Botto’s aestheticism, abundantly emphasized by two of the critics most committed to pointing out the qualities of his poetry, Fernando Pessoa and José Régio, constitutes one of the most relevant aspects of his lyricism and stems from the desire to create beauty through art. To this incessant search for beauty corresponds a constant experience of exile. The purpose of this presentation is to highlight at least three different meanings for both the term “beauty” and the term “exile” invoked in the title. Both can be read in a more abstract sense of an ideal of life, which hovers above the hardships of the real world. Both can be related to the poet’s work, in search of a singular language that effectively expresses his lyrical identity, his worldview and aesthetically identifies his work. And both can be related to the search for an effective space in which a human being seeks to find the necessary conditions for a dignified life, even far from his country of origin. The Portuguese poetess Maria da Cunha (1872-1917) had a troubled life. She married in 1895, published her book of poetry, Trindades, in 1909, with a second edition in 1911, divorced in May 1912 and emigrated to Brazil. Maria da Cunha arrived in Rio de Janeiro on September 16th, after a brief stay in France, accompanied by the journalist Virgínia Quaresma (1882-1973). The poetess then had to live off her own work. She got a job at the Rio newspaper A Época, where she was cultural editor and columnist and where she published some poems until mid-1914. Afterwards, she traveled between Rio and São Paulo, giving conferences and living with the immigrant Portuguese writer Ana de Villalobos Galheto (1863-1944) and with the Brazilian poetess and educator Eunice Caldas (1879-1967), until she died, in São Paulo, on January 1st, 1917. In this article, I present some biographical data about this writer, mainly from her last years, and how Brazil appears in her poetic and chronicle works. I will highlight part of her sociability network and how women are important in her production. I will point out how affection for women appears in her texts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article analyzes the construction of the character Gouveia, in "O Menino do Gouveia", published at 1914, in the pornographic weekly O Rio-nú, a magazine that circulated between the years 1898 and 1916. From the presence of the name/term Gouveia, its origin in an article in the newspaper O paiz, and its representation, we traced the obscene imaginary responsible for creating such a character and its unfoldings that will lead to the production of this narrative. It analyzes the role of the media and the textual representations that become fundamental for the theme of the short story, as well as for its mass circulation and commercialization. Considering the collection Poesia gay brasileira: antologia, from 2017, we study how male homoeroticism is represented in poems written between the 19th and 21st centuries, and if such poems, from this representation, can be analyzed as gay ones. For that, we take into account the notions of homoeroticism and gay literature circumscribed by José Carlos Barcellos (2006). In the work we present, three poems were analyzed and described in more detail: "A um moçoilo" by Junqueira Freire, "Rapto" by Carlos Drummond de Andrade, and "Julieu e Romito" by Horácio Costa, written respectively in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. As a result of this comparative research, it was concluded that the poems of the anthology researched present gay nuances only from the second half of the 20th century on in Brazil.
