The functionalized design of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has been rapidly developed in the last 20 years, and its broad applicability has been demonstrated in many fields. MOFs with desired functions can be assembled using predesigned organic linkers with specific metal nodes, which possess the ordered functional sites and open structures. Although a large number of carboxylic acid junctions have been used to construct MOFs, it is still a great challenge to realize their multifunctionality. Mechanoluminescent materials have shown great application potential in the fields of stress detection, anti-counterfeiting, and optical storage; however, its development is hindered by the unclear mechanism. Different from the mainstream exploration of new mechanoluminescent materials in non-centrosymmetric structures, a centrosymmetric mechanoluminescent material Li2ZnGeO4:Mn2+ is synthesized by a standard high-temperature solid-state reaction in an ambient atmosphere. Combined with the Rietveld refinement, photoluminescence, electron spin resonance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it is proved that the increase in oxygen vacancies is accompanied by the self-reduction process from Mn4+ to Mn2+, and the mechanism of mechanoluminescence is clarified through the afterglow and thermoluminescence spectra. The carriers trapped by the shallow traps participate in the mechanoluminescence process through the tunneling effect, while the carriers trapped by the deep traps take part in the mechanoluminescence process via conduction band or tunneling. A signature anti-counterfeiting application is designed using the new mechanoluminescent material Li2ZnGeO4:0.004Mn2+. Utilizing the afterglow characteristics of Li2ZnGeO4:xMn2+ phosphors, we designed an intelligent long-persistent luminescence quick response code (QR-code) and visualized information encoding/decoding model, which provides a fast, simple, and effective method for information encryption, transformation, and dynamic anti-counterfeiting. This study not only analyzes the self-reduction and mechanoluminescence processes in detail but also breaks the limitation of crystal symmetry and provides a new strategy for the exploration of novel mechanoluminescent materials.

The magnetic bistability of spin-crossover (SCO) materials is highly appealing for applications as molecular switches and information storage. However, switching of the spin state around room temperature remains challenging. In this work, we reported the successful manipulation of the spin states of two iron(II) complexes (1-Fe and 2-Fe) based on pyridylacylhydrazone ligands in manifold ways. Both complexes are stabilized in the low-spin (LS) state at room temperature because of the strong ligand-field strength imposed by the ligands. 2-Fe shows thermoinduced SCO above room temperature with a very large and reproducible hysteresis (>50 K), while 1-Fe remains in the LS state up to 400 K. Acidity-driven spin-state switching of the two complexes was achieved at room temperature as a result of the complex dissociation and release of iron(II) in its high-spin (HS) state. Recovery of the complex is feasible upon further alkalization treatment in the case of 1-Fe, allowing bidirectional modulation of the spin state of the metal center. Light-driven one-way switching from LS to HS is also achieved by virtue of E-to-Z isomerization at the C═N double bond, which results in dissociation of the complex because of the poor binding affinity in the Z configuration.

Gibbsite, bayerite, and boehmite are important aluminum (oxy)hydroxide minerals in nature and have been widely deployed in various industrial applications. They are also major components in caustic nuclear wastes stored at various U.S. locations. Knowledge of their crystallization and phase transformation processes contributes to understanding their occurrence and could help optimize waste treatment processes. While it has been reported that partial conversion of bayerite and gibbsite to boehmite occurs in basic solutions at elevated temperatures, systematic studies of factors affecting the phase transformation as well as the underlying reaction mechanisms are nonexistent, particularly in highly alkaline solutions. We explored the effects of sodium hydroxide concentrations (0.1-3 M), reaction temperatures (60-100 °C), and aluminum concentrations (0.1-1 M) on the crystallization and transformation of these aluminum (oxy)hydroxides. Detailed structural and morphological characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometry revealed that these processes depend largely on the reaction temperature and the Al/OH- ratio. When 1 ≤ Al/OH- ≤ 2.5, the reactions favor formation of high-crystallinity precipitates, whereas at an Al/OH- ratio of ≥2.5 precipitation ceases unless the Al concentration is higher than 1 M. We identified pseudoboehmite, bayerite, and gibbsite as intermediate phases to bayerite, gibbsite and boehmite, respectively, all of which transform via dissolution-reprecipitation. Gibbsite transforms to boehmite in both acidic and weak caustic environments at temperatures above 80 °C. However, a "bar-shaped" gibbsite morphology dominates in highly caustic environments (3 M NaOH). The findings enable a robust basis for the selection of various solid phases by tuning the reaction conditions.

The reaction of 3,6-ditert-butyl-1,8-bis(diphenylphosphino)-9-methyl-9H-carbazole (L) with CuBr resulted in the isolation of tetranuclear copper(I) complex Cu4Br4L2 as two colorless crystal morphs, i.e., green-emitting 1G and yellow-emitting 1Y. As demonstrated by X-ray crystallography, the Cu4Br4 moiety in both 1G and 1Y adopts the same chair conformations. When L is bonded perpendicularly to the Cu4 plane, 1G with green emission is obtained, while it gives a yellow emission of 1Y once the L is parallelly bonded to Cu4 plane. Theoretical computational studies suggest that the variation in ligand orientation results in a different degree of structural distortion in triplet state and thus different luminescent energy. Particularly, 1Y undergoes dramatic structural distortion from the ground (S0) to triplet excied state (T1). Interestingly, 1G can be converted into 1Y upon exposed to saturated hexane vapor, which would return to 1G upon exposure to acetonitrile vapor. As demonstrated experimentally and theoretically, the reversible luminescence transformation between 1G and 1Y is ascribed to the variation of ligand L orientations.

A hexadentate macrocyclic N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligand precursor (H4L)(PF6)4 containing four benzimidazolium and two secondary amine groups, has been synthesized and characterized. Coordination chemistry of this new macrocyclic diamine-tetracarbene ligand has been studied by the synthesis of its Ag(I), Au(I), Ni(II), and Pd(II) complexes. Reactions of (H4L)(PF6)4 with different equiv of Ag2O result in Ag(I) complexes [Ag(H2L)](PF6)3 (1) and [Ag2(H2L)](PF6)4 (2). A mononuclear Au(I) complex [Au(H2L)](PF6)3 (3) and a trinuclear Au(I) complex [Au3(H2L)(Cl)2](PF6) (4) are obtained by transmetalation of 1 and 2 with AuCl(SMe2), respectively. Reactions of (H4L)(PF6)4 with Ni(OAc)2 and Pd(OAc)2 in the presence of NaOAc yield [Ni(L)](PF6)2 (5) and [Pd(L)](PF6)2 (6), respectively, containing one Ni(II) and Pd(II) ion with distorted square-planar geometry. Two hybrids (C5H6N)CdCl3 (1) and (C5H6N)Cd2Cl5 (2) were synthesized by stoichiometric regulation of reactants. 1 with a one-dimensional chain-like structure shows a step-like dielectric anomaly at around 158 K. 2 with a layered structure undergoes a prominent phase transition in the vicinity of 182 K, accompanying obvious dielectric relaxation behavior in a broad temperature range. Systematic characterization, such as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and dielectric measurements, has demonstrated that the phase transitions of 1 and 2 are both attributable to the dynamic motion of the organic cation. Significantly, dimensionality modulation triggers the tunable dielectric responses in these two compounds. Thus, regulation of the phase transition temperature and dielectric responses in the various dimensions of the structure is a potentially effective method to construct tunable dielectric phase transition materials.

α-NaSrBO3 is an excellent phosphor host for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diode (w-LED) application with very interesting properties. However, it undergoes a phase transformation to β-NaSrBO3 at the LED working temperature. In this study, the high-temperature phase β-NaSrBO3 was stabilized to room temperature by introducing Na(+) and Ce(3+) via a high-temperature solid-state reaction method. The crystal structure of β-NaSrBO3 was determined from the powder X-ray diffraction data. It crystallizes in space group P21/c with the following lattice parameters: a = 6.06214(8) Å, b = 5.41005(7) Å, c = 9.1468(1) Å, β = 102.116(1)°, and V = 293.301(7) Å(3). Na and Sr sites are found to be mixed occupied by each other, and the isolated [BO3](3-) anionic groups are distributed in parallel. Ce(3+)-activated β-NaSrBO3:Ce(3+) blue-emitting phosphors were synthesized. The temperature-dependent photoluminescence spectra indicate that the thermal stability of β-NaSrBO3:Ce(3+) is better than that of α-NaSrBO3:Ce(3+) at the same temperature. A near-ultraviolet pumped warm w-LED with a β-NaSrBO3:0.05Ce(3+) phosphor as the blue component was fabricated. The w-LED lamp after illumination at 250 mA gives chromaticity coordinates, a color rendering index, and a correlated color temperature of (0.3821, 0.3430), 92.8, and 3654 K, respectively.

Multifunctional-material-integrated various properties have been an attractive research field. In spite of persistent explorations into such materials, the conditions of coexistence are still confused. The one-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid compound bis(cyclohexylammonium) tetrachlorocadmate(II) (1), in which the adjacent infinite [CdCl4]n(-) chains are connected to each other though Cd···Cl weak interactions to form perovskite-type layers of corner-sharing CdCl6 octahedra separated by cyclohexylammonium cation bilayers, was synthesized. It undergoes two successive structural phase transitions, at 215 and 367 K, which were confirmed by systematic characterizations including differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses, and dielectric and second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements. A precise structural analysis discloses that the phase transition at 215 K is induced by the disorder-order transition of cyclohexylammonium cations, while the phase transition at 367 K derives from changes in the relative location of Cd atoms. Emphatically, both the dielectric constant and SHG intensity of 1 show a striking change between low and high states at around 367 K, which reveals that 1 might be considered as a potential dielectric and nonlinear optical (NLO) switch with high-temperature response characterization, excellent reversibility, and obvious change of states.

The preparation and properties of a new cyano complex containing the Ru3(μ3-O) core, [Ru3(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CN)] (1; py = pyridine), are reported. Complex 1 in CH2Cl2 showed intense absorption bands at 244, 334, and 662 nm, corresponding to a π-π* transition of the ligand, cluster-to-ligand charge transfer, and intracluster transitions, respectively. The cyclic voltammogram of 1 in 0.1 M (n-Bu)4NPF6-CH2Cl2 showed redox waves for the processes Ru3(II,II,III)/Ru3(II,III,III), Ru3(II,III,III)/Ru3(III,III,III), and Ru3(III,III,III)/Ru3(III,III,IV) at E1/2 = -1.49, -0.26, and +1.03 V vs Ag/AgCl, respectively. The first two redox potentials are more negative by ca. 0.2 V in comparison with the corresponding potentials of [Ru3(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)3](+). This is in sharp contrast to the positive shifts of the corresponding waves of [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CO)]. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)3], [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CN)](-), and [Ru3(II,III,III)(μ3-O)(μ-CH3COO)6(py)2(CO)] showed that the positive charge of the ruthenium is delocalized over the triruthenium cores of the first two and is localized as Ru(II)(CO){Ru(III)(py)}2 in the CO complex. The calculations explain the difference in the π interactions of the two ligands with the triruthenium cores.

We have investigated the crystal structure and phase stability, elastic incompressibility, and electronic properties of PbS based on high-pressure neutron diffraction, in-situ electrical resistance measurements, and first-principles calculations. The refinements show that the orthorhombic phase is structurally isotypic with indium iodide (InI) adopting a Cmcm structure (B33). The cubic-to-orthorhombic transition occurs at ∼2.1(1) GPa with a 3.8% volume collapse and a positive Clausius-Clapeyron slope. Phase-transition induced elastic softening is also observed, which is presumably attributed to the enhanced metallic bonding in the B33 phase. On the basis of band structure simulations, the cubic and orthorhombic phases are typical of direct and indirect semiconductors with band gaps of 0.47(1) and 1.04(1) eV, respectively, which supports electrical resistivity measurements of an abrupt jump at the structural transition. On the basis of the resolved structure for B33, the phase transition paths for B1→B33→B2 involve translation of a trigonal prism in B1 and motion of the next-nearest neighbor Pb atom into {SPb7} coordination and subsequent lattice distortion in the B33 phase.

A Zn(2+)-responsive bimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and luminescence imaging probe GdL was synthesized. The relaxivity and luminescence properties were examined. In the presence of 0.5 equiv of Zn(2+), the longitudinal relaxivity is increased from 3.8 mM(-1) s(-1) to 5.9 mM(-1) s(-1) at 23 MHz and 25 °C with 55% enhancement, whereas the fluorescence exhibits a 7-fold increase. The Zn(2+) responsive imaging probe shows favorable selectivity and tolerance over a variety of biologically relevant anions and metal ions in physiological pH range for both relaxivity and luminescence. In vitro phantom images and confocal fluorescence images in living cells show that the bimodal Zn(2+) probe can effectively enhance T(1)-weighted imaging contrast and luminescence imaging effect through Zn(2+) coordination with excellent cellmembrane permeability and biocompatibility. Spectral and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) studies indicate that two different Zn(2+)-bound species, (GdL)(2)Zn and GdLZn, are formed when 0.5 and 1 equiv of Zn(2+) are bound to GdL complex, respectively. Crystal structural determination and dysprosium-induced (17)O NMR shift (DIS) experiment demonstrate that the increased molecular weight and the improved molecular rigidity upon complexation of Zn(2+) with GdL is the primary factor for relaxivity enhancement. Significant enhancement of the luminescence is due to a heavy atom effect and much increased molecular rigidity upon Zn(2+) binding to 8-sulfonamidoquinoline chromophore.

High-quality α-MnSe nanocubes were successfully prepared for the first time by an effective hot injection synthesis strategy. This approach was simple but robust and had been applied to the controllable synthesis of different sizes and diverse morphologies of α-MnSe nanostructures. The crystal phases, compositions, and microstructures of these nanostructures had been systematically characterized with a series of techniques. As a proof-of-concept application, the as-prepared α-MnSe nanocubes were used as an anode material for a lithium ion battery, which exhibited superior rate ability and ultralong cycle stability in half-cell and full-cell tests. Importantly, the phase transition from α-MnSe to β-MnSe during the electrochemical process was proved by ex situ X-ray diffraction and selected area electron diffraction. The excellent electrochemical performance of α-MnSe endowed its potential as an anode material candidate for high performance lithium storage.

Planar platinum(II) complex Pt(Me(3)SiC≡CbpyC≡CSiMe(3))(C≡CC(6)H(4)CF(3)-4)(2) (6) with 5,5'-bis(trimethylsilylethynyl)-2,2'-bipyridine and 4-trifluoromethylphenylacetylide exhibits remarkable luminescence vapochromic and mechanochromic properties and a thermo-triggered luminescence change. Solid-state 6 is selectively sensitive to vapors of oxygen-containing volatile compounds such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), dioxane, and tetrahydropyrane (THP) with phosphorescence vapochromic response red shifts from 561 and 608 nm to 698 nm (THF), 689 nm (dioxane), and 715 nm (THP), respectively. Upon being mechanically ground, desolvated 6, 6·CH(2)Cl(2), and 6·(1)/(2)CH(2)ClCH(2)Cl exhibit significant mechanoluminescence red shifts from 561 and 608 nm to 730 nm, while vapochromic crystalline species 6·THF, 6·dioxane, or 6·THP affords a mechanoluminescence blue shift from 698 nm (THF), 689 nm (dioxane), or 715 nm (THP) to 645 nm, respectively. When the compounds are heated, a thermo-triggered luminescence change occurs, in which bright yellow luminescence at 561 and 608 nm turns to red luminescence at 667 nm with a drastic red shift. The multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence switches have been monitored by the changes in emission spectra and X-ray diffraction patterns. Both X-ray crystallographic and density functional theory studies suggest that the variation in the intermolecular Pt-Pt interaction is the key factor in inducing an intriguing luminescence switch.

A new organic-inorganic hybrid switchable and tunable dielectric compound, [(CH3)4P]4[Mn(SCN)6] (1), exhibits three distinct dielectric states above room temperature and undergoes two reversible solid-state phase transitions, including a structural phase transition at 330 K and a ferroelastic phase transition with the Aizu notation of mmmF2/m at 352 K. The variable-temperature structural analyses disclose that the origin of the phase transitions and dielectric anomalies can be ascribed to the reorientation or motion of both the [(CH3)4P](+) cations and [Mn(SCN)6](4-) anions in solid-state crystals.

Reactions of 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)isoindoline (HL1), 1,3-bis(2-pyridylimino)benz(f)isoindoline (HL2), or 5,6-dihydro-2,3-diphenyl-5-(pyridin-2-ylimino)pyrrolo[3,4-b]pyrazin-7-ylidene)pyridin-2-amine (HL3) with Pt(tht)(2)Cl(2) (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) afforded the corresponding Pt(L)Cl complexes. A series of neutral platinum(II) alkynyl complexes Pt(L)(C[triple bond]CR) were prepared by reactions of the precursors Pt(L)Cl with alkynyl ligands through CuI-catalyzed platinum acetylide sigma coordination. Crystal structural determination of Pt(L3)Cl (3), Pt(L1)(C[triple bond]CPh) (4), and Pt(L1)(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)Bu(t)-4) (6) by X-ray crystallography revealed that the neutral platinum(Pi) complexes with monoanionic tridentate L ligands display more perfect square-planar geometry than that in platinum(II) complexes with neutral tridentate 2,2':6',2''-terpyridyl ligands. Both the Pt(L)Cl and Pt(L)(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4) complexes exhibit low-energy absorption at 400-550 nm, arising primarily from pi --pi*(L) intraligand (IL) and 5d(Pt) --pi*(L) metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions as suggested from density functional theory calculations. They display bright-orange to red room-temperature luminescence in fluid dichloromethane solutions with microsecond to submicrosecond ranges of emissive lifetimes and 0.03-3.79% quantum yields, originating mainly from (3)IL and (3)MLCT excited states. Compared with the emissive state in Pt(L)Cl complexes, substitution of the coordinated Cl with C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4 in Pt(L)(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4) complexes induces an obviously enhanced contribution from the (3)[pi(C[triple bond]CC(6)H(4)R-4) --pi*(L)] ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (LLCT) triplet state. The photophysical properties can be finely tuned by modifying both the L and alkynyl ligands. The calculated absorption and emission spectra in dichloromethane coincide well with those measured in a fluid dichloromethane solution at ambient temperature.

Reaction of polymeric gold(I) acetylide species (bpyC[triple bond]CAu)n (bpyC[triple bond]CH = 5-ethynyl-2,2'-bipyridine) with diphosphine ligands Ph2P(CH2)nPPh2 (n = 2-6) or 1,1'-bis(diphenylphosphino)-ferrocene (dppf) in dichloromethane induces isolation of binuclear gold(I) complexes (bpyC[triple bond]CAu)2{mu-Ph2P(CH2)nPPh2} or (bpyC[triple bond]CAu)2(mu-dppf). Complexation of Ln(hfac)3 (hfac = hexafluoroacetylacetonate, Ln = Nd, Eu, Er, Yb) subunits to the binuclear gold(I) complexes through 2,2'-bipyridyl chelation gives the corresponding Au4Ln4 or Au2Ln2 heteropolynuclear complexes. Noticeably, upon formation of the Au4Ln4 arrays by complexation of (bpyC[triple bond]CAu)2(mu-Ph2P(CH2)4PPh2) (3) with Ln(hfac)3 units, trans-conformation in 3 transforms dramatically to the cis-arranged form due to the strong driving force from ligand-unsupported Au-Au contacts between two Au2Ln2 subunits. In contrast, cis-conformation in (bpyC[triple bond]CAu)2(mu-dppf) (6) stabilized by Au-Au interactions is reversed to the trans-oriented form upon formation of Au2Ln2 arrays by introducing Ln(hfac)3 units through 2,2-bipyridyl chelation. The binuclear gold(I) complexes show bright blue luminescence featured by ligand-centered pi --pi* (C[triple bond]Cbpy) states together with low-energy emission at 500-540 nm, associated with 3(pi--pi*) excited states, mixed probably with some characteristic from (Au-Au) --(C[triple bond]Cbpy) 3MMLCT transition. For Au4Ln4 or Au2Ln2 complexes, sensitized lanthanide luminescence is achieved by energy transfer from Au-acetylide chromophores with lifetimes in the sub-millisecond range for EuIII complexes, whereas in the microsecond range for near-infrared emitting NdIII, ErIII, and YbIII species.

When 3-ethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline (HCCphen) or 3,8-diethynyl-1,10-phenanthroline (HCCphenCCH) is utilized as a bifunctional bridging ligand via stepwise molecular fabrication, a series of Pt-Ru and Pt-Re heteronuclear complexes composed of both platinum(II) terpyridyl acetylide chromophores and a Ru(phen)(bpy)2/Re(phen)(CO)3Cl subunit were prepared by complexation of one or two Pt((t)Bu3tpy)(2+) units to the mononuclear Ru(II) or Re(I) precursor through platinum acetylide sigma coordination. These Pt-Ru and Pt-Re complexes exhibit intense low-energy absorptions originating from both Pt- and Ru (Re)-based metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) states in the near-visible region. They are strongly luminescent in both solid states and fluid solutions with a submicrosecond range of lifetimes and 0.27-6.58% of quantum yields in degassed acetonitrile. For the Pt-Ru heteronuclear complexes, effective intercomponent Pt --Ru energy transfer takes place from the platinum(II) terpyridyl acetylide chromophores to the ruthenium(II) tris(diimine)-based emitters. In contrast, dual emission from both Pt- and Re-based (3)MLCT excited states occurs because of less efficient intercomponent Pt --Re energy transfer in the Pt-Re heteronuclear complexes.

Preparation and characterization of a series of rodlike binuclear ruthenium polyynediyl complexes capped with redox-active organometallic fragments [(bph)(PPh3)2Ru]+ (bph=N-(benzoyl)-N'-(picolinylidene)-hydrazine) or [(Phtpy)(PPh3)2Ru]2+ (Phtpy=4'-phenyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine) have been carried out. The length of the molecular rods is extended by successive insertion of 2,5-thiophene or 1,4-phenylene spacers in the bridging ligands. Oxidation of thiophene-containing Ru2II,II complexes induces isolation of stable Ru2II,III or Ru2III,III species. Electrochemical and UV-vis-NIR spectral studies demonstrate that the polyynediyl bridges with 2,5-thiophene units are more favorable for metal-metal charge transfer compared with those containing the same number of 1,4-phenylene units. Successive increase of thiophene spacers in mixed-valence complexes {RuII}-CC(C4H2S)mCC-{RuIII} (m=1, 2, 3) induced a smooth transition from almost electronic delocalization (m=1) to localization (m=3). For binuclear ruthenium complexes with intramolecular electron transfer transmitted across nine Ru-C and C-C bonds, electronic conveying capability follows {Ru}-CC(CC)2CC-{Ru}>{Ru}-CC(C4H2S)CC-{Ru}>{Ru}-CC(C6H4)CC-{Ru}>{Ru}-CC(CH=CH)2CC-{Ru}. It is revealed that molecular wires capped with electron-rich (bph)(PPh3)2Ru endgroups are much more favorable for electronic communication than the corresponding electron-deficient (Phtpy)(PPh3)2Ru-containing counterparts. The intermetallic electronic communication is fine-tuned by modification of both the bridging spacers and the ancillary ligands.

The most advanced UV-vis and IR NLO materials are usually borates and chalcogenides, respectively. But thioborates, especially thio-borometalates, are extremely rare. Here, four new such compounds are discovered by solid state reactions representing 0D structures constructed by isolated BQ3 trigonal planes and discrete MQ3 pyramids with Ba(2+) cations filling among them, centrosymmetric monoclinic P21/c Ba3(BS3)1.5(MS3)0.5 (M = Sb, Bi) 1, 2 with a = 12.9255(9), 12.946(2) Å; b = 21.139(2), 21.170(2)Å; c = 8.4194(6), 8.4207(8) Å; β = 101.739(5), 101.688(7)°; V = 2252.3(3), 2259.9(3) Å(3) and noncentrosymmetric hexagonal P6̅2m Ba3(BQ3)(SbQ3) (Q = S, Se) 3, 4 with a = b = 17.0560(9), 17.720(4) Å; c = 10.9040(9), 11.251(3) Å; V = 2747.1(3), 3060(2) Å(3). 3 exhibits the strongest SHG among thioborates that is about three times that of the benchmark AgGaS2 at 2.05 μm. 1 and 3 also show an interesting structure relationship correlated to the size mismatching of the anionic building units that can be controlled by the experimental loading ratio of B:Sb. Syntheses, structure characterizations, and electronic structures based on the density functional theory calculations are reported.

So far, more than 1000 UV converted phosphors have been reported for potential application in white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs), but most of them (e.g., Y2O2S:Eu, YAG:Ce or CaAlSiN3:Eu) suffer from intrinsic problems such as thermal instability, color aging or re-absorption by commixed phosphors in the coating of the devices. In this case, it becomes significant to search a single-phased phosphor, which can efficiently convert UV light to white lights. Herein, we report a promising candidate of a white light emitting X2-type Y2SiO5:Eu(3+),Bi(3+) phosphor, which can be excitable by UV light and address the problems mentioned above. Single Bi(3+)-doped X2-type Y2SiO5 exhibits three discernible emission peaks at ∼355, ∼408, and ∼504 nm, respectively, upon UV excitation due to three types of bismuth emission centers, and their relative intensity depends tightly on the incident excitation wavelength. In this regard, proper selection of excitation wavelength can lead to tunable emissions of Y2SiO5:Bi(3+) between blue and green, which is partially due to the energy transfer among the Bi centers. As a red emission center Eu(3+) is codoped into Y2SiO5:Bi(3+), energy transfer has been confirmed happening from Bi(3+) to Eu(3+) via an electric dipole-dipole (d-d) interaction. Our experiments reveal that it is easily realizable to create the white or tunable emissions by adjusting the Eu(3+) content and the excitation schemes. Moreover, a single-phased white light emission phosphor, X2-type Y1.998SiO5:0.01Eu(3+),0.01 Bi(3+), has been achieved with excellent resistance against thermal quenching and a QE of 78%. At 200 °C, it preserves90% emission intensity of that at 25 °C. Consequent three time yoyo experiments of heating-cooling prove no occurrence of thermal degradation. A WLED lamp has been successfully fabricated with a CIE chromaticity coordinate (0.3702, 0.2933), color temperature 4756 K, and color rendering index of 65 by applying the phosphor onto a UV LED chip.

A layered organic-inorganic hybrid compound, tetra(cyclopentylammonium) decachlorotricadmate(II) (1), in which the two-dimensional [Cd3Cl10](4-)n networks built up from three face-sharing CdCl6 octahedra are separated by cyclopentylammonium cation bilayers, has been discovered as a new phase transition material. It undergoes two successive structural phase transitions, at 197.3 and 321.6 K, which were confirmed by differential scanning calorimetry measurements, variable-temperature structural analyses, and dielectric measurements. The crystal structures of 1 determined at 93, 298, and 343 K are solved in P2₁2₁2₁, Pbca, and Cmca, respectively. A precise analysis of the structural differences between these three structures reveals that the origin of the phase transition at 197.3 K is ascribed to the order-disorder transition of the cyclopentylammonium cations, while the phase transition at 321.6 K originates from the distortion of the two-dimensional [Cd3Cl10](4-)n network.

A series of Ag(I)-Cu(I) heteronuclear alkynyl complexes were prepared by reaction of polymeric (MCCC(6)H(4)R-4)(n)() (M = Cu(I) or Ag(I); R = H, CH(3), OCH(3), NO(2), COCH(3)) with [M'(2)(mu-Ph(2)PXPPh(2))(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2) (M' = Ag(I) or Cu(I); X = NH or CH(2)). Heterohexanuclear complexes [Ag(4)Cu(2)(mu-Ph(2)PNHPPh(2))(4)(CCC(6)H(4)R-4)(4)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, 1; CH(3), 2) were afforded when X = NH, and heterooctanuclear complexes [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)R-4)(6)(MeCN)](ClO(4))(2) (R = H, 3; CH(3), 4; OCH(3), 5; NO(2), 6) were isolated when X = CH(2). Self-assembly reaction between (MCCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(n) and [M'(2)(mu-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(2)(MeCN)(2)](ClO(4))(2), however, gave heterohexadecanuclear complex [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(6)](2)(ClO(4))(4) (7). The heterohexanuclear complexes 1 and 2 show a bicapped cubic skeleton (Ag(4)Cu(2)C(4)) consisting of four Ag(I) and two Cu(I) atoms and four acetylide C donors. The heterooctanuclear complexes 3-6 exhibit a waterwheel-like structure that can be regarded as two Ag(3)Cu(CCC(6)H(5))(3) components put together by three bridging Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2) ligands. The heterohexadecanuclear complex 7 can be viewed as a dimer of heterooctanuclear complex [Ag(6)Cu(2)(micro-Ph(2)PCH(2)PPh(2))(3)(CCC(6)H(4)COCH(3)-4)(6)](ClO(4))(2) through the silver and acetyl oxygen (Ag-O = 2.534 (4) A) linkage between two waterwheel-like Ag(6)Cu(2) units. All of the complexes show intense luminescence in the solid states and in fluid solutions. The microsecond scale of lifetimes in the solid state at 298 K reveals that the emission is phosphorescent in nature. The emissive state in compounds 1-5 is likely derived from a (3)LMCT (CCC(6)H(4)R-4 --Ag(4)Cu(2) or Ag(6)Cu(2)) transition, mixed with a metal cluster-centered (d --s) excited state. The lowest lying excited state in compounds 6 and 7 containing electron-deficient 4-nitrophenylacetylide and 4-acetylphenylacetylide, respectively, however, is likely dominated by an intraligand (3)[pi --pi] character.

New quaternary tellurides, Cs(2)Ge(3)M(6)Te(14) (M = Ga, In), were discovered by solid-state reactions. These compounds crystallize in space group P3ml (No. 164), with a = b = 8.2475(2) Å, c = 14.2734(8) Å, and V = 840.82(6) Å(3) (Z = 1) for Cs(2)Ge(3)Ga(6)Te(14) (1) and a = b = 8.5404(2) Å, c = 14.6766(8) Å, and V = 927.07(6) Å(3) (Z = 1) for Cs(2)Ge(3)In(6)Te(14) (2). The remarkable structural feature is the novel three-dimensional [Ge(3)M(6)Te(14)](2-) anionic framework made by condensed In(6)Te(14) (or Ga(6)Te(14)) layers that are connected alternately by dimeric Ge(3+)(2)Te(6) units and Ge(2+)Te(6) octahedra along the c direction. The presence of Ge centers with different oxidation states is also supported by the results of the electron localization function calculation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurement.
