A [super.1.H] NMR study for the binding of rhodamine B (RB) to the polyanion containing aromatic groups poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) is presented, which is also evidenced by diafiltration. [super.1.H] NMR spectra displayed an accentuated upfield shift of proton H6' of the benzoic ring of RB at pH 7, indicating the stacking of RB onto PSS.

The binding of rhodamine B (RB) to the polyanion containing aromatic groups poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was studied by separation and spectroscopic techniques at pH between 2 and 7. At pH below 5 significant binding was found together with a red-shift of the RB maximum of absorbance to 564nm and RB fluorescence quenching and the basicity of RB increased by the influence of the polymer.

The evidence of the binding of 2,3,5-triphenyl-2H- tetrazolium chloride (TTC) to poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) by diafiltration, UV-vis spectroscopy and [super 1]H NMR is presented. The oxidizing ability of TTC in the absence and in the presence of the three water-soluble polymers (WSP) is shown by making it react with ascorbic acid (ASC).

Water-soluble polymers are treated with metal ions as surface phenomena in which different metal species compete with each other to blind to the polymer surface. A change in the rate of release of divalent metal ions by the polymer is detected, which is attributable to a change in the polymer conformation.
