Cryogenic buffer gas beams are central to many cold molecule experiments. Here, we use absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy to directly compare molecular beams of AlF, CaF, MgF and YbF molecules, produced by chemical reaction of laser ablated atoms with fluorine rich reagents. The beam brightness for AlF is measured as 2 × 10 12 molecules per steradian per pulse in a single rotational state, comparable to an Al atomic beam produced in the same setup. The CaF, MgF and YbF beams show an order of magnitude lower brightness than AlF and far below the brightness of Ca and Yb beams. The addition of either NF 3 or SF 6 to the cell extinguishes the Al atomic beam, but has a minimal effect on the Ca and Yb beams. NF 3 reacts more efficiently than SF 6 , as a significantly lower flow rate is required to maximise the molecule production, which is particularly beneficial for long-term stability of the AlF beam. We use NO as a proxy for the reactant gas as it can be optically detected. We demonstrate that a cold, rotationally pure NO beam can be generated by laser desorption, thereby gaining insight into the dynamics of the reactant gas inside the buffer gas cell. Impurity physics is a traditional topic in condensed matter physics that nowadays is being explored in the field of ultracold gases. Among the different classes of impurities, we focus on charged impurities in an ultracold bath. When a single ion is brought in contact with an ultracold gas, it is subjected to different reactive processes that can be understood from a cold chemistry perspective. In this work, we present an outlook of approaches for the dynamics of a single ion in a bath of ultracold atoms or molecules, complementing the usual many-body approaches characteristic of impurity physics within condensed matter physics. In particular, we focus on the evolution of a charged impurity in different baths, including external time-dependent trapping potentials, and explore the effect of the external laser sources present in ion-neutral hybrid traps on the reaction probability and evolution of an impurity. Paramagnetic, dipolar Hund's case-a radicals are considered in the presence of arbitrary, non-collinear combinations of electric and magnetic fields. The field-dependent part of the Hamiltonian is found to exhibit a good quantum number, consisting of the projection of the molecule's total angular momentum along a space-fixed axis that is determined by both the fields and the electric and magnetic dipole moments of the molecule. This quantity remains good even when the fields are non-collinear. Exploiting this feature identifies a set of quantum numbers for the molecule in crossed fields. We investigate cooperative phenomena and superradiance for vibrational transitions in polar molecule spectroscopy of high optical-depth samples. Such cooperativity comes from the build-up of inter-particle coherence through dipole-dipole interactions and leads to speed-up of decay processes. We compare our calculation to recent work and find very good agreement, suggesting that superradiant effects need to be taken into account in a wide variety of ultracold molecule experiments, including vibrational and rotational states. Cold and ultracold Rydberg atoms are in considerable vogue for their ability to creating strong interactions, stemming from their exaggerated and readily tunable properties. Ultralong-range Rydberg molecules have been predicted to form from the interaction of ultracold Rydberg atoms with ground-state atoms and polar molecules. In this work, we discuss and demonstrate how such molecules, which are homonuclear, form substantially large permanent electric dipole moments. A corollary benefit of such strong hybridisation is the realisation of high angular momentum degenerate Rydberg molecules (so-called trilobite molecules) with standard photoassociation techniques. We show that ultracold polar molecules pinned in an optical lattice can be used to access a variety of exotic spin models, including the Kitaev honeycomb model. Treating each molecule as a rigid rotor, we use DC electric and microwave fields to define superpositions of rotational levels as effective spin degrees of freedom, while dipole-dipole interactions give rise to interactions between the spins. In particular, we show that, with sufficient microwave control, the interaction between two spins can be written as a sum of five independently controllable Hamiltonian terms proportional to the five rank-2 spherical harmonics Y2,q(θ, Ø), where (θ, Ø) are the spherical coordinates of the vector connecting the two molecules. To demonstrate the potential of this approach beyond the simplest examples studied in [S.R. Manmana et al., Phys. Rev. B. 87, 081106 (2013)], we focus on the realisation of the Kitaev honeycomb model, which can support exotic non-Abelian anyonic excitations. We present an architecture for the quantum simulation of many-body spin interactions based on ultracold polar molecules trapped in optical lattices. Our approach employs digital quantum simulation, i.e. the dynamics of the simulated system is reproduced by the quantum simulator in a stroboscopic pattern, and allows to simulate both coherent and dissipative dynamics. We discuss the realisation of Kitaev's toric code Hamiltonian, a paradigmatic model involving four-body interactions, and analyse the requirements for an experimental implementation. The goal of the present article is to review the major developments that have led to the current understanding of molecule-field interactions and experimental methods for manipulating molecules with electromagnetic fields. Molecule-field interactions are at the core of several, seemingly distinct areas of molecular physics. This is reflected in the organisation of this article, which includes sections on field control of molecular beams, external field traps for cold molecules, control of molecular orientation and molecular alignment, manipulation of molecules by non-conservative forces, ultracold molecules and ultracold chemistry, controlled many-body phenomena, entanglement of molecules and dipole arrays, and stability of molecular systems in high-frequency super-intense laser fields. We determine trapping conditions for ultracold polar molecules, where pairs of internal states experience identical trapping potentials. Such conditions could ensure that detrimental effects of inevitable inhomogeneities across an ultracold sample are significantly reduced. In particular, we investigate the internal rovibronic and hyperfine quantum states of ultracold fermionic ground-state 40K87Rb polar molecules, when static magnetic, static electric and trapping laser fields are simultaneously applied. Understanding the effect of changing the relative orientation or polarisation of these three fields is of crucial importance for the creation of decoherence-free subspaces built from two or more rovibronic states. Moreover, we evaluate the induced dipole moment of the molecule in the presence of these fields, which will allow control of interactions between molecules in different sites of an optical lattice, and study the influence of the interaction anisotropy on the ability to entangle polar molecules. The high-resolution rovibronic spectroscopies of cold and ultracold molecules (e.g. supersonic molecular beam excitation spectra (MB), photoassociation spectra of ultracold atoms (PA), resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization spectra (REMPI), stimulated Raman transfer (SRT) spectra) are of major current interest. This manuscript summarizes the significant level of understanding of these various spectroscopies, enabled by using simple graphical and semiclassical ideas and shortcuts. Physical realizations of these spectroscopies will be illustrated using the alkali metal diatomic molecules, both homonuclear (e.g. Rb2) and heteronuclear (e.g. KRb). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a low-energy study of the vibrational excitation cross section of 50 layers of CO molecules on graphite at 23 K using the electron energy loss spectroscopy technique. The vibrational excitation cross section or the excitation curve is presented for two different scattering angles. The results show an energy dependence of the vibrational excitation cross section, at both angles, which indicates the formation of negative ion resonance in this adsorbed phase of CO on graphite. The data show an oscillatory structure in the region between 0.5 and 3 eV that is associated with the excitation of the 2Π state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The recent development of a range of new methods for producing samples of gas-phase molecules that are translationally cold ( [image omitted] K) or ultracold ( [image omitted] mK) is driving efforts to study reactive and inelastic collisional processes in these temperature regimes. In this review article the new methods for cold/ultracold molecule production are reviewed in the context of their potential or current use in collisional studies and progress in the application of these methods is highlighted. In these sub-Kelvin temperature ranges, where the de Broglie wavelength is long compared with molecular dimensions, quantum effects may play a crucial role in the collision dynamics. Reactions with no potential energy barrier are of greatest importance, and this review article summarizes some of the principal theoretical approaches to understanding quantum effects in these barrierless processes. Obtaining ultracold samples of dipolar molecules is a current challenge which requires an accurate knowledge of their electronic properties to guide the ongoing experiments. In this paper, we calculate permanent dipole moments and transition dipole moments for excited states for alkali dimers NaK, NaRb and NaCs using a standard quantum chemistry approach based on pseudopotentials for atomic core representation, Gaussian basis sets, and effective terms for core polarization effects. We provide an extensive set of data concerning transitions among the first seven molecular states of each symmetry 1Σ+, 3Σ+, 1Π, 3Π. The accuracy of our results is generally improved compared to previous similar calculations on NaK, while they are found to be in good agreement with the few NaRb states calculated with other methods.
