference 2007 held in Bali, Indonesia is presented. It discusses the final result of the meeting involving resolutions, affirmation of previous plans and future action concerning climate change and poverty eradication. Concerns related to the success of international cooperation for environmental protection is presented.

The article reports on the proceedings of the convention held in Rome, Italy in September 2005 regarding the second Conference of Parties of the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade also known as the "PIC Convention." The convention focused on the issues of operationalizing the procedures developed by the nine Intergovernmental Negotiating Committees (INCs) and the need for a funding mechanism that will finance their programs.

The article reports on the Ocean Policy Summit meeting held in Lisbon, Portugal from 11-13 October 2005 with the theme "Integrated Ocean Policy: National and Regional Experiences, Prospects and Emerging Practices." The convention focuses on the various aspects of integrated oceans management as well as the concurrence among multiple ocean uses and agencies. The principles for integrated national and regional ocean governance were also discussed among the participants. Conference participants met in groups where they addressed the issues related to barriers in formulating and implementing national policies and how capacity development opportunities can be enhanced.

The article reflects on the goals achieved and those that have fallen short of the desired results in environmental policies. Several issues that have recent developments have been briefly discussed. The United Nations reported that more landmines came out of the ground than are planted each year. There have been moves made with regard to the international management of chemicals. The International Conference on Chemicals Management is going to be held on Dubai, 4-6 February 2006. The Montreal, Quebec meeting was not as successful as participants had hoped but they were happy with the results.
