We revisit the concept of synergy based on the recently translated classical book by Nikolai Bernstein (On the construction of movements, Medgiz, Moscow 1947; Latash, Bernstein's Construction of Movements, Routledge, Abingdon 2020b) and progress in understanding the physics and neurophysiology of biological action. Two aspects of synergies are described: organizing elements into stable groups (modes) and ensuring dynamical stability of salient performance variables. The ability of the central nervous system to attenuate synergies in preparation for a quick action-anticipatory synergy adjustments-is emphasized. Recent studies have demonstrated synergies at the level of hypothetical control variables associated with spatial referent coordinates for effectors. Overall, the concept of synergies fits naturally the hierarchical scheme of control with referent coordinates with an important role played by back-coupling loops within the central nervous system and from peripheral sensory endings. Further, we review studies showing non-trivial changes in synergies with development, aging, fatigue, practice, and a variety of neurological disorders. Two aspects of impaired synergic control-impaired stability and impaired agility-are introduced. The recent generalization of the concept of synergies for non-motor domains, including perception, is discussed. We end the review with a list of unresolved and troubling issues., (© 2021. In this paper, we outline some important milestones in the history of the term “plasticity” in reference to the nervous system. Credit is given to William James for first adopting the term to denote changes in nervous paths associated with the establishment of habits; to Eugenio Tanzi for first identifying the articulations between neurons, not yet called synapses, as possible sites of neural plasticity; to Ernesto Lugaro for first linking neural plasticity with synaptic plasticity; and to Cajal for complementing Tanzi’s hypothesis with his own hypothesis of plasticity as the result of the formation of new connections between cortical neurons. Cajal’s early use of the word plasticity is demonstrated, and his subsequent avoidance of the term is tentatively accounted for by the fact that other authors extended it to mean neuronal reactions partly pathological and no doubt quite different from those putatively associated with normal learning. Evidence is furnished that in the first two decades of the twentieth century the theory was generally accepted that learning is based on a reduced resistance at exercized synapses, and that neural processes become associated by coactivation. Subsequently the theory fell in disgrace when Lashley’s ideas about mass action and functional equipotentiality of the cortex tended to outmode models of the brain based on orthodox neural circuitry. The synaptic plasticity theory of learning was rehabilitated in the late 1940s when Konorski and particularly Hebb argued successfully that there was no better alternative way to think about the modifiability of the brain by experience and practice. Hebb’s influential hypothesis about the mechanism of adult learning contained elements strikingly similar to the early speculations of James, Tanzi and Cajal, but Hebb did not acknowledge specifically these roots of his thinking about the brain, though he was fully aware that he had resurrected old ideas wrongly neglected for a long time. Lately the concept of neural plasticity has been complicated by attributing considerably different meanings to it. A scholarly paper by Paillard is used to show how an analysis in depth can clarify some confusion engendered by an unrestricted use of the concept and term of neural plasticity. Ghrelin, a gastrointestinal hormone, is a modulator of the sense of smell. The main source of ghrelin in the central nervous system has been mainly observed in specific populations of hypothalamic neurons. An increasing number of studies have reported ghrelin synthesis and its effect on neurons outside the hypothalamus. Ghrelin and its receptors are expressed in the olfactory bulbs and in other centres of the brain, such as the amygdala, for processing olfactory signals, pyramidal neurons of the cerebral cortex and the dorsal vagal complex of the medulla oblongata. It is known that ghrelin is involved in cognitive mechanisms and eating behaviours, in fact, its expression increases in anticipation of food intake. In order to identify the existence of centrifugal direct afferents from the main olfactory bulb to the medial amygdala and the hypothalamus arcuate nucleus, in this work we used two retrograde tracers, Dil and Fluoro Gold, and immunohistochemical procedure to visualize positive ghrelin neurons. Our paper provides neuroanatomic support for the ghrelin modulation of smell. Our results show that ghrelin neuron projections from mitral cells of bulbs can transmit olfactory information via branching connections to the amygdala and the hypothalamus. When using visual and proprioceptive information to plan a reach, it has been proposed that the brain combines these cues to estimate the object and/or limb's location. Specifically, according to the maximum-likelihood estimation (MLE) model, sensory inputs are combined such that more reliable inputs are assigned a greater weight (Ernst and Banks in Nature 415:429-433, ). In this paper, we examined if the brain is able to adjust which sensory cue it weights the most. Specifically, we asked if the brain changes how it weights sensory information when the availability of a visual cue is manipulated. Twelve healthy subjects reached to visual (V), proprioceptive (P), or visual + proprioceptive (VP) targets under different visual delay conditions (e.g., on V and VP trials, the visual target was available for the entire reach; it was removed with the go signal, or it was removed 1 s before the go signal). To establish which sensory cue subjects weighted the most, we compared endpoint positions achieved on V and P reaches to VP reaches. Results indicated that subjects combined visual and proprioceptive cues in accordance with the MLE model when reaching to VP targets. Moreover, subjects' reaching errors to visual targets increased with longer visual delays (particularly in the vertical direction). However, there was no change in reach variability with longer delays, and subjects did not reweight visual information as the availability of visual information was manipulated. In the companion paper utilizing a quantitative model of optimal motor coordination (Part I, Rand and Shimansky, in Exp Brain Res 225:55-73, ), we examined coordination between X and Y movement directions (XYC) during reaching movements performed under three prescribed speeds, two movement amplitudes, and two target sizes. The obtained results indicated that the central nervous system (CNS) utilizes a two-phase strategy, where the initial and the final phases correspond to lower and higher precision of information processing, respectively, for controlling goal-directed reach-type movements to optimize the total cost of task performance including the cost of neural computations. The present study investigates how two different well-known concepts used for describing movement performance relate to the concepts of optimal XYC and two-phase control strategy. First, it is examined to what extent XYC is equivalent to movement trajectory straightness. The data analysis results show that the variability, the movement trajectory's deviation from the straight line, increases with an increase in prescribed movement speed. In contrast, the dependence of XYC strength on movement speed is opposite (in total agreement with an assumption of task performance optimality), suggesting that XYC is a feature of much higher level of generality than trajectory straightness. Second, it is tested how well the ballistic and the corrective components described in the traditional concept of two-component model of movement performance match with the initial and the final phase of the two-phase control strategy, respectively. In fast reaching movements, the percentage of trials with secondary corrective submovement was smaller under larger-target shorter-distance conditions. In slower reaching movements, meaningful parsing was impossible due to massive fluctuations in the kinematic profile throughout the movement. Thus, the parsing points determined by the conventional submovement analysis did not consistently reflect separation between the ballistic and error-corrective components. In contrast to the traditional concept of two-component movement performance, the concept of two-phase control strategy is applicable to a wide variety of experimental conditions. The ability to formulate explicit mathematical models of motor systems has played a central role in recent progress in motor control research. As a result of these modeling efforts and in particular the incorporation of concepts drawn from control systems theory, ideas about motor control have changed substantially. There is growing emphasis on motor learning and particularly on predictive or anticipatory aspects of control that are related to the neural representation of dynamics. Two ideas have become increasingly prominent in mathematical modeling of motor function--forward internal models and inverse dynamics. The notion of forward internal models which has drawn from work in adaptive control arises from the recognition that the nervous system takes account of dynamics in motion planning. Inverse dynamics, a complementary way of adjusting control signals to deal with dynamics, has proved a simple means to establish the joint torques necessary to produce desired movements. In this paper, we review the force control formulation in which inverse dynamics and forward internal models play a central role. We present evidence in its favor and describe its limitations. We note that inverse dynamics and forward models are potential solutions to general problems in motor control--how the nervous system establishes a mapping between desired movements and associated control signals, and how control signals are adjusted in the context of motor learning, dynamics and loads. However, we find little empirical evidence that specifically supports the inverse dynamics or forward internal model proposals per se. We further conclude that the central idea of the force control hypothesis--that control levels operate through the central specification of forces--is flawed. This is specifically evident in the context of attempts to incorporate physiologically realistic muscle and reflex mechanisms into the force control model. In particular, the formulation offers no means to shift between postures without triggering resistance due to postural stabilizing mechanisms.

A quantitative model of optimal transport-aperture coordination (TAC) during reach-to-grasp movements has been developed in our previous studies. The utilization of that model for data analysis allowed, for the first time, to examine the phase dependence of the precision demand specified by the CNS for neurocomputational information processing during an ongoing movement. It was shown that the CNS utilizes a two-phase strategy for movement control. That strategy consists of reducing the precision demand for neural computations during the initial phase, which decreases the cost of information processing at the expense of lower extent of control optimality. To successfully grasp the target object, the CNS increases precision demand during the final phase, resulting in higher extent of control optimality. In the present study, we generalized the model of optimal TAC to a model of optimal coordination between X and Y components of point-to-point planar movements (XYC). We investigated whether the CNS uses the two-phase control strategy for controlling those movements, and how the strategy parameters depend on the prescribed movement speed, movement amplitude and the size of the target area. The results indeed revealed a substantial similarity between the CNS's regulation of TAC and XYC. First, the variability of XYC within individual trials was minimal, meaning that execution noise during the movement was insignificant. Second, the inter-trial variability of XYC was considerable during the majority of the movement time, meaning that the precision demand for information processing was lowered, which is characteristic for the initial phase. That variability significantly decreased, indicating higher extent of control optimality, during the shorter final movement phase. The final phase was the longest (shortest) under the most (least) challenging combination of speed and accuracy requirements, fully consistent with the concept of the two-phase control strategy. The central nervous system uses stereotypical combinations of the three wrist/forearm joint angles to point in a given (2D) direction in space. In this paper, we first confirm and analyze this Donders' law for the wrist as well as the distributions of the joint angles. We find that the quadratic surfaces fitting the experimental wrist configurations during pointing tasks are characterized by a subject-specific Koenderink shape index and by a bias due to the prono-supination angle distribution. We then introduce a simple postural model using only four parameters to explain these characteristics in a pointing task. The model specifies the redundancy of the pointing task by determining the one-dimensional task-equivalent manifold (TEM), parameterized via wrist torsion. For every pointing direction, the torsion is obtained by the concurrent minimization of an extrinsic cost, which guarantees minimal angle rotations (similar to Listing's law for eye movements) and of an intrinsic cost, which penalizes wrist configurations away from comfortable postures. This allows simulating the sequence of wrist orientations to point at eight peripheral targets, from a central one, passing through intermediate points. The simulation first shows that in contrast to eye movements, which can be predicted by only considering the extrinsic cost (i.e., Listing's law), both costs are necessary to account for the wrist/forearm experimental data. Second, fitting the synthetic Donders' law from the simulated task with a quadratic surface yields similar fitting errors compared to experimental data. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of this paper was to determine if trunk antagonist activation is associated with impaired neuromuscular performance. To test this theory, we used two methods to impair neuromuscular control: strenuous exertions and fatigue. Force variability (standard deviation of force signal) was assessed for graded isometric trunk exertions (10, 20, 40, 60, 80% of max) in flexion and extension, and at the start and end of a trunk extensor fatiguing trial. Normalized EMG signals for five trunk muscle pairs ( RA rectus abdominis, EO external oblique, IO internal oblique, TE thoracic erector spinae, and LE lumbar erector spinae) were collected for each graded exertion, and at the start and end of a trunk extensor fatiguing trial. Force variability increased for more strenuous exertions in both flexion ( P < 0.001) and extension ( P < 0.001), and after extensor fatigue ( P < 0.012). In the flexion direction, both antagonist muscles (TE and LE) increased activation for more strenuous exertions ( P < 0.001). In the extension direction, all antagonist muscles except RA increased activation for more strenuous exertions ( P < 0.05) and following fatigue ( P < 0.01). These data demonstrate a strong relationship between force variability and antagonistic muscle activation, irrespective of where this variability comes from. Such antagonistic co-activation increases trunk stiffness with the possible objective of limiting kinematic disturbances due to greater force variability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper introduces an original biofeedback system for improving human balance control, whose underlying principle consists in providing additional sensory information related to foot sole pressure distribution to the user through a tongue-placed tactile output device. To assess the effect of this biofeedback system on postural control during quiet standing, ten young healthy adults were asked to stand as immobile as possible with their eyes closed in two conditions of No-biofeedback and Biofeedback. Centre of foot pressure (CoP) displacements were recorded using a force platform. Results showed reduced CoP displacements in the Biofeedback relative to the No-biofeedback condition. The present findings evidenced the ability of the central nervous system to efficiently integrate an artificial plantar-based, tongue-placed tactile biofeedback for controlling control posture during quiet standing. Spreading depression (SD) is a neurophysiological phenomenon which occurs in the grey substance of the central nervous system. SD is characterised by a wave-like spread of depressed neuronal activity, by large ion shifts between intra- and extracellular space, by cellular depolarization, and by altered optical properties of the tissue giving rise to an intrinsic optical signal (IOS). In the shadow of SD further waves are difficult to trigger and such waves spread at lower velocity than usual. In this paper we examine the temperature dependence of the duration of this recovery (refractory) period and the temperature dependence of the duration of the IOS in the chicken retina. It is shown that these SD accompanying events are strongly dependent on temperature and that they are likely to depend on the metabolic rate in the tissue. The observed correlation of the duration of the IOS with the duration of the refractory period suggests that the IOS is a good indicator for the duration of the tissue recovery. Such a correlation would be of great value to the experimentalist who must know about the duration of the refractory period: while the latter is laborious to determine, recording the IOS is convenient. Background: Long-term sequelae of COVID-19 can result in reduced functionality of the central nervous system and substandard quality of life. Gaining insight into the recovery trajectory of admitted COVID-19 patients on their cognitive performance and global structural brain connectivity may allow a better understanding of the diseases' relevance. Objectives: To assess whole-brain structural connectivity in former non-intensive-care unit (ICU)- and ICU-admitted COVID-19 survivors over 2 months following hospital discharge and correlate structural connectivity measures to cognitive performance. Methods: Participants underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging brain scans and a cognitive test battery after hospital discharge to evaluate structural connectivity and cognitive performance. Multilevel models were constructed for each graph measure and cognitive test, assessing the groups' influence, time since discharge, and interactions. Linear regression models estimated whether the graph measurements affected cognitive measures and whether they differed between ICU and non-ICU patients. Results: Six former ICU and six non-ICU patients completed the study. Across the various graph measures, the characteristic path length decreased over time (β = 0.97, p = 0.006). We detected no group-level effects (β = 1.07, p = 0.442) nor interaction effects (β = 1.02, p = 0.220). Cognitive performance improved for both non-ICU and ICU COVID-19 survivors on four out of seven cognitive tests 2 months later (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Adverse effects of COVID-19 on brain functioning and structure abate over time. These results should be supported by future research including larger sample sizes, matched control groups of healthy non-infected individuals, and more extended follow-up periods. Non-invasive theta burst stimulation (TBS) can elicit facilitatory or inhibitory changes in the central nervous system when applied intermittently (iTBS) or continuously (cTBS). Conversely, neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can activate the muscles to send a sensory volley, which is also known to affect the excitability of the central nervous system. We investigated whether cortical iTBS (facilitatory) or cTBS (inhibitory) priming can affect subsequent NMES-induced corticospinal excitability. A total of six interventions were tested, each with 11 able-bodied participants: cortical priming followed by NMES (iTBS + NMES and cTBS + NMES), NMES only (iTBSsham + NMES and cTBSsham + NMES), and cortical priming only (iTBS + rest and cTBS + rest). After iTBS or cTBS priming, NMES was used to activate right extensor capri radialis (ECR) muscle intermittently for 10 min (5 s ON/5 s OFF). Single-pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and maximum motor response (Mmax) elicited by radial nerve stimulation were compared before and after each intervention for 30 min. Our results showed that associative facilitatory iTBS + NMES intervention elicited greater MEP facilitation that lasted for at least 30 min after the intervention, while none of the interventions alone were effective to produce effects. We conclude that facilitatory iTBS priming can make the central nervous system more susceptible to changes elicited by NMES through sensory recruitment to enhance facilitation of corticospinal plasticity, while cTBS inhibitory priming efficacy could not be confirmed. Skeletal muscles embed multiple tendon organs, both at the proximal and distal ends of muscle fibers. One of the functions of such spatial distribution may be to provide locally unique force feedback, which may become more important when stresses are distributed non-uniformly within the muscle. Forces exerted by connections between adjacent muscles (i.e. epimuscular myofascial forces) may cause such local differences in force. The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the effects of mechanical interactions between adjacent muscles on sensory encoding by tendon organs. Action potentials from single afferents were recorded intra-axonally in response to ramp-hold release (RHR) stretches of a passive agonistic muscle at different lengths or relative positions of its passive synergist. The tendons of gastrocnemius (GAS), plantaris (PL) and soleus (SO) muscles were cut from the skeleton for attachment to servomotors. Connective tissues among these muscles were kept intact. Lengthening GAS + PL decreased the force threshold of SO tendon organs (p = 0.035). The force threshold of lateral gastrocnemius (LG) tendon organs was not affected by SO length (p = 0.371). Also displacing LG + PL, kept at a constant muscle–tendon unit length, from a proximal to a more distal position resulted in a decrease in force threshold of LG tendon organs (p = 0.007). These results indicate that tendon organ firing is affected by changes in length and/or relative position of adjacent synergistic muscles. We conclude that tendon organs can provide the central nervous system with information about local stresses caused by epimuscular myofascial forces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spinal DC stimulation (tsDCS) shows promise as a technique for the facilitation of functional recovery of motor function following central nervous system (CNS) lesion. However, the network mechanisms that are responsible for the effects of tsDCS are still uncertain. Here, in a series of experiments, we tested the hypothesis that tsDCS increases the excitability of the long-latency stretch reflex, leading to increased excitability of corticospinal neurons in the primary motor cortex. Experiments were performed in 33 adult human subjects (mean age 28 ± 7 years/14 females). Subjects were seated in a reclining armchair with the right leg attached to a footplate, which could be quickly plantarflexed (100 deg/s; 6 deg amplitude) to induce stretch reflexes in the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle at short (45 ms) and longer latencies (90–95 ms). This setup also enabled measuring motor evoked potentials (MEPs) and cervicomedullary evoked potentials (cMEPs) from TA evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electrical stimulation at the cervical junction, respectively. Cathodal tsDCS at 2.5 and 4 mA was found to increase the long-latency reflex without any significant effect on the short-latency reflex. Furthermore, TA MEPs, but not cMEPs, were increased following tsDCS. We conclude that cathodal tsDCS over lumbar segments may facilitate proprioceptive transcortical reflexes in the TA muscle, and we suggest that the most likely explanation of this facilitation is an effect on ascending fibers in the dorsal columns. The purpose of this study was to explore the ability of the central nervous system (CNS) to organize synergies at two levels of a hypothetical control hierarchy involved in two-hand multi-finger prehension tasks with one or more persons participating in the task together. At the higher level of the hierarchy, the total force and moment of force produced on an object are distributed between the thumb and the virtual finger (an imagined finger with mechanical output equal to the involved fingers of the hand), while at the lower level the virtual finger action is distributed among the four fingers. We tested a hypothesis that the CNS is able to organize synergies at only one level of the hierarchy. The subjects held vertically one of the two handles, a narrow one and a wide one. They used the four fingers of the right hand opposed by the right hand thumb, the left hand thumb, the left hand index finger, the thumb of an experimenter, the index finger of an experimenter, or an inanimate object. Forces and moments of force produced by each digit were recorded. Indices of synergies stabilizing the mechanical output variables at each of the two levels were computed. Contrary to the expectations, force and moment of force stabilizing synergies were found at one or both levels of the hierarchy across all tasks. Unimanual tasks exhibited higher synergy indices compared to all tasks, while intrapersonal synergy indices were higher than those of interpersonal synergies. The results suggest that both feed-forward and feedback mechanisms may be used to create force and moment of force stabilizing synergies. We invoke the notion of chain effects and generalize it for relations among variance components related to stabilization of different mechanical variables. The small-world architecture has gained considerable attention in anatomical brain connectivity studies. However, how to adequately quantify small-worldness in diffusion networks has remained a problem. We addressed the limits of small-world measures and defined new metric indices: the small-world efficiency (SWE) and the small-world angle (SWA), both based on the tradeoff between high global and local efficiency. To confirm the validity of the new indices, we examined the behavior of SWE and SWA of networks based on the Watts-Strogatz model as well as the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data from 75 healthy old subjects (aged 50-70). We found that SWE could classify the subjects into different age groups, and was correlated with individual performance on the WAIS-IV test. Moreover, to evaluate the sensitivity of the proposed measures to network, two network attack strategies were applied. To date, little work has focused on whether cognitive-task interference during postural response execution is influenced by the direction and/or magnitude of the perturbation applied. Hypothetically, the increased difficulty associated with a backward loss of balance could necessitate increased allocation of cognitive resources to counteract destabilizing forces. The current study investigated these relationships using a paradigm in which individuals performed a cognitive task (auditory Stroop task during quiet stance; baseline condition). In certain trials, a translation of the support surface was concurrently evoked (magnitude: small or large; direction: forward or backward) which required a postural response to maintain balance. Ten healthy young adults completed four blocks of these experimental trials (26 randomized trials/block). Postural stability during balance recovery was evaluated using the margin of stability (MoS), while Stroop task performance was based on reaction time cost (RTC) and differences between experimental conditions. Results showed no effect of perturbation direction on RTC, but there was an observed MoS increase at peak extrapolated center of mass excursion following a small perturbation evoked concurrently with the cognitive task. No effect of cognitive-task performance was detected for MoS during stepping strategies (followed large perturbations). Instead, increased RTC were observed relative to the fixed base of support responses. In general, young adults adopted a “posture-first” strategy, regardless of perturbation direction, reinforcing the importance of cognition in the maintenance of upright balance. Knowing when the head moves is crucial information for the central nervous system to maintain a veridical representation of the self in the world for perception and action. Previous studies have shown that active head movement onset has to precede a sound by approximately 80 ms to be perceived as simultaneous, suggesting that the perceived timing of head movement is slow. However, this research was conducted with closed eyes. Given that visual information is available for most natural head movements, could perceptual delays in head movement onset be related to removing vision? Here, we examined whether visual information affects the perceived timing of active head movement onset. Participants performed a series of temporal order judgment tasks between their active head movement and an auditory tone presented at various stimulus onset asynchronies. Visual information was either absent (eyes closed) or present while either maintaining fixation on an earth or head-fixed target in the dark or in the light. Results show that head movement onset has to precede a sound by ~76 ms with eyes closed confirming previous work. The results also suggest that head movement onset must still precede a sound when fixating targets in the dark with a trend for the head having to move with less lead time with visual information and with the vestibulo-ocular reflex active or suppressed (~70 to 48 ms). Together, these results suggest that the perception of head movement onset is persistently delayed and is not fully resolved even with full field visual input. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advance visual information of a projection action and ball flight information is important for organizing dynamic interceptive actions like catching. However, how the central nervous system (CNS) manages the relationship between advance visual information and emerging ball flight information in regulating behavior is less well understood. Here, we sought to examine the extent that advance visual information to the CNS constrains regulation of catching actions by synchronizing and desynchronizing its relationship with ball trajectory characteristics. Novel technology was used to present video footage of an actor throwing a ball at three different speeds, integrated with information from a real ball projected by a machine set to the three speeds. The technology enabled three synchronized and six desynchronized conditions between advance visual information and subsequent ball flight trajectories. Catching performance, kinematic data from the catching hand and gaze behaviors were recorded. Findings revealed that desynchronization of video images of ball projection shaped emergent catching behaviors. Footage of slower throws, paired with faster ball projection speeds, caused catching performance decrements. Timing in early phases of action was organized by the CNS to match the advance visual information presented. In later phases, like the grasp, ball flight information constraints adapted and regulated behaviors. Gaze behaviors showed increased ball projection speed resulted in participants tracking the ball for a smaller percentage of ball flight. Findings highlighted the role of the two visual systems in perception and action, implicating the importance of coupling advanced visual information and ball flight to regulate emergent movement coordination tendencies during interceptive behaviors. The study aimed at determining changes in a course of motoneuronal afterhyperpolarization (AHP) and in contractile twitches of motor units (MUs) during activity evoked by increasing number of stimuli (from 1 to 5), at short interspike intervals (5 ms). The stimulation was applied antidromically to spinal motoneurones or to isolated axons of MUs of the medial gastrocnemius muscle within two separate series of experiments on anesthetized rats. Alterations in the amplitude and time parameters of the AHP of successive spikes were compared to changes in force and time course of successive twitches obtained by mathematical subtraction of tetanic contractions evoked by one to five stimuli. The extent of changes of the studied parameters depended on a number of applied stimuli. The maximal modulation of the AHP and twitch parameters (a prolongation and an increase in the AHP and twitch amplitudes) was typically observed after the second pulse, while higher number of pulses at the same frequency did not induce so prominent changes. One may conclude that changes observed in parameters of action potentials of motoneurons are concomitant to changes in contractile properties of MU twitches. Goal-directed movements performed in a virtual environment pose serious challenges to the central nervous system because the visual and proprioceptive representations of one's hand position are not perfectly congruent. The aim of the present study was to determine whether the vision of one's hand or upper arm, compared with that of a cursor representing the tips of one's index finger and thumb, optimizes the planning and modulation of one's movement as the cursor nears the target. The participants performed manual aiming movements that differed by the source of static visual information available during movement planning and the source of dynamic information available during movement execution. The results revealed that the vision of one's hand during the movement planning phase results in more efficient online control processes than when the movement planning was based on a virtual representation of one's initial hand location. This observation was seen regardless of the availability of online visual feedback during movement execution. These results suggest that a more reliable estimation of the initial hand position results in more accurate estimation of the position of the cursor/hand at any one time resulting in more accurate online control. Many neurons display significant patterning in their spike trains (e.g. oscillations, bursting), and there is accumulating evidence that information is contained in these patterns. In many cases, this patterning is caused by intrinsic mechanisms rather than external signals. In this review, we focus on spiking activity that displays nonrenewal statistics (i.e. memory that persists from one firing to the next). Such statistics are seen in both peripheral and central neurons and appear to be ubiquitous in the CNS. We review the principal mechanisms that can give rise to nonrenewal spike train statistics. These are separated into intrinsic mechanisms such as relative refractoriness and network mechanisms such as coupling with delayed inhibitory feedback. Next, we focus on the functional roles for nonrenewal spike train statistics. These can either increase or decrease information transmission. We also focus on how such statistics can give rise to an optimal integration timescale at which spike train variability is minimal and how this might be exploited by sensory systems to maximize the detection of weak signals. We finish by pointing out some interesting future directions for research in this area. In particular, we explore the interesting possibility that synaptic dynamics might be matched with the nonrenewal spiking statistics of presynaptic spike trains in order to further improve information transmission. Motor learning is a process that extends beyond training sessions. Specifically, physical practice triggers a series of physiological changes in the CNS that are regrouped under the term 'consolidation' (Stickgold and Walker ). These changes can result in between-session improvement or performance stabilization (Walker ). In a series of three experiments, we tested whether consolidation also occurs following observation. In Experiment 1, participants observed an expert model perform a sequence of arm movements. Although we found evidence of observation learning, no significant difference was revealed between participants asked to reproduce the observed sequence either 5 min or 24 h later (no between-session improvement). In Experiment 2, two groups of participants observed an expert model perform two distinct movement sequences (A and B) either 10 min or 8 h apart; participants then physically performed both sequences after a 24-h break. Participants in the 8-h group performed Sequence B less accurately compared to participants in the 5-min group, suggesting that the memory representation of the first sequence had been stabilized and that it interfered with the learning of the second sequence. Finally, in Experiment 3, the initial observation phase was replaced by a physical practice phase. In contrast with the results of Experiment 2, participants in the 8-h group performed Sequence B significantly more accurately compared to participants in the 5-min group. Together, our results suggest that the memory representation of a skill learned through observation undergoes consolidation. Mid-level visual processes which integrate local orientation information for the detection of global structure can be investigated using global form stimuli of varying complexity. Several lines of evidence suggest that the identification of concentric and parallel organisations relies on different underlying neural substrates. The current study measured brain activation by concentric, horizontal parallel, and vertical parallel arrays of short line segments, compared to arrays of randomly oriented segments. Six subjects were scanned in a blocked design functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment. We compared percentage BOLD signal change during the concentric, horizontal and vertical blocks within early retinotopic areas, the fusiform face area and the lateral occipital complex. Unexpectedly, we found that vertical and horizontal parallel forms differentially activated visual cortical areas beyond V1, but in general, activations to concentric and parallel forms did not differ. Vertical patterns produced the highest percentage signal change overall and only area V3A showed a significant difference between concentric and parallel (horizontal) stimuli, with the former better activating this area. These data suggest that the difference in brain activation to vertical and horizontal forms arises at intermediate or global levels of visual representation since the differential activity was found in mid-level retinotopic areas V2 and V3 but not in V1. This may explain why earlier studies—using methods that emphasised responses to local orientation—did not discover this vertical–horizontal anisotropy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated coordination of the hand grip force (GF; normal component of the force acting at the hand–object contact area) and load force (LF; the tangential component) in a variety of grasping techniques and two LF directions. Thirteen participants exerted a continuous sinusoidal LF pattern against externally fixed handles applying both standard (i.e., using either the tips of the digits or the palms; the precision and palm grasps, respectively) and non-standard grasping techniques (using wrists and the dorsal finger areas; the wrist and fist grasp). We hypothesized (1) that the non-standard grasping techniques would provide deteriorated indices of force coordination when compared with the standard ones, and (2) that the nervous system would be able to adjust GF to the differences in friction coefficients of various skin areas used for grasping. However, most of the indices of force coordination remained similar across the tested grasping techniques, while the GF adjustments for the differences in friction coefficients (highest in the palm and the lowest in the fist and wrist grasp) provided inconclusive results. As hypothesized, GF relative to the skin friction was lowest in the precision grasp, but highest in the palm grasp. Therefore, we conclude that (1) the elaborate coordination of GF and LF consistently seen across the standard grasping techniques could be generalized to the non-standard ones, while (2) the ability to adjust GF using the same grasping technique to the differences in friction of various objects cannot be fully generalized to the GF adjustment when different grasps (i.e., hand segments) are used to manipulate the same object. Due to the importance of the studied phenomena for understanding both the functional and neural control aspects of manipulation, future studies should extend the current research to the transient and dynamic tasks, as well as to the general role of friction in our mechanical interactions with the environment. Recent functional neuroimaging and lesion studies demonstrate the involvement of the orbitofrontal/ventromedial prefrontal cortex as a key structure in decision making processes. This region seems to be particularly crucial when contingencies between options and consequences are unknown but have to be learned by the use of feedback following previous decisions (decision making under ambiguity). However, little is known about the neural correlates of decision making under risk conditions in which information about probabilities and potential outcomes is given. In the present study, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) responses in 12 subjects during a decision making task. This task provided explicit information about probabilities and associated potential incentives. The responses were compared to BOLD signals in a control condition without information about incentives. In contrast to previous decision making studies, we completely removed the outcome phase following a decision to exclude the potential influence of feedback previously received on current decisions. The results indicate that the integration of information about probabilities and incentives leads to activations within the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, the posterior parietal lobe, the anterior cingulate and the right lingual gyrus. We assume that this pattern of activation is due to the involvement of executive functions, conflict detection mechanisms and arithmetic operations during the deliberation phase of decisional processes that are based on explicit information. Transmission of information from the terminals group II muscle afferents is subject to potent presynaptic modulation by both segmental group II and cutaneous afferents and by descending monoaminergic systems. Currently it is unknown whether descending corticospinal fibres affect this transmission. Here we have examined whether corticospinal tract activation modulates the size of monosynaptic focal synaptic potentials (FSPs) evoked by group II muscle afferents, and the excitability of intraspinal terminals of group II afferents, both of which are indices used to show presynaptic control. Conditioning stimulation of corticospinal pathways had no effects on the sizes of group II evoked FSPs in the midlumbar or sacral segments at either dorsal horn or intermediate zone locations. These stimuli also had no effect on the excitability of single group II afferent terminals in the dorsal horn of the midlumbar segments. As positive controls, we verified that the corticospinal conditioning stimuli used did effectively depress FSPs evoked from cutaneous afferents recorded at the same spinal locations as the group II field potentials in all experiments. Corticospinal tract conditioning stimuli did not consistently enhance or reduce the depression of group II FSPs that was evoked by stimulation of ipsilateral segmental group II or cutaneous afferents; in the large majority of cases there was no effect. The aim of this study was to investigate the contralateral motor overflow in children during single-finger and multi-finger maximum force production tasks. Forty-five right handed children, 5–11 years of age produced maximum isometric pressing force in flexion or extension with single fingers or all four fingers of their right hand. The forces produced by individual fingers of the right and left hands were recorded and analyzed in four-dimensional finger force vector space. The results showed that increases in task (right) hand finger forces were linearly associated with non-task (left) hand finger forces. The ratio of the non-task hand finger force magnitude to the corresponding task hand finger force magnitude, termed motor overflow magnitude (MOM), was greater in extension than flexion. The index finger flexion task showed the smallest MOM values. The similarity between the directions of task hand and non-task hand finger force vectors in four-dimensional finger force vector space, termed motor overflow direction (MOD), was the greatest for index and smallest for little finger tasks. MOM of a four-finger task was greater than the sum of MOMs of single-finger tasks, and this phenomenon was termed motor overflow surplus. Contrary to previous studies, no single-finger or four-finger tasks showed significant changes of MOM or MOD with the age of children. We conclude that the contralateral motor overflow in children during finger maximum force production tasks is dependent upon the task fingers and the magnitude and direction of task finger forces. In humans, studies of back muscle activity have mainly addressed the functioning of lumbar muscles during postural adjustments or rhythmic activity, including locomotor tasks. The present study investigated how back muscles are activated along the spine during rhythmical activities in order to gain insights into spinal neuronal organization. Electromyographic recordings of back muscles were performed at various trunk levels, and changes occurring in burst amplitudes and phase relationships were analyzed. Subjects performed several rhythmic behaviors: forward walking (FW), backward walking (BW), amble walking (where the subjects moved their arms in phase with the ipsilateral leg), walking on hands and knees (HK) and walking on hands with the knees on the edge of a treadmill (Hand). In a final task, the subjects were standing and were asked to swing (Swing) only their arms as if they were walking. It was found that axial trunk muscles are sequentially activated by a motor command running along the spinal cord (which we term “motor waves”) during various types of locomotion or other rhythmic motor tasks. The bursting pattern recorded under these conditions can be classified into three categories: (1) double-burst rhythmic activity in a descending (i.e., with a rostro-caudal propagation) motor wave during FW, BW and HK conditions; (2) double-burst rhythmic activity with a stationary motor wave (i.e., occurring in a single phase along the trunk) during the ‘amble’ walk condition; (3) monophasic rhythmic activity with an ascending (i.e., with a caudo-rostral propagation) motor wave during the Swing and Hands conditions. Our results suggest that the networks responsible for the axial propagation of motor activity during locomotion may correspond to those observed in invertebrates or lower vertebrates, and thus may have been partly phylogenetically conserved. Five experiments explored the influence of visual and kinesthetic/proprioceptive reference frames on location memory. Experiments 1 and 2 compared visual and kinesthetic reference frames in a memory task using visually-specified locations and a visually-guided response. When the environment was visible, results replicated previous findings of biases away from the midline symmetry axis of the task space, with stability for targets aligned with this axis. When the environment was not visible, results showed some evidence of bias away from a kinesthetically-specified midline (trunk anterior–posterior [a–p] axis), but there was little evidence of stability when targets were aligned with body midline. This lack of stability may reflect the challenges of coordinating visual and kinesthetic information in the absence of an environmental reference frame. Thus, Experiments 3–5 examined kinesthetic guidance of hand movement to kinesthetically-defined targets. Performance in these experiments was generally accurate with no evidence of consistent biases away from the trunk a–p axis. It has been postulated that the central nervous system (CNS) can tune the mechanical behavior of a joint by altering reflex stiffness in a task-dependant manner. However, most of the evidence supporting this hypothesis has come from the analysis of H-reflexes or electromyogram (EMG) responses. Changes in overall stiffness have been documented but, as yet, there is no direct evidence that the CNS can control reflex stiffness independently of the intrinsic stiffness. We have used a novel identification algorithm to estimate intrinsic and reflex stiffness and feed it back to subjects in real-time. Using this biofeedback, subjects could learn to control reflex stiffness independently of intrinsic stiffness. At low torque levels, subjects could vary their reflex stiffness gain by a factor of 4, while maintaining elastic stiffness and torque constant. EMG measurements confirmed that the contraction levels of the ankle muscles remained constant. Further experiments showed that subjects could change their reflexes rapidly on command. Thus, we conclude that the CNS can control reflex stiffness independently and so has great flexibility in adjusting the mechanical properties of a joint to meet functional requirements. There is some evidence that human subjects preferentially select small numbers when asked to sample numbers from large intervals “at random”. A retrospective analysis of single digit frequencies in 16 independent experiments with the Mental Dice Task (generation of digits 1–6 during 1 min) confirmed the occurrence of small-number biases (SNBs) in 488 healthy subjects. A subset of these experiments suggested a spatial nature of this bias in the sense of a “leftward” shift along the number line. First, individual SNBs were correlated with leftward deviations in a number line bisection task (but unrelated to the bisection of physical lines). Second, in 20 men, the magnitude of SNBs significantly correlated with leftward attentional biases in the judgment of chimeric faces. Finally, cognitive activation of the right hemisphere enhanced SNBs in 20 different men, while left hemisphere activation reduced them. Together, these findings provide support for a spatial component in random number generation. Specifically, they allow an interpretation of SNBs in terms of “pseudoneglect in number space.” We recommend the use of random digit generation for future explorations of spatial-attentional asymmetries in numerical processing and discuss methodological issues relevant to prospective designs. We studied Fos expression in the central nociceptive pathways at different sedative levels in order to clarify the central mechanism of propofol’s nociceptive action. Sprague–Dawley rats received propofol (PRO) or pentobarbital (PEN) and were divided into two groups with different doses of drug administration (light and deep sedative levels) based on the electroencephalogram analysis. Rats at each sedative level received heat stimulation to their face and Fos immunohistochemistry was performed at various brain sites. We also infused lidocaine into the jugular vein to test whether PRO directly activated nociceptors distributed in the vein. Fos expression in two major ascending pain pathways (lateral and medial systems) and descending modulatory system were precisely analyzed following intravenous (i.v.) administration of PRO or PEN. Many Fos protein-like immunoreactive (Fos protein-LI) cells were expressed in the trigeminal spinal nucleus caudalis (Vc), parabrachial nucleus, parafascicular nucleus, a wide area of the primary somatosensory cortex, anterior cingulate cortex, amygdala, periaqueductal gray, solitary tract nucleus, and lateral hypothalamus following heating of the face during PRO or PEN infusion. The number of Fos protein-LI cells was significantly greater in many Central nervous system regions during PRO infusion compared with PEN. Fos expression was significantly greater in the Vc and Periaqueductal gray following greater amount of PRO infusions compared, whereas they were significantly smaller in the Vc in the rats with PEN infusion. The Fos expression was significantly depressed following i.v. infusion of lidocaine before PRO administration. The present findings suggest that PRO is involved in the enhancement of Vc activity through direct activation of the primary afferent fibers innervating veins, resulting in pain induction during infusion. The authors investigated the multisensory control of posture by altering sensory information across the visual and somatosensory systems. The support surface and visual surround were sway-referenced to anterior/posterior center of mass sway and the gain between postural sway and degree of sway referencing was manipulated (gain settings were 0.2, 1.0, and 1.8). These alterations in the sensory environment lead to observed changes in the temporal structure of the center of pressure (COP) trajectories. COP path length increased across gain settings while COP coefficient of variation decreased. The COP became increasingly more deterministic across more challenging sensory organization test (SOT) conditions and with increasing gain, and more nonstationary across more challenging SOT conditions and when the support surface was sway-referenced using a 1.8 gain setting. These findings indicate that changes in the responsiveness of the support surface and/or visual surround within each of the sway-referenced SOT conditions had functional consequences for the control of posture as evidenced by the variations in postural sway dynamics. The objective of this study is to describe the adaptability of the central nervous system to safely cross a narrow aperture when the space required for passage is transiently extended with external objects under different locomotor constraints. In one of four locomotion forms (normal walking, walking while holding a 63-cm horizontal bar with or without rotating the shoulders to cross a door opening, and wheelchair use), nine participants were asked to pass through an aperture created by two doors (the relative aperture widths were 1.02, 1.10, and 1.20 times their maximum horizontal dimension under each form of locomotion) without a collision. The kinematic analyses showed that, when the participants rotated their shoulders while walking and holding a bar, virtually the same locomotor patterns as those during normal walking were observed: shoulder rotation was regulated well in response to the width of an aperture, and no collisions occurred. When shoulder rotations were restricted while walking and holding a bar or using a wheelchair, a large reduction in the speed of movement was observed as the participants approached the door, and, furthermore, the modulation in speed was dependent on the width of the aperture. In addition, the participants crossed at the center of aperture more accurately; nevertheless, collision sometimes occurred (more frequently, during wheelchair use). These findings reveal that movement constraints on shoulder rotation are likely to be a critical factor in determining whether quick and successful adaptation takes place. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous research has shown that the task irrelevant size of familiar objects facilitates compatible precision and power grip responses. The present study examined whether the task irrelevant size of novel objects produces the same compatibility effect. However, the main objective of the study was to investigate whether visually primed precision and power grips are manually asymmetric. Experiment 1 showed that the size of a novel prime object does facilitate compatible precision and power grips, even when both the object itself and the grasp type are irrelevant to the current task. However, this effect was only found when the precision grip was made with the right hand (RH) and the power grip was made with the left hand (LH). When these grips were made with the opposite hands, the effect was absent. Experiment 2 replicated the LH bias for large objects and the RH bias for small objects when power and precision grip responses were replaced with simple LH and RH button-press responses. We have developed a tri-axial model of spatial orientation applicable to static 1 g and non-1 g environments. The model attempts to capture the mechanics of otolith organ transduction of static linear forces and the perceptual computations performed on these sensor signals to yield subjective orientation of the vertical direction relative to the head. Our model differs from other treatments that involve computing the gravitoinertial force (GIF) vector in three independent dimensions. The perceptual component of our model embodies the idea that the central nervous system processes utricular and saccular stimuli as if they were produced by a GIF vector equal to 1 g, even when it differs in magnitude, because in the course of evolution living creatures have always experienced gravity as a constant. We determine just two independent angles of head orientation relative to the vertical that are GIF dependent, the third angle being derived from the first two and being GIF independent. Somatosensory stimulation is used to resolve our vestibular model's ambiguity of the up–down directions. Our otolith mechanical model takes into account recently established non-linear behavior of the force–displacement relationship of the otoconia, and possible otoconial deflections that are not co-linear with the direction of the input force (cross-talk). The free parameters of our model relate entirely to the mechanical otolith model. They were determined by fitting the integrated mechanical/perceptual model to subjective indications of the vertical obtained during pitch and roll body tilts in 1 g and 2 g force backgrounds and during recumbent yaw tilts in 1 g. The complete data set was fit with very little residual error. A novel prediction of the model is that background force magnitude either lower or higher than 1 g will not affect subjective vertical judgments during recumbent yaw tilt. We studied the coordination of arm and wrist motion in a task requiring fine control of hand orientation. Subjects were instructed to reach and grasp one of two targets positioned in the frontal plane at various orientations. The task was performed under three target conditions: fixed orientation, predictably perturbed orientation, and randomly perturbed orientation. For fixed target orientations, the hand began to rotate to the required orientation from the beginning of the reach. Hand peak supination angles scaled linearly with target orientations. The trajectories of hand/arm joint angles also had a one-to-one relationship with different target orientations. These demonstrate that target orientation is a constraint on the hand/arm final orientation, a control variable to be specified in advance by the central nervous system (CNS). Under perturbation conditions, subjects were still able to complete the task smoothly. In the early trials of the predictable perturbation, the hand rotated first to the original target orientation and then corrected for the final target orientation. Initial corrections occurred about 200 ms after the onset of perturbation. This latency decreased as the subjects adapted to the perturbation, and the hand orientation trajectory shifted to match the unperturbed trajectory for the final orientation. By contrast, we observed no clear changes in orientation trajectory under the randomly perturbed conditions. These suggest that feedback control is important to the execution of the movement, but that the CNS tends to optimize feedforward planning rather than feedback correction when the disturbance information is predictable. In this study, solid, stable, and cost-effective optical phantoms of scalp–skull, white matter and grey matter are developed by inverse method. To begin with, to obtain a range of optical parameters, absorption and reduced scattering coefficients (μa and $$ {\mu }\ifmmode{'}\else$'$\fi_{{\text{s}}} , $$ respectively), 20 homogeneous phantoms were made of paraffin wax by using optically contrast black and highly scattering white colouring materials in different combination. By comparing the measured reflectance values for each phantom got from the four channel reflectometer with that obtained from steady-state diffusion equation, the values of μa and $$ {\mu }\ifmmode{'}\else$'$\fi_{{\text{s}}} $$ were determined. Next, phantoms which exhibit specific optical properties of scalp–skull, white and grey matter are developed iteratively by comparing actual reflectance measurements got by adjusting the colour concentration with the predicted reflectance values from the diffusion equation. This is done as follows: to obtain μa of 0.04 mm−1 for scalp–skull, 9.5 mg of black dye per 100 ml of wax added since more attenuation of light occurs in bone tissue. To obtain a $$ {\mu }\ifmmode{'}\else$'$\fi_{{\text{s}}} $$ 6.0 mm−1 for white matter in brain tissue, 190 mg of white dye per 100 ml of wax was used to facilitate more scatter of light. To investigate the strategies developed by the central nervous system to compensate for fatigue in muscles, we studied the changes in the relative mechanical contribution of the joint torques in a multi-joint movement following an isometric exhaustion test. Eighteen male subjects performed throws, moving the arm in the horizontal plane, before and after two fatigue protocols. Muscular fatigue was induced either in the distal (extensor digitorum communis) or in the proximal (triceps brachii) agonist muscle of the arm. The kinematic, kinetic and electromyographic parameters of the movement were analysed. The subjects produced two different coordinations following the fatigue protocols. In the proximal fatigue condition, the compensatory strategy involved increasing the contribution of the wrist. Little is known about the sensory characteristics and underlying mechanisms behind secondary hyperalgesia (HA) (2° HA). The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships between two different noxious stimuli, mechanical and cold on capsaicin-induced 2° HA. Fourteen healthy volunteers were exposed to three different cold stimuli (20, 10, 0°C) 30 s each, on both forearms. The cold stimuli were applied before (baseline) and 8 min after intradermal administration of 50-μg capsaicin to the forearm, distally to the injection site in the inspected area of 2° HA. Pain intensities were assessed immediately after each cold stimulus by means of a visual analogue scale (cold-VAS). Additionally, areas of mechanical HA (cm2) were assessed distally and proximally to the injection site at three different time points: 5, 8 (right after the second series of cold stimuli), and 30 min after the injection. No significant differences in cold-VAS were found between pre- and post-capsaicin injection at the tested forearm ( P= 0.334), whereas significant reduction from pre- to post-injection was found in cold-VAS in the control forearm ( P= 0.024). Further, 8 min after the injection, the cold stimulation led to an expansion of 2° HA area (from 5.1±1.38 to 11.4±1.72 cm2) to punctuate stimuli distally but not proximally to the injection site ( P<0.05). It is concluded that there is no HA to cold stimuli within the area of mechanical 2° HA. However, cooling acts as a conditioning stimulus and expands the area of capsaicin-induced punctuate HA. The purpose of the study was to develop a model of force variability for a fast action performed by a multi-effector system and to verify it for multi-finger quick force production. The experiments involved quick isometric contractions to different target force levels using different finger combinations. Force variance calculated over sets of trials for a multi-finger force production task showed non-monotonic single-peak profiles of force variance with a peak at a time between the times of the maxima of the force rate and of the total force. When analyzed in the four-dimensional space of finger forces, the variance peak was mostly expressed in the direction of the force rate, and was absent in the directions orthogonal to it. The non-monotonic time profile of the force variance could be reproduced by a model of force production, which assumes that each finger force profile is based on a template function scaled in duration and magnitude with two parameters assigned prior to each trial with some variability. The model allows decomposition of the force variance into two fractions related to variability in setting the magnitude and duration scaling parameters. The former fraction changes monotonically with time, while the latter shows a transient peak in the middle of the action. The model was able to reproduce experimental variance time profiles across conditions with the total error of under 8%. The results demonstrate, in particular, that fast multi-finger actions may show transient changes in motor variability in certain directions of the finger force space, particularly in the direction of the first force derivative, without any task-specific coordinating action by the controller. These findings require a reconsideration of some of the conclusions drawn in recent studies on the structure of motor variability in redundant multi-effector systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
