Abstract The objective of this study was to investigate the bioavailability of heavy metals from atmospheric deposition on the soil-pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) system near a smelter. Soil reciprocal translocation experiment was conducted with seven groups of pot culture (filled with soils of gradient levels of heavy metals) in three sites of gradient atmospheric heavy metal depositions. Results showed that the newly deposited heavy metals (Cu and Cd) were preferential retention in topsoil (0–4 cm) and presented as higher bioavailable fractions compared to those in original soils. Atmospheric depositions contributed to 20–85% of shoot Cu and Cd in high deposition site, which were likely resulted not only from the direct transfer of contaminants from atmosphere to foliar but also from the atmosphere-soil-root transfer. However, the 52–62% of Pb in shoot from atmospheric depositions was mainly resulted from foliar direct uptake. The increasing atmospheric heavy metal depositions significantly decreased the photosynthetic parameters of pakchoi. Additionally, the potential health risks associated with the consumption of pakchoi were elevated in high deposition site and the bioaccessibility values were observed up to 56–81%. To achieve superior fire safety epoxy resins (EP), a novel multifunctional organic-inorganic hybrid, melamine-containing polyphosphazene wrapped ammonium polyphosphate (PZMA@APP) with rich amino groups was prepared and used as an efficient flame retardant. Thanks to the cross-linked polyphosphazene part, PZMA@APP exhibited high flame retardant efficiency and smoke suppression to the EP composites. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that PZMA@APP significantly enhanced the thermal stability of EP composites. The obtained sample passed UL-94 V-0 rating with 10.0 wt% addition of PZMA@APP. Notably, inclusion of incorporating PZMA@APP leads to significantly decrease on fire hazards of EP, for instance, bring about a 75.6% maximum decrease in peak heat release rate and 65.9% maximum reduction in total heat release, accompanied with lower smoke production rate and higher graphitized char layer. With regards to mechanical property, the glass transition temperature of EP/PZMA@APP10.0 was as high as 184.5 °C. In particular, the addition of PZMA@APP did not worsen the mechanical properties, compared to pure APP. It was confirmed that the participation of melamine-containing polyphosphazene could significantly enhance the quality of char layer and thereby resulting the higher flame retardant efficiency of PZMA@APP. Organic modification of MoSe 2 sheets is firstly achieved by Atherton-Todd reaction, aiming at the acquisition of multifunctional MoSe 2 hybrid. Simultaneous enhancements in fire safety and mechanical property of thermalplastic polyurethane (TPU) are obtained with the presence of this hybrid. Strong interfacial interactions between the functionalized MoSe 2 sheets and TPU can be obtained, making more efficient load transfer from the weak polymer chains to the robust sheets. Besides, more coherent barrier network may be formed in polymer matrix, restraining the diffusion of decomposed fragments and reducing the supply for combustion fuel. Consequently, the decreases in heat release are observed for polymer composites. Notably, the releases of toxic gases, such as HCN and CO, are also suppressed by this barrier network, resulting in the reductions in fire toxicity. Zinc hydroxystannate (ZHS) was fabricated on the surface of amorphous hydrous TiO 2 solid spheres (AHTSS) via a layer-by-layer method for improving the fire safety of epoxy resin. AHTSS@PEI@ZHS was prepared by self-assembly of AHTSS, PEI and ZHS. The well-organized fabrication process was proved by TEM, XPS, XRD and SEM tests. TG results illustrated that the incorporation of AHTSS@PEI@ZHS show a higher residue compared with the addition of AHTSS or ZHS alone. In addition, AHTSS@PEI@ZHS filled EP composites exhibits improved flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties evaluated by cone calorimeter test. TG-IR results also indicated that the catalytic labyrinth structure of AHTSS@PEI@ZHS can effectively decrease the permeation of volatile organic compounds, thereby improving the fire safety of EP resin., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V.
