Marx generator using all-solid-state devices has been studied for many years. Higher parameters are always the demand for new applications. Traditional all-solid-state Marx generator can output high voltage due to its series topology, but the current is always limited by the switch. In this paper, a stage-stage paralleled topology of Marx generator for high current has been proposed. Topology structure and driving mode comparison for current balance have been analyzed. The paralleled driving mode for the current balance and the shaping waveform has been proposed. For experiment, a four-stage-four-paralleled Marx generator with metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) has been constructed with output pulses 2.2 kV, 730 A (depending on the load), rise time of 31 ns, fall time of 56 ns, and adjustable pulsewidth from 400 to 800 ns. Because it possesses higher current turn-off capability, the inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS) is a better option for the opening switch of an inductive pulsed power supply than the integrated gate commutated thyristor. This paper investigates the counter-current capacitor, which is the key component that determines the turn-off result and the volume of the counter-current branch. The major contributions of this paper include the following: 1) deriving an analytical expression for the minimum precharged capacitor voltage that can reliably turn off the main switch; 2) verifying this expression through a series of experiments within a current range of 0 to 4000 A and an energy range of 0 to 50 kJ; 3) giving an approximate expression for the optimal capacitance that minimizes the precharged energy; and 4) investigating the variation trends of the optimal capacitance and the corresponding optimal precharged energy with varying inductor current. Superconducting pulsed-power supply (SPPS) provides an efficient method for both high-density inductive energy storage and high current pulse generation. An SPPS consisting of eight high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) modules with XRAM methodology was designed and simulated in preliminary studies. It recycled the leakage flux energy and reduced the voltage across the opening switch with a capacitor in primary. However, the SPPS with XRAM methodology has two problems. The first one is that it can provide high pulse amplitude, but cannot provide enough width. The other one is that the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is relatively large, which cuts down the overall system energy density. This paper proposes a modified topology of SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology. Multiple HTSPPT modules are divided into several groups. Each group shares the same capacitor. The procedure of the modified SPPS is presented in detail. A 270-kJ SPPS with capacitor reuse methodology is designed and simulated to illustrate the modified topology. With the load parameters of a small railgun, the peak value of the load current is 207.15 kA and the pulse half-height width is 5.56 ms, the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy is 11%. This paper is aimed at finding the effect of varying inductive energy storage systems’ (IESSs) inductance on resistance of an electrically exploded conductor-based opening switch and profile of current transferred into load, which has not yet been fully understood. Based on experimental results obtained, it is observed that when the inductance of IESS is varied, the magnitude of load current changes so as to conform to the magnetic flux conservation law but its rise time remains unchanged. Resistance of the opening switch and energy deposited in it has been estimated using recorded voltage and current waveforms. It has been found that with increasing inductance of IESS, the resistance of switch increases, whereas energy deposited in it decreases. Using these estimated values of energy, a possible explanation of observed behavior in resistance is presented. Effect of a mismatch between the inductance of IESS and load is seen to only affect the energy transfer efficiency or magnitude of load current but not its rise time emphasizing the novel finding that for a given load, the rise time of load current is independent of the inductance of IESS. Repetitive high-voltage square pulses are of great importance for producing long-pulse electron beams and high-power microwaves. One of possible technologies for the generation of such pulses is a Marx generator using pulse forming network (PFN) stages, often combined with a pulse sharpening technique to reduce the rise time to a few nanoseconds (peaking stage). This paper presents an innovative design, named the “zigzag design,” for the optimization of the compactness and of the rise time of 400-kV–85-ns PFN-Marx. Thanks to this design, the 16 stages of this generator, which delivers an open circuit output voltage of 720 kV, fit in a 650-mm length. For a slightly overmatched load ($Z_{\mathrm {load}} = 100 ~\Omega$), the output voltage reaches 400 kV with a rise time as less as 5 ns. The inductance reduction associated with the innovative zigzag design, which allows this sharp rise time with no need for a peaking stage, is described. The 85-ns plateau duration of the pulse is given by the PFN construction of each stage, which is based on six ceramic capacitors (2.1 nF–45 kV) connected within a strip line. The 16 PFN stages are housed in a 360-mm diameter gas pressurized vessel. Burst mode operation for a duration of 10 s at a pulse repetition frequency of 100 Hz is reported, for a resistive load and for the electron beam diode of a X-band relativistic backward-wave oscillator (BWO). To reach further compactness, the BWO system is integrated on side of the generator vessel and a U-shaped gas pressurized line connects both systems through a compact conical vacuum insulator. This paper presents a new capacitor bank topology for a pulsed power system to improve the efficiency of multistage synchronous induction coilgun. In the proposed method, a switch, such a gate turn-off thyristor, is inserted in parallel to a crowbar diode and load to generate an attractive force between the next stator and the armature. A mathematical model was developed, and finite-element method simulations were conducted to verify the proposed topology. The results show that the proposed method improves the energy efficiency and launch velocity. In this paper, the results of a 2.88-MW solid-state long-pulse modulator, which has been designed for the new linear collider at the european spallation source in Lund, are summarized. The presented modulator generates an output voltage pulse of 115 kV with a pulselength of 3.5 ms. The main components of the modular system, which include a series–parallel resonance converter, a high-voltage high-frequency transformer, and an output rectifier, are discussed. The modulator design is verified by measurements performed with a full-scale prototype, which is operated under nominal load conditions. A detailed output voltage ripple evaluation is given, and in addition, the system design has been proven by a 7- and 2/3-h heat run test. All specifications are well within the given limits, and the maximum occurring temperatures in the transformer stay below 110 °C even under worst case assumptions. The system achieves a pulse efficiency (determined by the pulse shape) of 96.78%, an overall electrical system efficiency of 91.9%, and a combined pulse system efficiency of 89%. Paralleled pulse-forming units (PFUs) with different triggering delays might be a paramagnetic way for generating flat-topped current wave for electromagnetic launch. Many researchers have reported that multiple capacitive storage PFUs were implemented such current waves in laboratories. However, due to its low energy density, the applications of the capacitive pulsed-power supplies are limited. Since the inductor has advantages in energy density, the inductor pulsed-power supply becomes one of the hottest topics recently. The slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices proposed by Tsinghua University has demonstrated its advantage and applicability recently. Using this kind of topology, this paper proposes the design of an inductive storage PFU with a stored energy of 100-kJ. The maximum load current reaches to 50 kA and its pulsewidth is at least 5 ms. The optimized inductive storage PFU shows superiority in contrast to the capacitive storage PFU with the same energy. Slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder circuit, which was proposed by the Institute for Advanced Technology, added a capacitor into the traditional meat grinder circuit. Even though its energy density is slightly less than the corresponding pure inductance system, it can reduce the voltage across the opening switch and maintain the high multiplication factor of the opening current. The performance of the STRETCH meat grinder circuit depends on multiple parameters. The inductance ratio ( n=L1 / L2) and the capacitance (C) are the two vital factors, which have a crucial influence on the system performance, such as the voltage over the opening switch ( V_{\rm Sopm}) , the current multiplication factor ( m$ ), and the ratio of the maximum capacitive energy over the total inductive energy ( $\eta )$ . Thorough studies have been carried out in this paper on the relationship between the above two factors and the three performance criteria. This paper also discusses and analyzes the chosen of the key parameters ( $n$ and $C$ ) for a single-stage STRETCH meat grinder with 2-mH total inductance, which is made up of two serial coils with 0.95 coupling factor. The opening current of the main switch is 1 kA, which constitutes a 1-kJ inductive pulsed-power supply. A magnetic pulse compressor (MPC) transfers energy via $C$ – $L$ – $C$ resonance. The pulse width of the MPC is determined by the saturation inductance of the magnetic switch (MS). When using the MS, the pulse width is limited due to the stray elements. To increase the pulse compression rate, the number of stray elements must be reduced. In this paper, we propose an optimum design for an MS having the lowest impedance of stray elements, along with its analysis and experimental verification. The proposed model is designed to have a reduced magnetic path length while retaining the same saturation inductances as that of a common MS; this is accomplished by using the relationship between the magnetic field path length and the number of inductor turns. The experimental results show that the proposed MS decreases the full width at half maximum by 18% and increases the rise rate by 69%. In a magnetic pulse compressor (MPC), the saturation inductance of the magnetic switch (MS) determines the energy transfer time. Thus, in general, the number of windings on the MS is modulated to vary the saturation inductance. Changing the number of windings also changes the energy transfer time and the saturation time. In this paper, we propose and analyze an MS with multiwindings to modulate the pulse width without affecting the saturation time of the MS. The parallel structure of the multiwindings on the MS decreases the energy transfer time without affecting the saturation time. Through experiments, we show that the energy transfer time is decreased by 13% via a double winding MS. Therefore, an MS with multiwindings can be used to modulate the pulse width at the last stage of the MPC without affecting the saturation time of the MS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper is concerned with the development and testing of a compact flat format multichannel electrically triggered rail spark gap. It is tested for multichannel discharge under atmosphere for high reliability. Multichannel discharge rail spark gaps can be developed using laser trigger or fast rising trigger voltage pulse (>5~kV/ns). The extra volume and weight added by laser or fast triggering circuits limit the use in pulse power applications. An electrically multitriggered low-inductance spark gap is developed. It is used as a multichannel low-inductance discharging element in a fast rising high-current generation system. The trigger of such rail gap is realized using the set of round copper pins similar to single trigger pin in a field distortion spark gap. In parenthesis, five different trigger pins are located in main trigger plate and these are isolated with high impedance. Therefore, five different trigger signals are generated with time difference of tens of nanoseconds. The major material erosion at five points of both stainless steel main electrodes confirms the multichanneling discharge. The main gap spacing in this switch is 4 mm and the trigger is located close to the ground electrode for reducing the delay time and jitter in delay time. This paper discusses the modeling of a peaking switch to study the reduction in rise time for the subnanosecond duration pulses. Megavolt-class-triggered switches play a key role in large-induction voltage adder accelerators. This paper introduces a 2.8-MV, low-inductance, low-jitter, electrical-triggered, gas SF6 switch. The main section is a $V/n$ switch and the pretrigger section is a trigatron switch. Based on electric field simulation, experiment, and analysis, the structure and spacing of gaps, location of trigger disk, diaphragm, and switch inductance are all discussed. The primary test indicates that the switch can be operated in the range of 0.85–2.76 MV with the pressure of the SF6 changing from 0.1 to 0.9 MPa. The self-breakdown voltage is linearly related to the logarithm of the pressure, as the gap spacing and the voltage rise time are fixed. Three working modes were observed: self-breakdown, self-triggered, and ex-triggered. In the triggered modes, the switch jitter is <3 ns and the switch inductance is usually below 150 nH. This paper details the experimental evaluation and simulation of a 4-kV n-type gate turn-OFF thyristor (GTO) designed for pulsed power applications. The primary criteria of evaluation are rate of current rise ( dI/dt ), turn-ON delay time ( T_{D}) , and resistance of the device during turn-ON transients [ R_{\mathrm{\scriptscriptstyle ON}}(t)$ ]. The device under test (DuT) is an n-type asymmetric-blocking GTO manufactured by Silicon Power (Part No. 14N40A10) with a rated dc blocking voltage of 4 kV. A test circuit was specifically designed to minimize stray inductance in order to capitalize on the dI/dt$ capabilities of the DuT. Experimental data collected from resistance measurements are used to develop a single-switch approximate model for use in simulation. The results of dI/dt$ experiments provide a profile of DuT dI/dt$ operation beyond rated values; specifically dI/dt were readily achieved. The superconducting inductive pulsed-power supply (SPPS) circuit consists of a high-temperature superconducting pulsed-power transformer (HTSPPT) and an auxiliary capacitor. The electrical losses and the power of the primary source can be cut down with the superconducting inductive energy storage. Although its energy density is slightly less than a purely superconducting inductive system, it can reduce the maximum voltage of the opening switch by the capacitor and achieve a high degree of current amplification factor. However, during the discharge process, the magnetic leakage flux energy stored in the primary of the HTSPPT requires the capacitor to have a certain capacity. The higher the ratio of the capacitive stored energy over the total inductive stored energy, the more the dominant position of inductive energy storage reduces. The current amplification factor ( \gamma ), the maximum voltage of the opening switch ( V_{S\max } ), and the ratio of capacitive stored energy ( \eta ) are the three main properties of the SPPS circuit, which depends on several intertwined critical parameters, such as the inductance ratio n = L2 /( L2+LL ) and the capacitance ( $C_{{\mathbf {1}}}$ ). This paper studies the influence of the critical parameters on the main circuit performance with a 1-kJ SPPS system. The detailed selection method of the critical parameters for the specific system is also discussed with a coupling coefficient of 0.95. For the generation of short high-power pulses in many applications, power modulators based on capacitor discharge are used, where the peak power is drawn from the input capacitor bank. In order to continuously recharge the energy buffer during operation at a lower average power, usually, power supplies connected to the mains are used. Due to the worldwide variation in mains voltages and the desired ability to adapt the capacitor voltage of the modulator, the power supply has to support a wide input and output voltage range, whereby the supply should draw a sinusoidal current from the mains due to EMI regulations. Additionally, depending on the modulator concept, a galvanic isolation also has to be provided. In order to achieve the mentioned specifications for the considered power supply, a combination of an ac–dc and a dc–dc converter is proposed, whereas the mains voltage is rectified by a three-phase buck–boost converter to 400 Vdc, and thereafter, an isolated dc–dc converter charges the input capacitor bank of the power modulator up to 3.5 kV. This paper focuses on the basic operation and the design of the 3.5-kV/11-kW isolated dc–dc converter, which includes transformer design, efficiency-volume optimization, and component selection. For electromagnetic emission applications that need a very high amplitude and an appropriate pulsewidth, a pulsed power supply based on multiple high-temperature superconducting pulsed power transformer (HTSPPT) modules is verified in this paper. First, the working processes of multiple HTSPPT modules are analyzed and two small experimental HTSPPTs are described in detail. Then, simulation is carried out to show the major pulse characteristics of two different discharge methods. To verify the feasibility of two discharge methods, high-current testing is carried out with the two HTSPPTs. The results show that a higher amplitude of current pulse can be achieved using synchronous parallel discharge and a larger pulsewidth of current pulse can be achieved using asynchronous parallel discharge. This paper describes a compact high storage density inductive–capacitive storage module. The module is based on high-power opening switches using inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices commutation principle and a high storage density Brooks inductor. These opening switches, being able to switch-OFF pulse currents up to 14.5 kA by the counter-current subcircuit, make use of the general property of a standard high-power thyristors impedance transition from closing state to blocking state. The experimental results show that with the primary capacitor and counter-current commutation subcircuit charged voltage 3 and 2.5 kV, respectively, the charged current of the Brooks-type inductor is about 14.5 kA, with a charged time of about 4.5 ms. The output peak current of the inductive storage module is about 21 kA. The total stored energy is about 54.9 kJ while the energy density of the inductor is approximately 6.69 MJ/ \textm^3 , which is not including the primary storage and commutation unit. A new design of powerful high-voltage high-current impulse source for nanosecond megavolt charging of short forming lines (SFLs) is proposed. The first stage of the device is based on inductive energy storage. It accumulates energy supplied by the current of magnetic flux compression generator (MCG), whereas the electro-explosive opening switch is used for the energy output into intermediate SFL. In the second stage, we use a Tesla transformer with oil insulation. The results of the earlier experimental study of submegavolt charging of intermediate forming line as well as the results of calculations of the two-stage facility given in this paper demonstrate the feasibility of the device based on MCGs for nanosecond charging of SFL up to about 3 MV. Explosive and electroexploded opening switches (EEOSs) are used for current sharpening of magnetocumulative generators (MCGs). The EEOSs are well studied both in calculations and experimentally; the explosive opening switches (EOSs) have been studied mostly experimentally. Calculation and theoretical studies of the explosive current opening switches have been carried out by means of phenomenological model building or in 2-D gas-dynamic approximation. The mentioned approaches have some limits, and they do not allow completely revealing the complicated pattern of physical phenomena taking place during the opening switch operation. Whereas it is necessary to optimize the EOSs, it is almost impossible to solve this problem completely at expensive full-scale explosive experiments. The 2-D numerical magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the processes is very close to the reality. This paper compares calculation and experimental data on the circuit breaking of the MCG using the explosive current opening switch with the ribbed barrier. Investigation results of the electric circuit parameters, opening switch construction, and linear density of the breaking current dependence on the load current pulse characteristics are presented. Possible reasons of differences in calculation and experimental results are shown; ways of improvement of the calculation model and opening switch optimization are outlined. This paper provides analysis of experiments aimed at defining the capabilities of plasma opening switch (POS) for energy transfer to a load of inductance comparable with the inductance of the energy store vacuum section. The analysis is performed using the substantiated technique that allows quantitative estimation of the POS efficiency. Under the same conditions with a conduction current of ∼1 MA and POS voltage of ∼1 MV, the energy transferred to the load depends strongly on the transmission line design. When the electrode gap in the line is ∼1 cm, the energy delivered to the load is ∼40 kJ. Increasing the gap to ∼4-cm increases this energy to ∼100 kJ. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The main characteristics of reversely switched dynistor (RSD) are infinite series, long lifetime, turning on in microseconds to nanoseconds, high-current rise rate (100 kA/\mus), and ability of passing through large current (several kiloamperes). With these advantages, RSD has a great potential of application in repetition rate pulsed power technology and the future HVdc field. To resolve the problem of residual voltage of RSD caused by insufficient precharge, which leads to nonuniform turn-on of RSD, this paper, based on the conduction mechanism of RSD devices, describes precharge circuit design requirements and establishes a second order circuit model to study the resonant triggering circuit of RSD. It is found that reducing precharge inductor can effectively increase precharge current, resulting in reducing the turn-on voltage of RSD. Finally, design for three improved circuit topologies (full-bridge, intense pulsed, and two-step triggering circuit) are presented and experiments show that these improved circuit topologies can enhance the precharge efficiency and reduce the turn-on voltage of RSD. SPHINX is a microsecond linear transformer driver located at Atomic Energy Comission (CEA) Gramat (France), which can deliver a current pulse of 6 MA within 800 ns in a Z -pinch load. Using the concept of the dynamic load current multiplier (DLCM), which was proposed by Chuvatin, we expect to increase the load current above 6 MA, while decreasing its rise time to \sim300 ns. The DLCM developed by the CEA Gramat and International Technologies for High Pulsed Power (ITHPP) is a compact system made up of concentric electrodes (autotransformer), a dynamic flux extruder (cylindrical wire array), a vacuum convolute (eight post-hole rods), and a closing switch (compact vacuum surface switch). The latter is a key component of the system, which is used to prevent the current from flowing into the load until the inductance builds up due to the implosion of the wire array. This paper presents the design and testing of the DLCM surface switch, resulting from both electrostatic simulations and experiments on the SPHINX generator. These studies, carried out either with or without load (open circuit), were valuable for a first experimental evaluation of the DLCM scheme in a microsecond regime and provided detailed information on the surface switch behavior. This paper presents a gate unit with short-circuit protection for a 4.5-kV press-pack insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) designed for pulsed applications and operated at a pulse current of 4 kA and the results of short-circuit tests performed with the mentioned switch and the gate unit. Initially, an overview of the gate unit, the implemented gate boosting as well as the two-stage turn-off and active clamping is given. An over-di/dt as well as an over-current detection using a printed circuit board (PCB) Rogowski coil is used in the gate drive to protect the IGBT during operation. Then, the design of the PCB Rogowski coil is introduced including partial element equivalent circuit simulations to predict the coil parameters. Measurements were made to verify these simulations. Afterward, two types of short-circuit tests were performed. First, the over-di/dt detection was tested by turn-on into a short circuit. The tests show that the over-di/dt detection reacts very fast. The IGBT was always able to turn off the short-circuit current. The maximum short-circuit current was 4.4 kA. Second, tests using an auxiliary switch were made to investigate the short-circuit events during pulse top. The IGBT was able to turn off a maximum short-circuit current of 8.7 kA. Inductive pulse power supplies are of interest because their energy densities are one order of magnitude higher than those of capacitive power supplies, based on the same power-output capacity. The Institute of Advanced Technology puts forward an inductive pulse power topology called the slow transfer of energy through capacitive hybrid (STRETCH) meat grinder. In this topology, an active switch is used to cut off the charging current. Limited by the current turning off ability of integrated gated commuted thyristor, it may encounter difficulties in extending to higher-energy systems. Other than that, the cost of the system is very high. In this paper, the principle of the STRETCH meat grinder is presented. Then, the STRETCH meat grinder with inverse current commutation with semiconductor devices (ICCOS), which is proposed by the Institute of Saint Louis, is presented. The process of ICCOS in the STRETCH meat grinder is illustrated in detail. Finally, simulations are made based on Simplorer 8 to explain how ICCOS works clearly. A preliminary discussion of how to design ICCOS is also presented. We conclude that the STRETCH meat grinder with ICCOS removes the limitations of the original one and has potential applications for high-energy systems in future and can cut down the cost greatly. A modular linear transformer driver (LTD) is a novel fast-discharge high-pulsed power source for primarily stored energy. In LTDs, a large number of stages (or cavities) can be connected in series or in parallel conveniently to directly generate high power pulses of 50–200 ns with the required voltage or current. This paper introduces an LTD stage developed by us recently. This LTD stage consists of 14 bricks in parallel. Each brick contains two 40-nF capacitors and a compact multigap gas spark switch in series. The switch is a modification of our original version, and the diameter and the height of which have been reduced to 98 and 127 mm, respectively. The circuit model of this stage is established in PSPICE, and its output parameters are obtained through simulation. Driving a rough-matched resistive load of 0.27 \Omega, its output current peak is 300 kA with an overall rise time of about 110 ns at a charged voltage of the capacitors of about \pm90 kV, agreeing well with its simulation result. This paper details the testing of a commercially available gate turn-off thyristor (GTO) for application in inductive-store power supplies. GTOs have been used as a component of inductive-store systems directly and as part of compound switches. These GTOs are generally available commercially and typically have extensive datasheets. Solid-state modulators based on pulse transformers offer the advantage that, with the turns ratio of the transformer, the primary voltage could ideally be adapted to available switch technology, and a series connection of switches could be avoided. To increase the power level, several semiconductor switches must be connected in parallel, and a balancing between the different switches must be guaranteed. Here, the matrix transformer concept, which is based on multiple primary and/or secondary windings, as well as flux adding, offers superior performance with respect to the achievable rise times. However, the influence of the parasitic elements on the voltage and current distribution is quite involved. In this paper, the influence of the parasitic elements of the matrix transformer on the current balancing and on the winding voltages is investigated based on reluctance models. Additionally, the inherent current balancing of the matrix transformer for windings mounted on different cores is explained. In this paper, a novel six-channels annular plasma-jet chamber is designed and embedded in the trigger electrode of the three-electrode gas switch to generate multichannel plasma jets without air flow, which is used to trigger the gas switch to form multichannel discharge.
