A study conducted in Italy evaluated the feasibility of expanding the services offered by local pharmacies to include screening for dry eye disease (DED). The study collected data from over 8,000 individuals who participated in a nationwide screening initiative. The results showed that a significant number of patients with dry eye symptoms were dispensed with tear substitutes for symptomatic treatment. Female sex, Asian ethnicity, and the degree of meibomian gland loss were found to be associated with dry eye symptoms. The study suggests that pharmacy-based screening programs could improve access to rapid diagnostic testing and optimize therapy for DED. However, further research is needed to evaluate the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of these programs. [Extracted from the article]
