The efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion in the treatment of depression has been fully recognized internationally. However, its central mechanism is still not developed into a unified standard, and it is generally believed that the central mechanism is regulation of the cortical striatum thalamic neural pathway of the limbic system. In recent years, some scholars have applied functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to study the central mechanism and the associated brain eects of acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for depression. This study reviews the acupuncture and moxibustion treatment of depression from two aspects: (1) fMRI study of the brain function related to the acupuncture treatment of depression: dierent acupuncture and moxibustion methods are summarized, the fMRI technique is elaborately explained, and the results of fMRI study of the eects of acupuncture are analyzed in detail, and (2) fMRI associated “brain functional network” eects of acupuncture and moxibustion on depression, including the eects on the hippocampus, the amygdala, the cingulate gyrus, the frontal lobe, the temporal lobe, and other brain regions. The study of the eects of acupuncture on brain imaging is not adequately developed and still needs further improvement and development. The brain function networks associated with the acupuncture treatment of depression have not yet been adequately developed to provide a scientific and standardized mechanism of the eects of acupuncture. For this purpose, this study analyzes in-depth the clinical studies on the treatment of anxiety and depression by acupuncture and moxibustion, by depicting how the employment of fMRI technology provides significant imaging changes in the brain regions. Background and purpose: The abnormalities in EEG of stroke-patients increase the risk of epilepsy but their significancy for poststroke outcome is unclear. This presented study was aimed at determining the prevalence and nature of changes in EEG recordings fromthe stroke hemisphere and fromthe contralateral hemisphere. Another objective was to determine the significance of abnormalities in EEG in the first days of stroke for the post-stroke functional status on the acute and chronic phase of disease. Methods: In all qualified stroke-patients, EEGwas performed during the first 3 days of hospitalization and at discharge. The correlation between EEG abnormalities both in the stroke hemisphere and in the collateral hemisphere with the neurological and functional state in various time points was performed. Results: One hundred thirty-one patients were enrolled to this study. Fifty-eight patients (44.27%) had abnormal EEG. The sporadic discharges and generalized rhythmic delta activity were the most common abnormalities in the EEG. The neurological status on the first day and the absence of changes in the EEG in the hemisphere without stroke were the independent factors for good neurological state (0-2 mRS) at discharge. The age-based analysis model (OR 0.981 CI 95% 0.959-1.001, p = 0.047), neurological status on day 1 (OR 0.884 CI 95% 0.82-0.942, p < 0.0001) and EEG recording above the healthy hemisphere (OR 0.607 CI 95% 0.37-0.917, p = 0.028) had the highest prognostic value in terms of achieving good status 90 days after stroke. Conclusions: Abnormalities in EEG without clinical manifestation are present in 40% of patients with acute stroke. Changes in EEG in acute stroke are associated with a poor neurological status in the first days and poor functional status in the chronic period of stroke. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate the changes in dynamic voxel mirror homotopy connection (dVMHC) between cerebral hemispheres in patients with asthma. Methods: Our study was designed using a case-control method. A total of 31 subjects with BA and 31 healthy subjects with matching basic information were examined using rsfMRI. We also calculated and obtained the dVMHC value between the cerebral cortexes. Results: Compared with the normal control group, the dVMHC of the lingual gyrus (Ling) and the calcarine sulcus (CAL), which represented the visual network (VN), increased significantly in the asthma group, while the dVMHC of the medial superior frontal gyrus (MSFG), the anterior/middle/posterior cingulate gyrus (A/M/PCG), and the supplementary motor area (SMA) of the sensorimotor network decreased significantly in the asthma group. Conclusion: This study showed that the ability of emotion regulation and the efficiency of visual and cognitive information processing in patients with BA was lower than in those in the HC group. The dVMHC analysis can be used to sensitively evaluate oxygen saturation, visual function changes, and attention bias caused by emotional disorders in patients with asthma, as well as to predict airway hyperresponsiveness, inflammatory progression, and dyspnea. Methods: We used spike-wave index (SWI), which means the percentage of the spike and slow wave duration to the total non-REM (NREM) sleep time, as the grouping standard. A total of 14 children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%), 21 children with SeLECTS (SWI < 50%), and 20 healthy control children were recruited for this study. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (Chinese version) (WISC-IV). Magnetic source activity was assessed using magnetoencephalography calculated for each frequency band using the accumulated source imaging (ASI) technique. Results: Children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) had the lowest cognitive function scores, followed by those with SeLECTS (SWI < 50%) and then healthy controls. There were significant differences in the localization of magnetic source activity between the three groups: in the alpha (8–12 Hz) frequency band, children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) showed deactivation of the medial frontal cortex (MFC) region; in the beta (12–30 Hz) frequency band, children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) showed deactivation of the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) segment; and in the gamma (30–80 Hz) frequency band, children in the healthy group showed activation of the PCC region. Conclusion: This study revealed significant decreases in cognitive function in children with SeLECTS (SWI ≥ 50%) compared to children with SeLECTS (SWI < 50%) and healthy children, as well as significant differences in magnetic source activity between the three groups. The findings suggest that deactivation of magnetic source activity in the PCC and MFC regions is the main cause of cognitive function decline in SeLECTS patients with some frequency dependence. Objective: Recently, the area of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) targeting neurological rehabilitation has been advanced as a potential treatment for post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI). However, the underlying mechanisms remains to be elusived. This study aims to figure out cerebral functional manipulation of rTMS in patients with PSCI through using the resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI).Methods: Thirty patients with PSCI were recruited and randomly allocated into two groups: the rTMS intervention group and control group. The rTMS intervention group was given 20 min of 5 Hz rTMS (or control) over left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) besides routine cognitive intervention training for 3 consecutive weeks, five times per week, on weekdays. Cognition performance was assessed by the Minimum Mental State Examination (MMSE) and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA). Neural activity and functional connectivity (FC) changes were acquired by rs-fMRI with fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) and seed-based correlation analysis.Results: Cognition improvements were observed both in rTMS intervention group and control group (P < 0.01), while the rTMS group got more significant improvent than control group (P < 0.05). To be specified, compared with the control group, the rTMS group got higher fALFF values in these brain regions including superior temporal gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus and parahippocampal gyrus, while lower fALFF values in middle temporal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus and fusiform gyrus. In addition, the rTMS group showed increased FC between LDPFC and toprecuneus, inferior temporal gyrus, middle and inferior frontal gyrus and marginal gyrus, while decreased FC between LDPFC and middle temporal gyrus and thalamus.Conclusion: The increase and decrease of neural activity and FC in cognition-related regions detected by rs-fMRI are good indicators to clarify the underlining mechanisms of rTMS on PSCI.

As one of the most common sleep-related respiratory disorders, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is characterized by excessive snoring, repetitive apnea, arousal, sleep fragmentation, and intermittent nocturnal hypoxemia. Focused on the resting-state brain imaging techniques, we reviewed the OSA-related resting-state electroencephalogram and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) studies. Compared with the healthy control group, patients with OSA presented increased frontal and central δ/θ powers during resting-state wakefulness, and their slow-wave activity showed a positive correlation with apnea–hypopnea index. For rsfMRI, the prefrontal cortex and insula may be the vital regions for OSA and are strongly related to the severity of the disease. Meanwhile, some large-scale brain networks, such as the default-mode network, salience network, and central executive network, play pivotal roles in the pathology of OSA. We then discussed the contribution of resting-state brain imaging as an evaluation approach for disease interventions. Finally, we briefly introduced the effects of OSA-related physiological and mental diseases and discussed some future research directions from the perspective of resting-state brain imaging.
