This paper proposes an integrated framework for discussing issues related to regional concentration, sectorial specialization and overall localization by considering these concepts as a row‐column association– or non‐independence– in a two‐way contingency table 'regions × sectors'. This is the approach of stochastic independence, in which the degree of concentration, or of specialization, is measured by discrepancies among distributions: between profiles and a uniform distribution for absolute concepts; between profiles and the corresponding marginal distribution for relative concepts; or between the joint distribution and the product of the marginal distributions for overall localization. This paper discusses the benefits of this integrating approach, particularly for the practitioner facing a multifaceted literature. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the Remi-Irpet macroeconometric multisectoral model. The Remi-Irpet, based on an input-output core structure, has its most distinctive feature in the modelling of vertical pecuniary externalities à la Fujita-Krugman-Venables which represents the core dynamization mechanism. Our contribution first presents the theoretical background of the model. Second, we present a simulation exercise performed through the model in which we evaluate the structural impact of incoming FDIs for Tuscany. The impact analysis is defined in terms of (i) change in the overall productive capacity and (ii) medium-term changes in prices and productivity, driven by the changes in the accessibility to labour and intermediate inputs. The paper presents the newly developed dynamic spatial general equilibrium model of European Commission, RHOMOLO, and proposes its future extensions. The model incorporates several elements from economic geography in a novel and theoretically consistent way. It describes the location choice of different types of agents and captures the interplay between agglomeration and dispersion forces in determining the spatial equilibrium. The model is also dynamic as it allows for the accumulation of factors of production, human capital and technology. This makes RHOMOLO particularly suited for simulating policy scenario related to the EU cohesion policy and for the analysis of its impact on the regions and the Member States of the union. The relationship between collaboration, geography and innovation has been analysed in economic geography. However, little is known from a social‐network perspective about whether different geographical levels of embeddedness may determine the way networks affect innovation. To address this issue, we compare the effects of regional vs. country‐level Spanish networks on future patenting. If we consider the country‐wide network, our statistical analysis reproduces the findings of the previous literature. However, negative effects prevail at the regional level, while the influence seems to be rather positive at the country level. We thus conclude that the embeddedness at different geographical scales exerts differing influence on innovation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study uses Ripley's K‐function to examine the diversity in cross‐region labor mobility under various border effects from heterogeneous policies. Based on manufacturing labour data for Chinese cities, we emphasize the importance of border effects in the formation of regional integration with a Ripley's K‐function analysis. The statistical measures indicate that the amount of labour mobility involves distance‐decay effects of the border. However, the variety in the distance‐decay of the border effects differs considerably between each pair of adjacent regions. The shift‐share analysis (SSA) of regional employment growth disparities aims at disentangling the effects of regional differences in industry mix and industrial competitiveness. Yet, the spatial concentration of industry is a blindspot of this approach. We generalize the SSA to encompass this salient feature of the economic geography. Besides, industry emergence and catastrophic growth events—booming or collapsing industries—are integrated in our framework. This novel method is applied to study regional disparities in manufacturing employment growth in France in a dynamic way over a 22‐year period at a fine geographical level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This empirical study analyzes university‐business co‐operation (UBC) from a distance‐based perspective. Focusing on the UK's 48 largest research universities, we collected data from author affiliate addresses in 2008–2017 university‐business research publications (UBRPs). The spatial proximity between university and its business partners listed in these co‐authored research publications concerns three main distance zones: "local" (0–99 km); "regional" (100–499 km); "global" (500 km or more). The annual UBRP trends reveal a tendency towards UBC globalization. Several universities show signs of UBC glocalization, where the numbers of their global UBRPs have increased more rapidly than local UBRPs. Four common factors largely determine the UBRP quantities, irrespective of the zone: business sector R&D‐intensity in the university's local geographical area; university's research size; university's high‐end international citation impact; presence of university researchers with work experience in the business sector. Firm financing literature has been dominated by a relatively ‘undersocialized’ and ‘aspatial’ view. We approach this gap by applying a social capital and economic geography informed lens to financial transactions. We explore if and how the early growth performance of venture capital backed organizations varies with the structural and physical location of their investors in syndication networks. Drawing on longitudinal data of Belgian firms and their venture capital investors, it is demonstrated that inter‐firm relational ties and, especially cross‐border linkages expand organizational outcome. In that, we show that not only social relations shape financial activity, but that also spatial patterns of co‐investment networks deserve notice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: In this study we estimate space‐time impacts of the embeddedness in R&D networks on regional knowledge production using a dynamic spatial panel data model with non‐linear effects for 229 European NUTS 2 regions in the period 1998–2010. Embeddedness refers to the positioning in networks where nodes represent regions that are linked by joint R&D projects funded by EU Framework Programmes. We find evidence that increasing embeddedness in EU funded R&D networks leads to positive immediate impacts on regional knowledge production, and that regions with lower levels of own knowledge endowments more likely exploit the positive effects. However, the long‐term impacts of a region's embeddedness in these R&D networks are comparatively small. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A standard result on international capital income taxation is that applying the residence principle does not affect industrial location and is therefore more efficient than applying the source principle. However, many countries do in fact apply the source principle. We argue that in a new economic geography framework the standard result needs to be qualified: the size of the market is crucial for industry location and it is changed by taxation and by public expenditures; we show that - for the high tax region - this effect dampens capital losses under the source principle and causes them under the residence principle. The sharp difference between the two taxation principles blurs and, unsurprisingly, both principles are found in taxation laws. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
