George Bush is not the beginning of something new in America, he is the end of one more round in the ongoing drama of America's struggle with itself to face directly into the meaning--and consequence--of something that cuts deeper than class interests.

With some major victories and a new school year dawning, the academic labor movement is revved up. In addition to graduate student struggles, the drive to organize adjunct professors--academia's equivalent of temp workers-continues to gain momentum. In February, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) at Rutgers University won a new contract, including a healthy pay increase. At the same time, the Illinois Education Association successfully organized adjuncts at Columbia College in Chicago. The AAUP, the Alaska Public Employees Association and the American Federation of Teachers formed "United Academic Adjuncts" and won the right to bargain for about 1,000 part-timers at the University of Alaska. This increased use of traditional unionism and collective bargaining puts the lie to the tired argument that white-collar types--especially pointy-headed intellectuals--won't go for unions. The struggles of adjuncts don't just speak to issues of higher education but also to the future of the U.S. labor movement, it's not going to be steelworkers or factory employees out there on the strike lines for much longer.

A few years ago the author of this article visited a maximum security prison in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania. Waynesburg is a former mining and farming community that, having fallen on hard times, lobbied for and received the booming economic opportunity embodied in a nice new state-of-the-art correctional facility. On the experience of that visit the author comments that the prison expansion is the fastest-growing industry in the public sector of the American economy. The U.S. has the highest prison population in the world and teachers and childcare providers are among the lowest paid and least respected of any industrialized nation.

Black pathology is big business. Two-thirds of teenage mothers are white, two-thirds of welfare recipients are white and white youth commit most of the crime in this country. Yet in the popular imagination blacks are blamed for all the criminal activities. Now that network news shows have become "profit centers," news producers have found a lucrative market in exhibiting black pathology, while coverage of pathologies such as drug addiction, child abuse, spousal battering and crime among whites and their "model minorities" is negligible. When it comes to singling out blacks as the cause of America's social problems, National Broadcasting Company and Cable News Network are the worst offenders.
