The Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes are a well-studied subclass of cyclic codes that have found numerous applications in error correction and notably in quantum information processing. They are widely used in data storage and communication systems. A subclass of attractive BCH codes is the narrow-sense BCH codes over the Galois field ${\mathrm {GF}}(q)$ with length $q+1$ , which are closely related to the action of the projective general linear group of degree two on the projective line. Despite its interest, not much is known about this class of BCH codes. This paper aims to study some of the codes within this class and specifically narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes (these codes are also linear complementary duals (LCD) codes that have interesting practical recent applications in cryptography, among other benefits). We shall use tools and combine arguments from algebraic coding theory, combinatorial designs, and group theory (group actions, representation theory of finite groups, etc.) to investigate narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH Codes and extend results from the recent literature. Notably, the dimension, the minimum distance of some $q$ -ary BCH codes with length $q+1$ , and their duals are determined in this paper. The dual codes of the narrow-sense antiprimitive BCH codes derived in this paper include almost MDS codes. Furthermore, the classification of ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ -invariant codes over ${\mathrm {GF}}(p^{h})$ is completed. As an application of this result, the $p$ -ranks of all incidence structures invariant under the projective general linear group ${\mathrm {PGL}}(2, p^{m})$ are determined. Furthermore, infinite families of narrow-sense BCH codes admitting a 3-transitive automorphism group are obtained. Via these BCH codes, a coding-theory approach to constructing the Witt spherical geometry designs is presented. Locally repairable codes have been investigated extensively in recent years due to practical applications in distributed storage as well as theoretical interest. However, not much work on asymptotical behavior of locally repairable codes has been done until now. In particular, there is little result on constructive lower bound of asymptotical behavior of locally repairable codes. In this paper, we extend the construction given by Barg et al. via automorphism groups of function field towers. The main advantage of our construction is to allow more flexibility of locality. Tang and Ding [IEEE IT 67 (2021) 244-254] studied the class of BCH codes $\mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ and their dual codes with $q=2^{m}$ and established that the codewords of the minimum (or the second minimum) weight in these codes support 4-designs or 3-designs. Motivated by this, we further investigate the codewords of the next adjacent weight in such codes and discover more infinite classes of $t$ -designs with $t=3,4$. In particular, we prove that codewords of weight 7 in $\mathcal {C}_{(q,q+1,4,1)}$ support 4-designs for odd $m \geqslant 5$ and they support 3-designs for even $m \geqslant 4$ , which provide infinite classes of simple $t$ -designs with new parameters. Another significant class of $t$ -designs we produce in this paper has complementary designs with parameters 4- $(2^{2s+1}+ 1,5,5)$ ; these designs have the smallest index among all the known simple 4- $(q+1,5,\lambda)$ designs derived from codes for prime powers $q$ ; and they are further proved to be isomorphic to the 4-designs admitting the projective general linear group PGL $(2,2^{2s+1})$ as the automorphism group constructed by Alltop in 1969. The Euclidean hull of a linear code $C$ is the intersection of $C$ with its Euclidean dual $C^\perp $. The hull with low dimensions gets much interest due to its crucial role in determining the complexity of algorithms for computing the automorphism group of a linear code and for checking permutation equivalence of two linear codes. The Euclidean hull of a linear code has been applied to the so-called entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes (EAQECCs) via classical error-correcting codes. In this paper, we firstly consider linear codes with one-dimensional Euclidean hull from algebraic geometry codes, and then present a general method to construct linear codes with arbitrary dimensional Euclidean hull. Locally repairable codes, or locally recoverable codes (LRC for short), are designed for applications in distributed and cloud storage systems. Similar to classical block codes, there is an important bound called the Singleton-type bound for locally repairable codes. In this paper, an optimal locally repairable code refers to a block code achieving this Singleton-type bound. Like classical MDS codes, optimal locally repairable codes carry some very nice combinatorial structures. Since the introduction of the Singleton-type bound for locally repairable codes, people have put tremendous effort into construction of optimal locally repairable codes. There are a few constructions of optimal locally repairable codes in the literature. Most of these constructions are realized via either combinatorial or algebraic structures. In this paper, we apply automorphism group of the rational function field to construct optimal locally repairable codes by considering the group action on projective lines over finite fields. Due to various subgroups of the projective general linear group, we are able to construct optimal locally repairable codes with flexible locality as well as smaller alphabet size comparable to the code length. In this paper, we determine all dihedral subgroups in $PGL_{2}(\mathbb {F}_{q})$ , where $q=2^{l}$ and $l$ is a positive integer; and construct binary expurgated and extended Goppa codes with dihedral automorphism groups. Boolean functions, coding theory and $t$ -designs have close connections and interesting interplay. A standard approach to constructing $t$ -designs is the use of linear codes with certain regularity. The Assmus-Mattson Theorem and the automorphism groups are two ways for proving that a code has sufficient regularity for supporting $t$ -designs. However, some linear codes hold $t$ -designs, although they do not satisfy the conditions in the Assmus-Mattson Theorem and do not admit a $t$ -transitive or $t$ -homogeneous group as a subgroup of their automorphisms. The major objective of this paper is to develop a theory for explaining such codes and obtaining such new codes and hence new $t$ -designs. To this end, a general theory for punctured and shortened codes of linear codes supporting $t$ -designs is established, a generalized Assmus-Mattson theorem is developed, and a link between 2-designs and differentially $\delta $ -uniform functions and 2-designs is built. With these general results, binary codes with new parameters and explicit weight distributions are obtained, new 2-designs and Steiner system $S(2, 4, 2^{n})$ are produced in this paper. Let $m$ be an arbitrary positive integer and $D_{8m}$ be the dihedral group of order $8m$ , i.e., $D_{8m}=\langle x,y\mid x^{4m}=1, y^{2}=1, yxy=x^{-1}\rangle $. Left ideals of the dihedral group algebra $\mathbb {F}_{2}[D_{8m}]$ are called binary left dihedral codes of length $8m$ , and abbreviated as binary left $D_{8m}$ -codes. In this paper, we give an explicit representation and enumeration for all distinct self-dual binary left $D_{8m}$ -codes. These codes make up an important class of self-dual binary $[8m,4m]$ -codes such that the dihedral group $D_{8m}$ is necessarily a subgroup of the automorphism group of each code. In particular, we provide recursive algorithms to solve congruence equations over finite chain rings for constructing all distinct self-dual binary left $D_{8m}$ -codes and obtain a Mass formula to count the number of all these self-dual codes. As a preliminary application, we obtain the extremal self-dual binary $[{48,24,12}]$ -code and an extremal self-dual binary $[{56,28,12}]$ -code from self-dual binary left $D_{48}$ -codes and left $D_{56}$ -codes respectively. Locally recoverable (LRC) codes provide ways of recovering erased coordinates of the codeword without having to access each of the remaining coordinates. A subfamily of LRC codes with hierarchical locality (H-LRC codes) provides added flexibility to the construction by introducing several tiers of recoverability for correcting different numbers of erasures. We present a general construction of codes with 2-level hierarchical locality from maps between algebraic curves and specialize it to several code families obtained from quotients of curves by a subgroup of the automorphism group, including rational, elliptic, Kummer, and Artin–Schreier curves. We further address the question of H-LRC codes with availability, and suggest a general construction of such codes from fiber products of curves. Detailed calculations of parameters for H-LRC codes with availability are performed for Reed–Solomon- and Hermitian-like code families. Blowfish privacy is a recent generalisation of differential privacy that enables improved utility while maintaining privacy policies with semantic guarantees, a factor that has driven the popularity of differential privacy in computer science. This paper relates Blowfish privacy to an important measure of privacy loss of information channels from the communications theory community: min-entropy leakage. Symmetry in an input data neighbouring relation is central to known connections between differential privacy and min-entropy leakage. But while differential privacy exhibits strong symmetry, Blowfish neighbouring relations correspond to arbitrary simple graphs owing to the framework’s flexible privacy policies. To bound the min-entropy leakage of Blowfish-private mechanisms we organise our analysis over symmetrical partitions corresponding to orbits of graph automorphism groups. A Locally Recoverable Code is a code such that the value of any single coordinate of a codeword can be recovered from the values of a small subset of other coordinates. When we have $\delta $ non-overlapping subsets of cardinality $r_{i}$ that can be used to recover the missing coordinate we say that a linear code $\mathcal {C}$ with length $n$ , dimension $k$ , minimum distance $d$ has $(r_{1},\ldots, r_\delta)$ -locality and denote by $[n, k, d; r_{1}, r_{2}, {\dots }, r_\delta]$. In this paper we provide a new upper bound for the minimum distance of these codes. Working with a finite number of subgroups of cardinality $r_{i}+1$ of the automorphism group of a function field $\mathcal {F}| \mathbb {F}_{q}$ of genus $g \geq 1$ we propose a construction of $[n, k, d; r_{1}, r_{2}, {\dots }, r_\delta]$ -codes and apply the results to some well known families of function fields. A code over a finite alphabet is called locally recoverable (LRC code) if every symbol in the encoding is a function of a small number (at most $r$ ) of other symbols of the codeword. In this paper, we introduce a construction of LRC codes on algebraic curves, extending a recent construction of the Reed–Solomon like codes with locality. We treat the following situations: local recovery of a single erasure, local recovery of multiple erasures, and codes with several disjoint recovery sets for every coordinate (the availability problem). For each of these three problems we describe a general construction of codes on curves and construct several families of LRC codes. We also describe a construction of codes with availability that relies on automorphism groups of curves. We also consider the asymptotic problem for the parameters of the LRC codes on curves. We show that the codes obtained from asymptotically maximal curves (for instance, Garcia-Stichtenoth towers) improve upon the asymptotic versions of the Gilbert-Varshamov bound for LRC codes. Hermitian functional and differential codes are AG-codes defined on a Hermitian curve. To ensure good performance, the divisors defining such AG-codes have to be carefully chosen, exploiting the rich combinatorial and algebraic properties of the Hermitian curves. In this paper, the case of differential codes $C_{\Omega }(\mathtt {D},m\mathtt {T})$ on the Hermitian curve $\mathscr {H}_{q^{3}}$ defined over $\mathbb {F}_{q^{6}}$ is worked out where $\mathop {\mathrm {supp}}\nolimits (\mathtt {T}):= \mathscr {H}_{q^{3}}(\mathbb {F}_{q^{2}})$ , the set of all $\mathbb {F}_{q^{2}}$ -rational points of $\mathscr {H}_{q^{3}}$ , while $\mathtt {D}$ is taken, as usual, to be the sum of the points in the complementary set $D = \mathscr {H}_{q^{3}}(\mathbb {F}_{q^{6}})\setminus \mathscr {H} _{q^{3}}(\mathbb {F}_{q^{2}})$. A Z2Z4 -linear Hadamard code of length \alpha +2\beta =2^t is a binary Hadamard code, which is the Gray map image of a Z2Z4 -additive code with \alpha binary coordinates and \beta quaternary coordinates. It is known that there are exactly \lfloor \frac t-12 \rfloor and \lfloor \frac t2 \rfloor nonequivalent Z2Z4 -linear Hadamard codes of length 2^t , with $\alpha =0$ and \alpha \not =0$ , respectively, for all t\geq 3$ . In this paper, it is shown that each \alpha =0$ is equivalent to a Z2Z4 -linear Hadamard code with \alpha \not =0 nonequivalent Z2Z4 -linear Hadamard codes of length 2^t . Moreover, the order of the monomial automorphism group for the Z2Z4 -additive Hadamard codes and the permutation automorphism group of the corresponding Z2Z4 -linear Hadamard codes are given. For a growing number of applications, such as cellular, peer-to-peer, and sensor networks, efficient error-free transmission of data through a network is essential. Toward this end, Kötter and Kschischang propose the use of subspace codes to provide error correction in the network coding context. The primary construction for subspace codes is the lifting of rank-metric or matrix codes, a process that preserves the structural and distance properties of the underlying code. Thus, to characterize the structure and error-correcting capability of these subspace codes, it is valuable to perform such a characterization of the underlying rank-metric and matrix codes. This paper lays a foundation for this analysis through a framework for classifying rank-metric and matrix codes based on their structure and distance properties. To enable this classification, we extend work by Berger on equivalence for rank-metric codes to define a notion of equivalence for matrix codes, and we characterize the group structure of the collection of maps that preserve such equivalence. We then compare the notions of equivalence for these two related types of codes and show that matrix equivalence is strictly more general than rank-metric equivalence. Finally, we characterize the set of equivalence maps that fix the prominent class of rank-metric codes known as Gabidulin codes. In particular, we give a complete characterization of the rank-metric automorphism group of Gabidulin codes, correcting work by Berger, and give a partial characterization of the matrix-automorphism group of the expanded matrix codes that arise from Gabidulin codes. A computer calculation with Magma shows that there is no extremal self-dual binary code C of length 72 that has an automorphism group containing either the dihedral group of order 10, the elementary abelian group of order 9, or the cyclic group of order 7. We investigate right ideals as codes in twisted group algebras. Such codes are called twisted group codes. It turns out that many interesting codes belong to this class; for instance, the ternary extended Golay code, Hamming codes and constacyclic codes. The non-linear binary Kerdock codes are known to be Gray images of certain extended cyclic codes of length $N = 2^{m}$ over $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$. We show that exponentiating these $\mathbb {Z}_{4}$ -valued codewords by $i \triangleq \sqrt {-1}$ produces stabilizer states, that are quantum states obtained using only Clifford unitaries. These states are also the common eigenvectors of commuting Hermitian matrices forming maximal commutative subgroups (MCS) of the Pauli group. We use this quantum description to simplify the derivation of the classical weight distribution of Kerdock codes. Next, we organize the stabilizer states to form $N+1$ mutually unbiased bases and prove that automorphisms of the Kerdock code permute their corresponding MCS, thereby forming a subgroup of the Clifford group. When represented as symplectic matrices, this subgroup is isomorphic to the projective special linear group PSL($2,N$). We show that this automorphism group acts transitively on the Pauli matrices, which implies that the ensemble is Pauli mixing and hence forms a unitary 2-design. The Kerdock design described here was originally discovered by Cleve et al. (2016), but the connection to classical codes is new which simplifies its description and translation to circuits significantly. Sampling from the design is straightforward, the translation to circuits uses only Clifford gates, and the process does not require ancillary qubits. Finally, we also develop algorithms for optimizing the synthesis of unitary 2-designs on encoded qubits, i.e., to construct logical unitary 2-designs. The dual of the Kasami code of length $q^{2}-1$ , with $q$ a power of 2, is constructed by concatenating a cyclic MDS code of length $q+1$ over $F_{q}$ with a Simplex code of length $q-1$. This yields a new derivation of the weight distribution of the Kasami code, a new description of its coset graph, and a new proof that the Kasami code is completely regular. The automorphism groups of the Kasami code and the related $q$ -ary MDS code are determined. New cyclic completely regular codes over finite fields a power of 2, generalized Kasami codes, are constructed; they have coset graphs isomorphic to that of the Kasami codes. Another wide class of completely regular codes, including additive codes, as well as unrestricted codes, is obtained by combining cosets of the Kasami or generalized Kasami code. Using the method for constructing binary self-dual codes with an automorphism of order square of a prime number, we have classified all binary self-dual codes with length 76 having minimum weight $d=14$ via automorphism of order 9. Up to equivalence, there are six self-dual [76, 38, 14] codes with an automorphism of type 9-(8, 0, 4). We classify extremal Hermitian self-dual quaternary codes of lengths 30 and 32 with an automorphism of odd prime order. We prove that there exists exactly one extremal Hermitian self-dual [30,15,12] quaternary code with a nontrivial automorphism of odd prime order, up to equivalence; the order of its automorphism group is 36 540. In fact, this code is equivalent to the extended quadratic residue code. The existence of an extremal code of length 72 is a long-standing open problem. Let \cal C be a putative extremal code of length 72 and suppose that \cal C has an automorphism g of order 6. We show that \cal C, as an \BBF2\langle g\rangle-module, is the direct sum of two modules; it is easy to determine one of them, while the other one has a very restrictive structure. We use this fact to do an exhaustive search and we do not find an extremal code. This proves that the automorphism group of an extremal code of length 72 does not contain elements of order 6.
