In this paper, a coaxial virtual cathode oscillator (vircator) is simulated by the particle-in-cell method for the terahertz (THz) band. THz waves have many applications in human life, and many researchers work on related technologies, especially on THz sources like vacuum electronic devices (VEDs). A vircator is a kind of VED that is usually operated at a few GHz, but in this study, a coaxial vircator is proposed as a THz source for the first time. By adding a reflector and center rod to the base coaxial configuration and optimizing the parameters, an output power of about 29 W is achieved at 0.25 THz with the dominant mode of TM01. Working voltage and current are 26 kV and 100 mA, respectively. In addition, to indicate the scalability of the device, two other designs for higher and lower frequencies are simulated. In this paper, a novel K/Ka dual-band input coupler for the gyrotron traveling wave tube is theoretically and experimentally investigated. This input coupler mainly consists of three modules, a Y-type power division coupler, a coaxial cavity coupler, and a Bragg reflector. When the dual-band coupler operates in K-band, the Y-type coupler couples out the TE11 mode, and simulation results show the −1 dB bandwidth is 3.3 GHz in the frequency range of 17.9–21.2 GHz. In Ka-band, the TE21 mode coupled out by the coaxial cavity coupler, the −1 dB bandwidth is 3.5 GHz within 33.7–37.2 GHz, and the reflection coefficient keeps a pretty low level. The prototype was fabricated and measured to further verify the designed dual-band input coupler's performance. The back-to-back cold test results show that the −3 dB bandwidth of the K-band is about 2.5 GHz, and the −3 dB bandwidth of the Ka-band is 2.44 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Preserving the quality of a positron beam in a plasma-based accelerator, where a wakefield suitable for positron transport and acceleration is generated by means of an electron filament, is challenging. This is due to the nature of the wakefields, characterized by focusing fields that vary nonlinearly in the transverse direction, and by accelerating fields that are non-uniform. These fields also change slice-by-slice along the beam. Maintaining a high beam quality is pivotal for application of positron beams in a plasma-based collider. In this paper, we show that an initial background plasma temperature can help mitigate the positron beam quality degradation in plasma-based accelerators that rely on electron filaments. We show that temperature effects broaden the electron filament and smooth radially both the non-linear transverse and the non-uniform longitudinal wakefields. Magnetized liner inertial fusion (MagLIF) is a magneto-inertial-fusion concept that is studied on the 20-MA, 100-ns rise time Z Pulsed Power Facility at Sandia National Laboratories. Given the relative success of the platform, there is a wide interest in studying the scaled performance of this concept at a next-generation pulsed-power facility that may produce peak currents upward of 60 MA. An important aspect that requires more research is the instability dynamics of the imploding MagLIF liner, specifically how instabilities are initially seeded. It has been shown in magnetized 1-MA thin-foil liner Z-pinch implosion simulations that a Hall interchange instability (HII) effect [J. M. Woolstrum et al., Phys. Plasmas 29, 122701 (2022)] can provide an independent seeding mechanism for helical magneto-Rayleigh–Taylor instabilities. In this paper, we explore this instability at higher peak currents for MagLIF using 2D discontinuous Galerkin PERSEUS simulations, an extended magneto-hydrodynamics code [C. E. Seyler and M. R. Martin, Phys. Plasmas 18, 012703 (2011)], which includes Hall physics. Our simulations of scaled MagLIF loads show that the growth rate of the HII is invariant to the peak current, suggesting that studies at 20-MA are directly relevant to 60-MA class machines. For magnetic confinement fusion in tokamak plasmas, some of the limitations to the particle and energy confinement times are caused by turbulence and collisions between particles in toroidal geometry, which determine the "anomalous" and the neoclassical transport, respectively. Neoclassical effects are also responsible for the intrinsically generated bootstrap current, and only the self-consistent modeling of neoclassical and turbulent processes can ultimately give accurate predictive results. In this work, we focus on the implementation of neoclassical physics in the gyrokinetic code TRIMEG, which is a TRIangular MEsh-based Gyrokinetic code that can handle both the closed and open field line geometries of a divertor tokamak. We report on the implementation of a simplified Lorentz collision operator in TRIMEG. For comparison with neoclassical theory, the calculation of flux surface averages is necessary. Since the code uses an unstructured mesh, a procedure for calculating the flux surface averages of particle and energy fluxes and the bootstrap current is derived without relying on the poloidal coordinate, which is useful also for other simulations in unstructured meshes. With the newly implemented collision operator, we study electron transport and bootstrap current generation in a plasma with a finite density gradient but uniform temperature for various simplified and realistic geometries. Compared with neoclassical theory, good agreement is obtained for the large aspect ratio case regarding the particle and energy fluxes as well as the bootstrap current. However, some discrepancies are observed at moderate aspect ratio and for a case with the realistic geometry of the ASDEX Upgrade tokamak. These deviations can be explained by different treatments and approximations in theory and simulation. In this paper, we demonstrate the capability to calculate the electron transport and bootstrap current generation in TRIMEG, which will allow for the self-consistent inclusion of neoclassical effects in gyrokinetic simulations in the future. In this paper, we propose two random multilayered structures consisting of plasma layers with modulated sinusoidal densities. The first structure consists of equi-thickness plasma layers with random initial plasma densities. In the second suggested structure, the initial plasma densities of all layers are the same, while their thicknesses are randomly selected from a uniform distribution. It is demonstrated that, for both structures, Anderson localization enhances with an increase in the modulation factor. In addition, the localization length decreases with an increase in the disorder level due to the enhancement of multiscattering through the structure. For both TE and transverse magnetic polarizations, by increasing the incident angle, the frequency range at which localization occurs becomes broader. Furthermore, we find that the attenuation length decreases with an increase in the collision frequency because of absorption enhancement through the structure. Finally, by the introduction of randomness in both initial plasma density and thickness of plasma layers, stronger localization is obtained in some frequency ranges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the breakdown of two microstrip antennas through experiments and particle-in-cell simulations. The breakdown thresholds of a microstrip dipole antenna and a double-layer patch microstrip antenna are investigated experimentally and found to be 15.6 and 30.8 kW, respectively. Ablation is observed on the surface of the antennas, indicating that the local electric field is particularly intense. To further understand the breakdown process, the particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo collision methods are combined to investigate the inception and development of partial discharge on the surface of the antennas. Under the criterion of continuous electron density growth, the breakdown thresholds of the dipole and double-layer patch antennas are estimated to be 19.4 and 52.9 kW in our simulations. The simulation results are in reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements. In the microstrip dipole antenna, the plasma evolution of the partial discharge is initiated near the tip, while the electric field close to the tip is distorted and a positive streamer directed toward the tip is observed. Hybrid-VPIC is an extension of the open-source high-performance particle-in-cell (PIC) code VPIC incorporating hybrid kinetic ion/fluid electron solvers. This paper describes the models that are available in the code and gives an overview of applications of the code to space and laboratory plasma physics problems. Particular choices in how the hybrid solvers were implemented are documented for reference by users. A few solutions for handling numerical complications particular to hybrid codes are also described. Special emphasis is given to the computationally taxing problem of modeling mix in collisional high-energy-density regimes, for which more accurate electron fluid transport coefficients have been implemented for the first time in a hybrid PIC code. In the cold atmospheric plasma (CAP)-assisted cancer treatment, the increase in the concentration of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) produced by CAP is believed to be related to the overexpression of aquaporins (AQPs) on cancer cell membranes. In this paper, using classical molecular dynamics simulations, the transmembrane behavior of RNS and ROS on a pure phospholipid bilayer or a AQP1-phospholipid bilayer model was studied. The research shows that hydrophobic RNS tend to be transported through the bilayer of phospholipids. The overexpression of AQP1 can significantly improve the transmembrane efficiency of hydrophilic ROS. Our simulation fills the gap in the research for RNS-related molecular simulation and provides guidance for the precise targeting of cancer cells in CAP therapy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To study the physical mechanism of the separation between heavy and light species in the vacuum arc devices with deuteride cathodes, a three-fluid model based on magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory is established. In the model, different kinds of species are considered to be different kinds of fluids, and their physical parameters are calculated separately. Moreover, the distribution of arc current is calculated by the generalized Ohm's law, and the ionization and recombination of species are taken into account. In the paper, the two cases where the cathode is Zr or ZrD0.67 are simulated, respectively. The results show that in the case of ZrD0.67 cathode, the separation of light and heavy species is remarkable. Because of D's lighter mass and lower mass-to-charge ratio, the distribution of it is more uniform. In addition, the differences between species also lead to large differences in other physical characteristics, such as ion velocity, ion temperature, and so on. Notably, the desorption and ionization of deuterium lead to a decrease in plasma temperature. The self-generated magnetic field of the arc has an inhibitory effect on the expansion of each species, and it is more obvious for ions with lower mass-to-charge ratio. The simulation results are consistent with the experimental results. The theoretical analysis can provide theoretical guidance for the improvement of vacuum arc devices with composite or gas-saturated cathodes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pulse modulation in inductively coupled plasmas (ICPs) has been proven as an effective method not only to restrain the charging effect in etching trenches but also as a potential approach to ameliorate the plasma uniformity. In this paper, a two-dimensional fluid model is employed to systematically study the modulation of the radial uniformity in pulsed dual-antenna Ar ICPs. The inner four-turn coils are connected to a continuous wave at the current of 5.0 A, and the outer three-turn coils are pulse modulated at various duty cycles and currents. The results indicate that when the outer coil current is fixed at 7.0 A, the electron density always shows an off-center distribution during the active-glow period when the duty cycle increases from 20% to 60%, due to the stronger electric field induced by the higher outer coil current. Although the ionization mainly happens at the reactor center during the after-glow period, the electron density distribution evolves from a center-high profile to a rather uniform distribution as duty cycle increases. Under the combined influence, the time-averaged electron density over one pulse period shifts from center-high over uniform to edge-high. When the pulse duty cycle is fixed at 50%, the time-averaged electron density distribution shifts from a center-high profile over uniform to an edge-high profile, as the outer coil current increases from 5.7 to 7.7 A. Surface micro-discharge (SMD) has received growing interest for its great prospect in various emerging applications spanning the fields of biomedicine, manufacturing, and agriculture. Discharge properties and the nature of the chemical species are heavily dependent on the electrode configuration. However, insight into the effect of electrode configuration on SMD remains scarce. This paper reports on the effect of the geometry of the powered planar electrode on the dynamic evolution of plasma in a helium SMD array at atmospheric pressure. The observed symmetric and asymmetric luminous patterns correspond to odd and even numbered current pulses in negative half-cycle, respectively. When the powered electrode is not covering the full area of the mesh unit of the grounded electrode, the luminous pattern dominated by the negative pattern consists of three parts: the distinct luminous channel, the flabelliform luminous area, and the discontinuous cambered channels under the incomplete powered electrode condition. The distinct luminous channel is ascribed to the propagation of the bullet-like plasma volume originated at the middle part of the mesh side before merging with other plasmas. The merging plasma forms a cambered front and continuous to propagate, leading to the formation of a flabelliform area. The discontinuous cambered channels result from the propagation of bullets ignited at the mesh corners, especially the slide of luminous area with maximum emission intensity along the streamer. Moreover, the mesh element without a powered electrode can also initiate breakdown due to the sufficiently high voltage and the propagation of surface charges, suggesting that the grounded mesh electrode should be extended to avoid redundant discharges. The interaction of a high-intensity ultrashort laser pulse with a few micrometers-thick hydrocarbon target is known to accelerate protons/ions to multi-MeV, on the rear side of the target, via the mechanism of target normal sheath acceleration. Micro-structuring the target front is one of the promising approaches to enhance the cutoff energy as well as to reduce the divergence of accelerated protons/ions. In this paper, the interaction of a normally incident intense laser pulse with targets having single micrometer-sized grooves, at their front side, of semi-circular, triangular, and rectangular shapes has been studied by using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. It is observed that as compared to a flat target for targets with a rectangular groove at the front side the focused hot electron beam at the rear side results in an approximately fourfold increase in the cutoff energy of accelerated protons. For triangular and semi-circular groove targets, the cutoff energy remains comparatively lower (higher than the flat target though). The angular divergence of the accelerated protons/ions is also found to be relatively much lower in the case of a rectangular groove. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The non-local heat transport of hot electrons during high-intensity laser interaction with plasmas can preheat the fuel and limit the heat flow in inertial confinement fusion. It increases the entropy of the fuel and decreases the final compression. In this paper, the non-local electron transport model that is based on the improved Schurtz–Nicolaï–Busquet (SNB) algorithm has been embedded into the radiation hydrodynamic code and is benchmarked with two classical non-local transport cases. Then, we studied a 2ω laser ablating a CH target by using the non-local module. It is found that the non-local effect becomes significant when the laser intensity is above 1 × 10 14 W / cm 2 . The mass ablation rate from the SNB model is increased compared to that of the flux-limited model due to the lower coronal plasma temperature. This non-local model has a better agreement with the experimental results compared to that of the flux-limited model. The non-local transport is strongly dependent on the laser frequency, and the thresholds that the non-local transport should be considered are obtained for lasers of different frequencies. The appropriate flux-limiters that should be employed in the flux-limited model for different lasers are also presented. On electron kinetic scales, ions and electrons decouple, and electron velocity shear on electron inertial length ∼ d e can trigger electromagnetic (EM) electron Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (EKHI). In this paper, we present an analytic study of EM EKHI in an inviscid collisionless plasma with a step-function electron shear flow. We show that in incompressible collisionless plasma, the ideal electron frozen-in condition E + v e × B / c = 0 must be broken for the EM EKHI to occur. In a step-function electron shear flow, the ideal electron frozen-in condition is replaced by magnetic flux conservation, i.e., ∇ × (E + v e × B / c) = 0 , resulting in a dispersion relation similar to that of the standard ideal and incompressible magnetohydrodynamics KHI. The magnetic field parallel to the electron streaming suppresses the EM EKHI due to magnetic tension. The threshold for the EM mode of the EKHI is (k · Δ U e) 2 > n e 1 + n e 2 n e 1 n e 2 [ n e 1 (v A e 1 · k) 2 + n e 2 (v A e 2 · k) 2 ] , where v A e = B / (4 π m e n e) 1 / 2 , Δ U e , and ne are the electron streaming velocity shear and densities, respectively. Triggered ion-acoustic waves are a pair of coupled waves observed in the previously unexplored plasma regime near the Sun. They may be capable of producing important effects on the solar wind. Because this wave mode has not been observed or studied previously and it is not fully understood, the issue of whether it has a natural origin or is an instrumental artifact can be raised. This paper discusses this issue by examining 13 features of the data such as whether the triggered ion-acoustic waves are electrostatic, whether they are both narrow-band, whether they satisfy the requirement that the electric field is parallel to the k-vector, whether the phase difference between the electric field and the density fluctuations is 90°, whether the two waves have the same phase velocity as they must if they are coupled, whether the phase velocity is that of an ion-acoustic wave, whether they are associated with other parameters such as electron heating, whether the electric field instrument otherwise performed as expected, etc. The conclusion reached from these analyses is that triggered ion-acoustic waves are highly likely to have a natural origin although the possibility that they are artifacts unrelated to processes occurring in the natural plasma cannot be eliminated. Quasi electrostatic fluctuations in the upper-hybrid frequency range are commonly detected in the planetary magnetospheric environment. The origin of such phenomena may relate to the instability driven by a loss-cone feature associated with the electrons populating the dipole-like magnetic field. The present paper carries out a one-dimensional electrostatic particle-in-cell simulation accompanied by a reduced quasilinear kinetic theoretical analysis to investigate the dynamics of the upper-hybrid mode instability driven by an initial ring electron distribution function, which is a form of loss-cone distribution. A favorable comparison is found between the two approaches, which shows that the reduced quasilinear theory, which is grounded in the concept of a model of the particle distribution function that is assumed to maintain a fixed mathematical form except that the macroscopic parameters that define the distribution are allowed to evolve in time, can be an effective tool in the study of plasma instabilities, especially if it is guided by and validated against the more rigorous simulation result. This paper presents numerical characterization of a recently developed compact soft x-ray source based on a nanosecond electric discharge in a gas-filled capillary. When operated in CO2 and Ar:He mixture, the source is capable of producing line radiation in wavelength ranges corresponding to the carbon (4.5–5.0 nm) and water (2.3–4.4 nm) transparency windows. Experimentally obtained trends in emission properties are analyzed using a two-temperature magnetohydrodynamic model, which utilizes mean ion approximation for calculation of basic properties of multicomponent plasma. Spatiotemporal distributions of plasma parameters were obtained for a range of gas pressures corresponding to the studied experimental conditions of the soft x-ray source. Peak values of electron density and electron temperature were analyzed and used to interpret the experimentally obtained trends in dependence of the source operation on inlet gas pressure. Advanced aneutronic fusion fuels such as proton-Boron11 tend to require much higher temperatures than conventional fuels like deuterium–tritium. For electrons, the bulk plasma temperature can approach a substantial fraction of the rest mass. In a mirror confinement system, where the electrons are confined by an ambipolar potential of at least five electron temperatures, the tail electrons which can escape the potential are fully relativistic, which must be taken into account in calculating their confinement. In this paper, simple estimates are employed to extend the scaling of the confinement time into the relativistic regime. By asymptotically matching this scaling to known solutions in the non-relativistic limit, accurate forms for the confinement time (and thus, the ambipolar potential) are obtained. These forms are verified using finite-element-based Fokker–Planck simulations over a wide range of parameters. Comparing relativistic and nonrelativistic mirror-confined plasmas with the same ratio of confining potential | e ϕ | to electron temperature Te and the same mirror ratio R, the net result is a decrease in the confinement time due to relativistic effects by a factor of S ≡ (1 + 15 T e / 8 m e c 2) / (1 + 2 | e ϕ | / m e c 2). The paper presents computer simulation studies of burst injection of carbon and tungsten dust particles in DIII-D-like edge plasmas. The injection causes a large transient influx of the low- and high-Z impurities associated with the dust ablation in the plasmas. The dust transport and the effects of the ablated impurities on the edge plasma dynamics in a modern mid-size tokamak geometry are investigated for low- and high-power plasma discharge conditions. In this paper, a tomography approach aiming at reconstructing a phase-space structure is proposed. For the phase-space resolved diagnostic system, a signal must be decomposed in real-space, velocity-space, and time; therefore, it is challenging to obtain a sufficiently high signal intensity in a single detector bin. To overcome this difficulty, three different sets of data having different integration directions in real-space, velocity-space, and time are simultaneously used, and a reconstruction of the original structure in the phase-space is attempted by a tomographic manner. The proposed method is demonstrated using a synthetic dataset in the actual diagnostic setup in the Large Helical Device. Time evolution of a phase-space perturbation induced by the Landau damping, which is caused by energetic particle-driven magnetohydrodynamic bursts, is successfully reconstructed by this method. The self-magnetic pinch (SMP) diode is a type of radiographic diode used to generate an intense electron beam for radiographic applications. At Sandia National Laboratories, SMP was the diode load for the six-cavity radiographic integrated test stand inductive voltage adder (IVA) driver operated in a magnetically insulated transmission line (MITL). The MITL contributes a flow current in addition to the current generated within the diode itself. Extensive experiments with a MITL of 40 Ω load impedance [T. J. Renk et al., Phys. Plasmas 29, 023105 (2022)] indicate that the additional flow current leads to results similar to what might be expected from a conventional high-voltage interface driver, where flow current is not present. However, when the MITL flow impedance was increased to 80 Ω, qualitatively different diode behavior was observed. This includes large retrapping waves suggestive of an initial coupling to low impedance as well as diode current decreasing with time even as the total current does not. A key observation is that the driver generates total current (flow + diode) consistent with the flow impedance of the MITL used. The case is made in this paper that the 80 Ω MITL experiments detailed here can only be understood when the IVA-MITL-SMP diode is considered as a total system. The constraint of fixed total current plus the relatively high flow impedance limits the ability of the diode (whether SMP or other type) to act as an independent load. An unexpected new result is that in tracking the behavior of the electron strike angle on the converter as a function of time, we observed that the conventional cIVx "Radiographic" radiation scaling (where x ∼ 2.2) begins to break down for voltages above 8 MV, and cubic scaling is required to recover accurate angle tracking. Radiographic diodes focus on an intense electron beam to a small spot size to minimize the source area of energetic photons for radiographic interrogation. The self-magnetic pinch (SMP) diode has been developed as such a source and operated as a load for the six-cavity radiographic integrated test stand (RITS-6) inductive voltage adder driver. While experiments support the generally accepted conclusion that a 1:1 aspect diode (cathode diameter equals anode–cathode gap) delivers optimum SMP performance, such experiments also show that reducing the cathode diameter, while reducing spot size, also results in reduced radiation dose, by as much as 50%, and degraded shot reproducibility. Analysis of the effective electron impingement angle on the anode converter with time made possible by a newly developed dose-rate array diagnostic indicates that fast-developing oscillations of the angle are correlated with early termination of the radiation pulse on many of the smaller-diameter SMP shots. This behavior as a function of relative cathode size persists through experiments with output voltages and currents up to 11.5 MV and 225 kA, respectively, and with spot sizes below approximately few millimeters. Since simulations to date have not predicted such oscillatory behavior, considerable discussion of the angle behavior of SMP shots is made to lend credence to the inference. There is clear anecdotal evidence that DC heating of the SMP diode region leads to stabilization of this oscillatory behavior. This paper provides a new insight into the fundamentals of plasma medicine: The definition of "plasma dose." Based on the dominant role of reactive oxygen nitrogen species (RONS) in plasma biological effects, we first propose the equivalent total oxidation potential (ETOP) as the definition of plasma dose. The ETOP includes three parts: the item H, which is the ETOP of the RONS generated by plasma; the item T, which is associated with the reactive agents unrelated to RONS, such as UV/vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) emission of plasma; and the item f(H,T), which is related to the synergistic effects between H and T factors. To evaluate the feasibility of the ETOP as a plasma dose, the bacterial reduction factor (BRF), which is the log reduction of bacteria colony-forming units, is selected as the indicator of the plasma biological effect. A model establishing the relationship between the ETOP and BRF is presented. For the first try of this paper, a linear relationship between the lgETOP and BRF is assumed. The model is initially validated by the published data from the literature. Further simulation and experiment are also conducted, and the positive correlation between the ETOPs and BRFs in the model again suggests that the ETOP could be a reasonable solution as the plasma dose. Quantum plasmas are an important topic in astrophysics and high pressure laboratory physics for more than 50 years. In addition, many condensed matter systems, including the electron gas in metals, metallic nanoparticles, or electron-hole systems in semiconductors and heterostructures, exhibit—to some extent—plasmalike behavior. Among the key theoretical approaches that have been applied to these systems are quantum kinetic theory, Green function theory, quantum Monte Carlo, semiclassical and quantum molecular dynamics, and more recently, density functional theory simulations. These activities are in close contact with the experiments and have firmly established themselves in the fields of plasma physics, astrophysics, and condensed matter physics. About two decades ago, a second branch of quantum plasma theory emerged that is based on a quantum fluid description and has attracted a substantial number of researchers. The focus of these studies has been on collective oscillations and linear and nonlinear waves in quantum plasmas. Even though these papers pretend to address the same physical systems as the more traditional papers mentioned above, the former appear to form a rather closed community that is largely isolated from the rest of the field. The quantum hydrodynamics (QHD) results have—with a few exceptions—not found application in astrophysics or in experiments in condensed matter physics. Moreover, these results practically did not have any impact on the former quantum plasma theory community. One reason is the unknown accuracy of the QHD for dense plasmas. In this paper, we present a novel derivation, starting from reduced density operators that clearly point to the deficiencies of QHD, and we outline possible improvements. It is also to be noted that some of the QHD results have attracted negative attention being criticized as unphysical. Examples include the prediction of "novel attractive forces" between protons in an equilibrium quantum plasma, the notion of "spinning quantum plasmas," or the new field of "quantum dusty plasmas." In the present article, we discuss the latter system in some detail because it is a particularly disturbing case of formal theoretical investigations that are detached from physical reality despite bold and unproven claims of importance for, e.g., dense astrophysical plasmas or microelectronics. We stress that these deficiencies are not a problem of QHD itself, which is a powerful and efficient method, but rather are due to ignorance of its properties and limitations. Multipactor is an avalanche multiplication of the number of electrons in radio-frequency devices due to secondary electron emission. One of the possible modes of this kind of discharge was studied in detail and was named “a ping-pong mode” in a publication by R. A. Kishek [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 035003 (2012) and Phys. Electron density is one of the most important parameters for characterizing plasma properties, so obtaining accurate electron density is a prerequisite for studying the interaction between plasma and the electromagnetic waves. This paper presents the effects of different electron densities on the electric field distribution of a microstrip antenna with a center frequency of 2.45 GHz. Then, on the basis of the integrated model of plasma and the microstrip antenna, the Bayesian regularization neural network (BRNN) is used to retrieve the electron density of inhomogeneous plasma. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach is evaluated and analyzed by comparison with Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) and Scaled Conjugate Gradient (SCG) neural networks. The results show that the BRNN provides better performance than LM and SCG neural networks to retrieve plasma electron density based on the electric field intensity at fewer spatial positions. The accurate distribution of the electron density of inhomogeneous plasma can be obtained using BRNN. In addition, the greater the range variation of electron density, the greater the relative inversion error. This study provides an important theoretical basis for the diagnosis of electron density for inhomogeneous plasma in experiments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pseudospark discharge is a special low pressure discharge and has been widely used in the gas switch and electron beam sources. From experiments, when the work pressure is relatively low, the electron beam current or loop current generated by a pseudospark discharge usually has two or more peaks, which has not been fully explained. In this paper, a single-gap pseudospark discharge model is established using 2D kinetic plasma simulation code VSim to study this phenomenon. According to the simulation results, when the anode voltage is 20 kV and the helium pressure is 100 Pa, the current has two peaks, which is similar to the experimental results, accompanied by the stepwise penetration of the virtual anode. This is mainly related to the formation and disappearance of the potential barrier in the cathode hole region. The formation of the potential barrier is caused by the consumption of ions at the cathode hole, and the disappearance is caused by the increase in electrons in the cathode cavity. By classifying the electrons, it is found that the increased electrons are generated by secondary emission caused by ion bombardment on the wall of the cathode. The simulation results also show that the stepwise penetration of the virtual anode can be suppressed or eliminated by increasing the working gas pressure, the secondary electron yield of the cathode material, or the trigger intensity. This paper presents a simple analysis of the fraction of blobs observed in the scrape-off layer of NSTX and calculates the correlation between this blob fraction and various plasma parameters. The measurements were made using the gas puff imaging (GPI) diagnostic on a database of 103 shots from 2010 with neutral beam power PNBI = 0–6 MW. The blob fraction ranged from fb = 0.1% to 4.8%, where fb is defined as the fraction of time the GPI signal was larger than three times its average value within 0–7.5 cm outside the separatrix. The blob fraction generally decreased with increasing neutral beam injection power and was lower on average in H-mode plasmas than Ohmic and L-mode plasmas. The blob fraction had its highest correlation with the measured poloidal turbulence velocity and its radial gradient just inside the separatrix. This is in part consistent with a model in which the blob generation rate increases with the poloidal velocity shear. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Due to the small charge-to-mass ratio of dust particles, it is often necessary to use large magnetic fields of B ≥ 1 T, in order to observe the influence of magnetic forces in laboratory dusty plasmas. However, when experiments are performed at high magnetic fields in capacitively coupled, radio frequency discharges used for these dusty plasma experiments, the plasma is often observed to form filamentary structures between the electrodes that are aligned to the external magnetic field which disrupt the uniformity of the plasma and adversely impact some of our dusty plasma experiments. Recent experiments performed in the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment device seek to identify and characterize these filamentary structures. This paper discusses the morphology of several distinct filamentary modes that are formed in low temperature argon plasmas. Three different spatial modes of filaments that appear to be strongly dependent on the magnetic field and neutral pressure are identified. There is strong evidence that each spatial mode has a threshold condition that is dependent on the ion Hall parameter. The criteria for the formation of the filaments are shown to be consistent with predictions of recent numerical simulations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper studied the plasma plume evolution process of a capillary discharge based pulsed plasma thruster. Time-resolved imaging and optical emission spectroscopy were applied to investigate the plume morphology and plasma species characteristics. It showed that ionized particles (mainly C II and F II) were accelerated early in the pulse and neutral particles (mainly C I and F I) later. An optical time-of-flight (OTOF) method was developed using a photodiode array combined with narrow bandpass filters. The equivalent streaming velocity of the plasma plume was evaluated with the OTOF technique. Measurements of individual species showed that both the ionized and the neutral species could be effectively accelerated by gasdynamic forces, and the ionized particles could reach a higher velocity. A Doppler shift measurement of the plasma plume was also performed to compare it with the findings from the OTOF method. The plasma plume streaming velocity of a thruster with a discharge energy of 5 J was measured and found to be (25.34 ± 0.17) km/s (OTOF) and (22.36 ± 4.02) km/s (Doppler shift). In addition, differences between the operation processes of the capillary discharge based pulsed plasma thruster and the electromagnetic pulsed plasma thruster were analyzed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a numerical simulation on the interaction between the double cathode spot craters in the vacuum arc is carried out. By establishing a double-cathode spot ablation model, the crater development process when two spots coexist is simulated, and the formation mechanism of cathode spot groups is analyzed. The simulation results show that the two cathode spots appearing on the flat electrode would squeeze each other to form a liquid metal ridge, which changed the ablation morphology of the cathode spots. When the double-spot arc craters appear simultaneously, the metal ridge will be squeezed into a straight line, otherwise, when the spots appear one after another, the liquid metal ridge will shift toward the side of the spot that appears first. The relative experimental results are adopted to compare with the simulation results. By comparison, it is found that the morphology of the multi-spot crater in the experiment is in agreement with the simulation results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The stochastic behavior of magnetic field lines in turbulence is explored analytically and numerically. This problem is a fundamental aspect of turbulence research but also highly relevant in the theory of energetic particles. In the current paper, previous approaches are reviewed and some simple heuristic arguments are provided helping the reader to understand the reason for the form of analytical results. The importance of the so-called Kubo number in field line random walk theory is also discussed. Furthermore, analytical results for a position-dependent field line diffusion coefficient are provided. For more realistic turbulence configurations, the field line diffusion coefficients are computed numerically. This includes quasi-slab, quasi-2D, two-component, and three-dimensional turbulence. Specific aspects of the field line random walk in each model are also discussed. Results based on a diffusion approximation are compared with numerical results obtained without employing this approximation with the aim to explore its validity and accuracy. Evanescent mode oscillators (EMO) are investigated as high-efficiency sources of millimeter-waves and low-frequency parts of terahertz radiation. EMO can be considered a high-efficiency version of the extended interaction oscillator (EIO) using the evanescent resonance mode (ERM) of a slow-wave structure. It has been shown quantitatively that the efficiency of the EMO is superior to that of the conventional EIO having the same periodic unit cell. The condition to have an evanescent resonant mode in a chain is derived in this article. EMO threshold excitation condition is expressed in terms of the beam and RF mode parameters. A Typical EMO is systematically modeled, and its performance is checked with a particle-in-cell simulation software package. In this paper, we report the key role that toroidal rotation and the related E × B shear physics played in the very high energy confinement quality ( H 98 y 2 > 1.5) of super H-mode experiments on DIII-D. Experiments show that the energy confinement quality decreases when toroidal rotation decreases due to the decreased externally controlled torque per particle. Meanwhile, the total pedestal pressure in the experiments remains very high during the rotation and confinement quality change. TGYRO transport modeling suggests the contribution from rotation in the E × B shear is responsible for the confinement quality in excess of standard H-mode ( H 98 y 2 ∼ 1). CGYRO gyrokinetic simulations reveal the governing physics in the core plasma of super H-modes: significant up-shift of nonlinear the ITG critical gradient is observed when applying E × B shear physics in the modeling based on experimental data. Radio-frequency capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs) are one of the key technologies enabling the latest etching processes in 3D NAND and FinFET manufacturing. These processes rely crucially on the precise control of the uniformity of ion/radical fluxes and ion angular and energy distribution function (IAEDF) in CCPs. The plasma behavior and scaling properties are dependent on the plasma chemistry in these processes, e.g., electro-positive Ar plasmas vs highly electro-negative O2 plasmas. With the large number of process and design parameters influencing the plasma properties, computational modeling has become an important tool in conjunction with experimental diagnostics in understanding the intricate physical mechanisms in CCPs. In this paper, a 2D particle-in-cell plasma model is used to study the kinetic behavior of low-pressure (<5 Pa) CCPs in two different representative chemistries: Ar and O2. The low-frequency RF source is at 1.356 MHz while 27.12 MHz is used for the high frequency. Simulations show a shift of the peak in the plasma density from the center of the chamber to the edge as the pressure increases from 0.3 to 2.6 Pa. The computed magnitude and spatial profile of electron density compare reasonably with experimental measurements over a range of pressure. Comparison between electro-positive and electro-negative plasmas are discussed. Modeling results for the dual frequency CCP highlight the effect of plasma uniformity on the IAEDF, especially near the outer edge of the electrodes. Collisions in the sheath increase the population of low-energy ions as the pressure is increased to 2.6 Pa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In recent years, interest in striation phenomena in radio frequency (rf) discharges has risen due to the availability of new experimental data and the implementation of new computational models. Depending on the conditions, different mechanisms of discharge striations are realized. These are the ionization instability, the instability due to the electron attachment to electronegative gases, or the instability due to thermoelectric transport. Although the first two mechanisms were modeled quite extensively in recent years, the understanding of the influence of the Dufour effect originating from plasma density gradients on the stability of radio frequency discharges in long tubes remains poor. In this paper, the influence of this mechanism on the longitudinal striations of radio frequency discharge is presented using a one-dimensional model of argon discharge driven with rf excitation under intermediate pressure conditions of 0.5 Torr. It is found that striation formation is sensitive to the value of the thermoelectric heat transport coefficient in the low electron temperature range. This paper addresses the challenge of extending the pulse duration of high-power microwave (HPM) sources, a critical focus in HPM technology. Transit-time oscillators (TTOs) typically modulate electron beams by forming standing waves through the cutoff of the TM01 mode in the modulation cavity. This study proposes enhancing the power capacity of TTOs by widening the drift channel. To enhance modulation capability without compromising power capacity, front and rear reflectors are strategically introduced. In particle-in-cell simulations, the device exhibits an output power of 1.65 GW at a frequency of 12.6 GHz, with an efficiency of 33.6%. The saturation time for the output microwave is 30 ns, and the maximum internal electric field strength is 860 kV/cm. The analysis of Z-pinch implosion dynamics plays one of the most important roles in the study of pulsed power discharges. At the same time, it is difficult to determine the density distribution together with the current density (current coupling to the imploding layer) to provide more detailed information about the dynamics. Numerical simulations can now provide high-resolution results that are almost unattainable in experiments. The challenge, however, is to obtain reliable results that are close enough to the experimental data to describe individual physical phenomena. In this paper, we show that it is possible to use a combination of experimental data and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations to verify and identify the physical processes during the stagnation of a Z-pinch. We focus on the analysis of the density profile from experimental data of the mega-ampere plasma focus PF-1000 and its reconstruction using an extended MHD code. Thanks to multi-frame interferometry, we recorded a total of 29 interferometric images of two shots, each in a 200 ns time window around the pinch phase. We were then able to obtain density profiles and observe the reflection of the shock wave from the axis. By the appropriate choice of initial conditions and boundary values in the simulation, we were able to obtain reasonable agreement with the experimental values. A theory of the three-wave coupling of triplets of tearing modes in toroidal pinches [i.e., either reversed field pinches (RFPs) or tokamaks] was proposed by R. Fitzpatrick [Phys. Plasmas 6, 1168 (1999)]. However, this theory only applies to toroidal pinches with negligible equilibrium plasma pressure gradients. Such a limitation is particularly inappropriate to RFPs. This paper generalizes the analysis of R. Fitzpatrick [Phys. Plasmas 6, 1168 (1999)] in order to take the equilibrium pressure gradient into account. However, for the sake of simplicity, a stepped pressure profile, rather than a continuous profile, is employed. In the limit in which the number of steps becomes very large, the results obtained from the generalized theory are presumably equivalent to those that would have been achieved using a continuous pressure profile. The generalized theory is used to investigate the formation of the characteristic toroidally localized pattern of phase-locked m = 1 and m = 0 tearing modes in RFP plasmas that is known as the "slinky" pattern. The incorporation of the equilibrium plasma pressure into the analysis is found to be of crucial importance when determining the properties of the pattern. This is the case because the plasma pressure controls the number of unstable m = 1 and m = 0 tearing modes, and also significantly affects the strength of three-wave coupling, as well as the phase relation between the phase-locked m = 1 and m = 0 modes. The experiments on medium-size stellarator Uragan-2M (U-2M) in Kharkiv, Ukraine, are carried on in support of the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) experimental program. The scenario ion cyclotron frequency range (ICRF) plasma production at the hydrogen minority regime had been experimentally tested on U-2M and was qualified at the Large Helical Device (LHD). The paper presents the results of further research on the ICRF plasma production. The ICRF discharge studies were carried out in a H2 + He mixture with a controlled hydrogen concentration ranging from few percents to 75%. The two-strap like antenna mimicks the W7-X antenna operated in monopole phasing. The applied RF power was in the range of ∼100 kW. Relatively dense plasma of up to Ne ∼ 1019 m−3 was produced near the first harmonic of the hydrogen cyclotron frequency. The maximum temperature of the electrons and ions was not more than a few tens of electron volt. The characteristic features of RF plasma production and the propagation of electromagnetic waves in the experimental conditions are discussed. The experiments on U-2M and LHD indicate that the minority scenario of ICRF plasma production appears to be scalable and could be used in large stellarator machines. This is, in particular, important for the future experiments ICRF production of target plasma in W-7X in conditions where electron cyclotron resonance heating start-up is not possible. Flows and rotation, particularly E × B rotation, are critical to improving plasma performance, and waves are a primary tool of plasma control. Thus, it is paramount to understand under what conditions waves can drive E × B flows in plasmas. In this didactic review, an invited paper accompanying the 2023 Marshall N. Rosenbluth Doctoral Thesis Award, this question is answered in the context of momentum-conserving quasilinear theory. There are two primary frameworks for momentum-conserving quasilinear theories that can handle both resonant and nonresonant particles: Eulerian averaging theories and oscillation-center Hamiltonian theories. There are also two different paradigmatic wave problems: plane-wave initial value problems, and steady-state boundary value problems. Here, it is shown that each of these frameworks "naturally" works better with a different problem type. By using these theories, one finds a great difference in the behavior of time- vs space-dependent waves. A time-evolving plane wave can only drive flow if the electromagnetic momentum of the wave, given by the Poynting flux, changes. This result precludes flow drive by any planar electrostatic wave. In contrast, a steady-state spatially evolving wave can drive flow whenever there is divergence in the flux of Minkowski momentum, a completely different physical quantity. This review aims to provide a high-level, intuitive understanding of the very different behaviors observed for these two types of problem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the previous studies of nonlinear saturation of the Buneman instability caused by high electron drift velocity relative to ions, the phase-space holes and the plateau on the electron velocity distribution function were identified as features of the saturation stage of instability [notably in the paper by Omura et al., J. Geophys. Res. 108, 1197 (2003)]. We have performed a much longer simulation of the Buneman instability and observed a secondary instability. This secondary instability generates fast electron-acoustic waves. By analyzing the phase-space plot of ions and electrons, we show that the fast electron heating and the formation of the plateau of electron velocity distribution function are not due to the quasi-linear diffusion but due to the nonlinear interaction of ion- and electron-acoustic solitary waves (phase-space holes) by exchange of trapped electrons in each wave. This paper presents an overview of experimental results of a laser-produced plasma expanding into a background gas, immersed within a large range of highly uniform magnetic fields (of up to 3 T), that are transverse to the expanding plasma. We used intensified gated imaging to capture the expansion of the plasma across and along the magnetic field lines to observe the spatiotemporal expansion dynamics for different magnetic field strengths. We observe changes in the perpendicular and parallel dynamics of the laser-produced plasmas expansion at high magnetic field. In addition, our results have also indicated the presence of electron-ion hybrid instabilities at relatively high pressures (100 mTorr) and relatively high magnetic field strengths (2 T), in accordance with theoretical calculations. The explosive emission processes that occur at electrode surface microprotrusions may have harmful effects in a variety of electrodynamic and acceleration systems exposed to high-power radio frequency electromagnetic waves. This paper presents the results of a radiative magnetohydrodynamic simulation of the explosion of copper conductors that occur under conditions inherent in the explosion of electrode microprotrusions, i.e., at current densities of the order of 109 A/cm2. Explosions occurring under quasi-stationary and radio frequency conditions (hereinafter referred to as quasi-stationary and radio frequency explosions, respectively) were considered. It was shown that in all the considered cases, the explosion occurred at high temperatures, so that the energy deposited in the conductor by the time of explosion exceeded the sublimation energy of the conductor material. It turned out, however, that the energy deposited in the conductor under radio frequency conditions, regardless of the frequency of current oscillations, was more than two times less than that deposited under quasi-stationary conditions. The explosion time was also virtually independent of the frequency, and it was approximately three times longer than that calculated for quasi-stationary conditions. For a radio frequency explosion, the specific current action integral was somewhat less (by about 25%) than that for a quasi-stationary explosion, and its value was actually independent of frequency. At the same time, in the radio frequency regime, the radiation power coming out of the conductor substance drops strongly, and it is almost two orders of magnitude smaller compared to the radiation power in the quasistationary regime. The use of non-sinusoidal waveforms in low pressure capacitively coupled plasmas intended for microelectronics fabrication has the goal of customizing ion and electron energy and angular distributions to the wafer. One such non-sinusoidal waveform uses the sum of consecutive harmonics of a fundamental sinusoidal frequency, f0, having a variable phase offset between the fundamental and even harmonics. In this paper, we discuss results from a computational investigation of the relation between ion energy and DC self-bias when varying the fundamental frequency f0 for capacitively coupled plasmas sustained in Ar/CF4/O2 and how those trends translate to a high aspect ratio etching of trenches in SiO2. The fundamental frequency, f0, was varied from 1 to 10 MHz and the relative phase from 0° to 180°. Two distinct regimes were identified. Average ion energy onto the wafer is strongly correlated with the DC self-bias at high f0, with there being a maximum at φ = 0° and minimum at φ = 180°. In the low frequency regime, this correlation is weak. Average ion energy onto the wafer is instead dominated by dynamic transients in the applied voltage waveforms, with a maximum at φ = 180° and minimum at φ = 0°. The trends in ion energy translate to etch properties. In both, the high and low frequency regimes, higher ion energies translate to higher etch rates and generally preferable final features, though behaving differently with phase angle. This paper presents spatially resolved laser Thomson scattering measurements in a cathode presheath and describes a new approximation for the electric field at the plasma-sheath boundary that accounts for collisional and ionization effects. The approximation is derived from a 1D sheath model using asymptotic theory, and the approximation is validated against the exact solution of the 1D model. The approximation of the electric field at the plasma-sheath boundary is examined with experimentally measured profiles of electron properties in the cathode presheath and negative glow of a glow discharge. The measurements are made with a noninvasive laser Thomson scattering system applied to a 20 kV pulsed plasma with an electrode gap of 26.53 mm at neutral pressures of 2, 2.5, and 25 Torr for argon, krypton, and helium, respectively. Peak electron densities for the He, Ar, and Kr plasmas are around 9 × 1018, 2.4 × 1019, and 7.5 × 1019 m−3, respectively. For all the gases, the electrons in the negative glow are approximately isothermal at electron temperatures between 1 and 2 eV, and for He and Ar, the electrons were not isothermal in the cathode presheath. The electron density profile in the cathode presheath was nonmonotonic, and calculations of the ionization rate indicate that a sharp increase in the ionization rate may produce a nonmonotonic density profile in the cathode presheath. The insights gained from spatially-resolved noninvasive measurements of electron properties in a cathode sheath reveal the need for more detailed cathode sheath models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kr L-shell spectroscopy modeling results are discussed in this paper, focusing on the n = 4 to n = 2 line transitions of Be- and Li-like Kr ions. Collisional radiative atomic kinetic and Stark-broadened spectral line shape calculations show electron temperature T e and density n e sensitivity in the spectrum. The combination of the T e dependence due to the relative intensity of Be-like to Li-like line emissions in the range from 1.5 to 3 keV and the n e sensitivity from the Stark broadening effect on the line shapes in the range from 5 × 10 23 to 2 × 10 24 / cc results in a spectrum that can be employed to diagnose T e and n e . Two different collisional radiative atomic kinetic models i.e., Prismspect [J. J. MacFarlane, et al., Int. Fusion Sci. Appl. Conf. Proc. 457 (2003)] and ABAKO [Florido, et al., PRE, 80, 056402 (2009)] produce similar results in level populations and spectra. In x-ray spectroscopy of implosion cores, this Kr L-shell spectrum may prove useful in an intermediate T e range in which Ar is too ionized for its K-shell to be of diagnostic value and Kr is not ionized enough for its K-shell emission to be useful. This paper presents an extended interaction klystron (EIK) operating at 0.22 THz based on a four-sheet-beam orthogonal interconnection structure (OIS). The proposed OIS comprises four vertically positioned trapezoidal line structures, significantly enhancing the coupling efficiency between cavities and achieving optimal interactions with the TM81 mode. This study investigates the dispersion characteristics and field distribution numerically, while the optimal working parameters and output structure were analyzed using the particle-in-cell (PIC) studio. The parameters of each cavity and the selection of five intermediate cavities were finalized by calculating the beam conductance, external quality factor, and stagger-tuning. The EIK generated a continuous 480 W output power with a four-sheet-beam at 17.5 kV and a current density of 200 A/cm2 from an input drive signal of 20 mW. The gain was approximately 43.8 dB.
