The reaction of CuCl with 4-vinylpyridine (4-VPY) under hydrothermal conditions affords a 2-D copper(I)−olefin luminescent coordination polymer, [Cu(4-VPYA)Cl]n (1), with an approximately molecular rectangular grid dimension of 10.576 × 7.322 Å.

The solvothermal reactions of 3-pyridylacrylic acid (3-HPYA) and 2-pyridylacrylic acid (2-HPYA) with Cu(CH3CN)4BF4 yield two novel highly stable copper(I)−olefin coordination polymers, [(3-PYA)Cu(I)]n (1) and {[(2-PYA)Cu(I)]·(H2O)}n (2), respectively. Both polymers display 2D layered structures and yellow fluorescent emission in the solid state.

Under hydrothermal conditions, the reaction of vanillic acid with trimethyltin chloride gives rise to a novel 2D rhombohedral grid, {([Me2Sn(VA)0.5]2O)2·2H2O}n (1), with a tetraorganodistannoxane as corner unit.

4-Vinylbenzylcinchonidinium chloride ([VB-N-CIN]Cl; 1), prepared from the corresponding cinchona alkaloid and 4-vinylbenzyl chloride in refluxing acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide, solvothermally reacts with Cu^ICl to afford the unprecedented 2D homochiral copper(I)−olefin coordination polymer Cu5Cl6(VB-N-CIN)2·C2H5OH (2·EtOH) with a 2D layered network. A preliminary enantioseparation investigation shows that the 2D layered network in 2 is capable of selectively intercalating (R)-2-butanol.

Solvothermal reactions of quinine with Cu^ICl or Cu^IBr yield the two highly stable homochiral copper(I)−olefin coordination polymers Cu8Cl10(H-quinine)2 (1) and Cu8Br10(H-quinine)2 (2), respectively, in which both 1 and 2 are 2D layered networks and are isostructural. The electric hysteresis loop of 1 clearly shows it displays a typical ferroelectric behavior with a remanent polarization (Pr) of ca. 0.12 μC cm^-2.
