In this paper, we present a practical method to construct dirty paper coding (DPC) schemes using sum codes. Unlike the commonly used approach to DPC where the coding scheme involves concatenation of a channel code and a quantization code, the proposed method embodies a unified approach that emulates the binning method used in the proof of the DPC result. Auxiliary bits are used to create the desired number of code vectors in each bin. Sum codes are obtained when information sequences augmented with auxiliary bits are encoded using linear block codes. Sum-code-based DPC schemes can be implemented using any linear block code, and entail a relatively small increase in decoder complexity when compared to standard communication schemes. The future connectivity landscape, and notably, the 5G wireless systems will feature Ultra-Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC). The coupling of high reliability and low latency requirements in URLLC use cases makes the wireless access design very challenging, in terms of both the protocol design and of the associated transmission techniques. This paper aims to provide a broad perspective on the fundamental tradeoffs in URLLC, as well as the principles used in building access protocols. Two specific technologies are considered in the context of URLLC: massive MIMO and multi-connectivity, also termed interface diversity. This paper provides an analytical performance characterization of both the uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) user-centric network multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, where a cooperating base station (BS) cluster is formed for each user individually and the clusters for different users may overlap. In this model, cooperating BSs (each equipped with multiple antennas) jointly perform zero-forcing beamforming to the set of single-antenna users associated with them. As compared with a baseline network MIMO system with disjoint BS clusters, the effect of user-centric clustering is that it improves signal strength in both the UL and DL, while reducing cluster-edge interference in the DL. This paper quantifies these effects by assuming that BSs and users form Poisson point processes and by further approximating both the signal and interference powers using Gamma distributions of appropriate parameters. We show that BS cooperation provides significant gain as compared to single-cell processing for both the UL and DL, but the advantage of user-centric clustering over the baseline disjoint clustering system is significant for the DL cluster-edge users only. Although the analytic results are derived with the assumption of perfect channel state information and infinite backhaul between the cooperating BSs, they nevertheless provide architectural insight into the design of the future cooperative cellular networks. Recent studies on cloud-radio access networks assume either signal-level or scheduling-level coordination. This paper considers a hybrid coordinated scheme as a means to benefit from both policies. Consider the downlink of a multi-cloud radio access network, where each cloud is connected to several base-stations (BSs) via high capacity links and, therefore, allows for joint signal processing within the cloud transmission. Across the multiple clouds, however, only scheduling-level coordination is permitted, as low levels of backhaul communication are feasible. The frame structure of every BS is composed of various time/frequency blocks, called power-zones (PZs), which are maintained at a fixed power level. This paper addresses the problem of maximizing a network-wide utility by associating users to clouds and scheduling them to the PZs, under the practical constraints that each user is scheduled to a single cloud at most, but possibly to many BSs within the cloud, and can be served by one or more distinct PZs within the BSs’ frame. This paper solves the problem using graph theory techniques by constructing the conflict graph. The considered scheduling problem is, then, shown to be equivalent to a maximum-weight independent set problem in the constructed graph, which can be solved using efficient techniques. This paper then proposes solving the problem using both optimal and heuristic algorithms that can be implemented in a distributed fashion across the network. The proposed distributed algorithms rely on the well-chosen structure of the constructed conflict graph utilized to solve the maximum-weight independent set problem. Simulation results suggest that the proposed optimal and heuristic hybrid scheduling strategies provide appreciable gain as compared with the scheduling-level coordinated networks, with a negligible degradation to signal-level coordination. This paper proposes a novel scalable reinforcement learning approach for simultaneous routing and spectrum access in wireless ad-hoc networks. In most previous works on reinforcement learning for network optimization, the network topology is assumed to be fixed, and a different agent is trained for each transmission node—this limits scalability and generalizability. Further, routing and spectrum access are typically treated as separate tasks. Moreover, the optimization objective is usually a cumulative metric along the route, e.g., number of hops or delay. In this paper, we account for the physical-layer signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) in a wireless network and further show that bottleneck objective such as the minimum SINR along the route can also be optimized effectively using reinforcement learning. Specifically, we propose a scalable approach in which a single agent is associated with each flow and makes routing and spectrum access decisions as it moves along the frontier nodes. The agent is trained according to the physical-layer characteristics of the environment using a novel rewarding scheme based on the Monte Carlo estimation of the future bottleneck SINR. It learns to avoid interference by intelligently making joint routing and spectrum allocation decisions based on the geographical location information of the neighbouring nodes. The universal filtered multicarrier (UFMC) modulation is among the most considered solutions for the realization of beyond orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) air interfaces for future wireless networks. This paper focuses on the design and analysis of a UFMC transceiver equipped with multiple antennas and operating at millimeter-wave carrier frequencies. This paper provides the full mathematical model of an MIMO-UFMC transceiver, taking into account the presence of hybrid analog/digital beamformers at both ends of the communication links. Then, several detection structures are proposed, both for the case of single-packet isolated transmission and for the case of multiple-packet continuous transmission. In the latter situation, this paper also considers the case in which no guard time among adjacent packets is inserted, trading off an increased level of interference with higher values of spectral efficiency. At the analysis stage, several considered detection structures and transmission schemes are compared in terms of bit-error rate, root-mean-square error, and system throughput. The numerical results show that the proposed transceiver algorithms are effective and that the linear minimum mean-square error (MMSE) data detector is capable of well managing the increased interference brought by the removal of guard times among consecutive packets, thus yielding throughput gains of about 10%–13%. The effect of phase noise at the receiver is also numerically assessed, and it is shown that the recursive implementation of the linear MMSE exhibits some degree of robustness against this disturbance. This paper studies the outage capacity of a network consisting of a multitude of heterogeneous mobile users and operating according to the classical opportunistic beamforming framework. The base station is located at the center of the cell, which is modeled as a disk of finite radius. The random user locations are modeled using a homogeneous spatial Poisson point process. The received signals are impaired by both fading and location dependent path loss. For this system, we first derive an expression for the beam outage probability. This expression holds for all path loss models that satisfy some mild conditions. Then, we focus on two specific path loss models (i.e., an unbounded model and a more realistic bounded one) to illustrate the applications of our results. In the large system limit, where the cell radius tends to infinity, the beam outage capacity and its scaling behavior are derived for the selected specific path loss models. This paper also studies opportunistic schemes that achieve fairness among the heterogeneous users. In this paper, we analyze the sum rate performance of multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems, with a finite constellation phase-shift keying (PSK) input alphabet. We analytically calculate and compare the achievable sum rate in three downlink transmission scenarios: 1) without precoding; 2) with zero forcing (ZF) precoding; and 3) with closed form constructive interference (CI) precoding technique. In light of this, new analytical expressions for the average sum rate are derived in the three cases, and Monte Carlo simulations are provided throughout to validate the analysis. Furthermore, based on the derived expressions, a power allocation scheme that can ensure fairness among the users is also proposed. The results in this work demonstrate that the CI strictly outperforms the other two schemes, and the performance gap between the considered schemes increases with the increase in MIMO size. This paper considers the uplink performance of a multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) system with mobile users. Mobility brings two major problems to a MIMO-OFDM system: inter carrier interference (ICI) and channel aging. In practice, it is common to allot multiple contiguous subcarriers to a user as well as schedule multiple users on each subcarrier. Motivated by this, we consider a general subcarrier allocation scheme and derive expressions for the ICI power, uplink signal to interference plus noise ratio and the achievable uplink sum-rate, taking into account the ICI and the multi-user interference due to channel aging. We show that the system incurs a near-constant ICI power that depends linearly on the ratio of the number of users per subcarrier to the number of subcarriers per user, nearly independently of how the UEs distribute their power across the subcarriers. Further, we exploit the coherence bandwidth of the channel to reduce the length of the pilot sequences required for uplink channel estimation. We consider both zero-forcing and maximal-ratio combining at the receiver and compare the respective sum-rate performances. In either case, the subcarrier allocation scheme considered in this paper leads to significantly higher sum-rates compared to previous work, owing to the near-constant ICI property as well as the reduced pilot overhead. This paper proposes a new paradigm for spectrum sharing between cellular wireless communications (CWC) and radio astronomy systems (RAS). In contrast to the existing paradigm of geographical and spectral isolation between CWC and RAS, this paper develops a three phase spectrum access, which enables geographical and spectral coexistence between CWC and RAS. Shared spectrum access zone (SSAZ) is created around the RAS site and CWC cells within the SSAZ follow the three phase spectrum access scheme while those outside the SSAZ have full spectrum access. In addition, system characteristics-based improved spectrum sharing is developed. Furthermore, a built-in fine tuning mechanism is presented for addressing mismatches between design and practical environments as well as for facilitating service evolutions. Performance evaluation results demonstrate that the proposed paradigm offers 1) certain guaranteed spectrum access to RAS, which is impossible in the existing paradigm, 2) capability to handle higher peak and mean traffics to CWC under spectrum restructuring of both CWC and RAS bands, and 3) overall improved spectrum utilization. This paper studies the precoder design problem of achieving max-min fairness (MMF) amongst users in multigateway multibeam satellite communication systems with feeder link interference. We propose a beamforming strategy based on a newly introduced transmission scheme known as rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA). RSMA relies on multi-antenna rate-splitting at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receivers, such that the intended message for a user is split into a common part and a private part and the interference is partially decoded and partially treated as noise. In this paper, we formulate the MMF problem subject to per-antenna power constraints at the satellite for the system with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT). We also consider the case of two-stage precoding which is assisted by on- board processing (OBP) at the satellite. Numerical results obtained through simulations for RSMA and the conventional linear precoding method are compared. When RSMA is used, MMF rate gain is promised and this gain increases when OBP is used. RSMA is proven to be promising for multigateway multibeam satellite systems whereby there are various practical challenges such as feeder link interference, CSIT uncertainty, per-antenna power constraints, uneven user distribution per beam and frame-based processing. This paper explores the blind decoding of control channels for obtaining other user identities in 3GPP specification, such as high-speed packet access and long-term evolution. The reliable decoding of control channels with user identities is crucial to mitigate inter-cell interference as well as multi-user interference. This paper exploits a method of user identity filtering followed by a method of user identity detection based on the traffic persistency, which is common to all standards. Hence, the proposed methods are applicable to all the standards regulated by 3GPP specification. In particular, this paper analyzes the proposed other user identity detection algorithm under the random coding. Doppler effect is a fundamental phenomenon that appears in wave propagation, where a moving observer experiences dilation or contraction of the wavelength of a wave. It also appears in radio frequency (RF) wireless communication when there exists a relative movement between the transmitter and the receiver, and is widely considered as a major impairment for reliable wireless communication. The current paper proposes Doppler assisted wireless communication (DAWC) that exploits Doppler effect and uses kinetic energy for co-channel interference (CCI) mitigation. The proposed system also exploits the propagation environment and the network topology and consists of an access point (AP) with a rotating drum antenna. The rotating drum receive antenna is designed in such a way that it shifts the interfering signals away from the desired signal band. This paper includes a detailed system model, and the results show that under favorable fading conditions, CCI can be significantly reduced. Faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) transmission employing antenna polarization multiplexing and higher order modulation (HoM) schemes can significantly increase the spectral efficiency (SE) of the existing wireless backhaul links. However, the benefits of each of these SE enhancement techniques come with a price. While FTN introduces inter-symbol interference, a dual-polarized (DP) transmission suffers from cross-polarization interference (XPI), and HoM makes a communication system vulnerable to phase-noise (PN) distortions. In this paper, we investigate, for the first time, a DP-FTN HoM transmission system. We propose a XPI cancellation and PN mitigation structure, coupled with adaptive decision-feedback equalization or linear precoding, to jointly mitigate interference and accomplish carrier-phase tracking. The DP systems combined with the FTN signaling presented in this paper offer more than 150% increase in SE compared with a single-polarized Nyquist transmission. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithms is demonstrated through computer simulations of a coded DP-FTN microwave communication system in the presence of PN. Numerical results suggest that with the proposed interference cancellation methods, a DP-FTN transmission can yield a 3–5.5-dB performance improvement over an equivalent DP-Nyquist system that employs a higher modulation order to achieve the same data rate. Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is an alternative topology for future wireless networks, where a large number of single-antenna access points (APs) are distributed over the coverage area. There are no cells but all users are jointly served by the APs using network MIMO methods. Prior works have claimed that the CF massive MIMO inherits the basic properties of cellular massive MIMO, namely, channel hardening and favorable propagation. In this paper, we evaluate if one can rely on these properties when having a realistic stochastic AP deployment. Our results show that channel hardening only appears in special cases, for example, when the pathloss exponent is small. However, by using 5–10 antennas per AP, instead of one, we can substantially improve the hardening. Only spatially well-separated users will exhibit favorable propagation, but when adding more antennas and/or reducing the pathloss exponent, it becomes more likely for favorable propagation to occur. The conclusion is that we cannot rely on the channel hardening and the favorable propagation when analyzing and designing the CF massive MIMO networks, but we need to use achievable rate expressions and resource allocation schemes that work well also in the absence of these properties. This paper analyzes an emerging architecture of cellular network utilizing both planar base stations uniformly distributed in the Euclidean plane and base stations located on roads. An example of this architecture is that where, in addition to conventional planar cellular base stations and users, vehicles also play the role of both base stations and users. A Poisson line process is used to model the road network and, conditionally on the lines, linear Poisson point processes are used to model the vehicles on the roads. The conventional planar base stations and users are modeled by the independent planar Poisson point processes. We use Palm calculus to investigate the statistical properties of a typical user in such a network. Specifically, this paper discusses two different Palm distributions, with respect to the user point processes depending on its type: planar or vehicular. We derive the distance to the nearest base station, the association of the typical users, and the coverage probability of the typical user. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive characterization of coverage of all possible cellular transmissions in this setting, namely, vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, infrastructure-to-vehicle, and infrastructure-to-infrastructure. Minimizing the symbol error in the uplink of multi-user multiple input multiple output systems is important, because the symbol error affects the achieved signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and thereby the spectral efficiency of the system. Despite the vast literature available on minimum mean squared error (MMSE) receivers, previously proposed receivers for block fading channels do not minimize the symbol error in time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Specifically, we show that the true MMSE receiver structure does not only depend on the statistics of the CSI error, but also on the autocorrelation coefficient of the time-variant channel. It turns out that calculating the average SINR when using the proposed receiver is highly non-trivial. In this paper, we employ a random matrix theoretical approach, which allows us to derive a quasi-closed form for the average SINR, which allows to obtain analytical exact results that give valuable insights into how the SINR depends on the number of antennas, employed pilot and data power and the covariance of the time-varying channel. We benchmark the performance of the proposed receiver against recently proposed receivers and find that the proposed MMSE receiver achieves higher SINR than the previously proposed ones, and this benefit increases with increasing autoregressive coefficient. The emergence of interference alignment (IA) as a degrees-of-freedom optimal strategy motivates the need to investigate whether IA can be leveraged to aid conventional network utility maximization algorithms, which are typically only capable of finding locally optimal solutions. To test the usefulness of IA in this context, this paper proposes a two-stage optimization framework for the downlink of a $G$ -cell multi-antenna network with $K$ users/cell. The first stage of the proposed framework focuses on nulling interference from a set of dominant interferers using IA, while the second stage optimizes transmit and receive beamformers to maximize a network-wide utility using the IA solution as the initial condition. Further, this paper establishes a set of new feasibility results for partial IA that can be used to guide the number of dominant interferers to be nulled in the first stage. Through simulations on specific topologies of a cluster of base stations, it is observed that the impact of IA depends on the choice of the utility function and the presence of out-of-cluster interference. In the absence of out-of-cluster interference, the proposed framework outperforms straightforward optimization when maximizing the minimum rate, while providing marginal gains when maximizing sum rate. Hardware non-idealities are among the main performance restrictions for upcoming wireless communication systems. Asymmetric hardware distortions (HWD) happen when the impairments of the I/Q branches are correlated or imbalanced, which in turn generate improper additive interference at the receiver side. When the interference is improper, as well as in other interference-limited scenarios, improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) has been shown to provide rate and/or power efficiency benefits. In this paper, we investigate the rate benefits of IGS in a two-user interference channel (IC) with additive asymmetric HWD when interference is treated as noise. We propose two iterative algorithms to optimize the parameters of the improper transmit signals. We first rewrite the rate region as an pseudo-signal-to-interference-plus-noise-ratio (PSINR) region and employ majorization minimization and fractional programming to find a suboptimal solution for the achievable user rates. Then, we propose a simplified algorithm based on a separate optimization of the powers and complementary variances of the users, which exhibits lower computational complexity. We show that IGS can improve the performance of the two-user IC with additive HWD. Our proposed algorithms outperform proper Gaussian signaling and competing IGS algorithms in the literature that do not consider asymmetric HWD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The capacity of noisy channels with memory and finite input has been difficult to characterize explicitly in many cases. In this paper, we consider single-tap binary-input Gaussian channels with inter-symbol interference (ISI). The dual capacity method is used to obtain upper bounds using Markov test distributions. The bound, expressed as a single-letter optimization problem, is solved numerically. For higher memory, the notion of cycle basis is used to provide an exponential reduction in the computational complexity of the optimization problem. Bounds were obtained for the important case of the dicode channel, and these are better than the previously known upper bounds and are close to achievable rates over a wide range of SNRs. In this paper, we consider the joint base station (BS) association, power control, and beamforming problem for an uplink SISO/SIMO cellular network under the max-min fairness criterion. We first prove a strange discrepancy: a normalized fixed point (NFP) iterative algorithm has geometric convergence to global optima, but it only has pseudo-polynomial time complexity and thus whether the problem is NP-hard or not is an open question. In this paper, we resolve this discrepancy by proving that this problem is indeed polynomial-time solvable. Our proof is based on converting this mixed integer programming (MIP) problem to a series of auxiliary convex problems. Our results fill in a gap in the understanding of the computational complexity of BS association problem. Another implication of our result is that the uplink SIMO problem is easy, but either changing uplink to downlink or changing SIMO to MIMO will make the problem NP-hard. Empirically, the polynomial time algorithm converges much slower than the NFP algorithm, leaving open the question of whether a polynomial time algorithm that converges fast in practice exists for this problem. This paper presents novel numerical approaches to finding the secrecy capacity of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel subject to multiple linear transmit covariance constraints, including sum power constraint, per antenna power constraints and interference power constraint. An analytical solution to this problem is not known and existing numerical solutions suffer from slow convergence rate and/or high per-iteration complexity. Deriving computationally efficient solutions to the secrecy capacity problem is challenging since the secrecy rate is expressed as a difference of convex functions (DC) of the transmit covariance matrix, for which its convexity is only known for some special cases. In this paper we propose two low-complexity methods to compute the secrecy capacity along with a convex reformulation for degraded channels. In the first method we capitalize on the accelerated DC algorithm which requires solving a sequence of convex subproblems, for which we propose an efficient iterative algorithm where each iteration admits a closed-form solution. In the second method, we rely on the concave-convex equivalent reformulation of the secrecy capacity problem which allows us to derive the so-called partial best response algorithm to obtain an optimal solution. Notably, each iteration of the second method can also be done in closed form. The simulation results demonstrate a faster convergence rate of our methods compared to other known solutions. Cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) enable a network platform for beyond the fifth generation of communication networks (B5G), which incorporates the advances in cloud computing technologies to modern radio access networks. Recently, rate splitting multiple access (RSMA), relying on multi-antenna rate splitting (RS) at the transmitter and successive interference cancellation (SIC) at the receivers, has been shown to manage the interference in multi-antenna communication networks efficiently. This paper considers applying RSMA in C-RAN. We address the practical challenge of a transmitter that only knows the statistical channel state information (CSI) of the users. To this end, the paper investigates the problem of stochastic coordinated beamforming (SCB) optimization to maximize the ergodic sum-rate (ESR) in the network. Furthermore, we propose a scalable and robust RS scheme where the number of the common streams to be decoded at each user scales linearly with the number of users, and the common stream selection only depends on the statistical CSI. The setup leads to a challenging stochastic and non-convex optimization problem. A sample average approximation (SAA) and weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) based algorithm is adopted to tackle the intractable stochastic non-convex optimization and guarantee convergence to a stationary point asymptotically. The numerical simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed RS strategy and show a gain up to 27% in the achievable ESR compared with state-of-the-art schemes, namely treating interference as noise (TIN) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. The visible light communication (VLC) can provide data transmission via the illumination light emitting diodes (LED). This paper introduces a new model to analyze the bit error rate (BER) of binary phase modulation in VLC for an arbitrary modulation depth and data duty cycle while taking into account both the Gaussian and signal-dependent shot noise. The impact of the driver design on the BER and its impact on ripple have not been considered in detail before. We compare two different LED driver schemes, namely directly adapting the driver control loop and binary shunting. We address data rate, BER, and power efficiency, for which we propose to use the extra energy per symbol above unmodulated light. We further introduce an analysis of the effect that (truncated) ripple interference has in the (matched or other) filter of the receiver. Ripple causes a harmful interference in VLC, and thus a BER expression is derived to include its effect. Two approximations are proposed to model the ripple interference, and their accuracies are compared by simulations. This paper presents a part of our ground-breaking work on evaluation of buildings in terms of wireless friendliness at the building-design stage. The main goal is to devise building design practices that provide for a good performance of wireless networks deployed in buildings. In this paper, the interference gain (IG) and power gain (PG) are defined as two figures of merit (FoM) of the wireless performance of buildings. The FoMs bridge the gap between building design and wireless communications industries. An approach to derive exact closed-form equations for these FoMs is proposed for the first time. The derived analytic expressions facilitate straightforward and more computationally efficient numerical evaluation of the proposed FoMs as compared to Monte Carlo simulations for well-known indoor propagation models. It is shown that the derived closed-form expression can be readily employed to evaluate the impact of building properties, such as the sizes and the aspect ratios (ARs) of rooms, on the wireless performance. The cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CFmMIMO) aims to provide uniform quality of service (QoS) for all users, and can be used in small-area scenarios such as indoor industrial networks. This paper studies the CFmMIMO system for indoor industrial scenarios. Firstly, an access point (AP) grouping based hierarchical network topology is proposed. Based on this, we propose an effective AP selection method. To reduce pilot contamination, a pilot assignment scheme based on inspection robot (IR) location is proposed. Considering the high reliability requirement of industrial data transmission, the power control and backhaul combining are jointly optimized to maximize the minimum signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). The scalability of the proposed CFmMIMO system is analyzed, and a scalable power control method is proposed. The simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the AP selection method, pilot assignment scheme, and the joint optimization algorithm for power control and backhaul combining. This paper investigates different precoding strategies for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in the downlink of multi-cell visible light communication (VLC) networks. Since classical Shannon capacity formula does not hold for VLC, we first provide a lower bound on the channel capacity for RSMA in such interfering networks. Then, we formulate a spectral efficiency maximization problem to jointly find the optimal rate-splitting and transmit precoding. Beside that, since cell-edge users suffer from additional inter-cell interference, we propose to design the precoders of different RSMA signals utilizing coordinated beamforming (CB). Subsequently, aiming to improve the performance of the CB design for RSMA, while maintain a reduced complexity, we introduce two enhanced precoding strategies for RSMA. To the best of the authors’ knowledge such a contribution has not been considered before in the open literature. It is shown in the paper that the formulated optimization problem is non-convex and a sub-optimal, yet, a low complexity solution can be obtained efficiently using semi-definite relaxation combined with successive convex approximation. Through analytical results, we illustrate the flexibility and superiority of the proposed precoding strategies for RSMA over conventional coordinated space division multiple access and non-orthogonal multiple access for different scenarios and network loads. This paper studies the capacity of the two-user intensity-modulation/direct-detection (IM/DD) interference channel (IC), which is relevant in the context of multi-user optical wireless communications. Despite some known single-letter capacity characterizations for general discrete-memoryless ICs, a computable capacity expression for the IM/DD IC is missing. In this paper, we provide tight and easily computable inner and outer bounds for a general two-user IM/DD IC under peak and average optical intensity constraints. The bounds enable characterizing the asymptotic sum-rate capacity in the strong and weak interference regimes, as well as the generalized degrees of freedom (GDoF) in the symmetric case. Using the obtained bounds, the GDoF of the IM/DD IC is shown to have a ‘W’ shape similar to the Gaussian IC with power constraints. The obtained bounds are also evaluated numerically in different interference regimes to show their tightness, and used to study the performance of on-chip and indoor OWC systems. Geographic routing protocols greatly reduce the requirements of topology storage and provide flexibility in the accommodation of the dynamic behavior of mobile ad hoc networks. This paper presents performance evaluations and comparisons of two geographic routing protocols and the popular AODV protocol. The tradeoffs among the average path reliabilities, average conditional delays, average conditional numbers of hops, and area spectral efficiencies and the effects of various parameters are illustrated for finite ad hoc networks with randomly placed mobiles. This paper uses a dual method of closed-form analysis and simple simulation that is applicable to most routing protocols and provides a much more realistic performance evaluation than has previously been possible. The millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency band is seen as a key enabler of multigigabit wireless access in future cellular networks. In order to overcome the propagation challenges, mmWave systems use a large number of antenna elements both at the base station and at the user equipment, which leads to high directivity gains, fully directional communications, and possible noise-limited operations. The fundamental differences between mmWave networks and traditional ones challenge the classical design constraints, objectives, and available degrees of freedom. This paper addresses the implications that highly directional communication has on the design of an efficient medium access control (MAC) layer. In this paper, the role of feedback in two-way full-duplex Gaussian channel (TW-FD-GC) is revisited. First, we propose a practical coding scheme for the TW-FD-GC, which is based on the noisy type of the well-known Schalkwijk-Kailath (SK) feedback scheme. We show that though this scheme cannot achieve the capacity of the TW-FD-GC, the codeword length that achieves desired decoding error probability is extremely short. Then, we further prove that the proposed scheme is secure by itself, i.e., the achievable rate region of the proposed scheme is also an achievable secrecy rate region of the two-way full-duplex Gaussian wiretap channel (TW-FD-GWTC). In addition, for the TW-FD-GWTC, numerical result shows that the secrecy sum rate of our proposed scheme can be as large as those achieved by existing schemes in the literature for some cases. Next, we extend the proposed scheme to the TW-FD-GC with Gaussian state interference non-causally known by the corresponding transmitter. We show that the interference can be perfectly canceled by this extended scheme. Finally, we prove that this extended scheme is also secure by itself, and numerical result shows that this extended scheme may perform better than the existing ones in the literature. Symbol-level precoding (SLP), which converts the harmful multi-user interference (MUI) into beneficial signals, can significantly improve symbol-error-rate (SER) performance in multi-user communication systems. While enjoying symbolic gain, however, the complicated non-linear symbol-by-symbol precoder design suffers high computational complexity exponential with the number of users, which is unaffordable in realistic systems. In this paper, we propose a novel low-complexity grouped SLP (G-SLP) approach and develop efficient design algorithms for typical max-min fairness and power minimization problems. In particular, after dividing all users into several groups, the precoders for each group are separately designed on a symbol-by-symbol basis by only utilizing the symbol information of the users in that group, in which the intra-group MUI is exploited using the concept of constructive interference (CI) and the inter-group MUI is also effectively suppressed. In order to further reduce the computational complexity, we utilize the Lagrangian dual, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and the majorization-minimization (MM) method to transform the resulting problems into more tractable forms, and develop efficient algorithms for obtaining closed-form solutions to them. Extensive simulation results illustrate that the proposed G-SLP strategy and design algorithms dramatically reduce the computational complexity without causing significant performance loss compared with the traditional SLP schemes. In this paper, we consider an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-assisted cognitive radio system and maximize the secondary user (SU) rate by jointly optimizing the transmit power of secondary transmitter (ST) and the IRS’s reflect beamforming, subject to the constraints of the minimum required signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at the primary receiver, the ST’s maximum transmit power, and the unit modulus of the IRS reflect beamforming vector. This joint optimization problem can be solved suboptimally by the non-convex optimization techniques, which however usually require complicated mathematical transformations and are computationally intensive. To address this challenge, we propose an algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method. To achieve a higher learning efficiency and a lower reward variance, we propose another algorithm based on the soft actor-critic (SAC) method. In these proposed algorithms, a reward impact adjustment approach is proposed to improve their learning efficiency and stability. Simulation results show that the two proposed algorithms can achieve comparable SU rate performance with much shorter running time, as compared to the existing non-convex optimization-based benchmark algorithm, and that the proposed SAC-based algorithm learns faster and achieves a higher average reward with lower variance, as compared to the proposed DDPG-based algorithm. In this paper, we propose an interference alignment (IA) scheme for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) uplink cellular network with the help of a relay which operates in half-duplex mode. The proposed scheme only requires global channel state information (CSI) knowledge at the relay, with no transmitter beamforming and time extension at the user equipment (UE), which differs from conventional IA schemes for cellular networks. We derive the feasibility condition of the proposed scheme for the general cellular network configuration and analyze the degrees-of-freedom (DoF) performance of the proposed IA scheme while providing a closed-form beamformer design at the relay. Extensions of the proposed scheme to downlink and full-duplex cellular networks are also proposed in this paper. The DoF performance of the proposed scheme is compared to those of linear IA scheme and relay-aided interference management scheme for a cellular network with no time extension. It is also shown that advantages similar to those in the uplink case can be obtained for the downlink case through the duality of a relay-aided interfering multiple-access channel (IMAC) and an interfering broadcast channel (IBC). Motivated by the idea of “transmitting energy and information simultaneously,” we investigate, in this paper, the impact of constraints on the amount of energy that individual symbols carry, i.e., minimum amplitude constraints. We consider a Gaussian mixture noise channel with both minimum and peak amplitude constraints. First, we prove that the capacity-achieving input has a discrete distribution with a finite number of probability mass points. Then, we further investigate the number and positions of the probability mass points for the capacity-achieving input. Specifically, when the interference is constant and known at both the transmitter and the receiver, it can be totally eliminated so that the channel operates like an AWGN channel. In this case, we give a theorem to determine whether the optimal input is binary. Resistive memory is a promising technology for achieving unprecedented storage densities and new in-memory computing features. However, to fulfill their promise, resistive memories require array architectures suffering from a severe interference effect called “sneak paths.” In this paper, we address the sneak-path problem through a communication-theory framework. Starting from the fundamental problem of readout with parallel-resistance interference, we develop several tools for detection and coding that significantly improve memory reliability. For the detection problem, we formulate and derive the optimal detector for a realistic array model, and then propose simplifications that enjoy similarly good performance and simpler implementation. Complementing detection for better error rates is done by a new coding scheme that shapes the stored bits to get lower sneak-path incidence. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) bands will play an important role in 5G wireless systems. The system performance can be assessed by using models from stochastic geometry that cater for the directivity in the desired signal transmissions as well as the interference, and by calculating the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio ($\mathsf {SINR}$) coverage. Nonetheless, the accuracy of the existing coverage expressions derived through stochastic geometry may be questioned, as it is not clear whether they would capture the impact of the detailed mmWave channel and antenna features. In this paper, we propose an $\mathsf {SINR}$ coverage analysis framework that includes realistic channel model and antenna element radiation patterns. We introduce and estimate two parameters, aligned gain and misaligned gain, associated with the desired signal beam and the interfering signal beam, respectively. The distributions of these gains are used to determine the distribution of the $\mathsf {SINR}$ which is compared with the corresponding $\mathsf {SINR}$ coverage, calculated through the system-level simulations. The results show that both aligned and misaligned gains can be modeled as exponential-logarithmically distributed random variables with the highest accuracy, and can further be approximated as exponentially distributed random variables with reasonable accuracy. Spectrum access and interference management are amongst the most challenging issues in device-to-device (D2D) cellular networks. In order to address these issues, this paper introduces spatial spectrum sensing (SSS) for D2D cellular networks to facilitate cellular spectrum sharing by D2D users while providing a quality of service guarantee for cellular users. In order to assess the performance of the proposed scheme, we adopt a stochastic geometry approach in which the locations of base stations and D2D devices are modeled as independent Poisson point processes (PPPs). Assuming that the locations of the active cellular transmitters form another independent PPP, we characterize the area spectral efficiency of D2D networks under cellular users’ outage probability constraint. The use of SSS prohibits D2D transmissions around the active cellular users because of which the locations of the active D2D transmitters are modeled as a Poisson hole process driven by the PPP of active cellular user locations. Our analysis carefully accounts for this spatial separation between active cellular users and active D2D devices. This paper investigates the joint user scheduling (US) and user association (UA) problem for OFDMA-based networks under the centralized radio access network (C-RAN) architecture. We first formulate the joint optimization problem for US and UA, which is intractable in its exact form, and therefore, we propose a corresponding upper bound problem, with much lower computational complexity, with the help of a novel continuous rate function. We show that the upper bound problem can be further converted into an equivalent convex optimization problem via geometric programming (GP) that can be solved with inter-baseband unit coordination, which is viable in the C-RAN architecture. Furthermore, we show that the solutions of the convex upper bound problem can be mapped into the solution space of the original joint US and UA problem with a small gap. As a practically implementable solution to the original problem, a heuristic-based scheduler has been developed to obtain quasi-optimal UA and US solutions for the uplink (UL) as well as the downlink (DL) transmissions. Massive multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) systems can suffer from coherent intercell interference due to the phenomenon of pilot contamination. This paper investigates a two-layer decoding method that mitigates both coherent and non-coherent interference in multi-cell Massive MIMO. To this end, each base station (BS) first estimates the channels to intra-cell users using either minimum mean-squared error (MMSE) or element-wise MMSE estimation based on uplink pilots. The estimates are used for local decoding on each BS followed by a second decoding layer where the BSs cooperate to mitigate inter-cell interference. An uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) expression is computed for arbitrary two-layer decoding schemes. A closed form expression is then obtained for correlated Rayleigh fading, maximum-ratio combining, and the proposed large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) in the second layer. We also formulate a sum SE maximization problem with both the data power and LSFD vectors as optimization variables. Since this is an NP-hard problem, we develop a low-complexity algorithm based on the weighted MMSE approach to obtain a local optimum. This paper investigates the fundamental issues of mode selection and spectrum partition in cellular networks with in-band device-to-device (D2D) communication from the physical-layer security (PLS) perspective. We consider a mode selection scheme allowing each D2D pair to probabilistically switch between the underlay and overlay modes, and also a spectrum partition scheme where the system spectrum is orthogonally partitioned between cellular and overlay D2D communications. We first develop a general theoretical framework to model the secrecy outage and secrecy capacity performance of cellular users as well as the outage and capacity performance of D2D pairs. Optimization problems are also solved to identify the optimal mode selection and spectrum partition for secrecy capacity maximization and secrecy outage probability minimization. A case study is then provided to demonstrate the application of our theoretical framework for performance modeling and optimization, and also to illustrate the impacts of mode selection and spectrum partition on the PLS performances of in-band D2D communications. This paper analyzes the reliability and throughput of the telegram-splitting concept in the presence of inter-system and intra-system interference. Using telegram splitting, the data of one telegram is split into multiple sub-packets, which are then transmitted with temporal spacing. As a result, collisions with other telegrams destroy only some sub-packets that can be recovered using forward error correction. Consequently, the reliability of the data transmission in case of inter- and intra-system interference—a significant problem in license-exempt bands—is highly improved. In this paper, probabilities for the resulting telegram error rate of random media access systems using telegram splitting are derived. Furthermore, the achievable throughput is analyzed. The integration of local device-to-device (D2D) communications and cellular connections has been intensively studied to satisfy co-existing D2D and cellular communication demand. In future cellular networks, there will be numerous standby users possessing D2D communication capabilities in close proximity to each other. Considering that these standby users do not necessarily request D2D communications all the time, in this paper we propose a hybrid D2D-cellular scheme to make use of these standby users and to improve the rate performance for cellular users. More specifically, through D2D links, a virtual antenna array can be formed by sharing antennas across different terminals to realize the diversity gain of MIMO channels. This paper considers the use of millimeter wave links to enable high data rate D2D communications. We then design an orthogonal D2D multiple access protocol and formulate the optimization problem of joint cellular and D2D resource allocation for downlink transmissions using the proposed scheme. We obtain a closed-form solution for D2D resource allocation, which reveals useful insights for practical system design. Hardware calibration is essential to restore the uplink/downlink channel reciprocity for multi-user massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in a time division duplexing mode. Unfortunately, due to the associated overhead, calibration cannot be performed frequently; furthermore, any calibration procedure leaves behind a residual mismatch between the uplink and downlink channels. In this paper, we study the effects of these calibration errors on the achievable rates in the downlink of a multi-cell, multi-user, and distributed massive MIMO system. Specifically, we develop accurate, yet simple, lower-bounds on the per-user achievable rate, assuming either zero-forcing (ZF) or matched filtering (MF) are used. We also introduce a performance loss coefficient as a measure of sensitivity of the performance to the calibration errors. Using this measure, we identify the conditions under which ZF precoding is more sensitive to calibration errors than MF. Finally, we consider the robust weighted sum-rate maximization problem to mitigate the degrading effects of non-ideal calibration. Our numerical experiments show that the rate lower-bounds developed in this paper accurately quantify the impacts of non-ideal calibration on performance. This paper investigates a new beamforming approach for interference exploitation, which has recently attracted interest as an alternative to conventional interference-avoidance beamforming for the downlink of multiple-input multiple-output systems. Contrary to existing interference exploitation approaches that focus on signal-to-noise ratio performance, we adopt an approach based on the detection region of the signal constellation. Focusing on quality of service, we then formulate the optimization for minimizing the error probability (EP) for the worst user, subject to power constraints. We do this by employing the knowledge of channel state information at the transmitter, along with all downlink users’ data that are readily available at the base station during downlink transmission. In this context, we also show that the detection-region-based beamforming and the worst user EP downlink beamforming are equivalent problems. Finally, we further propose a sum EPs approach and provide an analytic bound of average symbol error rate performance. This paper considers the problem of analytically assessing the maximum achievable rates (capacity) of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions when the receiver, for complexity reasons, only accounts for the common phase error (CPE) effect due to phase noise impairments with inter-carrier interference (ICI) treated as noise. By recognizing that the functional form of the CPE with respect to the phase noise realization is actually a free design parameter, determination of the capacity is posed as a functional optimization problem with respect to the, so-called, CPE function. A simple lower bound of the capacity is obtained, revealing the performance degradation due to the unknown CPE at the receiver, as well as the suboptimal performance achieved in severe phase noise conditions by the conventional CPE function that is routinely employed in previous works. The existence of an optimal number of subcarriers that balances the effects of the (unknown) CPE and ICI is highlighted and critical system design/operation issues, such as selection of the CPE function and effect of unknown channel on the achievable rate, are discussed. The analysis in this paper can be employed for determining the suitability of OFDM in phase noise channels and provides a tractable utility function for resource allocation purposes. In this paper, a delay diversity orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (DD OFDM) transmission scheme in amplify-and-forward (AF) full-duplex relay systems is investigated. One direct source-to-destination link, one relay forwarding link, and residual self-interference are considered in the system. The necessary cyclic prefix length is investigated and a suitable AF relay protocol in the full-duplex relay OFDM system is proposed. This paper demonstrates that the AF relay link and the direct source-to-destination link can be combined to provide spatial diversity. The key is that the DD OFDM scheme is used to transform the spatial diversity into increased channel frequency diversity that is further exploited by using the bit-interleaved coding. This paper investigates a cache-aided cloud radio access network (C-RAN), comprising a central unit, $K$ base stations (BSs) each with $N_{T}$ antennas, and $M$ users each with $N_{R}$ antennas, where each BS and user have local caches to store some popular contents from the central unit. For this cache-aided network, we propose the linear network coded (NC) wireless caching that consists of linear wireless network coding assisted cache placement phase and signal-space alignment (SSA) enabled content delivery phase. In the cache placement phase, we design a joint NC caching function at the BSs to store linear combinations of messages from the central unit, as a form of linear wireless network coding. In the content delivery phase, we design the SSA pattern based on the NC caching to guide the precoding designs at BSs. Then, each user can reliably decode its requested messages by receiver shaping and reverse NC operation. The primary contribution of this work is to achieve the coding gain induced by the integration of linear wireless network coding and SSA, which has been not exploited in the field of wireless coded caching. In particular, to deal with high temporal variability of user requests, we show that the proposed cache placement is invariant to different user requests in the worst-case caching, without any shared caching messages at different BSs. Furthermore, we verify that the proposed scheme is also compatible with the insufficient caching scenario at the BSs. In addition, we analyze the achievable sum degrees of freedom (DoF) for the proposed caching network. This paper investigates the first resource management problem for vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) networks under the in-band full-duplex (IBFD) backhauling scheme with guaranteed ultra-reliable and low-latency (URLLC) service. The considered networks suffers from interference caused by three node transmission in IBFD scheme and the mobility of vehicular user equipments (VUEs). The resource allocation problem is formulated to jointly optimize VUE association, resource block assignment (RA) and power allocation (PA), while satisfying the reliability and latency constraints at the same time. The formulated problem is a mixed integer non-linear problem with non-convex objective function and constraints. Finding globally optimal solution for this type of problem is still an open problem. To develop tractable solutions, the original problem is firstly simplified using derived equivalent expression for the objective function. The proposed method then decomposed it into RA and PA sub-problems. In each iteration, the PA sub-problem is solved for a set of given PA solution; while the solution for PA sub-problem is searched under determined RA results. The RA and PA sub-problems are solved iteratively until the converging condition is achieved. Theoretical analysis proves that the proposed method achieves Nash-stable equilibrium and local optimality for RA and PA sub-problems respectively. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the derived performance analysis and demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art algorithms in the literatures. In this paper, we consider the problem of joint beam selection and link activation across a set of communication pairs to effectively control the interference between communication pairs via inactivating part communication pairs in ultra-dense device-to-device (D2D) mmWave communication networks. The resulting optimization problem is formulated as an integer programming problem that is nonconvex and NP-hard. Consequently, the global optimal solution, even the local optimal solution, cannot be generally obtained. To overcome this challenge, this paper resorts to design a deep learning architecture based on graph neural network to finish the joint beam selection and link activation, with taking the network topology information into account. Meanwhile, we present an unsupervised Lagrangian dual learning framework to train the parameters of the GBLinks model. Numerical results show that the proposed GBLinks model can converge to a stable point with the number of iterations increases, in terms of the weighted sum rate. Furthermore, the GBLinks model can reach near-optimal solutions through comparing with the exhaustive scheme in small-scale ultra-dense D2D mmWave communication networks and outperforms GreedyNoSched and the SCA-based method.
