Cogeneration is considered as one of the promising energy efficient techniques for producing electricity and useful thermal energy from a single fuel source. This paper describes a feasibility study of the implementation of different cogeneration options to a paper mill to evaluate their energy saving potentials and economic benefits. The investigated systems in this paper are gas turbine, steam turbine and combined cycle cogeneration options evaluated and compared based on energy utilisation factor and Annualised Life Cycle Cost (ALCC) analysis. The results of energy analysis show that all Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems satisfy the thermal energy needs of the mill while the combined cycle cogeneration option generates the highest amount of electric energy equal to 10.91 MW. The gas turbine cogeneration system is shown as the most advantageous system from overall energy point of view with the highest energy utilisation factor of 78% meeting the heat and electric requirements of the mill and exporting 21,329 MWh of additional electricity to the grid. Economic feasibility results also show that an overall saving of 5.12 million US$ can be achieved by implementing the gas turbine cogeneration system to the mill making it as the best cogeneration option with the least overall ALCC of 1.34 million US$ and the maximum percentage of CO 2 emission reduction (68%) when compared with the other options. This paper examines the potential of solar and hydrogen (H 2) energy-based hybrid energy systems for residential applications. The growing need for energy and the demand for sustainable energy sources have led to the development of integrated energy systems that combine renewable energy resources to meet energy needs. This paper overviews recent studies on hybrid energy systems for on-grid and off-grid residential utilizations. It discusses the system configuration and components of hybrid energy systems, including solar panels, electrolyzers, fuel cells (FC), and batteries. It also covers the technical optimization of integrated energy systems, including sizing, control strategies, and economic analysis. The key findings of this review paper indicate that hybrid energy systems can offer dependable and sustainable energy for residential applications. Through numerical analyses, the optimal dimensioning of the system elements and control strategies can significantly enhance the system's performance and lower the cost of energy. This study also highlights the challenges and opportunities for integrating hybrid energy systems within residential applications. With the development of energy technology, hydrogen is gradually becoming widely used. China is also rapidly developing its own hydrogen energy industry in an effort to accomplish the "dual carbon target'. Hydrogen from methane is one of the mainstream sources, of which hydrogen from methane cracking is the decomposition of methane into hydrogen and solid carbon, with the solid carbon also having a high economic value. In particular, this technology does not emit carbon dioxide, which is very friendly to the environment, but it cannot avoid larger energy consumption. In contrast, hydrogen production from methane cracking driven by solar energy not only combines the characteristics of no CO 2 emission, but also greatly reduces the consumption of primary energy, which is the future development trend of hydrogen production from methane. This paper provides a brief overview of the various technological pathways for methane to hydrogen production in the context of China's actual development, focusing on the current status of the development and application of solar methane cracking to hydrogen production technologies at home and abroad. Among them, this paper mainly discusses the characteristics of solar reactors of different sizes and structures, and summarizes the results of related optimization studies. Meanwhile, the application of catalysts in solar reactors and the problem of carbon deposition are analyzed, and the practical application of solar methane cracking hydrogen production system is outlined. Fuel cell electric buses (FCBs) have proven to be a technically viable solution for transportation, owing to various advantages, such as reliability, simplicity, better energy efficiency, and quietness of operation. However, large-scale adoption of FCBs is hindered by the lack of extensive and structured infrastructure and the high cost of clean hydrogen. Many studies agree that one of the significant contributors to the lack of competitiveness of green hydrogen is the cost of electricity for its production, followed by transportation costs. On the one hand, to reduce the investment cost of the electrolyzer, high operating hours should be achieved; on the other, as the number of operating hours decreases, the impact of the electricity costs declines. This paper presents an innovative algorithm for a scalable hydrogen refuelling station (HRS) capable of successfully matching and identifying the most cost-efficient levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) produced via electrolysis and connected to the grid, based on the HRS components' cost curves and the hourly average electricity price profile. The objective is to identify the least-cost range of LCOH by considering both the electric energy and the investment costs associated with a hydrogen demand given by different FCB sizes and electrolyzer rated powers. In addition, sensitivity analyses have been conducted to quantify the technology cost margins, and a cost comparison between the refuelling of an FCB fleet and the recharging infrastructure required for an equivalent fleet of Battery Electric Buse (BEB) has been performed. An LCOH of around 10.5 €/kg varying from 12 €/kg (2 FCB) to 10.2 €/kg (30 FCB) has been found for the best-optimized configurations. The final major conclusion of this paper is that FCB technology is currently not economically competitive. Still, a cost contraction of the electric energy price and the electrolyzer capital investment would lead to a 50% decrease in the LCOH. Furthermore, increasing renewable energies into the grid may shift the electricity cost curve, resulting in higher prices when the BEB recharging demand is more significant. High-pressure proton exchange membrane (PEM) water electrolysis for hydrogen production is a crucial method to achieve low energy consumption, high efficiency, minimal pollution, and seamless integration with storage systems. Despite its potential, the current application of high-pressure PEM water electrolysis faces several challenges. This paper provides a concise analysis of the research advancements in high-pressure PEM water electrolysis for hydrogen production, focusing on technical bottlenecks within high-pressure devices. It explores key issues such as gas cross-permeability, membrane degradation, membrane shedding, and hydrogen embrittlement encountered during high-pressure PEM water electrolysis for hydrogen production. Hydrogen is a kind of clean renewable energy with great development potential. However, traditional electrocatalytic water splitting methods often require high energy consumption and expensive catalysts, which limits their practical application. Transition metal selenides (TMSes), as a new type of hydrogen production materials from electrolytic water, have been the focus of research in recent years. The basic principle of electrochemical water cracking and the preparation of TMSes are reviewed in this paper. The electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution, oxygen evolution and integral water cracking based on TMSes, including single metal selenides, binary metal selenides, and multinary mixed metal selenides, are discussed. In order to meet the hydrogen refueling demand of fuel cell vehicles and reduce the cost of HRS operation process, it is necessary to study the hydrogen refueling process of cascade hydrogen storage system of hydrogen refueling station. In this paper, a thermodynamic model of the hydrogen refueling process for fuel cell vehicles is established, and the effect of the variation of these thermodynamic parameters on the specific energy consumption and utilization rate of the hydrogen refueling process is investigated in terms of the pressure ratio and capacity of the hydrogen storage tank, which is the core of the hydrogen refueling station, consisting of multiple hydrogen storage tanks. The results show that the specific energy consumption and hydrogen utilization of the hydrogen refueling station decreases as the ratio of the nominal pressure of the medium-pressure stage to the nominal pressure of the high-pressure stage increases over the course of the pressure ratio change. In addition, the capacity variation is only slightly changed as a result of the pressure ratio variation. Therefore, the lowest ratio of specific energy consumption can be found by fixing the utilization rate and by changing the pressure ratio. Due to the widespread use of multi-generation systems utilizing renewable energy sources and the growing global demand for such systems from both economic and environmental considerations, numerous researchers have focused on the design and evaluation of their performance. To this end, this research presents a biomass-based multi-generation system with an innovative and practical design that can generate electricity, heat, and hydrogen. This system includes a modified gas turbine cycle, a supercritical CO 2 (SCO 2) cycle, a transcritical CO 2 (TCO 2) cycle, a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, and a PEM fuel cell unit. This study aims to evaluate the impact of various biomass sources (paper, wood, paddy husk, and municipal solid waste) on the system performance. The proposed system has been analyzed using the first and second laws of thermodynamics. This system uses the maximum capacity to produce power, heat and hydrogen. A fuel cell unit has been used to consume hydrogen and generate more electricity. In the basic mode, the system has energy and exergy efficiencies of 47.89% and 32.26%, respectively, and can produce 2.74 kg/h of hydrogen. The biomass fuel consumption rate within the system is 0.055 kg/s. The overall exergy destruction of the system amounts to 1240 kW, with the biomass boiler and the condenser being the components that experience the greatest exergy destruction, registering values of 535.5 kW and 432.3 kW, respectively. The single-stack fuel cell system is utilized extensively in several industries. Unfortunately, the main problems are its low efficiency and durability, and unsatisfied reliability, especially in the high-power situation. Due to its significant performance, which includes high output power, durability, and reliability, multi-stack fuel cell systems (MFCS) are becoming more and more attractive. In this study, it is aimed to develope a control algorithm in parallel structure in the Matlab/Simulink software for the efficient use of hydrogen fuel consumption of PEM fuel cells – based boost converter using PI controller with PSO method. Models of both single and parallel connected PEM fuel cells were created in Matlab using mathematical equations in this paper. The analysis made in the study were applied for both models. PEMFCs were connected in parallel and only one DC-DC converter was used for the entire system. According to the load change, the required number of cells are activated due to control algorithm to provide the required power. There is a great desire to integrate multiple energy systems by forming low-carbon energy hubs. Among various energy platforms, the integration of power and gas networks via Power-to-Gas (PtG) technologies is introduced as a promising solution to enhance the flexibility of power grids and facilitate seamless adoption for high penetration levels of renewable energy resources. In addition, the production of green hydrogen from waste/inexpensive clean electricity has recently been identified as a potential means for large-scale energy storage, deployment of hydrogen mobility, and decarbonization of several processes that utilize hydrogen. As integrated hydrogen-based energy hubs (H 2 Hubs) attract more attention for widespread deployment, the security of such new platforms against various cyberattacks is also becoming a critical topic for investigation. This paper proposes a new data estimation technique, developed and integrated with H 2 Hubs scheduling models, for real-time optimal adaptive collection and organization of the system operating parameters for cybersecurity assessment. A new formulation is presented for the adaptive formation of a newly proposed concept, referred to as the system feasibility area , via real-time acquisition of the system operating information. The created feasibility areas are utilized for real-time post-occurrence detection of the bad scheduling data that is invisible to the existing cybersecurity layers. Numerical studies are conducted to demonstrate the efficacy and feasibility of the proposed model. The paper describes a new method for determining the energy efficiency of the life cycles of wind farms by the aggregated data of energy costs. The rationale for the use of aggregated data to determine energy costs during the life cycle of the wind farms is given. The classification of wind turbines and wind farms elements by the parameters and technical characteristics of the elements with subsequent division into groups for which aggregated data of energy costs are determined is given. Within the framework of the method have been developed an algorithm for determining energy costs on the production of elements of wind turbines and wind farms and formulas for their calculation during the life cycle of wind farms. In order to test the method, energy cost was calculated during the life cycle for two wind farms with wind turbines that differ parameters and technical characteristics of the elements and their energy efficiency was determined. It has been shown that the use of a hydrogen storage unit as part of a wind turbine makes it possible to efficiently use energy during down periods and increase the efficiency of the installation by 25–30%. It is noteworthy that a wind-hydrogen farm allows not only to accumulate excess energy during lean periods, but also to save the resource of wind turbines. When the energy reserve in the hydrogen battery reaches close to full, part of the wind turbines of the wind-hydrogen farm can be automatically temporarily stopped in a given order. This paper presents a cryogenic turbo-electric hybrid propulsion system (TEHPS) for a 70–80 seat class turboprop regional aircraft, integrating superconducting technology with liquid hydrogen (LH 2) cooling. LH 2 is selected as the cooling medium for the designed cryogenic cooling circuit, and the evaporated hydrogen gas is channeled to a hydrogen fuel cell for electricity generation, making full use of the energy content of the hydrogen. Parametric modeling of critical components is conducted to determine mass, power and heat loss parameters under feasible operating temperature conditions. Four propulsion schemes are conceptualized based on power matching combinations of turbo-engines, hydrogen fuel cell and battery during cruise, descent and landing phases. Performance comparison and analysis of the cryogenic TEHPS for a typical mission profile in 2035 is conducted, considering three projected scenarios – conservative, baseline, and optimistic – derived from existing data. The results show that propulsion Scheme 1, combining turbo-engines, fuel cell and battery for cruise, significantly reduces aviation fuel mass and pollutants emissions, cutting fuel consumption by 34.2%–38.6% at specific power parameters and potentially doubling the cruising range. Propulsion Scheme 3, employing turbo-engines for cruise and a combination of fuel cell and battery for descent and landing, achieves the lowest total mass and highest power-to-weight (PTW). The shared energy storage system is recognized as a promising business model for the coordinated operation of integrated energy systems (IES) to improve the utilization of energy storage and the consumption of renewable energy. As the hydrogen energy gradually receives more attention, this paper constructs the structure of a hybrid hydrogen energy storage system shared by an IES alliance in a dynamic pricing mode. A bi-level optimization model for the shared hybrid hydrogen energy storage system (SHHESS) is proposed to optimize the capacity configuration decisions and the pricing strategy jointly. The upper level determines the capacity and dynamic price of SHHESS with maximum profits and the lower level obtains the optimal operation of the IES alliance minimizing the total operation costs. The proposed model is solved by an improved PSO-GA algorithm and CPLEX solver. Finally, numerical tests are conducted in different scenarios. The results show that the hybrid energy storage system improves the daily profits of SHHESS by 70.3% and 5.44%, and reduces the renewable energy curtailment by 80.93% and 48.92% respectively compared to the battery-only and hydrogen-only systems. Additionally, the daily operation cost of the IES alliance is 35.2% lower than the individual operation scenario. The measures needed to limit global warming pose a particular challenge to current fossil fuel exporters, who must not only decarbonise their local energy systems, but also compensate for the expected decline in fossil fuel revenues. One possibility is seen in the export of green hydrogen. Using Algeria as a case study, this paper analyses how different levels of ambition in hydrogen exports, energy efficiency and fuel switching affect the cost-optimal expansion of the power sector for a given overall emissions reduction path. Despite falling costs for photovoltaics and wind turbines, the results indicate that in countries with very low natural gas prices, such as Algeria, a fully renewable electricity system by 2050 is unlikely without appropriate policy measures. The expansion of renewable energy should therefore start early, given the high annual growth rates required, which will be reinforced by additional green hydrogen exports. In parallel, energy efficiency is a key factor as it directly mitigates CO2 emissions from fossil fuels and reduces domestic electricity demand, which could instead be used for hydrogen production. Integrating electrolysers into the power system could potentially help to reduce specific costs through load shifting. Overall, it seems advisable to analyse hydrogen exports together with local decarbonisation in order to better understand their interactions and to reduce emissions as efficiently as possible. The development of large energy systems based on renewable energy sources is accompanied by an increase in the input capacities of large grid storages. Taking into account the vector for decarbonization and maneuverability, the use of hydrogen as a fuel in the cycle of a diabatic compressed air energy storage (CAES) is a promising scientific and technical direction. This paper analyzes the key performance indicators of a compressed air energy storage in the presence and absence of thermal energy recovery within the cycle. In addition, an assessment was made of the prospects for the use of a methane-hydrogen mixture in gas turbines. At the end of the paper, a calculation of the process of plasma pyrolysis of methane is given as one of the possible methods for the production of hydrogen for use in energy purposes. Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is regarded as a promising energy conversion device because of its advantages such as high efficiency and fuel flexibility. With the advent of aviation electrification era, SOFC has been gradually studied as aviation power system. However, the high temperature operation and temperature gradient of SOFC bring challenges to practical application. Nowadays SOFC systems often use excessive air as coolant to reduce the temperature gradient of SOFC, which leads to the increases of the fuel consumption and reduction of the power generation efficiency. In order to maintain a lower temperature gradient with less air, a supercritical fuel cooled SOFC scheme is proposed in this paper. By establishing a one-dimensional model of conventional air-cooled fuel cell and fuel cell with fuel cooling channel. Through calculating the fuel cell temperature gradient under different working conditions, the results show that when the excess air coefficient (EAC) is 3, the temperature gradient of air-cooled SOFC reaches 22.7K/cm, while the temperature gradient of SOFC with fuel channel decreases to 8.35K/cm. In the context of renewable energy systems, microgrids (MG) are a solution to enhance the reliability of power systems. In the last few years, there has been a growing use of energy storage systems (ESSs), such as hydrogen and battery storage systems, because of their environmentally-friendly nature as power converter devices. However, their short lifespan represents a major challenge to their commercialization on a large scale. To address this issue, the control strategy proposed in this paper includes cost functions that consider the degradation of both hydrogen devices and batteries. Moreover, the proposed controller uses scenarios to reflect the stochastic nature of renewable energy resources (RESs) and load demand. The objective of this paper is to integrate a stochastic model predictive control (SMPC) strategy for an economical/environmental MG coupled with hydrogen and battery ESSs, which interacts with the main grid and external consumers. The system's participation in the electricity market is also managed. Numerical analyses are conducted using RESs profiles, and spot prices of solar panels and wind farms in Abu Dhabi, UAE, to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in the presence of uncertainties. Nanomaterials may have a key role since they can be applied in several vehicle components (such as H 2 storage, vehicle structure, batteries), but there is the concern that some nanomaterials may lead to relevant environmental impacts. This paper addresses a revision of the environmental impacts of different types of nanomaterials applied to alternative vehicles in order to reduce energy use (and consequently the global greenhouse gases emissions). A literature review is performed in order to analyze the recent improvements in nanomaterials applied to alternative vehicles. This revision will be based on life cycle assessment and risk analysis. A new numerical procedure is presented to enable a hydrogen-fuelled two-stroke resonating free-piston generator target ideal Otto cycles to provide tracking paths for feedback control to maximise efficiency. Piston trajectories and design parameters are obtained for specified power, compression-ratio, and air-fuel-ratio. These parameters include scavenge port locations, heat release position, equivalent bottom-dead-centre position, and an electrical machine constant which is generally power-switched to take two values within a cycle. The main objectives of the paper are to develop the numerical procedure, and to demonstrate its use in finding a generator with maximum efficiency, and a generator with a single electrical machine constant, avoiding in-cycle power switching. To develop the procedure, a multi-physics generator model provides kinematics to an energy equation, culminating in a novel two-stage procedure. Stage-1 involves iteration and minimisation; Stage-2 just involves minimisation. Testing by simulation involves a 14-kW generator case study with compression ratio of 9, lean air-fuel equivalence ratio of 0.4, plus friction and electrical machine losses. An overall maximum generator efficiency of 54.9% is obtained using the procedure, compared to 51.3% without power switching. Computationally, the two-stage procedure proves highly efficient, typically taking around 11 min in total to complete on a desktop computer. This paper presents a novel off-grid hybrid renewable energy system integrated with hydrogen production and retired electric vehicle (EV) batteries for combined power and heat supply to a small rural community. The system consists of photovoltaic (PV) panels, evacuated tube solar collectors, a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), an alkaline electrolyzer, compressed hydrogen storage tanks, and reused lithium-ion batteries from EVs. A new battery model is developed in the Transient System Simulation Program (TRNSYS) to capture the capacity degradation of retired batteries. A two-stage energy management strategy is proposed to regulate power flow and maximize solar energy utilization. The system is optimized for minimum power supply disruption, hot water supply disruption, energy waste, and annualized costs over a 20-year lifetime using a multi-objective NSGA-II algorithm coupling MATLAB and TRNSYS. Optimization results reveal tradeoffs between the competing objectives. Dynamic simulations show the water tank temperature fluctuates between 20 and 100 °C with mean values dropping slightly in later years due to battery degradation. Energy waste from components rises in later years for the same reason. The replacement interval for a retired EV battery module is around 2.5 years. The design and optimization of the flow field structure significantly impact the performance of the proton exchange membrane electrolyzer. However, the pumping power should be added to the flow field selection criteria system in the flow field evaluation criteria of the electrolyzer. This paper first establishes and experimentally verifies a three-dimensional, two-phase, steady-state, non-isothermal proton exchange membrane electrolyzer model. Secondly, a new type of combined flow field structure is proposed by combining the cross-finger flow field, serpentine flow field, and cross-flow field and compared with the traditional flow field in many aspects. Finally, an evaluation index (current density-pressure ratio) considering pumping power is proposed. The results show that the current density of the combined flow field is 7.6% higher than that of the serpentine flow field, 13.0% higher than that of the cross-finger flow field, 13.7% higher than that of the double-serpentine flow field, and 29.4% higher than that of the parallel flow field when the voltage is 2.0 V. The combined flow field has the optimal performance, increasing the reaction rate and improving the gas discharge efficiency. In addition, the combined flow field has the best current density-pressure ratio. This means the combined flow field has lower energy consumption than the conventional one under the same performance conditions. Decentralized offshore wind power to hydrogen production is one of the potential solutions for wind energy utilization in deep sea area, of which the electrolysis is integrated with the wind turbine, so that how to gather and transport the produced hydrogen from the decentralized wind turbines to the processing terminals becomes very crucial. This paper focuses on this topic and proposes a mixed-integer linear programming model to optimize the layout of the "ship+pipe" transmission system, aiming at minimizing the average annual total cost. Through the model, the locations and sizes of hydrogen gathering platforms, their allocations with wind turbines, the shipping routes could all be figured out. Two aspects of contributions are made in this work. This paper aims to study the feasibility of municipal sewage sludge utilization as an energy source in a polygeneration system. This system offers distinctive benefits such as contribution to the principled removal of sewage sludge, simultaneous utilization of raw and digested sludge in different parts of the system, and production of renewable hydrogen from bio-waste. 4E (energy, exergy, exergoeconomic, and environmental) analyses, are performed to understand the system performance comprehensively. Then, parametric studies are examined the impact of changing the values of main parameters on the system operation. Afterward, a multi-objective optimization based on a genetic algorithm is carried out to achieve optimal values, considering a trade-off between the exergy efficiency and the total cost rate. Meanwhile, this work harnesses the potential of artificial neural networks to expedite complex and time-consuming optimization processes. According to the results, the gasifier exhibits the highest rate of exergy destruction, and the primary cost of consumption is attributed to its heat supply. The multi-objective optimization findings show that the optimum point has an exergy efficiency of 38.26 % and a total cost rate of 58.17 M$/year. The hydrogen production rate, energy efficiency, and net power generation rate for the optimal case are determined as 1692 kg/h, 35.24 %, and 4269 kW, respectively. Also, the unit cost of hydrogen in the optimal case is obtained 1.49 $/kg which offers a cost-effective solution for hydrogen production. Improving the commercial fuel cell system efficiency is critical to reducing hydrogen consumption and improving the operational economy. This paper studies the power consumption pattern of the air supply subsystem, the most power-consuming auxiliary components, aiming to improve the system's efficiency. A method was proposed to get the extremum of the system net power by optimizing the oxygen excess ratio and cathode pressure. Mathematical models describing the fuel cell stack and air supply subsystem power characteristics were developed based on the mechanism analysis and estimation of unknown parameters. Then, a system net power model for energy efficiency optimization was developed. The operating conditions for optimal efficiency at a specific current density can be obtained by numerical calculation. To verify the method's effectiveness, a series of experiments were conducted, and the results show that the proposed method can maximize system net power output at various current density conditions. The hydrogen isotopes are vital due to their significant applications in scientific research, biomedicine and potential application in fusion energy. D-T fusion, in particular, holds the promise solving human fossil energy reliance and the resulting environmental pollution. Methods including cryogenic distillation and Girdler Sulfide process etc. have been developed to satisfy the demand towards pure D 2 and T 2 but generally suffer high energy consumption and low separation efficiency. Furthermore, emerging methods such as laser catalysis and quantum sieving have been demonstrated but suffers harsh separation conditions, low separation volumes and material life etc. Thermal cycling absorption process (TCAP) delivers seductive aspects regarding hydrogen isotope separation for efficiency and throughput, small footprint and high automation level. Herein, firstly, the advantages and disadvantages of various separation methods are briefly elucidated and provides the necessities for developing new separation methods. Then the preferred TCAP strategy is outlined in detail, containing working mechanisms and optimization process. Finally, the history and outlook of TCAP are listed. In this paper, a novel ammonia-hydrogen-electricity cogeneration system is developed. To mitigate the cost associated with hydrogen storage and transportation in later stages, the proposal is to utilize high-temperature ammonia production instead of conventional hydrogen production. A comparative analysis between ammonia and transportation for hydrogen is conducted to assess cost efficiencies. To improve the system efficiency, a supercritical CO 2 Brayton cycle is applied as the power generation cycle. This choice exhibits superior parameter compatibility with the system compared to the Rankine cycle. The study scrutinizes the impacts of different energy utilization sequences and varying process parameters of the power generation cycle on the system's performance to ascertain the most optimal configuration. The results indicate that the Brayton cycle is more suitable for integration with the nuclear-IS thermochemical hydrogen production system, significantly enhancing the power generation capacity of the ammonia-hydrogen-electricity cogeneration system. These improvements result in 18.8 % increase in power generation efficiency and a 9.3 % boost in overall energy efficiency of the system. Subsequent to this enhancement, the system attains an impressive energy efficiency of 47.0 % along with a system exergy efficiency of 63.4 %. The energy consumption of conventional 70-MPa hydrogen refueling stations (HRS) with liquid hydrogen (LH 2) pumps remains at a high level due to the low efficiency of LH 2 pumps working at extremely high pressures, up to nearly 90 MPa. This paper presents a novel HRS with significantly lower energy consumption, based on a step-by-step compression strategy enabled by a highly-efficient 50-MPa LH 2 pump for low-pressure compression and a subsequent thermal compression module for high-pressure compression driven by thermal energy. The performance of the cryogenic pressure vessels in the HRS process is analyzed via a numerical model, and then several improvements to the HRS process are proposed for large-scale refueling requirements. Finally, the techno-economic performance of the HRS is compared with the conventional HRSs and the HRS with pure thermal compression. Compared to the conventional HRSs with 90-MPa LH 2 pumps, the capital cost of the proposed 400-kg/day HRS is reduced to $1.52M from $1.80M, while its energy consumption is reduced to 0.3 kWh/kg H2 from 1.3 kWh/kg H2. This work provides a new solution for low-energy-consumption hydrogen refueling which would be beneficial for reducing the overall cost of the hydrogen supply chain. Neural Networks (NNs) can be used for energy management of hybrid vehicles, but they are hard to tune in inference to adapt to different driving conditions. To make the NN-based energy management strategy more flexible, this paper proposes a controllable NN for optimal energy management of fuel cell hybrid electric vehicles. Inspired by the equivalent factor in the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS), we introduce an adjustable target variable for the final state as an input to the NN-based strategy. During training, classification and regression networks with single-step and multi-step inputs are considered. An efficient shooting method and an adaptive method are then introduced to realize the precise control of the final state and online parameter adaptation. Simulations of the proposed method and the benchmarking method are carried out in different battery discharge modes. This paper examines the complex relationship between the role of H 2 , carbon emissions and their impact on global warming and the economy. Despite improvements in energy efficiency, fossil fuel consumption continues to increase. CO 2 from industrial activities at high temperatures, such as cement, iron, steel and glass production, have increased rapidly, resulting in an increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. These emissions accelerate climate change, leading to dangerous consequences such as increasing average atmospheric temperature and decreasing agricultural productivity. To combat this, it is advocated to reduce CO 2 emissions by using renewable energy sources such as hydroelectricity, biomass, wind solar energy. Current study also discusses carbon reduction methods, including oxy-fuel combustion capture, pre-combustion capture, and post-combustion capture. Despite their unique advantages and disadvantages, these methods play an important role in reducing CO 2 emissions from power plants. Additionally, the article highlights the importance of H 2 as a cornerstone in the development of synthetic fuels and future energy systems. The present paper briefly elaborates upon the combination of waste palm and waste sunflower oil methyl ester as post-mixed biodiesel blends being injected into a four-stroke compression ignition engine, which is also fueled with inducted bamboo leaf generated producer gas (BLP.gas) that includes gaseous components of CO (carbon monoxide), H 2 (hydrogen), CH 4 (methane), and C x H y (hydrocarbons). The objective of the present research is to evaluate the overall performance, emission, and combustion behavior of a Kirloskar TAF1 modified dual-fuel diesel engine fueled with induced bamboo leaf-derived gaseous fuel at a fixed mass flow rate of 21.69 kg/h and injected mixed biodiesel-diesel blends. Initially, diesel fuel and post-mixed methyl ester were examined in dual-fuel mode with a fixed gas flow rate for different loads. It can be seen from the analysis that brake thermal efficiency got reduced by 4.66% and brake-specific fuel consumption increased by 5.26% for PMOME20 (20% post-mixed oil methyl ester + 80% diesel fuel) + BLP. gas with respect to diesel fuel at extreme loading conditions. Moreover, smoke opacity, carbon monoxide, and unburnt hydrocarbons were reduced by 11.22%, 20.44%, and 10.36%, respectively. On the other hand, oxides of nitrogen were reduced by 19.17% at maximum load for PMOME20 + BLP. gas in dual-fuel operation in contrast to that of petroleum diesel. Regional integrated energy systems (RIES) can economically and efficiently use regional renewable energy resources, of which energy storage is an important means to solve the uncertainty of renewable energy output, but traditional electrochemical energy storage is only single electrical energy storage, and the energy efficiency level is low. Hydrogen energy storage has the advantages of large energy storage capacity, long storage time, clean and pollution-free, and can realize the synergistic and efficient utilization of electricity and thermal power. Based on this, this paper proposes a synergistic planning method for an integrated energy system with hydrogen storage taking into account the coupled use of electric-thermal energy, which effectively reduces the system carbon emission and improves the comprehensive energy efficiency level. Firstly, this paper constructs an electric-thermal coupling model of the hydrogen energy storage unit and proposes an optimization strategy for the integrated energy system containing hydrogen storage taking into account the utilization of electricity and thermal power. Secondly, a planning optimization model with the lowest economy and carbon emission and the highest comprehensive energy efficiency was constructed. Third, the CSPO-GE optimization algorithm is proposed for solving the problem, which significantly improves the solution efficiency. Finally, a planning optimization simulation of RIES for a residential community W in northern China verifies the effectiveness of the model and method proposed in this paper. Considering the escalating global warming and its severe consequences, the exploitation of hydrogen, an eco-friendly energy carrier, is gaining great interest. This paper comprehensively reviews the most common hydrogen production, storage, transportation and utilization processes, while their effectiveness is explored from energy, water, economic and environmental perspectives. Their main characteristics, advantages, shortcomings and challenges are discussed as well. The research reveals that the hydrogen's water footprint, energy consumption, carbon emissions, and cost vary significantly depending on the specific technologies used throughout its life cycle, from production to end use. For instance, fossil fuel-based hydrogen production methods, such as steam methane reforming, offer elevated energy performance and cost-effectiveness, but have a significant carbon footprint. In contrast, water electrolysis is environmentally friendly, but requires more water and has lower energy efficiency. Besides, high-pressure containers are the preferred method for hydrogen storage, while liquid and solid storages are better suited for high-energy-density applications. Regarding hydrogen transportation, pipelines are effective over long distances, whereas tankers are convenient for short distances. Furthermore, fuel cells are more energy, carbon and water efficient when using hydrogen as fuel, but they are generally more expensive than internal combustion engines. In this paper, an integrated system is proposed for the production of turquoise hydrogen from methane cracking using solar energy. The produced hydrogen and carbon by-products are used in fuel cells to generate clean electricity. Syngas is produced through power generated via photovoltaics, using a solid oxide electrolyzer cell (SOEC). The SOEC co-electrolyzes the exhaust CO 2 from the direct carbon fuel cell, along with H 2 O. The resulting syngas is subsequently converted into methanol. The system is modelled using Aspen Plus to obtain the thermodynamic evaluation. Mass, energy, entropy, and exergy balances are performed over the system's units. The energy and exergy efficiency of the subsystems is determined, with solar methane cracking system achieving energy and exergy efficiencies of 82.2% and 92.5%, respectively. Financing, sizing, operating, or upgrading a hydrogen refueling station (HRS) is challenging and may be complex, much more so in today's rapidly changing and growing hydrogen industry. There is a significant information gap regarding experimental hydrogen station activities. A high-level perspective on such data and information may facilitate the transition between present and future HRS operations. To address the need for such high-level perspective, this paper presents a comprehensive data set on the performance of the California State University Los Angeles Hydrogen Research and Fueling Facility, based on multi-year operational data. The analysis of over 4500 refueling events and over 8800 kg of hydrogen dispensed, as well as the operation of the facility electrolyzer and of both storage and refueling compressors from 2016 to 2020, reveals a comprehensive picture of HRS energy performance and the identification of useful key performance indicators. In 2016, the station's energy efficiency was 25%, but in 2017 and the first three quarters of 2018, it dropped to 15%. Station-specific energy consumption increased during these quarters. The 2020 first quarter energy consumption was between 70 and 80 kWh/kg. At this time, the energy efficiency of the station reached 40%. Large-scale hydrogen production through water electrolysis is recognized as a promising way to promote the utilization of renewable energy. However, the integration of massive electrolyzers will lead to low computational efficiency in their scheduling problem, thus an aggregation modeling method for electrolyzer clusters is urgently needed. In this paper, a refined operation model of alkaline water electrolyzers is established to accurately describe their operation characteristics. Moreover, to solve 'the curse of dimensionality' in their large-scale applications, an approximated aggregated model for electrolyzer clusters which can improve the computational efficiency is proposed. The proposed model is incorporated into the optimal scheduling of power systems, and its effectiveness is validated via numerical experiments on the modified IEEE 118-bus test system. The paper presents a critical analysis of a commercial pre-feasibility study for hydrogen generation from sewage sludge generated in a wastewater treatment plant sized Population Equivalent (PE) = 160,000 Three commercial offers based on hydrothermal carbonization, gasification/plasma gasification and gas separation, are analysed and validated in terms of chemical reactions and energy balance. The obtained hydrogen yield equals 10 kg H 2 /Mg sludge for Technology#2 and 5.5 kg H 2 /Mg sludge for Technology#3, while the process efficiency equals 31.4% and 41.2%, respectively. The transition to a low-carbon energy system can be depicted as a "great reconfiguration" from a socio-technical perspective that carries the risk of impact shifts. Electrification with the objective of achieving rapidly deep decarbonisation must be accompanied by effective efficiency and flexibility measures. Hydrogen can be a preferred option in the decarbonisation process where electrification of end-uses is difficult or impractical as well as for long-term storage in energy infrastructure characterised by a large penetration of renewable energy sources. Notwithstanding the current uncertainties regarding costs, environmental impact and the inherent difficulties of increasing rapidly supply capacity, hydrogen can represent a solution to be used in multi-energy systems with combined heat and power (CHP), in particular in urban energy districts. In fact, while achieving carbon savings with natural gas fuelled CHP is not possible when low grid carbon intensity factors are present, it may still be possible to use it to provide flexibility services and to reduce emissions further with switch from natural gas to hydrogen. The increasing demand for green hydrogen and power production necessitates the development of novel and upgraded power generation technologies. The solid oxide fuel cell combined heat and power (SOFC–CHP) system is a promising solution due to its high efficiency, clean operation, and fuel flexibility. In practical terms, SOFCs can operate using a variety of fuels such as alcoholic fuel, hydrogen, ammonia, etc. Recently, methanol and ammonia have become noteworthy alternative fuel options as it possesses advantages such as low transportation cost and high hydrogen storage capacity. In this paper, we have established two SOFC–CHP models fueled by methanol or ammonia integrated with the steam Rankine cycle. A comprehensive thermodynamic model is proposed for energy and exergy analyses. Sensitivity analysis is performed to study the system's characteristics. The results show that the SOFC–CHP system fueled by ammonia exhibits superior performance, the maximum electrical power, efficiency, and exergy efficiency is 430W, 7% and 10% greater than the methanol fueled system. The operating temperature is about 30K higher in methanol supplied system. The largest thermal power difference can reach 0.65 kW. Overall, the ammonia fueled SOFC–CHP system shows greater potential than that fueled by methanol. The hybrid combination of hydrogen fuel cells (FCs) and batteries has emerged as a promising solution for efficient and eco-friendly power supply in maritime applications. Yet, ensuring high-quality and cost-effective energy supply presents challenges. Addressing these goals requires effective coordination among multiple FC stacks, batteries, and cold-ironing. Although there has been previous work focusing it, the unique maritime load characteristics, variable cruise plans, and diverse fuel cell system architectures introduce additional complexities and therefore worth to be further studied. Motivated by it, a two-layer energy management system (EMS) is presented in this paper to enhance shipping fuel efficiency. The first layer of the EMS, executed offline, optimizes day-ahead power generation plans based on the vessel's next-day cruises. To further enhance the EMS's effectiveness in dynamic real-time situations, the second layer, conducted online, dynamically adjusts power splitting decisions based on the output from the first layer and instantaneous load information. This dual-layer approach optimally exploits the maritime environment and the fuel cell features. The presented method provides valuable utility in the development of control strategies for hybrid powertrains, thereby enabling the optimization of power generation plans and dynamic adjustment of power splitting decisions in response to load variations. In this paper, wind resource availability was determined by analyzing the meteorological wind energy potential at the hub height of wind turbines. The wind resource potential was identified in specific geographic locations. Technical factors, such as siting requirements and resource availability, were taken into account in the investigation. The economic potential was calculated for each area of Algeria, considering overall losses. Subsequently, the potential for reducing fossil fuel usage was determined through wind to hydrogen estimation. The main components utilized in this work were a Vestas-90 wind turbine (V90–2.0 MW) and an alkaline electrolyzer. The analysis employed a Geographical Information System (GIS) tool. The results demonstrate Algeria's significant potential for wind to hydrogen production, estimated at 1.093 Gt/year without constraints, and reduced to 1.066 Gt/year when considering constraints. The levelized cost of wind to hydrogen production in Algeria varies between 1.51 and 15.37 US $/kg, depending on the chosen wind turbine. The wind to hydrogen production potential identified has the capacity to replace the entire current fossil fuel consumption in the transportation sector, which amounts to 5.28 Mt H 2 /year. The utilization of wind to hydrogen in the transport sector results in a significant reduction of CO 2 emissions, with a calculated avoidance of 45.69 Mt compared to the use of gasoline and diesel. The All-electric ship (AES) concept has revolutionized the maritime sector. Indeed, AES is a promising solution for modern vessels where decreasing emission pollution, suppressing fossil fuel consumption, and making economical operation are its brilliant merits. Fuel cell (FC) technology based on clean hydrogen energy sources can play a significant role in meeting these requirements in the AES platform. Because of the slow transient response of the FC, an energy storage system (ESS) is required to improve AES performance in different operation scenarios. Therefore, optimal sizing of the FC and the ESS and proper design of energy management strategy is a challenging problem. This paper proposes a systematic approach for the optimal design of hybrid FC-ESS of AES power systems. The proposed method is based on an optimization technique to determine the optimal sizing of the FCs and the ESS. Capital investment, fuel consumption, personnel electrical safety, and occupied volume of the AES power system are the main objectives. The FC size, the battery size, the scheduled output power of the FC, and the battery are the decision variables. Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used to solve the optimization problem. To validate the numerical results, the optimization problem is also solved by Mayfly Algorithm (MA) separately. To assess the feasibility of the proposed strategy, the optimal design of hybrid FC-ESS for a vessel is implemented based on the proposed method. The simulation results validate the proposed approach's sufficiency to investigate and optimize the economic, safety, and dimensional aspects of designing the FC ship's IPS. Numerical results are reported for each design aspect. Considering the minor differences of the numerical results obtained by GA and MA, the optimum points are validated by the two techniques. Using the obtained results, various perceptions can be derived from the FC ship's IPS design. This paper presents a framework for the efficient design and evaluation of a standalone hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) to meet the energy requirements of a rural community in the north-eastern region of Nigeria. The proposed microgrid system incorporates solar photovoltaic, wind turbines, biomass gasifier, fuel cell, and Battery storage. The sizing of each component is determined through the utilization of real local meteorological data and the load demand over a year, employing the Levy flight-salp swarm algorithms (LF-SSA). The optimization objective is to minimize the annualized system cost (ASC) of the HRES, while also considering the reliability constraint of Loss of power supply probability (LPSP). The comparative outcomes demonstrate that the LF-SSA surpasses other examined algorithms, namely the salp swarm, genetic algorithm, and HOMER software by achieving substantial cost savings of $29033, $50796, $191771 respectively in relation to the proposed HRES. The result further shows that, the LF-SSA provides the lowest LCOE of $0.933162/kWh, in contrast to SSA at $0.947737/kWh, GA at $0.958660/kWh, and HOMER at $1.075351/kWh. Green Hydrogen (GH) is increasingly recognized as a viable solution in the United States (US) for meeting energy demands, achieving net zero emissions by 2050, and mitigating the intermittent nature of renewable sources such as wind and solar. This review paper identifies and examines three crucial research areas concerning GH. Despite significant federal, state, and business investment in the development of hydrogen technology, numerous questions have remained unanswered including economic viability, social acceptance, and policies and regulations. In comparison to the US, Europe, and Asia have taken a lead role in studying the social and regulatory aspects of GH. The study shows limited focus on social acceptance, and the absence of dedicated policies and regulations for hydrogen. The US lacks coordinated policies for GH and is blended with natural gas. The literature shows that the relationship between economics, social sciences, and policies and regulations are intrinsic. The success of GH in the US will require massive investments, public and private collaboration, research on social sciences, and regulatory support. The hydrogen and oxygen bubbles covering the electrode surface will reduce the reaction rate of water electrolysis and increase energy consumption. Adding ultrasonic to the electrolytic cell can improve the escape velocity of bubbles on the electrode surface by oscillation and cavitation effect. In this paper, the effects of ultrasound on the performance of water electrolysis under different working conditions are studied by experiment and numerical simulation. Firstly, the polarization curves and bubble flow patterns under different positions of the ultrasonic vibrator and electrode were obtained through experiments. And then, the flow model of the electrolytic cell with ultrasonic is constructed, which considers the mass transfer between the gas and liquid phases and the acoustic flow phenomenon caused by cavitation. The results revealed that, due to the reflection of the wall and the transmission process of the ultrasonic in the electrolyte, the electrode position has a significant impact on the current density when the ultrasonic vibrator is located on the right side of the electrolytic cell, which can be increased by 2.40%–22.70% at different electrode positions compared with that without ultrasound. The influence of operating parameters on the flow field inside the electrolyzer was obtained through numerical simulation. As a result, appropriate loading methods and operating conditions can maximize the effectiveness of ultrasound. Proton exchange membrane electrolysis cells (PEMEC) can be utilized to produce hydrogen using renewable energy. In this paper, photovoltaic (PV) integrated with PEMEC is developed for hydrogen production. Based on the operation characteristics of PV and PEMEC, two operation strategies (Strategy 1 and Strategy 2) are proposed to regulate membrane temperature lower than 353.15 K under different solar irradiations. For Strategy 1, the water flow rate is firstly increased and then the inlet water temperature is reduced in the morning with increasing irradiation; and only increasing the inlet water temperature in the afternoon. While for Strategy 2, only reducing the inlet water temperature is adopted in the morning, and increasing the inlet water temperature in the afternoon. Results show that Strategy 1 outperforms Strategy 2 in terms of higher energy efficiency of 5.38% and exergy efficiency of 5.46%. Cryogenic supercritical hydrogen storage technology is a high-density physical hydrogen storage method, which is a highly promising hydrogen storage approach. However, existing research has mainly focused on the development of storage devices for cryogenic supercritical hydrogen, with limited research on the cooling process of supercritical hydrogen. Therefore, a novel cooling process for cryogenic supercritical hydrogen production based on helium expansion cycle with liquid nitrogen (LN 2) pre-cooling is proposed in this paper. In this process, after being compressed and cooled in multiple stages, the feed hydrogen is pre-cooled by LN 2. Then, cryogenic supercritical hydrogen (10 MPa, −235.15 °C, 63.36 g/L) is obtained by helium multi-stage expansion refrigeration. The process is simulated by Aspen HYSYS and optimized by genetic algorithm (GA) to obtain lower specific energy consumption (SEC). Thermodynamic analyses are conducted to evaluate the process. And compared with the conventional hydrogen liquefaction process, the results show that the proposed process is reasonable and superior. The SEC 0 , figure of merit (FOM), and the total exergy loss of the system are 5.432 kWh/kg H2 , 43.88%, and 289.69 kW respectively. Optimal energy management of microgrids enables efficient integration of renewable energies by considering all system flexibilities. For systems with significant seasonal imbalance between energy production and demand, it may be necessary to integrate seasonal storage in order to achieve fully decarbonized operation. This paper develops a novel model predictive control strategy for a renewable microgrid with seasonal hydrogen storage. The strategy relies on data-based prediction of the energy production and consumption of an industrial power plant and finds optimized energy flows using a digital twin optimizer. To enable seasonal operation, incentives for long-term energy shifts are provided by assigning a cost value to the storage charge and adding it to the optimization target function. A hybrid control scheme based on rule-based heuristics compensates for imperfect predictions. With rapid industrialization, rising fossil fuel consumption, and environmental concerns, developing clean and green energy is an inescapable option. Hydrogen has emerged as a significant potential energy carrier and a viable future replacement fuel for fossil fuels due to its renewable and pollution-free properties. Previous review papers have significantly contributed to the body of literature on the various technologies for producing hydrogen by revealing key insights into their working principles and conditions, as well as the economic and environmental aspects. In addition, they also highlighted the potential pathways to enable the application of these technologies in the context of carbon neutrality. However, these studies have not broken down the evolutionary patterns and developmental progress of either fossil fuel-based or renewable energy-based technologies used to produce hydrogen. In addition, the currently available literature does not contain the most recent research that focuses on the evolution and life cycle of each technology category from a chronological point of view. The key drivers, countries/regions, and their contributions to the field's development have received little attention. As a result, it is critical to monitor technological advances in hydrogen energy production and investigate the key enablers of these advancements. Against this backdrop, the current study employs patent analysis tools to achieve four primary goals: (1) to track the development trends in the field of hydrogen production from 2000 to 2019; (2) to identify and compare the recent development trends in the last five years according to the feedstock, i.e., fossil fuel, water, and biomass-based technologies; (3) to predict the technology life cycle of the two main groups of hydrogen production technologies (fossil and renewable); (4) to identify and compare the key drivers of hydrogen production technologies from a statistical standpoint. The safety of energy infrastructure is currently attracting more and more attention. Once accidents happened or improper incident handling, uncontrolled release of huge energy will lead catastrophic consequences. The manuscript takes the hydrogen refueling station as a typical representative of the energy infrastructure. Once the hydrogen in hydrogen refueling stations (HRSs) leaks, it easily forms a combustible cloud and can explode by encountering a heat source. At such a time, effective emergency management can prevent and reduce the impact of accidents. In this paper, the "scene-task-ability" scenario construction method is first applied to HRS leakage and explosive accidents and used to illustrate the risk evolution process during the different stages of an accident. This method separates the emergency tasks of various emergency responders and evaluates their emergency response ability. The values of prevention, preparation, response and recovery are coupled using the time-ordered weighted averaging and time-ordered weighted geometric averaging hybrid operator, in order to derive a systematic and comprehensive evaluation of the safe emergency management of HRSs. World's energy demand is majorly met by fossil fuels. An increase in the demand for energy and the depletion of fossil fuels leads to look for the alternate source of energy. Hydrogen is one of the most viable alternate sources of alternate energy. This paper presents the performance study of a Compression Ignition engine using a fuel combination of diesel and hydrogen-diesel. The performance parameters have been analyzed with two input factors, load and Compression Ratio and three output responses, Brake Thermal efficiency (BTE), Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) and Volumetric efficiency. The experimental results indicate the improvement in BTE, reduction in BSFC and volumetric efficiency. The BTE was improved by 6.38%, BSFC was reduced by 4.87% and Volumetric efficiency got reduced by 1.89% when hydrogen-diesel fuel is used in place of neat diesel. The experiments have been designed with the help of Design Expert® 13.0.5 using Response Surface Method. The experiments are conducted using Optimal (Custom) design. Mathematical relations are developed between the process parameters and the input factors using regression analysis. The optimal solution has been obtained using the desirability approach.
