The energy blockchain is a distributed Internet protocol for energy transactions between nodes of a power system. Recent applications of the energy blockchain in microgrids only consider the energy transactions between peers without considering the technical issues that can arise, especially when the system is islanded. One contribution of the paper is, thus, to depict a comprehensive framework of the technical and economic management of microgrids in the blockchain era, considering, for the first time, the provision of ancillary services and, in particular, of the voltage regulation service. When more PV nodes are operating in the grid, large reactive power flows may appear in the branches. In order to limit such flows, a reactive optimal power flow (R-OPF) is solved, setting the voltage at the PV buses as variables within prescribed limits. Each PV generator will thus contribute to voltage regulation, receiving a remuneration included in the transaction and certified by the blockchain technology. For showing how this system can work, a test microgrid, where some energy transactions take place, has been considered. For each transaction, the R-OPF assigns the reactive power to the PV buses. The R-OPF is solved by a glow-worm swarm optimizer. Finally, the paper proposes a method for remuneration of reactive power provision; this method, integrated into the blockchain, allows evaluating the contribution to voltage regulation and increases the transparency and cost traceability in the transactions. Electric grid codes are expected to change in near future to accommodate an increased number of distributed generation units in the distribution power system without impairing its power quality. It is desired that the generators remain connected during voltage sags and provide ancillary services, such as voltage and reactive power control, ensuring the operational stability of the power system. This paper explores how the existing strategies for active and reactive power injection impact the operation of grid-tied inverters in terms of required power, current flowing, and reduction of active power delivery during the voltage sags. Such inputs are relevant to properly size converters for operation under fault events. In addition, this paper contributes to devise: 1) constant peak current control, 2) constant active current control, and 3) constant average active power control strategies for three-phase four-wire grid-tied inverters considering the natural (abc) reference frame. The design and implementation of the investigated power injection strategies are discussed, and their effectiveness and technical viability are analyzed through dynamic computational simulations under symmetrical/asymmetrical voltage sags, and variation of the short-circuit ratio. This paper studies the application of distributed and centralized solutions for voltage control in low voltage (LV) grids with high photovoltaic (PV) penetration. In traditional LV grids, the coordination of distributed PV converters and a centralized device would require massive investments in new communication and control infrastructures. The alternative of exploiting distributed PV converters for voltage control is discussed, showing that it can help to stabilize the voltage in the grid connection points also without coordination between them and/or with a centralized unit. The goal of this paper is to investigate how the setup of the voltage controllers inside PV inverters affects the operation of these controllers taking into account the limits for reactive power injection. In addition, the interaction of distributed PV converters with centralized devices (static var compensators and on load tap changers) is analyzed to assess whether additional benefits may come in these cases. Grid-interactive inverters allow distributed generation units to provide various ancillary services in microgrids. As the linear modulation region of inverters is restricted by the dc-bus voltage, providing ancillary services may drive the fundamental positive-sequence inverter voltage to the overmodulation region. Therefore, to operate in the linear modulation region the maximum active- and reactive-power of the inverter may have to be reduced unless pulsewidth modulation (PWM) references are adjusted. In this paper, an atypical PWM method is proposed for maximizing dc-bus utilization of grid-interactive two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSI) providing ancillary services. Two important ancillary services, i.e., negative-sequence compensation and harmonic compensation are considered in this paper. The proposed method increases the maximum active- and reactive-power that a 2L-VSI can deliver when providing ancillary services by injecting a common-mode component in the references computed based on instantaneous reference magnitudes. This paper analyzes the configuration, design, and operation of multi-MW grid connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems with practical test cases provided by a 10-MW field development. In order to improve the capacity factor, the PV system operates at its maximum power point during periods of lower irradiance, and the power output is limited to a rated value at high irradiance. The proposed configuration also incorporates a utility scale battery energy storage system (BESS) connected to the grid through an independent inverter and benefits of the experience gained with a 1-MW 2-MWh BESS large demonstrator. The BESS power smoothing and frequency regulation capabilities are illustrated though combined theoretical and experimental studies. The behavior of the grid connected PV and BESS combined system is studied using a modified IEEE 14 bus test system implemented in PSCAD/EMTDC. A multifunctional grid-connected inverter (MFGCI) has been a promising solution to mitigate power quality problems in distributed generation system and microgrid applications. However, the capability of a conventional MFGCI is limited when compensating a voltage-based power quality problem. In this paper, a new configuration of MFGCI is proposed to improve both voltage-based and current-based power quality issues and is named shunt-series-switched MFGCI (SSS-MFGCI). The SSS-MFGCI can be connected in series or parallel to the grid by implementing bidirectional switches to provide different modes of operation depending on various grid disturbances. The required compensating current and voltage are analytically derived considering the grid and load conditions for voltage regulation. This paper also presents the compensation strategies, control scheme, and transition scheme between different modes of the proposed SSS-MFGCI. The active power distribution network operation with the integration of various renewable distributed generations (DGs), storage units, and dynamic loads are attracting a lot of interest due to substantial benefits in maximizing the penetration of available renewable energy resources (RES). However, the risk of voltage violation in the active distribution system (ADS) is exacerbated due to increasing penetration of DGs. It has become a bottleneck to maximize the DG penetration into the system. This bottleneck can be handled by effective voltage regulation and reactive power support into ADS. Nowadays, power electronic devices are frequently used for voltage and reactive power support over the conventional approaches. In this paper, an approach to maximize the penetration of RES, such as solar, wind, etc., into ADS by maximum utilization of existing solar photovoltaic inverters (SPVI) in the system is presented. Optimal utilization of SPVI may enhance the voltage stability of the ADS and wind power penetration into the system. The proposed SPVI control approaches are depended on active power generation of solar photovoltaic (SPVG), rating and capability of SPVI, and required reactive power in the ADS. In this paper, the problem of maximum penetration of RES is formulated as an optimal power flow embedded nonlinear optimization problem subject to the physical limitations of the SPVI. The results of the analysis performed on an IEEE 33 bus system show that the proposed SPVI control strategies can improve the voltage profile of the ADS with minimization of curtailment of wind power generation. An improved hybrid unified power flow controller (IHUPFC) is developed in this paper to control the power flow and increase the utilization rate of the existing transmission lines. The IHUPFC is composed of an improved “Sen” transformer (IST) and a small capacity unified power flow controller (UPFC). After a detailed introduction of the structure and voltage regulation performance of the IST, this paper derives the capacity relationship between the IST and the UPFC. Then, this paper introduces the technology of the IHUPFC in power flow regulation and transmission capability improvement. Besides, the advantages of the IHUPFC in performance and structure are analyzed. The IST has simpler structure and larger power flow control area than a “Sen” transformer, and the IHUPFC provides a continuous active and reactive power flow control. In this paper, a dc–ac buck converter is proposed as a grid-side converter in high voltage dc (HVdc) transmission systems for high-power renewable energy source grid integration. The proposed architecture consists of multimodules of half-bridge voltage source converters (HB-VSCs). The dc terminals of the HB-VSCs are connected in series across the entire dc link (i.e., capacitor tapped), whereas their ac outputs are connected to multiwinding transformers to provide the three-phase terminals for ac grid integration. The proposed grid-connected capacitor-tapped multimodule converter (CT-MC) architecture, inspired from the HVdc shunt tap proposed by ABB, provides a dc–ac conversion with a relatively moderate voltage rating of semiconductor devices. It also provides operation with a lower number of semiconductor devices, gate driver circuits, voltage sensors, and lower total MVA rating of semiconductor devices (67%) compared with the conventional three-phase HB modular multilevel converter, which positively affects the system cost and reduces the computational burden of the employed controller. In this paper, the operational concept and control of the CT-MC are presented along with a capacitor voltage balancing approach. Simulation results are presented during normal and abnormal conditions to show the viability of the proposed architecture. This paper presents a technique based on the novel bat algorithm (NBA) for the design of the parameters of power system stabilizers and the generalized Unified power flow controller-power oscillation damping in a multimachine power system. The objective is to ensure minimal damping rates to low-frequency electromechanical oscillation modes. Simulations were carried out on the New England system to compare the performance of the NBA with three other techniques: particle swarm optimization, bacterial foraging optimization oriented by particle swarm optimization, and the bat algorithm. For the cases analyzed in this paper, the NBA produced results superior to other techniques. Moreover, the proposed methodology was able to obtain solutions with high damping levels, which showed to be robust when a wide range of loading conditions of the power system were considered. This paper proposes a decentralized control scheme for controlling active and reactive power of grid-tied ac-stacked photovoltaic (PV) inverter architecture using single member phase compensation. Reactive power control is required for the next generation of grid-tied smart PV inverter systems in power networks with high PV penetration. The decentralized control scheme proposed in this paper allows for a fully distributed architecture, both in terms of active and reactive power control and physical implementation of a PV system. This will result in higher reliability and potentially lower cost with minimum communications requirements. A decentralized controller enables higher switching frequencies that can shrink passive components. Therefore, string voltage variations due to voltage drop across passive components will be negligible and the system will be controlled with minimum communications requirement. The relative gain array approach has been used to study the feasibility of the decentralized control scheme. Detailed modeling and analysis are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach and the effect of this approach on control implementation. Finally, effectiveness of the proposed decentralized approach is verified using mathematical modeling, simulation, and a lab-scale experimental setup in different operation conditions. This paper investigates the need of coordinated operation of conservation voltage reduction (CVR) in the presence of electric vehicle (EV) penetration in the active distribution network. In order to analyze the impact of both the technologies (CVR and EV), a time horizon-based model predictive Volt/VAR optimization (VVO) methodology has been introduced in smart grid framework. The proposed VVO methodology operates in centralized as well as local controls under different time scale of operation, including cloud transient effects on solar photovoltaic (PV) power output. Moreover, the control algorithms also consider the uncertainties in load demand and PV power generation. The VVO methodology has been validated with and without presence of EV loads in the distribution network. The VVO includes the impact of different EV charging loads having the ability of participation in reactive power support at selected charging points. This is also referred to as vehicle-to-grid operation in terms of reactive power dispatch only. Besides, the voltage and VAR regulation through smart inverters of PVs and EV charging station has been fruitfully utilized in global as well as local domain. A real-time Volt/VAR droop based controller has been introduced to control the smart inverters reactive power dispatch. To validate the developed methodology, a real-time cosimulation framework, using real-time digital simulator and Python interface, has been built. The proposed model predictive VVO algorithm has been tested and validated on a modified IEEE 34 bus test system. The simulated results reveal that significant CVR energy savings and losses reduction has been achieved without violating the system constraints. Grid-connected voltage source converter is used to control the flow of active power from renewable energy sources with several functionalities, such as harmonic mitigation, reactive power compensation, and power factor improvement. The reference current calculation and its accuracy decide the performance of the control algorithms during harmonic disturbances. Fundamental signal extraction techniques are utilized to overcome the disturbances present in the system voltage and current. This paper presents a novel orthogonal current decomposition control for load current decomposition into active and reactive components. These current components are obtained through character of orthogonal vector in the inner product space. The block diagram of the proposed technique is implemented with the help of adder, multiplier, and windowed integrator. Phase voltage and load current for each phase are used as inputs to this functional diagram for getting desired fundamental active current signal. Subsequently, adjustable dc-link voltage control is also presented to diminish the switching losses in the converter and to avoid the false tripping of the grid-connected system during susceptible grid conditions. This paper proposes a novel open-winding brushless doubly-fed reluctance generator (OW-BDFRG) with dual two-level converters in order to reduce the converter rating and switching frequency for large-scale wind turbine applications. The new converter topology is equivalent to a three-level converter directly connected to the control winding of typical BDFRG. The OW-BDFRG system with this topology structure requires lower converter rating and switching frequency, and has a more flexible control mode, better operation performance, and fault redundancy capability. For the OW-BDFRG, this paper also proposes a new control scheme combining direct power control (DPC) with sliding mode variable structure (SMVS) control to implement the power tracking. The voltage-vector switching table of DPC is redesigned according to the error signals of active and reactive powers of the power winding, as well as the sector location of control winding flux. The active and reactive powers of the OW-BDFRG can be directly decoupled and independently controlled by properly selecting the switching voltage vectors. The novelty of this paper lies in an OW-BDFRG topology driven by dual two-level converters to improve the system characteristics, and the use of SMVS control to improve the DPC accuracy and robustness to parameter variations. This paper reports on the design, analysis, and characterization of a simple gallium nitride (GaN)-based ac/dc converter for battery charging applications. The proposed converter combines the merits of GaN switching transistors together with the advantages of close-to-unity power factor of a totem-pole power factor corrector, a high-frequency (HF) isolated series resonant converter, and a current doubler rectifier to reduce the copper losses of the HF transformer. The converter is designed to convert a 120 Vac input to a 48 Vdc/60 Vdc output for a 1.5 kW battery load at 65–100 kHz. Its steady-state characteristics are analyzed based on equivalent circuit and state-space models while its frequency characteristics are analyzed using MATLAB simulations. This paper deals with the control and implementation of solar photovoltaic (PV) array-based multi-objective bi-directional charger beneficial for electric vehicle (EV), household load, and utility. For EV, the charger provides the charging facility. For household load, the charger acts as a standalone inverter, and for utility the charger acts as an active power filter. However, for providing the multi-functionality and the multi-mode operation capability of the charger, a reconfigurable control strategy is proposed. Moreover, an adaptive dc-link voltage strategy is proposed for achieving the optimum voltage at dc link under all voltage conditions for achieving minimum ripple in grid currents. The charger also uses a voltage synchronization strategy for achieving the seamless mode transition between the grid-connected and standalone modes. In grid-connected mode, the charger uses a double second-order generalized integrator-based positive sequence estimator along with the improved linear sinusoidal tracer-based algorithm for generating the balanced and sinusoidal reference grid currents, under the unbalanced and distorted grid voltages. The droop-control technology, which can achieve an autonomous power sharing among distributed resources interface converters, provides the advantages of enhanced system reliability and reduced complexity. However, the reactive power sharing accuracy of the conventional $Q-V$ droop method can be degraded due to its dependence on the line impedances. The $Q-\dot{V}$ droop-control method was proposed to reduce the influence of line impedance. The reactive power sharing accuracy is improved but still affected by the $\dot{V}$ restoration operation. In this paper, a modified $\dot{V}$ restoration mechanism is proposed. Its influence on the power sharing is theoretically explained and analyzed. This paper presents a situational-aware, data-driven, and agnostic-coordinated control methodology for voltage regulation in the active distribution systems (DS) considering voltage source converters (VSCs) as reactive power sources that work in conjunction with the existing legacy controllers. The approach uses time-scale coordination based on regulator warnings such that the voltage support from regulators is time separated from the reactive power support using VSCs. Two type of voltage changes are considered; a slow changing one based on the feeder load and a fast-changing one based on sudden changes in load or PV output. The reactive support for both these changes is then designed based on the voltage to reactive power sensitivities. The combined reactive support is then used as a set-point to dispatch reactive power from the VSCs. The proposed control technique has been tested in the field verified model of a real feeder and the scalability is verified on an 8500-node real feeder. Results show that the proposed coordination approach has major economic as well and power quality benefits in the operation of DS. Due to increasing penetration of wind power plants (WPP), power grids are facing significant power quality challenges at the point of interconnection (POI). To achieve stable and robust power system operation, reactive power plays a vital role. Reactive power needed to compensate voltage fluctuations at the POI of the WPP varies with a short-circuit ratio (SCR). The reactive power capability of a WPP is also limited and largely depends on various operating conditions. In a physical system, it is difficult to find the correlation among critical parameters for voltage control. In this paper, a data-driven voltage control approach is proposed for a grid-connected WPP. Two regression models are developed through surface fitting using MATLAB curve fitting toolbox: One model based on simulation data is to determine the required reactive power for grid voltage compensation; another model based on field measurement data is to determine the reactive power characteristics of the WPP. In this paper, a regeneration protection solution is proposed to address the dc-link overvoltage issue and the unequal power sharing in the parallel uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems. First, a dc-link voltage protection control strategy is proposed to protect the inverter against the excessive dc-link voltage that may trigger the protection mechanism of the UPS system. In addition, an active power-sharing control strategy by regulating the virtual resistance is proposed to solve the circulating current caused by UPS regeneration issue. This paper focuses on a fully distributed peer-to-peer control scheme for voltage regulation and reactive power sharing of multiple inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs) in ac microgrids. The proposed peer-to-peer control strategy is fully distributed enabled through broadcast gossip communication, where each DER unit only requires local voltage and current measurement from its own and some (but not all) nearby neighbors for the voltage and reactive power sharing control. Employing the broadcast gossip communication protocol with attractive scalability and reliability properties, the control inputs can be updated to restore the voltage magnitudes at the point of common coupling to a desired value ensuring an accurate reactive power sharing for each DER. Since the proposed distributed controllers are implemented on local DERs, the central controller and hierarchy are no longer required. Accordingly, the microgrid system stability is preserved in the peer-to-peer requirements of line switches, which in turn, enables a plug-and-play operation of DERs and their robustness against microgrid topology change scenarios. Three-phase voltage source pulsewidth modulation (PWM) rectifiers can achieve constant dc voltage and sinusoidal grid currents under ideal grid voltages. However, under unbalanced grid voltage conditions, there are ripples at twice the grid frequency in the dc voltage, and the grid currents become highly distorted. To address the aforementioned problems, control methods developed under ideal grid voltage conditions should be modified. Various techniques have been proposed in the literature to calculate the new current reference or power reference. However, most methods use conventional pq theory and only consider the grid-side power control. Hence, the dc voltage ripples are not completely eliminated. Furthermore, the derived mathematical expressions for reference calculations are usually very complicated. In contrast to current methods, this paper proposes a very simple yet effective direct power control (DPC) method based on extended pq theory. By analyzing the instantaneous extended power of the line inductance, a simple and concise power compensation is analytically derived and added to the original power references. As a result, the dc voltage ripples are significantly reduced, and the grid currents remain sinusoidal even under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. To enhance the outage quality of a distribution system with a high penetration of photovoltaic (PV) renewable energy, this paper proposes a coordinating control strategy for an on-load tap changer (OLTC) of the main transformer in a distribution substation and PV smart inverters. The voltages at the end points of all distribution feeders that are served by the main transformer and the power generation of each PV system are collected using a SCADA system. The hourly tap position of the OLTC is then derived from the daily profiles of feeder voltage and the injected power that is generated by all PV systems along the feeder. Thereafter, the PV smart inverters perform autonomous control of reactive power compensation so that the voltage at the point of common coupling can be fixed at the specified voltage level. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed voltage-control strategy, a main transformer, which serves six feeders of the Taiwan Power Company(Taipower) with high PV penetration, was considered in a case study. The proposed coordinating control of the OLTC and PV smart inverters dramatically improved the voltage quality of the distribution feeder and enabled the effective mitigation of the impact of large PV integration in the distribution system. This paper proposes an innovative transformer management system (TMS) for energy control of customer loads and photovoltaic (PV) systems to solve the problems of transformer overloading and overvoltage due to power injection by PV renewable energy. The operation status of distribution transformers is monitored by transformer terminal unit (TTU) and reported to the control master station via the hybrid communication system. The demand response of customer load control is activated to reduce the loading level of transformers for mitigation of overloading problem. For the residential customers with installation of roof top PV system, the TTU is applied to perform the power factor control of smart inverter to prevent the overvoltage problem. The hybrid communication system consisting of power line carrier, LoRa radio frequency, and optical fiber is used to provide two-way communication for data collection and controls of customer loads and PV system. According to the field testing of the proposed TMS in Taiwan Power Company, the adaptive energy control of customer loads by TTU is executed when the overloading problem of distribution transformer occurs. The TTU also performs the power factor control of PV smart inverters to solve the overvoltage problem due to too much of PV power being injected during the solar peak period. This paper presents an immune feedback control algorithm for a three-phase distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) to mitigate several power quality problems such as harmonics, reactive power, and load unbalancing at distribution level. A configuration chosen for DSTATCOM is based on a three-phase voltage source converter (VSC), which is suitably controlled as a shunt compensator for performing these functions. The underlying principle of an immune feedback is based on adaptive control and the designed control estimates fundamental reference grid currents from nonlinear load currents. This control algorithm proposed for DSTATCOM, is validated for maintaining power factor to unity, load balancing, and harmonics reduction of supply currents. An improved performance of immune feedback control is presented along with its comparison with conventional control algorithms such as dq frame, normalized least mean square and other recently developed control algorithms such as leaky least mean square, leaky least mean fourth, and synchronous extraction. Experimental results are obtained with the proposed control, which is tested on a prototype developed in the laboratory using a VSC. It is observed from simulation and experimental results that the proposed control algorithm of DSTATCOM is able to achieve mitigation of most of the power quality problems at the distribution level. The inertia-free stand-alone (IFSA) microgrid is the new small power grid without synchronous generators equipped in conventional power systems. In other words, this system has the only converter-based generators (CBGs) based on energy storage devices and renewable energies. Therefore, it requires a new CBG control to provide strong voltage reference for the CBGs connected to the point of common coupling (PCC). This is because the IFSA microgrid is subject to a weak system such that it cannot maintain its rated frequency and/or bus voltage with the conventional real and reactive power controllers, which usually get their references from the PCC. This paper proposes the innovative conceptual approach for distributed coordination in the IFSA microgrid by applying the synchronized global positioning system time to the CBGs. Moreover, it is verified that the proposed physical structure of the IFSA microgrid makes it possible for all CBGs to share the real and reactive powers effectively. As the result, the proposed CBG control can provide the robustness, which is strongly required in the IFSA microgrid, based on timely outage management and restoration process. Several case studies are carried out with the microgrid of 36 MW to verify the effectiveness of the proposed CBG controller. The application of cascaded multilevel converters in large-scale photovoltaic plants connected to the utility grid has many advantages, such as the absence of sinusoidal filters and line-frequency transformers. Improved overall performance under partial shading conditions is possible due to the distribution of arrays among a large number of maximum power point trackers. In this situation, although the cells operate at different power levels, the three-phase currents injected into the point of common coupling must be balanced. A suitable control technique is required to achieve this goal. This paper presents a complete algorithm to handle three-phase power balance and single-phase power harvesting simultaneously. Simulation results assuming a medium-voltage system connected to a typical utility grid illustrate the dynamic and steady-state performance capability of the proposed strategy. Due to the development of advanced power electronic techniques, voltage-source-converter-based medium voltage dc (MVDC) traction power supply system (VSC-based MVDC TPSS) could be an alternative supply solution for high-speed railways (HSRs) in the future. The distributed configuration of the MVDC system, along with dynamic load and catenary resistance, makes the control of such system a real challenge. In this paper, an improved droop control method is proposed to obtain a better performance of system operation for the specific supply environment without any communication links. The proposed control scheme can eliminate the voltage deviation due to droop action and improve catenary network voltage control dynamics by using voltage-shifting and load current feedforward control approaches simultaneously. Additionally, the detailed model of the proposed control scheme is derived and the stability in the case of moving load is critically tested. The increasing share of distributed generation (DG) offers new chances in grid restoration of low-voltage distribution grids. Instead of relying on the transmission or high- and medium-voltage levels, establishing islanding operation in low-voltage grids might be a good option after a wide-area voltage collapse. This paper proposes a restoration strategy from zero-voltage conditions for inverter-interfaced DG under islanded conditions. In the approach, a flexible and scalable master DG inverter concept is introduced for DGs, where no communication is needed and an outage of the master can be balanced by other DG inverters. The control strategy ensures the tracking of nominal values of the system voltage and frequency without zero steady-state error. The influences of noncontrollable DG are also taken into account in the strategy with an effective countermeasure developed. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Islanded power systems for critical facilities require a robust, secure, and reliable power management system (PMS) that can respond to system disturbances and avoid blackouts to ensure process survivability. A facility in Saudi Arabia with four gas-oil separation plants and one natural gas liquids’ recovery facility operates with a total installed generation capacity of approximately two gigawatts and no utility interconnections. This paper discusses PMS components, such as automatic generation control (power and frequency), volt/VAR control systems (reactive power and voltage), intertie power factor control, high-speed generation shedding, and runback, and high-speed load shedding, along with an overview of the overall system architecture and the state-of-the-art dual-ring time-division multiplexing synchronous optical network communications networks at this facility. High-speed generation-shedding and load-shedding systems are designed with overfrequency- and underfrequency-based secondary backup protection schemes to provide additional system reliability. This paper presents the advantages of integrating battery energy storage system (BESS) with doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based standalone wind energy conversion system (SWECS). A comparison between DFIG-based SWECS with and without BESS is presented in this paper. Control strategies for both rotor-side converter (RSC) and load-side converter (LSC) are presented for regulating voltage and frequency for variable-speed DFIG-based SWECS. By integrating BESS, this proposed standalone DFIG is able to extract maximum power. A prototype of this DFIG-based SWECS is developed using a digital signal processor (DSP)-dSPACE-DS1103. This standalone DFIG is tested under nonlinear and dynamic loads in both the cases. Dynamic performance of proposed standalone DFIG is also verified for variable wind speeds. In this paper, a control strategy for the parallel operation of three-phase inverters in a modular online uninterruptable power supply (UPS) system is proposed. The UPS system is composed of a number of dc/acs with LC filter connected to the same ac critical bus and an ac/dc that forms the dc bus. The proposed control includes two layers: 1) individual layer and 2) recovery layer. In individual layer, virtual impedance concept is employed in order to achieve active power sharing while individual reactive power is calculated to modify output voltage phases to achieve reactive power sharing among different modules. Recovery layer is mainly responsible for guaranteeing synchronization capability with the utility and voltage recovery. With the proposed control, improved voltage-transient performance can be achieved and also dc/ac modules can be plugged in and out flexibly while controlling the ac critical bus voltage, thus allowing plug’n’play or hot-swap capability. This paper presents an improved dc-link voltage balancing algorithm for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter by considering phase current direction. Detailed studies on the effects of change in load current direction on the dc-link capacitor voltages are presented. A maximum value of power factor is numerically derived, above which it affects the capacitor voltage balancing capability. Compared with the previously presented research work, the inputs to the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation block are the three phase currents and the difference between the two capacitor voltages. Depending on the states of the two dc-link capacitor voltages and phase current direction, redundant voltage vector sequences are selected. The selected vectors keep the capacitor voltage deviations within 5% of the total dc-link voltage. Two zero switching vectors (i.e., PPP and NNN) are also removed from all subsectors of the earlier proposed strategy, which one used to produce higher common-mode voltages. Detailed simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper for a 6.0-kW surface permanent-magnet synchronous machine. The operational availability of mining shovels is the focus of this paper. The hypothesis is that energy quality is responsible for the frequent shutdowns of the shovels. Previous engineering studies have highlighted a large presence of harmonics and reactive power in the mine loop electric system. A common solution proposed was to use a combination of active filters, larger mobile substations, shorter mining cables, and equipment location constraints. The aim of this paper is to produce a precise diagnosis of the source and nature of the energy quality issues. Mine loop electric quality monitoring, system modeling, equipment technologies, and shovel's histograms are considered. Results are measured against IEEE standards and shovel's voltage regulation susceptibility. With the diagnosis, the goal was to produce a reliable cost-effective solution. Different alternatives are crosschecked with this paper proposal. The solution presented provides energy quality well within the shovel's susceptibility and improves energy efficiency. This paper presents a novel finite-control-set model predictive control (FS-MPC) approach for grid-connected converters. The control performance of such converters may get largely affected by variations in the supply impedance, especially for systems with low short-circuit ratio values. A novel idea for estimating the supply impedance variation, and hence the grid voltage, using an algorithm embedded in the MPC is presented in this paper. The estimation approach is based on the difference in grid voltage magnitudes at two consecutive sampling instants, calculated on the basis of supply currents and converter voltages directly within the MPC algorithm, achieving a fast estimation and integration between the controller and the impedance estimator. This paper presents a dc capacitor voltage balancing control method for the star-connected cascaded H-bridge pulsewidth modulation converter in the static synchronous compensator applications. With the zero-sequence voltage injection as a basis for dc capacitors voltage balancing, this paper investigates the detailed power flow of the converter as a whole and within individual modules under unbalanced grid voltages and then proposes a method to control the reactive power output and the dc capacitors voltage by precisely managing the power flow. This approach enhances the low-voltage ride-through capability, which is very critical as the penetration of distributed energy resources grows rapidly. This paper presents an economic evaluation of the hybrid voltage control scheme with distribution static compensator (DSTATCOM) and active power curtailment for enhancing photovoltaic (PV) penetration in Taipower distribution systems. During the peak solar irradiation period, the hybrid voltage control scheme is utilized to avoid the voltage violation problem and, thus, to increase the PV installation capacity and reduce the feeder loss as well. The annual savings from feeder loss reduction, the annual revenue of PV power sales, the initial capital investment cost for a PV project with or without a DSTATCOM, and the operating and maintenance (O&M) cost are then taken into account to evaluate the benefit and cost of the PV investment. This paper covers analyses of net present value (NPV), benefit–cost ratio (BCR), incremental BCR (IBCR), and payback period (PP) for a new PV project or an existing one to employ the hybrid enhancing scheme. With proper selection of PV and DSTATCOM capacities, the investment can be very profitable. Comparison of the results by these indicators is also presented. With a step-out distance of 161 km and a design power of 55 MW, Martin Linge offshore gas field will be the longest ac submarine cable power supplying an entire offshore oil and gas platform from the shore. This field development comprises a platform with a jack-up rig and a floating storage offloading unit. This paper discusses the criteria that have been considered to select a power-from-shore concept instead of an offshore gas turbine power plant, which is the current practice in the offshore oil and gas industry. Since in a first approach, for such a long step-out distance, the choice of power from shore would be to select a dc transmission line, this paper discusses the design and the main technical challenges of this long step-out ac transmission development. This paper proposes a comprehensive and systematic approach in developing a new switching lookup table for direct power control (DPC) based on grid virtual flux estimation, implemented in a grid-connected three-phase ac-to-dc converter. The approach provides detailed information regarding the effects of a particular converter voltage space vector to the instantaneous input active and reactive power distributions in the converter system. Thus, the optimal converter switching states are able to be selected by the switching table, allowing the smooth control of the active and the reactive power for each sector. The usage of input ac voltage sensors for synchronization and input power calculation is avoided by applying a virtual flux concept in the control scheme. The grid virtual flux estimation technique is used to extract the grid voltage information from the converter switching states, line currents, and dc-link output voltage. Detailed explanation and analysis regarding the development of virtual flux DPC utilizing the proposed switching lookup table is given in this paper. This paper proposes a new circuit configuration and a control scheme for a single-phase current-source inverter with a power decoupling circuit which is called as the active buffer. The proposed inverter achieves a low-dc-input voltage ripple and also provides a sinusoidal current that can achieve unity power factor, without large passive components in the dc bus such as smoothing inductors and electrolytic capacitors. These components are conventionally required in order to decouple the power pulsation caused by the single-phase power source. In this paper, the fundamental operations of the proposed inverter are demonstrated experimentally. From the experimental results, the input voltage ripple is 8.87%, and the output current total harmonic distortion is 4.24%. In addition, an output power factor of 99% and a maximum efficiency of 94.9% are obtained. Finally, it is confirmed that the maximum power densities of the conventional circuit and the proposed circuit are 2.75 kW/L at the switching frequency of 70 kHz and 4.86 kW/L at the switching frequency of 80 kHz, respectively. This paper presents a system identification based minimum variance control architecture for three-phase voltage source inverters that work seamlessly in both grid connected and grid forming modes. The controller is adaptive as parameters in the control law are updated online based on an identified system that relate the inverter output to input. Main advantages of the proposed controller are 1) it can be used in both modes of inverter operation and 2) the controller adapts under varying operating conditions, thus capable of accommodating uncertain energy resources and yet maintaining the power quality. First, the design of the controller is presented and simulation results from test performed using MATLAB SimPowerSystems along with hardware-in-the-loop implementation are illustrated. Second, operation of the inverter controller in the context of micro grids is discussed. The results show that the proposed controller can be a better alternative to the existing cascaded PI based vector control for both grid connected and grid forming modes of operation. This paper presents an islanding detection method for a two-stage photovoltaic (PV) inverter. The novelty in this method is that it does not rely on instantaneous value of the grid voltage for identifying the islanded condition. Instead, the islanding condition is detected by the saturation of the proportional integral (PI) controller of the outer voltage control loop. This makes the proposed detection algorithm more reliable compared with other voltage-based detection algorithms, as it is immune to malfunctions caused by the sudden load changes or other transients. In addition, a simple but accurate implementation strategy for low-voltage ride through (LVRT) operation is also proposed and integrated with the anti-islanding operation. Both these methods are placed inside the overall control structure that can perform seamless transition between grid-connected and standalone modes of operation. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed anti-islanding and LVRT techniques. In this paper, a fuzzy-secondary-controller-based virtual synchronous generator (VSG) control scheme for interfacing inverters of distributed generation units is proposed for voltage and frequency regulation in microgrids. To support distribution planning and operations engineers, this paper describes an optimal methodology for specifying smart inverter settings that will improve photovoltaic (PV) integration into distribution systems. The dynamic nature of the distribution system requires that a range of load and solar conditions be considered for this purpose. Time-series analysis was performed using Open-source Distribution System Simulator modeling environment to determine the overall impact on the distribution feeder. For the feeder investigated, the use of smart inverters was evaluated for mitigating potential voltage-related issues by reducing the magnitude and/or number of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) voltage violations, as well as meeting other objectives like increasing in substation power factor and reducing distribution system losses. Commonly, voltage regulators and capacitor banks are used as control devices for voltage and reactive power (volt/VAr) control in distribution system. A specific mechanism can be developed using volt/VAr control for energy savings known as conservation voltage reduction (CVR). Active distribution system with high penetration of distribution generations (DG's) offers additional mechanism for volt/VAr control. The unique contribution of this paper is development of a computational algorithm for intelligent volt/VAr optimization and control of complex distribution networks with active participation from DG's to maximize overall network energy savings through CVR. Proposed volt/VAr optimization problem is solved to find the optimal voltage regulator settings, switched capacitor states, and voltage magnitude of DG controlled bus. This work presents a unique coordinated volt/VAr architecture that can find application in distribution management systems. Particle swarm optimization has been used given compatibility with combinatorial variables, robustness in solving nonlinear optimization problems, and ease of implementation. The results have been validated against an exhaustive search strategy for the IEEE 13 bus and IEEE 37 bus distribution system, and also using commercial distribution software SynerGEE. A new approach for reactive power management with volt–var control, but considering inverters’ capacity and sensitivity to the critical bus is presented in this paper. The approach addresses the voltage rise and reverse power flow issues when residential renewable energy sources such as rooftop solar panels produce more energy than the local load demand. The overvoltage is controlled by selective var injection based on the inverter location, capacity, and minimum power factor limit set by regulation. This method improves the voltage regulation of a distributed system with high penetration of renewable energy sources while efficiently utilizing the inverters’ reactive power capacity. This paper presents a novel distributed approach to achieve both bounded voltage and accurate reactive power sharing regulation in ac microgrid. The coupling/trade-off effects between bus voltages and reactive power sharing regulation are first analyzed in detail to provide a guideline for coordinated control design. Furthermore, a containment and consensus-based distributed coordination controller is proposed, by which the bus voltage magnitudes can be bounded within a reasonable range, instead of only controlling average voltage value. Furthermore, the accurate reactive power sharing between distributed generators can be achieved simultaneously. Then, a detailed small-signal model is developed to analyze the stability of the system and the sensitivity of different parameters. This paper investigates the utilization of two different six-leg configurations of single-phase to three-phase converters. One of the topologies is transformerless and the other is transformer based. The studied converters allow feeding the load voltage with sinusoidal voltages with constant amplitude and frequency, and to operate with sinusoidal grid current with high power factor. The system model and pulse-width modulation techniques for one of the topologies are given. Control strategies for both topologies are provided. The studied topologies are compared with the conventional in terms of dc-link specification, voltages harmonic distortions, semiconductor losses, and other characteristics. Due to the varying and intermittent nature of wind resource, grid-connected wind farms pose significant technical challenges to power grid on power quality and voltage stability. Wind farm Q–V characteristic curve at the point of interconnection (POI) can offer valuable information for voltage control actions and provide essential indication about voltage stability. Data-driven analytics is a promising approach to determine characteristics of a large complex system, a physical model of which is difficult to obtain. In this paper, data-driven analytics is used to determine Q–V curve of grid-connected wind farms based on measurement data recorded at the POI. Different curve-fitting models, such as polynomial, Gaussian, and rational, are evaluated, and the best fit is determined based on different graphical and numerical evaluation metrics. A case study is conducted using field measurement data at two grid-connected wind farms currently in operation in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is found that the Gaussian (degree 2) model describes the Q–V relationship most accurately for the two wind farms. The obtained functions and processed data can be used in the voltage controller design. The plotted QV curve can also be used to determine the reactive margin at the POI for voltage stability evaluation. This paper proposes a modified pq-theory-based control of a solar photovoltaic (PV)-array-integrated unified power quality conditioner (PV-UPQC-S). The system incorporates clean energy generation along with power quality improvement, thus increasing functionality of the system. The fundamental-frequency positive-sequence components of voltages at the point of common coupling (PCC) are extracted using the generalized cascaded delay signal cancellation technique, which are then used in pq-theory-based control to estimate reference signals for the PV-UPQC-S. This modification in pq theory enables its application for PV-UPQC-S control under conditions of distorted PCC voltages. The series voltage-source converter (VSC) of the PV-UPQC-S operates such that it shares a part of the reactive power of the load even under nominal grid conditions. This increases the utilization of the series VSC while reducing the rating of shunt VSC. The PV array is integrated at the dc bus of the UPQC and provides a part of active load power, thus reducing demand on the supply system. The dynamic performance of the modified pq-theory-based PV-UPQC-S is verified by simulating the system in MATLAB-Simulink with a combination of linear and nonlinear loads.
