Online activities have spiked due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including language learning activities. As the world is aging, this affects senior citizens too. Yet, few studies have been conducted studying online (language) learning in this age-group. Moreover, no concrete pointers exist on how to go about such an online language learning course. This paper examines what should be considered when designing and implementing online language learning courses for seniors. To that end we present data from 73 senior language learners from two independent language learning contexts: the Netherlands and Scotland. The data were collected between May 2020 and August 2021. Data includes spoken and written samples from lessons, focus groups, interviews and questionnaires. Given the qualitative nature of the data and the aim of identifying patterns of meaning across the respective datasets, a reflexive thematic analysis (TA) approach was adopted. We employed an inductive approach to coding, using both semantic (explicit or overt) and latent (implicit, underlying) coding frameworks, in order to inform two overarching themes: "Navigating the digital highway" and "Camera ready for new friends." As the number of elderly citizens in general and the number of persons with dementia in particular rises, the importance of educating geriatric health care professionals increases. Recruitment is, however, impaired by negative stereotypes and insecurity. Previous research has shown that contact with the field of dementia care is important for students' motivation for choosing this career path. This paper presents an extracurricular psychomotor intervention program in which students through eight visits to elderly persons with dementia carry out an intervention involving direct individual contact. Eight psychomotor therapy students participated in follow-up focus group interviews. The purpose was to explore the motivational dynamics that make these experiences meaningful to students. Qualitative analysis of the students' self-assessed outcomes revealed three themes: The relational encounter, Discovering the person, and Making a difference. In combination these themes show important nuances to existing literature on student career dreams by pointing to the benefits of attending to the moment to moment changes in the care situation. Faculty development programs (FDPs) are an effective, evidence-based method of promoting knowledge, skills and self-efficacy of faculty. However, implementation and sustainability of curricular capstone projects developed by faculty as part of these programs are rarely reported. Challenges to sustaining programmatic implementation of interprofessional FDP curricular content into academic and clinical settings over time were not found in peer-reviewed literature. To better understand the sustained impact of our geriatrics-focused FDP, we explored barriers and facilitators to implementation and sustainability of capstone projects designed by faculty Scholars in our FDP. Thematic analysis of virtual interviews with 17 Scholars revealed several key factors that impacted the implementation and Dynamic sustainability of curricular projects. Three major themes and sub-themes were identified: Project Implementation (Supportive Factors, Hindering Factors and Filling in Gaps in the Field); Pedagogical Development (Enhancement of Skills and Culture Change); and Sustainability Impact (Project Sustainability, Career Development and Passing the Torch). Results suggest it is important to ensure logistical support, dedicated time, and organizational or institutional support. Implementation of geriatrics-focused FDPs provides an evidence-based approach to sustainability. Further study of the ongoing barriers and facilitators to sustainability is encouraged. The demanding and challenging nature of care for geriatric patients requires appropriate preparation of health care professionals. However, the willingness of nursing students to work in geriatric nursing care is mostly at a low level. The EAging_C project has been developed to investigate the relationship between nursing teachers' and students' attitudes towards older people and its impact on career decisions regarding working in a geriatric setting. This study uses an explanatory sequential mixed-method. The study has been conducted in a Polish academic setting in teams of geriatric nursing practical training teachers and their students. Quantitative and qualitative data have been collected in three stages. Kogan's Attitudes Towards Older People questionnaire has been used to collect quantitative data among teachers and students. By developing two questionnaires for the semi-structured interviews (one for students and one for teachers) qualitative data was collected that deepened the quantitative data collected. The investigation conducted in this project allows us to provide an insight into the issue of the unwillingness to work in a geriatric setting by nursing graduates. The development of a skilled research workforce in aging is fundamental to understanding conditions associated with growing older and extending healthy, active years of life. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supports the training of health scientists, and its National Institute on Aging (NIA) prioritizes the professional development of investigators with an interest in aging. Since 1987, NIA's Summer Institute on Aging Research, renamed the Butler-Williams (B-W) Scholars Program in 2013, has offered an intensive one-week experience on issues, opportunities, and challenges of research on aging, with emphasis on disparities and health equity. The first 30 years of the Program are described in this report, including its history, selected curriculum highlights, Scholar outcomes, and qualitative data from faculty, and the program's impact on the training, growth, and development of scientists in aging research. Questions raised over a decade ago by the Committee on the Future Health Care Workforce for Older Americans Board on Health Care Services are revisited, and recommendations for the future are provided. This important Program remains an exemplar for the training and development of health scientists for careers that advance biomedical research and emphasize an equitable understanding of factors related to extending healthy years of life. Interdisciplinary education and research foster cross disciplinary collaboration. The study of age and aging is complex and needs to be carried out by scholars from myriad disciplines, making interdisciplinary collaboration paramount. Non-formal, extracurricular, and interdisciplinary networks are increasingly filling gaps in academia's largely siloed disciplinary training. This study examines the experiences of trainees (undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate students) who belonged to one such network devoted to interdisciplinary approaches to education and research on aging. Fifty-three trainees completed the survey. Among respondents, some faculties (e.g., Health Sciences) were disproportionately represented over others (e.g., Business, Engineering, and Humanities). Most trainees valued their participation in the interdisciplinary network for research on aging. They also valued expanding their social and professional network, the nature of which was qualitatively described in open-text responses. We then relate our findings to three types of social capital: bonding; bridging; and linking. Finally, we conclude with recommendations for the intentional design and/or refinement of similar networks to maximize value to trainees, provide the skills necessary for interdisciplinary collaboration, and foster egalitarian and representative participation therein. This study explored an academic Interprofessional Geriatric Case Competition (IGCC) experience with a focus on medically underserved populations. Our aims were to assess: the perceptions of and knowledge of older adult populations; and the overall IPE (Interprofessional Education) experience of the IGCC participants. A multi-method study approach was used, the Facts on Aging Quiz assessed knowledge and the Carolina Opinions on Care of Older Adults (COCOA) assessed perceptions. A qualitative thematic approach was utilized to explore the themes of the IPE experience. There was a moderate correlation (0.37, p <.001) between perception and knowledge data of the respondents (N = 94), current professionals (54%) and enrolled students (46%). The three emerged themes were as follows: interprofessional/holistic practice; culturally responsive/older adult centered practice; and the impact of Covid-19. The implementation of IPE that centers medically underserved populations has the potential to: enhance students learning, influence the quality of care, and provide pathways to working within these specific populations. The Canadian Association on Gerontology's Student Connection facilitates a national Student Representative program to promote the field of gerontology at local post-secondary institutions. Student Representatives are expected to host professional development and networking events on their campus to bring together students interested in the field of aging. Student-run groups help foster interest in aging-related careers and research, yet few studies explore how these groups are developed and sustained. As part of this quality improvement project, we examined (1) who participates as a Student Representative; (2) why students choose to participate in the program; and (3) how Student Representatives fulfil their role (including barriers and facilitators). We conclude with a discussion of the challenges that the Student Connection's executive committee has faced supporting this national network and identify opportunities to further enhance the program. Despite the growing prevalence of dementia, few models of training for health professional students on this topic have been formally evaluated or widely disseminated. The Dementia Friends (DF) initiative is part of a global movement to improve the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. The impact of these sessions on the dementia-related knowledge and attitudes of health professional trainees has not been adequately assessed. Health professional students (medicine n = 70, physical therapy n = 30, pharmacy n = 28) participated in one-hour DF information sessions, offered in-person or via videoconference. The Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS), a validated 20-item questionnaire, was administered before and after each session. Pre- and post-session DAS scores were compared using a paired t-test. Students' dementia-friendly action plans were analyzed qualitatively. Of 128 students, 102 (80%) completed both the pre- and post-DAS. The mean DAS score increased significantly from 105.8 (12.3) to 120.8 (10.5) following the DF sessions (p <.001). Students' dementia-friendly action plans included improving communication, promoting quality of life, and learning more about dementia. The DF information session model significantly increased the knowledge and positive attitudes of health professional students toward those living with dementia. Geriatric patients with complex health care needs can benefit from interprofessional (IP) care; however, a major gap in health professional education is determining how to prepare future providers for IP collaboration. Effective IP team behavior assessment tools are needed to teach, implement, and evaluate IP practice skills. After review of IP evaluation tools, the Standardized Patient Encounter Evaluation Rubric (SPEER) was created to evaluate team dynamics in IP practice sites. Independent sample t-tests between faculty and learner SPEER scores showed learners scored themselves 15 points higher than their faculty scores (p <.001). Cronbach's α showed high internal consistency (α = 0.91). Paired t-tests found that learners identified improvements in the team's ability to address the patient's education needs and to allow the patients to voice their expectations. Faculty identified improvements in the teams' ability to make recommendations. Faculty evaluations of learner teams showed improvements in raw ratings on all but two items. Qualitative data analysis for emergent themes showed learners desired team functioning feedback and how teamwork could improve to provide optimal IP care. The need for interprofessional teamwork and the global challenges for health care systems of dramatically increasing numbers of older adults have received increased recognition in gerontological and geriatrics education. The authors report on the pilot development of a hybrid course on aging and health for graduate-level health professions students from Norway, Canada, and the United States. International faculty from partnering universities developed, taught, and evaluated the course. Course assignments included online forum postings, reflections, and a problem-based learning group assignment and presentation. Directed readings and discussion included topics related to health care systems and services in the three participating countries, teamwork, and patient-centered care. To evaluate the course, quantitative and qualitative data were collected and analyzed. Results indicate a significant impact on student learning outcomes, including understanding of issues in international aging and health, attitudes and skills in teamwork, and application to clinical practice. This course clearly established the importance of developing innovative interprofessional educational experiences that respond to the increasingly universal impacts of aging populations on health and social care systems around the world. This study explored the preferences of different stakeholders when translating geriatrics and gerontology concepts into children's picture books, with the aim of developing a feasible model. Following the stakeholder engagement design and qualitative method, three types of stakeholders were enrolled: medical and educational professionals (n = 9), older adults aged over 65 (n = 9), and children aged 9 to 12 (n = 7). Individual interviews and focus groups were used to collect the views of the stakeholders as a basis for revising the picture book, as well as to analyze the opinions of different stakeholders. Results show that medical professionals' recommendations focused on intellectual content (18.0%) and written verbal narratives (16.5%). Education experts tended to recommend textual verbal narratives (18.8%) and storyline (6.0%). Older adults's suggestions focused on story content (6.8%) and included detailed descriptions of older adults. Children's suggestions were focused on plot arrangement (2.3%) and text size (2.3%). Mean scores for the appropriateness of the three picture book materials increased after the stakeholder engagement, with the communication literacy picture book achieved statistical significance (p =.042). It is concluded that the stakeholder engagement design is a viable development model for achieving intergenerational understanding, realistic and theoretical goals, and bridging heterogeneity across the stakeholders. Background/Objective Medical student geriatrics education using community-based volunteer older persons, known as a Senior Mentor Program (SMP), began decades ago. Though these programs have been described and evaluated against curriculum objectives, the full breadth of students' learning from SMPs has not been reported. Methods We conducted a qualitative study using content analysis of reflections of Year 2 medical students submitted during a single visit home-based SMP. Written reflections of 102 randomly selected students from 2016–2018 were inductively coded and grouped into themes. Older persons from the SMP site assisted in coding and quotation selection. Results We discerned six themes from the evaluation of student reflections: student insight, interview and exam, social community, challenges with aging, strengths (responses to challenges), and physical infrastructure. Universities are experiencing shifts in age distributions of students, with fewer younger students and an increase in the number of people mid-life and beyond seeking education and job training. Thus, there are strong arguments for universities to embrace opportunities to increase age-diversity on campus. This qualitative study explores the challenges, opportunities, and strategies related to university age-diversity from the perspective of Admissions and Career Services staff from one midwestern university. From focus group data, six subthemes were identified as challenges (fitting in; acclimating; stressors; career concerns; return on investment; and ageism/undervaluing age diversity), three subthemes were identified as assets (intentionality; experienced students; and age diverse educational settings) and eight strategies were recommended to better serve an age-diversity student body (support groups; familial supports; social opportunities; job placement; financial aid; targeted outreach; flexibility in learning; and staff support). This article discusses the benefits and challenges of serving older students from the perspective of staff and administrators and provides action steps for universities to promote age-diversity on campus. Internationally, universities are recognizing the importance of understanding and enhancing age as a component of diversity and inclusion efforts through the Age-Friendly University (AFU) initiative. Eastern Michigan University (EMU) joined the AFU Network in 2018 and has been conducting an environmental scan of supports, weaknesses, and opportunities for age inclusiveness since this time. This article describes a qualitative exploratory study undertaken as part of the Environmental Scan that aimed to understand the perspectives of university stakeholders on supports, barriers, and opportunties to age-friendliness. Twenty-eight participant stakeholders from divisions across the university campus were purposefully sampled to engage in in-depth interviews that were recorded and transcribed. Qualitative thematic findings generated through constant comparative method of analysis include: Experience Sharing, Need for Intentionality in Age-Friendly Efforts, and Existence of Age-Inclusivity Barriers and Opportunities for Change. For gerontological educators, topics such as mortality, loss, and end-of-life issues often emerge or are central in their courses. However, teaching in the era, and aftermath, of the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened the salience of death and loss, raising questions about best practices and teaching pedagogies to support student learning amidst a global crisis. This qualitative study utilized written narratives collected during the pandemic from students enrolled in an undergraduate thanatology course. Content analysis of written narratives (n = 44) revealed three themes that can help inform strategies to best support student learning during challenging times. Participants desired more flexibility; compassion and understanding; and more targeted resources and socioemotional support. Results have immediate implications for educators teaching during the pandemic and for years to come. We provide recommendations for teaching and learning support, as well as advocate for more university and community-based thanatology and gerontology education offerings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The goal of the study was to diagnose the needs of instructors working in the area of the digital inclusion of persons who are excluded, at risk of exclusion, marginalized, and discriminated against in terms of using new technologies. The research focused on the phenomenon of the digital divide as seen from the perspective of digital literacy educators of older adults. The study was conducted in 2019 in Poland, using a qualitative research methodology (a structured in-depth interview) and interpretative paradigm. The respondents were 8 specialists, educators of older adults, representing different types of institutions dealing with the digital divide: a activity center, a public library, a nursing home, an NGO, and a University of the Third Age. Triangulation of the results led to several important conclusions regarding to the expectations, experiences, challenges and postulated supporting actions related to digital inclusion. Based on the results gathered, we have noticed that educators readily share their didactic and organizational experience. The respondents were open to the development of their own teaching competences, and recognized the role of lifelong learning. They often highlighted that the digital education of older adults is only one of many additional activities. The activities to improve the digital literacy of older adults are implemented as part of their non-formal education (i.e. it is carried out by educators holding no formal qualifications). For this reason, the teachers expect content-related and methodological support most of all, as well as the promotion of the idea of lifelong education (including digital literacy development) in society. Two Dutch undergraduate programs in applied gerontology have teamed up with older volunteers to educate students in collaborating with older adults in the field of age-friendly service development. The research question of this study was: What are the motives and meanings of the older volunteers concerning their participation in an undergraduate program? An explorative descriptive qualitative design was used to study the motives and meanings of the older volunteers through semi-structured interviews (n = 11) and a focus group interview (n = 4). Two themes and nine categories emerged: (1) Personal norms and values (categories: responsible life attitude, contribution, self-determination), (2) Personal gain (categories: intergenerational education, personal development, staying healthy, pleasure, feeling appreciated, feeling connected). Personal norms and values and personal gains are meaningful to older volunteers in applied gerontology education. Myths and stereotypes of sex in late-life prevail. Unless the workforce is prepared to address the sexual health needs of older adults, it is difficult to disrupt ageism in professional settings. We evaluated a two-day project-based workshop designed for undergraduate students about sex and aging. Using content analysis, we examined open-ended responses from 41 undergraduate students. Three themes depicted the value of experiential project-based learning. Participants (1) appreciated the opportunity to develop transferable pre-professional skills, (2) demonstrated comfort and utilized creative strategies to discuss a sensitive topic, and (3) attained a greater awareness of late-life sexual health and behavior. Providing training to undergraduate students helped close the knowledge gap about issues of late-life sexual health and behaviors. Participants developed skills for translating knowledge into practical resources. Although benefits of service-learning and interprofessional education (IPE) have been well documented to be effective for students in gerontology, few curricula appear to integrate both aspects into a single experience for undergraduate students in public health. We discuss the development and implementation of an IPE service-learning health promotion program embedded within two different departments at a mid-sized university. Students worked in interdisciplinary teams and acquired IPE learning outcomes while they engaged in their first experiences working with diverse older adults at a low-income independent-living housing community. Twenty-five students each team-taught two sessions on nutrition, physical activity, and stress reduction techniques in a 10-week program. Qualitative and quantitative results showed significant learning outcomes from the students about the needs of the aging population and increased comfort working with seniors. Fall-related injuries and mortality are increasing in older adults. Evidence suggests a need for a multifactorial, interprofessional approach to reducing falls. The Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) utilizes an interprofessional approach to care and serves a high-risk population. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of an EBP falls prevention training program conducted at a PACE. The program was a revision of an established program and was led by an interprofessional team. The evaluation used a mixed-methods approach to assess program quality, learning and self-efficacy gains, and intended behavioral changes. Quantitative evaluation demonstrated program satisfaction and qualitative responses identified the depth and interprofessional delivery as favorable. Qualitative data identified opportunities to enhance content and learning design. Overall knowledge gains were statistically significant (mean difference 5%), with the greatest gains related to the evidence base (mean difference 2.67%). Self-efficacy ratings increased significantly after each session. Participants noted changes to team function and a willingness to consider practice changes as a result of the training. The findings support the effectiveness of this interprofessional, EBP training program on falls prevention practices in a PACE and highlight the value of a multifaceted assessment and iterative development. A shortage of individuals in academic geropsychology positions further perpetuates the shortage of clinicians trained to meet the needs of the aging population. Barriers to recruiting geropsychology trainees into academia and what attracts trainees into career paths within geropsychology are not understood. The current mixed-methods study examined 1) geropsychology trainees' (n = 28) knowledge and attitudes toward work in clinical or academic positions and 2) professional geropsychologists (n = 67) activities, career expectations, ideal activities, and work/life balance. We asked geropsychology trainees to estimate the amount of time their supervisors spent in clinical, research, education, and administrative activities, and professional geropsychologists reported how they currently spent their time in these same activities. We conducted qualitative interviews asking geropsychology trainees about experiences in academic or clinical settings and geropsychologists about career expectations, opportunities, and work/life balance. Geropsychology trainees had less accurate estimates of academic work time compared to clinically focused work time. Trainee interviews revealed negative perceptions of the university system, including bureaucracy, low salary, and perceived workload. Professional geropsychologists reported high agreement between actual and ideal work time with some individual differences. Each group discussed work–life balance, based on career stage or work setting. Interventions for recruiting more geropsychology trainees into academic jobs are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to assess undergraduate students' perceptions of older adults over the semester in an interprofessional service-learning course that implemented a health promotion program called Bingocize® at community facilities for older adults. Students were surveyed at the beginning of the semester, at midterm, and at the conclusion of the course. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected to assess the students' perceptions and experiences. Results suggest that a course on aging that includes interprofessional service-learning in geriatric settings is associated with a significant increase in positive perceptions of the older adult population. This study focuses on nurse educators' perspectives on teaching gerontology within nursing curricula in two cultures. An increasing aging multi-cultural population with large caring needs requires not only informal elder care provided by family members, but also professional nursing staff trained in gerontology. The aim of this study was to explore how Swedish and Thai nurse educators describe the role of teaching gerontology within nursing educations in Sweden and Thailand. Method: Qualitative open-ended interviews with 13 Swedish and Thai nurse educators were conducted and analyzed with qualitative content analysis. Findings: There is a lack of gerontological nursing competence in faculty, as well as bureaucracy impeding necessary changes of curricula, together with difficulties in highlighting positive and cultural aspects of aging. Conclusions: Pedagogical strategies need to be developed by nurse educators specialized in cross-cultural gerontology to improve current and future nursing educations in both countries. Intergenerational service-learning in higher education positively affects older adults and students, but little is known about the effectiveness of interdisciplinary, reverse mentoring programs that use technology as the medium of bringing generations together. This study describes an intergenerational service-learning program that utilizes reverse mentoring within higher education, the "Engaging Generations Program," at a midsized public university in New England where students help older adults learn about technology, and students gain communication and teaching skills. In this article, we outline how the program was implemented, present quantitative data on participation outcomes for students and older adults and qualitative data from older adults, and discuss best practices. Analysis of pre/post surveys found that students' attitudes toward aging improved (p < 0.01) and older adults interest in technology improved (p < 0.05) after program participation. Best practices identified included: multiple meetings with the same pair to deepen friendships, in-person training for student leaders, student responsibility for scheduling, tailoring sessions to each participant, student documentation of meetings, and active involvement by community partners. Introduction: Increased exposure to geriatrics throughout a student’s professional education has been reported to improve the desire to work in this area; however, factors that influence the perception of geriatric physical therapy may prohibit students from actively seeking those experiences. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of geriatric physical therapy by first-year graduate physical therapy students. Design: A qualitative case study research approach was performed. Method: Three focus groups were completed using students enrolled in their second semester of a graduate-level physical therapy program. Dialogue was reviewed and coded by three raters. Twenty-five subcategories of open-coding terms were triangulated and grouped into 4 themes via axial coding. Results: Four themes emerged: (1) ageism exists in health care, (2) personal and professional experiences serve as a framework for students’ perception of geriatrics, (3) interpersonal relationships formed within geriatric practice are highly valued, and (4) additional contextual barriers exist in geriatrics. Conclusions: To meet the needs of a highly skilled geriatric workforce, students should participate in enhanced geriatric experiences in didactic coursework as well as within interprofessional geriatric clinics throughout their education. For geropsychology to flourish in the years ahead, we need scientists to advance knowledge and teachers to draw new professionals into the field. In this project the authors surveyed 100 geropsychologists who completed a doctoral degree in clinical or counseling psychology about their experience with training for research and teaching. The majority were currently conducting some degree of research (38%) and some form of teaching (45%). The majority of ratings for components of research training were in the “very good to excellent” range, whereas elements of teacher training were rated in the “poor to good” range, though there was variability among persons and components. Qualitative comments revealed enthusiasm for research and teaching roles and a need to enhance our training of geropsychologists as educators. In courses where topics are sensitive or even considered taboo for discussion, it can be difficult to assess students’ deeper learning. In addition, incorporating a wide variety of students’ values and beliefs, designing instructional strategies and including varied assessments adds to the difficulty. Journal entries or response notebooks can highlight reflection upon others’ viewpoints, class readings, and additional materials. These are useful across all educational levels in deep learning and comprehension strategies assessments. Journaling meshes with transformative learning constructs, allowing for critical self-reflection essential to transformation. Qualitative analysis of journals in a death and dying class reveals three transformative themes: awareness of others, questioning, and comfort. Students’ journal entries demonstrate transformative learning via communication with others through increased knowledge/exposure to others’ experiences and comparing/contrasting others’ personal beliefs with their own.
