In this paper, we present a practical method to construct dirty paper coding (DPC) schemes using sum codes. Unlike the commonly used approach to DPC where the coding scheme involves concatenation of a channel code and a quantization code, the proposed method embodies a unified approach that emulates the binning method used in the proof of the DPC result. Auxiliary bits are used to create the desired number of code vectors in each bin. Sum codes are obtained when information sequences augmented with auxiliary bits are encoded using linear block codes. Sum-code-based DPC schemes can be implemented using any linear block code, and entail a relatively small increase in decoder complexity when compared to standard communication schemes. A memoryless bivariate Gaussian source is transmitted to a pair of receivers over an average-power limited bandwidth-matched Gaussian broadcast channel. Based on their observations, Receiver 1 reconstructs the first source component while Receiver 2 reconstructs the second source component both seeking to minimize the expected squared-error distortions. In addition to the source transmission digital information at a specified rate should be conveyed reliably to Receiver 1–the “stronger” receiver. Given the message rate we characterize the achievable distortions region. Specifically, there is an ${\sf SNR}$ -threshold below which Dirty Paper coding of the digital information against a linear combination of the source components is optimal. The threshold is a function of the digital information rate, the source correlation and the distortion at the “stronger” receiver. Variable-length (VL) coding with feedback is a commonly used technique that can approach point-to-point Shannon channel capacity with a significantly shorter average codeword length than fixed-length coding without feedback. This paper uses the inter-frame coding of Zeineddine and Mansour, originally introduced to address varying channel-state conditions in broadcast wireless communication, to approach capacity on point-to-point channels using VL codes without feedback. The per-symbol complexity is comparable to decoding the VL code with feedback (plus the additional complexity of a small peeling decoder amortized over many VL codes) and presents the opportunity for encoders and decoders that utilize massive parallel processing, where each VL decoder can process simultaneously. This paper provides an analytical framework and a design process for the degree distribution of the inter-frame code that allows the feedback-free system to achieve 96% or more of the throughput of the original VL code with feedback. As examples of VL codes, we consider non-binary (NB) low-density parity-check (LDPC), binary LDPC, and convolutional VL codes. The NB-LDPC VL code with an 8-bit CRC and an average codeword length of 336 bits achieves 85% of capacity with four rounds of ACK/NACK feedback. This paper considers a device-to-device (D2D) fog-radio access network wherein a set of users are required to store/receive a set of files. The D2D devices are connected to a subset of the cloud data centers and thus possess a subset of the data. This paper is interested in reducing the total time of communication, i.e., the completion time, required to disseminate all files among all devices using instantly decodable network coding (IDNC). Unlike previous studies that assume a fully connected communication network, this paper tackles the more realistic scenario of a partially connected network in which devices are not all in the transmission range of one another. The joint optimization of selecting the transmitting device(s) and the file combination(s) is first formulated, and its intractability is exhibited. The completion time is approximated using the celebrated decoding delay approach by deriving the relationship between the quantities in a partially connected network. The paper introduces the cooperation graph and demonstrates that the problem is equivalent to a maximum weight clique problem over the newly designed graph. A novel approach is here presented to superimpose a low-priority data stream on a high-priority data stream for OFDM systems. The main improvement with respect to conventional hierarchical modulation, which is included with the same purpose in various wireless technologies, is that the low-priority data stream can be decoded from the received subcarrier symbols without any previous equalization for multipath fading channels. As a consequence, the expected performance is nearly invariant of the channel estimation method used to equalize the channel. The low-priority stream is inserted adopting a gain-invariant dirty paper coding based on Rational Dither Modulation, which was proposed for data hiding applications. In this paper an analysis of the developed system is presented and several simulations have been carried out using DVB-T system parameters to verify the validity of the proposed approach. The experimental results show the better performance of the proposed method with respect to that of a conventional hierarchical modulation, particularly when the accuracy of the estimated channel response decreases. We consider practical schemes for binary dirty-paper channels and broadcast channels (BCs) with two receivers and varying channel quality. With the BC application in mind, this paper proposes a new design for binary dirty paper coding (DPC). By exploiting the concept of coset binning, the complexity of the system is greatly reduced when compared to the existing works. Some design challenges of the coset binning approach are identified and addressed. The proposed binary DPC system achieves similar performance to the state-of-the-art, superposition-coding-based system while demonstrating significant advantages in terms of complexity and flexibility of system design. For binary BCs, achieving the capacity generally requires the superposition of a normal channel code and a carefully designed channel code with non-uniform bit distribution. The non-uniform bit distribution is chosen according to the channel conditions. Therefore, to achieve the capacity for binary BCs with varying channel quality, it is necessary to use quantization codes of different rates, which significantly increases the implementation complexity. In this paper, we also propose a broadcast scheme that generalizes the concept of binary DPC, which we term soft DPC. By combining soft DPC with time sharing, we achieve a large percentage of the capacity for a wide range of channel quality with little complexity overhead. Our scheme uses only one fixed pair of codes for users 1 and 2, and a single quantization code, which possesses many practical advantages over traditional time sharing and superposition coding solutions and provides strictly better performance. This paper investigates how much the rate region of the two-user Gaussian interference channel can be enlarged by allowing the two source nodes to cooperate. Two cooperative transmission schemes are proposed, based on dirty-paper coding and the assumption that the radio bandwidth is partitioned into two parts, and each part is utilized by one source node. The achievable rate regions and the outage performance of these two schemes are compared with the simplified Han-Kobayashi scheme, which is an efficient coding scheme for the interference channel. Simulation results show that in some channel realizations, the rate region of the Han-Kobayashi scheme is a subset of the rate regions of our two proposed cooperative transmission schemes. Furthermore, a significant gain in outage performance can be obtained, as the cooperative schemes have twice the diversity order of the simplified Han-Kobayashi scheme. While both cooperative schemes are able to yield large diversity gain, one of them can be implemented by simple decoder. This paper uses the reconstruction-computation-quantization (RCQ)paradigm to decode low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. RCQ facilitates dynamic non-uniform quantization to achieve good frame error rate (FER) performance with very low message precision. For message-passing according to a flooding schedule, the RCQ parameters are designed by discrete density evolution. Simulation results on an IEEE 802.11 LDPC code show that for 4-bit messages, a flooding Min Sum RCQ decoder outperforms table-lookup approaches such as information bottleneck (IB) or Min-IB decoding, with significantly fewer parameters to be stored. Additionally, this paper introduces layer-specific RCQ, an extension of RCQ decoding for layered architectures. Layer-specific RCQ uses layer-specific message representations to achieve the best possible FER performance. For layer-specific RCQ, this paper proposes using layered discrete density evolution featuring hierarchical dynamic quantization (HDQ) to design parameters efficiently. Finally, this paper studies field-programmable gate array (FPGA) implementations of RCQ decoders. Simulation results for a (9472, 8192) quasi-cyclic (QC) LDPC code show that a layered Min Sum RCQ decoder with 3-bit messages achieves more than a 10% reduction in LUTs and routed nets and more than a 6% decrease in register usage while maintaining comparable decoding performance, compared to a 5-bit offset Min Sum decoder. This paper explores the blind decoding of control channels for obtaining other user identities in 3GPP specification, such as high-speed packet access and long-term evolution. The reliable decoding of control channels with user identities is crucial to mitigate inter-cell interference as well as multi-user interference. This paper exploits a method of user identity filtering followed by a method of user identity detection based on the traffic persistency, which is common to all standards. Hence, the proposed methods are applicable to all the standards regulated by 3GPP specification. In particular, this paper analyzes the proposed other user identity detection algorithm under the random coding. This paper presents a general approach for optimizing the number of symbols in increments (packets of incremental redundancy) in a feedback communication system with a limited number of increments. This approach is based on a tight normal approximation on the rate for successful decoding. Applying this approach to a variety of feedback systems using nonbinary (NB) low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes shows that greater than 90% of capacity can be achieved with average blocklengths fewer than 500 transmitted bits. One result is that the performance with ten increments closely approaches the performance with an infinite number of increments. The paper focuses on binary-input additive-white Gaussian noise (BI-AWGN) channels but also demonstrates that the normal approximation works well on examples of fading channels as well as high-SNR AWGN channels that require larger QAM constellations. This paper considers the problem of source coding with side information at the decoder, also called Slepian–Wolf source coding scheme. In practical applications of this coding scheme, the statistical relation between the source and the side information can vary from one data transmission to another, and there is a need to adapt the coding rate depending on the current statistical relation. In this paper, we propose a novel rate-adaptive code construction based on LDPC codes for the Slepian–Wolf source coding scheme. The proposed code design method allows to optimize the code degree distributions at all the considered rates, while minimizing the amount of short cycles in the parity check matrices at all rates. The construction of a quasi-cyclic low density parity-check (QC-LDPC) matrix is usually carried out in two steps. In the first step, a prototype matrix is defined according to certain criteria (size, girth, check and variable node degrees, and so on). The second step involves the expansion of the prototype matrix. During this last phase, an integer value is assigned to each non-null position in the prototype matrix corresponding to the right-rotation of the identity matrix. The problem of determining these integer values is complex. The state-of-the-art solutions use either some mathematical constructions to guarantee a given girth of the final QC-LDPC code, or a random search of values until the target girth is satisfied. In this paper, we propose an alternative/complementary method that reduces the search space by defining large equivalence classes of topologically identical matrices through row and column permutations using additive, structural, and multiplicative transformations. Selecting only a single element per equivalence class can reduce the search space by a few orders of magnitude. Then, we use the formalism of constraint programming to list the exhaustive sets of solutions for a given girth and a given expansion factor. This paper focuses on the design and evaluation of pragmatic schemes for delay-sensitive communication. Specifically, this contribution studies the operation of data links that employ incremental redundancy as a means to shield information bits from the degradation associated with unreliable channels. While this inquiry puts forth a general methodology, exposition centers around erasure channels because they are well suited for analysis. Nevertheless, the goal is to identify both structural properties and design guidelines that are broadly applicable. Conceptually, this paper leverages a methodology, termed sequential differential optimization, aimed at identifying near-optimal block sizes for hybrid ARQ. This technique is applied to erasure channels and it is extended to scenarios where throughput is maximized subject to a constraint on the feedback rate. The analysis shows that the impact of the coding strategy adopted and the propensity of the channel to erase symbols naturally decouple when maximizing throughput. Ultimately, block size selection is informed by approximate distributions on the probability of decoding success at every stage of the incremental transmission process. This novel perspective, which rigorously bridges hybrid automatic repeat request and coding, offers a computationally efficient framework to select code rates and blocklengths for incremental redundancy. This paper addresses point-to-point communication over block-fading channels with independent fading blocks. When both channel state information at the transmitter and receiver (CSIR) are available, most achievable schemes use separable coding, i.e., coding independently and in parallel over different fading states. Unfortunately, separable coding has drawbacks, including large memory requirements at both communication ends. In this paper, a lattice coding and decoding scheme is proposed that achieves the ergodic capacity without separable coding, with lattice codebooks and decoding decision regions that are universal across channel realizations. We first demonstrate this result for fading distributions with discrete, finite support whose sequences are robustly typical. Results are then extended to continuous fading distributions, as well as multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. In addition, a variant of the proposed scheme is presented for the MIMO ergodic fading channel with CSIR only, where we prove the existence of a universal codebook that achieves rates within a constant gap to capacity for finite-support fading distributions. This paper presents a new construction of error correcting codes which achieves optimal recovery of a streaming source over a packet erasure channel. The channel model considered is the sliding-window erasure model, with burst and arbitrary losses, introduced by Badr et al. We present a simple construction, when the rate of the code is at least 1/2, which achieves optimal error correction in this setup. Our proposed construction is explicit and systematic. It uses off-the-shelf maximum distance separable (MDS) codes and maximum rank distance (MRD) Gabidulin block codes as constituent codes and combines them in a simple manner. This is in contrast to other recent works, where the construction involves a careful design of the generator or parity check matrix from first principles. This paper studies the distributed linearly separable computation problem, which is a generalization of many existing distributed computing problems such as distributed gradient coding and distributed linear transform. A master asks ${\mathsf {N}}$ distributed workers to compute a linearly separable function of ${\mathsf {K}}$ datasets, which is a set of ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ linear combinations of ${\mathsf {K}}$ equal-length messages (each message is a function of one dataset). We assign some datasets to each worker in an uncoded manner, who then computes the corresponding messages and returns some function of these messages, such that from the answers of any ${\mathsf {N}}_{\mathrm{ r}}$ out of ${\mathsf {N}}$ workers the master can recover the task function with high probability. In the literature, the specific case where ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}}=1$ or where the computation cost is minimum has been considered. In this paper, we focus on the general case (i.e., general ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}} $ and general computation cost) and aim to find the minimum communication cost. We first propose a novel converse bound on the communication cost under the constraint of the popular cyclic assignment (widely considered in the literature), which assigns the datasets to the workers in a cyclic way. Motivated by the observation that existing strategies for distributed computing fall short of achieving the converse bound, we propose a novel distributed computing scheme for some system parameters. The proposed computing scheme is optimal for any assignment when ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ is large and is optimal under the cyclic assignment when the numbers of workers and datasets are equal or ${\mathsf {K}}_{\mathrm{ c}}$ is small. This paper investigates the design of non-binary protograph low-density parity-check codes for the Poisson channel with $m$ -ary pulse position modulation. The field order over which the code is constructed is matched to the pulse position modulation order yielding a coded modulation scheme. The optimization of the low-density parity-check code structure is performed via protograph density evolution on a surrogate $m$ -ary erasure channel. The surrogate design is illustrated to be not only accurate, but also robust for a range of practical values of channel background noise and various modulation orders. As a result the proposed codes show excellent performance over the Poisson channel with pulse position modulation outperforming competing schemes. As a side-product of this paper, finite-length benchmarks on the block error probability are provided, together with a union bound to characterize the code performance in the error floor region. The growing number of Internet of Thing (IoT) and Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communications (URLCC) use cases in next generation communication networks calls for the development of efficient Forward Error Correction (FEC) mechanisms. These use cases usually imply using short to mid-sized information blocks and requires low-complexity and/or fast decoding procedures. This paper investigates the joint learning of short to mid block-length coding schemes and associated Belief-Propagation (BP) like decoders using Machine Learning (ML) techniques. An interpretable auto-encoder (AE) architecture is proposed, ensuring scalability to block sizes currently challenging for ML-based linear block code design approaches. By optimizing a coding scheme w.r.t. the targeted decoder, the proposed system offers a good complexity/performance trade-off compared to various codes from literature with length up to 128 bits. Light nodes in blockchains improve the scalability of the system by storing a small portion of the blockchain ledger. In certain blockchains, light nodes are vulnerable to a data availability (DA) attack where a malicious node makes the light nodes accept an invalid block by hiding the invalid portion of the block from the nodes in the system. Recently, a technique based on LDPC codes called Coded Merkle Tree (CMT) was proposed by Yu et al. that enables light nodes to detect a DA attack by randomly requesting/sampling portions of the block from the malicious node. However, light nodes fail to detect a DA attack with high probability if a malicious node hides a small stopping set of the LDPC code. To mitigate this problem, Yu et al. used random LDPC codes that achieve large minimum stopping set size with high probability. Although effective, these codes are not necessarily optimal for this application, especially at short code lengths, which are relevant for low latency systems, IoT blockchains, etc.. In this paper, we focus on short code lengths and demonstrate that a suitable co-design of specialized LDPC codes and the light node sampling strategy can improve the probability of detection of DA attacks. We consider different adversary models based on their computational capabilities of finding stopping sets in LDPC codes. For a weak adversary model, we devise a new LDPC code construction termed as the entropy-constrained PEG (EC-PEG) algorithm which concentrates stopping sets to a small group of variable nodes. We demonstrate that the EC-PEG algorithm coupled with a greedy sampling strategy improves the probability of detection of DA attacks. For stronger adversary models, we provide a co-design of a sampling strategy called linear-programming-sampling (LP-sampling) and an LDPC code construction called linear-programming-constrained PEG (LC-PEG) algorithm. Linear coding schemes have been the main choice of coding for the additive white Gaussian noise broadcast channel (AWGN-BC) with noiseless feedback in the literature. The achievable rate regions of these schemes go well beyond the capacity region of the AWGN-BC without feedback. In this paper, a concatenated coding design for the $K$-user AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is proposed that relies on linear schemes as inner codes to achieve rate tuples outside the no-feedback capacity region. The boundary of an achievable rate region of purely linear coding schemes for noiseless feedback is shown to be arbitrarily closely approached by the concatenated coding scheme for sufficiently small feedback noise levels. Then, a linear coding scheme for the $K$-user symmetric AWGN-BC with noisy feedback is presented and optimized for use in the concatenated coding scheme. For noiseless feedback, the presented linear coding scheme achieves the optimal sum-rate of linear-feedback coding. A primary source of increased read time on nand flash comes from the fact that, in the presence of noise, the flash medium must be read several times using different read threshold voltages for the decoder to succeed. This paper proposes an algorithm that uses a limited number of rereads to characterize the noise distribution and recover the stored information. Both hard and soft decoding are considered. For hard decoding, this paper attempts to find a read threshold minimizing bit error rate (BER) and derives an expression for the resulting codeword error rate. For soft decoding, it shows that minimizing BER and minimizing codeword error rate are competing objectives in the presence of a limited number of allowed rereads, and proposes a tradeoff between the two. The proposed method does not require any prior knowledge about the noise distribution but can take advantage of such information when it is available. Each read threshold is chosen based on the results of previous reads, following an optimal policy derived through a dynamic programming backward recursion. The method and results are studied from the perspective of an SLC Flash memory with Gaussian noise, but this paper explains how the method could be extended to other scenarios. In this paper, the role of feedback in two-way full-duplex Gaussian channel (TW-FD-GC) is revisited. First, we propose a practical coding scheme for the TW-FD-GC, which is based on the noisy type of the well-known Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) feedback scheme. We show that though this scheme cannot achieve the capacity of the TW-FD-GC, the codeword length that achieves desired decoding error probability is extremely short. Then, we further prove that the proposed scheme is secure by itself, i.e., the achievable rate region of the proposed scheme is also an achievable secrecy rate region of the two-way full-duplex Gaussian wiretap channel (TW-FD-GWTC). In addition, for the TW-FD-GWTC, numerical result shows that the secrecy sum rate of our proposed scheme can be as large as those achieved by existing schemes in the literature for some cases. Next, we extend the proposed scheme to the TW-FD-GC with Gaussian state interference non-causally known by the corresponding transmitter. We show that the interference can be perfectly canceled by this extended scheme. Finally, we prove that this extended scheme is also secure by itself, and numerical result shows that this extended scheme may perform better than the existing ones in the literature. The design of zero-delay Joint Source-Channel Coding (JSCC) schemes for the transmission of correlated information over fading Multiple Access Channels (MACs) is an interesting problem for many communication scenarios like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Among the different JSCC schemes so far proposed for this scenario, Distributed Quantizer Linear Coding (DQLC) represents an appealing solution since it is able to outperform uncoded transmissions for any correlation level at high Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) with a low computational cost. In this paper, we extend the design of DQLC-based schemes for fading MACs considering sphere decoding to make the optimal Minimum Mean Squared Error (MMSE) estimation computationally affordable for an arbitrary number of transmit users. The use of sphere decoding also allows to formulate a practical algorithm for the optimization of DQLC-based systems. Finally, non-linear Kalman Filtering for the DQLC is considered to jointly exploit the temporal and spatial correlation of the source symbols. The results of computer experiments show that the proposed DQLC scheme with the Kalman Filter decoding approach clearly outperforms uncoded transmissions for medium and high SNRs. This paper considers the design of short non-binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes over finite fields of order $m$ , for channels with phase noise. In particular, $m$ -ary differential phase-shift keying (DPSK)-modulated code symbols are transmitted over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel with the Wiener phase noise. At the receiver side, non-coherent detection takes place, with the help of a multi-symbol detection algorithm, followed by a non-binary decoding step. Both the detector and the decoder operate on a joint factor graph. As a benchmark, finite length bounds and information rate expressions are computed and compared with the codeword error rate (CER) performance, as well as the iterative threshold of the obtained codes. This paper proposes multilevel Reed–Solomon (MRS) codes and their iterative multistage soft decoding (IMSD) for visible light communication (VLC), realizing both high decoding performance and transmission spectrum efficiency. The proposed IMSD algorithm decodes the MRS codes level-by-level through iterating either hard decisions or extrinsic information of RS coded bits. Each level RS decoding is realized by cascading the adaptive belief propagation (ABP) algorithm that produces the extrinsic information and the Berlekamp–Massey (BM) algorithm that estimates the codeword. The earlier level decoding provides better a priori information for the later ones. A complexity reducing IMSD (CR-IMSD) algorithm is also proposed to facilitate the decoding. This paper further investigates a joint design of color-shift keying (CSK) constellation and the MRS code, optimizing the decoding performance. The CSK constellation is designed by considering both the set partitioning (SP) criterion and the harmonic mean of constellation’s minimum squared Euclidean distance (MSED). The MRS codes are further designed using the capacity and the equal error probability rules. Our simulation results show that the IMSD algorithm achieves significant iterative decoding gains. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. Various techniques have been proposed to address the problem of resource allocation in multi-carrier communications. These techniques, for the most part, arise from information-theoretic measures or otherwise associated with the channel behavior, which does not necessarily model the coding being employed. In this paper, an optimization technique is tailored for low density parity-check (LDPC) coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, by employing the so-called general stability condition introduced by Richardson et al. The latter formulates a necessary condition for the belief-propagation decoder to perfectly decode a received vector with no errors. The general condition is re-formulated so as to model practical multi-carrier systems, such as OFDM. Consequently, a general resource-allocation framework is laid down for optimizing the transmitted power based on the characteristics of the LDPC code in use. The proposed optimization technique is utilized for power allocation in orthogonal frequency-division multiple access systems; and the transmitted power is minimized while guaranteeing reliable decoding. To validate the proposed approach, it is compared to information-theoretic-based methods that aim at optimizing the mutual information between the transmitter and the receiver. In this paper, two new decoding algorithms to decode Reed–Solomon codes during transmission over burst Rayleigh fading channels with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) are proposed. They only conduct error correction for coded symbols located in the pure AWGN region and conduct error and erasure correction for those symbols located in the burst fading region by treating those coded symbols that are very likely erroneous as erasures. The first algorithm does not need to know the fading locations in advance, while the second algorithm assumes that the fading locations are known. In addition, the performance of such two algorithms is studied when a pre-computed threshold is used to determine the erasures of the code. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms not only significantly perform better than the classic Berlekamp–Messay algorithm with a comparable computational complexity but also achieve a better tradeoff between the performance and the computational complexity when compared with other existing algorithms. In particular, our algorithms exhibit excellent robustness for tested various code parameters and fading configurations. Furthermore, a more detailed mathematical analysis is also developed in this paper in order to estimate the performance of the new algorithms in the burst Rayleigh fading channels. We observe that the performance of the first algorithm can only be estimated relatively accurately when encountering burst deep-fading, whereas the performance prediction for the second algorithm is always in agreement with the simulation results for various fading cases. Iterative decoding is an efficient error-correction tool based on the exchange of extrinsic probabilities between the constituent decoders. In this paper, the properties of the mutual information between the extrinsic LLR at the output of two constituent decoders are analyzed with application to turbo and LDPC codes. This is a bridge between information-theoretic analysis and practical implementations. It is proved here that the mutual information between extrinsics is a lower bound of the mutual information between each extrinsic and the transmitted message. In addition, an efficient online evaluation is provided in the paper with accuracy validated through numerical experiments. As an application, the mutual information between extrinsics is used for designing efficient stopping criterion and error detection rules at the decoder side. Two online methods for the estimation of optimal scaling factor to be applied to the extrinsic LLR are also derived. In contrast with most references, an analytical expression is obtained that does not require estimation of the actual transmitted bits. This paper analyzes the reliability and throughput of the telegram-splitting concept in the presence of inter-system and intra-system interference. Using telegram splitting, the data of one telegram is split into multiple sub-packets, which are then transmitted with temporal spacing. As a result, collisions with other telegrams destroy only some sub-packets that can be recovered using forward error correction. Consequently, the reliability of the data transmission in case of inter- and intra-system interference—a significant problem in license-exempt bands—is highly improved. In this paper, probabilities for the resulting telegram error rate of random media access systems using telegram splitting are derived. Furthermore, the achievable throughput is analyzed. Recent physical-layer designs capable of decoding multi-packet collisions demonstrate great potential for improving the network performance. Current network protocols, however, tailor the traditional physical layer to avoid collisions and thus cannot fully exploit the benefits of concurrent transmission techniques. In this paper, we propose an innovative generic concurrent transmission aware routing design called mShare. The mShare design exploits the benefits of these techniques by scheduling concurrent senders to utilize co-owned receiver(s) in parallel. This design significantly increases the available number of routing choices and thus improves the network performance. To illustrate the versatility of our design, we test mShare in three settings: unicast, opportunistic routing, and data collection (convergecast). The performance of mShare is evaluated with physical testbed experiments running on USRP and simulations. The experimental results show that compared to conventional designs, mShare: 1) improves 277% of the throughput in unicast; 2) saves 78% of transmissions in opportunistic routing; and 3) reduces 70% of the delivery delay in data collection. In this paper, we present a new low-complexity iterative joint phase estimation and decoding algorithm which can be applied to low-density-parity-check (or turbo) codes for channels affected by strong phase noise. The algorithm exhibits a very good performance and a very low complexity even in strong phase noise, high code rate, and high-order constellations. The proposed algorithm works by first obtaining a preliminary pilots-aided phase estimation. Next, the expressions for the belief propagation messages are approximated around that reference and reduced to a Gaussian canonical form. This results in a simple closed form of a recursive update. Simulations results for phase-shift-keying modulation of size 8 and quadrature-amplitude modulation of size 64 are presented and compared with other algorithms in the literature. The error floor phenomenon in many low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes is caused by combinatorial objects in their Tanner graph, known as absorbing sets. In this paper, we highlight a threshold behavior for the min-sum decoding algorithm in the graph of an absorbing set with fixed-point representation of messages. For an absorbing set of interest in a binary LDPC code we can compute the threshold, a novel real-valued parameter that is closely related to its harmfulness. We show that absorbing sets with negative thresholds cannot trap the decoder if the dynamic range of the extrinsic messages is large enough. We also prove that, in regular LDPC codes, absorbing sets with negative thresholds exist if the variable node degree is odd. The examples presented in this paper show that odd-column-weight LDPC codes can have many absorbing sets with negative thresholds, but that these absorbing sets do not trap a well-designed decoder. A transmitter sends a packetized message over a fading channel using packet-level erasure coding and physical-layer channel coding of each resultant packet. Given an overall code rate, this paper finds the optimal rates of the erasure code and the channel code to minimize the transmit power required for a certain message error probability. This paper considers a practically important fading model in which the number of block fades in a transmitted channel codeword increases with the codeword length. Such a model applies, for example, in a time-varying channel with a fixed coherence time. The rate at which diversity grows with codeword length plays an important role in the optimization problem. If the diversity growth factor is large enough, then the erasure code plays a minor role, having an optimal rate that is essentially nondecreasing with decreasing overall rate. We prove analytically that, on a channel with linear growth in diversity, as overall rate decreases, the optimal erasure code rate eventually increases to its maximum possible value (e.g., a rate of 1 for an erasure code with no overhead). Additionally, we also consider the optimization problem of minimizing the message error probability given a transmit power. This paper considers the problem of analytically assessing the maximum achievable rates (capacity) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions when the receiver, for complexity reasons, only accounts for the common phase error (CPE) effect due to phase noise impairments with inter-carrier interference (ICI) treated as noise. By recognizing that the functional form of the CPE with respect to the phase noise realization is actually a free design parameter, determination of the capacity is posed as a functional optimization problem with respect to the, so-called, CPE function. A simple lower bound of the capacity is obtained, revealing the performance degradation due to the unknown CPE at the receiver, as well as the suboptimal performance achieved in severe phase noise conditions by the conventional CPE function that is routinely employed in previous works. The existence of an optimal number of subcarriers that balances the effects of the (unknown) CPE and ICI is highlighted and critical system design/operation issues, such as selection of the CPE function and effect of unknown channel on the achievable rate, are discussed. The analysis in this paper can be employed for determining the suitability of OFDM in phase noise channels and provides a tractable utility function for resource allocation purposes. The capacity of the AWGN broadcast channel is achieved by superposition coding, but the superposition of individual coded modulations expands the modulation alphabet and distorts its configuration. Hierarchical modulations, which appear in the literature mostly in the context of unequal error protection, can approach only a few isolated points on the boundary of the broadcast capacity region. This paper studies multilevel coding (MLC) for constellation-constrained broadcast-coded modulation. The conditions under which multilevel codes can achieve the constellation-constrained capacity of the AWGN broadcast channel are derived. We propose a pragmatic multilevel design technique with near-constellation-constrained-capacity performance where the coupling of the superposition inner and outer codes is localized to each bit-level. It is shown that this can be further relaxed to a code coupling on only one bit-level, with a little or no penalty under natural labeling. The rate allocation problem between the bit levels of the two users is studied and a pragmatic method is proposed, again with near-capacity performance. In further pursuit of lower complexity, a hybrid MLC-bit-interleaved-coded modulation is proposed, whose performance is shown to be very close to the boundary of the constellation-constrained capacity region. In this paper, we revisit the design of Raptor codes for binary input additive white Gaussian noise channels, where we are interested in very low signal to noise ratios (SNRs). A linear programming degree distribution optimization problem is defined for Raptor codes in the low SNR regime through several approximations. We also provide an exact expression for the polynomial representation of the degree distribution with infinite maximum output node degree in the low SNR regime, which enables us to calculate the exact value of the fractions of output nodes of small degrees. A more practical degree distribution design is also proposed for Raptor codes in the low SNR regime, where we include the rate efficiency and the decoding complexity in the optimization problem, and an upper bound on the maximum rate efficiency is derived for given design parameters. In this paper, we propose a downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) transmission scheme, which is assisted by an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) consisting of a large number of passive reflecting elements. In the literature, it has been proved that nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) can achieve the same performance as computationally complex dirty paper coding, where the quasi-degradation condition is satisfied, conditioned on the users’ channels fall in the quasi-degradation region. However, in a conventional communication scenario, it is difficult to guarantee the quasi-degradation, because the channels are determined by the propagation environments and cannot be reconfigured. To overcome this difficulty, we focus on an IRS-assisted MISO NOMA system, where the wireless channels can be effectively tuned. We optimize the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix for minimizing transmission power. Furthermore, we propose an improved quasi-degradation condition by using IRS, which can ensure that NOMA achieves the capacity region with high possibility. For a comparison, we study zero-forcing beamforming (ZFBF) as well, where the beamforming vectors and the IRS phase shift matrix are also jointly optimized. Comparing NOMA with ZFBF, it is shown that, with the same IRS phase shift matrix and the improved quasi-degradation condition, NOMA always outperforms ZFBF. At the same time, we identify the condition under which ZFBF outperforms NOMA, which motivates the proposed hybrid NOMA transmission. Simulation results show that the proposed IRS-assisted MISO system outperforms the MISO case without IRS, and the hybrid NOMA transmission scheme always achieves better performance than orthogonal multiple access. This paper proposes a new probabilistic amplitude shaping (PAS) approach for concatenated two-level multi-level coding (MLC). The proposed system is based on a concatenated forward error correction (FEC) scheme where outer codes are serially concatenated with inner two-level MLC. This concatenated two-level MLC scheme has recently been shown to have a potential for achieving better performance-complexity trade-offs than the conventional bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM). Meanwhile, PAS has recently been demonstrated to offer remarkable performance gains as well as rate adaptivity. However, the majority of existing works on PAS assume the use of the binary reflected Gray code as a bit-labeling, and its application to coded modulation schemes with other bit-labelings, such as two-level MLC, may not be straightforward. In this paper, we devise a bit-labeling scheme and propose a new PAS structure for an efficient integration of PAS with two-level MLC systems. More specifically, we propose to generate signed amplitude symbols with the distribution matcher (DM) for maximizing both coding and shaping gains achieved by two-level MLC and PAS, respectively, while the conventional PAS generates unsigned amplitude symbols. It is demonstrated by simulation results that, with 256QAM and inner polar codes, the proposed two-level MLC with PAS simultaneously offers 75% reduction in the number of required inner encoding and soft-decision (SD) decoding operations for given outer and inner FEC code lengths, and up to 0.3 dB performance gain over the conventional PAS scheme. In this paper, we propose an optimization method for protograph-based spatially coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) codes under window decoding (WD). Previous works on constructing SC-LDPC codes for WD typically focused on optimizing asymptotic performance metrics such as the WD threshold. However, in this paper, it is observed that the WD threshold is not an appropriate metric to sufficiently explain the finite-length behavior of SC-LDPC codes under WD. Thus, we propose a new performance metric, called the window mean parameter, based on a scaling analysis to capture the WD performance more accurately and formulate a code optimization algorithm that optimizes the proposed performance metric. Since the proposed metric depends on the window size, the optimization algorithm can provide a code family of SC-LDPC codes optimized for various target window sizes. Simulation results confirm that the improvement in the proposed metric leads to a finite-length performance improvement, resulting in one to two orders of the frame error rate gain over the conventional SC-LDPC codes for a wide range of window sizes. Furthermore, we investigate structural characteristics of the proposed codes to provide a supplementary explanation for the performance improvement, which also promotes a better understanding of SC-LDPC codes for WD. Despite the great promises that the resistive random access memory (ReRAM) has shown as the next generation of non-volatile memory technology, its crossbar array structure leads to a severe sneak path interference to the signal read back from the memory cell. In this paper, we first propose a novel belief propagation (BP) based detector for the sneak path interference in ReRAM. Based on the conditions for a sneak path to occur and the dependence of the states of the memory cells that are involved in the sneak path, a Tanner graph for the ReRAM channel is constructed, inside which specific messages are updated iteratively to get a better estimation of the sneak path affected cells. We further combine the graph of the designed BP detector with that of the BP decoder of the polar codes to form a joint detector and decoder. Tailored for the joint detector and decoder over the ReRAM channel, effective polar codes are constructed using the genetic algorithm. Simulation results show that the BP detector can effectively detect the cells affected by the sneak path, and the proposed polar codes and the joint detector and decoder can significantly improve the error rate performance of ReRAM. In this paper, we investigate the outage performance of an uplink (UL) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based hybrid satellite-terrestrial relay network (HSTRN), in which two users communicate with the satellite through a decode-and-forward (DF) relay due to the lack of direct link. To provide a comprehensive yet hitherto unexplored outage analysis framework, we consider a more generalized channel model, i.e., the terrestrial and satellite links, respectively, undergo $\alpha -\mu $ and $\kappa -\mu $ shadowed fadings. Under fixed power allocation (FPA) for both multiple access phase and relaying phase, we firstly study three successive interference cancellation (SIC) decoding schemes, of which the first two are refined from existing schemes, while the third one, named as extended SIC (ESIC), is proposed in this paper to satisfy the quality of service (QoS) decoding criterion, which is shown to offer better performances for both users as compared to the former two SIC schemes. We also propose a novel dynamic power allocation (DPA) scheme for the multiple access phase, termed as enhanced DPA (EDPA), to overcome both users’ error floor (EF) issue yet provide better user fairness than the conventional DPA in the literature. We then analyze the exact and asymptotic outage performance for three SIC and the EDPA schemes under the generalized channel setting. It is shown that both the proposed ESIC and EDPA can circumvent the EF issue and moreover, each has its own advantage in terms of the diversity order (DO). Our results also reveal that there exists a trade-off between ESIC and EDPA, since the former requires a premise on users’ targets rates to overcome the EF and once this premise is satisfied, no DO degradation will occur, while the latter does not entail such a premise but may face potential DO degradation. Finally, we present numerical results to verify the theoretical analysis, manifest the impacts of key parameters on the system performance, and demonstrate the advantages of our proposed network over other benchmarks. The prefixed Varshamov-Tenengolts (VT) codes, which are subsets of VT codes with predetermined prefixes, can be used for error correction over segmented edit channels. In this paper, we investigate the construction and analysis of this class of codes. First, we derive upper bounds on the size of zero-error codes for segmented edit channels with segment-by-segment decoding. Second, we establish a one-to-one correspondence between prefixed VT codes and Levenshtein codes. Based on this relation, we can obtain explicit formulas on the size of prefixed VT codes via the existing results on the size of Levenshtein codes. Third, we construct a new zero-error prefixed VT code and show that the size of the constructed code is strictly larger than that of the existing prefixed VT code for the segmented deletion channel. This paper is concerned with the dynamics of spatially-coupled low-density parity-check (SC-LDPC) ensembles for transmission on general binary memoryless symmetric (BMS) channels under belief-propagation (BP) decoding. The decoding waves of such ensembles are found to exhibit solitonic behavior, propagating along the Tanner graphs at asymptotically constant velocities. A low-complexity approach termed interpolated density evolution (IDE) is proposed to predict the decoding wave velocities. In this approach, the densities of a decoding wave are approximated by interpolating between some fixed points of an uncoupled DE recursion with one-dimensional functions. Two transfer functions for updating these interpolation functions in the IDE recursion are established and a simple strategy is introduced to deal with the coexistence of multiple transition regions. In addition, a threshold analysis is developed based on two ansatzes, explaining why our approach can achieve a good trade-off between computational cost and accuracy, as illustrated with some numerical examples at the end of this paper. In this paper we propose a novel turbo equalizer based on the expectation propagation (EP) algorithm. Optimal equalization is computationally unfeasible when high-order modulations and/or large memory channels are used. In these scenarios, low-cost and suboptimal equalizers, such as those based on the linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE), are commonly used. The LMMSE-based equalizer can be efficiently implemented with a Kalman smoother (KS), i.e., a forward and backward Kalman filtering whose predictions are merged in a posterior smoothing step. Recently, it was shown that applying EP at the forward and backward stages of a KS equalizer could significantly improve its performance. In this paper, we investigate applying EP at the smoothing level instead. Also, we propose some further modifications to better exploit the information coming from the channel decoder in turbo equalization schemes. In this paper, we present hardware and software implementations of flexible polar systematic encoders and decoders. The proposed implementations operate on polar codes of any length less than a maximum and of any rate. We describe the low-complexity, highly parallel, and flexible systematic-encoding algorithm that we use and prove its correctness. Our hardware implementation results show that the overhead of adding code rate and length flexibility is little, and the impact on operation latency minor compared with code-specific versions. Motivated by applications of distributed storage systems to key-value stores, the multi-version coding problem has been formulated to efficiently store frequently updated data in asynchronous decentralized storage systems. Inspired by consistency requirements in distributed systems, the main goal in the multi-version coding problem is to ensure that the latest possible version of the data is decodable even if the data updates have not reached all the servers in the system. In this paper, we study the storage cost of ensuring consistency for the case where the data versions are correlated, in contrast to previous work where the data versions were treated as being independent. We provide multi-version code constructions that show that the storage cost can be significantly smaller than the previous constructions depending on the degree of correlation, despite the asynchrony and the decentralized nature. Our achievability results are based on Reed–Solomon codes and random binning. This paper studies the problem of global optimization of zero-delay source-channel codes that map between the source space and the channel space, under a given transmission power constraint and for the mean-square-error distortion. Particularly, we focus on two well-known network settings: the Wyner-Ziv setting where only a decoder has access to side information and the distributed setting where independent encoders transmit over independent channels to a central decoder. Prior work derived the necessary conditions for optimality of the encoder and decoder mappings, along with a greedy optimization algorithm that imposes these conditions iteratively, in conjunction with the heuristic noisy channel relaxation method to mitigate poor local minima. While noisy channel relaxation is arguably effective in simple settings, it fails to provide accurate global optimization in more complicated settings considered in this paper. We propose a powerful nonconvex optimization method based on the concept of deterministic annealing—which is derived from information theoretic principles and was successfully employed in several problems including vector quantization, classification, and regression. In this paper, we consider transmissions over block-fading channels and assume that adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) are implemented. Knowing that in high signal-to-noise ratio, the conventional combination of HARQ with AMC is counterproductive from the throughput point of view, we adopt the so-called layer-coded HARQ (L-HARQ). L-HARQ allows consecutive packets to share the channel and preserves a great degree of separation between AMC and HARQ; this makes the encoding and decoding very simple and allows us to use the available/optimized codes. Numerical examples shown in this paper indicate that L-HARQ can provide significant throughput gains compared to the conventional HARQ. In this paper, we study a layered random access scheme based on non-orthogonal multiple access to improve the throughput of multichannel ALOHA. At a receiver, successive interference cancellation is carried out across layers to remove the signals that are already decoded. A closed-form expression for the total throughput is derived under certain assumptions. It is shown that the transmission rates of layers can be optimized to maximize the total throughput and the proposed scheme can improve the throughput with multiple layers. Furthermore, it is shown that the optimal rates can be recursively found using multiple individual 1-D optimizations. We also modify the proposed layered random access scheme with contention resolution repetition diversity for reliable transmissions with a delay constraint.
