This paper deals with the analysis of changes in motoneuron (MN) firing evoked by repetitively applied stimuli aimed toward extracting information about the underlying synaptic volleys. Spike trains were obtained from computer simulations based on a threshold-crossing model of tonically firing MN, subjected to stimulation producing postsynaptic potentials (PSPs) of various parameters. These trains were analyzed as experimental results, using the output measures that were previously shown to be most effective for this purpose: peristimulus time histogram, raster plot and peristimulus time intervalgram. The analysis started from the effects of single excitatory and inhibitory PSPs (EPSPs and IPSPs). The conclusions drawn from this analysis allowed the explanation of the results of more complex synaptic volleys, i.e., combinations of EPSPs and IPSPs, and the formulation of directions for decoding the results of human neurophysiological experiments in which the responses of tonically firing MNs to nerve stimulation are analyzed. This paper investigates how the efficiency and robustness of a skilled rhythmic task compete against each other in the control of a bimanual movement. Human subjects juggled a puck in 2D through impacts with two metallic arms, requiring rhythmic bimanual actuation. The arms kinematics were only constrained by the position, velocity and time of impacts while the rest of the trajectory did not influence the movement of the puck. In order to expose the task robustness, we manipulated the task context in two distinct manners: the task tempo was assigned at four different values (hence manipulating the time available to plan and execute each impact movement individually); and vision was withdrawn during half of the trials (hence reducing the sensory inflows). We show that when the tempo was fast, the actuation was rhythmic (no pause in the trajectory) while at slow tempo, the actuation was discrete (with pause intervals between individual movements). Moreover, the withdrawal of visual information encouraged the rhythmic behavior at the four tested tempi. The discrete versus rhythmic behavior give different answers to the efficiency/robustness trade-off: discrete movements result in energy efficient movements, while rhythmic movements impact the puck with negative acceleration, a property preserving robustness. Moreover, we report that in all conditions the impact velocity of the arms was negatively correlated with the energy of the puck. This correlation tended to stabilize the task and was influenced by vision, revealing again different control strategies. Studying plasticity mechanisms with Professor John Rothwell was a shared highlight of our careers. In this article, we discuss non-invasive brain stimulation techniques which aim to induce and quantify plasticity, the mechanisms and nature of their inherent variability and use such observations to review the idea that excessive and abnormal plasticity is a pathophysiological substrate of dystonia. We have tried to define the tone of our review by a couple of Professor John Rothwell's many inspiring characteristics; his endless curiosity to refine knowledge and disease models by scientific exploration and his wise yet humble readiness to revise scientific doctrines when the evidence is supportive. We conclude that high variability of response to non-invasive brain stimulation plasticity protocols significantly clouds the interpretation of historical findings in dystonia research. There is an opportunity to wipe the slate clean of assumptions and armed with an informative literature in health, re-evaluate whether excessive plasticity has a causal role in the pathophysiology of dystonia. In this paper, we outline some important milestones in the history of the term "plasticity" in reference to the nervous system. Credit is given to William James for first adopting the term to denote changes in nervous paths associated with the establishment of habits; to Eugenio Tanzi for first identifying the articulations between neurons, not yet called synapses, as possible sites of neural plasticity; to Ernesto Lugaro for first linking neural plasticity with synaptic plasticity; and to Cajal for complementing Tanzi's hypothesis with his own hypothesis of plasticity as the result of the formation of new connections between cortical neurons. Cajal's early use of the word plasticity is demonstrated, and his subsequent avoidance of the term is tentatively accounted for by the fact that other authors extended it to mean neuronal reactions partly pathological and no doubt quite different from those putatively associated with normal learning. Evidence is furnished that in the first two decades of the twentieth century the theory was generally accepted that learning is based on a reduced resistance at exercized synapses, and that neural processes become associated by coactivation. Subsequently the theory fell in disgrace when Lashley's ideas about mass action and functional equipotentiality of the cortex tended to outmode models of the brain based on orthodox neural circuitry. The synaptic plasticity theory of learning was rehabilitated in the late 1940s when Konorski and particularly Hebb argued successfully that there was no better alternative way to think about the modifiability of the brain by experience and practice. Hebb's influential hypothesis about the mechanism of adult learning contained elements strikingly similar to the early speculations of James, Tanzi and Cajal, but Hebb did not acknowledge specifically these roots of his thinking about the brain, though he was fully aware that he had resurrected old ideas wrongly neglected for a long time. Lately the concept of neural plasticity has been complicated by attributing considerably different meanings to it. A scholarly paper by Paillard is used to show how an analysis in depth can clarify some confusion engendered by an unrestricted use of the concept and term of neural plasticity.

Long-range dependence is a characteristic property of successively produced time intervals, such as in un-paced or continuation tapping. We hypothesise in the present paper that serial dependence in such tasks could be related to a closed-loop regulation process, in which the current interval is determined by preceding ones. As a consequence, the quality of sensory feedback is likely to affect serial dependence. An experiment with human participants shows that diminished sensory information tends to increase the Hurst exponent for short inter-onset intervals and tends to decrease it for long intervals. A simulation shows that a simple auto-regressive model, whose order depends on the ratio between the inter-onset interval and an assumed temporal integration span, is able to account for most of our empirical results, including the duration specificity of long-range correlation. The article discusses various reports published within the issue, including one by Charlie Gross on the contributions of three scientists living in different epochs whose ideas were largely ignored by their contemporaries, one by Peter Hoffmann and colleagues on the cellular basis of stereopsis, and one by Maryse Lassonde and colleagues on the human perceptual plasticity.

How it happens that one can recognise oneself as the source of one’s own actions? This process of self-recognition is in fact far from trivial: although it operates covertly and effortlessly, it depends upon a set of mechanisms involving the processing of specific neural signals, from sensory as well as from central origin. In this paper, experimental situations where these signals can be dissociated from each other and where self-recognition becomes ambiguous will be used in healthy subjects and in schizophrenic patients. These situations will reveal that there are two levels of self-recognition, an automatic level for action identification, and a conscious level for the sense of agency, which both rely on the same principle of congruence of the action-related signals. The automatic level provides an immediate signal for controlling and adapting actions to their goal, whereas the conscious level provides information about the intentions, plans and desires of the author of these actions. The contribution of schizophrenic patients is to show that these two levels can be dissociated from each other. Whereas the automatic self-identification is functional in these patients, their sense of agency is deeply impaired: the first rank symptoms, which represent one of the major features of the disease, testify to the loss of the ability of schizophrenic patients to attribute their own thoughts, internal speech, covert or overt actions to themselves. Spreading depression (SD) is a neurophysiological phenomenon which occurs in the grey substance of the central nervous system. SD is characterised by a wave-like spread of depressed neuronal activity, by large ion shifts between intra- and extracellular space, by cellular depolarization, and by altered optical properties of the tissue giving rise to an intrinsic optical signal (IOS). In the shadow of SD further waves are difficult to trigger and such waves spread at lower velocity than usual. In this paper we examine the temperature dependence of the duration of this recovery (refractory) period and the temperature dependence of the duration of the IOS in the chicken retina. It is shown that these SD accompanying events are strongly dependent on temperature and that they are likely to depend on the metabolic rate in the tissue. The observed correlation of the duration of the IOS with the duration of the refractory period suggests that the IOS is a good indicator for the duration of the tissue recovery. Such a correlation would be of great value to the experimentalist who must know about the duration of the refractory period: while the latter is laborious to determine, recording the IOS is convenient. Watt et al. (Exp Brain Res, 2000, 135:411-416) suggested that a reduced field of view causes objects to appear closer than their physical distance. This suggestion is based on the observation that individuals terminated open-loop prehension prematurely when pretending to grasp a paper rectangle initially viewed through a reduced field of view. We tested Watt et al.’s suggestion in an open-loop pointing task. In experiment 1, 21 participants pointed at targets in three locations (20, 30 and 40 cm relative to the starting position) in three viewing conditions (full, 16° and 4° field of view). No difference in accuracy was found between conditions but the reduced field of view led to an increase in end-point variability across trials. We interpret these results as indicating that a reduced field of view decreases precision but does not necessarily affect object localisation. In experiment 2, we asked participants to reach-and-grasp a real object under the same three open-loop viewing conditions but without vision following movement onset. The experimental design ensured that haptic feedback was available, which could be used to calibrate reaching movements. We found that the reduced field of view caused no changes in grasp but we observed changes in the transport kinematics consistent with increased variability in the perceptual estimate of target location. Notably there were no changes in the spatial path (expected from movements to a closer location). In experiment 3, we repeated the Watt et al. design but removed vision and forced participants to rely on memory. In this condition we found the same undershoots as described by Watt et al. We conclude that a reduced field of view is neither necessary nor sufficient for underestimation and suggest that a reduced field of view decreases precision. This can cause participants to undershoot and/or alter the movement kinematics but we argue that such findings cannot be ascribed unambiguously to perceptual underestimation as they may reflect strategic alterations in behaviour. In a recent paper it was claimed that in the majority (9/15) of subjects studied the soleus H-reflex increases progressively during the swing phase of walking. This pattern was at odds with our numerous observations made since 1986, as was the very large proportion of subjects reported to exhibit this pattern. We therefore reinvestigated the issue in an extensive series of experiments and detailed subsequent analysis on 21 subjects. In most subjects (13/21) the soleus H-reflex was completely inhibited during most or all of the swing phase (group A). In 8/21 subjects (group B) there was a small H-reflex mean 16% (SD=10.6%) of the value in quiet standing present during most or all of swing, but there was no systematic modulation pattern; the reflex amplitude fluctuated in a seemingly random manner. The difference between the two somewhat arbitrary groups could not be explained on the basis of greater electromyographic activity in the tibialis anterior (TA) during the swing phase or at the time of heel contact. However, by normalizing the mean level of TA activity to the peak level, the ratio was significantly greater for the group A subjects. This highlights the importance of reciprocal inhibition in accounting for the suppression of the soleus H-reflex in swing. In the discussion we emphasize that the presence of a small H-reflex during swing in the group B subjects is unlikely to have any functional role. What is of functional importance is the strong inhibition of the H-reflex during swing which reflects the ensemble of neural mechanisms at play to prevent the unwanted activation of the powerful ankle extensor muscles. Object-based visual attention is observed when the benefit of attending to one element in a display extends to other elements that are part of the same perceptual object. Apperceptive agnosia is an object identification deficit in which spatial attention is preserved but object-based attention is impaired. Some debate exists regarding the extent to which the object-based impairment can be attributed to perceptual mechanisms that are specifically involved in grouping and segmentation of a scene, as opposed to early sensory processes. In the present paper we show that random visual noise is sufficient to eliminate the object benefit, a result inconsistent with the view that grouping mechanisms are responsible for the effect. The results have implications for an understanding of apperceptive agnosia, and for an understanding of object-based attention more generally. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study addresses the issue of the role of the cerebellum in human withdrawal-reflex conditioning by comparing data from patients with pure cerebellar diseases (CBL, n=10) and from cerebellar patients showing additional extracerebellar symptoms (CBL+, n=10 ) with those from 11 control subjects (CTRL). During recording sessions, the standard delay-conditioning paradigm with paired-trials was used with tone as the conditioned stimulus (CS). Parameters of the conditioned muscle responses are analyzed in an accompanying paper. Here, we focus on the unconditioned muscle response. A train of current pulses (unconditioned stimulus, US) evoked a lower-limb withdrawal reflex (unconditioned response, UR), which was recorded electromyographically from leg muscles. During the recording sessions with CTRL subjects, UR amplitudes decayed from initially 100% to approximately 50% at the end of the session. This type of decay was clearly less pronounced in the CBL group and minimal in the CBL+ group. Furthermore, the CBL group exhibited UR onsets that were delayed by 20 ms compared with those from CTRL subjects. Although the ranges of measurements characterizing the URs of a given cerebellar patient tested in the paired-trial paradigm overlapped with those of control subjects, the statistically significant differences observed at the group level suggest deficits in the performance of the reflex responses. The delayed URs in patients and the different type of decay of UR amplitudes in repetitively evoked withdrawal reflexes constitute evidence that the cerebellum is critically involved in the control of these UR parameters. Spreading depression (SD) is a pronounced but transient disturbance of cellular homeostasis in the neuropil of the central nervous system which spreads in a wave-like manner across the tissue. At the wavefront the cells depolarize and a distinct ion redistribution between intra- and extracellular space is observed. In the aftermath of SD the recovering tissue is refractory: during an early absolute refractory period no further SD can be triggered, during the subsequent relative refractory period SD waves spread at lower velocity than usual. In this paper we shall examine the influence of temperature on SD triggering and on SD propagation in the chicken retina (retinal spreading depression, rSD) and we shall examine rSD triggering and rSD propagation in the refractory period. It will be shown that cooling decreases the threshold of rSD triggering, i.e. it becomes easier to trigger rSD when the temperature is reduced. At the same time cooling slows rSD propagation. In contrast, during the relative refractory period triggering rSD is more difficult than usual while rSD propagation is also slowed. These results demonstrate that the propagation velocity of rSD is not correlated with the triggering threshold. In particular, the propagation velocity of rSD must not be used to predict the influence of experimental conditions on the triggering threshold. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increased use of epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (eSCS) for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) has highlighted the need for a greater understanding of the properties of reflex circuits in the isolated spinal cord, particularly in response to repetitive stimulation. Here, we investigate the frequency-dependence of modulation of short- and long-latency EMG responses of lower limb muscles in patients with SCI at rest. Single stimuli could evoke short-latency responses as well as long-latency (likely polysynaptic) responses. The short-latency component was enhanced at low frequencies and declined at higher rates. In all muscles, the effects of eSCS were more complex if polysynaptic activity was elicited, making the motor output become an active process expressed either as suppression, tonic or rhythmical activity. The polysynaptic activity threshold is not constant and might vary with different stimulation frequencies, which speaks for its temporal dependency. Polysynaptic components can be observed as direct responses, neuromodulation of monosynaptic responses or driving the muscle activity by themselves, depending on the frequency level. We suggest that the presence of polysynaptic activity could be a potential predictor for appropriate stimulation conditions. This work studies the complex behaviour of spinal circuits deprived of voluntary motor control from the brain and in the absence of any other inputs. This is done by describing the monosynaptic responses, polysynaptic activity, and its interaction through its input–output interaction with sustain stimulation that, unlike single stimuli used to study the reflex pathway, can strongly influence the interneuron circuitry and reveal a broader spectrum of connectivity. In activities such as dancing and sports, people synchronize behaviors in many different ways. Synchronization between people has traditionally been characterized as either perfect mirroring (1:1 in-phase synchronization, spontaneous synchrony, and mimicry) or reflectional mirroring (1:1 antiphase synchronization), but most activities require partners to synchronize more complicated patterns. We asked visually coupled dyads to coordinate finger movements to perform multifrequency ratios (1:1, 2:1, 3:1, 4:1, and 5:1). Because these patterns are coordinated across and not just within individual physiological and motor systems, we based our predictions on frequency-locking dynamics, which is a general coordination principle that is not limited to physiological explanations. Twenty dyads performed five multifrequency ratios under three levels of visual coupling, with half using a subcritical visual information update rate. The dynamical principle was supported, such that multifrequency performance tends to abide by the strictures of frequency locking. However, these constraints are relaxed if the visual information rate is beyond the critical information update rate. An analysis of turning points in the oscillatory finger movements suggested that dyads did not rely on this visual information to stabilize coordination. How the laboratory findings align with naturalistic observations of multifrequency performance in actual sports teams (Double Dutch) is discussed. A specific feature of motor unit (MU) firing behaviour is rhythmic trains of single discharges at low rate resulting from the prolonged motoneuronal afterhyperpolarization. However, some MUs exhibit occasional doublets with uniquely short interspike intervals (2.5-20.0 ms). Motoneuronal delayed depolarization is commonly accepted to be doublet underlying mechanism. Apart from doublets, much scarcer MU triple discharges were described, but their mechanisms are disputable. The aim of the present study was to analyse MU triplet firing origin in healthy humans. MU triple discharges occasionally arising during gentle voluntary muscle contractions were compared with those arising in axons during motor nerve stimulation. Firing pattern was analysed in 109 MUs of four muscles: the tibialis anterior, the flexor carpi ulnaris, the abductor pollicis brevis, and the abductor digiti minimi. Our findings present evidence that during voluntary contractions two kinds of MU triplet firing can be occasionally observed: 'true' motoneuronal triplets (interspike intervals of 3.6-17.3 ms) with the delayed depolarization as the possible underlying mechanism and axonal triple discharges including the M-response and F-wave. The findings can be useful not only for understanding mechanisms of the very rare motoneuronal firing in healthy humans but also for estimation of pathological triplet firing origin. When we explore the visual environment around us, we produce sequences of very precise eye movements aligning the objects of interest with the most sensitive part of the retina for detailed visual processing. A copy of the impending motor command, the corollary discharge, is sent as soon as the first saccade in a sequence is ready to monitor the next fixation location and correctly plan the subsequent eye movement. Neurophysiological investigations have shown that chemical interference with the corollary discharge generates a distinct pattern of spatial errors on sequential eye movements, with similar results also from clinical and TMS studies. Here, we used saccadic inhibition to interfere with the temporal domain of the first of two subsequent saccades during a standard double-step paradigm. In two experiments, we report that the temporal interference on the primary saccade led to a specific error in the final landing position of the second saccade that was consistent with previous lesion and neurophysiological studies, but without affecting the spatial characteristics of the first eye movement. On the other hand, single-step saccades were differently influence by the flash, with a general undershoot, more pronounced for larger saccadic amplitude. These findings show that a flashed visual transient can disrupt saccadic updating in a double-step task, possibly due to the mismatch between the planned and the executed saccadic eye movement. Previous studies have found that affective states with high motivational intensity narrow attentional scope, whereas affective states with low motivational intensity broaden attentional scope. This conclusion, however, is based on fragmented evidence based on several separate studies. The present study tests this conclusion within a single study using both behavioral (Experiment 1) and neurophysiological (Experiment 2) measures. Experiment 1 showed that individuals had the global precedence effect in the neutral affective state. However, the global precedence effect was reduced for affective states with high motivational intensity, whereas the global precedence effect was not significantly enhanced for those with low motivational intensity. Experiment 2 replicated these results with event-related potential (ERP) recording. ERP results showed that affective states with high motivational intensity induced smaller N2 and greater late positive potential (LPP) amplitudes than low motivational intensity and neutral affective states. However, no differences were found between the low motivational intensity and neutral affective states. Furthermore, smaller LPP predicted the tendency a global attentional focus in the frontal and central areas and larger LPP predicted a narrowed focus in the frontal area. In this study, a noninvasive electroencephalography-based neurofeedback method is applied to train volunteers to deliberately increase gamma band oscillations (40 Hz) in the visual cortex. Gamma band oscillations in the visual cortex play a functional role in perceptual processing. In a previous study, we were able to demonstrate that gamma band oscillations prior to stimulus presentation have a significant influence on perceptual processing of visual stimuli. In the present study, we aimed to investigate longer lasting effects of gamma band neurofeedback training on perceptual processing. For this purpose, a feedback group was trained to modulate oscillations in the gamma band, while a control group participated in a task with an identical design setting but without gamma band feedback. Before and after training, both groups participated in a perceptual object detection task and a spatial attention task. Our results clearly revealed that only the feedback group but not the control group exhibited a visual processing advantage and an increase in oscillatory gamma band activity in the pre-stimulus period of the processing of the visual object stimuli after the neurofeedback training. Results of the spatial attention task showed no difference between the groups, which underlines the specific role of gamma band oscillations for perceptual processing. In summary, our results show that modulation of gamma band activity selectively affects perceptual processing and therefore supports the relevant role of gamma band activity for this specific process. Furthermore, our results demonstrate the eligibility of gamma band oscillations as a valuable tool for neurofeedback applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The neuronal population vector (NPV) for movement direction is the sum of weighted neuronal directional contributions. Based on theoretical considerations, we proposed recently that the sharpness of tuning will impact the directional precision, accuracy, and length of the NPV, such that sharper tuning will yield NPV with higher precision, higher accuracy, and shorter length (Mahan and Georgopoulos in Front Neural Circuits 7:92, ). Furthermore, we proposed that controlling the inhibitory drive in a local network could be the mechanism by which the sharpness of directional tuning would be varied, resulting in a continuous specification and control of movement's directional precision, accuracy, and speed (Mahan and Georgopoulos in Front Neural Circuits 7:92, , Fig. 5). As a first step in testing this idea, here we analyzed data from 899 cells recorded in the motor cortex during performance of a center → out task. There were two major findings. First, directional selectivity varied with cell activity, such that it was higher in cells with lower mean discharge rates. And second, NPVs calculated from subsets of cells with higher directional selectivity (and, correspondingly, lower mean discharge rates) were more accurate (i.e., closer to the movement), precise (i.e., less variable), and shorter (i.e., slower; Schwartz in Science 265:540-542, ). These findings confirm our predictions above made from modeling (Mahan and Georgopoulos in Front Neural Circuits 7:92, ) and provide a simple mechanism by which desired attributes of the directional motor command can be implemented. We hypothesize that the inhibitory drive in a local network is controlled directly and independently of recurrent collaterals or common excitatory inputs to other cells. This could be achieved by a private excitation/inhibition of key inhibitory interneurons in a way similar to that in operation for Renshaw cells in the spinal cord. Bálint syndrome is a combination of severe deficits affecting spatial attention, visuo-motor control and oculomotor function. While the severe restriction of attention (simultanagnosia) and impairments of visually guided reaching have been extensively studied, oculomotor apraxia has received comparatively little attention. The main explanatory hypothesis of oculomotor apraxia is that it is a direct consequence of the severe restriction of attention. Here, we examined in a patient with Bálint syndrome to what extent local image features such as luminance and contrast predict whether a region will be fixated or not. During the viewing of natural photographs, the patient made saccades of very small amplitude, but showed strongly increased fixation duration. In addition, the horizontal and vertical range of fixations was severely restrained compared to control subjects. When analysing the local feature content at fixation, we found that central fixations of the patient contained less local luminance and contrast than fixations of controls while he made fixations to peripheral image regions with disproportionately high luminance and contrast. These findings suggest that while our patient gazes at central regions irrespective of their local feature content, he only looks to the periphery when his gaze is captured by particularly conspicuous features. We propose that oculomotor apraxia in Bálint syndrome reflects a combination of biased representations within a parietal priority map and increased fixational activity due to biased interactions within the oculomotor network. Fast cyclic movements and discrete motor acts are controlled differently, presumably because fast cyclic tasks are more automated, thereby depending on different circuits. If fast cyclic movements are made less predictable (e.g., by mixing frequencies), one would predict that their control will be less automated, requiring increased activity in motor cortical areas. The present functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study investigated whether switching between frequencies increases the motor cortex activity compared to movements at single rates. Therefore, hand tapping at mixed frequencies ('mixed') was compared with hand tapping at 0.4 ('low frequency'), 0.8 ('mid-frequency'), and 1.4 Hz ('high frequency'). Oxy-hemoglobin (HbO) and deoxy-hemoglobin (HbR) concentration changes were studied in eleven healthy subjects with eight-channel fNIRS covering the hand motor cortex. Repeated-measures ANOVAs revealed significant main effects for the type of task in HbO and HbR. Post hoc analysis showed a larger HbO increase and HbR decrease for the mixed task compared to the low- and high-frequency conditions. In addition, the mid-frequency condition revealed a smaller HbR decrease compared to the mixed task. Single frequency data indicated the existence of separate motor control systems for low- and high-frequency movements. There is abundant evidence that the cerebral white matter and in particular the corpus callosum show several structural abnormalities in both schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disease (BD). However, which cognitive functions are impaired as a result of these anomalies is still unclear. Previous behavioural tests of interhemispheric crosstalk have shown a differential impairment in SCZ with interhemispheric transmission time, as tested with the Poffenberger paradigm, essentially normal but with an abnormally enhanced interhemispheric summation effect, as tested with the redundant signal effect. The present study was inspired by this discrepancy and by the more general question of a possible overlap between the pathophysiology of SCZ and BD. We tested both SCZ and BD patients in the Poffenberger paradigm and redundant signal effect and found a similar dissociation, namely a normal interhemispheric transfer time and an abnormal redundant signal effect. The only difference between the two groups was a selective slowing of speed of response of the dominant right hand in the SCZ group suggesting an impairment of left hemisphere functions. The VESPA (visual-evoked spread spectrum analysis) method estimates the impulse response of the visual system using a continuously varying stimulus. It has been used recently to address both basic cognitive and neurophysiologic questions as well as those surrounding clinical populations. Although the components of the average VESPA response are highly reminiscent of the early components of the visual-evoked potential (VEP) when measured over midline occipital locations, the two responses are acquired in different ways and, thus, they cannot be regarded as being equivalent. To further characterize the relationship between the VESPA and the VEP and the generative mechanisms underlying them, we recorded EEG from 31 subjects in response to checkerboard-based VEP and VESPA stimuli. We found that, across subjects, the amplitudes of the VEP C1 component and the VESPA C1 component were highly correlated, whereas the VEP P1 and the VESPA P1 bore no statistical relationship. Furthermore, we found that C1 and P1 amplitudes were significantly correlated in the VESPA but not in the VEP. We believe these findings point to the presence of common generators underlying the VESPA C1 and the VEP C1. We argue further that the VESPA P1, in light of its strong relationship to the VESPA C1, likely reflects further activation of the same cortical generators. Given the lack of correlation between the VEP P1 and each of these three other components, it is likely that the underlying generators of this particular component are more varied and widespread, as suggested previously. We discuss the implications of these relationships for basic and clinical research using the VESPA and for the assessment of additive-evoked versus phase-reset contributions to the VEP. The reach-to-grasp movement is composed of a number of movement elements including hand transport, hand shaping, and grasping. These movement elements are featured in grasping when it is guided by vision, when it is guided by haptic input from the non-reaching hand or other body parts, and when it is guided by off-line perceptual (remembered) knowledge. An unanswered question is how is the reach-to-grasp movement achieved when all information about the target must be acquired by the grasping hand? The answer to this question was obtained by asking participants to reach for three randomly presented food items that varied in size: an orange slice, a small round donut ball, or a blueberry. In order to constrain the grasping pattern, participants were asked to pick up an item with the intention of placing it in the mouth. Thus, in the unsighted condition, participants did not know which item they were reaching for until they made haptic contact with it. Hand transport, shaping, and grasping were examined using frame-by-frame video analysis and linear kinematics. These measures showed that in unsighted reaching, hand transport first served to establish haptic contact between either the second or third digit and the target. After haptic identification of the target, the hand and/or grasping digits adjusted their trajectory, reshaped, and reoriented for grasping. A comparison of haptically guided grasping and visually guided grasping indicated that the two were very similar. Prior reports have described a transient and focal decline in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)-induced motor evoked potential (MEP) amplitude following fatiguing motor tasks. However, the neurophysiological causes of this change in MEP amplitude are unknown. The aim of this study was to determine whether post-task depression of MEPs is associated with repetitive central motor initiation. We hypothesized that MEP depression is related to repeated central initiation of motor commands in task-related cortex independent of motor fatigue. Twenty healthy adults had MEPs measured from the dominant first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle before and after six different tasks: rest (no activity), contralateral fatiguing hand-grip, ipsilateral fatiguing hand-grip, contralateral finger tapping, ipsilateral finger tapping, and imagined hand-grip (motor imagery). Changes in MEPs from baseline were assessed for each task immediately following the task and at 2-min intervals until MEPs returned to a stable baseline. Measures of subjective effort and FDI maximum voluntary contractions (MVC) were also recorded following each task. A statistically significant drop in MEP amplitude was noted only with contralateral finger tapping and imagined grip. Changes in MEP amplitude did not correlate with subjective fatigue or effort. There was no significant change in FDI MVCs following hand-grip or finger-tapping tasks. This study extends our knowledge of the observed decline in MEP amplitude following certain tasks. Several studies showed that mental rotation of body parts is interfered with by manipulation of the subjects' posture. However, the experimental manipulations in such studies, e.g., to hold one arm flexed on one's own chest, activated not only proprioceptive but also self-tactile information. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the combination of self-touch and proprioception is more effective than proprioception alone in interfering with motor imagery. In Experiment 1 right- and left-handers were required to perform the hand laterality task, while holding one arm (right or left) flexed with the hand in direct contact with their chest (self-touch condition, STC) or with the hand placed on a wooden smooth surface in correspondence with their chest (no self-touch condition, NoSTC); in a third neutral condition, subjects kept both arms extended (neutral posture condition, NPC). Right-handers were slower when judging hand laterality in STC with respect to NoSTC and NPC, particularly when the sensory manipulation involved their dominant arm. No posture-related effect was observed in left-handers. In Experiment 2, by applying the same sensory manipulations as above to both arms, we verified that previous results were not due to a conflict between perceived position of the two hands. When humans use vision to gauge the travel distance of an extended forward movement, they often underestimate the movement's extent. This underestimation can be explained by leaky path integration, an integration of the movement to obtain distance. Distance underestimation occurs because this integration is imperfect and contains a leak that increases with distance traveled. We asked human observers to estimate the distance from a starting location for visually simulated movements in a virtual environment. The movements occurred along curved paths that veered left and right around a central forward direction. In this case, the distance that has to be integrated (i.e., the beeline distance between origin and endpoint) and the distance that is traversed (the path length along the curve) are distinct. We then tested whether the leak accumulated with distance from the origin or with traversed distance along the curved path. Leaky integration along the path makes the seemingly counterintuitive prediction that the estimated origin-to-endpoint distance should decrease with increasing veering, because the length of the path over which the integration occurs increases, leading to a larger leak effect. The results matched the prediction: movements of identical origin-to-endpoint distance were judged as shorter when the path became longer. We conclude that leaky path integration from visual motion is performed along the traversed path even when a straight beeline distance is calculated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When a moving featureless contour is viewed through a stationary circular aperture that occludes the contour's endpoints and the contour moves in a direction non-parallel to its orientation, observers report the contour's direction of motion as perpendicular to the contour's orientation regardless of its actual direction. In typical studies of this aperture effect on motion perception, observers made perceptual judgments of the line's motion. The aperture effect was not measured when observers actively controlled the line's motion. In addition, effects of attentional load on the aperture effect were not measured. Here, we demonstrated that attentional load influenced the aperture effect. Active control reduced the aperture effect, but did not eliminate it. Results have theoretical implications for motion perception and practical implications for the design of technologies that limit an observer's field-of-view such as surgical cameras. Motor learning is a process that extends beyond training sessions. Specifically, physical practice triggers a series of physiological changes in the CNS that are regrouped under the term 'consolidation' (Stickgold and Walker ). These changes can result in between-session improvement or performance stabilization (Walker ). In a series of three experiments, we tested whether consolidation also occurs following observation. In Experiment 1, participants observed an expert model perform a sequence of arm movements. Although we found evidence of observation learning, no significant difference was revealed between participants asked to reproduce the observed sequence either 5 min or 24 h later (no between-session improvement). In Experiment 2, two groups of participants observed an expert model perform two distinct movement sequences (A and B) either 10 min or 8 h apart; participants then physically performed both sequences after a 24-h break. Participants in the 8-h group performed Sequence B less accurately compared to participants in the 5-min group, suggesting that the memory representation of the first sequence had been stabilized and that it interfered with the learning of the second sequence. Finally, in Experiment 3, the initial observation phase was replaced by a physical practice phase. In contrast with the results of Experiment 2, participants in the 8-h group performed Sequence B significantly more accurately compared to participants in the 5-min group. Together, our results suggest that the memory representation of a skill learned through observation undergoes consolidation. Recent studies suggest that the left hemisphere is dominant for the planning of motor actions. This left-hemisphere specialization hypothesis was proposed in various lines of research, including patient studies, motor imagery studies, and studies involving neurophysiological techniques. However, most of these studies are primarily based on experiments involving right-hand-dominant participants. Here, we present the results of a behavioral study with left-hand-dominant participants, which follows up previous work in right-hand-dominant participants. In our experiment, participants grasped CD casings and replaced them in a different, pre-cued orientation. Task performance was measured by the end-state comfort effect, i.e., the anticipated degree of physical comfort associated with the posture that is planned to be adopted at movement completion. Both left- and right-handed participants showed stronger end-state comfort effects for their right hand compared to their left hand. Vestibular reflexes act to stabilize the head and eyes in space during locomotion. Head stability is essential for postural control, whereas retinal image stability enhances visual acuity and may be essential for an animal to distinguish self-motion from that of an object in the environment. Guinea pig eye and head movements were measured during passive whole-body rotation in order to assess the efficacy of vestibular reflexes. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) produced compensatory eye movements with a latency of ~7 ms that compensated for 46% of head movement in the dark and only slightly more in the light (54%). Head movements, in response to abrupt body rotations, also contributed to retinal stability (21% in the dark; 25% in the light) but exhibited significant variability. Although compensatory eye velocity produced by the VOR was well correlated with head-in-space velocity, compensatory head-on-body speed and direction were variable and poorly correlated with body speed. The compensatory head movements appeared to be determined by passive biomechanical (e.g., inertial effects, initial tonus) and active mechanisms (the vestibulo-collic reflex or VCR). This study aims to quantify the separate contributions of muscle force feedback, muscle spindle activity and co-contraction to the performance of voluntary tasks (“reduce the influence of perturbations on maintained force or position”). Most human motion control studies either isolate only one contributor, or assume that relevant reflexive feedback pathways during voluntary disturbance rejection tasks originate mainly from the muscle spindle. Human ankle-control experiments were performed, using three task instructions and three perturbation characteristics to evoke a wide range of responses to force perturbations. During position tasks, subjects ( n = 10) resisted the perturbations, becoming more stiff than when being relaxed (i.e., the relax task). During force tasks, subjects were instructed to minimize force changes and actively gave way to imposed forces, thus becoming more compliant than during relax tasks. Subsequently, linear physiological models were fitted to the experimental data. Inhibitory, as well as excitatory force feedback, was needed to account for the full range of measured experimental behaviors. In conclusion, force feedback plays an important role in the studied motion control tasks (excitatory during position tasks and inhibitory during force tasks), implying that spindle-mediated feedback is not the only significant adaptive system that contributes to the maintenance of posture or force. Topographical patterns of bipolar EEG coherence are frequency specific, indicating the presence of diverse neuroanatomical and neurophysiological factors in EEG production. Bipolar EEG coherence values were calculated at 50 frequency bins ranging from 3 to 28 Hz for 39 coherence pairs. Data were derived from 4.25 min of resting EEG obtained from 106 healthy adult male subjects and analyzed in 0.5 Hz bins by Fourier transform methods. Frequency bands were clearly separated at 8.5 and 13 Hz, with a less distinct separations at 6 and 20 Hz. Within pair (non-topographic) and across pair (topographic), measures gave similar patterns of separation. Significant pathways were primarily anterior–posterior interhemispheric or perpendicular to the anterior–posterior axis. There was little difference between left and right for comparable pairs. Theta band coherent activity involves distinct midline and temporal sources, with temporal sources showing anterior/posterior differentiation. In contrast, alpha activity has a distinct posterior focus, while beta activity shows no clear global structure. A spatially homogeneous model based on characteristics of thalamocortical connectivity accounts for much of the data, but departures from the model indicate the contribution of other neural factors to coherence. We previously observed that index finger flexion, with the prone hand, is preceded by an inhibitory postural adjustment (iAPA) in the Biceps Brachii (BB) electromyogram (EMG). The aim of this work is to locate the iAPA origin by testing the changes in spinal and cortico-spinal excitability during its development. Subjects were asked to flex their index finger, at will after an acoustic signal, while surface EMGs from Flexor Digitorum Superficialis (prime mover) and from BB (postural muscle) were recorded. In each experiment, tendon (T) reflexes in the resting BB and motor-evoked potentials elicited by magnetic cortical stimulation (CMEPs) in the resting, or in the slightly contracted BB, were collected both during the iAPA development and before the go signal. When BB was fully relaxed, T-reflexes falling in the iAPA temporal window were un-modulated, while CMEPs were significantly inhibited; this inhibition occurred, on average, 37 ms before the iAPA onset indicating that iAPA sets up and develops at supraspinal level. Changes in CMEPs’ excitability clearly anticipated the iAPA onset (about 50 ms) also when cortico-spinal excitability was probed in the active BB, thus indicating that this effect is likely due to a de-recruitment of spinal motoneurones. Thus, (1) iAPA is associated with voluntary movement even when postural muscles are at rest, (2) during iAPA spinal motoneurones are more likely disfacilitated than inhibited, and (3) the iAPA timing is regulated similarly to prime mover activation. Crush lesion of a skin nerve is followed by sprouting of myelinated (A) and unmyelinated (C) afferent fibers into the distal nerve stump. Here, we investigate quantitatively both ongoing activity and activity evoked by mechanical or thermal stimulation of the nerve in 43 A- and 135 C-fibers after crush lesion of the sural nerve using neurophysiological recordings in anesthetized rats. The discharge patterns in the injured afferent nerve fibers and in intact (control) afferent nerve fibers were compared. (1) Almost all (98%) A-fibers were mechanosensitive, some of them exhibited additionally weak cold/heat sensitivity; 7% had ongoing activity. (2) Three patterns of physiologically evoked activity were present in the lesioned C-fibers: (a) C-fibers with type 1 cold sensitivity (low cold threshold, inhibition on heating, high level of ongoing and cold-evoked activity; 23%): almost all of them were mechanoinsensitive and 40% of them were additionally heat-sensitive; (b) C-fibers with type 2 cold sensitivity (high cold threshold, low level of ongoing and cold-evoked activity; 23%). All of them were excited by mechanical and/or heat stimuli; (c) cold-insensitive C-fibers (54%), which were heat- and/or mechanosensitive. (3) The proportions of C-fibers exhibiting these three patterns of discharge to physiological stimuli were almost identical in the population of injured C-fibers and in a population of 91 intact cutaneous C-fibers. 4. Ongoing activity was present in 56% of the lesioned C-fibers. Incidence and rate of ongoing activity were the same in the populations of lesioned and intact type 1 cold-sensitive C-fibers. The incidence (but not rate) of ongoing activity was significantly higher in lesioned type 2 cold-sensitive and cold insensitive C-fibers than in the corresponding populations of intact C-fibers (42/93 fibers vs. 11/72 fibers). Aim of the research was to examine similarities and differences between the periods of experiencing visually stimulated directed speech–language information and periods of undirected attention. The examined group comprised N = 64 children, aged 4–5, with different speech–language disorders (developmental dysphasia, hyperactive syndrome with attention disorder, children with borderline intellectual abilities, autistic complex). Theta EEG was registered in children in the period of watching and describing the picture (“task”), and in the period of undirected attention (“passive period”). The children were recorded in standard EEG conditions, at 19 points of EEG registration and in longitudinal bipolar montage. Results in the observed age-operative theta rhythm indicated significant similarities and differences in the prevalence of spatial engagement of certain regions between the two hemispheres at the input and output of processing, which opens the possibility for more detailed analysis of conscious control of speech–language processing and its disorders. In behavioral as well as neuroanatomical studies, the medial area of the parabrachial complex has been associated with flavor avoidance learning (FAL). Within this medial area the medial external subnucleus (PBNme) has been linked to gustatory–visceral convergence or integration, which is apparently required for flavor-illness learning. Therefore, this area may play an important role in sensorial (gustatory and/or visceral) processing and/or in the gustatory–visceral integrative processes implicated in FAL. The present study used a lesion approach in rats to explore the effects of damage to the medial-external medial parabrachial nucleus (PBNme) in FAL using different FAL paradigms and hypertonic NaCl as the aversive agent. In the first of two experiments, PBNme-lesioned rats were subjected to a hypertonic NaCl-induced concurrent FAL. In this modality, both the gustatory and the visceral stimulation take place simultaneously. In the second experiment, rats with lesions similarly located (see above) and rats with lesions in the external area of the lateral parabrachial nucleus (PBNle) were subjected to a delayed-sequential FAL induced by the same chemical agent. The results show a clear disruptive effect of the hypertonic NaCl-induced concurrent FAL (experiment 1), as well as of NaCl-induced delayed-sequential FAL in animals lesioned in the PBNme (experiment 2). However, animals lesioned in the PBNle do learn the delayed-sequential task. It has been postulated that the central nervous system (CNS) can tune the mechanical behavior of a joint by altering reflex stiffness in a task-dependant manner. However, most of the evidence supporting this hypothesis has come from the analysis of H-reflexes or electromyogram (EMG) responses. Changes in overall stiffness have been documented but, as yet, there is no direct evidence that the CNS can control reflex stiffness independently of the intrinsic stiffness. We have used a novel identification algorithm to estimate intrinsic and reflex stiffness and feed it back to subjects in real-time. Using this biofeedback, subjects could learn to control reflex stiffness independently of intrinsic stiffness. At low torque levels, subjects could vary their reflex stiffness gain by a factor of 4, while maintaining elastic stiffness and torque constant. EMG measurements confirmed that the contraction levels of the ankle muscles remained constant. Further experiments showed that subjects could change their reflexes rapidly on command. Thus, we conclude that the CNS can control reflex stiffness independently and so has great flexibility in adjusting the mechanical properties of a joint to meet functional requirements. We have studied the contribution of feedback signals originating from one of the “form-processing” extrastriate cortical areas, area 21a (A21a), to orientation selectivity of single neurons in the ipsilateral area 17 (A17). Consistent with previous findings, reversible inactivation (cooling to 5–10°C) of area 21a resulted in a substantial reduction in the magnitude of the maximum response ( R max) of A17 cells accompanied by some changes in the half-width at half-height of the R max (HWHH). By fitting model functions to the neurons’ response profiles we found that in the vast majority of orientation-tuned A17 cells tested (30/39, 77%), inactivation of A21a resulted in a “flattening” of their orientation-tuning curves. It is characterised by a substantial reduction in the R max associated with either a broadening of the orientation-tuning curves (17 cells) or a relatively small reduction (12 cells) or no change (1 cell) in the HWHH. When the “flattening” effect was quantified using a simple ratio index or R/ W, defined as R max/HWHH, we found that R/ W was significantly reduced during inactivation of A21a. The change in R/ W is strongly correlated with the change in the maximum slope of the orientation-tuning curves. Furthermore, analysis of response variability indicates that “signal-to-noise” ratio of the responses of A17 neurons decreases during inactivation of A21a. Our results suggest that the predominately excitatory feedback signals originating from A21a play a role in enhancing orientation selectivity of A17 neurons and hence are likely to improve overall orientation discriminability. In human beings, inhibitory jaw reflexes can be depressed by painful stimulation of remote parts of the body. Since similar effects can be produced by the stress of anticipating pain, we wished to investigate whether the effects of remote painful stimuli are dependent on stress. EMG recordings were made from a masseter muscle while subjects maintained activity in the muscle at ∼12.5% of maximum using visual feedback. The protocols involved three sequences: (1) “standard controls” in which reflexes were evoked by electrical test stimuli applied to the upper lip; (2) “standard conditioning” in which painful electrical conditioning stimuli were applied over the sural nerve 100 ms before the test stimuli; (3) “random sequences” in which test-only and conditioning-test combinations were employed in a double-blind, random, order. Data are presented as means ± SEMs. In the standard controls, the stimuli evoked clear inhibitory reflexes (latency 37 ± 1.3 ms, duration 62 ± 5.6 ms; n = 10) in all the subjects. During standard conditioning, the reflex magnitude was reduced significantly (by 50.0 ± 8.5%, P = 0.0002, one-sample t-test). When the test-only and conditioning-test responses were extracted from the random sequences, there was also a significant reduction in the reflex magnitude following conditioning (by 34.6 ± 5.5%, P = 0.0002, one-sample t-test) albeit less so than between the standard sequences ( P = 0.03, paired t-test). A second series of experiments suggested that these lesser effects during the random sequences were not substantially due to any loss of temporal summation of the conditioning mechanisms. The evidence for this was that application of pairs of conditioning stimuli did not produce a significantly greater effect than single conditioning stimuli within a random sequence (39.9 ± 9.6% as opposed to 32.7 ± 9.1% reductions in the reflex, P = 0.117, paired t-test). Therefore since any stress in the random sequences would not have been “tied” to the conditioned responses alone, the effects of remote painful stimuli on this inhibitory jaw reflex cannot be entirely secondary to stress.
