The rising cost of production testing for a system-on-a-chip (SoC) is one of the crucial matters to chip makers, due to long test time and costly automated-test-equipment. This paper proposes a spectral leakage-driven built-in self-test (BIST) scheme to precisely predict the nonlinearity of mixed-signal circuits in the loopback mode, thereby accomplishing cost-effectiveness (compared to previous BIST-based works). A digitally synthesized single-tone sinusoidal stimulus used for conventional harmonic testing is incoherently sampled by a device under test (DUT). The DUT output signal exhibits the correlation between the DUT harmonics and the spectral leakage introduced by the incoherent sampling. The DUT output signal is then fed to another DUT through a loopback path, so that the harmonics of a pair of DUTs are correlated with the spectral leakage on the loopback response; the magnitude of the spectral leakage is considered as a weighting factor on the harmonic magnitude of those DUTs. The correlation is quantitatively modeled as characteristic equations in , and postprocessing predicts the harmonics of the two individual DUTs, by simultaneously solving the characteristic equations using on-chip DSP core available in an SoC. Simulation and hardware measurements validated that this paper can be practically used for production testing by showing less than 0.3 and 0.6 dB of the prediction errors, respectively. This special section on "Diagnosis and Prognosis for Complicated Industrial Systems?Part II? is the continuation of its previous part I (IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, Vol. 63, Issue 4, 2016). The diagnosis and prognosis approaches can be roughly classified into two categories: 1) model-based and 2) data-driven approaches. The model-based approaches perform the diagnosis and prognosis relying on the physical models from first principles, whereas the data-driven approaches make full use of the process data to monitor the systems under consideration. Due to the increasing complexity of the industrial system, new challenges are encountered in diagnosis and prognosis of such complicated systems, and more efficient process monitoring approaches are needed. From this point of view, the papers included in this section are focused on the recent developments of diagnosis and prognosis for complicated industrial systems, providing novel ideas and referential directions for both the academic and industrial communities. DC microgrid has attracted more and more attention due to its unique characteristics, but the development of a dc microgrid is also facing some challenges, such as interruption and isolation of short-circuit fault currents. Therefore, the dc circuit breaker plays an important role in ensuring the normal work of a dc microgrid. In this paper, a novel bidirectional dc solid-state circuit breaker is proposed to realize the bidirectional flow of energy, which ensures the higher operating efficiency of the dc microgrid. Compared with other solid-state circuit breakers, the proposed novel topology has simpler structure, common ground, and fewer components. First, this paper makes a detailed analysis of the different working stages of the circuit when the fault occurs in combination with simulation results of the circuit topology. Then, the standard of selecting the components through the calculation and analysis of the circuit is given in this paper. The development of the dc microgrid system on-board has promoted the development of the dc circuit breaker, but short circuit fault may cause serious damage to the system. Many problems exist in the traditional dc circuit breaker such as long periods of fault interruption, complex circuit structure, existing arc, low reliability, and low anti-interference. Aiming to solve these problems, a novel solid-state dc circuit breaker is proposed in this paper. First, this paper analyzes the working principle and process of the circuit in detail according to the results of the simulation based on Saber. Second, this paper gives the criteria on how to choose the parameters of the components correctly in the circuit. The concept of the maximum fault resistance according to the minimum fault current is also introduced. Moreover, this paper analyzes the influence of the minimum fault ramp rate on the circuit performance. DC shipboard power systems have been considered as a promising solution for stricter environmental regulations on ships due to their main benefits in fuel savings with variable speed engines and easy integration of energy storage systems. In order to employ the dc solution in the shipboard power systems, the dc power systems have to be protected from a system fault with protection selectivity to minimize impacts of the fault or to avoid other undesirable situations in the system. For low-voltage dc shipboard power systems, a three-level protection has been proposed: 1) fast action (first)—bus separation by solid-state dc bus-tie switch; 2) medium action (second)—feeder protection by high-speed fuse; and 3) slow action (third)—generator–rectifier fault controls. This paper proposes a new method by means of additional bus capacitance added in main dc buses to help reliable operation of the three-level protection. The principle of the proposed method is introduced and the sizing of the additional bus capacitance is addressed in this paper. With the modeling of the dc shipboard power systems, the analyses of voltage drops for the bus separation failure and fault clearing time for the feeder protection are carried out to verify the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method not only mitigates the voltage drop for the bus separation failure, but also achieves the selectivity and the sensitivity for the feeder protection. Battery safety is one of the most crucial issues in the utilization of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) for all-climate electric vehicles. Short circuit, overcharge, and overheat are three common field failures of LiBs. In this paper, online fault diagnosis for external short circuit (ESC) of LiB packs is investigated. The experiments are carried out to obtain and compare ESC characteristics of 18650-type NMC battery pack and single cell. Based on the analysis of experimental results, a two-step equivalent circuit model is established to describe the ESC process and an online model-based scheme is proposed to diagnose ESC faults of battery packs. The proposed scheme is evaluated by experimental data. The results show that it can effectively diagnose ESC faults in 3.5 s after their occurrences with the terminal voltage error less than 25 mV. The proposed scheme has shown great generalization ability. ESC faults of battery packs under different number of cells connected in series and unavailable current information can also be diagnosed at the terminal voltage error less than 48 and 60 mV, respectively. Although the concept of a multiphase drive system dates back to the middle of the 20th century, the initial pace of development was rather slow, as witnessed by the first two surveys of the area published in the beginning of this century. However, considerably new developments have resulted in the last decade of the 20th century and the beginning of this century, leading to an authoritative survey of the asymmetrical six-phase drive control and subsequently of the review of the complete area. This also initiated the organization and subsequent publication of the first IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics "Special Section on Multiphase Machines and Drives" in May 2008, which commenced with another survey paper, and that contained 12 original research papers. Since the publication of this Special Section in May 2008, the level of interest and pace of developments in the area have further accelerated and substantial new knowledge has been generatedwith an ever-increasing number of published research papers and reported new industrial applications. Such a trend has been emphasized in a recent paper. It therefore seemed appropriate to revisit the area and organize this Special Section as a sequel to the first one. The call for the Special Section papers resulted in 51 submissions, almost twice as many as the total back in 2008, thus confirming a substantial growth of the area. Indeed, the amount of new knowledge acquired since the publication of the first Special Section in 2008 has meant that it was not possible to provide a complete and thorough survey of the field in a single review paper. The main objective of this two-part state-of-the-art paper called “Recent Advances in the Design, Modeling, and Control of Multiphase Machines” is to present latest contributions in the multiphase machines' field. The first part of this paper focuses on the recent progress in the design, modeling, and control, whereas the drive is in healthy operation. This second part presents relevant contributions in two not analyzed fields. The first is in relation with the use of the additional degrees of freedom of multiphase machines and the exploitation of their fault-tolerant capabilities without adding extra hardware. The second one analyzes multiphase generation, particularly in grid-connected wind energy conversion systems and stand-alone applications. Voltage source converter (VSC)-based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems have attractive advantages compared to classical thyristor-based HVDC transmission systems. However, VSC-based HVDC transmission systems are vulnerable to dc side fault, and expensive dc circuit breakers are required to protect them against dc fault. This paper proposes a control method of a dc fault-resilient VSC which can be protected against dc fault without using expensive dc circuit breakers. In the VSC configuration, several H-bridge modules are connected in cascade, so the voltage balancing control of several floating dc capacitors is required. In this paper, an appropriate control structure with the capacitor voltage balancing controller is proposed. The appropriate control algorithm for dc fault operation and recovery after dc fault is also proposed. PSCAD simulation results are presented to validate the proposed control structure under normal and dc fault operating conditions. This paper analyzes different stator windings configurations for permanent-magnet synchronous machines during the presence of a stator turn fault. Due to the inverter pulsewidth modulation, the fault commonly occurs in variable-frequency permanent-magnet machine drives. In this paper, two types of windings are compared to identify key machine topologies that can achieve the reduced influence of the turn fault. When the machine is operated in real time, the windings with separated neutral points reduce the torque ripple caused by fault-reflected flux harmonics. Analytical models based on equivalent circuits are developed to predict the machine flux and torque waveform during the presence of the turn fault. All developed analytical models are verified by the finite-element analysis and experimental results on a 750-W surface permanent-magnet machine prototype. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents real-time diagnosis for open-circuited (O-C) and unbalance faults in power electronic converters (PECs) connected to residential small wind systems grid-tied. The spectrum analysis along with the dc components of the voltage and current measurements available in the converter is utilized for the O-C fault detection, classification and localization of the power switching devices in the PEC, as well as the identification of the unbalance input voltage to the converter. The proposed methodologies in this paper require much fewer inputs compared to the previous researches; therefore, they avoid any additional sensors or hardware which include further costs and expenses on such systems. The experimental evaluations for the proposed algorithms are provided and demonstrate the effectiveness and the robustness of the proposed diagnostic algorithms in this paper. In this paper, a new family of impedance source inverters is presented. It employs high-frequency electrical isolation between the inverter bridge switches and the load along with voltage clamping across the dc-link voltage. Conventional Z-source inverters (ZSIs) employs an impedance network that consists of inductors and capacitors. It has unique features that realize both step-up/step-down functions and eliminates the need of dead/overlap times. This paper extends this novel concept by using electrical isolation in impedance source inverters. High-frequency isolation has many advantages in terms of immunity and reliability; when applied with impedance source inverters this makes ZSIs a preferable choice for industrial applications. In photo-voltaic systems, the addition of the high-frequency transformer provides safety by avoiding the injection of dc circulating current into the grid, without the need of an external bulky line frequency transformer. The gain of the proposed inverter design can be accurately selected by choosing the turns ratio of the high frequency transformer (HFT) or by adjusting the shoot-through duty cycle (STDC) to the inverter. This allows for greater freedom especially when utilizing a higher modulation index, with the STDC allowing dynamic gain adjusts to be done speedily during operation of the inverter. Additionally, a dc-rail voltage clamping technique for the proposed class of isolated ZSIs is also discussed. This technique provides benefits not only in improving the output voltage quality, but also in reducing voltage stress of the active and passive components by minimizing the voltage spikes across the switching devices. In this paper, several high-frequency isolated ZSIs are presented, and an example isolated improved ΓZSI design is shown and discussed in detail. Simulations are provided for the proposed class of isolated inverters to verify their working. Further experimental investigation has been done for which results for the isolated improved ΓZSI are reported. This paper presents a novel method to estimate the number of shorted turns in a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) following the detection of interturn short-circuit (ITSC) fault and its location. In this proposed method, PMSM is excited through a low sinusoidal voltage at standstill condition to obtain the winding resistance and synchronous inductance by current response. It is shown that the ITSC fault introduces variation in the current response, which can be used to calculate the number of shorted turns under zero fault resistance assumption. Using this practical procedure, the fault severity can be estimated directly in a straight-forward manner. In other words, the severity estimation for a given machine can be done without complex machine modeling or experiments on ITSC prototype with multiple taps. The findings in this paper are essential for a comprehensive solution including fault mitigation algorithms and postfault operations. In order to verify the findings, a three-phase equivalent circuit model supported by finite element analysis results is used to take saturation and space harmonics into account. This paper presents an average dwell-time method for fault-tolerant control of a class of uncertain switched linear time-delay systems and also designs an algorithm to determine the parameters pertaining to the dwell-time condition. Compared to the literature results, this paper features the following: 1) the proposed method is independent of switching polices if switchings are slow enough in the average sense; 2) the proposed control design guarantees exponential stabilization of this class of time-delay linear systems with actuator faults; and 3) this method treats all actuators in a unified manner without a need to identify which are faulty or healthy actuators. In grounded photovoltaic (PV) systems, dc leakage to earth is formed by the contribution of the PV modules, inverters, and dc circuitry. Ground faults in such systems occur when there is an unintentional connection between any dc-carrying conductor with a grounded surface or earth. On the occurrence of ground faults, dc leakage will be intensified and will flow through the earth or other conductive paths, before returning back to the source. Thus, it is highly probable that some portion of the dc leakage will attempt to return to the source through any low-resistance paths that exist in the nearby vicinity, for example, through nearby buried pipelines. Therefore, unattended dc leakage may induce stray current corrosion concerns on these pipelines. To this extent, this paper presents a detailed dc interference modeling for assessing the dc leakage activity in PV systems—particularly under undetected fault conditions. First, the modeling carried out embraces the topologically accurate consideration of all sources of dc leakage that are associated with the grounded PV systems. In this paper, an improved postfault strategy is introduced for modular multilevel converters, which utilizes the remaining healthy capacity of the converter more efficiently and increases the line voltage amplitude under these circumstances. Previous works proposed to use the neutral point shift in ac side and dc side of the converter simultaneously. This paper adds a comprehensive and coherent formulation, deep analyzation, and experimental validation. The main improvement of the proposed method is maximizing the line voltage amplitude using the optimum dc component and the best neutral point position. Indeed, fewer restrictions in fault numbers, fewer restrictions in load power factor, and fewer nonsolution conditions are among other improvements of a combined dc and neutral-shift method. Increasing penetration level of distributed generation (DG) units necessitates their participation in supporting power system stability and providing ancillary services. This paper highlights the necessity of supporting the connection voltage by these units under short-term unbalanced voltage sags. To address this, a new regulation scheme, named asymmetrical ride-through (ART), is proposed in this paper. The proposed scheme enforces DG units to properly regulate the voltage within the dynamic limits for three important voltage parameters: positive sequence, negative sequence, and phase voltage magnitude. The main advantages of applying the ART scheme are avoiding unnecessary outages due to temporary unbalanced faults and enhancing the grid stability. As the second contribution, an advanced dynamic voltage support method is also proposed to accurately address the specifications determined in the ART scheme. A strategy for fault detection and tolerance on the inverter that controls power flow in variable-speed permanent-magnet generators is proposed in this paper. The performance of the proposed strategy is analyzed in two different four-wire topologies. In the first topology, the neutral point of the generator is connected to the middle point of the dc-link capacitor bank, whereas in the second topology, it is connected to a fourth leg of the inverter. The main contribution of this paper resides in the control scheme, which allows a steady operation through a fault occurrence without the need of reconfiguring neither the inverter topology nor the control algorithm. In this way, transients and the use of extra hardware components are avoided. In addition, a control loop that allows limiting the generator losses at any operation point is presented in order to protect the machine. Multilevel converters have been well studied for high-voltage high-power renewable energy applications. Owing to the multibranch structure, these converters can be operated under fault conditions in case of a loss of a branch or voltage cell. In this regard, this paper proposes a new active fault-tolerant space vector pulsewidth modulation strategy for single-phase faults in three-phase multilevel converters. The proposed modulation strategy treats the multilevel converter as a two-level converter by introducing an offset vector. A generalized approach is proposed to search for the offset vector and to adjust the modulation of the converter online under different fault operation conditions. Several short- and open-circuit faults have been demonstrated on a seven-level hybrid input-switched converter to prove the effectiveness of the proposed fault-tolerant scheme. As inverters are often used in critical applications, reliability is an important issue. In particular, the power electronic switches and gate drivers, the most essential components of the inverter, are vulnerable parts in real live operation. Therefore, this paper focuses on open-switch fault detection for multilevel inverters. When a single-switch open-circuit fault occurs in one of the power electronic switches, the algorithm can detect the fault and the switch that is causing it. The detection is worked out for both a linear resistive inductive load and an induction motor. The proposed algorithm is an extension of an already available finite-set model-based predictive control algorithm. Therefore, no extra hardware or measurements are required. Dual-inverter configuration has been attracting increasing attention, especially in motor drives, for its advantages in fault tolerance, multilevel modulation effect, dc voltage utilization, etc. However, its switch fault diagnosis is difficult due to the symmetry of the two sub-inverters. A signal processing approach is proposed in this paper to detect the switch open-circuit fault occurrence and further identify the specific faulty switch, benefiting maintenance and fault-tolerant operation. In this scheme, the faulty phase and the faulty switch pair, consisting of the faulty switch and the switch on its diagonal, are identified using the stator phase currents average values. Following that, the bridge of the faulty phase is forced into a unipolar mode by artificially turning off one switch in the healthy pair continuously. Through properly controlling the duty ratios of the other switches in this bridge, the faulty switch is allowed to be further identified from the faulty pair by analyzing the behavior of the induced current in this phase. This approach is independent of either the speed or the voltage information. The effectiveness is validated through experiments on a sensorless controlled open-end winding induction motor drive. This paper discusses the analysis and experimental validation of bidirectional Z-source breaker and bidirectional Z-source breaker using coupled inductor for low-voltage dc microgrid application. The proposed topologies use an SCR as a switch to isolate the fault from the system, and LC network to generate required commutation conditions for the SCR under fault conditions. Thus, both topologies are able to isolate the fault naturally within a few microseconds without any fault detection and sensing circuit. In this paper, the breaker operating principle is discussed during fault condition and breaker design criteria are derived. When the breaker is connected in series with power electronic converter, Z-source components offer filtering characteristic. The filtering characteristic offered by the breaker components is analyzed. This paper proposes a time-domain method to calculate the fault response in multiterminal dc (MTdc) grids and the performance of hybrid dc breakers. The proposed method, based on traveling waves: 1) provides a sound representation of fault performance by considering all created traveling waves; 2) introduces a new approach to estimate the reflection coefficients; and 3) provides an approximation of the worst case fault location. Then, based on the analytical results, three parameters of the hybrid dc circuit breaker, i.e., current limiting reactor, arrester rated voltage, and time delay are optimally selected with respect to maximum overcurrent, maximum overvoltage, fault clearance time, and energy absorption in arresters through multiobjective optimization. Accuracy and performance of the proposed method are evaluated and verified by time-domain simulation studies in the power systems computer aided design (PSCAD)/electromagnetic transients including DC (EMTDC) environment using frequency-dependent models. In this paper, a distributed fast fault diagnosis approach is proposed for multimachine power systems based on deterministic learning (DL) theory. First, a learning estimator is constructed to accumulate the knowledge of transient fault dynamics in power systems. Through DL, a partial persistent excitation condition of the local neurons is satisfied and convergence of the neural weights is achieved. Thus, a knowledge bank can be established and gradually updated. To deal with the high dimensional data, only the neurons centered in a neighborhood of the system trajectory are activated. In this manner, the computation load is mitigated. Second, by using the learnt knowledge, a distributed fault diagnosis scheme is designed to monitor the power system. The memory of the transient fault dynamics can be quickly recalled and a fast fault diagnosis decision is made. Finally, based on the concepts of mismatch interval and duty ratio, the diagnosis capabilities of the proposed scheme are investigated. In the past decades, with the rapid development of modern technologies, a special kind of fault, the intermittent fault (IF) has become a serious threat to system securities. Although fruitful research results have been obtained for fault diagnosis, most of them are concerned with permanent faults. Furthermore, up to now, there has been no overview on the diagnosis techniques for IFs in dynamic systems. In fact, IFs are common in a variety of fields, whereas their research is far from mature and many open issues still remain to be solved. Therefore, in this overview, our main objective is to attract direct attentions from more researchers and engineers into the fascinating area of IF diagnosis. In this paper, the concept, research background, challenges and research motivations of IFs are introduced. This paper proposes a novel hybrid model for analyzing the electromechanical characteristics under stator interturn short-circuit (SISC) fault in synchronous generators. The hybrid of the model lies in that it considers the static air-gap eccentricity and SISC at the same time. Different from other studies, the proposed model can manage not only the impact of the short-circuit degree, but also the influence of the short-circuit positions on the magnetic flux density (MFD), which is the basis to analyze electromechanical characteristics. The phase current and the electromagnetic torque (EMT) are selected in this paper as the representative of the electrical parameter and the mechanical parameter, respectively. Two-dimensional finite-element analysis and experimental studies confirm the validation of the proposed model. The model employs two primary factors, i.e., the short-circuit turn number nm and the position angle αsm, to reflect the short-circuit degree and the short-circuit position, respectively. By feeding these two factors as well as the detailed parameters of the generator into the model, the electromechanical feature data such as the phase current and EMT can be quickly assessed, and the developing tendency of the key MFD-based parameters can be conveniently predicted. Operation and maintenance costs of wind power plants represent a significant share of the total expenditure of a wind farm project. It is therefore vital to optimize maintenance activities in order to reduce costs while improving wind turbine reliability and availability. The induction generator is a major contributor to failure rates and downtime of wind turbines, where doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) are the dominant variable-speed technology employed. Actual data from operating wind turbines is seldom presented in the scientific literature. This paper analyzes two in-service DFIGs from wind turbines operating in a Spanish wind power plant. One of the generators under study reported excessive temperature on the rotor windings, while the other did not. In order to achieve a diagnosis for the reported excess of temperature, current signature analyses were performed on both machines. Fault-related frequency components were identified in the current spectra of the faulty machine, and were compared against the healthy one. A diagnosis was achieved for the faulty machine: Dynamic eccentricity caused by a rotor fault was identified as the cause of the excessive temperature in the rotor windings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, machine learning techniques have been applied to test the fault type in high-voltage circuit breakers (HVCBs). Most related research involves in improving the classification method for higher precision. Nevertheless, as an important part of the diagnosis, the feature information description of the vibration signal of an HVCB has been neglected; in particular, its diversity and significance are rarely considered in many real-world fault-diagnosis applications. Therefore, in this paper, a hybrid feature transformation is proposed to optimize the diagnosis performance for HVCB faults. First, we introduce a nonlinear feature mapping in the wavelet package time–frequency energy rate feature space based on random forest binary coding to extend the feature width. Then, a stacked autoencoder neural network is used for compressing the feature depth. Finally, five typical classifiers are applied in the hybrid feature space based on the experimental dataset. In this paper, an effective and robust algorithm is developed for on-board detection of battery anomaly caused by short circuit (SC). The proposed algorithm uses the battery-terminal voltage and current information measured using battery-management system during standard uses. The proposed method is purely a noninvasive, software-based solution and does not need any additional hardware. It extracts a set of designed features from the recorded data and stores their statistics as normal operating behavior for the initial five charge–discharge cycles. After the initial characterization of the battery, the likelihood of the features of being normal are evaluated for the subsequent cycles. If a feature is likely to be healthy, then the statistics for that feature get updated with the current value. However, if the feature is not likely to be healthy, then the battery is considered to be faulty with respect to that particular feature. If more than $\text{50}\%$ of the features identify the battery as faulty, then the overall battery status is classified as faulty. A mobile application is developed to log the smartphone's battery data during charging and discharging for testing. The faulty data are generated by connecting SC resistances of various values to the battery terminals, which emulates the SC condition in the battery. The data logged in the smartphones are transferred to a PC for analysis using the proposed algorithm. $\text{100}\%$ detection accuracy is achieved for SC resistance values less than $\text{200}\,\Omega$. This paper proposes a solution for reducing the ground leakage current in transformerless single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic converters. This is obtained with the introduction of an active common-mode filter able to compensate for variations of the output common-mode voltage of the power converter. The active common-mode filter is applied to a widespread and efficient full-bridge driven by a three-level pulse width modulation, allowing the power converter to operate with low ground leakage current and with an arbitrary power factor. After showing the desired voltage waveform for common-mode voltage compensation, this paper presents the design guidelines for the needed additional magnetic component together with the power loss considerations for all the devices added for the proposed solution. Experimental results show the performance of the proposed solution in terms of ground leakage current reduction, effectiveness of dead-time compensation, total harmonic distortion of the injected grid current, and power losses. This paper deals with a hybrid fault-tolerant converter topology. It is performed through the connection of a classical three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (3L-NPC) converter with a fourth three-level flying capacitor (3L-FC) leg. The 3L-FC leg actively balances the 3L-NPC neutral-point voltage. For normal operation mode, this paper proposes a mathematical design of the filter needed to connect these two different topologies. Experimentally, and thanks to the already existing decoupling capacitors of the 3L-NPC converter, this filter requires the addition of only one low size inductance. When one fault of the power switch of the 3L-NPC occurs, this paper proposes a hardware reconfiguration technique based on only two fuses and one thyristor per leg allows a safe postfault operation recovery. This is achieved thanks to a simple fault-detection method and a new technique that combines fault leg isolation and corresponding phase postfault connection to the neutral point. Also, a dedicated field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based control of the reconfigured converter is synthetized to ensure power system availability under fault operation mode. The converter fault-tolerant capabilities are addressed through simulation results and original overall experimental validations of the fault detection and isolation and the postfault operation steps, carried out on a 15-kW prototype converter. This paper presents the distinct advantages of stator fault detection using a novel radial flux sensing technique. Intensive research efforts in the past have been focused on the flux signature analysis as they have been more efficient compared to classical motor current signature analysis. In this paper, it is observed that a flux sensing simple internal observer coil (OC) is more succinct than external flux sensors. The proposed simplified, inexpensive technique has yet not been reported in the literature. The new results of root mean square (RMS), fundamental, third harmonic, and total harmonic distortion analysis of the voltage spectra of the OCs are found to exhibit variations in relation to the severity of interturn faults as compared to the healthy condition. The mathematical theory of the technique is provided and supported by an experimental validation. An experiment for confirming the performance of the proposed method was done on a 2.2-kW three-phase four-poles, 440-V squirrel-cage induction motor, increasing the fault level in steps from 1% to 15% combined with variations in load from no load to full load. This paper presents predictive current-mode control for a single-phase high-frequency transformer-isolated dual-active bridge dc-to-dc converter. The predictive control algorithm increases the bandwidth of the current loop of the converter which enables tracking of the current reference within one switching cycle. The paper further demonstrates that the application of the predictive control algorithm can remove transient dc offset from the current in high-frequency isolation transformer within one switching cycle. Direct control of the converter current protects the transformer from saturation even at transient conditions. The control algorithm has been implemented on an experimental setup and transient tests have been performed to validate controller performance. Since the predictive control algorithm is dependent on the measured value of the leakage inductance of the transformer, a compensator has been implemented to improve the parameter insensitivity of the proposed controller. The power synchronization control (PSC) has been increasingly used with voltage-source converters (VSCs) connected to the weak ac grid. This paper presents an in-depth analysis on the transient stability of the PSC-VSC by means of the phase portrait. It is revealed that the PSC-VSC will maintain synchronization with the grid as long as there are equilibrium points after the transient disturbance. In contrast, during grid faults without any equilibrium points, the critical-clearing angle (CCA) for the PSC-VSC is identified, which is found equal to the power angle of the unstable equilibrium point of the postfault operation. This fixed CCA facilitates the design of power system protection. Moreover, it is also found that the PSC-VSC can still resynchronize with the grid after around one cycle of oscillation, even if the fault-clearing angle is beyond the CCA. This paper proposes a dual-function dynamic voltage restorer (DFDVR) with fault current-limiting capability. The new topology can operate under different modes: the short-circuit fault current-limiting mode and the compensation mode for voltage fluctuation. Different functions of the DFDVR are achieved by controlling a brake chopper circuit and antiparallel thyristors. During fault conditions, the antiparallel thyristors are deactivated to protect the dc-side capacitor, and the duration of the on- and off-periods of the semiconductor switch in the brake chopper circuit is controlled to adjust fault current amplitudes. During voltage sags, the antiparallel thyristors are activated, and the brake chopper circuit is turned off by controlling the gate turn-off thyristor in the brake chopper circuit, thus making the DFDVR similar to a conventional DVR. The control scheme and optimal parameter selection of the DFDVR are provided. The design methodology of the DFDVR was verified through simulations performed using the PSCAD/EMTDC software. Incipient faults in electrical drives can corrupt overall performance of high-speed trains; however, they are difficult to discover because of their slight fault symptoms. By sufficiently exploiting the distribution information of incipient faults, this paper presents the reason why incipient faults cannot be detected by the existing fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) methods. Under principal component analysis (PCA) framework, we propose a new data-driven FDD method, which is named probability-relevant PCA (PRPCA), for electrical drives in high-speed trains. The salient strengths of the PRPCA-based FDD method are: 1) it can greatly improve the fault detectability; it is suitable for non-Gaussian electrical drives; 2) based on the improved fault detectability, it can achieve accurate fault diagnosis via support vector machine; and 3) it can be easily applied to electrical drives even if neither physical models or parameters nor expert knowledge of drive systems is given; and it is of highly computational efficiency that can meet requirements on the real-time FDD. In photovoltaic systems, dc–dc converters have been identified as one of the most critical and challenging subsystem in terms of failure rate. Thus, this paper proposes fault-tolerant operation of a two-stage buck/buck–boost converter under open-circuit switch failure. Remedial actions are efficient in any failure of one of the two switches of the converter. Here, a new unified approach is considered, for the overall fault-tolerant operation of the two stages of the converter. The fault-tolerant circuit we propose lies on performing redundancy by implementing the equivalent synchronous switch for the two main switches of the two stages, in offline mode. The fault-tolerant circuit results from the basic two-stage buck/buck-boost converter and its equivalent circuit with a synchronous switch, merged together to form the new dc–dc fault-tolerant circuit. Therefore, postfault operation at full power can also be performed. By using a switch fault management unit with reduced complexity, inserted between the control block and the switches, we have designed an unified, efficient, and optimized fault-tolerant control, suitable in both healthy and postfault operations. In this paper, a fast and practical method is proposed for open-circuit (OC) fault diagnosis (FD) in a three-phase quasi-Z-source inverter (q-ZSI). Compared with the existing fast OC FD techniques in three-phase voltage source inverters, this method is more cost-effective since no ultrafast processor or high-speed measurement is required. Additionally, the method is independent of the load condition. The proposed method is only applicable to Z-source family inverters and is based on observing the effect of shoot-through intervals on the system variables during switching periods. The proposed algorithm includes two consecutive stages: OC detection and fault location identification. When both stages of the OC FD algorithm are done, a redundant leg is activated and utilized instead of the failed leg. This paper proposes a method based on chaotic spread spectrum sequence for synchronous online diagnosis of intermittent faults for complex and cable. networks, such as the aircraft power system. The novelties of the proposed method include: 1) since chaotic spread spectrum signals are sensitive to initial values, the number of chaotic sequences are not limited and the proposed method is not limited by the number of cables under monitoring; 2) with the self-correlation characteristic and cross-correlation characteristic of chaotic sequence, the proposed method can be extended to online diagnosis of multiple cable intermittent faults; and 3) the signal source impedance amplification method is proposed for intermittent arc faults of multiple cables, which improves the reflection coefficient and increases the accuracy of online detection and location of intermittent arc faults. This paper proposes a novel approach for detection of stator short-circuit faults in three-phase induction motors. The method is based on two stages: feature extraction and classification by intelligent systems. First, mutual information is estimated from delayed stator current signals, which are used as inputs of C4.5 decision trees and multilayer perceptron neural networks in the second step. Several offline and online experimental tests are presented considering voltage unbalance, load torque variations, and 1% to 10% short-circuit levels. This paper proposes a hybrid modular multilevel dc–dc converter with dc fault ride-through capability. In each phase, the lower arm and shunt arm are composed of half-bridge submodules and full-bridge submodules (FBSMs) respectively, and the upper arm is composed of both types of submodules. The shunt arm eliminates the large ac filter required at the output of dc side. Moreover, it provides the bidirectional fault ride-through capability together with the FBSMs in the upper arm. Required kVA rating of the switches in the proposed topology is analyzed and compared to other topologies. With the optimal number of FBSMs in the upper and shunt arms designed by overmodulation, the proposed topology has a reduced kVA rating of switches, especially for the voltage conversion ratio above 0.54. A control strategy is presented to control the ac circulating current and balance the energy between the three arms. In this paper, a quantitative evaluation of the flux-switching permanent magnet (FSPM) machine system reliability is carried out based on the Markov model. The evaluation model of the permanent magnet machine system consists of six main functional components and their dominant failure modes are counted. The performance of the FSPM machine system under each fault is simulated and compared with the reliability criteria to judge the reliability state of the machine system. The Markov model is used to calculate the FSPM machine system reliability. The influence of machine phase number, stator core topology, and hybrid excitation method on the machine system reliability is investigated. Although the probability of occurrence of station internal ac grounding faults in modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based high-voltage direct-current systems is low, they may lead to severe consequences that should be considered when designing protection systems. This paper analyzes the characteristics of valve-side single-phase-to-ground (SPG) faults in three configurations of MMC systems. Fault responses for symmetrical monopole MMCs are first studied. Upper arm overvoltages and ac-side nonzero-crossing currents arising from SPG faults in asymmetrical and bipolar configurations are then investigated. DC grounding using an LR parallel circuit is employed to create current zero-crossings, which will enable the operation of grid-side ac circuit breakers. The theoretical analysis is verified through simulations performed in PSCAD/EMTDC, with simulation results and the theoretical analysis showing a good agreement. The excitation system plays a critical role in the operation of synchronous generators. An equipment failure could impact the voltage quality for smaller grids. Furthermore, it can lead to cost penalties and reduced production for the power plant owner. Recently, a new high-speed-response rotating brushless exciter was developed that employs remote control of the rotating thyristors on the generator shaft. This has led to new possibilities for improving the performance of brushless exciters. This contribution investigates the failure modes of a dual-star outer pole exciter that feeds two separate thyristor bridges connected in parallel during a normal operation. The possibility of a redundant postfault operation due to open-thyristor or open-phase faults is demonstrated using experimental testing. The system is compared with the fault performance of a conventional three-phase system. This paper includes the implementation and validation of a fault-predicting double d–q exciter model. In addition, the dangerous effects of a shorted-thyristor fault are investigated. A “skip firing” protection technique is briefly demonstrated for the fast isolation of such faults, yielding nondestructive postfault recovery and redundant failure-mode operation. This paper proposes a novel approach for the control of a permanent magnet synchronous machine with a quadruple three-phase star-connected winding configuration after a short-circuit (SC) fault in one voltage source inverter. The approach includes an adaption of the closed-loop current control that allows operation of the faulty unit to proceed without the need to adapt the reference currents. This allows an operation of the faulty drive with increased postfault mean torque. Additionally, a strategy for postfault torque error compensation is proposed, which can be used to reduce the torque ripple while the load distribution is better balanced. Results are respectively compared to the case when applying a symmetric SC to the faulty unit, which is the conventional strategy in case of a transistor SC fault. In order to adapt to the single power supply system of an aircraft, this paper proposes and investigates a novel dual-winding fault-tolerant (DF) motor drive system based on the redundancy bridge arm for aerospace applications. The proposed DF motor offers the advantages of magnetic isolation, physics isolation, thermal isolation, and small cogging torque ripple, inhibiting the short-circuit current and high fault tolerance. The proposed DF motor drive can adapt to the single power supply system of the aircraft, reduce the drive cost, and reduce the number of independent power sources and power switches. In addition, it can improve the power density, the reliability, and the utilization rate of the drive. At the same time, the drive system has stronger fault-tolerant ability, and it can achieve the fault-tolerant control for a one-phase-winding fault or a multiphase-winding fault. To realize the short-circuit fault diagnosis performance, the diagnosis and processing method of the short-circuit fault has been investigated. Then, to realize the short-circuit fault-tolerant performance, a novel space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) fault-tolerant control strategy based on the short-circuit fault diagnosis and processing method is proposed. Finally, the performances of the DF motor drive have been verified by experiments. In this paper, the application of wavelet transform to detect external leakage fault in hydraulic actuators is described. This paper also examines the isolation of this fault from actuator internal leakage in a multiple-fault environment. The pressure signal at either chamber of a laboratory-based hydraulic actuator, in response to a periodic step input, is decomposed into discrete wavelet coefficients. An index is calculated based on the root mean square (rms) value of level-four approximate coefficient of the pressure signal. This index is shown to be sensitive to external leakage. Furthermore, in our previous work, an index was calculated based on the rms value of the level-two detail coefficient for internal leakage fault detection. In this paper, we further show that these indices are independently sensitive to external and internal leakages. Thus, by inspecting them simultaneously, one cannot only identify external and internal leakages but also isolate them even when they occur together. Due to current sensor errors, tolerance of power switching devices, and asymmetry of PWM gating driving pulses, grid-connected inverters without isolation transformer usually have certain amount of dc components injected to the ac grid. Many efforts, such as using a blocking capacitor, a current dc component feedback control, and a voltage dc component feedback control have been introduced to try to suppress the dc injection to the grid. This paper proposes a novel control strategy of suppressing dc current injection to the grid for a three-phase inverter by accurately sensing the dc component of line voltages of three-phase inverter and adding a dc component control loop. A dc suppression control scheme is presented, and the suppression performance of the proposed dc rejection method is evaluated and compared with the traditional method.
