In this paper, a new modulation strategy based on the carrier-based switching strategy for the non-square direct matrix converters (MC) is proposed to control the active power of distributed generation (DG) units. In this strategy, the active power of DGs is controlled by the central input current control of the non-square direct MC independent from the voltage and frequency. Conventionally, each DG has a converter, and for supplying a load with N number of DGs, N number of converters are needed and each converter has its own modulation switching and control strategy to control the power output of each DG. Needless to say, in a microgrid with N number of DGs, the control strategy of each converter has more complex structure than that of a microgrid with one converter, and surely the former strategy entails more volume and price. Using the proposed converter in this paper, it is possible to supply a load with N number of DGs through one converter. Also, the power outputs of all DGs are controlled by a central control strategy. The proposed central control strategy is described and simulated for a typical microgrid. Experimental and simulation results validate the effectiveness of the proposed converter and the proposed strategy. In renewable energy micro-source applications, a wide range of voltage conversion of the step-up converter is an essential part to equalize the typical low voltage of micro-source with DC-bus voltage of Inverter or motor drives. In order to meet this purpose, an ultra-voltage gain step-up DC-DC converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter has made an arrangement of the regenerative-boost fed switched inductor and capacitor configurations. Thereby, due to such an organization of structure, the proposed converter can develop an extremely high voltage-gain even at lower duty ratios. In addition, it has the advantage of lower switching stress across all power semi-conductive diodes. Furthermore, this paper describes the steady-state analysis and comparative features of the converter with existing recent literature. Finally, to validate theoretical analysis and test the feasibility and suitability of the proposed ultra-gain converter, the experimental results were observed by a 500 W fabricated prototype. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are widely used in street lighting, landscape lighting, liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighting, healthcare, etc. As an important part of LED lighting products, LED driver plays a vital role in maintenance costs reduction, energy saving and lifetime prolongation. In this paper, a single-stage LED driver is proposed, which is integrated by a totem-pole bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) unit and several modular LCL-T resonant rectifiers. The totem-pole bridgeless PFC unit and the LCL-T resonant rectifiers are integrated by sharing switches, which can simplify the circuit and reduce the system cost. The output current can be regulated by applying the variable inductor control. Constant duty cycle and fixed switching frequency operation can be achieved as well. The operating principle and the performance of the proposed converter are analyzed in this paper. In addition, a precise parameter design method is proposed by considering the high-order harmonics. Multiphase drives with fault-tolerant capability are favored in high-reliability applications. In most fault-tolerant multiphase drives, the fault types and locations must be known prior to the fault-tolerant control. Therefore, fault diagnosis is an indispensable procedure. This paper proposes a generalized method to detect and identify the open-circuit faults (including open-switch and open-phase faults) in star-connected symmetrical multiphase drives with different phase numbers. The selected fault diagnosis signals are calculated solely from simple arithmetical operations of measured phase currents, resulting in easy real-time implementation. As fault detection signals are derived from the physical constraint imposed by the neutral point, the proposed method is naturally robust and not sensitive to operating points, machine transients and harmonics in stator currents. Therefore, a relatively small fault detection threshold can be used and fast detection can also be achieved. After the fault has been detected, the fault type is further identified according to the polarity of the integration of phase currents. The paper develops two computationally efficient models, namely a detailed equivalent model and an average-value model, with provisions for representation of the critical state of converter blocking, for modular multilevel converters with embedded storage. These models are indispensable in the simulation of dc faults. The developed detailed equivalent model provides accuracy that matches electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations, with much reduced computational burden; the developed average-value model represents the averaged behavior of the converter by neglecting switching transients. Both models are extensively evaluated in the context of an HVDC system against benchmark results form a detailed switching model developed in PSCAD/EMTDC. The results confirm the validity and accuracy of the models for steady state, transient, and faulted operating conditions including when the converter is blocked in response to a dc fault. The conventional model predictive power control suffers from heavy computational burden and large power ripple. To address the problem, this paper proposes a simplified three-vector-based model predictive direct power control, which can greatly optimize the control set. Firstly, a switching table is designed to exclude the redundant virtual voltage vectors (VVs). Only half of the candidate VVs are retained. Then, the effect of each VV on power is analyzed in detail. The deviation of reactive power is used as the evidence to further simplify the control set. In this way, the prediction behavior is reduced from 12 to 2, which effectively reduces the computational burden. In addition, the concept of power deadbeat is employed to determine the duty cycles of the two virtual VVs and one zero VV. Thus, the power ripples and current harmonics can be considerably suppressed. With this proposed method, the calculation complexity is reduced, and the steady-state performance is improved. In this paper, a finite-control-set model predictive direct torque control (FCS-MPDTC) method is proposed to reduce the torque ripple of a segmented switched reluctance motor (SSRM) at the low-speed stage. Firstly, the prediction dynamic model is established, and the phase torque can be predicted by detecting phase current and rotor position signals. Then, the principle of power converter and selection of voltage vectors are introduced and presented. Considering torque ripple reduction, flux tracking performance and copper losses reduction, the cost function with phase torque, the amplitude of flux linkage and phase current, is established to select optimal voltage vector to control the power converter. In addition, the torque sharing function (TSF) is employed to distribute total torque to phase torque for further torque ripple reduction. Finally, the direct torque control (DTC) is selected as the comparison method, performance of MPDTC is verified by simulation and experiment results. In this paper, a circulating-current-excited switched reluctance generator system with the diode rectifier is comparatively studied with a field-current-separated switched reluctance generator. By using a DC power source connected in series with the winding to provide the circulating current, a controllable excitation field is established in the proposed generator. To highlight the influence of this DC voltage source, the injected field current of the field-current-separated generator is kept the same as the circulating current of the circulating-current-excited generator. Then, both advantages and disadvantages of the generators are summarized. The circulating-current-excited switched reluctance generator system inherits both the advantages of good reliability of the separated-winding generator by using the diode rectifier and low copper loss of the integrated-winding machine by combining the AC and DC current in one set of windings. Furthermore, two more practically conventional field-current-separated generators are also compared with the proposed generator in terms of the external characteristics. An improved two-stage model predictive current control (MPCC) for three-phase three-level converters in the paper, which can simultaneously achieve common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction, effective dc-link capacitor voltage control, and decreased computational burden, is proposed. Compared to the other current control strategies, it has the capability of handling multiple control objectives and possesses a simple structure. Furthermore, it greatly reduces the CMV since the peak CMVs of all the candidate voltage vectors are constrained to be less than one sixth of the dc-link voltage. In addition, an optimal two-stage voltage vector selection mechanism is employed in the proposed method. It helps to significantly reduce the computational complexity. This paper presents Space Vector Modulation (SVM) sequences that reduce Common Mode Voltage (CMV) in Dual Three-phase Asymmetrical Induction Motor (DTAIM). At first, two existing SVM techniques such as Reference SVM (RSVM) and CMV1 are studied. Additionally, three new switching sequences are developed as CMV2, CMV3 and DCMV3, which reduce peak magnitude of CMV by 66.8% in comparison with RSVM technique. In SVM techniques, to obtain least CMV, zero vectors are usually replaced by two opposite large Active voltage Vectors (AV) with equal time duration. In such topologies like CMV1, total six AVs are utilized to synthesize the reference vector. The proposed SVM technique CMV2 utilizes only five large AVs to synthesize the reference vector and reduces CMV. Selection of five neighbouring AVs is reflected in reduction of harmonic flux trajectories and stator current ripple in proposed techniques. Additionally, two more switching sequences (CMV3 and DCMV3) are developed related to utilization of specific zero voltage vectors in all sectors (7 and 56) that produce zero CMV. These two switching sequences also provide easy implementation feature during the development of c-code program. In this study, CMV and stator current ripple are considered as performance parameters for different SVM techniques. This paper presents a different Finite Control Set – Model Predictive Control (FCS-MPC) for grid-connected three-phase bidirectional power inverters. These are typically used in dc or ac renewable-based microgrids (MGs), where bidirectional operation and fast dynamic response is required. The bidirectional grid-connected inverters are an essential part of MG, which inject energy into the ac grid or demand energy from it. The dynamic behavior of the system is a major concern since the current can suddenly change depending on the hierarchical controller. This paper proposes a different cost function using sliding mode theory, which offers a good dynamic response, reduced computational burden, and a parameter-free control model. The operation principle of the proposed controller is given and evaluated using a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) system, but also experimentally with a 1kW laboratory prototype. The final results demonstrate the advantages of using this approach in grid-connected three-phase bidirectional power inverters in terms of dynamic response and reduced computational burden, making this solution technically attractive and viable. The digital implementation of all the control loops of a versatile buck-boost (VBB) dc–dc converter used in a stand-alone photovoltaic application is proposed in this paper to improve existing digital-analog sliding-mode-based implementations. All three control loops: maximum power point tracking (MPPT), fast input voltage regulation, and inner high-bandwidth current control, have been programmed in the same digital signal controller (DSC). A Model Predictive Control (MPC) based algorithm has satisfactorily solved the challenge of implementing the nominal 100 kHz switching frequency current loop. The MPC cost function is distributed throughout the algorithm to achieve three specific goals: the tracking of the reference current (G1), a quasi-constant steady-state switching frequency (G2), and the assurance that the duration of an interval is larger than the time required to calculate it (G3). The third goal requires the current control to toggle between peak- and valley-modes depending on the operating point. The correct fulfillment of these control objectives on the proposed MPC-based algorithm has been validated through simulations and experimental tests performed on a purpose built-prototype. In this paper, a fault-tolerant control of a symmetrical six-phase induction generator based on a variable structure strategy is experimentally tested and compared with a classical proportional-integral controller. For this, we use a linear feedback sliding mode controller with switched feedback gains in such a way to control the inner current loops of this machine. One main drawback of the classical three-phase induction generator is that it is no longer possible to generate electrical power if only one phase is lost on the stator side. To overcome this issue, we will use a squirrel cage six-phase induction machine that can still operate when at least three phases remain on the stator side. This article proposes to use a variable structure control in order to cope with unbalanced currents and also maintain the generation of power when a loss of the stator's phases occurs. The proposed controller shows its robustness and good regulation performance in healthy and faulty modes. In this paper a control method for a matrix converter (MC) based on the heterodyne concept from the communication field is presented. The method is used to convert the high frequency of a microturbine generator’s (MTG) output voltage to the utility grid’s frequency. In this control method a frequency modulation (FM) of the MC’s switching frequency is achieved using a DQ0 analysis of the converter’s filtered output voltage with the utility grid’s frequency as a reference. After filtration, the MC achieves a conversion to the reference frequency with a minimal total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output voltage while using a low switching frequency. In addition, the proposed method decouples the output frequency, phase angle and voltage amplitude, which allows them to be controlled separately. This significantly simplifies the required control, and enables a robust and low-cost design. The theoretical analysis, simulation and experimental results of the method are reported. Differential power processing (DPP) converters have been developed for photovoltaic (PV) panels to preclude energy yield reduction due to partial shading. In large-scale PV systems comprising numerous series-connected panels, DPP converters with good modularity are preferable because the number of series-connected panels varies depending on applications. This paper proposes a switched capacitor converter (SCC)-based modular DPP architecture for large-scale PV systems. Four panels are grouped as a module, each having a panel-level DPP converter, and modules are connected in series to form a string. The design of the panel-level DPP converter is fixed while the system can be arbitrarily extended by stacking modules, achieving good modularity. Adjacent panel-level DPP converters are dc-coupled, by which modules can be connected using long cables, mitigating installation limitations. This paper presents a sigma-modified adaptive control algorithm to enhance the charging profile in a multi-objective electric vehicle (EV) charging installation. The present algorithm takes care of multiple parametric uncertainties and grid non-idealities to provide an instantaneous control updation in order to achieve well-regulated charging dynamics. With the support of renewable energy and battery energy storage (BES), the present algorithm also ensures an uninterrupted charging profile with controller robustness and stability for bi-directional EV charging. The sigma-mod adaptive controller provides an iterative error convergence at each clock interval of supply voltage dynamics to guarantee improved power quality operation in presence of grid distortions. To further improve the reliability of EV charging opportunities, a solar photovoltaic (PV) array in conjunction with the battery energy storage supports the ancillary services through maximum power point operation. Multivariable sliding mode control and rule-based phase-shift adaptation at different stages of power transformation assure faster convergence, parameter uncertainty and controller stability for the bi-directional EV charging operation. A 3.3 kW PV-integrated off-board charging facility is designed and developed as a laboratory prototype to validate the multi-mode charging architecture with minimal grid dependency. This paper proposes a novel dual input nine-level inverter (DINLI) topology which requires only seven controllable devices. The dual inputs are un-identical DC voltage sources in the ratio 1:3. A simple control scheme is derived by appropriately modifying the phase disposition pulse width modulation technique to generate high-quality 9-level output from the DINLI topology. At any given instant, a maximum of four switches conduct out of which only a maximum of two switches operate at high frequency, bringing down the switching and conduction losses significantly and improving the overall system efficiency. The bidirectional DINLI (BDINLI) topology with reactive power capability can be realized by replacing the unidirectional devices with the controlled switches (i.e., total nine switches). In addition, the proposed DINLI topology does not require extra voltage balancing circuits which further improves the efficiency. The DINLI operation is verified through MATLAB simulations for grid-connected applications and its extension to an n-level, 3-phase application is also investigated. This paper presents a dual-hysteresis band control method for multi-drive systems based on a nine-switch inverter. The drive system contains two independent three-phase induction motors fed by a nine-switch inverter. Independent control of torque, speed, and stator current of two load stages is achieved. The proposed strategy offers a reliable control operation of both induction machines under individual load profiles. Instead of using independent sets of three-phase voltage source converters, the nine-switch inverter is used to drive separate machines. Thus, the volume and size of the power stage are noticeably reduced due to the use of fewer semiconductors. The theoretical concept and design steps of the proposed method are presented. Consistent distribution of shadows on the surface of the shaded PV array enhances the array’s harvested capacity. Therefore, in this paper, an Image processing inspired Chaos Map reconfiguration is proposed to mitigate the effect of shading. The proposed reconfiguration is aimed at achieving uniform row current when compared with the other conventional configurations with physical relocation of panels without changing the electrical connections. The efficacy of the proposed method is tested on Short Wide, Short Narrow, Long Wide and Long Narrow shading conditions on the basis of both software and hardware results. The proposed method enhanced output metrics under partially shaded conditions and gives most effective dispersion of shading over entire PV array. This proposed method is also compared with other existing static reconfiguration techniques for the above said shading conditions and the results show tremendous increment in output power under both hardware and software platforms. The results replicate that the proposed configuration can be generalized for any size of an SPV Array and output parameters can be enhanced by physical relocation under any sort of shading conditions. The main challenges for Finite Set-model Predictive Torque and Flux Control (MPTC) include huge calculation amount, large torque ripple, and the selection of weighting factor. To deal with these challenges and achieve the fastest torque response, a novel MPTC strategy with virtual voltage vector-based pattern is proposed in this paper. In each control period, a desired voltage vector is computed based on the maximum torque variation rate. The virtual desired voltage vector is combined by using basic voltage vectors with the minimum switching times. The switching pattern between two adjacent control periods is optimized by using a cost function in realtime. Compared with the traditional MPTC approach, the novel strategy has multifaceted improved performances: faster torque response, less calculation amount, lower switching frequency, reduced torque ripple, higher efficiency and no weighting factor. AC–DC line-commutated converters (LCCs) are widely utilized in existing and emerging ac–dc power systems. Analysis of such systems under balanced and unbalanced conditions is often carried out using electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation programs. Therein, the detailed switching models of LCCs are often the computational bottlenecks for system-level studies. Recently, the parametric average-value models (PAVMs) have been developed to achieve fast and efficient simulations of switching converters. In this paper, the PAVM methodology is extended to consider operation of LCCs under unbalanced conditions in the ac network. This is done in the extended PAVM by formulating the ac-side harmonics in positive and negative sequences as well as the dc-side harmonics (i.e., ripples) with respect to the ac network imbalance. The new PAVM is validated experimentally and by simulations, and is demonstrated to be accurate in reconstructing the ac and dc waveforms under unbalanced conditions in the ac network. This paper presents a new single-source three-phase seven-level inverter with an inherent three-time voltage boosting capability for medium-voltage applications. The proposed topology is comprised of series connection of two switched-capacitor (SC) networks with an added half-bridge module per phase. Each of such integrated SC networks requires a single capacitor associated with three active power switches. The three-time voltage boosting feature of the proposed topology can reduce the dc-link voltage requirements by 50% in comparison to the traditional neutral point clamped (NPC), flying capacitors, active NPC (ANPC), hybrid clamped ANPC, and cascaded H-bridge topologies, and 75% to advanced ANPC topologies. It can also reduce the number of required switches and capacitors as well as their voltage stresses compared to those state-of-the-art topologies reported in the literature. By integrating “n” number of added SC networks in the proposed seven-level basic topology, the number of output voltage levels can be extended to 2n+3 per phase. A finite control set model predictive control algorithm is also derived to control the converter in both the active and reactive power exchanges modes without distorting the generated grid current quality. The capacitor voltage balancing is inherent in the proposed topology, and thus, there is no need for any additional voltage balancing circuit, which further reduces the control complexity. With the development of power system electronization, distributed new energy generation-based DC microgrid system has become a hot spot of the current research. Aiming to implement the collection, transformation and transmission of the new energy sources, the dual active bridge (DAB) converter has become a key energy conversion device. Aiming to promote the transmitted efficiency for such DAB converter, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) optimization scheme with the triple-phase-shift (TPS) is proposed. Specifically, the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is used for solving optimal solutions with the minimum power losses. Then, the trained DDPG agent is used as a fast surrogate predictor, which giving the suitable control decisions under whole operation conditions. The main control objective is to minimize the power losses for getting the target maximum efficiency. Besides, the soft switching constrains are added to the DDPG algorithm. Based on this, the proposed optimized method can be used for different operation conditions with excellent performance. The operation principles, the loss analyses, and the training consideration and evaluation of the DDPG algorithm are given. Permanent magnetsynchronous motors (PMSMs) are usually driven by the SVPWM technique, which leads to annoying sideband noise near the switching frequency. Traditional random modulation techniques increase the possibility of resonance with the motor structure. This study proposes a novel random pulse position modulation-based strategy to eliminate the current harmonics and electromagnetic noise at a specific frequency. The proposed method adopts a constant switching frequency. A unique design between the pulse position and duty ratio cancels the current harmonics and acoustic noise at the selected frequency. The results show that resonance can be avoided effectively if the chosen frequency is close to the natural frequency. It is concluded that the proposed method is beneficial at lower fundamental frequencies. An accurate commutation for position estimation is the main challenge in brushless (BL) permanent magnet (PM) type direct current (DC) motor drive in motion sensorless mode. A rugged position sensorless control with an accurate rotational direction control-based algorithm is presented here for solar photovoltaic (PV) array fed submersible and surface mounted centrifugal and helical water pumping. In this method, an initial accurate rotational direction control along with starting current control is implemented. No current sensor is used for mechanical rotor position estimation to make the system cost effective as it is mainly designed for agricultural applications. The reliability and dynamic performance of the system are validated through both simulation and experimental results on a laboratory prototype and in industrial test facility using commercial prototype with low cost Delfino DSP processor. To further improve the reliability of the open-end winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (OW-PMSM) and avoid the secondary damage caused by the common-mode voltage (CMV) in the event of bridge-arm failure, a CMV suppression technique is proposed. With the proposed technique, the reference voltages in three-phase stationary coordinate system are optimized to adapt the characteristics of OW-PMSM with five bridge arms. Further, an improved modulation scheme is proposed, in which the CMV is suppressed and the switching actions within every control cycle is reduced. The intermittent nature of wind speed imposesa nonlinear behavior on the dynamics of the wind turbine. Consequently, relying on one linear controller tuned to a single specific operating point cannot guarantee a feasible performance in the whole operating region despite providing a fast solution. Besides, wind speed variations cause oscillations in the output power of the wind turbine. To tackle these issues, the Soft Switching Multiple Model Predictive Control (SSMMPC) technique is introduced in which the nonlinear dynamical model of the wind turbine is approximated by defining multiple linear models around various operating points. The gap metric is used as a mathematical tool to construct a bank of multiple linear models that results in a bank of linear controllers. By assuming a relatively small gap threshold value between the neighboring linear models, the soft switching is guaranteed. In this way, there will be no unexpected impulsive behavior in the control input during switching from one MPC to another. The closed loop system stability is studied using Lyapunov theory and a novel switching stability proof based on probabilities is provided. The SSMMPC performance is investigated and compared with a TSR-based controller and a bidirectional control method through simulations using the NREL 10 kW wind turbine model and experimental results on a 7.5 kW wind turbine drivetrain. The results corroborate the improvements that can be attained by using SSMMPC in terms of more captured energy, better maximum power point tracking quality, lower generator torque oscillations, and smoother output power curve.
