A technique is presented for characterizing a larger array of natural textures which exhibit a roughness that is not strictly scale-invariant. The article also discusses a comparison of multiscale Hurst parameters and traditional Hurst and Gabor features.

An incremental Fourier synthesis technique based on a 2-D fractional Brownian motion (fBm) model is useful in producing 2-D self-similar images. The algorithm which is quick produces stationary increments of fBm using a Fourier synthesis technique and the increments are added to give the nonstationary 2-D fBm process. The use of the fast Fourier transform in the method reduces its computational complexity and the memory requirements. The extension of the technique to produce 3-D and higher fBm is possible.
