The study on the scattering mechanism of breaking ship waves provides important theoretical basis to the ship detection and radar imaging in a marine environment. This paper presents a new procedure for evaluating the electromagnetic scattering field of breaking ship waves over a perfect electric conductor sea surface. In this paper, different forms of the near-field ship waves are obtained by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, which provides a new means of analyzing a fully coupled fluid-structure interaction system in a detailed manner. Sufficient grids are used in the CFD numerical simulation to obtain the flow field information of the breaking waves. The accuracy of the breaking wave geometry has been improved obviously, which will lead to a better understanding of the electromagnetic scattering characteristics of breaking ship waves. Considering the multiple scattering between the ship hull and the breaking waves, the scattering field of the sea surface and the ship hull are evaluated by the forward–backward iterated physical optics algorithm. Both scattering characteristics of the breaking ship waves and distribution of the scattering coefficients are obtained. By comparing the bistatic scattering field in different situations, the numerical results show some important effects of the breaking ship waves, which are quite different from the effects of ship models. Synthetic aperture sonar and synthetic aperture radar involve the creation of high-resolution images of a scene via scattered signals recorded at different locations. Each pixel of the reconstructed image includes information obtained from multiple aspects due to the changing position of the sources/receivers. In this paper, the aspect-dependent scattering at each pixel is exploited to provide additional information about the scene; this paper presents a framework for converting and utilizing multiaspect data, as well as several examples. For sonar data, as is presented here, the aspect dependence may be leveraged to separate objects of interest from the background, to understand the local bathymetry, or for visualizing acoustic shadowing in full circular synthetic aperture sonar images. Several examples of images of the seafloor containing objects of interest are presented for both circular and linear apertures. In addition, the aspect dependence of low-frequency elastic scattering from objects may be used to understand the underlying scattering physics, which is of potential use in fields such as target recognition and nondestructive testing; a laboratory example is presented. Techniques for retrieving cloud optical properties, i.e., the optical depths and particle size distributions, using atmospheric "window" channels in the visible and near-infrared spectral regions are well established. For partially transparent thin cirrus clouds, these "window" channels receive solar radiances scattered by the surface and lower level water clouds. Accurate retrieval of optical properties of thin cirrus clouds requires proper modeling of the effects from the surface and the lower level water clouds. In this paper, we describe a new concept using two strong water vapor absorption channels near 138 and 1.88 μm, together with one window channel, for remote sensing of cirrus optical properties. Both the 138- and 1.88-μm channels are highly sensitive in detecting the upper level cirrus clouds. Both channels receive little scattered solar radiances from the surface and lower level water clouds because of the strong water vapor absorption below cirrus. The 1.88-μm channel is quite sensitive to changes in ice particle size distributions, while the 138-μm channel is less sensitive. These properties allow for simultaneous retrievals of optical depths and particle size distributions of cirrus clouds with minimal contaminations from the surface and lower level water clouds. Preliminary tests of this new concept are made using hyperspectral imaging data collected with the Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer. The addition of a channel near 1.88 μm to future multichannel meteorological satellite sensors would improve our ability in global remote sensing of cirrus optical properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Craters are among the most abundant features on the surface of many planets with great importance for planetary scientists. They reveal chronology information about planets and may be used for autonomous spacecraft navigation and landing. Although numerous research efforts have been carried out in the field of crater detection, existing crater detection algorithms (CDAs) are only helpful in a limited number of applications. A promising crater detection approach involves two main steps: 1) hypothesis generation (HG) and 2) hypothesis verification (HV). During HG, potential crater locations are detected. The validity of the hypothesized crater locations is then tested in a HV step. In this context, we discuss some commonly used algorithms for HG such as highlight-shadow region detection and Hough transform as well as our novel and enhanced algorithms based on interest point detection and convex grouping. A key objective of this paper is to analyze their performance while paying special attention to how they affect the accuracy of the verification step. To deal with different size craters, we focus on multiscale HG. For HV, we have chosen convolutional neural networks which have recently achieved state-of-the-art performance in many computer vision applications. Due to the variation of test sets in the literature, it is often challenging to compare the performance of different CDAs in a fair way. In this paper, we present a comprehensive performance evaluation and comparison of CDAs. Each algorithm has been trained/tested using common data sets generated by a systematic approach. In this paper, a new joint spectral–spatial subpixel mapping model is proposed for hyperspectral remotely sensed imagery. Conventional approaches generally use an intermediate step based on the derivation of fractional abundance maps obtained after a spectral unmixing process, and thus the rich spectral information contained in the original hyperspectral data set may not be utilized fully. In this paper, a concept of subpixel abundance map, which calculates the abundance fraction of each subpixel to belong to a given class, was introduced. This allows us to directly connect the original (coarser) hyperspectral image with the final subpixel result. Furthermore, the proposed approach incorporates the spectral information contained in the original hyperspectral imagery and the concept of spatial dependence to generate a final subpixel mapping result. The proposed approach has been experimentally evaluated using both synthetic and real hyperspectral images, and the obtained results demonstrate that the method achieves better results when compared to other seven subpixel mapping methods. The numerical comparisons are based on different indexes such as the overall accuracy and the CPU time. Moreover, the obtained results are statistically significant at 95% confidence. Beginning with 2013 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society has a new publication: the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine. The magazine provides a new venue to publish high quality technical articles that by their very nature do not find a home in journals requiring scientific innovation but that provide relevant information to scientists, engineers, end-users, and students who interact in different ways with the geoscience and remote sensing disciplines. The magazine will publish tutorial papers and technical papers on geoscience and remote sensing topics, as well as papers that describe relevant applications of and projects based on topics addressed by our society. This call for papers is to encourage all readers to prepare and submit articles and technical content for review to be published in the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine. Contributions for the above-mentioned columns of the magazine are also welcome. All technical papers will undergo blind review by multiple reviewers. Deep neural networks (DNNs), including convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and residual networks (ResNets) models, are able to learn abstract representations from the input data by considering a deep hierarchy of layers that perform advanced feature extraction. The combination of these models with visual attention techniques can assist with the identification of the most representative parts of the data from a visual standpoint, obtained through more detailed filtering of the features extracted by the operational layers of the network. This is of significant interest for analyzing remotely sensed hyperspectral images (HSIs), characterized by their very high spectral dimensionality. However, few efforts have been conducted in the literature in order to adapt visual attention methods to remotely sensed HSI data analysis. In this paper, we introduce a new visual attention-driven technique for the HSI classification. Specifically, we incorporate attention mechanisms to a ResNet in order to better characterize the spectral–spatial information contained in the data. Our newly proposed method calculates a mask that is applied to the features obtained by the network in order to identify the most desirable ones for classification purposes. Our experiments, conducted using four widely used HSI data sets, reveal that the proposed deep attention model provides competitive advantages in terms of classification accuracy when compared to other state-of-the-art methods. In this paper, we consider the development of algorithms for the automatic detection of buried threats using ground penetrating radar (GPR) measurements. GPR is one of the most studied and successful modalities for automatic buried threat detection (BTD), and a large variety of BTD algorithms have been proposed for it. Despite this, large-scale comparisons of GPR-based BTD algorithms are rare in the literature. In this paper, we report the results of a multi-institutional effort to develop advanced BTD algorithms for a real-world GPR BTD system. The effort involved five institutions with substantial experience with the development of GPR-based BTD algorithms. In this paper, we report the technical details of the advanced algorithms submitted by each institution, representing their latest technical advances, and many state-of-the-art GPR-based BTD algorithms. We also report the results of evaluating the algorithms from each institution on the large experimental data set used for development. The experimental data set comprised 120 000 m2 of GPR data using surface area, from 13 different lanes across two U.S. test sites. The data were collected using a vehicle-mounted GPR system, the variants of which have supplied data for numerous publications. Using these results, we identify the most successful and common processing strategies among the submitted algorithms, and make recommendations for GPR-based BTD algorithm design. This paper examines the polarized backscattering of spatially anisotropic rough surfaces. To better explore the physical mechanisms that control the azimuthal dependence of the backscattering from anisotropic surfaces, the effects of surface roughness [correlation length and root-mean-square (rms) height], dielectric constant, and radar parameters from anisotropic surfaces are studied. The advanced integral equation model (AIEM) is used to simulate both co- and cross-polarized backscattering coefficients, including the single and multiple scattering. Numerical results suggest that the multiple scattering exhibits a stronger azimuthal dependence for HH than VV polarization, especially more so at a larger incident angle. For weakly anisotropic surface, the azimuthal variation of backscattering tends to be a sinusoidal-like pattern. However, with the enhancement of anisotropy, such a scattering pattern is distorted, and the sharp dip appears at up/down direction. As the rms height and dielectric constant increase, the scattering is enhanced on the whole. The HH/VV ratio at lower dielectric constant is greater than that at higher one. In comparison, scattering shows stronger dependence on anisotropy at lower dielectric constant, especially at a larger incident angle. As an application example, we compare the model predictions with reported measurements from two different sites. Preliminary results are quite encouraging, and thus, the analysis presented in this paper is potentially useful to predict and interpret backscattering from crop field surface, where strong anisotropic surfaces commonly present due to plowing or raking practice. Surface ultraviolet (UV) observations can be obtained from satellite or ground observations. This paper uses one data fusion technique (similar to Kalman filter) to combine the advantages from both sources of observations, aiming at achieving a better estimate of surface UV. In this paper, new mathematical methods and algorithms were developed to estimate the error covariance and correlation region, which are the most important components in this data fusion technique. This technique was applied to the satellite data from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS)-Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) combined with ground measurements from UV-B Monitoring and Research Program (UVMRP) within the region of continental U.S. from 2005 to 2015. Numerical experiments showed that the technique is effective, and TOMS-OMI data were improved by combining UVMRP data. This paper aims to achieve computationally efficient and high-accuracy subpixel image registration with large displacements under the rotation–scale–translation model. This paper employs the classical phase correlation algorithm and the Lucas–Kanade (LK) algorithm in a two-stage coarse-to-fine framework, for which the motivation is from the observation that the two algorithms exhibit strong complementary property between convergence range and subpixel accuracy. In this framework, the LK algorithm will also become computationally efficient owing to the small residual displacement. On the other hand, this paper takes into account the residual model with respect to the compensation scheme explicitly, and deduces formulas for the final results combination, which is expected to be closer to the true displacement vector and thus further improve the estimation accuracy. Since the compensation can be applied to either the target image or the reference image, two algorithms are presented accordingly, and analysis as well as comparison are also performed. Image segmentation techniques are challenging to apply to large-size remote sensing imagery. Indeed, if the data to be processed are larger than the computer’s available memory, it must be split into smaller pieces. Without precaution, segmentation errors appear along the edges of these pieces. The goal of this paper is to present a tilewise processing method to overcome this issue for superpixel segmentation, applied in particular to the simple linear iterative clustering algorithm. Incidentally, tilewise methods allow for several pieces of the image to be processed simultaneously, which enables the deployment of these methods in a parallel processing environment. Estimations of the speed-up when using multiple processors are provided. Then, it is demonstrated that the result of the tilewise segmentation is equivalent to the segmentation of the complete image, with respect to a number of global unsupervised segmentation criteria. Linear spectral unmixing is the practice of decomposing the mixed pixel into a linear combination of the constituent endmembers and the estimated abundances. This paper focuses on unsupervised spectral unmixing where the endmembers are unknown a priori. Conventional approaches use either geometrical- or statistical-based approaches. In this paper, we address the challenges of spectral unmixing with unsupervised deep learning models, in specific, the autoencoder models, where the decoder serves as the endmembers and the hidden layer output serves as the abundances. In several recent attempts, part-based autoencoders have been designed to solve the unsupervised spectral unmixing problem. However, the performance has not been satisfactory. In this paper, we first discuss some important findings we make on issues with part-based autoencoders. By proof of counterexample, we show that all existing part-based autoencoder networks with nonnegative and tied encoder and decoder are inherently defective by making these inappropriate assumptions on the network structure. As a result, they are not suitable for solving the spectral unmixing problem. We propose a so-called untied denoising autoencoder with sparsity, in which the encoder and decoder of the network are independent, and only the decoder of the network is enforced to be nonnegative. Furthermore, we make two critical additions to the network design. First, since denoising is an essential step for spectral unmixing, we propose to incorporate the denoising capacity into the network optimization in the format of a denoising constraint rather than cascading another denoising preprocessor in order to avoid the introduction of additional reconstruction error. Second, to be more robust to the inaccurate estimation of a number of endmembers, we adopt an $l_{21}$ -norm on the encoder of the network to reduce the redundant endmembers while decreasing the reconstruction error simultaneously. To advance the utility of polarimetric synthetic aperture radar observations for extracting biophysical information about vegetation canopies, it is important to develop good understanding of the scattering mechanisms that give rise to the polarimetric scattering response and to apply it toward the development of effective decomposition models of the polarimetric covariance matrices. In this paper, we introduce a more rigorous approach to characterizing the volume scattering component of the three-component scattering model developed by Freeman and Durden. The improved rigor has two aspects: 1) the use of a T-matrix model for computing the polarimetric scattering by an inclined dielectric cylinder and 2) the incorporation of the change in local incidence angle as a function of the orientation of the vegetation cylinders. The improvements address some of the current limitations of the Freeman–Durden model. This paper also provides a sensitivity analysis of the various components of the covariance matrix as a function of several physical parameters including cylinder size, its dielectric constant, and the orientation distribution of cylinders. This paper presents a novel approach to automatically detect and count cars in different aerial images, which can be satellite or unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) images. Variations in satellite and/or UAV data make it particularly challenging to have a robust method that works properly on a variety of images. A solution based on the bag-of-words (BoW) model is explored in this paper due to its invariance characteristic and highly stable performance in object/scene categorization. Different from categorization tasks, vehicle detection needs to localize the positions of cars in images. To make BoW suitable for this purpose, we extensively improve the methodology in three aspects, namely, by introducing a recently proposed feature representation, i.e., the local steering kernel descriptor, adding spatial structure constraints, and developing an orientation aware scanning mechanism to produce detection with “one-window-one-car” results. Experiments are conducted on various aerial images with large variations, which consist of data from two public databases, e.g., the Overhead Imagery Research Data Set and Vehicle Detection in Aerial Imagery, as well as other satellite and UAV images. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method. Compared with existing techniques, the proposed method is applicable to a wider range of aerial images. Arising from the various object types and scales, diverse imaging orientations, and cluttered backgrounds in optical remote sensing image (RSI), it is difficult to directly extend the success of salient object detection for nature scene image to the optical RSI. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end deep network called LV-Net based on the shape of network architecture, which detects salient objects from optical RSIs in a purely data-driven fashion. The proposed LV-Net consists of two key modules, i.e., a two-stream pyramid module (L-shaped module) and an encoder–decoder module with nested connections (V-shaped module). Specifically, the L-shaped module extracts a set of complementary information hierarchically by using a two-stream pyramid structure, which is beneficial to perceiving the diverse scales and local details of salient objects. The V-shaped module gradually integrates encoder detail features with decoder semantic features through nested connections, which aims at suppressing the cluttered backgrounds and highlighting the salient objects. In addition, we construct the first publicly available optical RSI data set for salient object detection, including 800 images with varying spatial resolutions, diverse saliency types, and pixel-wise ground truth. Experiments on this benchmark data set demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art salient object detection methods both qualitatively and quantitatively. This paper proposes a complex-valued convolutional neural network for land form classification and discovery in interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). Since the amount of satellite-borne SAR data has been increasing drastically, it is necessary to structurize the local features contained in observation data prior to utilization in the so-called big data framework for higher usability. Convolutional neural networks have such potential in general. However, there exists no network that can deal with complex amplitude data obtained in InSAR consistently. In this paper, we propose a complex-valued convolutional neural network to deal with InSAR. We demonstrate that the network classifies slopes and plains adaptively and, moreover, indicates small volcanos similar to a sample volcano (Omuroyama) included in the InSAR data. We also find their characteristic features emerging in the kernels in the convolution layers. These results reveal that the proposed complex-valued convolutional neural network is capable of successfully discovering unidentified lands similar to a prepared sample, which is highly useful for the InSAR data structurization. Capon’s minimum-variance method (MVM) and amplitude and phase estimation (APES) spectral estimation algorithms can be applied to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) processing to improve the resolution and suppress sidelobe levels. In this paper, we use Capon-/APES-based SAR reprocessing algorithms to increase the persistent scatterer (PS) density in PS interferometry (PSI). We propose a PS candidate (PSC) selection algorithm applicable to the superresolution reprocessed images and the corresponding processing chain. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by a number of simulations and a stack of TerraSAR-X data. The results show that the Capon algorithm outperforms others in PSC selection. We present a full PSI time-series analysis on the PSCs extracted from the Capon-reprocessed stacks. The results show that the PS density is increased between 50% and 60%, while their interferometric quality is maintained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The design of the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument was driven by the scientific community’s desire to have near-daily global coverage at moderate resolution (~1km) with comprehensive spectral coverage from visible to long-wave infrared wavelengths. Since their launches in 1999 and 2002, respectively, the Terra and Aqua MODIS instruments have made continuous global observations and generated numerous data products to help users worldwide with their studies of the Earth’s system and its short- and long-term changes. The 20 reflective solar bands (RSBs) with wavelengths from 0.41 to $2.2~\mu \text{m}$ collect data at three nadir spatial resolutions: 250 m, 500 m, and 1 km. The solar diffuser (SD) coupled with the SD stability monitor (SDSM) provides a reflectance-based calibration on-orbit. In addition, lunar observations and response trends from pseudoinvariant desert sites are used to characterize the response versus scan-angle changes on-orbit. This paper provides a brief overview of MODIS RSB calibration algorithms, as implemented in the latest Level 1B version 6.1, operational activities, on-orbit performance, remaining challenges, and potential improvements. Results from the SD and SDSM measurements show a wavelength and mirror-side-dependent degradation in RSB responses, with the largest degradation at the shortest wavelengths, particularly for Terra MODIS. Aqua MODIS has experienced far less degradation of its optics and on-board calibrators compared with Terra MODIS, resulting in an overall better performance. With the exception of Aqua band 6, there have been no new noisy or inoperable detectors in the RSB of either instrument during postlaunch operations. As the instruments age and continue to endure the space environment, the detectors and the optical systems degrade. The challenges associated with incorporating these on-orbit changes to ensure a production of high-quality calibrated L1B data products are also discussed in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growing need for high-performance imaging tools for terrorist threat detection and medical diagnosis has led to the development of new active architectures in the microwave and millimeter range. Notably, multiple-input multiple-output systems can meet the resolution constraints imposed by these applications by creating large, synthetic radiating apertures with a limited number of antennas used independently in transmitting and receiving signals. However, the implementation of such systems is coupled with strong constraints in the software layer, requiring the development of reconstruction techniques capable of interrogating the observed scene by optimizing both the resolution of images reconstructed in two or three dimensions and the associated computation times. In this paper, we first review the formalisms and constraints associated with each application by taking stock of efficient processing techniques based on spectral decompositions, and then, we present a new technique called the transverse spectrum deconvolution range migration algorithm allowing us to carry out reconstructions that are both faster and more accurate than with conventional Fourier domain processing techniques. This paper is particularly relevant to the development of new computational imaging tools that require, even more pronouncedly than in the case of conventional architectures, fast image computing techniques despite a very large number of radiating elements interrogating the scene to be imaged. The article presents information on the 2003 IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society's (GRS-S) Awards that were presented at the IGARSS'03 banquet on July 24 at Hotel Dieu in Toulouse, France. Charles Luther, the president of the society, presented those awards with the assistance of the Awards Committee Chairman Werner Wiesbeck. The award ceremony was started with the recognition of the IEEE Fellows who have declared the GRS-Society as their home society. The GRS-S Transactions Editor, based on recommendations of associate editors and reviewers, compiled the list of nominees for the Transactions Prize Paper Award.

Tandem-L is proposed as a spaceborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) mission developed and operated by the German Aerospace Center in cooperation with several Helmholtz research centers and the German space industries. The mission concept comprises two fully polarimetric radar satellites providing monostatic and bistatic SAR imagery. A key feature of these SAR sensors is the employment of large lightweight unfurlable mesh reflectors fed by digital feed arrays. The main advantage of this new SAR system concept is the provision of large antenna apertures in space and flexible operation via reconfigurable feed electronics. By this, it becomes possible to map, for the first time, a continuous 350-km wide swath with a 7-m azimuth resolution with excellent noise equivalent sigma zero and ambiguity suppression. This paper shall give an overview on the technical aspects of the Tandem-L SAR instrument and antenna design. In particular, after a short review of the SAR system requirements, the concept of reflector SAR systems is outlined and the operation principle is presented. General guidelines for the design of array-fed reflector antennas with application to SAR imaging are given. Then, the optimization approach of the feed array design is detailed with a specific emphasis on a fixed beamforming concept in azimuth. In this context, also the problem of cross-pol pattern mitigation is addressed. These optimization steps are shown to be crucial for achieving the performance requirements in quad-pol acquisitions. Beamforming in elevation is performed onboard the spacecraft via digital hardware. This paper presents the beamforming architecture on receive for Tandem-L, which would apply in general for instance also to planar multielevation beam SAR antennas with Scan-On-Receive capabilities. Tandem-L is operated as a staggered SAR, which means varying the pulse repetition interval from pulse to pulse. In this context, the major design challenges are presented. Moreover, the impact of pulse staggering on the imaging performance is discussed. Tandem-L’s SAR performance is presented by means of numerical simulations showing that the performance requirements imposed by the scientific user community could be met. This paper presents the ice thickness, fine resolution internal reflecting horizons (IRHs), and distinct bottom topography measurements of Chinese Kunlun Station and Grove Mountains, Antarctica, derived from sounding these glaciers with a high-resolution radar. To enable the development of next-generation ice-sheet models, we need information on IRHs, bottom topography, and basal conditions. To this end, we performed measurements with the progressively improved ice-sounding radar system, currently known as the high-resolution ice-sounding radar developed by the Key Laboratory of Electromagnetic Radiation and Sensing Technology of Institute of Electronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China. We processed the collected data using focused synthetic aperture radar (SAR) algorithm named the modified range migration algorithm using curvelets and the modified nonlinear chirp scaling algorithm to improve radar sensitivity and reduce along-track surface clutter. Representative results from selected transects indicate that we successfully sounded 3-km-thick ice with a fine resolution of 0.75 m. In this paper, we provide a brief description of the radar system, discuss the focused SAR processing algorithms, and provide sample results to demonstrate the successful sounding of the ice sheet in Antarctica. Since the beginning of the altimeter mission TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P), followed by Jason-1 and Jason-2 on similar orbits, and many other missions on different orbits (ERS, EnviSat, etc.), mean sea level (MSL) products became essential for the comprehension of global ocean circulation. Since early in the T/P mission, a suspicious signal, having a period of near 59 days and amplitude of roughly 5 mm, was apparent in the Global MSL record. Compared with the 4–5-mm amplitude of the annual signal, the 59-day signal has understandably attracted attention. Moreover, the same signal has been subsequently detected in Jason-1 and later in Jason-2 MSLs. In 2010, the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team (OSTST) concluded this signal as the aliasing of a higher frequency error inherited from the tide model correction: the semi-diurnal wave S2. The source of this error was mainly attributed to T/P measurements, which were assimilated in ocean tide models. When these models are used in the computation of T/P MSL, most of the error cancels. However, this error is communicated to Jason-1 and Jason-2 MSLs. In order to gather and publish the OSTST analyses on this matter, this paper first attempts to list the myriad possibilities for the puzzling 59-day error in MSL. Then, this paper goes deeper into the description of the main contributor to this list: the tide models error. Indeed, since 2010, considerable efforts have been undertaken within the ocean tide community in order to correct ocean tide S2-waves from this error, particularly in the Goddard Ocean Tide (GOT) and finite element solution (FES) latest versions. Comparing several GOT and FES versions and a pure hydrodynamic tide model, this paper assesses, quantifies, and describes a reduction of the MSL 59-day error thanks to the latest releases. These analyses also confirm that a large part of this error has its origins in the T/P mission and has contaminated ocean tide solutions and Jason-1 and Jason-2 MSLs. They also suggest that ocean tide is not the only possible vector. This paper addresses the performance in the retrieval of 3-D mean deformation maps by exploiting simultaneous or quasi-simultaneous squinted synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometric acquisitions in a repeat-pass scenario. In multisatellite or multibeam low earth observation missions, the availability of two (or more) lines of sight (LOSs) allows the simultaneous acquisition of SAR images with different squint angles, hence improving the sensitivity to the north–south component of the deformation. Due to the simultaneity of the acquisitions, the troposphere will be highly correlated and, therefore, will tend to cancel out when performing the differential measurement between the interferograms obtained with the different LOSs, hence resulting in a practically troposphere-free estimation of the along-track deformation measurement. In practice, however, the atmospheric noise in the differential measurement will increase for increasing angular separations. This paper expounds the mathematical framework to derive the performance by properly considering the correlation of the atmospheric delays between the simultaneous acquisitions. To that aim, the hybrid Cramér–Rao bound is exploited making use of the autocorrelation function of the troposphere. The existing methods for motion compensation in inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) imaging are generally limited to the low-order target motion model, and require iterative optimization with limited velocity estimate precision and heavy computational burdens. This paper proposes a high-precision method of phase-derived velocity measurement (PDVM) and applies it to motion compensation of ISAR imaging. The method applies PDVM based on range profiles cross correlation to the translational velocity estimation of targets, and converts the velocity measurement results to the corresponding range increment. The equivalent phase-derived range measurement precision can reach the order of magnitude of millimeter (mm) or even sub-mm, which can satisfy the precision requirements of both envelope alignment and phase adjustment. The key to realizing PDVM is resolving phase ambiguity. The traditional method for resolving ambiguity has very high requirements for the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This work resolves ambiguity by combining multiframe data, i.e., by resolving ambiguity of multiframe data simultaneously instead of resolving ambiguity of single-frame data independently and correcting the above ambiguity-resolving results using a minimum-entropy method. Therefore, phase ambiguity can be correctly resolved under a relatively low SNR. Experimental results of an ISAR imaging of an airplane show that the method proposed in this paper can obtain high-quality ISAR imagery, and can efficiently realize robust imaging under the conditions of low SNR. Forward-looking ground-penetrating radar (FLGPR) has recently been investigated as a remote-sensing modality for buried target detection (e.g., landmines). In this context, raw FLGPR data are beamformed into images, and then, computerized algorithms are applied to automatically detect subsurface buried targets. Most existing algorithms are supervised, meaning that they are trained to discriminate between labeled target and nontarget imagery, usually based on features extracted from the imagery. A large number of features have been proposed for this purpose; however, thus far it is unclear as to which are the most effective. The first goal of this paper is to provide a comprehensive comparison of detection performance using existing features on a large collection of FLGPR data. Fusion of the decisions resulting from processing each feature is also considered. The second goal of this paper is to investigate two modern feature learning approaches from the object recognition literature: the bag-of-visual words and the Fisher vector for FLGPR processing. The results indicate that the new feature learning approaches lead to the best performing FLGPR algorithm. In this paper, with respect to multichannel synthetic aperture radar (SAR), we first formulate the problems of Doppler ambiguities on the radial velocity (RV) estimation of a ground moving target in the range-compressed domain, the range-Doppler domain, and the image domain, respectively. It is revealed that in these problems, the cascaded time-space Doppler ambiguity (CTSDA) may arise; that is, the time domain Doppler ambiguity in each channel arises first and then the spatial domain Doppler ambiguity among multichannels arises second. Accordingly, the multichannel SAR systems with different parameters are investigated in three cases with different Doppler ambiguity properties. Then, a multifrequency SAR is proposed for the RV estimation by solving the ambiguity problem based on the Chinese remainder theorem (CRT). In the first two cases, the ambiguity problem can be solved by the existing closed-form robust CRT. In the third case, it is found that the problem is different from the conventional CRT problem and we call it a double remaindering problem in this paper. We then propose a sufficient condition under which the double remaindering problem, i.e., the CTSDA, can also be solved by the closed-form robust CRT. When the sufficient condition is not satisfied, a searching-based method is proposed. In recent years, synthetic aperture radar interferometry has become a recognized geodetic tool for observing ground motion. For monitoring areas with low density of coherent targets, artificial corner reflectors (CRs) are usually introduced. The required size of a reflector depends on radar wavelength and resolution and on the required deformation accuracy. CRs have been traditionally used to provide a high signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR). However, large dimensions can make the reflector bulky, difficult to install and maintain. Furthermore, if a large number of reflectors are needed for long infrastructure, such as vegetation-covered dikes, the total price of the reflectors can become unaffordable. On the other hand, small reflectors have the advantage of easy installation and low cost. In this paper, we design and study the use of small reflectors with low SCR for ground motion monitoring. In addition, we propose a new closed-form expression to estimate the interferometric phase precision of resolution cells containing a (strong or weak) point target and a clutter. Through experiments, we demonstrate that the small reflectors can also deliver displacement estimates with an accuracy of a few millimeters. This paper presents a whole new method for simulating a raw signal of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) with trajectory deviation. In this paper, a SAR raw signal is viewed as a spatial function in terms of radar location, at a fixed range frequency component of the radar signal. It is disclosed and verified that the SAR raw signals is band limited from the perspective of spatial spectrum analysis. Based on this finding, SAR raw signals under condition of trajectory deviation are obtained by interpolating the SAR raw signal along a set of ideally linear trajectories. The unprecedent performance achieved by the new method mainly includes the following. First, it provides a way to update existing simulators designed for ideally linear trajectory, giving them the capability to take trajectory deviation into consideration. Second, it is an efficient SAR raw signal simulator whose validity limit is greatly expanded compared with existing efficient simulators, as many constraints are eliminated without sacrificing computational efficiency or phase accuracy. Third, it is a uniform framework applicable for multiple SAR acquisition modes. Finally, the computational complexity of Monte Carlo experiment under various trajectory deviations is dramatically reduced, at the expense of storage memory requirement. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission, launched in January 2015, was designed to provide a global soil moisture product at medium resolution (~9 km), by combining observations from its radar and radiometer. Several downscaling methods have been proposed by the SMAP team for this purpose. This paper evaluates another candidate downscaling method, namely, the Bayesian merging approach. While this has been tested using a synthetic data set across the USA, it is imperative that it can also be tested using the experimental data for a comprehensive range of land surface conditions (i.e., in different hydro-climatic regions) prior to a global application. Consequently, this paper applies this method using the data collected from SMAP experiments field campaigns in south-eastern Australia that closely simulated the SMAP data stream for a single SMAP radiometer pixel over a three-week interval. The method studied here differs from the linear downscaling methods of the SMAP mission, in that it uses a nonlinear method based on Bayes’ theorem. The medium-resolution soil moisture product is obtained using background soil moisture estimates that are updated according to the difference between the observed and predicted brightness temperatures and backscatter coefficients, relating the high- and low-resolution data. Results were assessed against a reference soil moisture map derived from high-resolution airborne radiometer observations. The root-mean-square-error and R^2 for the Bayesian merging method were found to be 0.02 cm3/cm3 and 0.55, respectively, at 9-km resolution, being similar to the SMAP’s “optional” downscaling method. Detection of small targets, more specifically cars, in aerial images of urban scenes, has various applications in several domains, such as surveillance, military, remote sensing, and others. This is a tremendously challenging problem, mainly because of the significant interclass similarity among objects in urban environments, e.g., cars and certain types of nontarget objects, such as buildings’ roofs and windows. These nontarget objects often possess very similar visual appearance to that of cars making it hard to separate the car and the noncar classes. Accordingly, most past works experienced low precision rates at high recall rates. In this paper, a novel framework is introduced that achieves a higher precision rate at a given recall than the state of the art. The proposed framework adopts a sliding-window approach and it consists of four stages, namely, window evaluation, extraction and encoding of features, classification, and postprocessing. This paper introduces a new way to derive descriptors that encode the local distributions of gradients, colors, and texture. Image descriptors characterize the aforementioned cues using adaptive cell distributions, wherein the distribution of cells within a detection window is a function of its dominant orientation, and hence, neither the rotation of the patch under examination nor the computation of descriptors at different orientations is required. The performance of the proposed framework has been evaluated on the challenging Vaihingen and Overhead Imagery Research data sets. This paper critically analyzes several incoherent model-based decomposition methods for assessing the effect of deorientation in characterization of various land covers. It has been found that even after performing decomposition, ambiguity still occurs in scattering response from various land covers, such as urban and vegetation. Researchers introduced the concept of deorientation to remove this ambiguity. Therefore, in this paper, a critical analysis has been carried out using seven different three- and four-component decomposition methods with and without deorientation and two Eigen decomposition-based methods to investigate the scattering response on various land covers, such as urban, vegetation, bare soil, and water. The comprehensive evaluation of decomposition and deorientation effect has been performed by both visual and quantitative analyses. Two types of quantitative analysis have been performed; first, by observing percentage of scattering power and second, by analyzing the variation in the number of pixels in different land covers for each scattering contribution. The analysis shows that deorientation increases not only the power but also the number of pixels for surface and double bounce scattering. The number of pixels representing volume scattering remain almost the same for all the methods with or without deorientation, whereas volume scattering power reduces after deorientation. With three coherent synthetic aperture radar images, it is possible to form three interferograms. In some cases, the phases of the three averaged interferograms will be significantly inconsistent and indicate a sort of phase excess or deficit (which we call lack of triangularity or inconsistency). In this paper, we illustrate theoretically which models can explain such phenomenon and provide some real-data examples. It is also shown that two or more independent scattering mechanisms are necessary to explain phase inconsistencies. The observation of lack of consistency might be useful to derive information on the target and as a warning that the scatterer presents a temporal covariance matrix, which is not intrinsically real, with consequences for the processing of interferometric stacks. The knowledge of the water vapor (WV) distribution in the Earth’s atmosphere is of great importance for weather prediction. Meteorological models, in particular, the so-called limited area models, can assimilate humidity measurements, increasing the reliability of the simulated atmospheric dynamics. An important improvement can be achieved, for instance, if we are able to provide the total column with a sufficient precision and accuracy. In this paper, the novel normalized differential spectral attenuation (NDSA) approach is applied to retrieve the vertical profile of WV—and thus the total column—from measurements of differential attenuation signals at microwaves. A forward model (FM) has been used to simulate the ray-tracing of a microwave signal from a transmitter to a receiver in the atmosphere by using the 3-D atmospheric parameters as provided by a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model. From the NDSA measurement, the integrated WV (IWV) content can be directly derived. A further retrieval code is able to invert the measurements of IWV along the path length, providing the vertical humidity profile, which is directly related to the total vertical column assimilated by weather prediction models. In this paper, we show that the values of the total column can be retrieved with a precision and accuracy up to about 0.6% and 2.1%, respectively, which could have a positive impact on NWP models at short time scale. Polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data are inevitably contaminated by polarization crosstalk and channel imbalance, which propagate to the error of final remote sensing product. To ensure the successful estimation of forest heights from forthcoming polarimetric SAR interferometry (PolinSAR) campaigns, a critical study on the polarimetric system requirements of PolinSAR for forest height mapping must be carried out. This paper establishes an analytical model for forest height estimation error including dependences on polarimetric system parameters including crosstalk, channel imbalance, and system noise. Simulation analyses are conducted on the real airborne SAR data acquired by the E-SAR system to validate the proposed theoretical error dependence model. We demonstrate that the established error model can be used not only by the system designers as a guidance for setting the polarimetric system requirements of PolinSAR for forest height mapping, but also by the data analyst to correct for systematic bias in the forest height inversion. This paper presents the real-time monitoring of a grapevine’s water content that flows up through the xylem tissue by means of a frequency-modulated continuous-wave radar. The application of an optimization process, based on the super-resolution multiple signal classification algorithm, has enabled the reduction of the bandwidth required to discern the xylem water content and, thus, the operating frequency, achieving a depth resolution of at least 3 mm. This design advantage has resulted in a significant step forward toward a real life application, allowing the use of fully-integrated off-the-shelf components in order to implement a completely portable low-power cost-effective radar at 23.1 GHz with a 3.4-GHz bandwidth. The sensor performance has been evaluated by means of three different experiments: irrigation cycles, day/night cycles, and comparison between irrigation cycles at different temperatures. From the experimental results, it is possible to assert that the contactless sensor presented in this paper is very sensitive to changes in the plant’s water content, differentiating between daytime and nighttime. In addition, it has been proven that temperature has a noticeable influence over the evapotranspiration, observing negative drying slopes of 5.62 and 6.28 mV/cycle at 23 °C and 26 °C, respectively. While many microwave studies related to tree emission have been undertaken, a few have considered the effect of phenological change on the emission from coniferous trees. The permittivity of vegetation tissue is known to be influenced by water content, while the water content and phase is sensitive to temperature in particular at temperatures below freezing. In addition to temperature, canopy-intercepted snow might also modify the tree emission and transmissivity in the microwave range. In this paper, a season-long experiment was designed to quantify the effect of snow accumulation and temperature on the observed microwave transmissivity from tree. A ground-based, upward-pointing multifrequency radiometer was used to monitor the microwave emissivity of a single coniferous tree at a site in Northern Finland. Radiometer measurements were combined with measurements of the canopy-intercepted snow cover and tree skin temperature. This paper presents two important findings. First, the tree transmissivity was strongly correlated with tree skin temperature under subzero temperature conditions, but uncorrelated with skin temperature changes above freezing. Second, although the tree transmissivity was slightly affected by the snow accumulation on the tree canopy, the overall influence on tree emission was statistically insignificant in this paper. This paper proposes a new scheme of motion parameter estimation and relocation for airborne three-channel circular stripmap synthetic aperture radar (CSSAR)-ground moving target indication (GMTI) systems. Compared with the conventional straight-path SAR, the parameter estimation of a target is more challenging because the target’s range history and signal model are more complicated due to the complexity of the relative motion between CSSAR and ground moving target. In this paper, the signal model of a ground moving target and the expression for its along-track interferometric (ATI) phase from the environment of airborne three-channel CSSAR are derived. The coupling effect among the target’s motion and position parameters is also figured out. Then, a scheme of motion parameter estimation and relocation is proposed. The proposed scheme utilizes the ATI phase and the quadratic-term coefficient in the range equation to estimate the target’s motion and position parameters and utilizes an iterative strategy to address the coupling effect among these parameters. Dense stereo image matching in remotely sensed images is a challenging problem, though it has been studied for more than two decades, due to occlusions, discontinuities, geometric, and radiometric distortions. A novel multiobjective fitness function-based dense stereo matching approach using genetic algorithms (GAs) is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is useful for estimating dense disparity map with an improved number of inliers for a stereo image pair, despite the constraint of finding correct disparity at depth discontinuities. In this paper, the steps of GA, such as initialization of the population, fitness function, and crossover and mutation operation, are designed and implemented to effectively deal with the problem of dense stereo image matching. To initialize the population, a Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) descriptor is computed for each pixel and multiple-size window-based matching is performed, using the similarity measures: 1) Euclidean distance and 2) spectral angle mapper. The generated disparity maps are pruned to choose a suitable subset using the designed fitness functions, considering the constraints related to stereo image pair, such as epipolar constraint, which encodes the epipolar geometry and the similarity measure that is useful to decide accuracy of the correspondences. The two objective functions are the number of inliers computed using the fundamental matrix and an energy minimization function, considering discontinuities and occlusions. The usefulness of this approach for remotely sensed stereo image pairs is demonstrated by improving the number of inliers and favorably comparing with state-of-the-art dense stereo image matching methods. This paper proposes a novel approach to interpreting the satellite attitude based on inverse synthetic aperture radar (ISAR) images. In the conventional viewpoint, quadratic and higher order phase terms of ISAR imagery are regarded as negative factors causing the defocusing phenomenon. In this paper, we introduce how to apply quadratic phase coefficients to estimate target attitude from the ISAR imagery. A geometric projection model of ISAR imaging is built according to radar line of sight, and an explicit expression is also derived to connect target attitude parameters and the image defocusing property. With the accommodation of Broyden–Fletcher–Goldfarb–Shanno algorithm, spatial-variant quadratic phase coefficients together with attitude parameters are determined by an image contrast maximization. We also extend the proposed algorithm to multistatic ISAR applications, where the quadratic phase information lying in simultaneous multistatic ISAR images can be mined to enhance the performance of target attitude estimation. Remotely sensed sea-surface temperature (SST) retrievals with a significant positive bias during the occurrence of upwelling phenomena along the southeastern coast of Brazil were reported in our companion paper. As a result, this paper proposes an automated bias correction algorithm to improve the MODIS long-wave multichannel SST (MCSST) retrievals during the abovementioned conditions in this region. In this paper, MODIS daytime SST data (SSTMODIS) and differences between brightness temperatures in MODIS channels 31 and 32 (BT31 − BT32) are analyzed simultaneously with hourly wind surface conditions, in situ SST at 0.3 and 10 m in depth (SSTbuoy03 and SSTbuoy10), and sensible and latent heat fluxes from the Cabo Frio buoy data (at 23° S, 42° W) during 2014. The obtained results show that some upwelling events present air temperature ($T_{\mathrm {air}}$) greater than SSTbuoy03 and low-atmospheric water vapor content. A simultaneous occurrence of these factors during upwelling conditions may lead to a warm-skin layer effect and may cause BT31 to be greater than SSTbuoy03 and BT31 − BT32 to be small (−0.18 °C ± 0.22 °C), affecting the MCSST performance. The proposed bias correction algorithm uses a least-squares curve between SSTbuoy03 and SSTMODIS retrievals when BT31 − BT32 ≤ 0.5 °C (i.e., dry atmospheric conditions). The bias correction algorithm has significantly improved the SSTMODIS bias (RMSE) from 1.43 °C to −0.2 °C (1.60 °C to 0.58 °C) when applied to 22 cloud-free pixels of MODIS during January–March of 2015. Recently, researchers have shown the powerful ability of deep methods with multilayers to extract high-level features and to obtain better performance for hyperspectral image classification. However, a common problem of traditional deep models is that the learned deep models might be suboptimal because of the limited number of training samples, especially for the image with large intraclass variance and low interclass variance. In this paper, novel convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with multiscale convolution (MS-CNNs) are proposed to address this problem by extracting deep multiscale features from the hyperspectral image. Moreover, deep metrics usually accompany with MS-CNNs to improve the representational ability for the hyperspectral image. However, the usual metric learning would make the metric parameters in the learned model tend to behave similarly. This similarity leads to obvious model’s redundancy and, thus, shows negative effects on the description ability of the deep metrics. Traditionally, determinantal point process (DPP) priors, which encourage the learned factors to repulse from one another, can be imposed over these factors to diversify them. Taking advantage of both the MS-CNNs and DPP-based diversity-promoting deep metrics, this paper develops a CNN with multiscale convolution and diversified metric to obtain discriminative features for hyperspectral image classification. Experiments are conducted over four real-world hyperspectral image data sets to show the effectiveness and applicability of the proposed method. Experimental results show that our method is better than original deep models and can produce comparable or even better classification performance in different hyperspectral image data sets with respect to spectral and spectral–spatial features. Wind scatterometer measurements are collected over an irregular grid, and processing is required to generate backscatter images on an Earth-centered grid. The most common algorithms used for this are “drop in the bucket” (DIB) and variations of the scatterometer image reconstruction (SIR) algorithm. These algorithms are also used for radiometer brightness temperature imaging. The Backus–Gilbert (BG) algorithm has been used for radiometer imaging but has not been applied to scatterometer backscatter imaging. In this paper, the application of BG to scatterometer backscatter imaging is explored and its performance is compared to DIB and SIR. Like SIR, optimally tuned BG is capable of producing higher resolution images than DIB, though its noise performance is slightly inferior to SIR’s. While BG and SIR produce similar results for radiometer data, the higher relative noise level of scatterometer data increases the differences between the SIR and BG algorithm performance, and limits the performance of BG relative to SIR in scatterometer imaging. Land surface temperature and emissivity (LST&E) are key variables for a wide variety of surface–atmosphere studies, and it is very important to validate the accuracy of different LST&E retrieval algorithms. In this paper, the accuracy of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) temperature emissivity separation (TES) algorithm with the water vapor scaling (WVS) method and the ASTER standard LSE&E products (without WVS) was validated using 12 ASTER scenes from May 2012 to September 2012 with concurrent ground LST and emissivity measurements collected in an arid area in northwest China during the Heihe Watershed Allied Telemetry Experimental Research experiment. Both the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and MOD07 atmospheric profile products were employed to perform the atmospheric correction. The results showed that the WVSTES LSTs retrieved from the two profiles both demonstrate good accuracies, with average biases of 0.34 and 0.24 K and average root-mean-square errors (RMSEs) of 1.52 and 1.46 K for the NCEP and MOD07 profiles, respectively. When the WVS was not applied, we obtained an average bias of 1.26 K and an average RMSE of 2.05 K for the AST08 product. The emissivities from the WVSTES algorithm with the two profiles both showed good agreements with the ground CE312 measurements, with mean differences of the five ASTER bands that were less than 0.01. AST05 showed anomalous emissivity spectra and underestimated the emissivity values of graybody surfaces when compared with the ground data, with mean differences of greater than 0.015, which were more obvious for cases with high water vapor. This paper demonstrated that the WVS method is critical for retrieving ASTER TES LST with accuracies within 1.5 K and emissivity within 0.015 for a wide range of atmospheric conditions and land surface types. Monitoring water quality with classical methods is not an easy task. Remote sensing with wide coverage and multiple temporal monitoring is the best solution for surface water quality monitoring. This paper demonstrates the determination of surface water quality parameters by using principal component analysis (PCA) data fusion and mining techniques with the aid of Landsat 8 OLI (L8 OLI), Sentinel 2A (S2A), and Göktürk-2 (GK2) satellite sensors. Chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, total suspended solids, Secchi disk depth, total dissolved substance, and pH were the parameters selected for surface water quality analysis. High spectral resolution of L8 OLI/S2A images and the high spatial resolution of GK2 images were fused and analyzed by a suite of data mining models to provide more reliable images with both high spatial and temporal resolutions. Surface water quality parameters calculated by PCA-based response surface regression (RSR) method were compared with results obtained from multiple linear regression (MLR), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machines (SVMs) data mining methods. The performance of the data mining models derived using only multispectral band data and PCA fused data were quantified using four statistical indices; such as mean-square error (MSE), root MSE, mean absolute error, and coefficient of determination (R2). The analysis confirmed that the PCA-based RSR method is superior to MLR, ANN, and SVM data mining models to accurately estimate water quality parameters in lakes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
