The evaporation of a nano-suspension droplet on a substrate has gained extensive attention recently due to its potential application in the rising industry of functional coating. In this paper, we reported that the droplet evaporation behavior can be controlled by the nanoparticles' concentration and the functional group on the surface of nanoparticles. Experimental results indicated that the suspension of nanoparticles notably enhanced the evaporation rate of droplets and decreased the duration time of the continuous-contact-radius (CCR) stage. This effect was more obvious when the nanoparticles were modified by the perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (PDTS), which made the particles more hydrophobic. Besides, the modified nanoparticles can effectively inhibit the formation of coffee rings during evaporation. These results may have important applications for the energy-efficient enhancement of the water evaporation rate.

The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) has been used to study how the interfacial layer of an ionic liquid dissolved in a polar oil at low weight percentages responds to changes in applied potential. The changes in surface composition at the QCM gold surface depend on both the magnitude and sign of the applied potential. The time-resolved response indicates that the relaxation kinetics are limited by the diffusion of ions in the interfacial region and not in the bulk, since there is no concentration dependence. The measured mass changes cannot be explained only in terms of simple ion exchange; the relative molecular volumes of the ions and the density changes in response to ion exclusion must be considered. The relaxation behavior of the potential between the electrodes upon disconnecting the applied potential is more complex than that observed for pure ionic liquids, but a measure of the surface charge can be extracted from the exponential decay when the rapid initial potential drop is accounted for. The adsorbed film at the gold surface consists predominantly of ionic liquid despite the low concentration, which is unsurprising given the surtactant-like structures of (some of) the ionic liquid ions. Changes in response to potential correspond to changes in the relative numbers of cations and anions, rather than a change in the oil composition. No evidence for an electric field induced change in viscosity is observed. This work shows conclusively that electric potentials can be used to control the surface composition, even in an oil-based system, and paves the way for other ion solvent studies.

Thiolated functional nucleic acid-gold nanoparticle conjugates (FNA-AuNPs) are the core recognition elements in biosensors. The long-term functional stability (LTFS) is critical for their practical applications and, however, has been overlooked. Here we report on the huge effects of multiple experimental factors on LTFS, including spacer- and buffer-composition, secondary structures of FNAs, and surface blocking. We quantitatively determined these effects by measuring the relative hybridization capacity (RHC, the relative amount of complementary DNA hybridized with the same amount of conjugates) for linear DNA-AuNP or the relative signal change generated by their function (RSC-F) for molecular beacon (MB) and G-quadruplex (G4)-AuNPs. Chemical pigments are damaging to the environment; however, a nontoxic substance (including TiO2 and SiO2) often appears white because of the incoherent multiple scattering. The addition of small black substances can enhance the structural color of the amorphous system. Herein, colored amorphous photonic crystals (APCs) with angle-independence were fabricated by TiO2-coated polystyrene core–shell nanoparticles (PS@TiO2 NPs) via a healthy and time-saving sprayed method. Compared with generally used collide materials, such as PS and SiO2 NPs with smooth surfaces, the rough TiO2 NPs shell structure has significant advances for the underwater oil-repellent property. Bubble-driven micromotors have attracted substantial interest due to their remarkable self-motile and cargo-delivering abilities in biomedical or environmental applications. Here, we developed a hollow micromotor that experiences fast self-propulsion underneath an air–liquid interface by periodic bubble growth and collapse. The collapsing of a single microbubble induces a ∼1 m·s–1 impulsive jetting flow that instantaneously pushes the micromotor forward. Unlike previously reported micromotors propelled by the recoiling of bubbles, cavitation-induced jetting further utilizes the energy stored in the bubble to propel the micromotor and thus enhances the energy conversion efficiency by 3 orders of magnitude. The interfacial properties of nanodroplets are very significant for the exploration of the basic law governing the fluid behavior at the nanoscale and also the applications in some important processes in novel materials fabrication by forming a special and local reaction environment. However, many basic factors such as the interfacial tension or stiffness of nanodroplets are still lacking, partially because of the difficulty of making quantitative measurements of the interfacial interactions at the nanometer scale. Here, we used a novel atomic force microscopy (AFM) mode, PeakForce mode, to control the interaction between an AFM probe and nanodroplets, by which we could obtain the morphology and stiffness of nanodroplets simultaneously. The change in the stiffness with the size of the nanodroplets was observed where the smaller nanodroplets usually had a larger stiffness. To explain this phenomenon, we then established a theoretical model based on the Young-Laplace equation in which the deformation and size-dependent stiffness could be described quantitatively and the experimental observations could be explained with our numerical calculations very well. The general methodology presented here could also be extended to analyze the relevant behavior of nanobubbles and other wetting phenomena at the nanoscale.

The design of positively charged ultrathin films for surface modification is of crucial importance for biomedical applications. Herein, we report the layer-by-layer assembly of pure positively charged ultrathin films based on the host-guest interaction of cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). Two positively charged poly(ethylenimine)s (PEI) functionalized with guest moieties methyl viologen (MV) and indole (ID) were alternately assembled with the formation of CB[8] ternary complex under basic conditions. The growth of the (PEI-MV@CB[8]/PEI-ID) films was monitored by spectroscopic ellipsometry and quartz crystal microbalance. The morphology and structure of the films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. These positively charged (PEI-MV@CB[8]/PEI-ID) films were very stable in the pH range from 4 to 9 but disassembled immediately when subjected to a competitive guest adamantylamine. Finally, the films were successfully employed as nanocontainers for DNA loading and subsequent directing the transfection of the adhered cells.

We use contact angle goniometry, imaging ellipsometry, and atomic force microscopy to study the stability and wettability of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) monolayers of stearic acid on silica substrates, upon drying and exposure to aqueous solutions of varying salinity. The influences of Ca(2+) and Na(+) ions are compared by varying their concentrations, both in the subphase before the LB transfer, and in the droplets to which the dried LB layers are exposed. Ca(2+) ions in the subphase are found to enhance the stability, leading to contact angles up to 100°, as compared to less than 5° for Na(+). Consistent with the macroscopic wettability, AFM images show almost intact films with few holes exposing bare substrate when prepared in the presence of Ca(2+), while subphases containing Na(+) result in large areas of bare substrate after exposure to aqueous drops. The observations on varying the composition of the droplets corroborate the stabilizing effect of Ca(2+). We attribute these findings to the cation-bridging ability of Ca(2+) ions, which can bind the negatively charged stearate groups to the negatively charged substrates. We discuss the relevance of our findings in the context of enhanced oil recovery.

Polymer brush layers based on block copolymers of poly(oligo(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (POEGMA) and poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) were formed on silicon wafers by activators generated by electron transfer atom transfer radical polymerization (AGET ATRP). Different types of biomolecule can be conjugated to these brush layers by reaction of PGMA epoxide groups with amino groups in the biomolecule, while POEGMA, which resists nonspecific protein adsorption, provides an antifouling environment. Surfaces were characterized by water contact angle, ellipsometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to confirm the modification reactions. Phase segregation of the copolymer blocks in the layers was observed by AFM. The effect of surface properties on protein conjugation was investigated using radiolabeling methods. It was shown that surfaces with POEGMA layers were protein resistant, while the quantity of protein conjugated to the diblock copolymer modified surfaces increased with increasing PGMA layer thickness. The activity of lysozyme conjugated on the surface could also be controlled by varying the thickness of the copolymer layer. When biotin was conjugated to the block copolymer grafts, the surface remained resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption but showed specific binding of avidin. These properties, that is, well-controlled quantity and activity of conjugated biomolecules and specificity of interaction with target biomolecules may be exploited for the improvement of signal-to-noise ratio in sensor applications. More generally, such surfaces may be useful as biological recognition elements of high specificity for functional biomaterials.

In this work, we develop a novel environmentally friendly strategy toward one-pot synthesis of CuS nanoparticle-decorated reduced graphene oxide (CuS/rGO) nanocomposites with the use of l-cysteine, an amino acid, as a reducing agent, sulfur donor, and linker to anchor CuS nanoparticles onto the surface of rGO sheets. Upon visible light illumination (λ > 400 nm), the CuS/rGO nanocomposites show pronounced enhanced photocurrent response and improved photocatalytic activity in the degradation of methylene blue (MB) compared to pure CuS. This could be attributed to the efficient charge transport of rGO sheets and hence reduced recombination rate of excited carriers.

The development of scaffolded DNA origami, a technique in which a long single-stranded viral genome is folded into arbitrary shapes by hundreds of short synthetic oligonucleotides, represents an important milestone in DNA nanotechnology. Recent findings have revealed that two-dimensional (2D) DNA origami structures based on the original design parameters adopt a global twist with respect to the tile plane, which may be because the conformation of the constituent DNA (10.67 bp/turn) deviates from the natural B-type helical twist (10.4 bp/turn). Here we aim to characterize the effects of DNA hairpin loops on the overall curvature of the tile and explore their ability to control, and ultimately eliminate any unwanted curvature. A series of dumbbell-shaped DNA loops were selectively displayed on the surface of DNA origami tiles with the expectation that repulsive interactions among the neighboring dumbbell loops and between the loops and the DNA origami tile would influence the structural features of the underlying tiles. A systematic, atomic force microscopy (AFM) study of how the number and position of the DNA loops influenced the global twist of the structure was performed, and several structural models to explain the results were proposed. The observations unambiguously revealed that the first generation of rectangular shaped origami tiles adopt a conformation in which the upper right (corner 2) and bottom left (corner 4) corners bend upward out of the plane, causing linear superstructures attached by these corners to form twisted ribbons. Our experimental observations are consistent with the twist model predicted by the DNA mechanical property simulation software CanDo. Through the systematic design and organization of various numbers of dumbbell loops on both surfaces of the tile, a nearly planar rectangular origami tile was achieved.

Multilayers of manganese(III) porphyrin-linked poly(vinylpyridinium) (MnTMPyP-PVPMe) polyelectrolyte and poly(styrenesulfonic acid-o-maleic) acid (PSS) have been assembled on gold, quartz, and indium tin oxide surfaces by a layer-by-layer (LBL) technique. The assembly process was monitored by measuring their absorption spectra and frequency change after each assembly, both of which confirmed the formation of three-dimensional MnTMPyP-PVPMe/PSS multilayers. The Soret absorption band of porphyrin red shifted about 8 nm in the multilayer compared with that in the dilute aqueous solution. The average mass changes for each assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe and PSS were estimated to be about 2.9 and 0.25 μg/cm(2), respectively. X-ray photoelectron spectra revealed that the as-prepared multilayers were composed of S 2p, C 1s, N 1s, O 1s, and Mn 2p, corresponding to polymers of MnTMPyP-PVPMe and PSS. A rough surface was observed after the assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe on the gold surface, but it became smoother when the PSS layer was adsorbed. The significant difference in the mass change and film morphology after the assembly of MnTMPyP-PVPMe compared to those after the assembly of PSS was ascribed to the reason that the MnTMPyP-PVPMe polyelectrolyte contained large metalloporphyrin macrocycles, which were axially coordinated to the pyridyl substituents of the PVP polymeric backbones. The cyclic voltammograms revealed two couples of redox waves in the phosphate electrolyte solution at pH 11, which corresponded to the electron-transfer processes of Mn(II)/Mn(III) and Mn(III)/Mn(IV) of polymeric manganese porphyrin MnTMPyP-PVPMe. The charge-transfer process was also investigated. Finally, the present MnTMPyP-PVPMe/PSS multilayers were used as a heterogeneous catalyst for the decoloration of an azo dye.

In this letter, we report on the one-step synthesis of Ag@poly(m-phenylenediamine) core-shell nanoparticles (APCSNPs), carried out by direct mixing of aqueous silver nitrate and m-phenylenediamine solutions at room temperature. We further demonstrate the use of APCSNP as a novel fluorescent sensing platform for nucleic acid detection. In this regard, the detection of DNA is accomplished in two steps. First, APCSNP absorbs and quenches the fluorescence of dye-labeled single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) as a probe. Second, hybridizing of the probe with its target produces a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) that detaches from APCSNP, resulting in the recovery of dye fluorescence. It suggests that this sensing system has a high selectivity down to single-base mismatch, and the results exhibit good reproducibility. Furthermore, we also demonstrate its application for the multiplex detection of nucleic acid sequences.

In this Letter, we demonstrate that chemical oxidation polymerization of o-phenylenediamine (OPD) by potassium bichromate at room temperature results in the formation of submicrometer-scale poly(o-phenylenediamine) (POPD) colloids. Such colloids can absorb and quench dye-labeled single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) very effectively. In the presence of a target, a hybridization event occurs, which produces a double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) that detaches from the POPD surface, leading to recovery of dye fluorescence. With the use of an oligonucleotide (OND) sequence associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) as a model system, we demonstrate the proof of concept that POPD colloid-quenched fluorescent OND can be used as a probe for fluorescence-enhanced nucleic acid detection with selectivity down to single-base mismatch.

A simple and robust process has been developed to control the growth of the organic nanowires in situ self-assembled in a polymer matrix, lift off the nanostructure/polymer composite film from the mother substrate for storage and transfer, and remove the polymer host prior to usage. Every step was completed through a solution process, which ensured the process's simplicity and low cost. The realization of large-sized nanowire/polymer composite film demonstrated the necessary process scalability required by the industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing.

The in situ crystallization technique has been utilized to fabricate zirconium phenylphosphonate (ZrPP) films with their hexagonal crystallite perpendicular to the copper substrate. The micro/nano roughness surface structure, as well as the intrinsic hydrophobic characteristic of the surface functional groups, affords ZrPP films excellent hydrophobicity with water contact angle (CA) ranging from 134 degrees to 151 degrees , without any low-surface-energy modification. Particularly, in the corrosive solutions such as acidic or basic solutions over a wide pH from 2 to 12, no obvious fluctuation in CA was observed for all the ZrPP film. The k values of the hydrophobic ZrPP films are in the low-k range (k3.0), meeting the development of ultra-large-scale integration (ULSI) circuits. The hydrophobicity feature is proposed to bear ZrPP film a more stable low-k value in an ambient atmosphere. Besides, the polarization current of ZrPP films is reduced by 2 orders of magnitude, compared to that of the untreated copper substrate. Even deposited in a vacuum oven for 30 days at room temperature, ZrPP films also show excellent corrosion resistance, indicating a stable anticorrosion property.

Three different polymorphic crystalline structures, including microbelts and flowerlike supernanostructures, were obtained via a simple solution process by utilizing different solvents from an oligoarene derivative. Explosive chemosensors based on these self-assembled organic crystalline nanostructures were successfully fabricated. The differences in the structures on the microscopic level and in the film morphologies led to dramatic enhancements of the explosive detection speed. With the evolution of structures from the netted 1D microbelts to the flowerlike supernanostructures, the detection speed of the chemosensors for DNT and TNT was improved by more than 700 times. Our discovery demonstrates that the morphology control through self-assembly provides a new platform to utilize organic crystalline microstructures for chemosensors, optoelectronics, biosensors and bioelectronics, and so forth.
