Continuous ground-based observations of ionospheric and magnetospheric regions are critical to the Geospace Environmental Modeling (GEM) program. It is therefore important to establish clear intercalibrations between different ground-based instruments and satellites in order to clearly place the ground-based observations in context with the corresponding in situ satellite measurements. HF-radars operating at high latitudes are capable of observing very large spatial regions of the ionosphere on a nearly continuous basis. In this paper we report on an intercalibration study made using the Polar Anglo-American Conjugate Radar Experiment radars located at Goose Bay, Labrador, and Halley Station, Antarctica, and the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) satellites. The DMSP satellite data are used to provide clear identifications of the ionospheric cusp and the low-latitude boundary layer (LLBL). The radar data for eight cusp events and eight LLBL events have been examined in order to determine a radar signature of these ionospheric regions. This intercalibraion indicates that the cusp is always characterized by wide, complex Doppler power spectra, whereas the LLBL is usually found to have spectra dominated by a single component. The distribution of spectral widths in the cusp is of a generally Gaussian form with a peak at about 220 m/s. The distribution of spectral widths in the LLBL is more like an exponential distribution, with the peak of the distribution occurring at about 50 m/s. There are a few cases in the LLBL where the Doppler power spectra are strikingly similar to those observed in the cusp.

Dayside reconnection, which is particularly effective for a southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), allows magnetosheath particles to enter the magnetosphere where they form the plasma mantle. The motions of the reconnected flux tube produce convective flows in the ionosphere. It is known that the convection patterns in the polar cap are skewed to the dawnside for a positive IMF B(sub y) (or duskside for a negative IMF B(sub y)) in the northern polar cap. Correspondingly, one would expect to find asymmetric distributions of mantle particle precipitation, but previous results have been unclear. In this paper the correlation between B(sub y) and the distribution of mantle particle precipitation is studied for steady IMF conditions with southward IMF. Ion and electron data from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F6 and F7 satellites are used to identify the mantle region and IMP 8 is used as a solar wind monitor to characterize the IMF. We study the local time extension of mantle precipitation in the prenoon and postnoon regions. We find that, in accordance with theoretical expectations for a positive (negative) IMF B(sub y), mantle particle precipitation mainly appears in the prenoon region of the northern (southern) hemisphere. The mantle particle precipitation can extend to as early as 0600 magnetic local time (MLT) in the prenoon region but extends over a smaller local time region in the postnoon sector (we did not find mantle plasma beyond 1600 MLT in our data set although coverage is scant in this area). Magnetometer data from F7 are used to determine whether part of the region 1 current flows on open field lines. We find that at times part of the region 1 sense current extends into the region of mantle particle precipitation, and is therefore on open field lines. In other cases, region 1 currents are absent on open field lines. Most of the observed features can be readily interpreted in terms of the open magnetosphere model.

Observations are described of a substorm field-aligned current (FAC) system traversed by the DMSP F7 spacecraft just after 0300 UT on April 25, 1985. It is shown that the substorm FAC portion of the current system was located equatorward of the boundary between open and closed field lines. The equatorward boundary of the substorm FAC into the magnetotail was mapped using the Tsyganenko (1987) model, showing that the boundary corresponds to 6.9 earth radii. The result is consistent with the suggestion of Akasofu (1972) and Lopez and Lui (1990) that the region of substorm initiation lies relatively close to the earth and the concept that an essential feature of substorms is the disruption and diversion of the near-earth current sheet.

It is demonstrated that there are distinct differences in the electron precipitation patterns (or the polar cap size), geomagnetic activity, and field-aligned currents in the highest-latitude region for small and large IMF B(z) values when the IMF B(z) component is positive. First, during periods of weakly northward IMF, there is a distinct area in the highest-latitude region in which the electron precipitation is absent except for the polar rain. By contrast, during strongly northward IMF, the entire polar region is often filled with burst-type soft electron precipitations. Second, geomagnetic disturbances and field-aligned-current intensities in the highest-latitude region are less during a weak IMF B(z) condition than those during a strongly northward IMF B(z) condition. Geomagnetic activity in the auroral zone for both conditions is absent or very weak.

The significance of acceleration processes in accounting for the energies and temperatures of the electrons seen during periods of intense polar rain is investigated along with the role of the IMF and solar wind in controlling the polar rain. Evidence for an acceleration region is sought by comparing DMSP observations of the precipitating electrons over the polar cap with simultaneous ISEE 1 electron measurements in the conjugate tail lobe at distances between 10 and 22.6 earth radii. The second question is explored by examining the solar wind and IMF conditions during which the intense polar rain events occur. It is found that intense polar rain can pass through the tail lobes without undergoing acceleration between 22.6 earth radii and 800 km altitude.

Auroral displays in the noon sector were examined by using hundreds of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program auroral images, taken over the southern polar region in austral winters, in order to determine the morphology. The auroral displays in the midday part of the auroral oval can be grouped into five characteristic types, depending on the geomagnetic activity and the Bz component of the interplanetary magnetic field. An important characteristic is the clear disconnection in appearance between the noonside and the nightside discrete auroras. Also, there is the lack of correlation between the concurrent nightside substorm activity and midday discrete auroral activity. Thus, the occurrence of bright, discrete auroras in the midday oval may be caused by the local injection of the magnetosheath plasma into the dayside boundary layer. The observed discontinuity of discrete auroras between the dayside and the nightside ovals is consistent with the existence of two separated major injection regions along the auroral oval: the dayside cusp and the nightside plasma sheet.

An energy dispersion feature observed by the ISEE 1 medium energy particle instrument is reported. This feature is characterized by enhancements in both electron and ion fluxes which occur in the 20-200 keV energy range and at radial distances from 5 to 13.5 earth radii. There is a strong energy dependence in the onset times of the enhancements. The time period between the first appearance of an enhancement at high energy to its eventual disappearance in the 20 keV channel can be as much as an hour. The duration of the enhancement in a given energy channel decreases with increasing energy. The species and pitch angle of particles in which the feature is most marked depend on local time. It is shown that the feature is a new manifestation of an old phenomenon, the drift dispersion that frequently produces signatures in particle data from geosynchronous satellites.

The question whether the noon-dusk feature is a manifestation of the spatial structures that should arise from quasi-stationary convection is examined. The key consideration here is whether the energy dispersion of the feature can be explained. It is shown that the observed energy dispersion cannot be attributed to the standard stationary convection configurations, either perturbed or unperturbed. It is also demonstrated, using a detailed computer simulation, that the nighttime, double-spiral-shaped injection boundary (used previously to reproduce the fast changing nighttime features) is successful at reproducing the noon-dusk feature by allowing the particles to evolve for periods of 12 to 36 hours after the injection. It is stressed that the portion of the injection boundary responsible for the feature looks very different from the standard convection boundaries configuration. Conclusions are offered concerning the importance of quasi-stationary convection as the mechanism by which the near geostationary regions are populated.

A simplified analytical procedure is used to characterize the details of geostationary particle signatures, in order to lend support to the 'injection boundary' concept. The signatures are generated by the time-of-flight effects evolving from an initial sharply defined, double spiraled boundary configuration. Complex and highly variable dispersion patterns often observed by geostationary satellites are successfully reproduced through the exclusive use of the most fundamental convection configuration characteristics. Many of the details of the patterns have not been previously presented. It is concluded that most of the dynamical dispersion features can be mapped to the double spiral boundary without further ad hoc assumptions, and that predicted and observed dispersion patterns exhibit symmetries distinct from those associated with the quasi-stationary particle convection patterns.

High resolution magnetic field, thermal plasma, and energetic particle data measured on the IMP 8 spacecraft are used to demonstrate that a thin plasma sheet with rapidly flowing plasma undergoes violent oscillatory motion that causes the entire thickness of the plasma sheet to pass over the spacecraft in times which are sometimes as short as 10 s. Ions with 50 and 290 keV energy are investigated since their gyroradii are comparable to the plasma sheet thickness. As the spacecraft moves from the plasma sheet into the lobe, the energetic particle intensities decrease, but the 290 keV ions are relatively more numerous than 50 keV ions on field lines located deeper in the lobe.

The spatial distribution of energetic particles in the distant magnetotail is analyzed by using identical sets of two complementary energetic particle experiments aboard the IMP 7 and 8 spacecraft. It is noted that the combined IMP 7 and 8 data set provides nearly 10 years of satellite observation. The quantitative distributions of energetic electrons in two energy ranges and energetic protons are given in terms of occurrence frequency and the average particle flux intensity over an 80 earth radii x 70 earth radii plane perpendicular to the sun-earth line. A particle distribution in the shape of an O with a crossbar over the solar magnetospheric YZ plane in the antisolar direction is clearly demonstrated at all energies and for both species. It is pointed out that the O part of the distribution corresponds to the magnetosheath region and that the crossbar is the average plasma sheet configuration. A distinct, species dependent, dawn-dusk asymmetry in particle distribution is observed in the plasma sheet and, to a lesser extent, in the magnetosheath.

Three years of Imp 5 data show that the magnetopause layer of energetic electrons was present during 227 of 230 orbits over this period and extends along the magnetopause from geomagnetic latitudes as low as 40 deg to latitudes corresponding to the polar cap. It also exists at the boundary between the magnetosheath and the polar cusp region. The data show that the integral energy spectrum of these electrons varies greatly with the planetary Kp index and hardens with increasing Kp values. The average spectrum can be represented by a power law. The intensity of the magnetopause layer electrons increases with increasing Kp values and also has a weak dependence on the magnitude of the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field.

The magnetic field line configuration in the geomagnetic tail near 60 earth radii is examined on the basis of nearly 3 years of magnetometer data from the lunar-orbiting Explorer 35 satellite. The magnetotail field line characteristics inside the plasma sheet and in the high-latitude tail, i.e., outside the plasma sheet, are separately examined. In the high-latitude tail the magnetic field lines systematically diverge in both longitudinal (east-west) and latitudinal (north-south) directions; the divergence angle between field lines near the dusk flank and those near the dawn flank is about 14 deg, but the divergence along the Z direction is only about 8 deg. The degree of divergence is found to be greater in the evening side than in the morning side and greater in the northern tail than in the southern tail. Inside the plasma sheet the field lines deviate by about 19 deg from the sun-earth line, and the spatial distribution of the field line deviation does not have any systematic tendency.

Ten weeks of simultaneous fine time resolution data on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), the solar wind parameters observed by the Explorer 33 and Vela 3 satellites, the magnetic field, and the particle fluxes in the magnetotail from the Imp 3 satellite are examined together with auroral zone magnetograms monitoring substorm activity to study the magnetotail variations associated with the latitudinal changes of the IMF. It is found that the magnetotail magnetic field magnitude often increases when the north-south component of the IMF is southward; this increment is generally observed throughout the entire high-latitude tail (outside the plasma sheet). The increment is about 10% of the background field, and it increases to 20% or higher when the north-south component of the IMF increases from the usual 2 or 3 gamma to 7 or 8 gamma.

Protons of 30 to 100 keV are found upstream from the bow shock whenever interplanetary magnetic fields connect the spacecraft and bow shock. The protons do not appear upstream of a boundary determined by the solar wind speed (the speed at which the interplanetary field is being convected) and an effective upstreaming velocity of 2.5 to 3 times the solar wind speed along the field lines. It is believed that (1) the lower-energy (3-4 keV) protons accelerated and reflected by the bow shock and (2) the Alfven waves observed upstream are in some way responsible for the origin of the 30- to 100-keV protons in very large regions upstream from the bow shock.

A detailed study of the plasma flow and the magnetic field vector in the plasma sheet during magnetospheric substorms is made to determine whether plasma flows are field-aligned or crossfield. It is shown that there is generally a large magnetic field-aligned component in the rapid plasma flow observed in the plasma sheet during substorms. In particular, the larger the observed flow speed, the closer the observed flow direction is aligned with the magnetic field line. There is no clear association between the plasma flow direction and the sign of the Bz component of the magnetic field during plasma sheet thinnings at substorms. The rapid plasma flows observed in the magnetotail are predominantly magnetic field-aligned.

On the basis of a study of Imp 6 measurements of plasma flow, it is concluded that there is no clear indication of a predominance of tailward plasma flow beyond about X = -15 R sub E in the midnight sector of the plasma sheet during the expansive phase of a substorm. In fact, it is shown statistically that sunward plasma flow is more frequently observed in the midnight sector within about 30 R sub E from the earth than in any other direction during plasma sheet thinning at the substorm expansion. This result supports the conclusion that there is no definite evidence for the formation of a reconnection neutral line in the near-earth plasma sheet during most substorms.

The purpose of this study is to correlate in detail auroral activity with the corresponding disturbances in the magnetotail. The auroral data were recorded by optical instruments aboard an airplane flying over the Arctic Ocean along the Alaska meridian and by the Alaska meridian chain of all-sky cameras. The corresponding magnetotail observations were made by various instruments on Vela 6A and Imp 5; the interplanetary magnetic field was monitored concurrently by Explorer 35. Three successive substorms were observed on February 17, 1971. Each substorm was readily identified by the classical auroral and magnetic signatures which accompanied its onset. The observed variations of plasma and magnetic field in the magnetotail were consistent with the idea that a neutral line formed in the range X sub SM between -12 and -18 R sub E at the onset of each substorm expansive phase and then moved tailward past X sub SM = -18 R sub E some tens of minutes afterward. The Z component of the tail magnetic field decreased rather steadily for a period of 1-2 1/2 hours after each substorm and until the onset of the next expansive phase, reaching a minimum value just before each onset.

Use of ground-based ionosonde records from midlatitude stations during winter nights to study vertical motions of the F2 layer associated with magnetospheric substorms. The results show that during substorms the F2 layer is lifted upward in the premidnight sector and pushed downward in the postmidnight sector. These motions are interpreted in terms of E x B drifts, the electric field being eastward on the eveningside and westward on the morningside. The results emphasize the importance of substorm effects on the midlatitude F region and the potential of ground-based hf sounding techniques in studying magnetospheric substorms.

Study of variations of the magnetic field and plasma sheet in the distant magnetotail (20 to 40 earth radii) during magnetospheric substorms on the basis of the Imp 3 magnetic-field and particle data. Depending on the locations of the satellite with respect to the boundary of the plasma sheet, the variations differ greatly. However, the present results and the results of other workers give a clear indication of an increase of the magnitude of the field outside the plasma sheet and of the simultaneous ?thinning' of the plasma sheet during an early phase of substorms. At about the maximum epoch or during the recovery phase of substorms, the plasma sheet expands and appears to be inflated to at least the presubstorm level. Furthermore, a large excessive flux of the magnetic (approximately equal to Z component) field, as compared with the flux of the original dipole field, appears across the neutral sheet.

Growth and decay of geomagnetic storms of April 17-18, 1965 studied using data from 88 ground stations, Explorer XXVI and Vela satellites

A cross-correlation study between magnetospheric activity (the AE index) and the southward-directed component of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is made for a total of 792 hours (33 days) with a time resolution of about 5.5 min. The peak correlation tends to occur when the interplanetary data are shifted approximately 40 min later with respect to the AE index data. Cross-correlation analysis is conducted on some idealized wave forms to illustrate that this delay between southward turning of the IMF and the AE index should not be interpreted as being the duration of the growth phase.

The two-dimensional (YZ plane) spatial distribution of magnetic field magnitudes in the geomagnetic tail at the lunar distance is given in both the solar magnetospheric and the neutral-sheet coordinate systems by using three years of data from the Ames magnetometer on Explorer 35. The effect of changes in geomagnetic activity is also presented. In the magnetotail near 60 earth radii, a broad region in which the magnetic field intensity is relatively weak in comparison with that in the other region of the tail is located adjacent to the solar magnetospheric equatorial plane and the calculated neutral sheet. This depression of the field due to the diamagnetic effect of the plasma sheet is more evident during times of minimum geomagnetic activity.

Nearly three years of Ames magnetometer data from Explorer 35 are used to establish plasma-sheet configurations in the geomagnetic tail at the lunar orbit. The plasma sheet is defined either as a region with different field orientations from normal magnetic-field directions in the tail, or as a region where the magnetic field variance is greater than elsewhere in the tail. The plasma-sheet configuration at the lunar orbit derived in this manner is found to be similar to the distribution at 18 earth radii observed by Vela satellites. The seasonal dependence and variations with geomagnetic activity are also presented.
