A multi-level boost topology based on a flying capacitor is compared in this work with the hybrid, multi-level, partial power processing topology already presented in the literature for use as a highly efficient and compact dc/dc stage in 1500-V, two-stage, grid-connected PV systems. Different variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology are analyzed and compared in terms of losses, volume and complexity. Full multivariable optimization is conducted for the multi-level boost topology with different number of levels and for all the analyzed variations of the resonant stage of the hybrid topology. Appropriately rated new classes of 650-V and 900-V WBG devices are included in the optimization algorithm. It is concluded that due to the dominant conduction losses and gap in the voltage rating of the commercially available WBG devices between 650V and 200V, increase of the number of levels over 4 leads to the deteriorated loss and volume performances. All the analysis related to the resonant stage of the hybrid topology is confirmed by detailed and comprehensive measurements of two prototypes of 4kW of nominal and 7kW of maximal power. Additionally, all the loss models applied in the optimization algorithms presented in this paper are confirmed by detailed measurements, thermal calibration and finite element thermal simulations of the wide bandgap devices and inductor designs employed in this work. With the rapid development of photovoltaic and fuel cell stacks, high voltage gain converters are urgently demanded. Conventional boost is limited by the exaggerated duty cycle, it is impossible to obtain a high voltage gain while ensuring efficiency. Therefore, a zero-voltage switching (ZVS)-modified SEPIC converter that combines a voltage multiplier cell with traditional SEPIC is proposed in this paper. With detailed parameters design process, this presented converter works at zero voltage switching (ZVS), while obtaining high voltage gain without extremely high duty cycle. Besides, voltage stress is also reduced and low-voltage component with lower parasitic parameters can be used, thus efficiency is maintained. In order to further improve the power density, an integrated inductor scheme is adopted in this paper without changing intrinsic working states of the two inductors. A high-frequency high voltage gain discontinuous conduction mode coupled-inductor boost LED driver based on planar component is presented in this paper. GaN switch is adopted with lower conducting resistance and higher switching speed. Zero voltage switching (ZVS) is achieved at the same time to reduce high switching loss caused by high switching frequency. Compared with the previous work, the voltage gain is higher and efficiency is higher because of ZVS. This paper focuses on high efficiency; therefore, resonant gate driver is adopted and efficiency is increased by 0.6%. In terms of the coupled-inductor, planar component is used and parameter optimization is also proposed to realize lower loss, including wingding loss and fringing loss caused by the air gap. A 500 kHz 36 W prototype has been designed to demonstrate theoretical analysis. In addition, comparison of drive loss between the resonant gate driver used in this paper and conventional driver implemented by Si8271 is made, revealing advantages of the resonant driver. This paper presents a single-stage nonisolated switched capacitor ac–dc converter for power-factor correction (PFC). This converter features reduced passive components, single switch, transformerless high voltage gain, and improves the power factor, reduces total harmonic distortion, and voltage stress across the switch. The peak current mode with a dynamic resonant perturbation scheme compensates the subharmonics that exist at zero crossing of the source current is implemented for PFC. In this paper, an electric vehicle (EV) battery charger with interleaved Landsman converter (ILC) followed by a flyback converter, is designed and evaluated for improved power quality (PQ) charging of battery. A built-in wave-shaping is obtained at the charger front-end due to improved PQ characteristics of ILC. This PFC converter consists of two Landsman converter cells, which are designed in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to share the input and output currents. The current sharing at input results into lower input current ripple as well as peak current stress through the switch, is reduced. This, further improves the input current harmonics profile. Moreover, the reduced output voltage ripple gives reduced rms current in the output capacitor. A phase shift PWM scheme (PSPWM) is used for ILC and the duty cycle for the switches is selected below 50%. This allows the ripple cancellation at line and load sides. The interleaving at PFC stage as well as DCM based design ensures a low cost charging solution as compared to the conventional Landsman converter (CLC) based chargers in this power range. This paper presents a new configuration of high gain (HG) single ended primary inductor converter (SEPIC) with a ripple-free input current to maximize the efficiency of the PV panel for standalone water pumping system (WPS). The ripple eliminating circuit combined with the HG SEPIC converter to achieve reduced ripples in photovoltaic (PV) current is independent to the duty cycle control and hence, it can be easily integrated to the main power circuit of configuration. This circuit does not need any active switches, control, or drive circuit for its execution. The ripple eliminating circuit yields a complete removal of the electrolytic capacitor connected across the PV array and significantly reduces the inductance of the HG SEPIC converter. It also improves the response and power density of the dc–dc converter. The large gain of dc–dc converter enables the use of low-voltage PV panel and minimizes the partial shading and parasitic capacitance effects on PV array source. Due to the substantial compatibility between natural characteristics of switched reluctance motor (SRM) drive and WPS, a four-phase SRM drive is utilized in the proposed scheme. In addition, a single current sensor based maximum power point tracking technique is utilized in the proposed system, which helps to reduce the cost and improve the accuracy of the overall system. A modular quasi-resonant bidirectional dc–dc converter composed of half-bridge gallium nitride modules (HBGM) with reduced switch voltage stress is proposed in this paper. By using an auxiliary capacitor, a resonant circuit is formed to shape the current and voltage so that zero-voltage switching at turn-on instant is achieved. Since the switching loss dominates the power losses in a high-frequency dc–dc converter, the soft-switching performance leads to a noticeable reduction in the total loss; so, the operating temperature will decrease, and consequently, size of the heatsink will be reduced. The proposed circuit takes advantage of enhancement-mode gallium nitride (eGaN) switches regarding their small on-resistance RDS(on), low gate charge, and fast switching speed to improve both efficiency and power density. The main performance issue of adopting GaN switches in a bidirectional dc–dc converter is the high voltage stress of GaN devices, which is handled by connecting the HBGM in the active-clamped stacked configuration, as well as optimizing printed circuit board layout design. DC microgrid is gaining attraction and a recent trend in distribution power generation system due to penetration of renewables (especially photovoltaic or fuel cell). In this paper, a new triple-switch-triple-mode high step-up converter (TSTM-HS converter) is presented for dc microgrid applications. In the proposed converter, voltage lift technique is employed and range of duty cycle is extended by incorporating an additional switch in converter circuitry. By doing this, high voltage conversion ratio is achieved without using a transformer, coupled inductor, and multiple stages of switched capacitors. Moreover, the TSTM-HS converter operated in three modes with two types of the duty cycles to achieve low to high voltage conversion without using high duty cycle for each switch. The effects of difference in the inductance values on the regulation and operating behavior of the TSTM-HS converter are discussed. The continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode characteristics of the TSTM-HS converter are discussed in detail with steady-state analysis and boundary condition. The comparison is provided to highlight the benefits of the TSTM-HS converter. The selection of semiconductor devices and the design of reactive components are discussed for the TSTM-HS converter. An improved bridgeless (BL) Cuk converter-based electric vehicle (EV) battery charger with high power factor and increased efficiency is designed and developed in this paper. It provides low cost and high-power-density-based charging solution for the EV. This charger incorporates less number of devices operating over one switching cycle, which reduces the additional conduction loss incurred by a diode bridge rectifier of the conventional charger. Hence, it improves the charger's efficiency. The added advantage of the proposed topology is that the unwanted capacitive coupling loop is removed, as well as the unwanted conduction through the body diode of the inactive switch in the previously developed BL Cuk converter is avoided. This significantly improves the charger's efficiency. For the constant current and constant voltage charging, the commands are synchronized by a flyback converter. The proposed charger draws a sinusoidal current from ac mains and the total harmonic distortion in the supply current is reduced to the limits specified by the IEC 61000-3-2 guidelines. This paper proposes a novel single-switch dc/dc converter for the future renewable electric energy delivery and management system to implement the distributed renewable energy resources (DRER). The DRER is responsible for the maximum power point tracking of the photovoltaic panel (PV) module and also for the control of central energy storage device. Due to the characteristics of the PV module and the dc-bus, the single power stage must provide low current ripple in the input and output terminals, must operate with output current and voltage regulation, and present a high-voltage conversion ratio. To achieve such features, this paper proposes a novel integrated Boost–Zeta converter. To avoid a complex modeling and control, we propose a disaggregation concept for this. This paper introduces a three-phase grid-connected inverter for commercial-scale photovoltaic systems. The circuit topology combines an ac-inductor-less active bridge with a parallel-connected pulsewidth modulation inverter acting as an instantaneous reactive power compensator. The active bridge, called a 120° conduction inverter, operates at a switching frequency equal to the grid frequency and outputs a 120° rectangular current, while the compensator eliminates the harmonic currents included in the rectangular current. The main advantage of this strategy is the reduction in size of the required ac inductor by a factor of 4, as well as the reduction of power losses in the switching devices. The theoretical analysis clearly shows that the compensator can synthesize a sinusoidal output current by controlling only instantaneous reactive power, thus eliminating the need for electrolytic capacitors. A 5-kW experimental setup validates the operating principle and the control method of the proposed inverter and exhibits an inverter efficiency as high as 99.2% with Si superjunction mosfets. A switching-capacitor-based buck–boost converter (with common ground) for point of load applications is proposed in this paper. It is capable of operating in stand-alone buck or boost mode in addition to its primary operation of performing the buck–boost conversion. The striking feature of the proposed converter is low source current ripple content irrespective of its mode of operation (buck–boost, buck, or boost). First, feasible pulsewidth modulation schemes for the proposed converter are identified and thereafter the corresponding circuit performance analysis, steady-state analysis, and state-space modelling is established. Through steady-state analysis, voltage gain expressions are formulated and equations defining L-C components are derived in terms of their ripple quantities. The state-space models are used to formulate small-signal analysis and to obtain the relevant transfer functions required in the controller design. A voltage-mode/current-mode controller is designed, with a tradeoff in bandwidth, to control the proposed converter and transit it from buck to boost mode or vice versa seamlessly. A 30–55 W, 100 kHz, prototype point of load converter with 36-V input dc source is built to supply power at constant load voltage of either 48 or 28 V. In this paper, a fifth-order boost point-of-load converter is developed by cascading a modified fourth-order boost converter with a combination of L–C and diode. This topology has the following salient features: Single-switch topology, common ground between source and load, low-voltage stress across intermediate capacitors, and voltage gain same as other reported fifth-order boost converters with no common ground. Steady-state and dynamic analyses demonstrate the proposed converter's boosting feature and dynamic performance, respectively. A contoured robust Bode plot methodology is employed to design the robust voltage-mode controller to ensure load voltage regulation in the presence of uncertainties. The necessary and sufficient conditions under which the designed controller guarantees the load voltage regulation and robust stability are obtained. A step-by-step robust controller design procedure is outlined. The salient features of the proposed converter and its robust performance are studied analytically, using the MATLAB platform, and validated experimentally on a 60-W prototype module. This paper presents a dual output power factor correction (PFC) converter for switched reluctance motor (SRM) drives. Here, a modified single-ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) is proposed for a wide range of speed control and to achieve PFC at ac mains. The switching frequency of the converter is considered to be 20 kHz. The converter is designed to operate in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) of operation, which reduces the size of the output inductor. The DCM mode to obtain PFC also reduces the sensor requirement as compared to the continuous conduction mode (CCM), where two voltage sensors and one current sensor add to the drive cost. The drive is proposed for universal ac mains (90–270 V ac). Simulated and experimental results are demonstrated to validate the performance of the drive during different operating conditions. Flyback/forward derived power converters offer operational simplicity, but require active clamping circuits to reduce switch voltage stress and improve the converter efficiency. This paper presents an active clamping circuit technique, which additionally ensures enhancement in the converter voltage gain. This is enabled by the proposed auxiliary circuit, which introduces a charged capacitor in series with the primary source during the energizing interval. Two circuits are designed on this principle, and design and operation of both are presented for discontinuous conduction modes. It is shown that the voltage gain of these circuits increases with increase in the leakage inductance, which is an improvement over existing converters. Also, in one circuit primary (secondary) winding, rms current is similar to (lower than) that in a typical ideal flyback converter, leading to improvement in power density. Pollution problems caused by fossil fuels have led to more investigations on renewable energy systems. Photovoltaic cells and fuel cells output low-level voltage than required; therefore, high gain dc–dc converters are used to boost this low voltage. The Z-source converter can be employed as dc–dc converter to boost the photovoltaic panel voltages. It also offers other advantages, such as clamped switched voltage, high voltage gain, isolation of energy source from the load, and positive polarity for output voltage; therefore, this is a good choice for high step-up applications. This paper presents analysis of a novel high step-up Z-source based dc–dc converter that has higher voltage gain than the Z-source converter. Furthermore, high efficiency, low device voltage stress, and wide voltage gain range make it a good candidate for photovoltaic and high voltage step-up applications. This paper proposes a multilevel flying capacitor dc/dc boost converter (FCBC) with a small capacitance of the flying capacitor for the reduction of converter size. In this paper, the design methods for the boost inductor and the flying capacitor in the n-level FCBC are principally and experimentally confirmed. Furthermore, the boost inductor is designed based on maximum product of voltage-time, regardless the number of level. Meanwhile, the minimum capacitance of the flying capacitor is designed based on the maximum switching device voltage stress, regardless of the output voltage ripple influences. Moreover, the achieved maximum efficiency of the designed three-level FCBC is 98.5% at the output power of 1 kW. Finally, the effectiveness of small capacitances of the flying capacitor in the three-level and five-level FCBCs is analyzed. The characteristics of the distorted voltage across the input voltage source and the boost inductor, and the distorted current to the output side (output capacitor and load) are investigated with several capacitances of the flying capacitors in the three-level and five-level FCBCs. As a result, it is experimentally confirmed that the distorted voltage is drastically reduced by increasing the number of level. Besides, the distorted current is almost the same although the number of level is increased. Therefore, based on the experimental results, it is shown that small capacitance of the flying capacitor can be used in the n-level FCBC without compromising the stability of converter operation. Parallel ac-link universal power converters are a relatively new class of power converters that can be configured as dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, and ac–ac. These converters are extensions of a buck–boost converter in which the current of the inductor is alternating and the input and output can have any number of phases with any forms, voltage amplitude, or frequency. By placing a small capacitor in parallel with the link inductor, all the switches can benefit from soft switching. The main limitation of the parallel ac-link universal power converter is its large number of switches. A three-phase ac–ac configuration requires 24 unidirectional switches. This paper proposes two topologies based on the parallel ac-link universal power converters that significantly reduce the number of switches. One of the proposed topologies reduces the number of switches in a three-phase ac–ac configuration to 16. The other topology reduces the number of switches to 10. The latter can offer galvanic isolation with only a single-phase high-frequency transformer. This paper proposes a single-stage single-switch light-emitting diode (LED) driver that integrates a buck–boost circuit with a Class-E resonant converter by sharing single-switch device. The buck–boost circuit, working as a power-factor correction (PFC) stage, operates in the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) to shape the input current. The Class-E converter steps down the voltage to drive the LED. For specific component parameters, the Class-E converter can achieve soft-switching on the power switch and two rectifier diodes, and reduce switch losses at high frequencies. Electrolytic capacitors are used in the proposed converter to achieve a lower cost, but the system reliability decreases. To overcome this disadvantage, film capacitors can be used, but the current ripple increases. Neglecting the cost, multilayered film capacitors are the best option, if higher reliability and lower current ripple are required. A dual active bridge (DAB) converter promises high power density. The highest power transfer can be achieved by phase shift modulation inside the zero-voltage switching boundaries. This paper analyzes the transients of DAB commutation. Although commutation has been previously analyzed for DAB with the linear turn-off snubbers, in today's industries, the output capacitors of the switches are utilized as the snubberless approach. The presence of these time-variant capacitors leads to nonlinear equations. This paper applies a piecewise linear model for analyzing the commutation of the ac-link current into the switches. A single-phase bridgeless Cuk ac/dc power factor correction (PFC) rectifier with positive output voltage is proposed in this paper. For low output voltage product applications, the rectifier is designed to convert high input voltage to low output voltage. Due to no bridge diodes required and thus decreased input conduction losses, the proposed rectifier efficiency can be improved. The proposed rectifier operates in discontinuous conduction mode, and the current-loop circuit is hence not needed. In addition, only a single switch is used in the rectifier to simplify the control circuit design. A simple translation method to have the positive output voltage in the Cuk converter is presented in the rectifier to reduce the component counts and the cost. The operational principles, steady-state analysis, and design procedure of the proposed rectifier are addressed in detail in this paper. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a 150-W rated prototype circuit with input of 90–130 Vrms, 60 Hz, and output of 48 Vdc have verified the validity of the proposed rectifier. This paper proposes a novel bidirectional inverter, named series ac-link inverter. This three-phase inverter belongs to a new class of partial resonant ac-link converters in which the link is formed by a series ac inductor/capacitor (LC) pair having low reactive ratings. The input and output of this converter can be either dc, ac, single-phase, or multiphase. Therefore, they can appear as dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, and ac–ac configurations. In all of these configurations, the ac capacitor is the main energy-storage element, and the inductor is merely added to facilitate the zero-current turnoff of the switches and their soft turn-on. Due to the zero-current turnoff of the switches in the proposed converter, the use of SCRs with natural commutation is possible as well. Since the current and voltage of the link are both alternating, no bulky dc-electrolytic capacitors are required in this converter. This paper mainly focuses on bidirectional dc to three-phase ac conversion. This single-stage inverter can step up or step down the voltage in a wide range. If galvanic isolation is required a single-phase high-frequency transformer can be added to the link. In the proposed inverter, the power can flow in both directions, and therefore, it is an excellent candidate for battery-utility interface and electric vehicle applications. This paper proposes a new circuit configuration and a control scheme for a single-phase current-source inverter with a power decoupling circuit which is called as the active buffer. The proposed inverter achieves a low-dc-input voltage ripple and also provides a sinusoidal current that can achieve unity power factor, without large passive components in the dc bus such as smoothing inductors and electrolytic capacitors. These components are conventionally required in order to decouple the power pulsation caused by the single-phase power source. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed inverter are demonstrated experimentally. From the experimental results, the input voltage ripple is 8.87%, and the output current total harmonic distortion is 4.24%. In addition, an output power factor of 99% and a maximum efficiency of 94.9% are obtained. Finally, it is confirmed that the maximum power densities of the conventional circuit and the proposed circuit are 2.75 kW/L at the switching frequency of 70 kHz and 4.86 kW/L at the switching frequency of 80 kHz, respectively. Soft-switching ac-link universal power converters, also called partial resonant converters and ac-link buck–boost converters, have received noticeable attention during the last few years. In these converters, each of the inputs and outputs can be dc, single-phase ac, or multiphase ac; therefore, they can be used for dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, or ac–ac power conversion systems. The soft-switching ac-link universal power converters are compact, reliable, and expected to offer longer lifetime compared with the other types of converters. However, they require more switches, which make the control process more involved. The sparse ac-link buck–boost converters were proposed to partially solve this problem. The sparse configuration reduces the number of switches from 24 to 20 in a three-phase ac–ac configuration. This paper proposes a modified configuration, which further reduces the number of switches without changing the principles of operation. This converter, which is named ultrasparse ac-link buck–boost converter, reduces the number of switches from 24 to 16, in a three-phase ac-to-ac case, and from 20 to 10, in a dc-to-three-phase-ac configuration. The proposed converter is applicable to systems with unidirectional flow of power, such as PV and wind power generation systems. This converter is expected to offer higher reliability compared with the original converter and higher reliability and efficiency compared with the sparse configuration. Another important feature of this configuration is that it can be fabricated by insulated-gate bipolar transistor modules, which are more compact and more cost effective compared with discrete devices. This paper presents the principles of the operation of this configuration and compares the efficiency, the failure rate, and the current rating of the switches in the ultrasparse, sparse, and original configurations. This paper presents a novel dc–dc converter configuration, which successfully integrates two technologies, including a switched capacitor and a switched coupled inductor, into one converter. By adopting a coupled inductor to charge a switched capacitor, the voltage gain can be effectively increased, and the turns ratio of the coupled inductor can be also reduced. Not only lower conduction losses but also higher power conversion efficiency is benefited from a lower part count and lower turns ratios. The proposed converter is simply composed of six components, which can be further derived to varied converters for different purposes, such as a bidirectional converter. The operating principle and steady-state analysis are discussed in this paper. A 250-W laboratory hardware prototype is completed and verified. The voltage gain is up to 11. This paper proposes a single-stage high-power-factor (HPF) LED driver with coupled inductors for street-lighting applications. The presented LED driver integrates a dual buck–boost power-factor-correction (PFC) ac–dc converter with coupled inductors and a half-bridge-type $LLC$ dc–dc resonant converter into a single-stage-conversion circuit topology. The coupled inductors inside the dual buck–boost converter subcircuit are designed to be operated in the discontinuous-conduction mode for obtaining high power-factor (PF). The half-bridge-type $LLC$ resonant converter is designed for achieving soft-switching on two power switches and output rectifier diodes, in order to reduce their switching losses. This paper develops and implements a cost-effective driver for powering a 144-W-rated LED street-lighting module with input utility-line voltage ranging from 100 to 120 V. This paper reports an elegant approach to address two major challenges of transformerless grid-connected microinverters, common-mode earth leakage current and double-frequency power pulsation across the photovoltaic (PV) terminal. The proposed solution uses an embedded decoupling capacitor in a doubly grounded boost–buck ( $\acute{\mathrm{C}}$ uk) derived topology. An intelligent switching scheme ensures that a large swing of the decoupling capacitor voltage is easily accommodated. Thus, film capacitors can be used instead of electrolytic capacitors, which helps increase equipment lifetime. In this paper, a modified single-phase current source inverter (CSI) with improved multiloop control is proposed for a transformerless grid–photovoltaic interface application. A split capacitor arrangement with the middle point connected to the grid neutral and a common mode choke are used to modify the conventional CSI structure to attenuate the ground leakage current. The proposed control method permits the use of reduced value of dc side inductor by maintaining the quality of the grid current as if a high value of input inductor is used. Furthermore, virtual resistance damping is incorporated in the control loop to reduce the effect of LC resonance without compromising the efficiency, thus proving the feasibility of using CSI for the grid interface. Rigorous study, analysis, and validation of the modified CSI structure with the proposed control technique are carried out with exhaustive simulations and experiments. This paper proposes a new high-gain soft-switching dc–dc topology based on a switched inductor boost converter (SIBC). A conventional SIBC as a high gain boost topology has the issues of high conduction loss in switching diodes and high switching loss in the main switches. Also, it has severe electromagnetic interference (EMI) issue due to high-frequency ringing formed by parasitic inductance and diode junction capacitors. The new topology is derived with the objective of achieving zero voltage switching (ZVS) turn on of the main switch. Instead of adding extra active clamp zero voltage transition (ZVT) path at the switching node, the proposed topology augments the auxiliary ZVT path to the switching diode path. This is achieved by replacing the switching diodes with synchronous switches. The new topology can achieve soft switching for all the switches and alleviate the EMI issue. All the diodes achieve zero current switching (ZCS) turn off without reverse recovery. Auxiliary switches have ZCS turn on and ZVS turn off, and the main switches have ZVS turn on. The soft-switching SIBC also reduces the conduction loss in the switching diodes. A numerical simulation in PLECS and a prototype hardware are built corresponding to a micro-inverter application with 100 kHz switching frequency. In this paper, a hybrid bidirectional dc–dc converter is presented, which is a combination of a switched-capacitor converter and an inductor-based converter with low component counts. The input current ripple and peak charging current are small with the help of the inductor. The proposed converter is applicable in the battery charge/discharge systems, such as the distributed renewable energy systems, battery equalizer, auxiliary power supplies, traction drive system, and dual-voltage automotive systems based in new electrical architecture concept, where common ground is not required and within the voltage-gain range of 2–6. A comprehensive analysis of the steady-state operation, small-signal model, and component stress is given. The comparison with an alternative topology shows the advantages of low component counts, low total capacitor voltage stress, low inductor current, and low total active switch stress for the 42/14 V voltage level. This paper presents a single-stage light-emitting diode (LED) driver based on a bridgeless power factor correction (PFC) converter and a half-bridge CLCL resonant converter for street lighting applications. The proposed single-stage topology integrates the PFC converter and the CLCL resonant converter by sharing active power switches. The bridgeless PFC converter adopts two buck–boost circuits operating in discontinuous-conduction mode to achieve input-current shaping. It uses two diodes instead of a rectifier bridge to reduce the power loss caused by the diodes. Owing to its superior soft-switching characteristics, the CLCL resonant converter is used. The proposed LED driver has superior features, such as high efficiency, near unity power factor, low total harmonic distortion, and relatively few diodes. This paper presents a variable switching point predictive current control (VSP $^2$CC) for the quasi-Z-source inverter (qZSI). The proposed VSP $^2$CC aims to remove the output current error on the ac side, as well as the inductor current and capacitor voltage errors of the quasi-Z-source network on the dc side of the converter. Unlike the previously presented direct model predictive control (MPC) strategies for the qZSI, the proposed control scheme can directly apply the switching signals not only at the discrete time instants, but at any time instant within the sampling interval. Consequently, the shoot-through state can be applied for a shorter time than the sampling interval, resulting in lower output and inductor currents ripples. Experimental results based on field programmable gate array are provided to verify the effectiveness of the introduced control method. A trend for low-power conversion system is to integrate every component to a single chip. Magnetic component has been the key to determine the power density of the integrated switching power converter. In this paper, a hybrid resonant buck-type converter with an ultracompact custom-designed coupled inductor is presented for low-power integrated on-chip applications. This converter achieves zero-voltage switching for the high-side switch and near zero-voltage zero-current switching for low-side and auxiliary switches. The soft-switching condition allows the circuit operating at high switching frequencies. An ultracompact planar coupled inductor with a dimension of 5.25 mm × 1.95 mm × 3.86 mm is designed and customized for future integrated on-chip applications. The high-power density of this magnetics component is achieved by high switching frequency and optimized printed circuit board (PCB) windings design. A hardware prototype with 24 to 60-V input and 3.3 to 5-V, 3-A output operating at 2–3 MHz is presented to verify the circuit operation. A new zero-voltage switching full-bridge dc–dc converter for battery charging is proposed in this paper. The proposed isolated dc–dc converter is used for the dc–dc conversion stage of the electric vehicle charger. The primary switches in dc–dc converter turn-on at zero voltage over the battery-charging range with the help of passive auxiliary circuit. The diode clamping circuit on the primary side minimizes the severity of voltage spikes across the secondary rectifier diodes, which are commonly present in conventional full-bridge dc–dc converters. The main switches are controlled with an asymmetrical pulse-width modulation (APWM) technique resulting in higher efficiency. APWM reduces the current stress of the main switches and the circulating losses compared with the conventional phase-shift modulation method by controlling the auxiliary inductor current over the entire operating range of the proposed converter. In this paper, a robust voltage control is designed for a floating interleaved boost converter with high voltage gain. The proposed controller has an inner loop based on super-twisting sliding mode algorithm, which has continuous control signal and the sliding surface is defined for the inductor current. The reference current value is generated by active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) algorithm in the outer loop, based on the output voltage error. The stability of the sliding mode inner loop and the ADRC outer loop are proven using Lyapunov stability theorem and Routh–Hurwitz criteria, respectively. This paper aims at the design and development of an efficient photovoltaic (PV) array powered switched reluctance motor (SRM) driven pump utilizing a dual supply buck–boost converter. The buck–boost converter, having dual supply, is used as an intermediate dc–dc power conditioning stage between PV array and SRM-pump. To optimize the power of the PV array and to provide soft starting to the SRM drive are the two major concerns of this converter. It also provides voltage balancing of split capacitors, owing to which there is considerable reduction in torque ripple and the required size of it. Moreover, the continuous conduction mode operation of dual supply dc–dc converter minimizes current and voltage stresses on converter indices and reduced electromagnetic interference. The electronic commutation of the SRM drive at fundamental frequency offers reduced switching losses in the midpoint converter and, therefore, considerable enhancement in the efficiency of the proposed system. A dwell angle self-starting control algorithm for a four-phase 8/6 SRM is also implemented in the proposed system. Boost-derived hybrid converter (BDHC) is a single-stage converter that produces both dc and ac output voltages. The operation of BDHC under continuous conduction mode is satisfactory. However, the nonzero discontinuous conduction mode (NZ-DCM) and standalone ac operation restrict the stable operation of the converter. To mitigate these limitations, modified BDHC (MBDHC) is proposed in this paper. The main idea behind these changes is to redeem NZ-DCM by forced continuous conduction mode (FCM). The adverse effect of NZ-DCM in a BDHC is analyzed in terms of ac output voltage total harmonic distortion, and dc output voltage ripple. This analysis is further extended for MBDHC to highlight the benefits of FCM. Moreover, for hybrid loads, the efficiency of MBDHC is compared with its counterpart BDHC and cascaded boost inverter. This paper discusses a new circuit configuration and a new control method for a single-phase ac–dc converter with power factor (P.F.) correction and a power pulsation decoupling function. The proposed converter can achieve low total harmonic distortion (THD) on the input current and the power pulsation decoupling function between the input and output sides, which allows low output voltage ripple even on a small output energy buffer at the same time using an active buffer. Therefore, the proposed converter does not require large smoothing capacitors or large smoothing inductors. The buffering energy is stored by a small capacitor, which controls the variation of the capacitor voltage through the active buffer. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed converter are investigated experimentally. The experimental results reveal that the input current THD is 1.44%, the rate of the output voltage ripple is 6.33%, and the input P.F. is over 99%. For the high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) power transmission system of offshore wind power, dc/dc converters are the potential solution to collect the power generated by off-shore wind farms to HVDC terminals. The converters operate with high-voltage gain, high efficiency, and fault tolerance over a wide range of operating conditions. In this paper, an isolated ultrahigh step-up dc/dc converter with a scalable modular structure is proposed for HVDC offshore wind power collection. A flyback-forward converter is employed as the power cell to form the expandable electrically isolated modular dc/dc converter. The duty ratio and phase-shift angle control are also developed for the proposed converter. Fault-tolerant characteristics of the converter are illustrated through the redundancy operation and fault-ride-through tests. Redundancy operation is designed to maintain high operation efficiency of the converters and fault-ride-through operation improves the converter reliability under harsh operating conditions. Analytical studies are carried out, and a 750-W prototype with three modular cells is built and experimentally tested to verify the performance of the proposed modular dc/dc converter. In this paper for power factor correction (PFC), a modified Landsman converter is introduced. The application is targeted for high-brightness (HB) projection application with brightness control for HB red–green–blue (HB-RGB) light-emitting diode (LED). A pulse-width modulation (PWM) technique is used for intensity control to achieve brightness control of the LED driver. The proposed PFC converter is used to feed a dual output flyback dc–dc converter that supplies power to the forced cooling unit and the LED module with galvanic isolation. The brightness control of LED is performed by synchronous buck converter. The modified Landsman converter operates in discontinuous output inductor current mode for PFC at universal ac mains. A prototype of the proposed LED driver is experimentally verified. The performance of proposed driver is evaluated at full and light-load condition for universal ac mains (90–265 V) over a full range of brightness. In order to solve the problems caused by the pulsating current ripple of switching-mode power converters, a passive pulsating ripple canceling circuit (PPRCC) is proposed in this paper. The features of the proposed PPRCC include simple, modular structure, and high degree of design flexibility. By integrating the proposed PPRCC, an input current ripple-free flyback-type converter is adopted and analyzed as an example because of its comprehensive utilization in small power rating commercial products. In addition, the switch voltage spike of flyback converter can be suppressed by integrating the proposed PPRCC without using snubbers, it turns out that the efficiency can be further improved. The corresponding operating principle, steady-state analysis, and zero ripple design criteria of the proposed PPRCC are provided. Finally, a 100 W laboratory prototype is constructed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed principle. Experimental results show that the resulting peak-to-peak input current ripple is reduced by 96% and nearly 0.5% and 1.7% improvement in efficiency can be achieved by the proposed PPRCC, at 80 W and 100 W load conditions, respectively. In LLC-based onboard battery charging architectures used in plug-in electric vehicles (PEV), the dc link voltage can be actively regulated to follow the battery pack voltage so that the LLC converter can operate in proximity of resonant frequency and achieve high efficiencies over the wide range of battery pack voltage. However, conventional boost-type power factor correction (PFC) converters are unable to provide ultrawide dc link voltages since their output voltages should always be larger than their input voltages. This paper proposes a Silicon Carbide (SiC)-based onboard PEV charger using single-ended primary-inductor converter (SEPIC) PFC converter followed by an isolated LLC resonant converter. With the proposed charger architecture, the SEPIC PFC converter is able to provide an ultrawide range for dc link voltage, and consequently enhance the efficiency of the LLC stage by ensuring operation in proximity of resonant frequency. A 1-kW SiC-based prototype is designed to validate the proposed idea. The experimental result shows that the SEPIC PFC converter achieves unity power factor, 2.72% total harmonic distortion, and 95.3% peak conversion efficiency. The LLC converter achieves 97.1% peak efficiency and always demonstrates a very high efficiency across the ultrawide dc-link voltage range. In this paper, the switching cell concept is extended to isolated ac–ac converters, and a highly reliable double step-down ac–ac converter is proposed with high-frequency transformer (HFT) isolation. By using the switching cell structure and coupled inductors, the proposed converter has no commutation problem as it is immune from both short-circuit and open-circuit problems, even when all the switches are turned on or turned off, simultaneously. Therefore, it does not require pulse width modulation dead times along with bulky and lossy RC snubbers or voltage-sensing circuitry to implement soft-commutation strategies, resulting in high reliability and high quality output waveforms. The HFT in the proposed converter provides electrical isolation and safety which is required in applications such as dynamic voltage restorer (DVR), solid-state transformer (SST), etc., without the need for external bulky line frequency transformer. Moreover, all the passive components experience twice the switching frequency; therefore, their size can be reduced. The proposed converter is very suitable for application as DVR, to compensate both voltage sags and swells, owing to its ability to provide both inverting and noninverting outputs. A detailed theoretical analysis and operation of the proposed ac–ac converter are provided, and its applications as DVR and SST are also discussed. This paper identifies the characteristics of a current source inverter operating in discontinuous conduction mode, and proposes a new multiobjective pulse-width modulation (PWM) method to mitigate voltage boosting and harmonic distortion effects. The method takes into account load impedance effects. Controls are also developed to enable transition between the multiobjective PWM method and conventional PWM as the current source inverter operates in discontinuous and continuous modes of operation. Current sharing controller/functionality is commonly utilized for multiphase converters to achieve current balancing between converter phases. Conventional current sharing control schemes generally require sensing the current of each phase, leading to increased size and cost in addition to issues associated with current sensing inaccuracies. A sensorless current sharing control scheme is proposed in this paper that utilizes the difference between the input capacitor voltage ripple values to indicate the phases' current distribution status. The duty-cycle value of each phase is autotuned in a way to minimize the difference between the input capacitor voltage ripple values based on a single voltage sensing point, which results in equal current sharing with no need for current sensing. In addition, the input capacitor voltage ripple sensing does not need to be very accurate, and the sinusoidal frequency component of interest of the ripple is obtained by using a low-cost bandpass filter for improved ripple sensing resolution and noise immunity. This paper proposes a current-fed non-isolated soft-switching bidirectional dc/dc converter for interfacing energy storage to dc microgrid. The proposed converter employs a current-fed half-bridge boost converter at front-end followed by an LCL resonant circuit to aid in soft-switching of semiconductor devices. A voltage doubler at output is selected to enhance the gain by $2 \times $. The LCL resonant circuit also adds a suitable voltage gain. Therefore, the topology offers overall high voltage gain without transformer or large number of multiplier circuits. For buck operation, high side voltage is first divided by half with capacitor divider to gain higher stepdown ratio. Converter operates at high switching frequency to realize merits of reduced magnetics and filters. Zero voltage turn-on is achieved for all switches and zero current turn-on and turn-off is achieved for all diodes for both buck/boost operation. Voltage across switches and diode is clamped naturally without any external snubber circuit. Detailed analysis and design have been proposed. In this paper, a bidirectional, nonisolated dc–dc converter with several interleaved phases of multilevel modules for dual low-voltage automotive power systems is presented. Instead of using a two-level stage with short-circuit protection elements, a three-level module in a multiphase structure is proposed to achieve improved fault-tolerance. The dimensioning of the required flying capacitor for multilevel dc–dc converters is described. Further, benefits such as ripple reduction, automatic fault current limitation, and enhanced efficiency are achieved. Moreover, the control strategy for normal operation including the stability of the flying capacitor voltage as well as reconfiguration after semiconductor open- and short-circuit failure for ongoing degraded operation are explained. A non-isolated impulse commutated current-fed voltage doubler based non-isolated inverter for a solar photovoltaic, battery or fuel cell application is proposed in this paper. Impulse commutation enables device voltage clamping with zero current commutation of the semiconductor devices. It eliminates the traditional problem of turn-off voltage spike across the devices in current-fed converters. Unlike resonant converters, resonance pulse appears for a very short interval leading to zero current turn-off of devices. It therefore, limits peak and circulating currents through the components. Diode rectifier front-ends with large dc bus capacitors used in variable-frequency drives draw discontinuous current from the power system, resulting in a poor input power factor and high input current distortion. The 12-pulse and 18-pulse techniques used to reduce input current harmonics are popular because of their simplicity but are bulky and expensive. Autotransformer techniques require additional external magnetic components that are bulky and add to the cost of the system. A new electronically isolated 12-pulse autotransformer topology that does not need bulky external magnetic components is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs active switches to achieve electronic isolation between the two rectifiers, resulting in continuous input current with reduced harmonics. The proposed nonregenerative active scheme achieves less than 5% total harmonic distortion at a much lower cost compared with other passive or active topologies currently in the market.
