This paper describes a flow control of the dye in the paper mill with the quasi-Z-source indirect matrix converter (QZSIMC) fed induction motor drive. More than a decade the voltage-source inverter (VSI) and current-source inverter (CSI) have been used to control the speed of the induction motor, which in turns controls the flow of dye. Recently, the matrix converter (MC) has been an excellent competitor for the VSI or CSI for its compactness. The voltage transfer ratio of the VSI, CSI, and MC has been limited to 0.866. Thus, the efficiency of these converters is less. To improve the voltage transfer ratio the quasi-Z-source network (QZSN) is to be used between voltage source and indirect MC (IMC). The modification in the shoot-through duty ratio of the QZSN varies the voltage transfer ratio greater than 0.866. Different voltage transfer ratios are needed for different voltage sag conditions. For a variation of the duty ratio of the QZSN, the fuzzy logic controller has been presented. To control the IMC vector control with space vector modulation has been presented. This paper proposes the implementation of QZSIMC adjustable speed drive for the flow control of dye in paper mill during different voltage sag conditions. A 4-kW prototype has been built and the effectiveness of the proposed system is verified with simulation results and experimental setup. Simulation is done in MATLAB, Simulink platform. Experimental setup is done with the aid of a TMS320F2812 (Texas Instrument) processor. The experimental results validate the maintenance of the speed of an induction motor at the set condition, thus controlling the perfect flow of dye in paper manufacturing technology. Voltage-controlled three-phase three-leg inverters are widely applied in various occasions. The inverters are generally switched to the current-controlled mode to limit the fault currents when short-circuit faults happen. Under symmetrical fault, the inverter can be controlled as a symmetrical, three-phase current source. However, the voltage limiting will happen under asymmetrical fault. As a result, the fault phase currents will be distorted and cannot be completely controlled. Considering that the voltage limiting is mainly caused by large load impedance of healthy phase under asymmetrical fault, the voltage limiting is avoided by paralleling the virtual impedance with the output filter capacitor in this paper. As a result, the current limiting loop is not broken and the fault phase currents can be effectively controlled. The implementation of virtual impedance in control system and the influence of virtual impedance on the stability of system are also analyzed in detail in this paper. The dual-active bridge (DAB) topology is commonly preferred in bidirectional applications due to several attractive features, including auto-adjust of power flow, galvanic insulation, wide voltage gain, and zero voltage switching (ZVS) capability over some power ranges. However, the efficiency of the converter drops at light loads because the ZVS range is directly dependent on the circulating current. Assuming that the processed power is variable, the DAB converter's design must find a compromise between extending ZVS ranges and reducing the reactive power processing to ensure higher efficiency. Aiming this compromise, many papers propose hybrid approaches in which the modulation strategy is selected according to the processed power. However, this is not a simple solution because it demands multivariable control and offline optimizations. This paper proposes a modulation strategy to ensure ZVS and reduce the circulating current for the DAB converters. While the usual phase-shift modulation provides ZVS operation in a range of 40% to 100% of rated power, the proposed asymmetrical pulse-width modulation can obtain ZVS operation in a range of 2% to 100% of rated power. In recent years, very high frequency (VHF) converter has attracted much attention. However, with rich parasitic parameters and complex resonance links, there are some great difficulties to the modeling of such systems. Taking the on-off controlled VHF resonant boost converter as an example, this paper presents an accurate modeling and analysis method that considers multiple parasitic parameters. First, the closed-loop VHF converter system is divided into a main network and a parasitic oscillation network. Then, based on the operation analysis, an equivalent circuit model characterized by a time-varying input voltage source and two variable duty-cycle controlled switches is proposed. It worth noting that both the time-varying input and the controlled switches take into account the influences of the parameters. Furthermore, the periodic approximate analytical solution of the output voltage in the on stage is obtained by using the equivalent small parameter method to the proposed circuit model. And then combining the solution of the parasitic oscillation network and on-off state switching conditions, the steady-state waveform of output voltage can be obtained quickly. In many papers, random modulation of power electronic converters is described as an electromagnetic interference (EMI) mitigation technique, which contributes to the assurance of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of systems consisting of power electronic converters and serial transmission-based control and measuring devices. However, experimental results as well as theoretical analyses of physical phenomenon suggest that the EMI reduction is ostensible and results from the measuring procedure adopted in standards. This article presents the first known approach to compare the influence of deterministic and random modulation of transmission errors rate in serial communication systems. The comparison is based on the especially developed mathematical models, which are validated experimentally, using a simple setup with a dc/dc converter injecting a noise into the USB/RS232 converter representing a serial transmission scheme. The comparison reveals that for the studied switching frequency range from 10 kHz to 1 MHz, on average, there is no significant difference between random and deterministic modulations with respect to the probability of error rate in serial communication systems. The bidirectional CLLC resonant converter has distinguished potential in battery chargers and energy storage systems for its advantages in soft switching and bidirectional power flow capability. However, traditional CLLC converters generally adopt symmetrical design to maintain bidirectional symmetrical characteristics, which means the secondary LC network is designed to be equal to the primary LC network after reflection. The symmetrical design is only suitable for voltage grade matching scenarios where a wide voltage range is not required, such as CLLC-type dc transformers. Whereas in the field of bidirectional chargers, due to the wide voltage range of battery, there are significant differences in the characteristics required between charging and discharging mode, which makes symmetrical design no longer applicable. To cope with this issue, this paper proposes a novel design methodology of CLLC based on parameter equivalent and time domain model. With the parameter equivalent principle, the CLLC resonant tank with arbitrary parameters is investigated to satisfy the requirements of wide voltage range for bidirectional charger application. Compared with the symmetrical design, the proposed method can meet the requirements of bidirectional gain within preset frequency range and guarantee the achievement of zero-voltage switching under required load conditions with the minimum reactive power. In addition, the area product capacity of the magnetic part of the CLLC resonant tank is minimized based on the parameter equivalent principle. As a flexible and reliable way for distributed energy consumption and integration, the converters-dominated microgrid has attracted more and more attention recently. Owing to the low inertia and high nonlinearity of power converters, the islanded microgrid under large-signal disturbances is easily suffer to transient stability problems. To support the stable operation of microgrid, grid-forming converters are extensively investigated and applied. In this paper, an improved equal area criterion (IEAC) is proposed for the transient stability analysis of a simple microgrid equipped with both grid-following and grid-forming converters. Firstly, a simplified second-order model of the microgrid is established, which contains a nonlinear damping term relying on the power angle. Then, the limitation of conventional equal area criterion (EAC) for transient stability analysis is revealed, which completely ignores the unfavorable influence of negative damping and may lead to erroneous judgement. To fill this gap, an improved equal area criterion is proposed to derive the transient stability conditions for islanded microgrid, which could improve the estimation accuracy of stability boundaries. Moreover, impacts of system parameters and controller parameters on transient stability are studied, which provides useful guidelines for the parameter optimization of grid-forming and grid-following converters. The increased power and voltage ratings of semiconductors fosters the use in medium voltage components, such as ac–dc converters. With a bipolar medium frequent rectangular (MF RECT) voltage, the converter size can be reduced and the efficiency increased. Possible insulating materials for medium voltage transformers are oil and insulation paper. The breakdown voltage of insulation materials is depending on the frequency and the shape of the voltage curve. Until today, only a few investigations of the breakdown voltage of insulating materials at sinusoidal and RECT voltages up to a few tens of kilohertz have been published. To design and optimize MF transformers at RECT voltages, further investigations are necessary. Therefore, a test bench for measuring the breakdown voltage at RECT voltages in the frequency range between one and ten kilohertz up to several tens of kilovolts is developed. The test bench is inspired by a Marx generator, which is a high voltage source for impulse voltages. By substituting resistances and spark gaps by IGBTs and adding galvanically insulated power sources, a medium frequent bipolar voltage can be generated. The test bench is characterized with respect to slew rate, input power, frequency, and voltage amplitude. This article develops a series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters to realize additional voltage pumping and high power density through two propositions. Proposition 1 develops two improved positive- and negative-connected Z-source dc–dc converters (IPZSC and INZSC), using the same number of components as in the existing voltage pumping Z-source converter. Based on Proposition 1, Proposition 2 proposes four novel embedded Z-source dc–dc converters (EZSCs) by placing the source in a specifically designed position, which realizes lower voltage stresses across capacitors. Various technical aspects of the proposed EZSCs, including operations, power losses, and small signal stability analyses are detailed in this paper. Besides, comparisons between the proposed series of improved Z-source dc–dc converters and other existing Z-source dc–dc converters are thoroughly made to demonstrate the better performance of the EZSCs. This paper investigates the operation of the back-to-back neutral point clamped (BTBNPC) converters when the ac voltages on both ends are asynchronous. The zero-sequence injection (ZSI) technique has been used to extend the linear modulation range of the pulsewidth modulation operation. This paper investigates the ZSI of the BTBNPC to maximize the dc-bus voltage utilization while the ac voltages of both ends have different magnitudes and phases. This study further explores the reactive current injection to reduce the risk of overmodulation when grid voltages surge. The combination of these techniques can extend the operation range of the BTBNPC over varying ac voltages of both ends with the available dc-bus voltage. Recently, multiple static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) units have been adopted in power transmission systems in order to obtain a better voltage regulation and to share loads. However, they could possibly interact in a negative way instead of helping each other, due to the improper design of the STATCOM controllers. To analyze this problem, a d–q frame impedance-based stability analysis was used to explore the instability with the presence of STATCOMs, where previous stability-related findings are not applicable directly because of some unique features of STATCOMs. This paper identified the frequency range of interactions in a viewpoint of d–q frame impedances and pinpointed that the ac voltage regulation was the main reason of instability, masking the effects of phase-locked loop on power transmission systems. In addition, due to the high impedance of STATCOMs around the frequency range of interactions, the number of connected STATCOMs was the main contributor to stability instead of the topology of power systems or the locations of STATCOMs. A scaled-down 2-STATCOM power grid was built to verify the conclusions experimentally. This paper proposes a novel polygonal voltage space vector structure (SVS) having 30 sides, for a star-connected induction motor drive. The SVS eliminates the presence of harmonics up to 25th order from motor phase voltage throughout the entire modulation range, providing a torque profile devoid of lower order pulsations. Linear modulation is extended till 99.63% of base speed without exceeding the motor phase voltage rating. Topology consists of a dc-link fed primary inverter and two equal low voltage modular capacitor fed secondary inverters. Here the harmonics generated by the primary inverter is canceled by the secondary inverter which acts as a switched capacitive filter. Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) can be configured to perform ac/ac conversion, which makes them suitable as railway power supplies. In this paper, a hierarchical control scheme for ac/ac MMCs for railway power supplies is devised and evaluated, considering the requirements and the operating conditions specific to this application. Furthermore, admittance models of the ac/ac MMC are developed, showing how the suggested hierarchical control scheme affects the three-phase and the single-phase side admittances of the converter. These models allow for analyzing the stability of the interconnected system using the impedance-based stability criterion and the passivity-based stability assessment. The series bridge converter (SBC) is a modular multilevel converter (MMC) recently developed to enhance power density in high-voltage high-power applications. The MMC is a well-established solution, widely researched, and exploited in practical HVdc connections, thanks to its high power quality and high efficiency. However, the main limitation of the MMC is the relatively large energy storage, also due to the fact that power ripples in the submodule capacitors include a component at the fundamental ac frequency. As a result, volume becomes critical in applications such as offshore or city center in-feeds, where space is restricted and expensive. The SBC offers a more compact footprint by exploiting a series connection on the dc side and by operating the submodules with rectified waveforms, thus moving the minimum component of the instantaneous power to twice the ac fundamental and reducing capacitors size. The drawback of the converter is a more complex energy control compared to the MMC. This paper proposes the first experimental validation of the SBC, using a 2-kW laboratory-scale prototype. This paper proposes short circuit and overload gate-driver dual-protection scheme based on the parasitic inductance between the Kelvin- and power-source terminals of high-current SiC mosfet modules. The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the two schemes in question, including worst-case analysis used to assess their parametric dependence due to manufacturing tolerances and temperature variations, as well as the in-depth design procedure that can be generally applied to any power module containing a Kelvin-source. For verification, a compact 1.2-kV, 400-A half-bridge module integrating the two protection circuits was developed. The results obtained demonstrate a response time within tens of nanoseconds, and effectively validate their functionality under short circuit and overload scenarios. Finally, a 100-kW, 400-V dc three-phase voltage-source inverter was used to demonstrate the gate-driver with integrated protection functions under 105°C ambient temperature conditions. This paper proposes a pulsewidth modulation (PWM) control strategy for the efficient operation of the three-phase three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverters based on a bootstrap gate drive circuit. The bootstrap circuit used in the three-level NPC inverter has advantages in terms of the cost reduction and the compact circuit design. However, the bootstrap circuit has a drawback due to the low gate-emitter voltage during the low-frequency and variable load condition of the inverter system. This problem leads to lower efficiency and reliability of the inverter. Therefore, this paper analyzes the causes of the voltage decrease in bootstrap capacitors and proposes PWM control strategy to increase the voltage level of bootstrap capacitors for the efficient operation of the inverter. The proposed PWM control strategy provides efficient and stable operation of the inverter system by selecting the unipolar, dipolar, or partial-dipolar modulation methods according to the fundamental output frequency and load current of the inverter system. Furthermore, this paper proposes a design method of the size of bootstrap capacitors for the optimal circuit design. In this paper, a dynamic model based on the sampled-data method is presented for a wireless power transfer (WPT) system. The orders of the derived model are equal to the orders of a system. The modeling is different from the existing dynamic modeling for WPT systems, which almost double the model's order. Furthermore, the systematic analysis process is suitable for any WPT topologies and without the higher harmonics neglected and low-frequency approximation. Meanwhile, the state variables are allowed to vary up to twice the switching frequency, since the half-period symmetry property is exploited. In this paper, the series–series (SS) compensated WPT system is chosen as an example and the large-signal model and the steady-state operation point are determined. The small-signal responses perturbed by the phase-shift angle, switching frequency, and input voltage are obtained. The derived model is more adequate with simulation and experimental validation. Active damping is a common way to stabilize the current control of LCL-filtered converters. In this paper, the stable region of −180° phase crossing is first identified within a predefined range of grid impedance and LCL parameter variations. Once the phase of the current control loop is in the identified region, a stabilization control can be attained. Subsequently, digital filters can be adopted to achieve active damping by reshaping the open-loop phase. Various digital filters are selected and benchmarked in this paper. It is confirmed that the all-pass filter has a unity gain and adjustable lagging phase before the Nyquist frequency, thereby being a promising solution to the phase reshaping. Therefore, the all-pass filter is employed to move the phase of the open-loop control (i.e., −180° phase crossing) into the targeted region for active damping. Notably, the current controller and the all-pass filter-based active damping can be separately designed, indicating the easy implementation of the active damping. Experimental tests demonstrate that the proposed method can ensure the system stability over a wide range of parameter variations (e.g., grid impedance changes and LCL-filter parameter drifts) while maintaining fast dynamics with the grid-side current control. The nonresonant single-phase dual-active-bridge (NSDAB) dc–dc converter has been increasingly adopted for isolated dc–dc power conversion systems. Over the past few years, significant research has been carried out to address the technical challenges associated with modulations and controls of the NSDAB dc–dc converter. The aim of this paper is to review and compare these recent state-of-the-art modulation and control strategies. First, the modulation strategies for the NSDAB dc–dc converter are analyzed. All possible phase-shift patterns are demonstrated, and the correlation analysis of the typical phases-shift modulation methods for the NSDAB dc–dc converter is presented. Then, an overview of steady-state efficiency-optimization strategies is discussed for the NSDAB dc–dc converter. Moreover, a review of optimized techniques for dynamic responses is also provided. For both the efficiency and dynamic optimizations, thorough comparisons and recommendations are provided in this paper. Finally, to improve both steady-state and transient performances, a combination approach to optimize both the efficiency and dynamics for an NSDAB dc–dc converter based on the reviewed methods is presented in this paper. Four-level hybrid-clamped inverter is a newly proposed topology that can operate under a wide voltage range without switches connected in series. However, when it is applied in medium voltage high power conversions, the flying capacitors in each phase will occupy a huge volume and a high switching frequency is required to restrain the voltage ripples. In order to overcome this drawback, a four-level active neutral-point clamped inverter is discussed in this paper, which consists of only six switches and no diodes or flying capacitors are required. In order to balance the neutral-point voltages under the full power factor and modulation index range, a capacitor voltage balance method based on carrier-overlapped pulsewidth modulation is proposed in this paper. The upper and lower dc-link capacitor voltages are balanced by zero-sequence voltage injection and the central dc-link capacitor voltage is balanced by adjusting the duty cycles of switching signals slightly. Demanding higher power, higher power quality, lower switching loss, and eliminating interface transformers in industrial applications caused significant attention toward multilevel converters. This paper presents current control of a seven-level topology for medium-voltage high-power applications. This topology has fewer active switches and components, and less control complexity in comparison to the other existing classic and advanced seven-level topologies. A comprehensive review has been done on seven-level topologies to demonstrate the advantages of this topology in this paper. A control method based on model predictive control (MPC) is developed to balance the flying capacitors of this topology at their desired values and control the output currents without the need of pulsewidth modulation blocks, and proportional-integral (PI) controllers, which is the advantage of MPC in power electronics applications. In order to evaluate the performance of the seven-level topology and the developed control method effectiveness, experimental results are shown for different conditions, which demonstrate the feasibility of the seven-level topology and the developed control technique. To realize a soft-switching inverter with the advantages of a simple structure, high efficiency, low-voltage stress, and easy to control, a novel parallel resonant dc-link inverter with the function of pulse current regeneration is proposed in this paper. All switches in the inverter main circuit can achieve zero-voltage switching (ZVS) turn-on and ZVS turn-off. In addition, all switches in the auxiliary commutation circuit (ACC) can achieve soft switching. The power in the ACC is small. Freewheeling diodes in the inverter turn off under zero current condition, which can reduce the reverse recovery loss of freewheeling diodes. In addition, the bulk capacitors are avoided in the circuit and there is no neutral point potential variation problem. At the same time, the zero-voltage duration is independent of the load current, and the time of transition can be selected freely. According to the equivalent circuits in different operation modes under the proposed modulation strategy, the operation principle, soft-switching implementation condition, and parameter design procedure of the proposed inverter are analyzed successively in this paper. Finally, a 10 kW, 10 kHz soft-switching inverter prototype with insulated gate bipolar transistor based switches is built. This paper proposes a new control strategy of microgrids for the improved voltage quality. In the existing control techniques, the droop control is commonly adopted as a decentralized power sharing method at the cost of voltage deviations. Besides, the conventional cascaded control featuring relatively slow dynamic response shows difficulties in handling the fluctuation of renewable energy outputs, leading to further voltage quality deterioration. In this paper, an advanced model predictive power control strategy by considering the battery constraints is proposed for the bidirectional dc–dc converters to smooth the solar photovoltaic (PV) outputs and stabilize the dc-bus voltages. A model predictive voltage control scheme taking into account the voltage changing trend is then developed to control the distributed inverters to improve the output ac voltages. Furthermore, a washout-filter-based power sharing approach with the plug-and-play capability is adopted to achieve a proper load sharing among parallel inverters and mitigate the voltage deviation. The proposed control strategy is numerically simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and experimentally verified by hardware-in-the-loop tests under the condition of fluctuating PV outputs and variable power demands. First harmonic analysis (FHA) is arguably the most widely used analytical technique for wireless power transfer (WPT) circuits due to its simplicity. Although FHA can provide closed-form solutions, the existence of rectifier diode forward voltage drop and higher order harmonics, especially the second and third harmonics at variable duty cycle operation, can significantly deteriorate its accuracy. This paper presents an accurate and efficient method called enhanced multiple harmonic analysis (eMHA) for the optimal design and optimal control of WPT systems. The eMHA method considers the nature of nonlinear rectification networks under nonsinusoidal current and reexamines the concept of the equivalent load. As a result, the rectified WPT system is transformed into a series of linear systems with complex load impedances. The steady-state electric quantities can be then explicitly calculated. This enables eMHA to seamlessly work with numerical optimization algorithms to facilitate the automated design and optimization of WPT systems. An example of optimal design and optimal control of a 10 W WPT system is demonstrated. The results obtained by eMHA and FHA are also compared. A prototype of the designed circuit was constructed. The accuracy and effectiveness of eMHA are verified by experimental measurements. In this paper, the modeling of storage elements and a unified theory liberated of the I–V characteristics of a specific technology is developed. First, the definition of an ideal storage element with limited energy capacity is presented, then the semiideal storage properties are discussed. The addition of power conservative two-port network denoted POPI (Pout = Pin) is added in order to define a flexible storage element in terms of characteristics. The paper demonstrates the theory by examples of storage elements integrated in power electronics systems. The ideas and methodology presented in this work can be applied to power electronics applications as well as power systems, smart grids, and microgrids, where storage is an important factor. A new single stage three-phase ac–dc converter with four switches and galvanic isolation is proposed in this paper. The new converter is simple and uses fewer switches than previously proposed ac–dc converters of the same type. It is a bridgeless converter that can operate with continuous input current and with any pulsewidth modulated method suitable for a standard three-phase six-switch voltage source rectifier. In this paper, the operation, control, analysis, and design of the proposed converter are explained and its features are discussed. This paper is concerned with control-oriented modeling of a class of wireless power transfer systems with a phase-shift-controlled inverter. Two methods are investigated: the analytical modeling method, which is based on physical laws, and the refined instrumental variable method, which is based on sampled data. It shows that the former provides physical insights into the system, and that the resulting models will be accurate if the true circuit component parameters are a priori known. Otherwise, the model accuracy may decline. By contrast, the latter provides a cheap solution for accurate modeling, based only on a set of sampled input–output data, and the resulting model can capture very well the dynamic behavior of the system within a defined operating range. In real applications, it is always hard to know the actual circuit component parameters, since they may drift from the nominal values, due to some reasons such as the aging of circuit components and the variation of coil placement, making the analytical modeling method not very accurate. Therefore, to preserve the virtues of both methods, it is suggested to use them as a combination, that is, using the analytical modeling method to determine the model structure while using the data-driven modeling method to estimate the model parameters. This paper deals with one of the most challenging problems in nearly zero energy buildings (nZEBs) of several multifaced and sometimes contradictory objectives that is the energy management. Specifically, aim of the paper is to propose an integrated control strategy (ICS) based on genetic algorithms that can provide an optimal balance between the objectives of energy saving, comfort of the building residents and maximum exploitation of the generated electric energy by the renewable energy sources through the proper utilization of a battery storage system (BSS). The above can be attained by optimizing a comprehensive cost function that considers the most important factors that may affect the performance of an nZEB, i.e., real-time electricity price, generated/consumed electric energy by each device, user preferences, state-of-charge, and energy price of the BSS, weather forecast and the nZEB's construction characteristics. The outcome of the ICS is the proper task scheduling and control of the electric loads as well as the regulation of the BSS operation so as the nZEB's performance is improved. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed ICS are verified in a hardware-in-the-loop system and selective experimental results are presented to demonstrate the operational improvements. Collaborative control of power converters operating in microgrids with unbalanced single-phase loads is difficult to achieve, considering that the voltages and currents have positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence components. In this paper, a new control scheme for collaborative control of four-leg microgrids is proposed. The main advantage of the proposed methodology is simplicity, because the sharing of the powers produced by the positive-, negative-, and zero-sequence voltage and currents is simple to achieve using the easy to implement and well-known droop control algorithms, i.e., as those based on $P$ – $\omega$ and $Q$ – $v$ droop control. The proposed droop algorithms do not require high bandwidth communication channels and the application of virtual impedances, whose design usually demands extensive simulation work, is not required. Three secondary control systems are also analyzed, discussed, and implemented in this paper to regulate the frequency, voltage, and phase at the point of common coupling (PCC), to achieve a balanced 50-Hz three-phase voltage supply in the PCC during steady-state operation. For these secondary control systems, single-phase phase-locked loop based on quadrature signal generators are implemented. Small signal modeling and design are discussed in this paper. In this paper, a railway power conditioner (RPC) based on a modular multilevel converter (MMC) with a split supercapacitor energy storage system (SCESS) is studied. In this case, the MMC-SCESS-based RPC could not only provide normal negative-sequence current compensation, but also reduce the impact of power fluctuations caused by the locomotive braking or startup on the electric grid. First, this paper analyzes the power flow patterns and deduces the reference circulating current under different operation modes of the MMC-SCESS-based RPC. Then, the control objectives of the MMC-SCESS-based RPC are divided into two categories—the balance control and the current tracking control. The balance control methods are developed for the submodule capacitor voltages and the state of charge of the supercapacitor, which are associated with the operation modes. To ensure the current tracking performance, a model-predictive direct current control method is presented for the MMC and the bidirectional energy converter. With the increasing of switching frequency in pulsewidth modulated motor system, common mode current (CMC) seriously affects the reliable operation of motor system and it has become a problem that cannot be ignored. This paper proposes a mathematical model of CMC and conducts detailed time–frequency characteristics analysis of CMC. The influence of several key parameters of motor system, such as distributed capacitance, dc bus voltage, and inverter switching frequency, on CMC characteristics has been analyzed in detail, and the corresponding variation rule of CMC oscillation amplitude and attenuation period/time has been summarized. The experimental results are presented to verify the correctness of theoretical analysis. The main standard for avionic equipment DO-160G defines a set of tests that require compliance before the employment of a device in aircraft. An important test involves the generator voltage and consequential current distortion of the three-phase load in the variable 360–800 Hz frequency grid. The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyze a systematic design methodology for three-phase boost and buck rectifiers in order to meet with the voltage distortion test requirement. For a given voltage harmonic profile, the current harmonic limits that have to be satisfied are translated into equivalent per-harmonic admittances and a profile of maximum rectifier input admittance versus frequency is obtained. The defined profile, due to normalization, is applicable to arbitrary power level with simple shifting by the base admittance governed by the converter nominal power. It is shown that for boost-type rectifiers there is a tradeoff between current controller bandwidth and input inductor size, while for the buck-type rectifiers main limitation lies in the input LC filter design used for differential electromagnetic interference filtering. The experimental results conducted on an SiC three-phase 10 kW VIENNA rectifier are tightly backing up the proposed theoretical analysis. To meet the great need for distributed and sustainable power sources, mechanical energy in the environment is widely used for electricity generation. Based on the coupling effect of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) as an innovative energy technology has advantages of collecting fluctuating amplitude and low-frequency mechanical energy. In this paper, a leaf-shaped TENG has been demonstrated to harvest multiple ambient mechanical energy. By the characterization with different mechanical energy sources, the leaf-shaped TENG has been proven as an effective tool to scavenge wind, vibration, and falling raindrop energy. Furthermore, based on numerous leaf-shaped TENGs, a leaf-shaped TENG tree has been developed, which can be used for continuous collection of environmental mechanical energy at large-scale. The main technical challenge of the medium-voltage motor drives with modular multilevel converter (MMC) is the serious low-frequency fluctuation on the capacitor voltages, and the existing suppression methods inevitably inject high-frequency circulating currents in MMC. However, the output currents are evidently distorted by the large injected components, while little research has been done to study and solve this problem. This paper analyzes and proves the essential interactions between the output current distortion and the injected components, and the specific dominant output harmonic groups are derived and summarized, revealing the nature of the problem, and it can be taken as a favorable reference for the controller designing. Based on the derivations, this paper proposes a novel suppression method for the greatly improved harmonic characteristics of the output currents during the low-frequency operation. The output harmonics can be accurately measured by the proposed control and effectively suppressed for much lower current total harmonic distortion, benefiting for the superior output control performances with improved efficiency. The simulation results on PSCAD/EMTDC and experimental verifications on a 2.2 kW MMC-based motor drive prototype prove the validity of the presented harmonic analysis and suppression method. Cascaded-connected string converter is an effective way to directly interconnect distributed low-voltage dc sources into higher voltage ac grids. When this system is switched to islanding operation, an important task is to obtain decentralized power sharing among power cells according to the corresponding dc source power capacity, and at the same time, maintaining a good regulation of supply voltage quality to local critical loads. In this paper, a hierarchical control approach is proposed to simultaneously realize the abovementioned two tasks. First, the central controller at point of common coupling (PCC) is responsible for supply voltage magnitude and frequency deviation suppression and it also distributes the key control signals to all power cell local controllers with only low bandwidth communications. At the same time, a modified inverse power factor droop regulator with adjustable offset is adopted by each power cell. As the offset is relevant to the PCC load power factor and the state of charges of power cell backstage batteries, it can easily obtain decentralized proportional power sharing. The paper confirms that removing antiparallel silicon carbide (SiC) Schottky barrier diodes (SBDs) from SiC-based inverters offers positive effects without critical impact on inverter loss and electromagnetic interference (EMI) issues, moreover, the removal of SBDs reduces the inverter losses in many cases and noise emissions. This conclusion leads to the possibility to improve the power densities by removing SBDs. However, the removal of SBDs may cause some disadvantages such as an increase of the reverse conduction loss and influence of the body diode recovery phenomenon. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation of these advantages and disadvantages is necessary. In this paper, design criteria are proposed to clarify the conditions in which SiC-based inverters without SBDs have advantages over those with SBDs from the viewpoint of losses. On the other hand, to achieve the removal of SBDs, it is also necessary to confirm that removing SBDs does not cause severe EMI issues. The paper confirms that switching noises are reduced by the removal of SBDs; this is due to the larger damping effect of the SiC mosfets without SBDs than that of SiC mosfets with SBDs. It is quite often to utilize the transformer leakage inductance in the resonant tank of the LLC resonant converter to allow for a drastic reduction in the converter cost, weight, size, and volume. The effects of the secondary leakage inductance on the operation of the LLC resonant converter are not well discussed in the relevant literature, and it is the purpose of this paper to give an insight into these effects. The contribution of this paper lies in the following: first, highlighting that it is not always an accurate assumption to consider that the values of the primary and secondary leakage inductance are identical, specifically in asymmetric magnetic core structures. Second, it has been disclosed that the well-known coupling factor (k12) cannot properly express the unequalized leakage inductance distribution in the proposed asymmetric transformer. Therefore, the authors bring the primary coupling factor (k1) and secondary coupling factor (k2) into practice to appropriately express the unequalized leakage distribution on the primary and secondary windings, which can be controlled by the allocation of the relevant winding with respect to the air gap, utilizing the noise absorber, and changing the distance between the winding. Several transformer prototypes had been built and experimentally tested to validate these hypotheses. Third, it has been observed that the transformer voltage gain and efficiency can be improved when the transformer leakage inductance is concentrated on the secondary side to avoid the voltage drop inflicted by the relatively large value of the magnetizing current $(i_{m})$ , especially at the light load condition. Fourth, it has been reported that in a transformer structure with a concentrated value of leakage on the secondary side would decrease the resonant tank input impedance, vertically widen the voltage–gain curve of the converter, and eventually increase the frequency control bandwidth with respect to the load variation. In order to increase the efficiency of modern microprocessor power supplies used in data centers, 380-V dc power distribution systems have been attracting attention due to their high efficiency and high reliability. This paper presents an innovative single-stage approach for 380-V voltage regulator modules (VRMs) based on a quasi-resonant multilevel topology constant on-time operation. The proposed topology inherently integrates the multiphase approach, providing fast phase shedding and flat high-efficiency curves even at light-load conditions. This is a unique advantage, which is not possible to establish in the two-stage approach, which is very important in server architectures, and where high efficiency is required even at light-load conditions. This paper analyzes the circuit topology and proposes a control architecture for fast transient response, including current-sharing capabilities. The digital controller has been implemented in 0.16- $\mu$ m lithography together with a digital pulsewidth modulation with a 195-ps resolution and a 40-MS/s 7-bit analog-to-digital converter. With the increasing penetration of the wind power, the stability issues of the weak AC grid-connected doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind turbines during low-voltage ride through (LVRT) cannot be neglected. In order to explore the instability mechanism of DFIG system during weak grid fault, the small signal state-space model is established in this paper. The results of the modal analysis show that the dominant unstable poles are mainly impacted by the phase-locked loop (PLL), rotor current control loop, and terminal voltage during the fault, where the PLL is the dominant factor. Furthermore, the impact of each factor on the system dynamic stability is comprehensively evaluated, which indicates that the controller bandwidth under normal grid condition is no longer applicable to the fault condition due to the interaction between the controller and grid. Then, the optimal current proportion which can significantly improve the system stability is deduced. Finally, based on the analysis, this paper proposes the improved LVRT control schemes from two aspects of either injecting active current or decreasing PLL bandwidth to enhance the small signal stability of the system. This paper proposes a fifth-order resonant immittance network based dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter and an optimal modulation method that will ensure high-efficiency operation of the converter under wide-range variations in voltage ratio and output power level. The proposed modulation method is based on the concept of total power loss minimization, where a loss model is developed and an optimization algorithm is formulated to compute the optimal set of internal and external phase shift parameters that will lead to the maximum efficiency for a given set of operating parameters including voltage ratio and output power level. It is found that to maintain high-efficiency operation under wide-range variations in voltage ratio and output power level, the DAB converter is required to switch between different operation modes and neither soft-switching operation nor unity-power-factor operation is able to achieve wide-range high efficiency performance when used alone. This paper discusses the analysis, design, and experimental validation of a modular isolated matrix converter (MIMC), including modulation, commutation, and control. The MIMC topology is a single-stage high power density ac–ac converter, which is attractive for traction applications and space-restricted low voltage (LV) or medium voltage (MV) future distribution networks. The topology under study utilizes bidirectional switches based dual-active-bridge cells as basic building blocks. A single cell would have limited practical application as the output frequency is locked to the input one. On the contrary, the repetition of single cells proposed in the MIMC extending the matrix converter concept, achieves variable frequency operation while also providing a modular structure. However, the presence of medium frequency transformers in each cell poses additional challenges for modulation and safe commutation that are discussed and solved in this paper. This paper presents an enhanced current controller for improving the performance of a class of single-phase grid-connected inverters operating in weak and distorted grid conditions. An inverter designed to operate at normal (strong or stiff and clean) grid conditions may not perform satisfactorily during weak and distorted grid conditions. One major reason is the interfering dynamics of the synchronization or phase-locked loop (PLL). This paper proposes an enhanced control structure for a popular class of single-phase inverters to address this problem. The proposed idea is to include the PLL state variables into the main inverter controller thereby minimizing the undesirable interactions of the PLL with the other components. A method for optimally designing the controller gains is also proposed. Compared to the conventional one, the proposed controller is shown to have a more robust performance over a substantially wider range of weak and distorted grid conditions. Multi-objective optimization of power converters is a time-consuming task, especially when multiple operating points and multiple converter topologies must be considered. As a result, various steps are often taken to simplify the design problem and restrict the size of the design space prior to going through an optimization procedure. While this saves time, it produces potentially sub-optimal designs, and existing approaches must tradeoff between running time and design optimality. This paper presents an optimization-oriented method for modeling power converters and their components as posynomial functions, allowing multi-objective optimization of converters to be formulated as a geometric program, a type of convex optimization problem. This allows the use of fast, powerful solvers that guarantee global optimality of solutions. The method is demonstrated using the example of low-power multi-level flying capacitor step-down converters. Results show that, using geometric programming, sets of globally Pareto-optimal designs of two-, three-, and four-level converters with respect to efficiency and power density, for one design space and one operating point, can be generated in as little as 25 s, on a mid- to upper range laptop computer. Thus, optimal designs for three different converter topologies for hundreds of different operating points and/or design spaces can be generated in several hours—less than the time required to globally optimize one converter topology at one operating point for one design space using currently prevalent methods. In this paper, two simple control methods are proposed for improving direct torque control (DTC) with a constant frequency torque controller (CFTC-DTC) in induction machines. The CFTC-DTC was initially introduced to reduce torque ripple and achieve constant switching frequency in inverters. However, when compared to the original DTC, the CFTC-DTC algorithm suffers from slow torque dynamic response owing to the selection of zero-voltage vectors during torque transient. In addition, when the motor operates at low speed, flux droop occurs at sector transitions, which leads to undesirable current distortions. The problem of flux droop occurs because of short-duty voltage cycles and small radial voltage components at low speeds. This paper has two main contributions—to eliminate zero-voltage vectors during torque dynamics in order to establish a fast torque response in the transient state, and to minimize the flux droop at the sector transitions by applying another triangular carrier and modifying the torque output in order to increase the duty voltage cycles at low motor speeds. This paper presents a scheme for rotor position estimation from standstill to nominal speed. The proposed scheme is particularly suited for surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors and for slotless permanent magnet synchronous motors with completely smooth cylindrical rotor, which cannot be operated with state-of-the-art sensorless methods seamlessly from standstill. At standstill and very low speed, the position is estimated by using signal injection. A systematic distortion in the position estimation that is due to asymmetries in the motor parameters is identified and compensated. The rotor polarity is identified by a special process based on the estimation of the back electromotive force (back EMF) induced by a minimal rotor motion. At high speed, the position is estimated by using a linear back EMF observer. Different observer gains are used at different speed ranges, so that the position estimate is reliable even at low speed. The combination of these two approaches enables sensorless motor control in the full speed range including standstill. Experiments demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed estimation scheme and its robustness under different thermal conditions. Various methods have been presented in the past to emulate the electrical behavior of modular multilevel converters (MMCs). To meet the demands for the reliability aspect study of MMCs, this paper proposes a viable setup to emulate the thermal behavior and to investigate its feasibility for reliability testing and thermal model validation of the power modules in the MMC. The proposed mission profile emulator has three distinctive features: 1) capable of emulating and measuring the thermal stresses of power modules; 2) capable of implementing practical switching profile as a full-scale MMC; and 3) having significantly reduced requirement for dc power supply compared to existing setups used for electrical studies. Theoretical discussions, and simulations as well as the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the capability of the mission profile emulator both electrically and thermally. Operating in the high-speed range is necessary for high-performance permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. However, due to the back electromotive force effect, the PMSM is approaching the voltage limit at field decreasing scope. This paper presents a new flux-weakening scheme along with an improved vector control strategy to alleviate the influence of this problem. Control parameters of the anti-windup proportional and integral (AWPI) controller are optimized off-line in relying on an adaptive velocity particle swarm optimization (AVPSO) algorithm. The AVPSO algorithm considers the summation of AWPI measurement error which is the objective function of the optimization problem without knowing the transfer function of the plant. Hence, the tuned flux-weakening controller with a filter is used to set the flux level without saturating the current controllers. Meanwhile, the other controllers of inner and outer loops award a great dynamic and steady-state performance for the PMSM. In the proposed scheme, the flux-weakening control is not dependent on machine parameters that adapts the flux level automatically and provide a fast transition between the constant torque region and the field-weakening region. The emergence of applications which require high-voltage switches has created a tendency to use semiconductor device series stacks. These series stacks permit operation at blocking voltages above semiconductor elements’ nominal voltage. Insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBT) are currently utilized for controllability and switching speed, when these topologies are employed. The main challenge therewith is guaranteeing voltage balance between IGBTs, both when blocked and when switching transistors. Most of the methods which have been proposed to mitigate static and dynamic voltage unbalances increase transistor losses. The series stack loss-less high voltage switch (LHVS) which mitigates voltage unbalances, thus reducing switching losses, is presented in this paper. LHVS consists of a circuit, which ensures soft IGBT switching, an energy recovery circuit, and a gate delay compensation circuit. Additionally, the insulation voltage level is guaranteed to be equal between control circuit and high-voltage side of each IGBT. The operating principle of the LHVS is detailed in this paper, as is experimental validation which has been performed for three series stack modules. Static unbalances are reduced to 1%, while the differences between collector–emitter voltage curves in switching “on” do not surpass 8 ns, and switching losses are reduced by 41%, as compared to the hard-switching topology. This paper presents a fault-tolerant operation for dual three-phase surface-mounted permanent magnet machines (SPMSMs) that were both electrically connected on three winding phases and mechanically connected on one shaft. The open-phase fault-tolerant operation is considered in dual three-phase SPMSMs drive thus combining motor drive of three-phase and single-phase. The proposed method controls the torque of each motor with different phases using a single inverter. In order to control these motors, the torque and current are distributed between the motors with the specific ratio. Methods for minimizing torque ripple and copper losses and maximizing the output torque of the three-phase motor are stated in this paper. Accordingly, a system with cost-effective and enhanced reliability is proposed without any configuration adjustment or auxiliary switching devices. The mathematical analysis and experiments are presented to verify the feasibility of the proposed method. This paper presents a novel power regulation controller for grid-connected voltage source converter (VSC). The proposed controller is usually applied to achieve smooth active and reactive power dynamics against the variation of parameters. The dynamic performance of grid-connected VSC is sensitive to parameter variation, threatening the safe operation especially when the relative stability is low. Moreover, there is no possibility to modify the dynamic response without the loss of power regulation precision or output voltage and frequency accuracy. In this paper, an improvement in the dynamic response is achieved by introducing feedforward branches into the VSC power regulation controller. Owing to the model reduction mechanism, the VSC provides smooth dynamic response and robustness against the variation of parameters. Simulation and experiment results are presented to prove the effectiveness of this approach, which shows excellent performance as opposed to the conventional controller paradigm.
