Using the orthorhombic layered Na2FePO4F cathode material as a model system we identify the bonding of the alkali metal cations to the semilabile oxygen atoms as an important factor affecting electrochemical activity of alkali cations in polyanion structures. The semilabile oxygens, bonded to the P and alkali cations, but not included into the FeO4F2 octahedra, experience severe undercoordination upon alkali cation deintercalation, causing an energy penalty for removing the alkali cations located in the proximity of such semilabile oxygens. Desodiation of Na2FePO4F proceeds through a two-phase mechanism in the Na-ion cell with a formation of an intermediate monoclinic Na1.55FePO4F phase with coupled Na/vacancy and Fe2+/Fe3+ charge ordering at 50% state of charge. In contrast, desodiation of Na2FePO4F in the Li-ion cell demonstrates a sloping charge profile suggesting a solid solution mechanism without formation of a charge-ordered intermediate phase. Heavy atom-free BODIPY-anthracene dyads (BADs) generate locally excited triplet states by way of photoinduced electron transfer (PeT), followed by recombination of the resulting charge-separated states (CSS). Subsequent quenching of the triplet states by molecular oxygen produces singlet oxygen (1O2), which reacts with the anthracene moiety yielding highly fluorescent species. The steric demand of the alkyl substituents in the BODIPY subunit defines the site of 1O2 addition. Novel bis- and tetraepoxides and bicyclic acetal products, arising from rearrangements of anthracene endoperoxides were isolated and characterized. 1O2 generation by BADs in living cells enables visualization of the dyads distribution, promising new imaging applications.

An electrochemical cell consisting of cobalt ([CoII/III(P3O9)2]4–/3–) and vanadium ([VIII/II(P3O9)2]3–/4–) bistrimetaphosphate complexes as catholyte and anolyte species, respectively, was constructed with a cell voltage of 2.4 V and Coulombic efficiencies >90% for up to 100 total cycles. The [Co(P3O9)2]4– (1) and [V(P3O9)2]3– (2) complexes have favorable properties for flow-battery applications, including reversible redox chemistry, high stability toward electrochemical cycling, and high solubility in MeCN (1.09 ± 0.02 M, [PPN]4[1]·2MeCN; 0.77 ± 0.06 M, [PPN]3[2]·DME). The [PPN]4[1]·2MeCN and [PPN]3[2]·DME salts were isolated as crystalline solids in 82 and 68% yields, respectively, and characterized by 31P NMR, UV/vis, ESI-MS(−), and IR spectroscopy. The [PPN]4[1]·2MeCN salt was also structurally characterized, crystallizing in the monoclinic P21/c space group. The aryl-substituted bis(imino)pyridine cobalt methyl complex, ((Mes)PDI)CoCH3 ((Mes)PDI = 2,6-(2,4,6-Me3C6H2-N═CMe)2C5H3N), promotes the catalytic dehydrogenative silylation of linear α-olefins to selectively form the corresponding allylsilanes with commercially relevant tertiary silanes such as (Me3SiO)2MeSiH and (EtO)3SiH. Dehydrogenative silylation of internal olefins such as cis- and trans-4-octene also exclusively produces the allylsilane with the silicon located at the terminus of the hydrocarbon chain, resulting in a highly selective base-metal-catalyzed method for the remote functionalization of C-H bonds with retention of unsaturation. The cobalt-catalyzed reactions also enable inexpensive α-olefins to serve as functional equivalents of the more valuable α, ω-dienes and offer a unique method for the cross-linking of silicone fluids with well-defined carbon spacers. Stoichiometric experiments and deuterium labeling studies support activation of the cobalt alkyl precursor to form a putative cobalt silyl, which undergoes 2,1-insertion of the alkene followed by selective β-hydrogen elimination from the carbon distal from the large tertiary silyl group and accounts for the observed selectivity for allylsilane formation.

We report that phosphotyrosine-cholesterol conjugates effectively and selectively kill cancer cells, including platinum-resistant ovarian cancer cells. The conjugate increases the degree of noncovalent oligomerization upon enzymatic dephosphorylation in aqueous buffer. This enzymatic conversion also results in the assembly of the cholesterol conjugates inside and outside cells and leads to cell death. Preliminary mechanistic studies suggest that the formed assemblies of the conjugates not only interact with actin filaments and microtubules but also affect lipid rafts. As the first report of multifaceted supramolecular assemblies of cholesterol conjugates against cancer cells, this work illustrates the integration of enzyme catalysis and self-assembly of essential biological small molecules on and inside cancer cells as a promising strategy for developing multifunctional therapeutics to treat drug-resistant cancers.

The manufacture of advanced polyolefins has been critically enabled by the development of single-site heterogeneous catalysts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great potential as heterogeneous catalysts that may be designed and tuned on the molecular level. In this work, exchange of zinc ions in Zn5Cl4(BTDD)3, H2BTDD = bis(1H-1,2,3-triazolo[4,5-b],[4',5'-i])dibenzo[1,4]dioxin) (MFU-4l) with reactive metals serves to establish a general platform for selective olefin polymerization in a high surface area solid promising for industrial catalysis. Characterization of polyethylene produced by these materials demonstrates both molecular and morphological control. Notably, reactivity approaches single-site catalysis, as evidenced by low polydispersity indices, and good molecular weight control. We further show that these new catalysts copolymerize ethylene and propylene. Uniform growth of the polymer around the catalyst particles provides a mechanism for controlling the polymer morphology, a relevant metric for continuous flow processes.

A nonwoven fabric with paperlike qualities composed of silicon nanowires is reported. The nanowires, made by the supercritical-fluid-liquid-solid process, are crystalline, range in diameter from 10 to 50 nm with an average length of100 μm, and are coated with a thin chemisorbed polyphenylsilane shell. About 90% of the nanowire fabric volume is void space. Thermal annealing of the nanowire fabric in a reducing environment converts the polyphenylsilane coating to a carbonaceous layer that significantly increases the electrical conductivity of the material. This makes the nanowire fabric useful as a self-supporting, mechanically flexible, high-energy-storage anode material in a lithium ion battery. Anode capacities of more than 800 mA h g(-1) were achieved without the addition of conductive carbon or binder.

Thiol monolayer-protected Au clusters (MPCs) were prepared using dendrimer templates, deposited onto a high-surface-area titania, and then the thiol stabilizers were removed under H2/N2. The resulting Au catalysts were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO. The Au catalysts prepared via this route displayed minimal particle agglomeration during the deposition and activation steps. Structural data obtained from the physical characterization of the Au catalysts were comparable to features exhibited from a traditionally prepared standard Au catalyst obtained from the World Gold Council (WGC). A differential kinetic study of CO oxidation catalysis by the MPC-prepared Au and the standard WGC catalyst showed that these two catalyst systems have essentially the same reaction order and Arrhenius apparent activation energies (28 kJ/mol). However, the MPC-prepared Au catalyst shows 50% greater activity for CO oxidation. Using a Michaelis-Menten approach, the oxygen binding constants for the two catalyst systems were determined and found to be essentially the same within experimental error. To our knowledge, this kinetic evaluation is the first experimental determination of oxygen binding by supported Au nanoparticle catalysts under working conditions. The values for the oxygen binding equilibrium constant obtained from the Michaelis-Menten treatment (ca. 29-39) are consistent with ultra-high-vacuum measurements on model catalyst systems and support density functional theory calculations for oxygen binding at corner or edge atoms on Au nanoparticles and clusters.

A porous metal-organic framework Zr6O4(OH)4(L-PdX)3 (1-X) has been constructed from Pd diphosphinite pincer complexes ([L-PdX](4-) = [(2,6-(OPAr2)2C6H3)PdX](4-), Ar = p-C6H4CO2(-), X = Cl, I). Reaction of 1-X with PhI(O2CCF3)2 facilitates I(-)/CF3CO2(-) ligand exchange to generate 1-TFA and I2 as a soluble byproduct. 1-TFA is an active and recyclable catalyst for transfer hydrogenation of benzaldehydes using formic acid as a hydrogen source. In contrast, the homogeneous analogue (t)Bu(L-PdTFA) is an ineffective catalyst owing to decomposition under the catalytic conditions, highlighting the beneficial effects of immobilization.

The functionality and structural diversity of biological macromolecules has motivated efforts to exploit proteins and DNA as templates for synthesis of electronic architectures. Although such materials offer promise for numerous applications in the fabrication of cellular interfaces, biosensors, and nanoelectronics, identification of techniques for positioning and ordering bioelectronic components into useful patterns capable of sophisticated function has presented a major challenge. Here, we describe the fabrication of electronic materials using biomolecular scaffolds that can be constructed with precisely defined topographies. In this approach, a tightly focused pulsed laser beam capable of promoting protein photo-cross-linking in specified femtoliter volume elements is scanned within a protein solution, creating biomolecular matrices that either remain in integral contact with a support surface or extend as free-standing structures through solution, tethered at their ends. Once fabricated, specific protein scaffolds can be selectively metallized via targeted deposition and growth of metal nanoparticles, yielding high-conductivity bioelectronic materials. This aqueous fabrication strategy opens new opportunities for creating electronic materials in chemically sensitive environments and may offer a general approach for creating microscopically defined inorganic landscapes.

The syntheses of several norbornene block copolymers containing oligonucleotide and ferrocenyl side chains and their use in the electrochemical detection of DNA are described. Two kinds of DNA-containing block copolymers with either ferrocenyl or dibromoferrocenyl groups were prepared via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). Based on these two distinct ferrocene derivatives, a triblock copolymer labeling strategy was developed. With this strategy, the identity of DNA target can be determined by the E1/2s of the ferrocenyl moieties and the ratio of peak currents. These polymers exhibit predictable and tailorable electrochemical properties, high DNA duplex stability, and unusually sharp melting transitions, which are highly desirable characteristics for DNA detection applications. Significantly, single-base mismatches could be easily detected using two distinct block copolymers as dual-channel detection probes in an electrochemical DNA detection format.

The oxidative adsorption of n-alkanethiolates (CncH2nc+1S-) at Ag(111) in aqueous and methanolic solutions containing 0.5 M NaOH has been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and in-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). Reversible adsorption of CncH2nc+1S- under active potential control in solutions containing millimolar concentrations of CncH2nc+1S- provides a means to control the deposition of n-alkanethiolate monolayers, and allows for the direct voltammetric measurement of the free energy of monolayer formation. Oxidative adsorption of short chain alkanethiolates (nc ≤ 6) in aqueous 0.5 M NaOH is characterized by two voltammetric waves, demonstrating that monolayer formation involves at least two energetically distinct chemical steps. The first voltammetric wave corresponds to the reversible and rapid adsorption of CncH2nc+1S- at submonolayer coverages. The electrochemical deposition of ethanethiolate monolayers on Ag(111) has been investigated by in-situ surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), and voltammetric methods. In aqueous 0.2 M NaOH solutions containing 5 mM ethanethiolate, the voltammetric response at Ag(111) displays two well-resolved surface waves with half-wave potentials (E1/2) of −1.17 and −0.95 V vs Ag/AgCl. The two-wave voltammetric response suggests a mechanism of monolayer deposition that consists of two energetically-distinct reaction steps, a conclusion supported by in-situ SERS and EQCM measurements of the potential-dependent adsorption isotherm. The voltammetric wave located at more negative potentials (E1/2 = −1.17 V) has a nearly ideal Nernstian shape and is associated with the initial rapid oxidative adsorption of ethanethiolate at submonolayer coverage. The reaction of the {eta}{sup 2}(N,C)-pyridine complex with LiBEt{sub 3}H affords the C-N bond scission product (2). The reactions of (1) with carbon nucleophiles RLi or RMgX provide the alkyl derivatives [R = Me (3), Et (4), {sup n}Pr (5), {sup n}Bu (6), and CH{sub 2}SiMe{sub 3} (7)]. Kinetic and mechanistic studies of the 3 {yields} 8 rearrangement reveal that methyl migration is strictly intramolecular. The reactions of this model system delineate one process by which heterocyclic C-N bonds are cleaved and offer new insight as to how nitrogen heterocycles may be further degraded after C-N bond cleavage in hydrodenitrogenation catalysis. 74 refs., 7 figs., 5 tabs.

Here we describe a very simple, reliable, low-cost electrochemical approach to detect single nanoparticles (NPs) and evaluate NP size distributions and catalytic activity in a fast and reproducible manner. Single NPs are detected through an increase in current caused by electrocatalytic oxidation of N(2)H(4) at the surface of the NP when it contacts a Hg-modified Pt ultramicroelectrode (Hg/Pt UME). Once the NP contacts the Hg/Pt UME, Hg poisons the Pt NP, deactivating the N(2)H(4) oxidation reaction. Hence, the current response is a "spike" that decays to the background current level rather than a stepwise "staircase" response as previously described for a Au UME. The use of Hg as an electrode material has several quantitative advantages including suppression of the background current by 2 orders of magnitude over a Au UME, increased signal-to-noise ratio for detection of individual collisions, precise integration of current transients to determine charge passed and NP size, reduction of surface-induced NP aggregation and electrode fouling processes, and reproducible and renewable electrodes for routine detection of catalytic NPs. The NP collision frequency was found to scale linearly with the NP concentration (0.016 to 0.024 pM(-1)s(-1)). NP size distributions of 4-24 nm as determined from the current-time transients correlated well with theory and TEM-derived size distributions.

The reaction of Fe(N(SiMe(3))(2))(3) with PH(3) in THF at 100 °C gives amorphous FeP(2) in high yield. As an anode material in a Li ion battery, this material shows remarkable performance toward electrochemical lithiation/delithation, with gravimetric discharge and charge capacities of 1258 and 766 mA h g(-1), respectively, translating to 61% reversibility on the first cycle and a discharge capacity of 906 mA h g(-1) after 10 cycles. This translates to 66% retention of the theoretical full conversion capacity of FeP(2) (1365 mA h g(-1)).

We report the discovery of soliton-like electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) waves in the electrochemical oxidation of thin films (15−250 nm) of the semiconducting conjugated polymer poly(9,9-dioctylfluorene-co-benzothiadiazole) (F8BT). The ECL “wave fronts” were visualized and imaged in space and time by optical emission microscopy and observed to freely propagate parallel to the plane of the electrode. The data reveal that the EC solitons are triggered by the flux of electrolytes into the polymer film at nanoscale “leaks” (or defects) and propagate by a highly nonlinear, positive-feedback kinetic mechanism involving EC oxidation, mass transport of electrolyte anions, and oxidation-induced swelling, all taking place within the conjugated polymer film. Several model systems with spatially distributed reaction “triggers” were studied to elucidate the mechanistic details of this complex oxidation process in polymer films.

The simple α,β-unsaturated ketones and 2-pyrones are readily available and synthetically important dienophiles and dienes, respectively, for Diels−Alder reactions. However, both prove to be challenging substrates for catalytic asymmetric Diels−Alder reactions. By exploring a new catalysis strategy featuring cooperative catalysis with readily available cinchona catalysts, an unprecedented asymmetric Diels−Alder reaction of simple α,β-unsaturated ketones with 2-pyrones has been successfully developed. With broad scopes for both reactants, the reaction provides a direct and versatile asymmetric access to a wide range of structurally novel bicyclic chiral building blocks amenable for further synthetic elaborations.

Bimetallic dendrimer-stabilized nanoparticles (DSNs) were used to prepare supported Pt-Au catalysts within the bulk miscibility gap for this binary system. Hydroxy-terminated generation 5 PAMAM dendrimers were used to prepare Cu(0) nanoparticles (NPs). The Cu(0) NPs were subsequently used to reduce K(2)PtCl(4) and HAuCl(4), preparing stabilized bimetallic Pt-Au NPs with a 1:1 stoichiometry. The stabilized NPs were adsorbed onto a high surface area silica support and thermally activated to remove the dendrimers. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and infrared spectroscopy of adsorbed CO showed that this preparation route resulted in NPs in which the two metals are intimately mixed and that the majority of the bimetallic NPs were smaller than 3 nm. Further, the bimetallic NPs were highly active for CO oxidation catalysis near room temperature and showed evidence of CO induced restructuring at ambient temperatures.

Self-assembled supramolecular nanotubes of J-aggregated amphiphilic cyanine dye in aqueous solution are employed as chemically active templates for the photoinitiated formation of silver nanowires with a very small and homogeneous diameter of (6.4 +/- 0.5) nm. Key features of the template are (1) its small and well-defined diameter; (2) its photochemical activity, which allows photoinitiation of the structure formation; and (3) the processability in aqueous solution. The latter includes the potential to remove the template after the reaction, or to functionalize it further, e.g. with optoelectronically active polycations, providing access to quasi one-dimensional hybrid structures with well-defined metallic nanowires as a core.
