Abstract

The article presents information about developments in the digitalization of library resources in the 20th and 21st centuries. Written material is being digitized at a rate of 800 to 1300 pages per hour, so that libraries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East and the U.S. are able to offer scanned images of archived material to Internet users. An academic study by Swiss historian Monika Dommann is referenced, which discusses the use and regulation of copy machines and their social impact.

Abstract

The article reports on how the Austrian National Library in Vienna, Austria is working on converting historical documents into digital documents, so that they can be published on the internet. The project is focusing on the daily newspapers that were published in the constituent lands of the Austrian Empire during the reign of the House of Habsburg, an Austrian royal ruling family, and is being financed by the ERSTE Stiftung, a foundation of the Erste Bank financial institution.
