Negative-sequence current is required to be intentionally injected to support the power grid or compensate the imbalanced load in asymmetrical faults utilizing STATCOM. However, the extreme compensation range of negative-sequence current injection becomes complicated when grid voltage becomes asymmetrical. This article presents a novel off-line strategy for negative-sequence current compensation under two typical kinds of asymmetrical grid faults — single-phase voltage drop and double-phase voltage drop, with the following two benefits simultaneously: maximizing negative current compensation capacity; avoiding iterations and reducing computation burdens. In this paper, the mechanism of DC voltage balancing among three phases in STATCOM is analyzed and a new identification method of negative-sequence current compensation range is explored out. To simplify the calculation, this paper takes the ratio of negative-sequence reactive (Iq-) and active (Id-) current as a variable (s). In this way, the relationship between the extreme compensation range, asymmetrical voltage sag depth of power grid h is drawn with MATLAB. Different from the previous iterative method, the off-line identification method is applied to avoid huge iterations. By fitting the curve, the precise ranges of negative-sequence current compensation under different asymmetrical grid faults are approximated as simple polynomials, thus significantly reducing the computation burdens. Conventional half bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC) system will suffer great over-current when there is a dc side fault. Therefore, topology study in sub-modules with dc side fault blocking capability have become one of the hotspots in MMC field. However, fault blocking topologies using conventional IGBT devices must employ more semiconductors than half bridge topology. The extra semiconductor devices employed in the topology will lead to the increase of cost and conduction loss. To reduce the conduction loss of the fault blocking topology, a novel sub-module topology is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology employs reverse blocking devices to form the low conduction loss path. Conduction loss analysis is conducted in this paper to show the priority of the proposed topology. DC-DC converters are needed for the future development of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids, as they allow to interconnect lines with different voltages and topologies. The dc-dc converters can increase the grid controllability adding power flow control, voltage regulation and/or fault blocking capability. The dc modular multilevel converter (dc-MMC) is a non-isolated solution proposed to interconnect HVDC systems with the same line topology. This paper proposes a new dc-MMC with a control strategy, which allows the converter to interconnect different line topologies (e.g., rigid bipole connected to a symmetric monopole). The paper presents the different line topologies in HVDC installations. Then, a mathematical model with a variable transformation is proposed for the new dc-dc converter. A control structure is proposed and implemented in Matlab/Simulink using an average arm model and simplified dc grids. This paper analyzes high-frequency interactions between a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) grid resonances by studying their effect on the system stability. The recent appearance of converter-related instabilities due to high-frequency oscillations at the converter's ac side raises concerns about whether similar interactions can also take place at its dc side. To determine the risks imposed by such interactions within an HVDC grid, this paper assesses the impact of the MMC internal dynamics and dc system resonances on the stability using an analytical impedance-based method. The effect of fault current-limiting inductors, grid topology changes and transmission line length is investigated, indicating that these parameters considerably influence the electromagnetic characteristics of the HVDC grid and consequently the system stability. This paper presents the DC fault transient study of a meshed DC grid with high-temperature superconducting (HTS) HVDC cables to integrate offshore wind power. A four-terminal meshed DC grid model with a ±100 kV DC voltage rating is developed. DC circuit breakers (DCCBs) are implemented in the DC grid to deal with DC cable faults. To conduct the fault transient study, the fault scenarios with different fault locations and protection delays are studied. The sensitivity study versus different DC fault locations reveals that the faults on the faulted cable will not cause the quenching of healthy cables. The sensitivity study considering different DC fault protection delays demonstrates that the HTS cables have a current-limiting effect and the long delay of DC fault protection does not result in large fault current and the quenching of healthy cables. A novel single-stage doubly grounded transformerless inverter configuration which can buck-boost the output voltage is proposed in this paper. In this transformerless inverter configuration grid neutral is directly connected to PV panel negative rail which suppresses/eliminates the PV leakage currents. In addition, the tracking of maximum power point is possible for wide variation of weather conditions due to buck-boost voltage capability of inverter. Moreover, the proposed inverter topology has symmetrical operation in both half cycles hence injects negligible DC offset current in to the grid. Here the symmetrical operation of inverter is achieved due to one inductor is used for both half cycles of the grid. The proposed topology is realized using five switches, two of which work at 50 Hz and remaining three switches at high frequency which reduces overall semiconductor losses. Further, the proposed inverter topology is controlled through a newly developed modulation technique and possible working modes are analyzed and described thoroughly. For performance validation, the experimental analysis of grid connected proposed inverter is performed on a 1 kVA system and results show that proposed inverter feeds power in to the grid with lesser THD while achieving greater efficiency. The use of power converters as solid state transformers is an attractive solution to modernize the power network, but this solution has not been fully addressed for MV and HV substations. This paper presents a customized and simple control for the Modular Multilevel Matrix Converter (M3C), specially conceived for its operation on synchronous ports, which is the case of AC substations. The control allows bidirectional power transfer, generation/absorption of reactive power and provisions of ancillary services. The converter is compared to the back-to-back Modular Multilevel Converter (B2B-MMC) where the key performance indicators to carry out the comparison are power efficiency, number of semiconductor devices, passive components required, footprint, voltage cell balance, fault blocking capability and stress of components. The simulation results show the features, performance and attractiveness of the M3C topology in a 33/11 kV, 16 MW substation under different operating conditions, including grid faults and dynamic operation. The M3C presents similar efficiency and performance than the B2B-MMC, but it uses fewer semiconductor devices, passive components and total cell capacitor energy than the B2B-MMC, reducing cost and footprint. When a fault occurs on the dc side of the voltage source converter based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) transmission system, the fault current rises quickly due to the low damping of the dc system. Using a dc fault current limiter (DC-FCL) to limit the rise of the fault current can significantly reduce the breaking requirements of the DCCB. A topology of a bidirectional active dc fault current limiter (BA-FCL) based on coupled inductor is proposed in this paper. No expensive full-controlled power electronic devices are used in this topology. Only a few half-controlled power electronic devices are used to achieve active control of the current limiting unit. Compared with many topologies of current limiter at present, the fault current limiting effect of BA-FCL is improved significantly while the cost, volume, topology complexity, and control complexity are reduced. The stress analysis and parameter design of the proposed current limiter are carried out. This paper introduces a current differential protection scheme, appropriate for application in medium voltage active distribution systems, where it is desired to keep the greatest possible number of loads and DG units energized during a fault. Conventional two-terminal percentage current differential relays are used to form successive, time-current-coordinated, differential protection zones. Multiple time-delayed differential elements in each protection zone guarantee coordination with the zone's lateral protection devices, as well as between successive differential protection zones. Sensitive time-delayed differential elements protect against relatively high-resistance faults, while instantaneous differential elements minimize protection speed whenever possible. Additional emergency differential elements deal with post-fault topology changes and breaker failure conditions enhancing the overall scheme's performance. The proposed scheme is applied to a model of real medium voltage distribution system with distributed generation, considering a ring topology operation. The modular multilevel converter (MMC), owing to the presence of a large number of submodules (SMs) and energy storing elements, requires a large footprint and initial investment. To address these issues, this paper proposes the switched modular multilevel converter (SMMC). It consists of two major elements; the chain-links (CLs), consisting of cascade connection of SMs as in MMC, and the single-pole-triple-throw (SPTT) switches, which can be realized using either the T-type or NPC-type switch strings. The SMMC works on the principle of connecting all the phase-legs in series and their respective positions are mutually interchanged. It offers a compact structure as the SMs count is reduced to 33% of MMC, which results in a much lower energy storage requirement. Furthermore, it does not have inter-phase circulating current problem and hence the CL inductors can also be avoided. The SMMC structure, operating principles, control, and modulation schemes are explained in detail. A detailed comparison of SMMC with the other major existing converters is carried out to highlight the important features of SMMC. The efficacy of SMMC is validated using PSCAD simulation studies with a 19-level grid-connected SMMC model. As high-speed railways develop rapidly worldwide, the problems of neutral section and power quality are becoming increasingly prominent. These problems affect the normal operation of the power grid and the electric locomotives. The co-phase power supply schemes were proposed by researchers, which can solve these problems well. Among them, the MMC-based scheme (MMC-5 L) is a representative one. The existing scheme, when applied to the auto-transformer (AT)-fed system which is usually adopted by high-speed railways, needs to install an auto-transformer on the output side. To eliminate the auto-transformer and to obtain the more suitable and superior co-phase power supply schemes to AT-fed system, two improved schemes are proposed in this paper based on the novel MMC-based scheme (MMC-6 L) we proposed before. While establishing the mathematical model, creating the control system, and carrying out simulation verification of the proposed schemes, the proposed schemes are compared with MMC-6 L and MMC-5 L in terms of topological characteristics, control system complexity, power loss, and functionality. The results show that while the proposed schemes can fulfill the functions of the co-phase power supply scheme well like the MMC-5 L and MMC-6 L, they are more suitable and superior for the AT-fed system in terms of control system complexity and power loss. The safety of converters is key to the stable operation of AC/DC hybrid power grids after AC faults. Thyristor valve current is a direct manifestation of the converter observability, but there are no measuring elements inside the converter, so the thyristor valve current can be reflected only indirectly through external electrical quantities. This paper proposes a virtual measurement scheme based on the temporal features of the converter terminal current. First, under the action of the trigger pulse, the polarity characteristics of the AC current and temporal features between the valves are utilized to predictive estimate the valve state. Then, when commutation failures occur and the bypass paths form, the conduction state of valve is constructed based on the relationship between AC and DC current. Last, when the valve is to be shut-off in the bypass path, the blocking state of the valve is corrected based on the unidirectional conductance characteristics of the valve. According to the above analysis, combined with the topological current equation of the converter, the valve current can be calculated in the whole process. Through the simulation of the different valve states and bypass paths and analysis of the field record data, the results show that the valve current can still be accurately calculated based on the virtual measurement scheme. The advancements in smart grid technologies had brought forth the prospect of self-healing distribution grid through intentional islanding, aided by the steadily rising penetration of inverter-based distributed generations (IBDGs). Adaptive protection is the key enabler for this resilient grid architecture. For cost-effectiveness, overcurrent relays (OCRs) with adaptive features had been proposed, often with the sensitivity problem due to low short-circuit current magnitude from the IBDG taken into consideration and largely addressed. However, apart from this widely discussed sensitivity problem, there is an underlying issue on selectivity of the OCR which is frequently disregarded when designing an adaptive overcurrent protection scheme for IBDG dominated microgrid. This selectivity problem is mainly caused by the current diversion to load during fault, which is often disregarded when performing OCR grading for a conventional grid. In this paper, this selectivity problem of the OCR is discussed in depth through a comparative study of conventional grid and a modern IBDG dominated grid. The coordination time interval margin violations problems are demonstrated through theoretical calculations and real-time hardware-in-the-loop experiments. This research aims to provide better insights into the selectivity problem as a step towards achieving a cost-effective yet reliable overcurrent-based adaptive protection for IBDG dominated microgrid. Most microgrid protection schemes found in published literature suffer from a lack of generality in that they work well for the assumed topology, including type and placement of sources. Other generic protection schemes tend to be too complicated, too expensive, or both. To overcome these drawbacks, a topology-agnostic, scalable, and cost-aware protection based on fundamental principles that work in the presence of high penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) is developed and tested in this paper. The protection system also implements stable automatic reconfiguration of the healthy sections of the system after clearance of fault, thus increasing resilience by self-healing. To achieve this ambitious goal, stable inverter models are developed that operate in unbalanced networks in grid-connected and islanded modes, even with 100% IBRs, share power without conflicting controls, and can ride through faults while limiting fault currents. The scheme is tested for primary and backup protection and reconfiguration on the IEEE 123-node feeder in grid-connected and islanded modes with 15 IBRs connected to the system. This paper revisits the analysis of the well-known infeed effect on transmission lines distance protection. A new adaptive algorithm to overcome this drawback is proposed, which requires solely impedance data and the operational status of power apparatus to perform overreaching distance zones settings. A comparison of the proposed strategy and the traditional one is performed. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed settings ensure the correct operation of overreaching zones. Thereby, the backup coverage is improved significantly, besides avoiding distance zones overlapping between adjacent lines. Similar to the conventional three-phase parallel-connected MMC (PC-MMC), the three-phase series-connected MMC (SC-MMC) is a strong potential solution for high-voltage direct current (HVDC) applications. The study of SC-MMC focuses on the control strategy, neglecting its small-signal dynamics, not to mention its stability when interacting with the AC grid. Work on small-signal modeling of MMC is limited to parallel-connected configurations. SC-MMC differs from PC-MMC in structure and harmonic content; hence, it is necessary to establish an accurate model of SC-MMC according to its own characteristics. This paper introduces the circuit and control of SC-MMC and compares it with PC-MMC. Multi-harmonic linearization is used to establish the AC impedance model of SC-MMC over the whole control system, including the third harmonic suppression controller. We take a PC-MMC station of the Wudongde HVDC project as a benchmark to explore the potential application of SC-MMC when constructing new HVDC stations to extract power from an existing DC transmission corridor. The single-phase-to-ground (SPG) fault at the valve side of the converter transformer is one of the most critical faults threatening the operation of bipolar half-bridge modular-multilevel-converter-based multi-terminal direct-current (HB-MMC MTDC) systems. Following a valve-side SPG fault, the upper-arm submodule (SM) capacitors in the faulty converter may suffer a serious overvoltage, and the grid-side fault currents may experience no zero-crossings. The existing protection methods generally rely on tripping the grid-side alternate-current circuit-breaker (ACCB), which cannot fully isolate the fault. The healthy poles and stations may encounter severe disturbance and be all blocked, which will lead to a power outage of the entire MTDC system. This paper proposes an ACCB-independent scheme based on thyristor-pairs and damping SMs to address these problems. Antiparallel thyristor-pairs are connected in series within the upper and lower arms in each phase. Serial damping SMs are connected within the lower arms to help the lower-arm thyristor pairs cut off the fault currents. Although the proposed additional devices inevitably cause conduction losses, they can effectively protect the faulty converter and healthy circuit in the MTDC system. With the increasing number of controllable devices in the grid, devices owned by different entities are supposed to cooperatively support the grid operation. To balance the various interests of the customers and the utility, this paper proposes a two-level scheduling algorithm to address voltage regulation by coordinating the customer-owned battery energy storage system (BESS) and utility-owned load tap changers (LTCs) in power distribution systems. The objective is to find the optimal operation scheduling for both BESSs and LTCs that simultaneously maximize the economic payback and satisfy system operation rules. For BESSs, a local optimization problem is formulated in a chance-constrained manner in major consideration of the economic performance. For the utility interest, a Markov decision process (MDP) and a computationally efficient reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm are utilized to solve the optimal tap setting problem. To coordinate BESSs and LTCs, a global voltage adjustment is applied. Transformer-customer relationship identification refers to the determination of the physical connection relationship of electricity end-customers and their corresponding transformers. Such connection relationship is critical for distribution utilities to maintain their end-customer profiles. However, management of transformer-customer relationship becomes one of the most emerging challenges due to large number of end-customers and lack of measurement devices in low-voltage distribution systems. To address the above issue, this paper proposes an end-customer data-driven method to identify transformer-customer relationship in low-voltage distribution grid by utilizing the customer field data obtained from advanced metering infrastructure. Specifically, the incidence convolution identification method is proposed to build up the unique mapping relationship between end-customers and their transformers based on the principle of energy conservation. Then the voltage correlation maximization model based on Markov Random Field is proposed, where the voltage correlation matrix is exacted and combined with the adjacency matrix to establish an optimization model to correct the potential abnormal transformer-customer relationship. The HVDC systems have been employing modular multilevel converters (MMC) due to their unique high voltage high power potential. However, the lack of fault ride-through capability imposes restrictions on MMCs that are based on half-bridge (HB) modules. Since it is necessary to limit the fault currents to protect MMCs from serious short circuit faults against pole-to-pole DC fault, several protection schemes have been introduced to deal with the DC short circuit faults. This paper proposes a new hybrid MMC protective topology consisting of a combination of the HB and three-quarter-bridge (TQB) modules. The TQB behaves like an HB under normal operation and has low power losses compared to other protective topologies. Modulation and control of this configuration are like HB-based MMC. In the proposed hybrid protective topology, during a pole to pole DC fault, the fault current can be either blocked or be limited by TQB-SMs. Both simulations and experiments were performed to verify the operation of the suggested hybrid MMC in different modes of operation. Penetration of DC networks is rapidly increasing in modern power systems. As transient behavior of DC grids is different from that of AC ones, AC grid protection schemes might not be applicable to protect DC networks. Exact fault location is vital for protection of DC networks to reduce repair cost and achieve fast power recovery. This paper proposes a novel topology independent multi-terminal DC scheme to identify fault section and location for DC transmission systems. Voltage and current signals measured at the terminals are analyzed by the least squares error (LSE) algorithm. Then, the proposed scheme uses low frequency components of the signals to locate DC faults offline. Unlike some other methods, it does not require sophisticated sensors and hardware to capture very high frequency content of the signals. Hence, the proposed scheme can be implemented in practice without additional measuring infrastructure. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated under various fault conditions for different topologies of DC networks in both overhead lines and cables. Numerous simulations carried out demonstrate that the proposed scheme is quite accurate and provides excellent performance under different fault resistances, sections, and locations. The missing capability of DC fault current limitation is an inherent disadvantage in the typical half-bridge modular multilevel converter (MMC), which restricts its application in long-distance high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems. The full-bridge submodule (FBSM) and clamped double submodule (CDSM) topologies allow for fault current self-clearing, but also suffer from additional hardware cost and power losses. In this paper, an improved submodule topology utilizing the new reverse-blocking insulated gate bipolar transistor (RB-IGBT) is proposed to improve system economy without compromising its performance. The operating principles and DC fault characteristics of the proposed topology are analyzed in details, including comparison with various topologies in terms of cost, losses, fault current clearing speed and thermal. Compared with the traditional CDSM topology, the proposed RBSM can clear DC faults faster with reduced cost of switching devices. A DC fault protection strategy for MMC-HVDC system is also presented. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have been recognized as the most attractive technology for high voltage direct current (HVDC) applications during the last years. Their advantages include the ability to freely control the internally stored energy in the distributed submodules (SMs) and to independently control AC and DC powers. Recent studies showed that an MMC can take advantage of this degree of freedom to supply ancillary services with low energy requirements such as frequency response or power oscillation damping by connecting energy storage systems (ESSs) to its SM capacitors. This paper proposes a modular DC-DC converter as an interface between the energy storage element and the SM capacitor. As it can be built with switches allowing a high switching frequency, it is shown that the volume of the passive components can be reduced in comparison with interface converters known in the literature. The proposed control strategy avoids to transfer the harmonics of a SM to the ESS that prevents to drastically oversize the system. The proposed control method also provides an appropriate energy exchange without affecting the control philosophy of an MMC and it addresses balancing issues. Simulations and a downscaled prototype confirm the relevance of the proposed control. As the proposed interface converter is able to track the power reference with fast dynamics, it provides the same system-level advantages as other interface converters known in the literature but with a reduced volume. This paper presents a new power electronic topology for a STATCOM allowing the generation of multilevel AC voltages. This topology is characterized by a modular configuration since it uses two well known four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. A Scott transformer with multiple secondary windings connects the two four-leg inverters to the grid. One of the important features of the proposed power topology is the capability to generate AC voltages with high number of levels, in spite of using only two four-leg two-level voltage source inverters. To maximize the number of voltage levels a geometric progression ratio of 3 between the windings of the transformers connected in cascade is proposed. However, to reduce the turns-ratio span, alternatively a fractional geometric ratio of 1.5 is also proposed and analyzed. A control strategy adapted to the proposed power converter topology is also presented. Besides the control of the reactive power the regulation of the four-leg inverter DC voltage will also be considered. To support the theoretical studies and assumptions, simulations and experiments are presented. Experimental results were obtained using a low power laboratory prototype. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) has been widely used in the multi-terminal overhead line high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system due to its outstanding performance. However, the AC side and the DC side of MMC-HVDC have a strong interaction and will be affected by each other's faults, which brings the risk of system instability. In this paper, a modified MMC named active MMC with embedded energy storage in submodules (SMs) is proposed to isolate the impact of faults as a firewall. Firstly, the topologies of the active MMC and SMs with energy storage are introduced. Then the operation principle of the active MMC under different faults is analyzed in a multi-terminal MMC-HVDC system. Thirdly, the complete control scheme of the active MMC is proposed for bidirectional fault isolation. Finally, two main application scenarios of the active MMC are simulated in a three-terminal MMC-HVDC system and a particularly designed AC/DC hybrid transmission system respectively in PSCAD/EMTDC. The simulation waveforms of the active MMC are compared with the conventional MMC. The modular multilevel DC converter (M2DC) exploits the interleaving between the three legs of an MMC to realize a promising uninsulated DC/DC converter to interconnect HVDC grids. This paper details a current and energies decoupled model of the M2DC. The major idea proposed in this paper is focused on the full energy control generating optimal current references to minimize the internal currents magnitude. The energy sum and difference models are fully detailed. Both current and energy control loops are based on the model inversion principle in order to control all the state variables. The proposed control is based a dynamic control developed with the model inversion principle associated with an optimization of the current magnitude deduced from a quasi-static analysis. All dynamics of the system are then explicitly controlled, which guarantee a good dynamic behavior during the transient. Therefore, current and energy controls are presented in detail. DC technology has gained considerable interest in the medium voltage applications due to the benefits over the AC counterpart. However, to utilize the full capacity of this development, the selection of a suitable power electronic converter topology is a key aspect. From the pool of voltage source converters (VSC's), it is unclear which topology is suitable for multi-megawatt applications at medium voltage dc (MVdc) levels. To address this, the paper proposes a selection guideline based on reliability and optimum redundancy levels of VSCs for MVdc applications. This will be combined with other functional factors such as operational efficiency and return-on-investment. Three candidate multi-level topologies namely three-level neutral point clamped converter (3L-NPC), modular multi-level converter (MMC) and cascaded 3L-NPC (which is being used for the first MVdc link in the U.K.) have been evaluated over two-level-VSC from $\pm$ 10 kV to $\pm$ 50 kV. Energy management in modular type converters constitutes a key aspect of their operational stability. This paper introduces a full energy management structure for the Extended Overlap-Alternate Arm Converter (EO-AAC) ensuring both equal energy distribution across all six stacks and the maintaining of ripple-free DC current during steady state. The performance of the control structure against active power step events is validated by detailed simulations using EMTP-RV software. Moreover, the full energy management allows the EO-AAC to have an equivalent controllability to Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) through only two conducting stacks in overlap mode ensuring the power balance. From this observation, it is demonstrated that the use of control strategy like the virtual capacitor to support HVDC system, originally designed for MMC, is possible. This paper proposes an inequality constraints based method to efficiently and quickly estimate stability regions of droop control slopes for modular multilevel converter (MMC)-based multi-terminal dc (MTDC) systems. At first, a general small-signal model of the MMC-MTDC system is developed, which consists of the dc network and the MMCs with $dq$ controllers and multiple droop controllers. When deriving corresponding nonlinear state-space models, the edge-node matrix is introduced for the dc network modeling with arbitrary grid topology and transmission line model. Then, based on the eigenvalues sensitivity and the Taylor Series of eigenvalues, a set of inequality constraints are proposed to expeditiously estimate the suprema of the droop slopes and identify the droop slope stability regions for the MMC-MTDC system. To verify the state-space model, a comparison of dynamic responses between the math model calculation in MATLAB and the EMT simulation in PSCAD/EMTDC is conducted, which demonstrates the accuracy and the correctness of the developed small-signal model. The effectiveness of the proposed parameter stability region estimation method is demonstrated by several examinations including the supremum tests of droop slopes, the stability region sketches on accuracy, and the predicted unstable operations in PSCAD/EMTDC. The regulation of active power flowing through one or multiple DC lines plays an important role to guarantee secure and economic operations of high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids. This paper proposes a new method to regulate DC line power flow based on the adaptive DC voltage droop control strategy in which the voltage references of the voltage droop controllers vary autonomously at post-contingencies. The main advantage of the proposed method is that it can avoid installation of extra equipment and thus the associated losses and costs in the power-converter-based power flow control methods. The proposed control approach does not require to solve online global AC-DC power flow equations, leading to autonomous control. Furthermore, the adaptive droop control does not influence the stability of the HVDC grid since only the droop voltage references vary, but not the droop coefficients. Static analysis and dynamic simulations of a five-terminal HVDC grid are implemented using MATLAB/Simulink Simscape Blockset and OPAL-RT RT-LAB libraries to validate the effectiveness of the proposed autonomous control method. Hybrid circuit breaker (HCB) has shown good performance for interrupting dc fault current. However, a massive number of IGBTs in series is needed. These will lead to high costs and significant difficulty in balancing IGBT dynamic voltage. This paper proposes a bidirectional hybrid circuit breaker based on a cascaded half-bridge submodule structure to reduce the overall costs and implementation difficulty of HCB. The number of IGBTs is reduced by 50%, and the operating speed is fast enough. A model of a four-terminal modular multilevel converter (MMC) system with a proposed hybrid circuit breaker in different stages is developed to describe the fault blocking process more clearly. This paper proposes a delta-connected Modular Multilevel STATCOM with partially rated storage (PRS-STATCOM), capable of providing both reactive, and active power support. The purpose is to provide short-term energy storage enabled grid support services such as inertial, and frequency response, either alongside or temporarily instead of standard STATCOM voltage support. The topology proposed here contains two types of sub-modules (SM) in each phase-leg: standard sub-modules (STD-SMs), and energy storage element sub-modules (ESE-SMs) with a dc-dc interface converter between the SM capacitor, and the ESE. A control structure has been developed that allows energy transfer between the SM capacitor, and the ESE resulting in active power exchange between the converter, and the grid. Injecting $\text{3}^{rd}$ harmonic current into the converter waveforms can be used to increase the amount of power that can be extracted from the ESE-SMs, and so reduce the required ESE-SMs fraction in each phase-leg. Simulation results demonstrate that for three selected active power ratings, 1 pu, $\frac{2}{3}$ pu, and $\frac{1}{3}$ pu, the fraction of SMs that need be converted to ESE-SMs are only 69%, 59% & 38%. Network topology identification (TI) is an essential function for distributed energy resources management systems (DERMS) to organize and operate widespread distributed energy resources (DERs). In this paper, discriminant analysis (DA) is deployed to develop a network TI function that relies only on the measurements available to DERMS. The propounded method is able to identify the network switching configuration, as well as the status of protective devices. Following, to improve the TI resiliency against the interruption of communication channels, a quadratic programming optimization approach is proposed to recover the missing signals. By deploying the propounded data recovery approach and Bayes’ theorem together, a benchmark is developed afterward to identify anomalous measurements. This benchmark can make the TI function resilient against cyber-attacks. Having a low computational burden, this approach is fast-track and can be applied in real-time applications. Sensitivity analysis is performed to assess the contribution of different measurements and the impact of the system load type and loading level on the performance of the proposed approach. Increasing operational flexibilities of power system devices and generation/load components have intensified the dynamic changing of power network topologies. Dynamic Topology Awareness (DTA) with limited measurements are vital for subsequent analyses and operations of power distribution networks. Considering the economical limitation of extensive installations of PMUs, thus, we proposed in this paper a DTA method through capturing perturbations in voltage amplitude covariance matrix with statistical inference model that considering non-Gaussian noise and requiring only synchronous measurements of voltage amplitudes. The method was developed and proved to be robust without preconditions of Gaussian noises which is more accordant with practical circumstances. In high power applications, 3-phase ac/dc Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) are paralleled to increase the overall aggregated converter power rating, effective switching frequency and control bandwidth. For this, interleaved Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) and current limiting paralleling inductors are required. Interphase Transformers (ITRs) are often used for the converter paralleling because they provide large magnetizing inductances for the currents flowing between the converters while introducing negligible leakage inductances for the currents flowing from the converters to the ac grid. This large asymmetry in the inductance values makes it difficult to independently control active power flows in the individual converters. Thus, if the converters dc buses are not mutually interconnected, instabilities in active control of balance of converter dc bus voltages can occur in certain operational conditions. This paper presents a theoretical analysis of the active power flows produced by the currents flowing among the converters and explains origins of potential instability in the active control of balance of dc bus voltages in multi-converter systems with floating dc buses, paralleled using the ITRs. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) based medium voltage DC (MVDC) distribution system has become a promising option in the future smart grid architecture due to many distinguishing features. However, MMC-MVDC distribution system is prone to face the short-term outage problem during bipolar DC faults, so how to implement DC fault ride-through (FRT) capability for MMC-MVDC is still a challenge. This paper intends to change the redundant half-bridge submodules (HBSMs) of the HB-MMC into the redundant full-bridge submodules (FBSMs), thus, a practical DC FRT method is proposed by using the combination of the hybrid MMC and the hybrid DC circuit breakers (CBs) for the MMC-MVDC system. Then, the DC fault current characteristics of the MMC with the proposed FRT method are discussed. Lastly, data analysis and simulations of a three-terminal MMC-MVDC system have been performed in PSCAD/EMTDC to validate the effectiveness of the proposed DC FRT method. Modular multilevel converter (MMC) based high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system is one of the important development trends of DC power grid. After fault isolation, the traditional reclosing method of MMC-HVDC system is directly reclosing DC circuit breaker (DCCB). Once the fault point still exists, DCCB will be tripped again. This method will make the DC system suffer from the secondary strike of fault in a short time, and seriously endanger the service life of DCCB. In order to overcome the drawbacks of the traditional reclosing schemes, this paper proposes a novel adaptive reclosing scheme based on pulse injection from parallel energy absorption module. When dc fault current is interrupted by DCCB, the fault energy stored in current-limiting reactors (CLR) and dc lines is transferred to energy absorption module automatically. By switching on IGBTs embedded in absorption module for a short time, a voltage pulse is injected directly into the faulty line without interference from CLR. Then the nature of fault is identified and the fault distance can also be calculated in the case of permanent faults. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed reclosing scheme. DC transformer is an essential equipment for formation of multi-voltage-level DC grid. This paper proposes a novel non-isolated Boost-type alternate arm DC transformer (Boost-AADCT) for medium- and high-voltage level DC grid application. The Boost-AADCT is comprised of three submodule-cascaded arms, two thyristor-cascaded director switches, and two buffer capacitors. Bidirectional power transmission is achieved by alternatively charging and discharging of the intermediate arm following the Boost principle, while the pulsating power component caused by intermittent transmission is actively smoothened by grid-side buffer subcircuits formed by the buffer capacitors and grid-side arms. The active power buffering method increases the tolerance range of voltage ripple of the buffer capacitor, and the required energy storage capacity is resultantly reduced. Circuit configuration, operation principle, and mathematical model are first introduced. Then, the control strategy is proposed, the main circuit parameters are designed, and bidirectional fault-blocking capability is analyzed. Comparison with other DC-DC converters shows that the Boost-AADCT significantly reduces the requirement of semiconductors and has relatively lower synthetic cost. modular multilevel matrix converter (M3C) has considerable application potential in motor driving and power systems, but its phasor model is rarely studied. This paper proposes a novel method for modelling and analysis of the M3C in the phasor domain. Firstly, an improved phasor method in matrix form is proposed for direct AC/AC MMC family. By including the frequency information into the phasor expression, it is capable of analysis towards interaction between AC variable groups with different frequencies. Secondly, based on the proposed phasor matrix method, the concept of two-dimensional phase-sequence is proposed to facilitate description and calculation of the AC variables in the 3-by-3 matrix-resembled circuit structure of M3C. Network of each phase-sequence is also derived. With the proposed methods, calculation burden for modelling and analysis of the M3C is significantly reduced. Then, the phasor model of M3C considering the DC, fundamental frequency and 2nd-order harmonic components is established. Finally, validation results with time-domain simulation is provided. Recently the hybrid multi-port DC circuit breaker (MP-DCCB) is becoming popular in protecting HVDC grids, thanks to their reduction of power electronics devices. In this paper, an enhanced multi-port current-limiting DCCB (MP-CLCB) for multiple line protection is proposed. The integrated fault current limiter (FCL) inside the MP-CLCB can clear the fault faster with slightly increased costs. To reduce the energy dissipation requirement for the surge arresters caused by the newly added current-limiting path, an energy transfer path which provides a loop with the inductors during the current decay stage is designed. The theoretical analysis of the pre-charging, current-limiting, fault interruption and energy dissipation of the MP-CLCB is carried out. Moreover, the design principles of the energy dissipation and the key parameters of the MP-CLCB are provided. The proposed approaches are verified through simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC. High-voltage direct-current system based on modular multilevel converter (MMC-HVDC) is widely expected to plays a significant role in promoting the development of large-scale offshore wind power. The maximum current limit of insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is the main constrain for MMC-HVDC to operate in large current operation, while DC-fault blocking ability and economy are the two important concerns of MMC-HVDC. This paper proposes a novel parallel multiple submodule (PM-SM) topology to realize parallel output of submodule currents, which make MMC capable of large current operation and have filtering effect on high frequency harmonics. Combining with carrier phase-shift modulation or nearest level modulation, the frequency multiplication of bridge arm current of MMC can be realized to further improve the power quality of the system. Considering the demand of DC-fault blocking ability, simplified full-bridge double submodule (S-FBDSM) is also proposed as an economical option to compose PM-SM. It can provide double the reverse capacitance voltages in the arm current path regardless of a positive or negative arm fault current. The hybrid modular multilevel converter (HMMC), consisting of half-bridge and full-bridge submodules (SMs), has become a competitive topology due to the DC fault ride-through capability (FRTC). Redundancy schemes need to be employed to improve the reliability, including fixed-level and voltage-sharing active schemes, as well as passive scheme. However, different schemes affect reliability differently, which entails specific models. The contributions of this paper involve that analytical reliability models of HMMCs are proposed with considerations of voltage stress in active scheme, as well as imperfect bypass switch in passive scheme, and the comparison of different schemes is conducted to help the redundancy design. The reliability of HMMCs is divided into basic and extra components by the requirement of FRTC, which are modeled through the Markov chain and iteration method. A case study is conducted to validate the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed models, and the reliability analysis is presented, together with comparisons of different redundancy schemes. The results illustrate that reliability improvements of both fixed-level mode and passive scheme are prone to suffer saturation effect with the increase of redundant half-bridge SMs, which may even cause reliability decline in voltage-sharing mode. Recently, the idea of combining both thyristors and IGBTs in a voltage-source converter (VSC) structure has gained significant research interests for HVDC applications. The main objectives of deriving these topologies are to achieve forced-commutation of thyristors, increased efficiency, reduced energy-storage requirement and dc-fault tolerance besides retaining the VSC control flexibility. A novel topology named ‘thyristor-augmented modular bridge converter’ (TAMBC) is proposed in this paper. Each TAMBC phase contains four chain-links comprising of series-connected stacks. Each stack contains a parallel connection of an IGBT-based submodule-branch and a thyrsitor-branch. A control technique is developed that allows the main current to flow primarily through the thyrsitor-branch to achieve higher efficiency. In each phase of TAMBC, two chain-links generate the required ac voltage in the first half-cycle and are bypassed through thyrsitor-branch during the next half-cycle. Consequently, it enables current distribution among the chain-links resulting in reduced capacitors size and enhanced efficiency. The ability of TAMBC-HVDC systems to function over a wide operating range, to ride-through ac faults and to provide independent active and reactive power control are verified using PSCAD. DC ice melting is an effective technical method against ice disaster on transmission lines. To satisfy the demand for simultaneous de-icing and reactive power compensation for substations, this paper proposed a large-capacity low-cost DC deicer with reactive power compensation, which is mainly composed of rectifier transformer, Static Var Generator (SVG) and diode rectifier. In the proposed topology, SVG and diode rectifier share the rectifier transformer, but rectifier transformer capacity is not increased compared with a single deicer. This paper firstly presents the proposed topology and analyzes its advantages. Then, the rectifier transformer design is introduced, and the SVG control strategy is presented. Simulation results for the proposed device are presented, and an engineering devices with a capacity of 21.8 MVA developed for the 220 kV Fuchong substation is described. The high-speed accurate electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation of the power electronic transformers (PET) has become a challenge, due to the microsecond-range time steps and the large number of high-frequency semiconductor switches and isolating transformers. Taking the input-series-output-parallel (ISOP) connected cascaded H-bridge (CHB) type dual active bridge (DAB) based PET as an example, this paper proposes a general high-speed equivalent EMT modelling method of PET. First, the isolating transformer within each DAB is discretized into two-port Norton circuits. Second, each CHB-DAB is equivalent to two single-port circuits by eliminating the internal nodes. And the input-side is represented by a Thévenin circuit and the output-side is represented by a Norton circuit. Third, all the CHB-DABs are equivalent to a two-port circuit with all the internal node information preserved. Fourth, the implementation of PET blocking is also considered for startup and fault protective actions. Fifth, the stability of the proposed discrete decoupling method of the PET is verified that it does not introduce specific limitation on the simulation step size. Finally, the developed PET models on PSCAD/EMTDC are shown to be two orders of magnitude faster than the currently available fully-detailed models with negligible loss of accuracy. This paper proposes a DC Circuit Breaker (DCCB) topology for the DC fault clearance of the Modular Multilevel Converter based High Voltage Direct Current (MMC-HVDC) grid. By utilizing the voltage clamping and current limiting functions of the pre-charged capacitors in the DCCB, the DC-side short-circuit fault is isolated. First, the topological mechanism and operational principle of the unidirectional topology are analyzed, and the bidirectional topology is provided for backup protection. Then, the residual energy dissipation branch of the DC transmission line is introduced and the reclosing strategy after the deionization process is provided. Further, a step-insert method of the clamping branch is designed to relieve the sudden change of the electrical stresses during the voltage clamping based fault clearance process. Compared to the conventional DCCB schemes, the main advantage of the proposed topology is the decoupling of fast fault isolation and slow energy dissipation processes, which will accelerate the power recovery speed of the healthy parts of the HVDC grid. This paper presents an augmented design method for the dc/dc modular multilevel converter considering the control (e.g., the phase difference between arms ac voltages) and hardware aspects (e.g., type and number of submodules (SMs)) of the converter simultaneously. The proposed augmented design determines the number of SMs and their types (e.g., half- or full-bridge) in each arm and phase difference between arms ac voltages that minimize the total converter losses. Computationally-efficient analytical and semi-analytical methods are proposed to estimate the conduction and switching losses. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the losses obtained from the proposed analytical and semi-analytical methods are compared with the results of the detailed converter switching model implemented in the Simulink environment. The performance of the converter designed by the augmented approach is compared with the conventional topology in terms of total losses and the number of SMs. The comparative study showed that the proposed design method yields a converter with lower total losses and number of SMs. Moreover, the proposed design method extends the operation regime of the converter, especially when the dc links voltage levels are close; this extension is not possible in the conventional modular dc/dc converter. In this paper, a novel hybrid-arm modular multilevel converters (HA-MMCs) topology with DC low voltage operation and fault ride-through capability is proposed for unidirectional HVDC bulk power transmission. The HA-MMCs topology is a combination of two types of converter arms: the half-bridge sub-module based arm (HBSM-arm) and the diagonal bridge sub-module based arm (DBSM-arm). Replacing the traditional HBSM-MMC, the HA-MMCs are operated in current and reactive power control modes during normal conditions and can work as the rectifier or the inverter. Since the DBSM can provide bipolar voltages with unipolar currents, the HA-MMCs need not change its control strategy under DC low voltage conditions caused by the high-impedance faults. Under DC pole-to-pole or pole-to-ground faults, the HA-MMCs can both clear the DC fault current and work as the static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to provide reactive power to support the AC grid. Compared with other MMC topologies with DC fault ride-through capability, the HA-MMCs topology is more economical for significantly decreasing the number of power devices. The operation states, control strategy and DC low voltage operation capability of the HA-MMCs are presented and simulation results of the LCC-HA-MMC hybrid system using PSCAD/EMTDC validate the characteristics and advantages of the HA-MMCs. Pole-to-pole dc short circuit fault blocking capability is a major concern when modular multilevel converters (MMCs) are applied in high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission systems. Traditional MMCs based on half-bridge submodules (HBSMs) cannot block the fault current, thus needing expensive direct current circuit breakers (DCCBs). There are MMCs based on improved submodule topologies that can block dc faults, but usually with significantly increased device cost. This paper proposes an improved HBSM-based MMC (HB-MMC) which needs fewer extra semiconductor devices. The improved HB-MMC is more competitive than other schemes when it comes to investment cost and loss. An H-bridge circuit composed of two director switches and two diode valves is installed around one arm of the HB-MMC, which will not change the direction of current during the normal operation, whereas it can change the direction of the fault current when a pole-to-pole dc short circuits fault is detected. After two director switches have been turned off, a reverse-biased voltage provided by one arm can block the fault current. This paper proposes a DC/DC current flow controller (CFC) for meshed high voltage direct current (HVDC) grids. The CFC has the advantage of a simplified structure that allows us to use the minimum number of switches when unidirectional current flows through the DC lines are expected. An extended CFC topology that is able to operate with all possible current flows is also presented. Then, the operating principle of the CFC is discussed and its structure is compared with a dual H-bridge analyzing advantages and disadvantages.
