This paper presents a new method for studying electromechanical transients in power systems using three phase, combined transmission and distribution models (hybrid models). The methodology models individual phases of an electric network and associated unbalance in load and generation. Therefore, the impacts of load unbalance, single phase distributed generation and line impedance unbalance on electromechanical transients can be studied without using electromagnetic transient simulation (EMTP) programs. The implementation of this methodology in software is called the Three Phase Dynamics Analyzer (TPDA). Case studies included in the paper demonstrate the accuracy of TPDA and its ability to simulate electromechanical transients in hybrid models. TPDA has the potential for providing electric utilities and power system planners with more accurate assessment of system stability than traditional dynamic simulation software that assume balanced network topology. Robust simulation is essential for reliable operation and planning of transmission and distribution power grids. At present, disparate methods exist for steady-state analysis of the transmission (power flow) and distribution power grid (three-phase power flow). Due to the nonlinear nature of the problem, it is difficult for alternating current power flow and three-phase power flow analyses to ensure convergence to the correct physical solution, particularly from arbitrary initial conditions, or when evaluating a change (e.g., contingency) in the grid. In this paper, we describe our equivalent circuit formulation approach with current and voltage variables, which models both the positive sequence network of the transmission grid and three-phase network of the distribution grid without loss of generality. The proposed circuit models and formalism enables the extension and application of circuit simulation techniques to solve for the steady-state solution with excellent robustness of convergence. Examples for positive sequence transmission and three-phase distribution systems, including actual 75k+ nodes Eastern Interconnection transmission test cases and 8k+ nodes taxonomy distribution test cases, are solved from arbitrary initial guesses to demonstrate the efficacy of our approach. This paper studies key aspects of preventive and corrective security strategies to coordinate flexible transmission network infrastructure. To do so, we propose a two-stage stochastic optimization model that can efficiently coordinate available preventive and corrective control actions (pre- and post-contingency) from flexible network technologies, generation, and demand, while explicitly considering the likelihood of postcontingency events and wind/solar uncertainty. This stochastic/probabilistic model constitutes the counterfactual against which current deterministic, preventive operational practices are compared. Flexible network equipment such as HVDC and FACTS devices are efficiently modeled through a tight MILP representation and network losses are also included through a linear representation. Through several case studies, we demonstrate the advantages of probabilistic, corrective security to improve coordination of HVDC and FACTS setpoints and thus reduce network congestion and reserve holding levels, improving the overall efficiency of the system operation. We also quantify the value loss associated with current deterministic, preventive control operational practices when coordinating setpoints of flexible network equipment, demonstrating that adding flexible network technology could even increase system costs under a preventive security approach. The power flow is a nonlinear problem that requires a Newton's method to be solved in dc microgrids with constant power terminals. This paper presents sufficient conditions for the quadratic convergence of the Newton's method in this type of grids. The classic Newton's method as well as an approximated Newton's method are analyzed in both master–slave and island operation with droop controls. Requirements for the convergence as well as for the existence and uniqueness of the solution starting from voltages close to 1 pu are presented. In conventional contingency analysis (CA), the overloading of transmission lines is identified by the violation of current or power flow rather than the temperature rise. Thus, the transient thermal behavior of transmission lines is usually neglected, which may cause underestimation of power transfer capability and lead to misoperations. In this paper, a new CA method that considers the transient thermal behavior of overhead transmission lines is proposed, where a transient heat balance based power flow (THB-PF) model is established to estimate the temperature dynamics of the lines after contingencies. The THB-PF model is represented by algebraic differential equations, which can be solved as a sequence of extended power flow problems by discretizing the differential equations into difference equations. Moreover, a simplified solution method for the THB-PF is also developed, in which the THB difference equations are linearized and solved separately from the power flow equations. The simplified method can yield an acceptable approximate solution within a considerably shorter time. Numerical simulations verify the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods. Recent years have witnessed significant interest in convex relaxations of the power flows, with several papers showing that the second-order cone relaxation is tight for tree networks under various conditions on loads or voltages. This paper presents an improved corrective security constrained optimal power flow (CSCOPF) for a meshed AC/DC power transmission network with voltage source converter based multi-terminal HVDC (VSC-MTDC) grids. The security constrains of N-1 contingencies for both AC and DC networks are fully considered in the CSCOPF problem. The corrective actions employed in this paper include not only the traditional long-term rescheduling control actions of the AC system, but also the short term post-contingency fast corrective control of multi-terminal VSC-HVDC. A hybrid method is developed to solve the improved CSCOPF problem and the effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated and demonstrated in this paper by two example meshed AC/DC power systems. In this paper we address some shortcomings in existing nonlinear dynamic models of power system experiencing symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in their transmission/distribution networks. The shortcomings relate to: 1) approximations relating to stator dynamics, internal voltage of the positive sequence network and the dynamics of the negative and zero sequence networks, and 2) existing models are time -variant, which may not be suitable for system studies such as stability and fault detection studies that require time invariant model. The approximations outlined in 1) adversely affect the modeling accuracy, especially that of the system response during the period immediately after the occurrence of faults. We present in this paper a full fault-dependent time-invariant dynamical model of power systems experiencing symmetrical and unsymmetrical faults in their transmission/distribution networks and verify it through simulation studies mimicking real life scenarios. In emerging distribution systems with a proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) and flexible demand assets, operation characters of the unbalance network and voltage regulation devices need to be accurately addressed for ensuring the secure and economic operation. This paper focuses on the modeling and solution approach of AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) for unbalanced distribution systems with DERs and voltage regulation transformers (VRT). The ACOPF problem is formulated as a chordal relaxation based semidefinite programming (SDP) model, and a tighter convexification model of VRTs is proposed for mitigating solution inexactness. Analytical conditions are presented and proved to determine whether global optimal solution to the original ACOPF problem can be retrieved from solutions of the chordal relaxation based SDP model. Numerical studies on modified IEEE 34-bus and 8500-node systems show that the proposed approach presents a better computational performance as compared to rank relaxation based SDP approaches and general nonlinear solvers. This paper focuses on distribution systems featuring renewable energy sources (RESs) and energy storage systems, and presents an AC optimal power flow (OPF) approach to optimize system-level performance objectives while coping with uncertainty in both RES generation and loads. The proposed method hinges on a chance-constrained AC OPF formulation, where probabilistic constraints are utilized to enforce voltage regulation with prescribed probability. A computationally more affordable convex reformulation is developed by resorting to suitable linear approximations of the AC power-flow equations as well as convex approximations of the chance constraints. The approximate chance constraints provide conservative bounds that hold for arbitrary distributions of the forecasting errors. An adaptive strategy is then obtained by embedding the proposed AC OPF task into a model predictive control framework. The number and locations of transmission lines that are likely to get simultaneously congested are useful information for analysis of power market. In this paper, we present a study that demonstrates the number of simultaneously congested transmission lines is very limited, as well as an algorithm for identifying a small set of transmission lines that may become simultaneously congested based on the current states of the system and market. To this end, we first investigate the maximum number of simultaneously congested lines. Then, a novel algorithm is developed to identify a smaller set using two scientific criteria – one is concerned with the absolute impact of generation dispatch decisions, and the other, the relative sensitivities of line flows with respect to the changes of generation outputs. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through two simulation studies, one based on IEEE 39-bus for illustration of concepts, and the other based on a large-scale, real-world power system for showing the practical application and significance of results. A model predictive controller (MPC) for load frequency control (LFC) of an interconnected power system is investigated. The MPC is based on a simplified system model of the Nordic power system, and it takes into account limitations on tie-line power flow, generation capacity, and generation rate of change. The participation factors for each generator are optimization variables, and suggestions are made as to how one can ensure tie-line power transfer margins through slack-variables, and pricing information through the objective function. The solution of MPC for LFC is completed by including a Kalman filter for state estimation. The presented MPC is compared against a conventional LFC/AGC scheme with proportional integral (PI) controllers. Simulations show that the MPC gives better frequency response while using cheaper resources. This paper proposes a computationally efficient technique for estimating the composite load model parameters based on analytical similarity of parameter sensitivity. When the model parameters are updated in the optimization procedure to best fit the actual load dynamics, i.e., measurements, parameters of similar sensitivity representation in the given mathematical model structure are updated in the same manner at every iterative step. This research allows for practically reducing the number of load model parameters to be identified in the estimation process and the overall computational cost while preserving the desired complexity and accuracy of the original model. This approach consequently facilitates the parameter estimation in the optimization process and helps manage increased number of parameters often criticized for adopting the dynamic composite load model via measurement-based approach. Case studies for the real power system demonstrate the computational efficiency and intact accuracy of the proposed method with reference to the existing methods of estimating all the parameters of the given composite load model independently. Optimal transmission switching (OTS) optimizes simultaneously the generation dispatch and the topology of a power system. It has been shown that taking some transmission lines out of service can significantly reduce the operating cost of the system while respecting the traditional deterministic N-1 security criterion of operational reliability. However, topology modifications could adversely affect probabilistic security metrics. The operational reliability of a power system can be translated into a cost by multiplying the expected energy not served by the value of lost load. This paper therefore explores whether it is possible to maintain a positive economic balance with OTS when considering not only the cost of generation but also the expected socio-economic cost of disruptions in the supply. This is done in two steps: the computation of an N-1 secure OTS and then the calculation of a probabilistic estimate of the operational reliability of the OTS solution. Based on the results obtained with two test systems, it is shown that OTS tends to significantly degrade probabilistic measures of security. It is thus not obvious that OTS can lead to a positive economic balance, even when N-1 security is enforced. A more realistic management of electric vehicle (EV) charging points requires to cope with stochastic behavior on vehicle staying patterns. This paper presents a stochastic programming model to achieve optimal management taking into account price variation in day-ahead and intraday electricity markets, together with regulating reserve margins. In this model, first-stage decisions determine day-ahead energy purchases and sales and the upward and downward reserve margins committed. Second-stage decisions correspond to intraday markets and deal with reserve requirements and several possible scenarios for vehicle staying pattern. The design of the objective function prioritizes supplying energy to EV batteries while minimizing the net expected energy cost at the EV charging point. A case study describing a parking for 50 EVs is analyzed. The case includes household, commercial and mixed EV staying patterns with several intraday arrival and departure scenarios. Pure and hybrid EVs are included, taking into account their respective energy characteristics. Sensitivity analysis is used to show the potential energy cost savings and the impact of different non-supply penalizations. The case study considers several vehicle staying patterns, energy price profiles and discharge allowances. The model achieves energy cost reductions between 1% and 15% depending on the specific case. This paper proposes a two-level voltage controller for large-scale power systems. The aim of the controller is to maintain a near-optimal voltage profile in the transmission network by coordinating discrete reactive power (var) control devices in the system. The controller is targeted for implementation in electric power transmission utility companies where most of the voltage controls are coordinated by switching of discrete var devices such as shunt capacitor and reactor banks and transformer banks load tap changers (LTCs). By effectively dividing the controller responsibilities between local substation controls and a central coordinator at control center level, the design is aimed at voltage control of large-scale power systems. At local level, the substation controllers maintain their respective substation bus voltages by local power-flow-like computations using mostly local PMU measurements. The central coordinator computes and provides the voltage set-points to the substation controllers and also coordinates by enabling or disabling the local controllers as needed. The controller is being designed towards prototype implementation in Southern California Edison (SCE), starting with local controllers at specific substations in the first stage. The relatively fixed residential day-ahead real-time electricity price reflects insufficient information of the market, so the response of residential energy management system (EMS) to the real-time pricing (RTP) is not complete and therefore retailers are exposed to the risk of price fluctuation in balance market. Direct load control (DLC) in cooperative game is proposed in this paper. A cooperative game union comprised of some users and a retailer is established to minimize the union costs. The union provides an opportunity to access the balance market indirectly for residents and to reduce risks and costs for the retailer. In addition, Shapley value which embodies the fairness is used in union profits allocation. The method that avoids bidding for residential users simplifies the thresholds of residents to participate in market. Furthermore, the DLC union contributes to imbalance self-management for the retailer, which helps him avoid paying for the regulation cost involved in the deviation between the total quantity bought at markets and the actual consumption. The achievement of union’s goal respects the constraints set by users. The extensive usage of open communication networks in power system control causes inevitable time delays. This paper studies impacts of such delays on the stability of one-area and two-area load frequency control (LFC) systems and proposes an analytical method to determine delay margins, the upper bound on the delay for stability. The proposed method first eliminates transcendental terms in characteristic equation of LFC systems without making any approximation and transforms the transcendental characteristic equation into a regular polynomial. The key result of the elimination process is that real roots of the new polynomial correspond to imaginary roots of the transcendental characteristic equation. With the help of new polynomial, it is also possible to determine the delay-dependency of system stability and root tendency with respect to the time delay. An analytical formula is then developed to compute delay margins in terms of system parameters. For a large set of controller gains, delay margins of LFC systems are computed to investigate the qualitative effect of controller gains on the delay margin. This paper presents a simple method for voltage stability assessment by reducing the bus impedance matrix of a network into its two-bus equivalent model at a referred bus. Closed-form equations of the equivalent model could then be derived to facilitate an equivalent nodal analysis at the referred bus to determine its voltage stability limit. The method was also shown to have parallels with the well-accepted modal analysis of the Jacobian matrix. These include defining geometric indices to identify critical buses and participation factors to quantify contribution of network elements to their criticality. The method however does not require post power flow solution processing of the Jacobian matrix; such computational advantage may make it suitable for online applications. Increasing penetration of renewable power sources (RESs) is bringing more uncertainties to power systems. Real-time economic dispatch should be able to handle the fluctuations caused by the load as well as RESs, and obtain new optimal operating points after deviating from original generation schedules. This paper proposes a generation adjustment algorithm based on the base point and participation factor method. The objective of the method is to obtain fast adjustments to generators’ real power outputs in real-time economic dispatch. The proposed method achieves significant and consistent improvements comparing to the original participation factor method by using a more precise model of transmission losses in the optimization process. The computational burden and execution time of the proposed method is much less than OPF and heuristic economic dispatch methods. The proposed method and its effectiveness are tested using IEEE 30-bus system, IEEE 118-bus system, and GuangDong 1018-bus system. In this paper, we propose a method to optimally set the tap position of voltage regulation transformers in distribution systems. We cast the problem as a rank-constrained semidefinite program (SDP), in which the transformer tap ratios are captured by 1) introducing a secondary-side “virtual” bus per transformer, and 2) constraining the values that these virtual bus voltages can take according to the limits on the tap positions. Then, by relaxing the non-convex rank-1 constraint in the rank-constrained SDP formulation, one obtains a convex SDP problem. The tap positions are determined as the ratio between the primary-side bus voltage and the secondary-side virtual bus voltage that result from the optimal solution of the relaxed SDP, and then rounded to the nearest discrete tap values. To efficiently solve the relaxed SDP, we propose a distributed algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM). We present several case studies with single- and three-phase distribution systems to demonstrate the effectiveness of the distributed ADMM-based algorithm, and compare its results with centralized solution methods. The transition to a deregulated electric power system industry has created a highly competitive electricity market with immense power transfer activity performed between the market participants. A poorly-damped oscillation of small-signal instability is usually imminent during a stress power system condition attributed by the base case power transfer or available transfer capability (ATC) compounded with an outage of critical line. The contingency ranking by means of lowest damping ratio is introduced so that execution of the most critical line outage will incite to a poorly-damped oscillation during the base case ATC. The rescheduling of few critical generators determined by using the normalized participation factor is presented in this paper as a novel, non-intricate and cost-effective solution for estimating a new value of ATC while ensuring a secure power system operating condition. Sturdiness of the proposed method is verified through comparison with the weighted-average sensitivity of stability index required for rescheduling the critical generators performed in a case study of 39-bus New England system. This paper presents an alternative day-ahead auction based on consumer payment minimization for pool-based electricity markets. This auction is an instance of price-based market clearing wherein market-clearing prices are explicitly modeled as decision variables of the optimization. The auction design includes network constraints, inter-temporal constraints associated with generation scheduling, and marginal pricing. Hence, consumer payment is expressed in terms of locational marginal prices. The proposed solution approach is based on bilevel programming. In the upper-level optimization, generation is scheduled with the goal of minimizing the total consumer payment while taking into account that locational marginal prices are determined by a multiperiod optimal power flow in the lower level. In this bilevel programming setting, locational marginal prices are the Lagrange multipliers or dual variables associated with the nodal power balance equations of the lower-level problem. The resulting mixed-integer linear bilevel program is transformed into an equivalent single-level mixed-integer linear program suitable for efficient off-the-shelf software. This transformation relies on the application of results from duality theory of linear programming and integer algebra. The proposed methodology has been successfully applied to several test systems including the IEEE 118-bus system. This paper proposes strategies to reduce the number of variables and the combinatorial search space of the multistage transmission expansion planning problem (TEP). The concept of the binary numeral system (BNS) is used to reduce the number of binary and continuous variables related to the candidate transmission lines and network constraints that are connected with them. The construction phase of greedy randomized adaptive search procedure (GRASP-CP) and additional constraints, obtained from power flow equilibrium in an electric power system are employed for more reduction in search space. The multistage TEP problem is modeled like a mixed binary linear programming problem and solved using a commercial solver with a low computational time.
