Abstract

Paraphrasing is one of the core practices associated with active listening. While its use is widely advocated, research on its efficacy shows limited results. Paraphrasing-like actions have been studied extensively in conversation analytic research under the term formulations. Building on that tradition, this article features a conversation analysis of the affective stance that paraphrasing turns display toward their referents. Primary data drawn from a podcast series, Conversations with People Who Hate Me, are supplemented with instances drawn from mediation and a medical interview. Affiliative paraphrases feature components such as positive assessments, empathy displays, and shared laughter. Neutral paraphrases withhold markers of positive or negative orientation to their referents. Disaffiliative paraphrases restate what was said before in ways that convey skepticism or leave the prior talk vulnerable to criticism. Ambiguous paraphrases may reflect both affiliative and disaffiliative components; responses provide evidence for how recipients orient to their stance. Affiliative and neutral paraphrases may most closely approach the spirit of active listening. 2. A Discursive Approach to Young Adult Romantic Couples Use of Active Listening to Manage Conflict During Natural Everyday Conversations.

Abstract

The present study uses a discursive psychological approach to examine naturally occurring bids at active listening as they arise spontaneously in the everyday interactions between young adult couples. To date, there is scant research examining in microanalytic detail how active listening works as it spontaneously emerges in everyday natural troubles-talk contexts between romantic partners. Five discursive methods for engaging in active listening are identified: 1) the use of psychological attributions, 2) judgmental questions, 3) subtle reframes, 4) story-topping, and 5) minimal recycles. The findings reveal that active listening is less about simply reflecting what one is hearing in neutral, open, and/or nonjudgmental ways, but is mostly about managing accountability, blame/attribution, identities, and perceived relational symmetries and asymmetries. The findings offer a new and exciting perspective for researchers interested in understanding how active listening spontaneously emerges and how couples use it in everyday natural relational contexts. Abstract

The term culturally cognizant listening is introduced as nonjudgmental, active listening style taught with self-reflection and perspective-taking behaviors using a service-learning pedagogy. Given the climate of societal discord on topics of diversity, there is an increased need to enhance listening skills. The purposes of this thematic analysis are to describe the concept of culturally cognizant listening using the analogies of mirrors (self-awareness) and windows (nonjudgment perspective taking) and examine its effectiveness. Data from a convenience sample of 47 undergraduates representing three cohorts enrolled in a listening course are presented. Overall, students learned the culturally cognizant listening style based on service-learning using the analogies of mirrors and windows. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

4. Do Moral Communicators Make Better Listeners? Personality, Virtue and Receiver Apprehension as Predictors of Active Empathetic-Listening.

As personality, apprehension, and personal virtue can influence interpersonal communication, the research question in this project was the degree each play in accounting for active empathetic listening. Participants completed self-report surveys to explore the predictive potential of communicator personality, receiver apprehension, and virtue on active-empathetic listening (AEL). Regression analyses indicated that virtue and receiver apprehension accounted for more variance in AEL than personality factors. Faithfulness – a virtue indicating relational commitment to one's conversational partner – proved the strongest predictor even though self-control, humility, work, and wisdom correlated positively with AEL and most listening stages (sensing, processing, and responding). Discussion explores the role of humility in being 'other-wise,' what constitutes a faithful listener, and the potential of empathic-altruism in one's moral identity as key to understanding listening well. Abstract

This commentary raises questions regarding empathy training as a core objective of foundational skills courses in most U.S. medical schools. While a number of educational activities focused on the cultivation of empathy have been introduced by medical educators, students spend very little time acquiring specific key communication competencies like listening. Medical school faculty have written about the importance of empathy, but have not availed themselves of the research that truly defines empathic listening, nor have they shifted their focus to exactly how these skills can be taught. In the absence of guidance about active listening as a therapeutic micro-skill, it is unlikely that physicians-in-training can consistently produce verbal responses that allow patients to feel that they are heard and understood. Thus, medical students may have communication deficiencies, including the inability to establish meaningful rapport with patients. The predicament is maintained because most physician faculty do not reach back to draw on prior models of interpersonal sensitivity training, nor do they cross disciplinary lines beyond medical school curricula to synthesize lessons from psychology and communication studies. This is problematic, because the development of meaningful relationships with patients has been demonstrated to improve outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

6. Active and Empathic Listening in Social Media: What do Stakeholders Really Expect.

Researchers examined expectations and evaluations of active-empathic listening (AEL) during digital dialogic communication between organizations and customers. Through an experimental design, participants (N= 180) rated responses for social media communication from an organization to hypothetical customer messages. Results indicate individuals expect a high level of AEL from organizations' social media responses, and higher active-empathic responses were rated as more competent. When communicating with an organization via social media, 22.1% stated that the response did not meet expectations versus 76.7% reporting the response met or exceeded expectations. The study seeks to obtain an understanding of managers' perceptions of active listening as a management tool and to explore how they experience their own execution of the phenomenon. Qualitative research was conducted with eight line managers, from eight different organizations, and a thematic analysis was performed. Findings reveal positive attitudes towards active listening as an important management tool. Besides organizational benefit, the managers experienced increased sense of well-being at work. For them, active listening demonstrates respect and focused attention. Fairly good knowledge was indicated in preparing and sensing techniques of the active listening process. This response examines the preceding seven essays in this issue of the International Journal of Listening through the lens provided by the philosophical hermeneutics of Hans-Georg Gadamer, illuminating a question that shapes the identity of each essay. In this response, I have grouped the seven essays together into three sections. The first section, "Listening: Active Attentiveness," explores essays shaping the coordinates of listening. The second section, "Listening: The Architecture of Place," anchors listening in the particularity of place. The final section, "Listening: Imagined Space," ties listening to communicative contexts involving a large and disparate public. The scholars in this volume remind us that active awareness of our own bias and that of others is what allows new insights to emerge. As we listen, we are both situated and responsive to the architecture of place and imaginative spaces, which shape our listening to ourselves and to the Other. Our attentiveness, our sense of place, and our imaginative engagement with the sociality of space move listening from mere acquisition of information to the enlargement of the human condition. Abstract

Recent research focusing on the sources of listening anxiety identified individual and external factors (IEF), listeners’ control over input (LC), and perceived level of task difficulty (PTD) as the main causes of anxiety among L2 listeners. This correlational study aims to explore whether the sources of anxiety in L2 listening have a causal relationship to listeners’ self-efficacy and listening proficiency. Data were gathered from 347 students studying in the preparatory program of English in Turkey through Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLAC), Listening Self-efficacy Scale (LSS), and listening test scores of the students. Structural equation modeling (SEM) technique was conducted for data analysis. Results showed that there were strong negative associations between individual and external factors causing anxiety and self-efficacy while there were moderate level, negative associations between the perceived level of task difficulty and self-efficacy in L2 listening. Our work further proved that the listeners’ control over input was positively and moderately related to the levels of listeners’ self-efficacy, which was positively and strongly correlated with proficiency in L2 listening. © 2020, © 2020 International Listening Association.

It is vital to understand the listening problems students face in a foreign language (FL) classroom. In the current study, students were provided with options to identify these problems. Twenty-eight A1 level Turkish secondary school students worked in pairs and had autonomy to control the audio while listening. While dialogic exchanges illustrated articulated listening comprehension problems in a natural and observable way, self-control data enabled the researcher to observe how students chose to operate the input after encountering such difficulties. Students mostly experienced problems related to process, listener, affect, and input, followed by social- and task-related problems. The most frequent problems were mental translation, inability to chunk streams of speech and difficulty keeping pace with the delivery. In terms of self-controlling the input, students operated the audio mainly to check understanding and catch up with the speed of speech.
