This paper reviews research data concerned with social and emotional adjustment characteristics of mildly retarded children and adolescents. Contrary to a number of statements appearing in various texts and review articles, little is known concerning the type and frequency of occurrence of behavior adjustment problems among the mildly retarded. In addition, there is no suitable evidence to indicate that the adjustment level of special class children is superior to that of retarded children attending regular grades. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the social factors which may influence adjustment patterns of exceptional children. It presents a view point which attempts to explain the general pressures for deviant behavior in a society in terms of its social structure. Some observations of the historical setting in which dominant social themes and values have developed will be explored for the insights they may yield for the future. The application of such observations to the problems of exceptional children of varying types and degrees is also presented in the article.

The article presents the author's observations regarding individual and group counseling of a cerebral palsied person, which may be made basis in helping the disabled individual attain to the extent commensurate with his potential. That degree of group affiliation, would grant him the fullest opportunity to function productively and to contribute to his survival and the survival of the group. In relation to this, the author has discussed the problems which are currently confronting adolescents in a society, explaining further the implications of individual and group counseling to the problems of adjustment of cerebral palsied adolescent. His discussion on the importance of social isolation and correction of maladaptive behavior in achieving emotional and social maturity of the cerebral palsied individual concludes the article.

The article focuses on the sociolinguistic approach to the children with functional mental retardation. It is believed that poverty may have an impact on the development of mental retardation, there are, however, enough information that functional mental retardation may also be related to linguistic conflicts between standard and non-standard English speakers and auditors. The differences in linguistic systems between the teacher and children may contribute to the academic performance of these children. The conceptual models used by special education teachers of the children with functional mental retardation is seemingly based on the premises that the language of these children is characterized by true verbal destitution.

The article features two new quarterly journals, "Journal of Autism and Childhood Schizophrenia" and "Journal of Applied Social Psychology." These journals will be released and published in early 1971. "Journal of Autism and Childhood Schizophrenia" will focus attention on understanding disorders which produce childhood psychopathology. "Journal of Applied Social Psychology" will also concentrate on behavioral science research and its applicability to current problems of society.
