Competitive information diffusion on large-scale social networks reveals fundamental characteristics of rumor contagions and has profound influence on public opinion formation. There has been growing interest in exploring dynamical mechanisms of the competing evolutions recently. Nevertheless, the impacts of homogeneity trend, which determines powerful collective human behaviors, remains unclear. In this paper, we incorporate homogeneity trend into a modified competitive ignorant-spreader-ignorant rumor diffusion model with generalized population preference. Using microscopic Markov chain approach, we first derive the phase diagram of competing diffusion results on Erdös–Rényi graph and examine how competitive information spreads and evolves on social networks. We then explore the detailed effects of homogeneity trend, which is modeled by a rewiring mechanism. Results show that larger homogeneity trend promotes the formation of polarized ‘echo chambers’ and protects the disadvantaged information from extinction, which further changes or even reverses the evolutionary advantage, namely, the difference of stable proportions of the competitive information. However, the reversals may happen only when the initially disadvantaged information has stronger transmission ability, owning diffusion advantage over the other one. Our framework provides profound insight into competing dynamics with homogeneity trend, which may pave ways for further controlling misinformation and guiding public belief systems. Self-propelled particulate systems manifest certain collective behavior of living matter, which have been the subject of intense research over the past decades. One of the elegant methods for realizing such active motions is by means of custom synthesized Janus particles suspended in a catalytic medium that can be triggered upon illumination by ultraviolet light. In this work, the evolution of the particle dynamics from passive diffusive to active ballistic behavior upon light illumination was probed by multispeckle x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS). This technique enables not only studying the emergence of active motions in three dimensions (3D) but also deciphering different contributions to the overall dynamics. Using a combination of homodyne and heterodyne analysis, the ensemble averaged mean velocity, velocity fluctuations and diffusion coefficient of particles were determined in the thermodynamic limit. Results revealed a gradual transition from diffusive to ballistic dynamics with systematic increase of the catalytic activity. At the intermediate region, the dynamics is dominated by Gaussian velocity fluctuations and an enhanced relaxation rate with a weaker wave vector dependence similar to superdiffusive behavior. For the highest activity, the dynamics became purely ballistic with Lorentzian-like distribution of velocity fluctuations. Presented results demonstrate that different aspects of active dynamics can be investigated in 3D over a broad range of PĂ©clet numbers and other control parameters by means of multispeckle XPCS. Swarmalators are entities with the simultaneous presence of swarming and synchronization that reveal emergent collective behavior due to the fascinating bidirectional interplay between phase and spatial dynamics. Although different coupling topologies have already been considered, here we introduce time-varying competitive phase interaction among swarmalators where the underlying connectivity for attractive and repulsive coupling varies depending on the vision (sensing) radius. Apart from investigating some fundamental properties like conservation of center of position and collision avoidance, we also scrutinize the cases of extreme limits of vision radius. The concurrence of attractiveâ€"repulsive competitive phase coupling allows the exploration of diverse asymptotic states, like static Ď€, and mixed phase wave states, and we explore the feasible routes of those states through a detailed numerical analysis. In sole presence of attractive local coupling, we reveal the occurrence of static cluster synchronization where the number of clusters depends crucially on the initial distribution of positions and phases of each swarmalator. In addition, we analytically calculate the sufficient condition for the emergence of the static synchronization state. We further report the appearance of the static ring phase wave state and evaluate its radius theoretically. In cross-domain scenarios, the simultaneous presence of multiple sensing delays exerts a profound influence on collective behavior. Motivated by this, our paper presents a system based on self-propelled particles that consists of two swarms containing two intra-swarm sensing delays and an inter-swarm sensing delay. Three state emerges from the system, namely translating state, ring state, and rotating state. Employing mean field approximation and bifurcation analysis, we theoretically examine the parameter space’s boundaries that govern these three states. Our detailed findings emphasize that within the translating and rotating states, variations in the two intra-swarm delays can lead to the separation of the two swarms. Meanwhile, the extent of separation is influenced by the inter-swarm delay. Finally, we conduct numerical simulations to validate the accuracy of our theoretical derivations.

We investigate how collective behaviors of vibrations such as cooperativity and interference can enhance energy transfer in a nontrivial way, focusing on an example of a donor–bridge–acceptor trimeric chromophore system coupled to two vibrational degrees of freedom. Employing parameters selected to provide an overall uphill energy transfer from donor to acceptor, we use numerical calculations of dynamics in a coupled exciton–vibration basis, together with perturbation-based analytics and calculation of vibronic spectra, to identify clear spectral features of single- and multi-phonon vibrationally-assisted energy transfer (VAET) dynamics, where the latter include up to six-phonon contributions. We identify signatures of vibrational cooperation and interference that provide enhancement of energy transfer relative to that obtained from VAET with a single vibrational mode. We observe a phononic analogue of two-photon absorption, as well as a novel heteroexcitation mechanism in which a single phonon gives rise to simultaneous excitation of both the trimeric system and the vibrational degrees of freedom. The impacts of vibrations and of the one- and two-phonon VAET processes on the energy transfer are seen to be quite different in the weak and strong site–vibration coupling regimes. In the weak coupling regime, two-phonon processes dominate, whereas in the strong coupling regime up to six-phonon VAET processes can be induced. The VAET features are seen to be enhanced with increasing temperature and site–vibration coupling strength, and are reduced in the presence of dissipation. We analyze the dependence of these phenomena on the explicit form of the chromophore–vibration couplings, with comparison of VAET spectra for local and non-local couplings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Collective behavior, from murmurations to synchronized beating of heart cells, governs some of the most beautiful and important aspects of nature. Likewise, cooperation—the act of sacrificing personal benefits for the common good—is one of the pillars of social evolution, and it is the basis for the emergence of collective organized actions from single-cell organisms to modern human societies. Here we merge these two phenomena into a single model, considering an ensemble of networked oscillators, where each oscillator can be either a cooperator or a defector, and with only cooperators contributing to synchrony. At the same time, the value of the order parameter in the neighborhood of each oscillator is considered as an effective local temperature which determines the strategy updating procedure in the evolutionary game. The realization and study of arrays of interacting magnetic nanoislands, such as artificial spin ices, have reached mature levels of control that allow design and demonstration of exotic, collective behaviors not seen in natural materials. Advances in the direct manipulation of their local, binary moments also suggest a use as nanopatterned, interacting memory media, for computation within a magnetic memory. Recent experimental work has demonstrated the possibility of building logic gates from clusters of interacting magnetic domains, and yet the possibility of large scale integration of such gates can prove problematic even at the theoretical level. Here we introduce theoretically complete sets of logical gates, in principle realizable in an experiment, and we study the feasibility of their integration into tree-like circuits. By evaluating the fidelity control parameter between their collective behavior and their expected logic functionality we determine conditions for integration. Also, we test our numerical results against the presence of disorder in the couplings, showing that the design gate structure is robust to small coupling perturbations, and thus possibly to small imperfections in the fabrication of the islands. We have constructed a microfabricated circular corral for bacteria made of rings of concentric funnels which channel motile bacteria outwards via non-hydrodynamic interactions with the funnel walls. Initially bacteria do move rapidly outwards to the periphery of the corral. At the edge, nano-slits allow for the transport of nutrients into the device while keeping the bacteria from escaping. After a period of time in which the bacteria increase their cell density in this perimeter region, they are then able to defeat the physical constrains of the funnels by launching back-propagating collective waves. We present the basic data and some nonlinear modeling which can explain how bacterial population waves propagate through a physical funnel, and discuss possible biological implications. The Dicke model—a paradigmatic example of superradiance in quantum optics—describes an ensemble of atoms which are collectively coupled to a leaky cavity mode. As a result of the cooperative nature of these interactions, the system’s dynamics is captured by the behavior of a single mean-field, collective spin. In this mean-field limit, it has recently been shown that the interplay between photon losses and periodic driving of light–matter coupling can lead to time-crystalline-like behavior of the collective spin (Gong et al 2018 Phys. Rev. Lett.120 040404). In this work, we investigate whether such a Dicke time crystal (TC) is stable to perturbations that explicitly break the mean-field solvability of the conventional Dicke model. In particular, we consider the addition of short-range interactions between the atoms which breaks the collective coupling and leads to complex many-body dynamics. In this context, the interplay between periodic driving, dissipation and interactions yields a rich set of dynamical responses, including long-lived and metastable Dicke-TCs, where losses can cool down the many-body heating resulting from the continuous pump of energy from the periodic drive. Specifically, when the additional short-range interactions are ferromagnetic, we observe time crystalline behavior at non-perturbative values of the coupling strength, suggesting the possible existence of stable dynamical order in a driven-dissipative quantum many-body system. We have implemented a time-dependent (dynamic) x-ray tomography of sedimenting micro-spheres suspended in water. To achieve phase contrast at high magnification we use the divergent and highly coherent beam emitted from an x-ray waveguide. Holograms are recorded with 5 ms acquisition time while the sample is rotated at 1 Hz, over a run of 40 s. We show that under these conditions, more than 20 000 individual particle trajectories can be tracked. The analysis of the trajectories shows apparent super-diffusive behavior due to collective flow patterns, as also further evidenced by plotting the temporal averaged spatial distribution of particle densities and velocities. Suspensions of swimming bacteria are known to self-organize into turbulent-like flows for sufficiently high density and nutrients concentration. This spectacular example of collective behavior, on which the survival of the colony itself is believed to rely, appears however impossible to control. In a recent experimental and computational study, Wioland et al (2016 New J.
