Changes of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) under global warming are investigated by using outputs from phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) and a theoretical midlatitude air–sea coupled model. In a warming climate, the decadal variability of the PDO is found to be significantly suppressed, with the amplitude reduced and the decadal cycle shifted toward a higher-frequency band. We used the theoretical model put forward by Goodman and Marshall (herein the GM model) to underpin the potential mechanisms. The GM model exhibits a growing coupled mode that resembles the simulated PDO. It is found that the suppression of the PDO appears to be associated with the acceleration of Rossby waves due to the enhanced oceanic stratification under global warming. This shortens the PDO period and reduces PDO amplitude by limiting the growth time of the coupled mode. The GM model also suggests that the increase of growth rate due to strengthening of oceanic stratification tends to magnify the PDO amplitude, counteracting the Rossby wave effect. Insights from the RAPID–MOCHA observation network in the North Atlantic have motivated a recent focus on the South Atlantic, where water masses are exchanged with neighboring ocean basins. In this study, variability in the South Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (SAMOC) at 34°S is attributed to global atmospheric forcing using an inverse modeling approach. The sensitivity of the SAMOC to atmospheric state variables is computed with the adjoint of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology general circulation model, which is fit to 20 years of observational data in a dynamically consistent framework. The dynamical pathways highlighted by these sensitivity patterns show that the domain of influence for the SAMOC is broad, covering neighboring ocean basins even on short time scales. This result differs from what has previously been shown in the North Atlantic, where Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) variability is largely governed by dynamics confined to that basin. The computed sensitivities are convolved with surface atmospheric state variability from ERA-Interim to attribute the influence of each external forcing variable (e.g., wind stress, precipitation) on the SAMOC from 1992 to 2011. Here, local wind stress perturbations are shown to dominate variability on seasonal time scales while buoyancy forcing plays a minor role, confirming results from past forward perturbation experiments. Interannual variability, however, is shown to have originated from remote locations across the globe, including a nontrivial component originating from the tropical Pacific. The western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) is regarded as the key circulation system that dominates the summer heat waves over eastern China, but whether the WPSH–summer heat wave connection changes with time remains unknown. In this study, decadal variations in the WPSH–heat wave connection were examined for the period 1959–2016 using daily maximum temperature data from 654 observational stations across China and global reanalysis datasets. The results show that the correlation coefficient between the WPSH intensity (WPSHI) and the number of heat-wave days (NHD) was 0.65 (>99% confidence level) during positive phases of the Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO), whereas that during negative phases of the PDO was only 0.12 (<80% confidence level). The remarkable difference in correlations is due to the more westward extension of a stronger WPSH in El Niño decaying summers during the positive phases of PDO. The stronger Indian Ocean warming in El Niño decaying-year summers for PDO positive phases in comparison to PDO negative phases is associated with enhanced convection and heating, which further drive a stronger anticyclone over the northwestern Pacific, leading to a stronger and more westward-extending WPSH, which is favorable for more heat waves over eastern China. An atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) is forced with patterns of observed sea surface tem- perature (SST) change and those output from atmosphere--ocean GCM (AOGCM) climate change simula- tions to demonstrate a strong dependence of climate feedback on the spatial structure of surface temperature change. Cloud and lapse rate feedbacks are found to vary the most, depending strongly on the pattern of tropical Pacific SST change. When warming is focused in the southeast tropical Pacific--a region of clima- tological subsidence and extensivemarine lowcloud cover--warming reduces the lower-tropospheric stability (LTS) and lowcloud cover but is largely trapped under an inversion and hence has little remote effect. The net result is a relatively weak negative lapse rate feedback and a large positive cloud feedback. In contrast, when warming is weak in the southeast tropical Pacific and enhanced in the west tropical Pacific--a strong con- vective region--warming is efficiently transported throughout the free troposphere. The increased atmo- spheric stability results in a strong negative lapse rate feedback and increases the LTS in low cloud regions, resulting in a low cloud feedback of weak magnitude. These mechanisms help explain why climate feedback and sensitivity change on multidecadal time scales in AOGCM abrupt4xCO2 simulations and are different from those seen in AGCM experiments forced with observed historical SST changes. From the physical understanding developed here, one should expect unusually negative radiative feedbacks and low effective climate sensitivities to be diagnosed from real-world variations in radiative fluxes and temperature over decades in which the eastern Pacific has lacked warming. Anomalous rainfall in the tropical Pacific driven by El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is a crucial pathway of ENSO-s global impacts. The changes in ENSO rainfall under global warming vary among the models, even though previous studies have shown that many models project that ENSO rainfall will likely intensify and shift eastward in response to global warming. The present study evaluates the robustness of the changes in ENSO rainfall in 32 CMIP5 models forced under the representative concentration pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario. The robust increase in mean-state moisture dominates the robust intensification of ENSO rainfall. The uncertain amplitude changes in ENSO-related SST variability are the largest source of the uncertainty in ENSO rainfall changes through influencing the amplitude changes in ENSO-driven circulation variability, whereas the structural changes in ENSO SST and ENSO circulation enhancement in the central Pacific are more robust than the amplitude changes. The spatial pattern of the mean-state SST changes-the departure of local SST changes from the tropical mean-with an El Niño-like pattern is a relatively robust factor, although it also contains pronounced intermodel differences. The intermodel spread of historical ENSO circulation is another noteworthy source of the uncertainty in ENSO rainfall changes. The intermodel standard deviation of ENSO rainfall changes increases along with the increase in global-mean surface temperature. However, the robustness of enhanced ENSO rainfall changes in the central-eastern Pacific is almost unchanged, whereas the eastward shift of ENSO rainfall is increasingly robust along with the increase in global-mean surface temperature. El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is one of the most important drivers of climatic variability on the global scale. Much of this variability arises in response to ENSO-driven changes in tropical Pacific rainfall. Previous research has shown that the ENSO-driven tropical Pacific rainfall variability can shift east and intensify in response to global warming, even if ENSO-related SST variability remains unchanged. Here, the twenty-first century changes in ENSO-driven tropical Pacific rainfall variability in 32 CMIP5 models forced under the representative concentration pathway 8.5 (RCP8.5) scenario are examined, revealing that the pattern of changes in ENSO-driven rainfall is not only gradually enhanced but also shifts steadily eastward along with the global-mean temperature increase. Using a recently developed moisture budget decomposition method, it is shown that the projected changes in ENSO-driven rainfall variability in the tropical Pacific can be primarily attributed to a projected increase in both mean-state surface moisture and spatially relative changes in mean-state SST, defined as the departure of local SST changes from the tropical mean. The enhanced moisture increase enlarges the thermodynamic component of ENSO rainfall changes. The enhanced El Niño-like changes in mean-state SST steadily move the dynamic component of changes in ENSO-driven rainfall variability to the central-eastern Pacific, along with increasing global-mean temperature. A hybrid dynamical-statistical model is developed for predicting the accumulated cyclone energy (ACE)-a measure that can synthesize genesis number, mean life span, and intensity of tropical cyclones (TCs)-in the typhoon season (June-October) over the western North Pacific (WNP) using data from both observations and seasonal forecasts of the National Centers for Environmental Prediction's (NCEP's) Climate Forecast System, version 2 (CFSv2). The model is built on the relationships between the observed ACE and the large-scale variables for the period of 1982-2010. Four predictors are selected based on both previous work in the literature and statistical analyses in this study, including vertical zonal wind shear over the equatorial western North Pacific (Ushear), sea surface temperature (SST) gradient (SSTG) between the southwestern Pacific (SWP) and the western Pacific warm pool, Niño-3.4 SST, and SWP SST. Based on the cross validation, the hybrid model is finally constructed with the combination of the summer Niño-3.4 and SWP SST at the 4-to-2-month lead (January-March) and the summer Ushear and the April SSTG at the 1-to-0-month lead (April-May). The hybrid model is shown to be skillful in predicting WNP seasonal ACE starting from January, with the correlation coefficient ranging between 0.58 and 0.81 and the root-mean-square error ranging between 1.26 and 0.91 (scaled by 105 m2 s−2) initiated from January to May. The prediction experiments for 2011-13 using the hybrid dynamical-statistical model showed better skill and longer leads than that using the pure statistical models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The leading mode of boreal winter precipitation variability over the tropical Pacific for the period 1980-2010 shows a west-east dipole pattern with one center over the western North Pacific (WNP) and Maritime Continent and the other center over the equatorial central Pacific (CP). Observational evidence shows that the variability of the East Asian upper-tropospheric subtropical westerly jet (EAJ) has a significant correlation with precipitation anomalies over the WNP and CP and that tropical precipitation anomalies over WNP and CP have a distinct influence on the variation of the EAJ. A series of numerical experiments based on a linear baroclinic model are performed to confirm the influence of the heating anomalies associated with precipitation perturbations over the WNP and CP on the EAJ. The results of numerical experiments indicate that a heat source over the WNP can excite a northward-propagating Rossby wave train in the upper troposphere over East Asia and facilitate a poleward eddy momentum flux. It results in the acceleration of the westerlies between 30° and 45°N, which favors a northward displacement of the EAJ. The response induced by a heat sink over the CP features a zonal easterly band between 25° and 40°N, suggesting that the response to heat sink associated with negative precipitation anomalies over the CP may weaken the EAJ. A strengthened relationship was found between tropical Pacific precipitation and the EAJ since 1979. The modeling results suggest that the shift of mean states might be responsible for the strengthened EAJ-rainfall relationship after 1979. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
