The article discusses research which analyzed the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) program which released the April 2017 standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of second solid cancers in mastocytosis patients. The article explains the SIR assessment of the rate of development of second malignancies. Also mentioned is the statistically increased risk of second cancer driven by the presence of hematologic malignancies.

The article presents a study leading to a development of an accurate, sensitive, and mid-throughput bead-based liquid assay for the detention of the JAK2 V617F mutation. It notes that researchers have used a locked nucleic acid (LNA)-modified oligonucleotide probes that might facilitate in the multiplexing of the assay. Noted is that researcher were able to identify 10 percent mutant allele and that the assay has been found superior in terms of sensitivity using artificial plasmid constructs.

A letter to the editor is presented in response to the article "Detection of JAK2 Mutations in Paraffin Marrow Biopsies By High Resolution Melting Analysis: Identification of L611S Alone and In CIS With V617F in Polycythemia Vera," by R.H. Nussenzveig, T. Burjanivova, and M.E. Salama that was published in a 2012 issue of the journal "Leukemia & Lymphoma."
