The process of bioconversion of solid organic wastes through vermicomposting justifies the environmental message for sustainability such as reduce, recycle and reuse of wastes. In the present study, wastes derived from two different types of paper mill sludge (primary and secondary), was used for their bioconversion through the vermicomposting process using an indigenous species of earthworm (Perionyx excavatus). The maturity and stability stage of vermicompost production was assessed using FT-IR, GC-MS and TG analyses. During vermicomposting, different biochemical functional groups present in the wastes have shown differential chemical alteration and turnover as revealed by FT-IR spectroscopy. This study has also confirmed the trend of biodegradation of complex substances like lignin, cellulose, proteins etc. and thereby demonstrates the extent of mineralization. TG spectral analysis had revealed a mass loss of 80% and 71% in vermicompost produced from primary and secondary sludge respectively. GC-MS studies have also shown the presence of several humic acids like octadecanoic acid, heptadecanoic acid etc. in the decomposing substances demonstrating as an indicator of the maturity of products. This was further confirmed by the decrease of humification index which focuses the combined action of both earthworms and microbes in the degradation of organic wastes. The present study has highlighted the role of an indigenous earthworm in converting specific industrial wastes especially by recording the point of maturation using humic acids an indicator of the quality of decomposing of wastes following several instrumental applications.

The one-dose package is useful for patients who are prescribed multiple medications. However, the one-dose packaging of hygroscopic medications is difficult because the quality of the medication is reduced by moisture absorption. Cellophane polyethylene laminating paper at 20 μm or 30 μm thickness and glassine papers are widely used for one-dose packaging. The basic characteristics, such as water permeability, of these packaging papers have been demonstrated by companies; however, the quality changes of hygroscopic medications stored in these packaging papers are poorly understood. In this study, we compared the relative humidity in packaging papers and the qualities of the stored hygroscopic medications among 20 μm and 30 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper and glassine paper. Glucobay® 50 mg, Magmitt® 330 mg, and Phosblock® 250 mg tablets were used as hygroscopic medications to be packaged and the relative humidity, weight change, and hardness of tablets were measured. The relative humidity decreased in the order of glassine paper, 20 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper, and 30 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper. Additionally, tablets inside the 30 μm thick cellophane polyethylene laminating paper gained the least weight. Therefore, tablets in a 30 μm thick polyethylene laminating paper absorb less moisture than those in other papers. However, the effect was less pronounced at high temperature, even if the relative humidity remained the same. The generation of three-dimensional superb packages of compact hexagonal periodic assembly with multifaceted layers was demonstrated using Poly (styrene-butylcrylate-acrylic acid) on glass substrates. The synthesized P(St-BA-AA) microspheres were used to formulate a fast drying UV curable terpolymer microspheres printing ink for the generation of colloidal crystal microdots on ink-jet paper with remarkable colours. The terpolymer microspheres and their formulated terpolymer ink undergo self-assembly to form blue monochromatic and viewing angle dependent tunable colours, thus affirming the photonic nature of the generated colloidal crystal films. Unlike other printing techniques which usually make use of specialized tools, this study generated a well ordered coloured tunable assembly of spherical shaped core-shell colloidal crystal microdots on the surface of an inkjet-paper by manually writing the as-synthesized P(St-BA-AA) UV curable printing ink microdots on it. The TEM analysis showed core and shell sizes of 198/50nm and 176/30nm for P(St-BA-AA)1 and P(St- BA-AA)2 respectively. Whenever the prepared terpolymer microspheres are used within the heating and transition temperatures of 383 °C and 110 °C, their thermal stability is retained. The present manuscript has focused on the heavy metal; accumulation potential by common native plants i.e. Chenopodium album L., Ricinus communis, Ranunculus sceleratus, and Rumex dentatus growing on the disposed of pulp and paper mill effluent sludge. The sludge showed the abundance of benzene propanoic acid tert- butyldimethylsilyl ester, Octadecanoic acid, TMS, Hexadecanoic acid, TMS, cinnamic acid-α-phenyl-TMS ester, β-sitosterol TMS, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid as residual complex organic compounds along with heavy metals Fe (98.30 mg/L−1), Zn (51.00 mg/L−1), Cu (3.21 mg/L−1), Cd (9.11 mg/L−1), Mn (18.27 mg/L−1), Ni (5.21 mg/L−1), (Hg 0.014 mg/L−1) which were above the prescribed limit of environmental standard. The complexation of organic compounds with heavy metal restricts the bioavailability of metals to plants. But the metal analysis in various parts of the plant showed a significant amount of metal accumulation. Further, histological observations of root tissue through TEM showed apparent deposition of metal granules near the cell wall and vacuole as adoption features of plants. But the variable concentration of metal accumulation in different parts by various plants indicated the variable potential of tested plants with various metals. This also indicated their metal bio-availability and movement to plant tissue. Further, their bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) > 1.0 indicated the hyperaccumulation tendency of plants Mn was accumulated maximum in leaves C. album (69.38 mg/kg−1) followed by Cu (25.75 mg/kg −1), As (23.20 mg/kg −1), Fe (20.90 mg/kg −1) and Pb was maximum accumulated (22.41 mg/kg −1) in R. cummunis leaves. The result revealed that arsenic has been accumulated in higher amount root, shoot and leaves of all tested plants. The metal accumulator plants showed phytoremediation potential also by reducing various pollution parameters after growth on sludge. This study evaluates the effect of treated and untreated jute fiber/eggshell particulate reinforced cement-paper matrix composites for ceiling board application. Treated jute fiber (TJF) was obtained by immersing untreated jute fiber (UJF) into 1.25 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution in a shaker water bath maintained at 40 °C for 4 h. Eggshells (ESP) were pulverized and sieved to -75μm. Samples were prepared by varying the fiber volume fraction from 0.5 to 2.5 wt.% in the composites. While other constituents such as the binder (cement) and eggshell were kept constant. An hydraulic press cold compaction molder was utilized in the production of the hybrid composites in a predetermined mix ratio designed based on previous research. The samples produced were cured for 7 and 14 days, then sundried for 36 h. The physical, thermal, mechanical and wear behaviour of the produced composites were evaluated while the surface morphology of the fractured splitting tensile samples were analyzed. The result reveals that TJF/ESP hybrid composites had better performance than UJF/ESP hybrid composites in most of the tests carried out. Increase in the number of curing days was found to also enhance the properties of the composite produced in majority of the test evaluated. The 0.5 wt.% UJF/ESP gave the least performance of all the composites developed. While 2.5 wt. % TJF/ESP showed an optimum properties among the composites tested. Trifluralin is herbicide of the dinitroanilines group in which NO2 molecules are attached to the benzene ring at diverse positions. Trifluralin affects endocrine function and is listed as an endocrine disrupter in the European Union list. Therefore, its determination is so important in health science. In this study, an easy, sensitive and environmentally friendly method has been developed for determination of trifluralin based on its electrochemical oxidation on a three-electrode system designed on the surface of agricultural products using Ag-citrate/GQDs (graphene quantum dots) nano-ink. The sensor was prepared by direct writing on the surface of the samples. The designed electrodes were dried after 24 h at room temperature and used for trifluralin detection. Under optimized experimental conditions, the Ag-citrate/GQDs nano-ink based sensor was exhibited good sensitivity and specificity for trifluralin detection. The obtained linear range using the cyclic voltammetric (CV) technique is between 0.008 to 1 mM and low limit of quantification (LLOQ) was 0.008 mM. Also, the obtained linear range using differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) and square wave voltammetric (SWV) techniques is 0.005–0.04 mM with LLOQ of 0.005 mM. Paper/plastic sterilization pouches are commonly used packaging material for steam sterilization. Reuse of these pouches is a general practice in Thailand despite a single-use recommendation. This study aimed to determine microbial contamination after reusing paper/plastic sterilization pouches in a dental clinic and storage in a closed environment for 6 months. Three hundred and twenty pouches underwent 3 times of clinical use in terms of packaging, autoclave sterilization, handling, and unpacking. A mouth mirror was packed in each pouch to be used in a clinic. After each use, a pouch would be carefully inspected for reusability and undergone packaging, sterilization, handling again. In all steps, sterilization monitoring was rigorously applied. After 3 times of use, a piece of filter paper was placed inside each pouch (instead of a mouth mirror), the pouch was autoclaved and stored in a closed environment for 6 months. Then the filter paper was retrieved for microbial cultivation. A negative control group comprised new pouches containing filter paper without storage and a positive control group comprised pouches with impaired integrity. All samples in both the reuse and the negative control groups had no microbial contamination. All samples in the positive control group showed contamination. Prostate cancer is the most significant reason for deaths in men, outside of lung cancer. The clinical examination of cancer proteins or biomarkers is extremely significant in early examination and monitoring of recurrence of disease after treatment. Biomarkers have expanded great clinical significance owing to their extensive spectra in the identification, elimination, early diagnosis and cure of cancer. In this work, novel, ultrasensitive sandwich-type portable bio device based on citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (Citrate-AgNPs) modified graphene quantum dots (GQDs) nano ink for detection of Prostate specific antigen (PSA) was fabricated. Functionalized cysteamine with gold nanoparticles (Cys-AuNPs) was also utilized to amplify the signal. It provides a good and high external area for the immobilization biotinylated antibody of PSA in the large amount. For the first time, citrate-AgNPs-GQDs nano ink was directly written on the cellulose paper surface (ivory sheet and photographic paper) and modified by Cys-AuNPs. So, final structure of the immunodevices was completed after including of Ab1 and PSA (antigen). The immunosensors were used for the recognition of PSA by using DPVs (differential pulse voltammetry) technique. The obtained low limit of quantification (LLOQ) of the first immunodevice (ivory sheet/Citrate AgNPs-GQDs nano-ink/CysA-Au NPs/Ab1/BSA/PSA/Ab2) was 0.07 μg/L and the linear range for the calibration plot was from 0.07 to 60 μg/L. Also, the achieved LLOQ of the second immunodevice (photographic paper/Citrate AgNPs-GQDs nano-ink/Cys-Au NPs/Ab1/BSA/PSA/Ab2) was 0.05 μg/L with the linear range of 10 to 0.05 μg/L. It is noteworthy that, proposed immunoassay was effectively utilized to the monitoring of PSA glycoprotein in unprocessed human plasma sample. Paper production through chemical pulping has been identified as one of the ideal avenues of exploring the uses of groundnut shells as they are rich in cellulose. Ideally, the cellulose can be used to synthesize fibres that can be converted into useful paper products. In this study, chemical pulping was the chosen process for liberating the fibres as it is effective in dissolving lignin embedded within the cellulose. In addition, the fibres produced have superior physical properties compared to mechanical pulping. It is imperative that optimal conditions are identified for the chemical treatment process, in order to ensure that energy and chemical consumption are minimized. All these measures are aimed at reducing production costs and make chemical pulping economically viable, as compared to the mechanical pulping process which is less costly. Response surface methodology (RSM) was used in this study to evaluate the effect of three independent variables (cooking time, temperature, and sulphidity) on pulp yield and kappa number. These parameters are critical in the chemical pulping process and the optimal conditions obtained were 180 min, 100 °C and 23.6 wt.%, respectively. At the optimal cinditions, the pulp yield was 64.39wt% with a kappa number of 19.5. The results showed that all parameters investigated, had a statistically significant effect on the production of pulp. The increased cooking time was efficient in ensuring complete impregnation of the groundnut shells with chemicals for pulping and ensuring that the dissolution of lignin is not selective and does not result in dead spots inherently compromising the quality of the pulp. On the other hand, lower temperatures limited the peeling effect due to hydrolysis of carbohydrates which increased pulp yield due to a higher cellulose retention. The Application of a combination of enzymes is the best alternative to reduce the use of chemicals in the paper industry. Bacillus sp. NG-27 and Bacillus nealsonii PN-11 are known to produce thermoalkali stable xylanse (X) and mannanase (M) respectively having potential for pulp biobleaching. The Present study, reports the production of a mixture of X + M by co-culturing of strains in SSF and standardizing its application for pulp biobleaching. Production of enzymes by co-cultivation in SSF was optimized by statistical methods. Substantial increase in the yield of enzymes; 3.61 fold of xylanase and 37.71 fold of mannanase was achieved. Application of enzyme cocktail for pulp biobleaching resulted in a 45.64% reduction of kappa number with 55 IU g−1odp of enzyme dose (xylanase:mannanase; 3:1) at pH 8.0 in 1h at 65 °C along with significant increase in brightness (11%) and whiteness (75%). The Same quality of paper as made up from chemical treated pulp can be made from enzyme-treated pulp with 30% less use of chlorine. Structural analysis of enzyme-treated pulp showed dissolution of hemicellulose as indicated by pores, cracks and increased roughness all over the surface. Biodegradable modified natural polymers have great potential in curbing the threat of plastic pollution, but are still uncompetitive to petrochemical-based plastic. In this study, starch was hydrophobized by treating starch-dimethyl sulfoxide solutions with soybean oil at high temperature in the presence of sodium carbonate, then spray-coated on paper. The modified starch was evaluated by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis and contact angle value measurement of coated paper. FTIR analysis confirmed the substitution of hydroxyl groups with fatty acid ester and provided an estimate of the degree of substitution. The contact angle value of starch-coated paper surfaces was 121°, and was 111° after 10 min, demonstrating the high hydrophobicity and potential of the modified starch coating as a water-resistant treatment. The high hydrophobicity of the coated paper was due to formation of a textured surface with two levels of roughness, caused by the deposition of rough hydrophobic starch particles on paper fibers., Materials Science; Materials Chemistry; starch soybean oil catalyzed transesterification hydrophobic coating cellulose surfaces.

The best possible methods are needed to evaluate the scientific excellence of individuals and research groups in order to award positions and distribute research grants with higher efficiency. It is shown here that for the symmetrical distribution of citations of an individual the currently used h-index is approximately half of the square root of the total number of citations, according to the rule of Hirsch. It is also shown that deviations from this “ideal” h-index are common and they are due to deviations in the citation distributions of different individuals. However, those deviations are not characteristic for the scientific excellence of an individual and therefore they lead only to confusion in scientific evaluation. Therefore the h-index is suggested here to be replaced by the k-index. The k-index of an individual is calculated from his/her all independent citations as self-citations cannot be considered as an indication of the excellence of any paper or its authors (the citation is independent if there is no overlap in the lists of authors of the citing and the cited paper). The k-index takes into account only partial citations for each author of multi-authored papers. In ideal case the shares of the authors in a paper are published in the same paper similarly as shares of the inventors are published in patents. If not, the share of each co-author is taken equal to the inverse of the number of authors of the given paper. The k-index of an individual is defined as the square root from the sum of his/her independent partial citations. The value of the k-index is dependent on the databank used for the citations and on the time of the measurement. If scientists of similar age working in similar fields are compared using the same databank, their personal scientific excellence will be proportional to their k-index. When the k-index is divided by the number of active scientific years, a correction can be made for different ages of different applicants. In average, the k-index has similar values, but a wider range compared to the h-index. More importantly the k-index is not biased by this or that type of citation distribution of an individual, not biased by the self-citations and not biased by the results of the co-authors. For research domains such as life sciences, which pursue fundamental scientific understanding and applications intended for immediate use, academic entrepreneurship has played a pivotal role in commercialization. This paper presents an evaluation method of researchers related to user-inspired fundamental research, using global databases of startup finances and academic research papers of "startup readiness." Case studies of startups related to biopharmaceutical research topics suggest that the biopharmaceutical field has rich opportunities stemming from scientific research, commercialization, and entrepreneurship. This evaluation method sorts specific industry segments by which financing activities are active, and by which related growing research topics attract increased academic attention. We constructed networks of author citation and co-authorship from paper citation networks related to research topics in industry segments in the biopharmaceutical domain. Results obtained across all research topics we surveyed demonstrated that authors in the top 10% of degree centrality ranking in both networks are far more likely to be startup participants than other authors. Pallets are crucial in the logistics infrastructure system of various industries and manufacturing companies. They are made of wood and used to store various large and heavy goods. However, pulp and paper manufacturing companies undergo material shortages to make wooden pallets. Therefore, this study aimed to apply the 3-R concept (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) to deal with pallet shortages at the companies. After several experiments, the researcher developed three techniques based on the 3-R concept with the closed-loop system: (1) repairing and (2) reusing waste pallets from/to customers, (3) using Finger Glued-Laminate's products provided internally as raw materials for pallets; all three met several mandatory criteria of strength and design in a pallet. This research aimed to help companies make policies and strategies related to applying the 3-R concept to deal with pallet shortages. If the pallet quantity can meet the company's needs, it will improve the logistics process quality and deliver the products to consumers right on schedule., 3R, knowledge and technology, green approach, pallet shortage.

Iron ore froth flotation has recently been used to obtain pure minerals due to the depletion of high-grade deposits. Amine collectors have often been used in cationic reverse iron ore flotation to achieve the separation with quartz impurities. The main problem associated with these collectors is related to the control of frothing properties and the high cost of amine reagents. In this paper, we report the benefits of partial replacement of amine collectors with a frother in reverse cationic flotation of hematite. Surface tension and batch flotation experimental results indicated for the first time that replacing Flotigam EDA, an etheramine collector by more than 10% improved the flotation performance in both grade and recovery of hematite. It was also noted mild hematite entrainments for lower frother dosages whilst reagents cost estimation indicated profitability per ton of iron recovered. At higher frother dosage however, higher quartz recoveries were observed as a result of entrainment which led to satisfactory results in terms of iron grade in the sink, but results showed higher costs of reagents than when collector was used alone. From observed results, it was concluded that partially replacing amine collector by a frother does improve the performance of the flotation globally regardless of pronounced entrainment that was mainly due the mineralogy of the ore with notable amounts of locked particles in the lower sizes. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) and trace metal such as mercury emission during combustion of low-rank coal cause a significant impact on the environment and health. Flue gas at coal-fired power stations is one of the main sources for the emissions of SO2 and mercury metal. Low-cost and sustainable technologies for the removal of SO2 and mercury from flue gas have become increasingly important nowadays. This paper presents the study of simultaneous removal of SO2 and mercury over natural zeolite as an adsorbent in briquette and pulverized. The research is focused on evaluating adsorbent to coal optimum ratio towards adsorption performance on SO2 and mercury removal. The experiments on the removal of SO2 and mercury were carried out using horizontal electric furnace with different combustion temperature and adsorbent ratio. SO2 in the flue gas as the result of the combustion process which exits from the outlet was analyzed using Gas Combustion and Emission Analyzer (E4400, E-Instrument). Mercury metal residues in the bottom ash were analyzed using NIC Mercury SP Analyzer. An increasing zeolite adsorbent SO2 content in flue gas decreased. The optimum SO2 removal was determined on 4% zeolite adsorbent ratio. In Brazil, the leather industry is an important economic segment moving around U$ 3 billions of dollars a year. However, high amounts of water are requested to transform skin animals into leather, causing high wastewater amounts to be consequently produced. A major problem is attached to the presence of chromium in the wastewater from the tanning process. Chromium is a heavy metal potentially toxic both to the environment and to the human health. In order to control the levels of chrome dumped into the environment, Brazilian agencies require the treatment of effluents by the generating source. Thus, this study aimed to develop an alternative method to the removal of chromium in wastewater from the leather industry using the Opuntia ficus-indica biomass as eco-friendly biosorbent. Crude waste samples were collected in a tannery stabilization pond for chromium quantification and further treatments. The powdered Opuntia ficus-indica was obtained from species collected in Pernambuco, Brazil, and its physical parameters and pHPCZ were characterized. Adsorptions studies and acute toxicity were also carried out. The biomass remaining after the sorption was analyzed through scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The chromium content was above the limit allowed by the Brazilian regulatory agency. In sorption studies, biomass was able to remove 74.8% and 84.88% of Cr (III) using 2.0 g and 4.0 g of biomass, respectively. The surface of biomass is very favorable to biosorption and the chemical bindings among oxygen atoms present in the chemical components of this biomass and the heavy metal was confirmed through infrared spectrum. This study proved that Opuntia ficus-indica is effectively biosorbent to chromium, promising and with low costs for the leather industry, able to reduce its ecotoxicity as proven by chemical and biological assays., Palma forrageira, Sorption, Chromium, Tannery, Artemia salina, Ecotoxicity, Wastewater treatment.

The performance efficiency in constructed wetlands (CWs) technology is primarily affected by the media material and the types of plants used. Recently, investigations into the usage of local materials and plants in CWs has increased. Pumice is a material which is potential used as a media. However, research on amendment of pumice with other media in CWs is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the potential of pumice amended with sand media and planted with lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) in CWs to remove organic matter, suspended solids, nutrients, and coliform. The adsorbents were characterized using X-ray diffraction, FTIR and XRF followed by adsorption experiments for PO4–P. Furthermore, Six vertical flow (VF) mesocosms with a diameter of 10.2cm and 55cm depth were established over six months. The treatments were based on percentage of sand media amended with pumice and planted with lemongrass. Furthermore, the barren media were applied to investigate the effect of lemongrass. The loading rate of domestic wastewater into the VF mesocosms was 2 L/day while inflows and outflows were determined for nutrients, organic matter, suspended solids and coliform. The adsorption of PO4–P followed the Langmuir model with adsorption capacity was 0.089 and 0.067 mol/g for pumice and sand, respectively. The results also showed that the removal efficiency of TSS, COD, NO3–N, NO2–N, PO4–P and total coliforms were in the range of 93.7–97.3 %, 52–83 %, 63–86 %, 51–74%, 81–88 % and 92–97 %, respectively. Based on the results, the highest removal efficiency was observed in the sand media amended with 50 % pumice and planted with lemongrass, while the lowest was found in the barren sand media., Constructed wetlands, Pumice, Lemongrass, Nutrients, Organic matter, Total coliform.

The disposal of feacal matter from Urine Diversion Dry Toilets is a significant challenge due to limited land availability, possible underground water contamination, and the risk of spreading diseases. The collected faecal matter can be fed to Black Soldier Fly Larvae to produce protein-rich larvae used as animal feed. The disposal of the leftover waste (BSFL residue) is still a problem due to the risk of residual pathogen contamination. The BSFL residue contains residual plant nutrients and can be further processed into biochar. Faecal matter biochar offers an exciting value proposition where the pyrolysis process guarantees a 100% pathogen elimination. It also results in significant waste reduction in transport, storage weight, and volume. A preliminary study was conducted to (i) optimise pyrolysis conditions (optimal temperature treatment and residence time) for biochar production using residue obtained after faecal matter from urine diversion dry toilets was fed to black soldier fly larvae as feedstock; and (ii) determine the physicochemical and morphological characteristics of biochar produced. The residue was pyrolysed at 300, 400, and 500 °C and characterised for chemical, biological and physical characteristics. Surface area (6.61 m2 g−1), pore size, and C: N (9.28) ratio increased at 500 °C for 30 min. Exchangeable bases, (Calcium) Ca, (Magnesium) Mg, (Potassium) K, and (Sodium) Na increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The increase in basic cations resulted in an increase in pH from 6.7 in the residue to 9.8 in biochar pyrolysed at 500 °C. Biochar pyrolysed at 500 °C can therefore be used to improve acidic soils. Phosphorus increased with increasing pyrolysis temperature to 3 148 mg kg−1 at 500 °C. Biochar produced at 500 °C for 30 min had desirable characteristics: surface area, exchangeable bases, and pH. s This study investigates the interactive effects of processing parameters on the quality of milled rice using a one-step milling machine. Also, predictive models were generated using response surface methodology. The processing parameters were moisture content (10–14 % dry basis), shaft speed of rotation (600–900 rpm), and polishing time (1–3 min). The quality parameters evaluated were milling (head rice yield, percentage broken rice, fine broken rice, and milled rice yield), cooking (optimum cooking time, kernel elongation ratio, and width expansion ratio), and sensory (flavor, aroma, appearance, texture, and overall acceptability) properties. The results showed that the interactive effects of moisture content, shaft speed, and polishing time were significant (P < 0.05) on percentage broken rice, milled rice yield, fine broken rice, optimum cooking time, kernel elongation ratio, width expansion ratio, aroma, and appearance but was not significant on head rice yield, flavor, texture, and overall acceptability. These results were similar to the regression models generated. The application of sewage sludge in soils can bring benefits to agricultural productivity, however, the risks arising from this application must be measured and carefully evaluated. Persistent organics compounds and drugs can be present in the sewage sludge and if applied to the soil, they can cause severe risks to the soil biota and contamination of groundwater. This work determined 174 persistent organic compounds and drugs in sludge samples from a wastewater treatment plant using chromatographic methods. The drugs ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin and diclofenac were quantified, and values varied according to sampling period. For persistent organic compounds, cresols were the most abundant compounds in sewage sludge. With the analyses made of both the elutriate and the filtrate, it was possible to verify the potential for soil retention or leaching that each compound can present with the application of sewage sludge in the agriculture., Biosolid, Cresols, Chromatography.

Oil spillage contamination has been one of the most common and challenging problems in marine ecosystems over the years due to frequent petroleum exploitation, washing, and transportation activities. The use of nature-derived surfactants has become an attractive approach to restore the sites affected by oil spillage. Several studies have demonstrated that nutrient addition is an efficient strategy to enhance oil biodegradation since microorganisms can use petroleum hydrocarbons as their carbon and energy source, thus favoring and increasing the hydrocarbons degradation rate. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a commercial bio-catalytic agent used in the biological remediation of crude oil-contaminated sites through the qualitative analysis of its properties. The tests applied to this bio-catalyst showed excellent results. For instance, the emulsification (E24) and critical micellar concentration (CMC) assays displayed average values of 74.47% and 40 mg L−1, respectively. A significant reduction of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), turbidity, and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Content (TPHC) were observed in all the samples with bio-catalytic agent solution and aeration system. The best water quality was achieved by the sample with the highest concentration (10000 ppm) of bio-catalytic agent solution. Water scarcity is a known and major issue throughout the world. To tackle water scarcity, there is an urgent need for water re-use and recycling through wastewater treatment. This study is an attempt to re-used industrial effluent after treatment with gamma irradiation. The main drain of the industrial estate was sampled and analyzed for Physico-chemical parameters. For treatment, irradiation dose 13 Kilo Gray (kGy) cobalt (Co60) was applied. The treated water was re-analyzed for comparison with pre-analysis and compliance with the National environmental quality standard (NEQS). A decrease was observed in TSS, BOD5, and COD with 79%, 81%, and 85% respectively. The results achieved are within the permissible limits of NEQS. In Thailand, the palm oil industry produces a huge amount of palm oil mill effluent (POME), mostly used for electricity generation through biogas production. Co-digestion with other waste can further improve biogas yield and solve waste management problems. Most previous studies relied on biochemical methane potential (BMP) assay or batch co-digestion to obtain the optimal mixing ratio, ignoring the kinetic part or treat it for sole discussion of the results. This work directly uses mechanistic models based on Monod kinetics to describe the experimental results obtained from the co-digestion of POME (40 ml, BMP = 281.2 mlCH4/gCODadded)) with chicken manure (CM) (0–50 g) and crude glycerol (Gly) (0–10 ml). The best mixing ratio between CM and POME was 5 gCM: 40 mlPOME (BMP = 276.9 mlCH4/gCODadded). The best ratio for Gly and POME was 2 mlGly: 40 mlPOME (BMP = 211.9 mlCH4/gCODadded). Adding Gly only 2 mlGly/40 mlPOME doubled the amount of biogas. Hence, crude glycerol is a good substrate for on-demand biogas output. The co-digestion increases the methane output but with a decreased yield. A multi-substrate Monod model was developed based on the levels of digestion difficulty. A partial-least squared fitting was used to estimate its main parameters. All parameters included in the model passed the significant tests at a 95% confidence level. The model can describe the experimental results very well, predict observable state variables of batch co-digestion, and allow a simple extension for continuous co-digestion dynamics. A limited continuous experiment was conducted to confirm the applicability of the model parameters of POME digestion obtained from BMP tests to predict a continuous AD. The results show good potential but must be carefully interpreted. The current study was performed in order to evaluate the effect of using argane by-products (oil cake and pulp) as fattening diet of lambs. This was achieved through an experimental lamb fattening investigation using argan by-product as feeding source and the exploration of the fattened lamb performance, carcass characteristics and the chemical fatty acid composition of the quality produced meat. Twenty fattening Sardi lambs (26 ± 0.5 kg body weight and six months old) were divided into two (n = 10) homogenous experimental and control groups. Argane by-products (ABP) and traditional (CF) diets have been used for feeding the experimental and control groups respectively during a period of 75 days. The results obtained for both groups were used to determine the effect of feeding argane by-products on animal weight, average daily gain (ADG), carcass weight, muscle pH values, dressing %, dry matter, ash, ether extract, crude fiber, crude protein, and fatty acid composition. The obtained results showed that the experimental ABP group lambs had higher average daily gain and meat chemical, crude protein and ash and proportion of C18:0 than the control CF group lambs, while the control CF group had a higher feed conversion ratio, ether extract, mesenteric and perirenal fat. The results obtained for pH0 and pH24 were similar for both explored groups. The obtained results showed thus that the use of ABP as a diet to fattening lambs increased their performance and lean meat yield., argane by-products, fattening, performance, lambs, meat.

An up-flow anaerobic sludge bed (UASB) reactor was operated for five months to treat domestic wastewater contaminated by propylene glycol -main component of Type 2 aircraft deicing fluid (ADF)- at threshold ratio based on optimization study with batch reactors [i.e., operated at externally included ADF = 0.83–4.20%]. Biogas yields up to ~0.4 m3/kg CODinfluent was achieved, however drastically reduced along with total chemical oxygen demand (tCOD) removal at ADF>1.20% and indicated strong inhibition. Hence, the UASB reactor was fed at ADF = 1.05% [tCODinfluent = 8930 ± 2100 mg/L] and yielded >80% tCOD removal on average. Next generation sequencing (NGS) findings also revealed that Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes had the highest ratios of relative abundances in biomass sample taken at the last operating day; hence co-existence of these phyla played significant role in glycol removal with Synergistetes and Thermotogae bacteria whereas Methanobacterium and Methanoculleus archaea increased remarkably., Aircraft deicing fluid; Biogas; Glycol; Predominant species; Toxicity; UASB reactor.

The present study evaluated the effect of supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) assisted by cold pressing (SFEAP) on the overall yield, extraction kinetics, composition of baru seed oil and manufacturing cost (COM). The best extraction conditions were determined in extraction assays combining different pressures (150–350 bar) and temperatures (35 and 45 °C). The extraction yield by SFEAP (28.6 g oil/100 g baru seed) was approximately 31% higher than that obtained by SFE (21.9 g oil/100 g baru seed), according to the kinetic study with the best extraction conditions (350 bar and 45 °C). The extraction yield observed under this condition allowed us to obtain a lower COM for both techniques (SFE was US$ 118.32/kg baru oil and SFEAP was US$ 87.03/kg baru oil) compared to lower pressures and temperatures. The oil obtained under all extraction conditions was rich in unsaturated fatty acids and other bioactive compounds. The objective of this study was to investigate the performance of different weight of Salvinia molesta plants in biological treatment of domestic wastewater. Three treatment systems containing 280g (GS1), 140g (GS2) and 70g (GS3) of S. molesta plants were used for the phytoremediation process. Physicochemical analysis such as pH, colour, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and biological oxygen demand (BOD5) of the influent and effluent water samples were performed according to spectrophotometric methods. The outcome of the study demonstrated that the different weight of S. molesta plants played a significant role in improving the quality of the wastewater samples, in which GS1 removed 96.8% (colour), 91% (BOD5), and 82.6% (COD). While up to 88.6% (colour), 87.1% (BOD5), and 81.1% (COD) reduction was observed for GS2 treatment systems, and GS3 was efficient in removing 85.5% (colour), 86.1% (BOD5), and 68.3% (COD). Also, a pH value of 6.29–7.19, 5.97–7.07, and 6.17–7.42 was obtained from GS1, GS2 and GS3 treatment systems, respectively. Thus, the treatment system with the highest quantity of S. molesta (GS1) demonstrated better performance compared to the other two systems (GS2 and GS3). The findings of this research can be applied in addressing the goals of sustainable development through the use of green technology to reduce the threat of water pollution in natural water bodies. In the present work, a strain of the basidiomycete fungus Trametes polyzona was used to decolorize the Amaranth dye. The decolorization was carried out in an Airlift reactor with three flow regimes: 1, 2, and 3 vvm. The results showed that the decolorization was a function of the flow regime. The decolorization times for the regimes of 1, 2, and 3 vvm were 30, 25, and 19 days, respectively. The COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) decreased from 1600 to 72 mg COD/L. The enzymatic activity kinetics of laccase (Lcc), lignin peroxidase (LiP), and manganese peroxidase (MnP) were determined. In all the treatments, the enzyme LiP was expressed during the first 6 days, at which point 80% decolorization was observed, whereas Lcc and MnP enzymes were produced from day 6 until the end of the decolorization process. The effluent generated showed no inhibitory effects on the growth of the algae Nannochloropsis salina. T. polyzona showed great versatility in the decolorization of synthetic effluents containing the Amaranth dye, and the fungus was able to use this dye as its only carbon source starting at the beginning of the process. This work focusses on a novel technique of producing bioethanol from fermented pomegranate fruits waste by using Saccharomyces cerevisiae, commonly known as baker's yeast. Four different blends of bioethanol, namely PE10, PE15, PE20, and PE25 were experimented at various operating speeds. It was inferred that the addition of ethanol enhanced the consumption of fuel as well as braking capacity. However, thermal performance was observed to be declined. PE15 blend exhibited optimum brake thermal efficiency at full load condition when compared with unleaded fuel. Brake specific fuel consumption of PE15 was noticed to be lower at different operating speeds among all the blends. Oxides of nitrogen as well as carbon dioxide emissions were increased as the proportion of ethanol in pure fuel was increased. Hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions were reduced, while increasing the ratio of ethanol relative to pure gasoline, except PE10 blend. The combustion characteristics were also studied. Lower value of coefficient of variation revealed stable combustion. In Ghana, the potential of palm kernel shells as renewable energy in charcoal production has not been exploited adequately. Using a low-cost instrument (kiln and compressor box) built from local resources, we produced charcoal briquette from palm kernel (Elaeis guineensis) shells. Further, we measured and compared its efficiency using starch as a binder to traditional charcoal and commonly used fuelwood (Acacia) in Cape Coast. Following the American Standards for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the proximate analysis was conducted for all fuels with results indicating that palm kernel shell (PKS) briquette produced had a moisture content of 1.08 %, as compared to 9.25 % in charcoal and 16.00 % in fuelwood. The volatile matter, ash content and fixed carbon recorded were 71.80 %, 0.06 %, and 27.07 % in PKS briquette, 86.00 %, 0.78 %, and 3.97 % in charcoal and 80.50 %, 2.04 %, 1.46 % in fuelwood respectively. The calorific values for charred PKS increased after binding to form the PKS briquette with the highest value among the other fuels. The calorific value for the other fuels were 17.5 MJ/kg for charcoal, 18.72 MJ/kg for charred PKS, and 18.72 MJ/kg for PKS briquette. We also conducted an ignition test, combustion test, fuel burning rate (FBR), and specific fuel consumption (SFC) on PKS briquette and charcoal to determine their suitability as cooking fuels. Charcoal readily ignited as compared to PKS briquette with respective fuel mass of 5.08 g and 25.5 g. The resultant briquette possesses desirable combustion characteristics such as no smoke emissions and ash formation. The FBR and SFC in PKS briquette recorded the highest in comparison with charcoal. The values recorded were 2.84 g/min and 20.05 g/ml respectively while that of charcoal was 0.42 g/min and 3.48 g/ml respectively. PKS briquette produced from this study showed high calorific value, low moisture content, and a fast burning rate amongst other excellent properties. These properties are potential indicators that the proper utilization and production of PKS briquette as renewable energy in Ghana would contribute to solving the existing energy crisis. Lime is one of the most commonly consumed medicinal plants in Indonesia, which must be dried to preserve its quality, but mostly by using traditional, ineffective drying method. Therefore, this study aims to investigate lime drying process a hybrid solar drying method. The hybrid solar dryer consisted of a solar dryer and Liquefied Petroleum Gas as the supplementary heater. The drying process was conducted until there was no significant weight decrease, with the drying temperature of 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 °C. Thin-layer modeling and quality analysis were also conducted. The experimental results indicated that 5 h was required to sufficiently dry the lime at 80 °C, while drying at 40 °C took 24 h to finish. The drying rate curve of lime suggested that lime drying mostly happened during the falling-rate period. Moreover, the average efficiency of the hybrid solar dryer ranged from 5.36% to 38.61%, which increased with temperature. From the 10 thin-layer drying models used, the Wang and Singh model was the most suitable to describe the drying behavior of lime. The effective diffusivity values of the limes and the activation energy value during hybrid solar drying were within their respective acceptable range for agricultural products. However, as the drying temperature was increased from 40 to 80 °C, the total phenolic content and vitamin C content decreased, from 87.3 to 27.8 mg GAE/100 g dry limes and 0.118 to 0.015 ppm, respectively. It can be concluded that hybrid solar dryer is able to sufficiently dry the lime, with acceptable drying time and dryer efficiency, although using high drying temperature will decrease the quality of dried lime. Abattoir wastewater generated from various meat processing operations in several developing countries pose a serious threat to the environment. Consequently, there is urgent need to reduce the impact of environmental pollution from it. Coagulation techniques have been recommended and used by many researchers successfully in treating wastewater, therefore an investigation of possible use of chito-protein extracted from crab shell (locally sourced) was used as a coagulant for treating abattoir wastewater. Coagulation experiments were carried out using jar-test procedure to investigate the influence of pH, time of settling, temperature and adsorbent dosage for coagulation of BOD, COD, Turbidity and Colour from the wastewater sample. To determine the interaction effect of the various process variables, Response Surface Method (RSM) was used in the optimization of the process variables. To determine the effectiveness of the coagulant, pre and post characterization of the wastewater samples were undertaken, the result of the post characterization of the wastewater sample indicated that most of the water quality parameters except Iron were within WHO standard. The Total Suspended Solid (TSS), for instance stood at 564.6 mg/L and 29 mg/L respectively for pre and post characterisation, the value of 29 mg/L of the post characterization was below the WHO recommended value of 30 mg/L. The predicted responses and the experimental values correlated significantly, an indicator that RSM optimization method used in this study is suitable in modelling the process variables. The result of the study further shows that optimum process variable is dependent on the solution pH (acidic), coagulant dosage of 2–3g, settling time of 25–30 min and operating temperature from 323K to 333K. This paper presents the findings of an experimental investigation on optimizing pozzolanic activity of a blend of Rice Husks (RH), Spent Bleaching Earth (SBE) and Broken Bricks (BB) to form pozzolana that would have pozzolanic activity comparable to natural pozzolanas. Four ratios of RH, BB, and SBE were burnt in the Fixed Bed Kiln (FBK). The starting ratio had 20 kg of RH, 0 kg of BB and 4 kg of SBE. The amount of BB was increased by 2 kg each to a maximum of 6 kg as the mass of SBE was kept constant. The resultant ashes were subjected to various pozzolanic tests. This included; saturated lime test and compressive strength analysis. It was observed that the calcined blend with 10: 1: 2 mix of RH: BB: SBE exhibited the highest pozzolanic activity. This sample was mixed with acetylene lime sludge (ALS) in the ratio of 2:1 pozzolana: ALS. The compressive strengths for these cements were tested at 2 and 28 days of curing. The compressive strengths of this cement met the required EN standards for Portland pozzolana cement.

There is a growing need for the production and use of sustainable biofuels worldwide. One noteworthy approach is the production of biofuels via the thermochemical conversion of lignocellulose biomass. This work studied the production of char via the slow pyrolysis of corn-stover as a suitable supplement or replacement of coal in industrial processes. The char quality was assessed according to the ASTM D388 (American Standard Testing Method), which ranks coals according to their higher heating value (HHV), volatile matter and fixed carbon. Furthermore, an evaluation of the techno-economic feasibility of an industrial scale 30 t/day slow pyrolysis plant was conducted. The techno-economic study was conducted at a char baseline price of $100/ton. A two-level three-factor central composite design (CCD), with response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the slow-pyrolysis process conditions. Optimisation experiments were conducted at bench-scale gram-level to study the influences of the process condition of char higher heating value (HHV) and yield. Furthermore, this study assessed the techno-economic feasibility of a 30t/day processing plant. The results showed process temperature had the most significant influence on char HHV and yield. Optimal conditions for char production were at a reactor temperature of 453 °C, and 5 °C/min and 29 min for heating rate and holding time respectively. Under these conditions char with HHV of 26.25 ± 1.5 MJ/kg and yield of 34.5% were produced. These chars are comparable to sub-bituminous A coals. A high energy efficiency of ~82% was also associated with the process. The economic feasibility of the plant is highly sensitive to the cost of CS feedstock. The process had a net present value (NPV) of -$1.17 million at the $20/ton CS baseline assumption. A cost sensitivity analysis showed that when the cost of CS was lowered to $3/ton, the NPV was zero. As per the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Hunger Index, the incidence of malnutrition and Vitamin-A deficiency in preschool-age children is higher in South-East Asian countries. Therefore, this study was envisaged to formulate value-added flavoured buffalo milk and to carry out the sensory evaluation, nutritional analysis, storage characteristics and total carotene content of the developed product. Flavoured buffalo milk was prepared by incorporation of Cucurbita pepo (Pumpkin) pulp and ground sugar at a concentration of 15% and 10%, respectively. The formulation was found preeminent by panellists and then subjected to nutritional analysis and storage studies at room temperature following “in bottle heat treatment”. Nutritional analysis revealed that the protein, fat, total carbohydrates, total ash and moisture content of pumpkin flavoured buffalo milk were 3.07%, 5.21%, 12.63%, 0.61% and 78.48%, respectively. The storage study of flavoured buffalo milk showed a significantly (p < 0.05) declined score in colour and appearance as well as flavour only after day 90. The overall acceptability score also declined significantly (p < 0.05) after day 60 of storage. Though the sensory score declined gradually during the storage period, the product was liked by the panellist even till day 180. The carotene content of pumpkin flavoured buffalo milk was 1.2 mg/100 g at day 0 and it decreased significantly as storage prolongs. The nutritional components were not affected significantly during the 180 days storage period. The use of non-oil Jatropha biomass in the energy mix as a solid fuel offers the most effective ways of utilising such resource. However, available information indicates that biomass has negative inherent properties which lower its fuel value. This negative effect can be improved by slow pyrolysis process called torrefaction where the biomass is heated in the range of 200 °C to 300 °C. In the present investigation the effects of torrefaction temperature on the solid fuel value of different Jatropha biomass materials were determined. Consequently, three types of Jatropha biomass namely; seed cake, stem and fruit cover were considered under five temperature levels (200 °C, 225 °C, 250 °C, 275 °C, 300 °C). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed that there were significant differences (P > 0.05) in bulk density, hygroscopicity, energy content and ultimate etc. The statistical analysis results indicated that there was biomass type and torrefaction temperature interaction effects on the ultimate analysis, bulk density, hygroscopicity, energy content and energy yield. The interaction effects of the factors under investigation were not observed in mass yield. Increase in torrefaction temperature generally reduced the equilibrium moisture content and volatile matters across the biomass types. However fixed carbon, carbon content, ash content and energy density were increased across the biomass types as the temperature was increased from 200 °C to 300 °C. The present study included lab-scale sewage sludge (SS) composting amended by molasses and spent mushroom substrate (SMS) in 5 L composting reactor system. The influence of molasses and SMS amendment on nitrogen loss and humification of SS composting was evaluated. The results showed that SMS amendment, especially combination with molasses raised composting temperature, increased CO2 volatilization, promoted organic matter degradation, improve germination index and humification process. The addition of SMS and molasses contain carbohydrates used as carbon source and energy substance by microorganisms could increase microbial activity and ammonia assimilation. In the SMS + molasses treatments, NH3 volatilization was reduced by 33.1%–37.3% and N2O volatilization was only 17.8%–25.4% of that in the control treatment, furthermore, the nitrogen loss rate was reduced by 27.2%–32.2%. The amount of palm oil mill residues increases rapidly and will become a severe problem in the future. One potential technique for alleviating this concerning environmental problem is to convert these residues into biochar by the pyrolysis process. Pyrolysis of three types of palm oil mill residues (namely, palm kernel shells, empty palm fruit bunches, and oil palm fibers) was conducted in a fixed bed reactor at 500 °C and 2 L/min of nitrogen flow rate for 60 min. The optimization of biochar production was performed using the Box-Behnken design and analyzed using response surface methodology. The effects of three potential factors, including pyrolysis temperatures, nitrogen flow rates, and biomass particle sizes, were studied. The results showed that the highest biochar yield (44.91 wt%) was obtained from pyrolysis of palm kernel shells at 525 °C with a nitrogen flow rate of 2 L/min and a particle size of 750 μm. Application of biochar produced from palm kernel shells for carbon dioxide capture was tested in a packed bed adsorber of 3.0 g of biochar sample by flowing 1,400 ppm of carbon dioxide in the gas feed mixture at 2.5 L/min. In the exploration for hydrocarbons, a successful drilling operation to the desired depth hinges on the effective performance of the formulated drilling fluid. Apart from carrying drill cuttings to the surface, another major function of the fluid is to seal off the walls of the wellbore to prevent fluids from coming into and out of the wellbore while drilling a well. Numerous commercial fluid loss additives: carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyanionic cellulose (PAC), among others have been in existence with their drawbacks and effect on the total drilling cost. This study evaluates the use of locally sourced materials: Detarium microcarpum, Brachystegia eurycoma and rice husk, as fluid loss control additive in the water-based drilling fluid. The materials were prepared, ground and sieved to 125 microns. Four sets of water-based drilling muds were formulated using the local materials and CMC as fluid loss control additives. The mud formulation was based on the American Petroleum Institute (API) standard of 25g bentonite to 350mL of water. Also, the filtration test of the formulated muds was performed using API recommended practice for static filtration test at low temperature - low pressure (LTLP) condition. The results obtained showed that Detarium microcarpum and rice husk fluid loss volume and filter cake thickness were comparable with that of CMC from additive content of 10g, while Brachystegia eurycoma was comparable from additive content of 15g. Furthermore, the composite additive results indicated that Detarium microcarpum-rice husk at 95% Detarium microcarpum-5% rice husk performed better than Brachystegia eurycoma-rice husk of the same combination. Additionally, the fluid loss volume and filter cake thickness of Detarium microcarpum-rice husk additive were comparable with CMC from 10g content. Also, the results revealed that the fluid loss volume and filter cake thickness obtained from the locally sourced materials were within API specification for fluid loss control agents. The continuous accumulation of artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) tailings in the Philippines without adequate storage and disposal facility could lead to human health and environmental disasters in the long run. In this study, ASGM tailings was simultaneously stabilized and repurposed as construction material via geopolymerization using coal fly ash, palm oil fuel ash and a powder-based alkali activator. Scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) identified iron sulfides in the tailings containing arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn), which could be released via weathering. The average unconfined compressive strengths (UCS) of tailings-based geopolymers at 14 days curing were 7.58 MPa and 7.7 MPa with fly ash and palm oil fuel ash, respectively. The tailings-based geopolymers with palm oil fuel ash had higher UCS most likely due to CASH reaction product formation that improved strength formation. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) results showed very low leachabilities of As, Pb and Fe in the geopolymer materials suggesting ASGM tailings was effectively encapsulated within the geopolymer matrix. Microbial production of acetoin is eco-friendly and inexpensive when compared with its synthetic methods of production. In the present findings, bioproduction of acetoin in a typical bioreactor was discussed with a view to ascertain the seemingly comparative advantage of bioreactor system over shake flask, and more importantly, to confirm that corn steep liquor can indeed adequately be used as a replacement for other organic nitrogen sources. Taguchi design was statistically used to optimized the fermentation process which resulted in a 3-fold increase in molar yield (83%) corresponding to a six-fold increase in acetoin concentration (63.43 g/L), as compared to a similar study conducted in a shake flask. Although agitation rate was observed to be the most controlling, the bioreactor may underperform at agitation rate greater than 300 rpm. The optimum parameters for acetoin production in this study were 300 rpm agitation, 1.5 slpm aeration, 2 days fermentation time, and pH 6.5. The previous research showed that slow sand filtration (SSF) can remove the total coli by approximately 99% because of the schmutzecke layer in the filter. The presented study aimed to complete the previous research on SSF, especially on the schmuztdecke layer mechanism, to remove total coli. Total coli is a parameter of water quality standard in Indonesia, and the behavior of schmutzdecke affects the total coli removal. In the present study, the raw water from Amprong River was treated using horizontal roughing filter (HRF) and SSF. The variations in SSF rate used were 0.2 and 0.4 m/h. Total coliforms were analyzed using the most probable number test, and schmutzdecke visualization was conducted through scanning electron microscopy–energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX). The best coliform concentration in water treated by the combination of HRF and SSF was 4,386 colonies per 100 mL of sample using the filtration rate of 0.2 m/h, and its removal efficiency was 99.60%. However, the quality of water treated by the combination of HRF and SSF did not meet the drinking water quality standard because the removal of total coli must be 100%. The SEM–EDX visualization results in schmutzdecke showed that the average bacteria in the schmutzdecke layer were small, white, opaque, and circular, with entire edge and flat elevation. Microbubble technology dramatically raises the efficiency of the flotation and aeration processes of water treatment plants (WTPs), which see extensive use in developed countries. A local institution, Indonesia Water Institute, has tried to investigate microbubble technology intended for lab-scale WTP. However, the current reactor system does not yet meet the microbubble criteria, especially as it has had few investigations of its abilities in flotation and aeration. This study aims to analyze the effect of size variations that affect the rising velocity and mass transfer coefficient (kLa) of aeration contact time. Three local spargers were used to produce microbubbles. Bubble diameters were measured optically and analyzed using ImageJ software. The dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration was measured every minute using an automated sensor so that the kLa could be determined. Of the three spargers, the smallest bubble size was produced by the vortex type with an average bubble diameter of 89 μm and the slowest rising velocity of 17.67 m/h. It also yielded the highest kLa of 0.297/min, which gave an aeration contact time of 3.64 minutes. The experimental uses of three local spargers revealed that the smaller the microbubble diameter, the higher the mass transfer coefficient in flotation and aeration processes. The hybrid treatment techniques have been proven that could be a proper solution to the metalworking fluid (MWF) wastewaters disposal challenge. Hence, this investigation was conducted aim to the assessment of chemical addition-dissolved air floatation (CA-DAF) unit followed with a heterogeneous photocatalytic (PC) process as UV/H2O2/ZnO to treat MWF wastewater produced in one of the central industrial estates in the Middle East. The CA-DAF unit was implemented as trial and errors and had an appropriate efficiency. However, the environmental discharge standards were not achieved only by this unit, so that, a PC process considered for this purpose in a pilot-scale reactor. And also, Chemical oxygen demand (COD), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) were considered as physicochemical parameters to analyze the applied photochemical reaction throughout the concentrations of ZnO and H2O2, and pH value as variables of the study. The ideal and optimized conditions were observed at pH 10, 600 mg l−1 of ZnO, and 13.11 g l−1 of H2O2 via 99.87% and 97.9% reduction rates in total COD and TPH, respectively. These removal rates were obtained for this integrated strategy under the optimized reaction. By evaluating the synergistic effect, it was found that UV/ZnO could be a predominant reaction in this process. The organic and intermediates analysis appeared 78.46% reduction for all detected organic matters. Besides, PC generation of bis phthalate, mono phthalate, benzene, and benzoic acid to 2,6-bis (1,1-dimethylethyl)-4-mthyl phenol was the reason of the residual phenolic compound concentration in the reaction solution with low removal rate. The kinetic study showed that this reaction could be well fitted with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model by R2 equal with 0.973 and 0.988 in turn for COD and TPH. The expenditures to treat 1 m3 of the CA-DAF was estimated at 5.335 us$ via cost analysis. Finally, the collected findings indicate that CA-DAF integrated with UV/H2O2/ZnO can be an efficient approach in the MWF wastes disposal or treatment for reuse.

Heterogeneous photocatalysis is a promising technology to treat many industrial wastewaters. To date, this potential has not been proven with wastewaters from agricultural origins, such as swine wastewater. In this work, the photocatalytic degradation of swine wastewater was studied by applying a response surface methodology based on the Box-Behnken design. The interactive effects of the variation of factors such as photocatalyst dosage (X1), wastewater concentration (X2), and irradiation time (X3) were analyzed to identify the optimal operating conditions for COD reduction. A second-order polynomial accurately represented organics degradation with a high adjusted R-squared (0.9666). The main effects of factor X2 and the quadratic effects of factors X2 and X3 were the most significant for COD reduction. The optimal conditions for COD degradation were 1.16 g L−1 for photocatalyst dosage, 1.68% for wastewater concentration, and irradiation time of 9.2 h. These results have been validated in a confirmation experiment and COD removal reached 91.7% (98.1 % predicted). Based on the Langmuir—Hinshelwood model, the reaction rate constant was 3.9×10−3 min−1. Besides, FTIR analysis indicated that Aeroxide® TiO2 reusability may be possible, especially for low wastewater concentrations. Heterogeneous photocatalysis can be applied as a technology for the integrated treatment of industrial wastewaters resulting from swine production.

Tetrapleura tetraptera, claim to be beneficial for curing of human ailments. In this study, we determined phytochemicals, antioxidant and metal chelating capacity in the pulp, seeds and whole fruit (mixture of pulp and seeds) of T. tetraptera. Phytochemicals (flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, steroids, saponins and phenols) were examined in aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the pulp, seeds and whole fruit. The recovery of all compounds was satisfactory, in the range of 90%–108%. The screening test revealed the presence of many phytochemicals in either one or both extracts. After the qualitative analysis, UV-Spectrophotometer was used to quantify phenols, flavonoids, saponins and alkaloids where higher phytochemical concentrations were recorded in the pulp followed by whole fruit and then the seeds. The metal chelating capacity was determined using EDTA standard, and was in the order of pulp>whole fruit>seeds. Also, the pulp was established to exhibit much antioxidant activity as compared to the whole fruit or seeds. This study therefore supports the use of T. tetraptera in traditional systems of medicine owing to its active chemical compounds, and has given many vital insights on which part of T. tetraptera fruit to consume as concentrations of these compounds varies in the pulp, seeds and whole fruit., Food science, Pharmaceutical chemistry, Tetrapleura tetraptera; Phytochemicals; Antioxidant; Metal chelating capacity

The reuse of solidified/stabilized low-temperature thermally desorbed (pre-treated) oil-based drill cuttings for construction purposes is becoming increasingly attractive in recent times; though, without screening a priori the levels of target residual organic contaminants against environmental guidelines to ensure compliance. In this study, pre-treated oil-based drill cuttings were collected from a waste treatment facility in the Niger Delta Province (5.317oN; 6.467oE), Nigeria and subjected to cement-based solidification/stabilization (S/S) followed by chemical leaching and screening of the data against local environmental guidelines. S/S was done with drill cuttings contents of 0 (control), 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 % as part replacement for fine aggregate at 0.6:1, 0.65:1, 0.7:1, 0.75:1, and 0.8:1 water-to-cement ratios using 1:2:4 mix design for a grade-20 concrete. Afterwards, the surface microstructure, elemental composition, and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of the solidified/stabilized matrix were determined. Amounts of heavy metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) leached were also assessed. Results showed that the 2 % drill cuttings addition yielded the highest UCS (22.22–26.22 N/mm2) at water-to-cement ratio of 0.6:1, which were well above the recommended minimum UCS of 20 N/mm2 for a grade-20 concrete. The average amount of residual TPH in the solidified/stabilized matrix (62.41 mg/kg) was slightly higher than the local regulatory target value of 50 mg/kg; suggesting that the cement-based S/S failed to immobilize completely all the hydrocarbons in the pre-treated oil-based drill cuttings.
